What Is Mytesi? n the era of Trump and his anti-LGBTQ policies, it is crucial that our community remain steadfast in our fight to preserve our rights and to achieve full equality. On Saturday, October 7, from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, the National LGBTQ Task Force takes over the iconic Fontainebleau Miami Beach (4441 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) to honor heroes and advance equality. The Task Force Gala – Miami, in its 21st year, is a night for the who's who of the South Florida LGBTQ community to come together and celebrate us. I caught up with this year's Gala Chair, Josue Santiago, for a Q&A on this premier community event and how you can be a part of it. Rafa Carvajal: Tell our readers about this year's National LGBTQ Task Force Gala and why they should attend. Josue Santiago: The Task Force Gala – Miami is an incredible event. It's a time when we can get together, dress to impress and have the opportunity to step away from the noise for just one instant to celebrate our heroes. Our theme this year is "Freedom, Beauty, Truth and Love" because we believe that these bohemian ideals define a lot of what we hope to experience in today's world. Our emcee will be the award-winning Broadway singer and actress, Andrea Burns. She is an incredible and versatile performer and we're so thrilled to have her serve as the ringmaster of the evening. Aside from the great entertainment and fun with 700 of the who's who in South Florida, we're really coming together to celebrate our heroes and raise funds for the Task Force, as well as great local organizations. Last year alone, the monies helped fund the critical work of more than 30 organizations, many of which I'm sure your readers have benefited from. The mission of the National LGBTQ Task Force advances full freedom, justice and culture, she has influenced generations and global communities. What is TRUVADA for PrEP?
Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?
TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you: Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP: You must continue to use safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP: Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months. If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you. Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have HBV and stop taking TRUVADA, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health.
What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA. Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored� urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. Bone problems, including bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA. If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in breast milk. All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-thecounter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include certain medicines to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Vézina: As founding president of the BBCM Foundation, I have organized the Festival for 27 years to support organizations providing direct assistance to people with HIV/AIDS. The BBCM Foundation has already awarded more than $2 million in financial donations, as well as contributions, such as free tickets for community organizations, products and services to the community, health promotion, etc. Black & Blue is also a tourism related event. Since its conception, hundreds of thousands of tourists have converged in Montréal during the Canadian Thanksgiving and American Columbus Day Weekend and produced millions of dollars in economic benefits. Tourism Québec and Tourism Montréal, two organizations that perceived the importance of the Festival and its evolution through the years, also fund it.

I sat down with Robert J. Vézina, the founding president of the BBCM Foundation, who has organized the Festival for 27 years, to learn more about what attendees can expect.
RC: What is your role in the Festival? RJV: I am the founding president and executive director. RC: What are you looking forward to the most about this year's Festival? RJV: Having DJs Roger Sanchez and Victor Calderone perform at the main event during the same night! It's very rare that these two incredible DJs are present at the same event, we are very excited to have them both. RC: What are the main Festival events taking place this year? Explain the lineup. RJV: Luminosity 2017 Black & Blue: Montréal shines bright! From October 5 to 9, Montréal will move to the beat of the Black & Blue Festival. The main event will be held overnight in the spectacular Pierre-Charbonneau Amphitheater (located in the Olympic Park at 3000 Viau Street, Viau subway station) on Sunday, October 8 from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. the following morning. The internationally renowned Erez Ben Ishay (Tel Aviv), Roger Sanchez (New York) and Victor Calderone (New York) have been confirmed on the list of DJs. Shows will be presented all night, in an immersive dance floor with cutting edge lighting technology, in a unique and totally festive ambiance. Some other key events during the festival include the President's Cocktail – Montréal 375th Special Edition (Thursday, October 5); Leather Ball '375 Degrees' at Bain Mathieu (Friday, October 6); and Twinkle 'Diverse-City' Party (Saturday, October 7), a 2017 novelty for the younger crowd and its friends. f you love films, you must attend the 9th edition of the Fort Lauderdale OUTshine Film Festival (October 6-15), featuring over 30 new films, great community events and honoring LGBTQ actor and activist Tommy Dorfman with the Lavender Award for excellence in LGBTQ film. Tommy plays the role of Ryan Shaver in Netflix's 13 Reasons Why and is a vocal supporter of LGBTQ rights. OUTshine's opening night event kicks off at 8 p.m. in the NSU Art Museum Theatre with the screening of Close Knit (a Japanese film that won the Teddy Jury Award and the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year), followed by the red carpet and gala party. I interviewed Joe Bilancio, OUTshine Film Festival's director of programming, to learn more about this year's films and how the festival is put together. RC: What are the highlights of the upcoming OUTshine Film Festival? JB: I would not be kidding if I said they are all highlights, ha-ha. Of course, the opening night film Close Knit, which goes beyond the typical trans narrative and creates a sweet story that will be adored by all. Tom of Finland, the centerpiece film, goes beyond what you think you know about the man who created one of, if not the most iconic figure in gay culture and it's a narrative. Saturday Church will have everyone on their feet singing and dancing in the aisles, yet it's a poignant tale that needs to be seen. RC: Which films do you think will stand out most and why? JB: High Low Forty, as it is a well crafted American indie film that many will relate to as family, and especially brothers. Its dry humor will play well to this audience. The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin, Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall and Chavela are all amazing documentaries that bring us up-close and personal with people who we might think we know... but do we?

