PUBLISHER'S CORNER WHEN FOOLS SPEAK

$

Just when you thought Halloween was going to be the scariest thing this month, we learned that Georgia State Representative Betty Price, married to fired former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, suggested that people living with HIV should be quarantined as a measure to stop the spread of the virus which causes AIDS. This ignorant "lawmaker" asked the head of the Georgia Department of Public Health's HIV epidemiology section what officials are "legally able to do" to limit the spread of HIV throughout the state. It is both outrageous and disgusting that a state lawmaker will pull a page out of the dark ages just in time for Halloween. It also shows the same callousness displayed by her husband while flying in private jets abusing his position as HHS secretary and wasting valuable taxpayer dollars for personal benefit. These are the people in Trump's swamp that must be voted out of office as soon as possible.

In response to Price's despicable comments, Elton John, founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, issued the following statement: "Rep. Betty Price's comments about people living with HIV are horrific, discriminatory, and astonishingly ill-informed. As a doctor and elected official from a state where people are still contracting HIV at an alarming rate, Mrs. Price should know better than to demonize people and perpetuate myths that stigmatize people living with HIV. Her words smack of a dark time when there was little or no information about HIV and people were afraid of each other. Today, thanks to scientific advancements, growing acceptance and love, people living with HIV are living longer, healthier lives. We also know people living with HIV pose no public threat. Instead of perpetuating fear and bias, Mrs. Price should educate herself about HIV and use her position of power to provide support, resources and compassion to her constituents." Switching gears to this week's cover story, I interviewed photographer Claus Pelz – who I met recently via Facebook when he messaged me about his work photographing male models. We also spotlight a sampling of Claus' photographs to share his chiseled men artwork with our readers. According to Claus, "Through most of my photographs other people can see the models the way I see them." Enjoy his photography! Since the Miami Beach elections are right around the corner, I sat down with Michael Góngora, Miami Beach's first and only openly gay elected commissioner and vice mayor. Michael is running for his old Miami Beach commissioner seat in Group 3, so I asked him why he wants back in and what his priorities are if re-elected into office. Michael stated to me that "Our City needs experienced leaders to oversee the many projects underway and many voters told me they want me back." In Shopping Bag, we bring you a selection of beautiful watches by BLVGARI, Gucci, Maurice Lacroix and Versace that will help you stay on time in style. Finally, on Wednesday of last week I went to the annual Turnabout at TWIST with my DSLR camera in hand and had a great time taking photos of the bartenders dressed up and performing in drag. Check out my photo essay and try to guess "Who's that lady?" Happy Halloween!

WHAT IS GENVOYA®? GENVOYA is a 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in people 12 years and older who weigh at least 77 pounds. It can either be used in people who are starting HIV-1 treatment and have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements. These include having an undetectable viral load (less than 50 copies/mL) for 6 months or more on their current HIV-1 treatment. GENVOYA combines 4 medicines into 1 pill taken once a day with food. GENVOYA is a complete HIV-1 treatment and should not be used with other HIV-1 medicines. GENVOYA does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. To control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses, you must keep taking GENVOYA. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

What is the most important information I should know about GENVOYA?

GENVOYA may cause serious side effects: • Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. GENVOYA is not approved to treat HBV. Serious side effects of GENVOYA may also include: • Changes in your immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking GENVOYA.

• Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking GENVOYA. • Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. • Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. "YOU DON'T JUST TAKE A PHOTO OF A PERSON, YOU REALLY TAKE A SNAP OF A PERSON AT ONE POINT IN TIME." - CLAUS PELZ

Photographer Spotlight: THROUGH THE LENS OF CLAUS PELZ By Rafa Carvajal Photos by Claus Pelz. clauspelz.com

14 WIREMAG.COM #41 2017

recently met photographer Claus Pelz via Facebook when he messaged me about his work photographing male models. After becoming Facebook friends, I decided to interview Claus and spotlight a sampling of his photographs to share his artwork with Wire Magazine's readers in this week's cover story. Rafa Carvajal: What drew you to photography and how did you become a professional photographer? Claus Pelz: It started with a film-SLR camera when I was a teenager and I experimented mostly with cars and people. Ten years ago, I worked in the IT department of a photography equipment retailer and my coworkers inspired me to get back into it. Over time, I invested so much time and money that it became more than just a hobby. RC: What do you enjoy the most about your job as a photographer? CP: For me, photo shoots have a thrill because there is so much going on at the time. You're getting to know the model, you play with camera settings, outfits and backgrounds on the go and you always feel the clock ticking. I miss it when I don't have it. RC: Where do you get your inspiration for your photography? CP: I have a lot of ideas in my head that I think come from images or ads that I have seen when I was a kid. Some of these memories are so vague that the photos I take based on these memories are probably totally different from what it was. And that's a good thing, so I'm actually not copying anyone's work. And sometimes I just see something and I think if I had the right model to put in there, that would be an awesome photo!

