WORLD AIDS DAY
REMEMBERING THE STRUGGLES AND CELEBRATING AWARENESS n 1988, the effort to bring awareness to the global struggle against AIDS took a huge step forward. World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Bunn and Netter took their idea to Dr. Jonathan Mann, director of the Global Programme on AIDS (now known as UNAIDS). Dr. Mann liked the concept, approved it, and agreed with the recommendation that the first observance of World AIDS Day should be on December 1, 1988. In the almost three decades since its founding, World AIDS Day has been a time to reflect back on the struggle against the epidemic – the horrors and successes – and also a time to recommit to the prudence necessary to continue to prevent more losses. Today, HIV is considered more a chronic condition than a necessarily fatal one. One day, the relatively remarkable efforts that have produced treatments to help HIV-positive individuals live somewhat normal lives will be recognized as a landmark achievement; at least in comparison to the early period three decades ago when contracting the "gay cancer" was seen as a death sentence. Still, the numbers were staggering and they remain troublesome. As of 2013, AIDS has killed more than 36 million people worldwide (1981-2012), and an estimated 35.3 million people are living with HIV, making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history. Despite
recent improved access to antiretroviral treatment in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claims an estimated 2 million lives each year, of which about 270,000 are children. Scratch the surface of the statistics and there is much to worry about. According to the World Health Organization, only 54 percent of those with HIV know their status. HIV/AIDS is further increasingly correlated with economics and thus, access to effective healthcare. The vast majority of people living with HIV are in lowand middle-income countries. According to WHO, sub-Saharan Africa is the most affected region, with 25.6 million people living with HIV in 2015. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for twothirds of the global total of new HIV infections. Everywhere, though, HIV/AIDS has become more prevalent in younger people, people of color, the impoverished – it has taken root in urban communities, with South Florida being heavily impacted. A sad side effect of medical success in addressing HIV/AIDS is that experts say people are less cautious.
• Encouraging people to get tested for HIV. Let them know that some health clinics offer free HIV testing. • Talk to parents about teaching their kids the basics of safe sex. • Wear a red ribbon, the symbol of HIV awareness and support. Tell people why you are wearing it. World AIDS Day on December 1 also coincides with the holiday season of giving and is a good opportunity to support all of our South Florida organizations that offer testing and support services. Reflecting on progress against the HIV/AIDS epidemic is cause for optimism. But it is not reason to forget how much is yet to be done and the huge cost in terms of human lives that has been incurred around the world. Education, awareness, testing and early treatment remain the strongest defense against HIV/AIDS, which are recurring themes of World AIDS Day once again in its 28th year in just a few days. 22 WIREMAG.COM #47 2016