SPOTLIGHT FILMS: RC: Which films are your personal favorites and why did you like them so much? JB: OK, I knew it was coming. I hate, hate, hate the question, as there are so many favorites and for various reasons... but I love Rift. It is a genre film that is hard to classify as elements of supernatural, romance, drama and a few others are evident. It takes place in Iceland and the rugged beauty and isolation play such an important role. I also love Kiss Me, as it is just silly and campy enough without going over the edge, and how many women can't relate to having 72 exes? RC: Why is OUTshine so important for our community and LGBTQ filmmaking in general? JB: I think my answer might have been a little different even a few weeks ago, but now more than ever it is an escape to a place where we are still free to be who we are, and an opportunity to see ourselves portrayed on-screen. It is a chance to have a little fun and spend time together in a world that has its share of difficult times. While we are lucky to live in an area that is open and accepting for the most part, there are still members of our community who don't have that amity, and we provide that to them... even if just for a week.

RC: Explain the process OUTshine goes through in selecting the films for the upcoming Festival. JB: That sounds so easy and matter of fact, and it really isn't. But there are basically a few parts. We look at major festivals and see what LGBTQ films they have and try to get those films to take a look at and see if they make sense for our audience, as all audiences are different. We also have filmmakers send us films to take a look at. Once we have the pool of films, we then utilize a wonderful screening committee that watches and evaluates the films again, mainly on the merits of the films, but also the "fit" for the audience. The joy of the committee is that they are a microcosm of the audience and not film professionals who often look at films differently than audiences. With that knowledge, we decide what best fits the festival.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about the Festival or any of the films? JB: I think they need to know that we are not just films. We have parties, special events, and access to filmmakers for Q&A session and informal meet and greets. Also, festival films are not scary, ethereal films. While often provoking and timely, they are also pure entertainment like no other. Take a chance and I think you will be happy you did. 120 BEATS PER MINUTE (120 BATTEMENTS PAR MINUTE) (France, 2017) Director: Robin Campillo In French, with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsis: In the early 1990s, with AIDS having already claimed countless lives for nearly ten years, ACT UP-PARIS activists multiply actions to fight general indifference. Nathan, a newcomer to the group, has his world shaken up by Sean, a radical militant who throws his last bits of strength to the struggle for rights, access to treatment, and to be more than a statistic. 120 Beats Per Minute is more than a historical epic of the ACT UP movement in Paris; it is a beautiful story of deep love that is rarely seen on-screen.