"FOR ME, PHOTO SHOOTS HAVE A THRILL BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON AT THE TIME." - CLAUS PELZ

RC: What do you enjoy most about your work photographing male models? CP: Through most of my photographs other people can see the models the way I see them. RC: What do you look for in a model? CP: I like male models that are very manly looking, which means muscular and/ or hairy, and I like tan skin tones. RC: How do you find your male models? CP: These days it's mostly through social media. Sometimes I find them and sometimes they find me. Modeling agencies are a good source too. CR2 Talent in Miami is one of very few that has male models in real muscular shape. RC: What have you learned through photographing people? CP: I've had repeat shoots with models over the span of many years and it's interesting to see how people mature. You don't just take a photo of a person, you really take a snap of a person at one point in time. RC: Describe your photography style for our readers. CP: I like when photos have a wow effect, but still look like they have been taken with a film camera without Photoshop and Instagram filters, so that you would recognize the model on the street. RC: Describe your work in 3 words. CP: Clean, honest, wow. RC: What do you want people to feel after looking at your photographs? CP: I usually stay away from dark themes because I don't want anyone to be turned off, so let's say impressed in a good way!

#41 2017 WIREMAG.COM 17

"THROUGH MOST OF MY PHOTOGRAPHS OTHER PEOPLE CAN SEE THE MODELS THE WAY I SEE THEM." - CLAUS PELZ

RC: What has been your favorite photo shoot and why? CP: Caleb Blanchard from CR2 Talent and I work really well together. Last year's shoot in Miami and this year's shoot in Las Vegas were equally epic. Caleb has no issues getting up early or doing anything else that needs to be done to get the shot. RC: What is your current struggle? CP: I really have two struggles. One is that I don't have the time to finish as many photos as I'd like. The second struggle is dealing with unreliable people, it's just a waste of time. RC: Where can our readers learn more about you and follow your work? CP: instagram.com/clauspelz, clauspelz.com, facebook. com/clauspelzphotography, and youtube.com/user/clausphotos. RC: What else would you like to share with Wire Magazine readers? CP: My 2018 Muscle Men Calendar has just been released and is available on amazon.com. You can use the short link wiremag.co/mm2018wc to purchase it on Amazon. Retailers interested in buying a smaller amount can contact me directly. I appreciate everyone reading this to take the time!

MEET THE CANDIDATE:

MICHAEL GÓNGORA

FOR MIAMI BEACH COMMISSIONER

have known Michael Góngora for several years, and so have many other members of our community. Michael was Miami Beach's first and only openly gay elected commissioner and vice mayor, and also ran for City mayor against Philip Levine in 2013. Michael is running for his old Miami Beach commissioner seat in Group 3. Michael started in public service when he was appointed to serve on various community, arts, and City committees in 2000 after being elected president of the Miami Beach Latin Chamber of Commerce. He was elected to a partial commissioner term in 2006 and re-elected to a full term in 2009. As commissioner, Michael was Chairman of the City's Land Use and Development Committee, a member of the Finance Committee, and represented Miami Beach at the Miami-Dade County League of Cities. Michael also served as chairman of several boards and committees, including Environmental Coalition of Miami and the Beaches (ECOMB) and the Miami Beach Bar Association. While president of the Miami Beach Bar Association, he re-established the North Beach Pro Bono Law Clinic, providing free legal consultations to low-income residents. Michael also served as special magistrate for the Value Adjustment Board determining property tax appeals in Miami-Dade County. In 2010, Michael became the first Miami Beach commissioner to be a member of the board of directors for Council Towers, which provides affordable housing for elderly residents. Michael is also an advocate of environmental issues and led to the creation of the City's Sustainability Committee.

I sat down with Michael Góngora, so Wire Magazine readers can learn about his qualifications to be a commissioner and his plans if elected into office.

"I REALLY, REALLY WANT A MASS TRANSIT CONNECTION BETWEEN MIAMI AND MIAMI BEACH." - MICHAEL GÓNGORA

Michael graduated from the University of Miami's Law School in 1994, and practices community association law, representing many condominium and homeowner associations in South Florida.

Rafa Carvajal: Why are you running for Miami Beach commissioner? Michael Góngora: I'm running because I love our City and the diversity of our residents. Our City needs experienced leaders to oversee the many projects underway and many voters told me they want me back. RC: Why should voters elect you as commissioner in Group 3 instead of someone else? MG: I'm the best choice. I've served as a commissioner before and know how our City works. Essentially, the voters are selecting someone to run a $320 million a year company which is what the operating budget of Miami Beach is. Because I served as a commissioner before, I have the experience.

