PUBLISHER'S CORNER ELECTIONS MATTER Think for a second how the lives of millions of Americans have been impacted by the actions and executive orders of Donald Trump. From healthcare to the environment, to LGBTQ rights and federal assistance in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane in Puerto Rico, and much more, the election of Trump as president has had very real consequences for our fellow citizens and our community. We the people are the ones who elect the men and women who run for office at all levels of government. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to participate in the democratic process by exercising your right to vote. Do so in the upcoming Miami Beach elections, and make sure you have your say on who the next mayor and commissioners will be. Your vote and those of your fellow residents will determine who is elected into office and how their actions in government will affect your quality of life. This week I sat down with Mark Samuelian, candidate for Miami Beach commissioner in Group 2, so our readers and the voters can learn more about his background, qualifications and plans if he gets elected as commissioner. I asked him very specific questions about several quality of life issues affecting the residents and business owners of Miami Beach to understand how he plans to address them if elected to the public office he seeks. In this week's cover story, Wire Magazine and yours truly bring you four of the hottest 2018 car models by Chevrolet Corvette, Kia Motors Corporation, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche AG. These sexy vehicles include sports cars, sedans and convertibles loaded with the latest technologies. Check it out to learn more about the Corvette Carbon 65 Edition, Kia Stinger GT, Mercedes-Benz E400 4MATIC Coupe and Porsche 911 GT3. In Health & Wellness, Michael Bertonatti, a wellness & health specialist, explains how to avoid age-accelerating foods to slow down your aging. If you eat the wrong foods regularly you may look and feel several years older than your real age, but if you eat the right foods over time you can start to look younger than your age. In Top Trax, DJ FR8-O looks at the new Latin revolution and how Latin music trends keep coming back over and over again – even not so "Despacito" sometimes. Finally, in Out & About I have a chat with Joshua Alperstein, The Anderson Bar's Mix Master, to learn more about the Bar, their cocktails and food, and the Anderson's upcoming Halloween party. The Anderson is located inside Miami's oldest bar – formally Magnum Lounge – and has become a favorite locals neighborhood bar in Miami's thriving MiMo District. Created with an 80's vision in mind, featuring live music and an avant-garde bar program that delivers a unique take on cocktails, The Anderson is a watering hole destination that welcomes everybody. sn't it amazing how some fashion trends seem to keep coming back over and over again? The 80s

were inspired by the 50s, the 90s took its cues from the 60s and 70s, and the 2000s took it right back to the 80s again. The same can be said for Latin mu-

sic trends. Let's take the late 80s for example. As the

novelty of New Wave and Synth-Pop started to fade,

a new genre was slowly rising up from the dark underground clubs of New York, L.A. and Miami called Freestyle. Unlike its predecessor, which drew most of its talent from the UK, this new movement was fueled by Latin-American artists like Lisa Lisa, Tony Moran, Brenda K Starr and The Covergirls. While only a handful of these acts managed to claw their way to the mainstream spotlight, their collective efforts inspired an entire generation of young artists that would later change the future of pop music forever. In 1999, a young Latin singer by the name of Ricky Martin (you may have heard of him) took to the Grammy stage for the first time. Practically invisible to the American music scene at the time, his epic per-

formance of "The Cup of Life" brought the auditorium (and the entire world) to its feet that night. Suddenly, pop music's next Latin invasion had begun. Other Latin artists like Marc Anthony and Enrique Iglesias crossed over to the American charts while American artist scrambled to bring Latin influences into their re-

cords and shows. Sadly, like every trend before it, the rhythmic sounds of bongos, horns and Spanish guitars began to lose their luster and fade from the audio landscape. For a while, Synth ruled the airwaves again. Only this time they called it EDM. And now that glowstick-wielding, Redbull-infused era of music is nothing more than a tiny blip in the industry's rearview mirror, artists and labels are once again looking to Latin America for some fresh inspiration. Ever since Justin Bieber teamed up with Luis Fonsi for the record-breaking reboot of "Despacito" earlier this year, other artists haven't been too despacito to jump on the boat as well – this time by way of the Caribbean. Beyoncé, Rihanna and Camila Cabello are just a few of our favorite divas who have recently brought the sounds of Puerto Rico, Cuba and The Dominican Republic back to the charts. Even UK artists like Dua Lipa and Little Mix are getting in on the action, and 2017 isn't over yet. Hopefully, this new revolution will prove to be more than just this generation's leg-warmers, and the world will finally see that Latin music is as essential to your musical wardrobe as a great pair of jeans. You know, those tight ones that show off your butt perfectly.

