COASTAL MAINE hen you hear the expression "a tour along the coast" or some derivative, certain images might come to mind: secluded beaches abutting bathtub warm water, tropical splendor, tiki bars and waves suited for surfing. Maybe you even envision a certain stretch of waterfront – either Florida coast, the Pacific Coast Highway or Amalfi.

You probably don't think potential blizzards and temperatures near zero, water much too cold to get into, fragrant fishing boats and not a spa to be seen for miles.

What?

Welcome to coastal Maine, home to miles and miles of coast unlike any other in the country and... well, not exactly what you might envision as you'd made your plans. Fortunately, it is even better than that. And, oh yes, the end of summer might just be the best time for a road trip tour of the coast of Maine.

Yes, Maine has tony sections such as Bar Harbor, quaint but upscale cities and more than a few places that will conjure up memories of the last Stephen King novel you actually read.

But the "real" Maine is far more authentically

A lot of things have been said about Maine, with the most honest perhaps being that it is the northernmost Southern state in the country. It isn't an insult. It's praise for the no-nonsense, rural atmosphere and salt-of-the-earth residents who are as slow to anger as they are quick to laugh, and who proudly recall those who came before them, carving this state out from a mountainous rugged seaside and an interior that remains, to this day, wild and largely untamed.

Southern Maine's Kennebunkport is probably the best known resort-ish town in Maine. Besides good food, there is plenty to see and do here. The Ocean Avenue scenic drive is exquisite and quintessential coastal Maine. Arts and handcrafts are ubiquitous in the state and you'll find the Seashore Trolley Museum, Mast Cove Galleries, among many others, are well worth a visit; as are beaches Kennebunk Beach and Goose Rocks Beach. There are numerous lux hotels and resorts here too, many rich in character, just not necessarily Maine-specific.

Done with the glitterati? Good, it's time to move on. Toss the map. Forget the GPS. And head north along the coast and a coastal islands of Maine for as much time as you can to explore the uncelebrated coast – a name you might never have heard of and might never hear of again, but which you will remember your entire life.

Mostly small towns and villages dot the landscape between Kennebunkport and Bar Harbor and then beyond. You'll want to follow up on signs denoting locations, scenic routes, historic sites and other attractions. Throughout the hundreds of miles, you will find: • spectacular views unlike any others in the country • countless art galleries, artisan workshops, boutique bakeries (the visual arts and master mode ship makers are particularly worth mention) • cozy, friendly B&Bs you could easily envision yourself spending weeks at • friendly, charismatic locals – from artists and fishermen to cooks and a new generation of Maine residents committed to perpetuating Maine's maritime-artisan legacy And then there is the seafood. Wire Magazine sat down with Les Farfadais Artistic Director and Technical Co-Director Stéphane Haffner and performer Lucas Suarez to learn more about Les Farfadais and their artistic talents. Rafa Carvajal: What is Les Farfadais and what is the inspiration behind it?

Stéphane Haffner: Les Farfadais is a contemporary art circus company that I created 20 years ago.

Les Farfadais is a mix of the athletic world with the competing gymnasts that I learned at circus and fashion school. Everything in Les Farfadais is very focused on the fashion and costumes. Fifty percent of our show is about the visuals, so there is a very big interest in making the body look good and to highlight the female and male physique. The universe of Les Farfadais draws a lot of inspiration from Manga cartoons.

It's a fantasy world where you will find dragons, fairy tales, mermaids, superheroes and all kinds of fantastic creatures. Everything is mixed together to highlight beauty. The beauty of movement, the body and the visuals the audience is going to experience. #34 2018 WIREMAG.COM 15

RC: Why did you decide to start Les Farfadais?

SH: I was actually a gymnast previously and did competitions from 6 to 17 years old. I stopped competing at 17 due to a back injury and thought that my career was over at the time. I then went to study fashion design in Paris. When I started at the university, I had to make some money. Since I did gymnastics, I thought I could try to do some street performances and that's how everything started.

The first day I did a performance on the street, doing some acrobatics wearing a strange costume, I made about $600 in just two hours. I had a show that was about 10 minutes long, which I repeated five to six times. So I started to do this daily in a very interesting spot in Paris, with a lot of people walking by, in front of Centre Pompidou and that's how I met a lot of people in show business. Later on, I actually decided to partner with my brother and we created a new company together, so now we are both owners of Les Farfadais. He did the industrial design and works on all the inflatables and props used in the show. We complete each other in a way that our differences help us bring new ideas and elements into the show.

RC: Where can Wire Magazine readers see the show?

SH: We work with Celebrity Cruises and have a show called Euphoria that is currently running on Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Eclipse and Celebrity Reflection. Lucas is actually one of our acrobats in Euphoria, going from ship to ship. This show is more of a family show but it still has all of the Farfadais elements – sensuality, fantasy and Manga characters. It is currently the most voted show on Celebrity Cruises. We are finalizing the dates, but we plan on coming to Florida next February, and Provincetown in June, July and August.

RC: Tell us about your work with Les Farfadais?

What do you enjoy the most about it?

