PEPPERMINT f you've ever sucked on a peppermint candy, you know how its sweet taste comes on and eventually leaves a slightly stinging aftertaste. The new aptly named Jennifer Garner film is just like that. It starts sweetly enough and then dives into the stinging world of violent, action-packed revenge thriller.

If you get the feeling that this film is going to be like her smart action-packed TV show Alias, think again. Just like peppermint, that show was sweet; this one isn't… not at all. Yet Jennifer Garner is as appealing a heroine as she ever was, the woman you'd never expect to be as unstoppable, explosive, and violent as a bomb. With the rash of strong female lead films about in the world these days, this film takes that gender-bending character to another level. If you thought Zoe Saldana's Colombiana character was the acme of violent revenge driven females, you're wrong, it pales in both violence and body count.

derers and turns them loose. Dropping off the grid, Riley spends the next 5 years honing a "very particular set of skills" that turns her into an unstoppable urban guerrilla back to exact her own personal brand of punishment on the people who wronged her.

If this all sounds a bit familiar it's understandable, Director Pierre Morel knows the territory very well, he directed Taken, Gunman, and From Paris With Love – all similarly fashioned action films. Garner is a joy to behold, but Morel uses his heavy-handed touch with action sequences to load this film with every conceivable stunt or violent action you could think of for her to exact her revenge. It would have been as much fun to watch as the original Death Wish if the body count wasn't so high that it just eventually numbs you to it all.

Kudos to editor Frédéric Thoraval (Sinister) for a superb job keeping the movie moving, and to John Ortiz (Detective Moises Beltran) whose performance was flawless.

t's amazing that a war hasn't been fought over honey.

Yes, honey – the sweet, viscous food substance produced by bees and some related insects, with bees producing honey from the sugary secretions of plants; or other insects through regurgitation, enzymatic activity, and water evaporation.

But there is honey. And while, yes, it is a sugar with similar calories to all sugar and thus something to consider, it has other health factors that can't be ignored. It is rich in antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits, improves bad cholesterol levels and blood pressure, can lower triglycerides, is good for the heart and better for diabetics than any other sugar. And those are just the ones with hard science behind them. Sourced honey has even more potential benefits. Given its relationship to local flora, eating honey produced by bees in your general area can also positively impact allergies from local sources and build your immune system's resistance to local allergens.

OK, so, sure, it is the stuff of research papers, but it also a sweetener with a delicious, distinct, flavor. How best for the home chef to take advantage of that?

INGREDIENTS

1. Remove the thawed phyllo from the fridge 1 hour before using. When working with the phyllo dough, only remove the sheets you immediately need, keeping the other sheets covered in plastic wrap, then a damp cloth.

2. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Melt 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) of the butter in a small saucepan.

3. Toss together the chopped pecans and cinnamon in a bowl.

Set aside.

4. Thoroughly butter a rectangular baking pan with the melted butter. Make sure the sheets of phyllo will generally fit in the pan. (If they're a little bigger, that's okay; if they're much bigger, just trim them with a sharp knife.)

5. Butter the top sheet of phyllo with melted butter, then grab it and the unbuttered sheet below it. Flip the sheets over and set them in the pan buttered-side down. Press them lightly into the pan. Repeat this twice more, so that you have 6 sheets of phyllo in the pan, 3 of the sheets buttered.

6. Sprinkle on enough pecans to make a single layer. Butter 2 sheets of phyllo and place them on top of the pecans buttered-sides down. Add more pecans, then 2 more buttered phyllo sheets. Repeat this a couple more times, or until you're out of pecans. Top with 4 more buttered phyllo sheets, buttered-sides down. Butter the top of the final sheet.

7. Cut a diagonal diamond pattern in the baklava using a very sharp knife. Bake until very golden brown, about 45 minutes.

8. While the baklava is baking, combine the honey, sugar, vanilla, 1/2 cup water and the remaining 1 stick of butter in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low.

9. When you remove the baklava from the oven, drizzle half of the honey mixture evenly all over the top. Allow it to sit and absorb for a minute, then drizzle on a little more until you think it's thoroughly moistened.

10. Allow the baklava to cool, uncovered, for several hours.

Once cool and sticky and divine, carefully remove from the pan and serve with coffee (or give as gifts!).

COOK'S NOTE

To thaw the phyllo dough, remove the package from the freezer and place it in the fridge for 24 hours. (Recipe Ree Drummond/Food Network) Being a honey lover but not a baker, I use honey around the house in a number of ways: • Any yogurt or ice cream based dessert is improved with honey • Many friends have begun to use honey to sweeten their coffee (tea has long been standard) for the nutritional benefits and for the "healthier" sugar • Warm, fresh bread, real butter and honey is about the most simple dessert after a heavy meal – particularly a Greek or Middle Eastern themed meal • Oatmeal is entirely more appealing with a spoonful of honey If you think of honey as a healthier alternative to other types of sugars, the possibilities are endless. If you bake, this is particularly true – honey cakes, cheesecake, struffoli, etc.