FOR MIAMI BEACH COMMISSIONER

s we have learned from the actions of the current occupant of the White House, elections matter and the results can have a direct impact on our lives. The same applies to the candidates in the upcoming Miami Beach general election to be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. Mark Samuelian is running for Miami Beach commissioner in Group 2, so I sat down with him to learn more about his background, qualifications and plans if he gets elected into office. Mark Samuelian is a former partner at the international technology and business consulting firm Accenture who has three decades of engineering and business management expertise, and has had many community volunteer leadership roles. Samuelian is the past president and a current board director of Miami Beach United (an established city-wide resident advocacy organization), serves on the Board of the Belle Isle Residents' Association and the Pets' Trust Advisory Board, and has attended and lectured for the Good Government Initiative. Samuelian graduated from the Miami Beach Leadership Academy and is a pillar member of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce. He attended public schools, was the first person in his family to earn a college degree, is a former national chess champion and actively supports Miami Beach scholastic chess as a coach and mentor. Mark Samuelian also holds an engineering degree, cum laude, from Georgia Tech and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Meet the Candidate:

"OUR CITY GOVERNMENT MUST LEARN TO DO MORE WITH LESS AND WE MUST LIMIT THE INFLUENCE OF SPECIAL INTERESTS. WE WILL BRING AN INDEPENDENT INSPECTOR GENERAL TO ADDRESS ISSUES OF WASTE, FRAUD AND ABUSE." - MARK SAMUELIAN

Rafa Carvajal: Why are you running for Miami Beach commissioner? Mark Samuelian: Miami Beach faces serious and urgent challenges. I am running for office to help the City we all love meet these challenges. My professional experiences and expertise, as well as my leadership skills, are perfectly suited to address the issues that our residents are concerned about. The residents of this City expect and deserve results. I know I can deliver the best solutions to our most critical problems, and that is what I am going to do.

ternational giants like Pepsi or Johnson & Johnson had major problems, they hired my company and me to implement creative solutions. Here in Miami Beach, I have spent years successfully advocating for residents' rights and placing the community's well being ahead of special interests. I am a consensus builder who likes to work in a collegial atmosphere that promotes inclusion, respect for others and professionalism at all times. My background, skill set and insistence in promoting the highest level of ethical behavior makes me the best choice for voters in November.

RC: Why should voters elect you as commissioner in Group 2 instead of your opponent? MS: While some of the most urgent and serious issues our City faces have to do with flood risk, the City Commission currently holds no engineers. My Georgia Tech industrial engineering degree will prove to be an invaluable tool in dealing with some of our most pressing issues. Whether it's a more climate change resilient city, or better preparing the City to withstand the devastating effects of a hurricane like Irma, or confronting out of control development that could weaken our City's character, or developing meaningful traffic solutions, I am committed to the principle of making "Miami Beach Strong."

RC: What do you think are the 3 most important issues facing Miami Beach that need to be addressed by the commissioners after the election? MS: 1) Traffic/parking: we need to rein in overdevelopment and find creative ways to keep people moving. Expanding the trolley across all of Miami Beach is a good first step. 2) Flooding/rising sea levels: we need to protect our community with dynamic strategies that keep us dry and are environmentally friendly. As an engineer, I can contribute much to this important challenge. 3) Raising the bar at City Hall: our City government must learn to do more with less and we must limit the influence of special interests. We will bring an independent inspector general to address issues of waste, fraud and abuse.

RC: What are your qualifications and experience to be an effective Miami Beach commissioner? MS: My candidacy is based on the core principles of a "Residents-First" philosophy, impeccable ethics, smart problem-solving abilities and respectful leadership. To those guiding principles I bring specialized engineering and business expertise and a proven track record of achievement. In addition to graduating cum laude with a degree in engineering from Georgia Tech, I earned an MBA from Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania. From there I became a partner at the renowned business-consulting firm Accenture. When leading in-

RC: Beside these 3 issues, what are your top 3 priorities you plan to tackle if elected commissioner and why? MS: Public Safety is an increasing concern and I will work to ensure we have the proper police resources and utilization. Also, I am proud to have led a volunteer effort to pass the Residents' Right to Know – a groundbreaking initiative to better engage residents with the City. I will continue to lead on efforts to ensure residents are fully represented at City Hall. Finally, I plan to apply my business expertise to ensure that our City maintains a strong financial position – ideally by serving on the Commission Finance Committee

#40 2017 WIREMAG.COM 11

RC: How should Miami Beach address the problem of increasing crime in the City? Should there be more police officers walking the beat to deter crime, similar to policing in other major tourist destinations around the world? MS: Yes, we should do everything possible to make sure our police are as visible as possible. I am also a strong advocate for technology including license plate readers, street cameras, enhanced lighting, body cameras and more.

"MIAMI BEACH FACES SERIOUS AND URGENT CHALLENGES. I AM RUNNING FOR OFFICE TO HELP THE CITY WE ALL LOVE MEET THESE CHALLENGES." - MARK SAMUELIAN

RC: How do you plan to improve the quality of life of Miami Beach residents? MS: We need to put "residents first" and deliver on issues including education, green space, safety and preserving our historic homes and neighborhoods.