Lucas Suarez: I'm currently working on a cruise ship with Celebrity Cruises, where I perform in the production shows, one of them being Euphoria from Les Farfadais. What I enjoy most is working with such an excellent group of people that Les Farfadais provides.

RC: Where did the name Les Farfadais come from?

SH: The word farfadais has two meanings in French. The spelling of both words isn't exactly the same and we play around with that. The scientific meaning refers to the lighting we don't see, the ones that go up the clouds and into the universe. I love that meaning because we are an aerial company and fly above the audience. The second meaning is spelled differently but sounds exactly the same. It means a fairy – a unisex, magical creature that lives in the forest. Both of the meanings are very interesting because one is more about us flying above the audience and projected into the universe, and the other one is also related to all of our fantasy and cartoonish world.

RC: What is your favorite act in the show, and why?

SH: I actually got married two years ago to my beautiful husband.

He's one of the acrobats in the company and, since he joined, we actually fell in love pretty quickly. We started to work together and created several acts. My favorite one is our main act together – the Duo Hoop – a very nice duo where we do a lot of difficult acrobatic tricks. There's also meaning behind it because we participated in Italy's Got Talent and right after, on live TV, I asked him to marry me. Every time we perform this act, it is very special to me.

At the time there were no LGBTQ rights in Italy, so it created a giant scandal there and in several countries. I had a lot of support from LGBTQ people all over the world as well as hate. Six months after, because of the scandal, the European Union told Italy they had to do something about LGBTQ rights because they are part of human rights. At that point, civil unions were legalized in Italy. This makes me very happy and proud because I was able to bring change through my art, even politically. Since that day, Les Farfadais pushes LGBTQ rights forward.

RC: What is your greatest strength as a performer for Les Farfadais, and why?

LS: I think as a performer for Farfadais my strength is connecting with the team on stage and off stage. All acts are duos or group acts performing together, so it is important to have good chemistry with everyone.

RC: How do you leverage your great physical condition in Les Farfadais' new shows?

LS: It's always beneficial for performing new shows, especially one like Euphoria, to be more expressive using my body.

RC: What do you enjoy the most about performing with Les Farfadais?

SH: Being able to perform with my husband in a homoerotic show where I can be 100% myself, and show him my love without being ashamed of my body or sexuality. That is what I'm most grateful and excited about. This is the only show I perform in and love. I spend most of my time directing and teaching nowadays, organizing the cast since we are over 120 acrobats in the company.

RC: How involved are you with Les Farfadais as one of the founders nowadays?

SH: It is my life. I wake up, live and dream Farfadais. Of course, it is a passion and I love what I do. There are, of course, two sides to it. I'm a lucky person because I can work and make money with my passion, and the company is pretty successful, so I'm very satisfied. At the same time, since it is my passion, I never stop working. I'm constantly doing stuff for the company. Right now, it is 5:30 a.m. and I am doing this interview because it is the only time I had available. We have a new show starting in Barcelona in two days. We just got off the Atlantis Cruise yesterday and we have been setting up the show from 6 a.m. till 11 p.m. I only slept four hours and now I can't sleep because I have so many things to do. So that's my life, full-time Farfadais.

RC: What is the goal of Les Farfadais and where do you see it going in the next five years?

SH: We've been working hard and the company gets bigger and bigger every year. It's a big success and I'm very happy with everyone we work with. It makes me happy to see that all of the new acrobats and performers love working with us, even if it's hard work. I've just begun self-producing shows, and in five years I hope that they will be successful. At some point, I would also love to bring the show to Vegas through a hotel or some kind of partnership.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?

SH: I think the most beautiful thing in life is to follow your dreams. I struggled when I was young, but I created my own world and company. If you have a dream and you want to do something, it is possible to do it. You just have to commit yourself to your passion and ideas, and you will get whatever it is you want.

RC: Tell our readers about yourself. Where are you from?

LS: I come from a small town called Grand Bourg in the province of Buenos Aires, located just an hour away from the capital of Argentina. I have always wanted to be a circus performer and started my training at a young age. I am now 20 years old and am happy to say I have achieved my goal of becoming a professional artist.

RC: How do you stay in such great shape?

LS: I train twice a day every day, doing handstands and aerial straps, which helps to keep my body strong, accompanied by healthy eating.

RC: What do you like the most about modeling for photography?

LS: I love sharing and spreading my passion for the circus in every possible shot.

RC: Describe your experience shooting with David Vance.

LS: My experience shooting with David was great. He is extremely professional with a detailed eye for what he wants. It's easy to see his work goes past knowledge of the art and is truly a passion of his.

RC: Describe yourself in three words.

LS: Passionate, persevering, dreamer.

RC: What is your favorite pastime?

LS: My favorite pastime is being able to travel and explore all the wonderful places I'm fortunate enough to visit with my job.

RC: Where would you travel if you could go anywhere, and why?

LS: I would go back to Bora Bora, French Polynesia. Relaxing with stunning views everywhere and apart from the big cities.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?

LS: I would like to say thank you to all my teachers and parents who made me the person I am today, professionally and personally.
