This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be at two different events watching and listening to the incomparable Gloria Estefan. On Friday, I went to the opening night of the Broadway Musical On Your Feet! based on the life story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts; and on Saturday, I celebrated freedom, beauty, truth and love at the National LGBTQ Task Force Gala – Miami, where Gloria received the Task Force’s National Leadership Award. I am always inspired by the success stories of fellow immigrants who came to this country, worked very hard, and were able to achieve their dreams. On Your Feet! was an outstanding show. I definitely recommend seeing it! These stories are personally inspiring because they remind me of myself and so many other young people who emigrated to the land of the free in search of a better life. I am that young man who came to this country alone to attend the United States Coast Guard Academy. The United States has given me opportunities that I never even dreamed were possible. Besides graduating with high honors from the Coast Guard Academy, I also earned my MBA from Harvard Business School and have had a successful career in business. Today, thanks to this great country of ours, I own and publish Wire Magazine and I am the Chief Operating Officer of Q Link Wireless, a multimillion dollar provider of wireless phone service to customers across the United States eligible for the Federal Lifeline Program. My story, like that of so many other immigrants, is one of hard work, dedication and success achieving the American dream – for which I am truly grateful!

OLIVER By DJ FR8-O
or centuries, we mere mortals have been obsessed with the concept of time travel. What would we change if we could go back? When will we get our flying cars? What will Cher look like 100 years from now? We may never see the day when this sci-fi fantasy actually becomes reality, but at least we've got Oliver Goldstein and Vaughn Oliver – aka Oliver – to give us an idea of what it would sound like if the future and the past actually collided. Full Circle, the duo's latest contribution to our current timeline, melds together post-modern electronica with the occasional nod to old school elements and delivers a capsule of work that's nothing short of timeless.
COMES FULL CIRCLE
ly, making it a much easier pill to swallow. Meanwhile, "Wherever We Are" brings a dream-like element to the set thanks to Elohim's soothing purr and an unexpected saxophone solo at the end. Although Oliver's latest is unfortunately a far cry from what you'll hear on Billboard's Hot 100, the album is both eclectic and cohesive from start to finish; more so than most of the recent major label offerings. Are you surprised? In an era when the mainstream worships over-produced gimmicks and glammed up young faces over actual musical talent, it's easy for true artists like Oliver to slip by unnoticed and remain stranded in obscurity; but if history has taught us anything it's that great talent has a way of clawing its way to the surface eventually. Commercial pop may rule the airwaves and the awards shows today, but Oliver has just proven that the future – and the past – belong to the independent artists.
These guys aren't pulling off this delicate balancing act all on their own though. For this venture, they've recruited some of the hottest vocalists in the indie dance scene. MNDR, Leon Else, Sam Sparro, Chromeo, even the legendary De La Soul are just a few of the time travelers that make Full Circle's aural tapestry come to life flawlessly. A few tracks that have already made their way into my daily rotation are the sultry "Chemistry," '80s R&B-tinged "Love Like This," and the disco-driven "Last Forever." The first single "Electrify" may give you a little Nine Inch Nails déjà vu at first, but vocalist Scott Mills smooths out the edges perfect-

Formed in 2010 and fused by a mutual love of vinyl and synth, Oliver proved themselves to be sonically relevant and relentless, with their first three EPs, Dirty Talk (2012), Mechanical (2014), and Light Years Away (2014) drawing thunderous praise from their fans and their peers. With influences sprawling across the musical spectrum, the Ollies have never been afraid to tap into the heart of hip-hop, disco, funk and even French house when weaving their melodies together. And it's not unusual to catch a glimpse of Giorgio Moroder on one track, then Daft Punk on the next. Goldstein, the pair's instrumentalist, explains that "We just care so much about what we're doing that we really want the product to be something we can be proud of for a long time and that will stand the test of time." Full Circle is no different.
OUT & ABOUT By Rafa Carvajal
t's that time of the year once again! Time for the guys at TWIST to turn-it-about and make you guess "who's that lady?" TWIST will celebrate its annual Turnabout on Wednesday, October 18 with special shows by the TWIST staff, performances by TP Lords and Josefina La Globos, and music by DJ Sushiman. I sat down with TWIST bartenders Mario Trejo and Sean Kiray to preview this year's Turnabout. Rafa Carvajal: What is Turnabout at TWIST? Mario Trejo: Turnabout at TWIST is when the bartenders dress in drag, work in drag and each bartender performs a number for the friends and patrons. Sean Kiray: Turnabout is a night that all of the TWIST bartenders and some of the staff and customers dress up in drag. RC: Describe Turnabout in 3 words. MT: Fun, crazy and OMG. SK: Fun, fierce and fabulous. RC: How did the Turnabout tradition get started? MT: I've been told that Turnabout began the first year TWIST opened, almost 25 years ago. It has become a tradition that we all look forward to every year. I have a few surprises lined up this year. Can't wait! SK: Turnabout is a long-standing tradition in gay bars. It is a night to celebrate our queens who are dedicated to their craft and our community. It is also a celebration of gender equality and freedom. RC: Why do the TWIST family and patrons enjoy Turnabout so much? MT: First, I think the patrons and TWIST family love it so much because anything can happen. Second, it's like a Rocky Horror Show off Broadway gone wild. Lastly, I'd say it's crazy fun and you get to see your favorite bartender in drag and they drag you along with them for the ride. SK: Turnabout is a night of fun for everyone to explore their femininity and patrons and TWIST staff to bond in a fabulous manner.

IN PRINT DIGITAL ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA RC: What do you think is the most fun part of Turnabout? MT: I think it's watching the people's reactions and fun that everyone has together. SK: I love being shocked every year by how enthusiastic everyone gets about it. The people who you would least expect to enjoy it are the ones who put on the best show. RC: What is your fondest memory of previous TWIST Turnabouts? MT: It is a few years back when I was living in New York and Richard and Joel flew me down to do Turnabout and I performed alongside my Kiki-sister Duni Bauta, and when Nathan Smith came out and did his rendition of Liza Minnelli's "Single Ladies." SK: My fondest memory would have to be Mario Trejo's return to the stage in 2015, doing three costume changes, a red carpet and guest performers. RC: What are you looking forward to the most during Turnabout 2017? MT: It is what I always look forward to and that's making sure that all of TWIST's patrons and friends have a blast! SK: I'm always looking forward to topping the show I put on the previous year. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about TWIST's Turnabout 2017? MT: Another thing I'd like to share is for anyone who also wants to dress up and turnabout with us is more than welcome, in fact it's encouraged. It's an added bonus to kiki alongside our friends and family that help keep this tradition going on and have kept TWIST going strong and proud for 24 years! SK: Get into it! You have no idea how much you are actually going to enjoy yourself, and you will be surprised about what personalities you didn't know you had inside of you.