RC: Do you support further construction of new large high rises in Miami Beach? Please explain why do you support or oppose such development. MS: I support smart development which will add to the qualify of life of our community. I fought hard and successfully against a disastrous development on Watson Island, which would have crippled traffic on the MacArthur Causeway. At the same time, I fully embrace the current plan for development on Ocean Terrace in North Beach, which will help revitalize that neighborhood. RC: Tell our readers about your views regarding LGBTQ rights. MS: I couldn't be a stronger "pro equality" candidate and fully support LGBTQ rights. My commitment has been recognized by endorsements from SAVE, Equality Florida and Hôtel Gaythering – the only gay hotel in Miami Beach. RC: What are your plans to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community in Miami Beach? MS: I recognize that the LGBTQ community faces some specialized topics include needle exchange, PrEP, safe spaces, etc. I will further educate myself and work closely with leading LGBTQ organizations/individuals to ensure the needs of the community are met.

RC: Where do you stand today regarding your political party affiliation and your political views? MS: I am registered NPA and, given our nonpartisan races, I believe this allows candidates to focus on issues that go to the heart of our City. I made a personal choice to change parties because the party no longer shared my views and values on key issues like respect for LGBTQ rights and women's rights. I do believe in and aggressively support progressive issues like addressing climate change and fully embracing equality. I also believe we need to address the growing traffic gridlock and public safety concerns that consume Miami Beach, which is why I am running for the RC: In the past you supported Republican candidates. City Commission. I offer the best opportunity to bring people together from all sides with a focus on getting things accomplished. Why did you support them? MS: In the past, I have supported a diverse group of candidates, including Democrats. I have never been RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? a party voter, rather a candidate specific voter. I am MS: Ten current and former members of the Miami Beach Commission have made endorsements proud to have voted for/financially supported qual- and all ten have endorsed me: Mayor Philip Levine, Ricky Arriola, Joy Malakoff, Matti Bower, Jorge ified candidates irrespective of party including David Exposito, Saul Gross, Nancy Liebman, Jose Smith, Ed Tobin, and Deede Weithorn. I have also Richardson, Mayor Philip Levine and Congresswoman received the endorsement of County Commissioner Xavier Suarez and former Commissioner Katy Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. As you can see, these are all can- Sorenson. Finally, my unwavering pro equality commitment has been recognized by endorsements didates with different backgrounds, but all believe in from SAVE, Equality Florida and Hôtel Gaythering. fighting the good fight for our community.

RC: How do you plan to help businesses in Miami Beach grow and expand? MS: The City needs to do a better job at delivering its core services including safety and cleanliness. We must strive to make it easier to do business in Miami Beach by lessening "red tape" such as in the permitting process. Finally, we must continue to enhance our support for hospitality/tourism and provide more incentives to the film industry to remain competitive in this important sector.

HEALTH & WELLNESS By Michael Bertonatti

WANT TO SLOW DOWN YOUR AGING? AVOID THE FOLLOWING AGE-ACCELERATING FOODS o you eat these harmful foods that age you faster? Some are even deceptively marketed to you as healthy by giant food corporations. Due to biochemical reactions in your body that occur with every type of food you eat on a daily basis, some foods age you faster than your real age, while other foods help to fight aging. Eat the wrong foods regularly and you can look and feel 10 or more years older than your real age, but if you eat the right foods over time you can start to look 5-10 years younger than your real age. Three of the processes that go on inside your body that have a major impact on your rate of aging are called glycation, inflammation and oxidation. When we talk about aging, we're not just talking about wrinkles on your skin or how thick your hair is, we're talking about factors that you can't see, such as how well your organs function and whether your joints are degrading.

Before we tell you why wheat can actually speed up the aging process in your body, let's clarify some simple biochemistry in your body like glycation and substances called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). These nasty little compounds called AGEs speed up the aging process in your body including damage over time to your organs, your joints and, of course, wrinkled skin. So with that said, what is one of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your body? This may surprise you, but high blood sugar levels over time dramatically increase age-accelerating AGEs in your body. This is why type 2 diabetics many times appear that they have not aged well and look older than their real age. But this age-increasing effect is not just limited to diabetics. It can affect everyone. So, let's get back to how whole wheat relates to this. Here is a little-known fact that's often covered up by the massive marketing campaigns of giant food companies that 20 WIREMAG.COM #40 2017