Now if you think of honey as one of the world's earliest "superfoods," then you might also wonder how a war wasn't fought over it in ancient times.

Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about Disney on Ice presents Mickey's Search Party. What is the show about?

Rebecca Neudorfer: The show is about Mickey and his pals as they follow Captain Hook's treasure map for clues to find Tinker Bell's wand that his swashbuckling pirates stole. While looking for the wand, we find ourselves inside different Disney stories and adventures, including journeying across the Marigold Bridge with Miguel from Coco into the magnificent and mystical Land of the Dead, traveling into the wintry world of Arendelle from Frozen and sailing across the ocean with Moana.

RC: Who was your favorite Disney character growing up and why?

RN: My favorite Disney character growing up was and still is Ariel from The Little Mermaid. I love her red hair!

RC: How did you become part of Disney on Ice's Mickey's Search Party?

RN: I have been touring with Disney on Ice for six years. When I heard about the opportunity to be a part of a new and exciting show, I didn't hesitate!

RC: What do you like the most about this show?

RN: There is a lot about this show I'm excited for.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the music.

All the songs we know and love have such a fun, upbeat spin to them. You will sing along, but you'll also want to get up and dance! Also, this show welcomes guests into the magical world of Disney on Ice, with surprising character interactions. In fact, characters emerge from the stands and interact with the audience. It is so fun to see the audience included and involved in the show.

RC: Why should Wire Magazine readers go see Mickey's Search Party?

RN: Your readers should come to see Mickey's Search Party because it's not like any other Disney on Ice show. This brand-new show has more than just world-class figure skating to see, but also high-flying acrobatics and unexpected aerial stunts on the ice!

RC: What does it take to become a successful Disney on Ice performer?

RN: For competitive skaters, they know a little about discipline. To become a Disney on Ice performer, the first thing you do is send in a video of your skating skills, or an in-person audition in some cases. To be successful, I suggest showing good quality skating skills. They want to see you project out to the audience and just show that you love to skate!

RC: How did you get into ice skating?

RN: The story my mother always told me was that when I was two the Olympics were on TV and I just sat and stared at the television. A two-year-old rarely sits still for a long period of time, so my mom knew something then. When I was four years old, I saw a commercial for an ice rink near my house, and I said I wanted to do that for my birthday! I guess I haven't stopped since.

RC: What is the most challenging part of your job as a performer for Disney on Ice? RN: All jobs have their ups and downs. The biggest challenge for me on tour is cooking or trying to cook. Staying healthy and being creative with my food choices. Also, being away from family for so long. Thank goodness we have Facetime and Wi-Fi almost everywhere we go.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?

RN: The show will be such a fun experience for people of all ages. Not only are there figure skaters but we have acrobatics up in the air and Disney characters in the audience! You'll have to come and see for yourself.

RC: Tell us about your career so far with Disney on Ice and why you decided to become part of these Disney shows on ice.

RN: I had been skating for a long time and didn't want to compete anymore. My coach suggested I audition for a show, and Disney on Ice was the first that came to my mind. This is my seventh tour with the company, and it's always a blast. I've been to places I never even considered on my list of places to go! It's been such a fun experience being able to perform in so many different locations. I have learned a lot about myself as I've grown up on tour.

n case you haven't noticed yet, gay is in again; or I guess "out," depending on how you look at it. Back in the '80s androgyny was all the rage in the music scene. Boys looked like girls (Boy George), girls pretended to be boys (Annie Lennox) and being bi was the norm. It was glorious! However, like every trend, those glory days eventually came to an end and we got pushed back into the closet.

Bisexual artists suddenly turned straight and being out meant the end of your music career; at least as far as the mainstream was concerned.

Bloom is the long-anticipated follow-up to Sivan's epic 2015 debut album Blue Neighbourhood. As 2018 rolled around, the 23-year-old rang in the new year by kissing his model boyfriend, then unleashing Bloom's first single "My My My" and dominating the American charts for the first time. Since then he's dropped three more singles, including the infectious title track and his mesmerizing duet "Dance to This" with Pop Princess, Ariana Grande. OK, now that you're all caught up, let's talk about the rest of the album:

Compared to his previous work, Bloom is both a little more dancey and a little bit deeper.

The set opens up with "Seventeen" a story Sivan says is about a hook-up he had with an older man he met on Grindr. Besides sexual experiences, Sivan also touches on love and of course break-ups, like the heart-wrenching piano ballad "Postcard" or the guitar-driven "The Good Side." There are a few upbeat moments like on "Lucky Strike" and "Plum" where you'll get why some people have dubbed him as the male Taylor Swift. Besides sharing the same initials, Sivan has also become the voice of the new generation. Only in his case, he speaks for the LGBTQ fans who have ever felt out of place, been madly, inexplicably in love or just had a forbidden fling. So pretty much all of us.

Troye Sivan kicks off his U.S. tour this month in Texas, but you can catch him in Miami on Sept 29.