RC: What is your job at OUTshine Film Festival and what does your role entail? JB: I am the director of programming, and to boil it down to a simple sounding description, I find the films, watch the films, have the committee watch the films and then decide what films will make up the Festival.
AFTER LOUIE (U.S., 2017) Director: Vincent Gagliostro OUTshine Synopsis: Sam (Alan Cumming), is an artist/ activist from ACT UP who lived through the early years of HIV/AIDS. He is scarred and still struggling with survivor's guilt. He is bewildered by a younger generation of carefree gay men with their uninhibited use of social media, sexting, and seeming political indifference, but when he meets the seductive young Braeden (Zachary Booth) their pants quickly come down and, eventually, so does Sam's guard. As the pair become increasingly intimate, an intergenerational relationship blossoms between them-one capable of reawakening Sam's artistic soul and reviving his wilted heart. AGAINST THE LAW (UK, 2017) Director: Fergus O'Brien OUTshine Synopsis: The film follows the affair between celebrated Fleet Street journalist Peter Wildeblood and serviceman Eddy McNally. The exposure of their relationship had devastating consequences, leading to public vilification and prison sentences for Wildeblood and his friends Michael Pitt-Rivers and Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. Enduring a year-long incarceration that involved attempts to alter his sexual orientation, Wildeblood emerged with a determination to challenge the draconian laws that shattered the lives of generations of gay men. The narrative is interspersed with commentary from many of the actual people portrayed in the film. B&B (UK, 2017) Director: Joe Ahearne OUTshine Synopsis: Handsome gay Londoners Marc and Fred plan a weekend of mischief, returning to bait the owner of a remote B&B who they successfully sued a year prior for not allowing them to share a bed. Events take a deadly turn when another guest, with far more sinister intentions, arrives. Marc and Fred's weekend of fun turns into a suspenseful battle for survival in this smart, comedic dark thriller. B&B will keep you guessing 'til the end. CLOSE KNIT (KARERA GA HONKI DE AMU TOKI WA) (Japan, 2017) Director: Naoko Ogigami In Japanese with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsis: After being abandoned by her mother yet again, 11-year-old Tomo moves in with her good-natured uncle Makio, only to find that he is now living with his transgender girlfriend Rinko. Though a bit surprised at first, Tomo soon bonds with Rinko, a soft-spoken caretaker who makes exquisite lunch boxes. Rinko teaches Tomo to knit and showers her with motherly warmth. Though faced with prejudices and challenges, the three reimagine the nuclear family, on their own terms. Close Knit is a big-hearted film that depicts an alternative family structure with gentle candor.

The cruise promises seven days of sunshine, love, and freedom – but on board are also their personal stories, their doubts and uncertainties. Through it all Dream Boat shows us once and for all that each of us needs, craves and wants the same thing: someone to love us for exactly who we are. FAMILIES LIKE YOURS (U.S., 2017) Director: Rodolfo Eduardo Moro OUTshine Synopsis: Through candid interviews and humorous real life stories, Families Like Yours demystifies LGBTQ families and their lives, showcasing that they are just as loving, busy, and complicated as any other family. The film follows six families as they attempt to balance work and school, rush kids to sports practice, and deal with diaper duty. From across the nation and in all different stages of family life, from conception to grandchildren, these families represent a cross-section of the modern American family – the only difference is that they are LGBTQ families. FREAK SHOW (U.S., 2017) Director: Trudie Styler OUTshine Synopsis: In the vein of Clueless and Napoleon Dynamite, Freak Show tells the moving, heartwarming, and hilarious story of Billy Bloom, a boldly confident, wildly eccentric teenager, who faces intolerance and persecution at his ultra conservative high school, and decides to fight back on behalf of all the misunderstood freaks of the world by running for homecoming queen. Starring Alex Lawther with Laverne Cox and Bette Midler. GOD'S OWN COUNTRY (UK, 2017) Director: Francis Lee OUTshine Synopsis: Johnny Saxby works long hours on his family's remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking and casual sex. But when a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before. As they begin working closely together, an intense relationship starts to form which could change Johnny's life forever. God's Own Country is captivating and broodingly beautiful and a must see! I DREAM IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE (SUEÑO EN OTRO IDIOMA) (Mexico, 2017) Director: Ernesto Contreras In Spanish with English subtitles OUTshine Synopsis: An indigenous language (Zikril) is in peril as its last two speakers had a quarrel in the past and haven't spoken to each other in over 50 years. Martín, a young linguist, will undertake the challenge to bring the old friends back together so he can obtain a recorded history of the language and study it. Miguel and Diego are neighbors and friends. Miguel is a dishwasher who dreams of settling in New York waiting for a visa that never seems to arrive. Diego is a homosexual suffering from AIDS who puts his dreams and cheerfulness to good use in his struggle to carry on enjoying every single day of his life from his bed. This peculiar pair are surrounded by an oddball set of characters from all walks of life. SATURDAY CHURCH (U.S., 2017) Director: Damon Cardasis OUTshine Synopsis: Working single mother, Amara, leaves her two boys at home with their domineering Aunt Rose. Rose has her eyes on the older son Ulysses as he steals nylons and wears his mother's shoes. Ulysses is just beginning to explore his identity and sexuality. When Rose demands an end to it, the boy escapes to the Village and discovers both supportive friends and the inspiration to become exactly what he is feeling inside.