want you to believe that whole wheat is healthy for you. The fact is that wheat contains a unique type of carbohydrate (not found in other foods) called Amylopectin-A – which has been found in tests to spike your blood sugar higher than even pure table sugar. In fact, amylopectin-A (from wheat) raises your blood sugar more than almost any other carbohydrate source on earth based on blood sugar response testing. This means that wheat-based foods such as breads, bagels, cereals, muffins and other baked goods often cause much higher blood sugar levels than most other carbohydrate sources. As you know now, the higher your average blood sugar levels are over time, the more AGEs are formed inside your body, which makes you age faster. There is another problem with wheat-based foods and aging. As it turns out, baked wheat products contain carcinogenic chemicals called acrylamides that form in the browned portion of bread, cereals, muffins, etc. These carcinogenic acrylamides have been linked in studies to increase risk of cancer and accelerated FOOD #3 THAT AGES YOU FASTER: SUGAR, SUGARY FOODS, CERTAIN aging. You've heard how as french fries, BBQ meats, and any other browned bad it is for you 1,000 times before for many other starchy foods. reasons, including your waistline and developing type 2 diabetes. FOOD #4 THAT AGES YOU FASTER: SOYBEAN OIL, CANOLA OIL OR OTHER VEGETABLE OILS I know these have been marketed to you over the years by giant food companies as healthy, but if you understand a little biochemistry about how these highly-processed oils react inside your body, you would quickly see how false that is. First, anything labeled soybean oil, canola oil, corn oil, vegetable oil or cottonseed oil (these are in a lot of processed foods you probably eat) most times has undergone a refining process under extremely high heat and use of chemical solvents such as hexane. This leaves you with an oil where the polyunsaturated fats have undergone a lot of oxidation, and are therefore very inflammatory inside your body, producing free radicals, damaging your cell membranes, contributing to faster aging, heart disease and other possible health problems. If you want to avoid the health-damaging effects of soybean, canola, corn and other vegetable oils, make sure to steer clear of them as much as you can, and instead opt for truly healthy oils and fats such as extra-virgin coconut oil (a healthy source of MCT fats), avocado oil and grass-fed butter (a great source of healthy CLA fats). OUT & ABOUT

THE ANDERSON BAR

&

he Anderson Bar is hosting a special Halloween party with some of South Florida's most talented drag performers on October 31st starting at 7 p.m. The Anderson, located inside Miami's oldest bar – formally Magnum Lounge – is a favorite locals neighborhood bar in Miami's thriving MiMo District created with an 80's vision in mind. The Anderson's motto is "We don't see anything wrong with a little good cocktails, good food and live music." Its avant-garde bar program delivers a unique take on cocktails divided into New Wave Cocktails with characteristics made famous by Elad Zvi and Gabe Orta's Bar Lab, and Original Cocktails that pay tribute to the forgotten classics. Patrons can also enjoy a creative menu of globally-inspired munchies bar food. The outside bar at The Anderson offers a very different experience with a colorful, tropical themed outdoor watering hole named The Shack, serving a variety of Caribbean-inspired drinks, rotating boozy slushies and lots of rum. I sat down with Joshua Alperstein, The Anderson's Mix Master, to learn more about the Bar and their upcoming Halloween party.

HALLOWEEN Rafa Carvajal: How would you describe The Anderson vibe? Joshua Alperstein: 80's influenced cocktail lounge, featuring live music, intimate lighting and decor. Let's not forget about The Shack – the best kept secret in Miami with its island tiki bar style, which is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoor venue. RC: What makes The Anderson special? JA: It's diversity. Throughout a single night The Anderson transitions from a local dive bar, to a craft cocktail bar, to a live music venue, and, of course, a party atmosphere. We welcome everybody and are what makes Miami the Magic City. You'll see a show sitting next to the cool crossroads that make Miami the sexy city by the water it is. RC: When is the best time to come into The Anderson? JA: It really depends on what experience you're looking for, Happy for Hours (our happy hour) allows for a chill laid back environment with great pricing. I think Thursday night band nights really show what The Anderson is meant to be. We have from big name groups to local artists, and it always leads to a great show.

RC: Where did you get your start in the industry? JA: After banging on around the event and catering scene, I landed at the newly opened Broken Shaker. From there I found a home in this city and industry, and then opened 27 Restaurant & Bar. RC: What's your favorite cocktail to make at The Anderson? JA: I've always said the same thing, my favorite drink is the one you want to have. RC: What are the demographics at The Anderson? JA: We have the full gambit including the old school Magnum crowd, locals, travelers, industry folks, and all ages (over 21 of course). You can find the suit and tie types hiding from rush hour traffic, Wynwood hipster kids, cool spot regulars, Miami locals, and South Beachers who Uber north. We aren't afraid to host anyone… travel to us. There's someone here for everyone. RC: What can we expect to see on Halloween at The Anderson? JA: You can expect to see a collection of Miami and, quite honestly, South Florida's best drag talent, DJs and a wild night of unexpected surprises. Plan on staying late and partying long.