RC: What do you think are the 3 most important issues facing Miami Beach that need to be addressed by the commissioners after the election? MG: Traffic is out of control. The constant road construction projects and resulting traffic congestion negatively impact our quality of life. I will work to better oversee these projects while looking to implement world-class mass transit like a Baylink or Metro Mover, so we can connect to the mainland without a car. Second, I'm concerned about public safety. The property crime rate is too high in Mid Beach and North Beach residential areas while certain areas of South Beach have become dangerous. I am advocating for more community policing and police visibility. Lastly, we need to carefully move forward with flood mitigation projects to keep our City drier while also maintaining our historic neighborhoods. RC: Beside these 3 issues, what are your top 3 priorities you plan to tackle if elected commissioner and why? MG: Some personal priorities would include better programming from our City focusing on arts and culture. We need to have better branding as an arts and cultural destination. I've always advocated for senior housing and other programs for our older residents. The LGBTQ working community will need to prepare for our senior years and, for those who make less money, these types of facilities will be needed. Last, I really, really want a mass transit connection between Miami and Miami Beach.

RC: How should Miami Beach address the problem of increasing crime in the City? Should there be more police officers walking the beat to deter crime, similar to policing in other major tourist destinations around the world? MG: Yes, we need more community policing, and we need to fill the open positions. We also need to ensure that our officers have good morale and respectful relationship with administration to work their best. Our police officers should be motivated to come to work and give their best and we can achieve that.

"OUR CITY NEEDS EXPERIENCED LEADERS TO OVERSEE THE MANY PROJECTS UNDERWAY AND MANY VOTERS TOLD ME THEY WANT ME BACK." - MICHAEL GÓNGORA

RC: How do you plan to improve the quality of life of Miami Beach residents? MG: Quality of life is improved every day through countless smaller items that go under the radar. Ensuring trash and recycling pickups happen timely and on schedule; ensuring that traffic is flowing and traffic lights are synchronized; and by focusing on and protecting residential quality of life over big box development. I'm running because I believe our quality of life has diminished and we must focus on the residents. RC: How do you plan to help businesses in Miami Beach grow and expand? MG: Lincoln Road needs better programming to help restore it to the exciting promenade it used to be. Ocean Drive needs lots of attention and diverse programming to attract different types of people. We have an opportunity now to pass a North Beach Master Plan that will bring life and development to our northern corridor. The City needs to do its part to provide events that help our businesses and also that residents want to go to. RC: Do you support further construction of new large high rises in Miami Beach? Please explain why do you support or oppose such development. MG: I am not in favor of large high rises in South Beach and Middle Beach. We really have enough. If we bring new development, then it would have to be in the North Beach corridor that longs for some new projects and is needed up there to create a North Beach town center.

RC: Why do you think the World OutGames Miami failed, even though they raised such a large sum of money? MG: The World OutGames were poorly managed and were in over their heads. It was a wonderful concept and event to attract to Miami Beach, but those in charge were not qualified to see it through and kept much of the information hidden from everyone, including the volunteer advisory board of directors.

22 WIREMAG.COM #41 2017

RC: In your opinion, was Ivan Cano, CEO of OutGames Miami, and his management team held sufficiently accountable for the Games debacle? If no, how else do you think they should have been held accountable? MG: I feel terrible for all the athletes that travelled here and were left without hotel rooms and sporting events they were promised. I am proud of how our community came together to ensure that the Games moved forward. Ivan disappeared and last I heard was in New Jersey. I believe he was negligent and reckless in keeping the debacle a secret from everyone until the end. The National Hotel was left holding the bag for unused hotel rooms. I do not believe he has really been held accountable, but the Miami Beach Police Department determined there was no criminal culpability, so short of a civil lawsuit, I'm not sure what more could be done. RC: What measures do you think the City of Miami Beach needs to put in place to prevent the loss of taxpayers' money provided to failed events such as OutGames Miami? MG: The City of Miami Beach and the Visitor and Convention Authority were also culpable in giving large sums of money with little to no oversight. Miami Beach must be more careful in giving large financial sponsorships to any event. Although everyone would like to blame Ivan, the truth is that the money should not have been given so freely either. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? MG: I appreciate your longtime friendship and support throughout the years. I'm proud to be Miami Beach's first and, to date, only openly gay elected official. I take the responsibility very seriously and work very hard to provide good, honest, ethical leadership and to make our community and all the residents proud. I hope you honor me with your vote and support one more time!

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY MICHAEL GÓNGORA

RC: What are your plans to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community in Miami Beach? MG: I have already done the heavy lifting when I was commissioner before. In 2013, before I left office I sponsored and championed a Charter amendment so that all members of the LGBTQ community are protected against all types of discrimination including in employment and in housing. I will continue to protect our community and ensure that we feel safe and welcome here. I believe this is why all of the LGBTQ groups including SAVE, Equality Florida and Victory Fund have endorsed my candidacy. I also worked with our former mayor Matti Bower to ensure that Miami Beach had a successful Gay Pride which is now going into its 10th year.
