Many, if not most, people of a certain age remember a seminal moment in their youth. It was August 1, 1981, the first time MTV came on the air, introducing the world to the video for "Video Killed the Radio Star" and a new concept in entertainment – music videos curated and introduced by “video jockeys.” It was like radio, but with lighting, hair and makeup, thus the eternal irony of the first video aired. Because it was the '80s, it was lots of hair and makeup. But from the tiny trademark MTV guy walking on the moon to the one and only Moonwalker, MTV showed itself to be something far more than a vehicle for the burgeoning music video industry. It launched a whole new relationship between performers and fans, became a cultural touchstone and, for many people, it also turned into an absolute icon of youth. Plenty of 40-somethings out there probably remember where they were when MTV launched; the way members of other generations recall influential events that took place in their lifetimes. Music had come alive before our very eyes on video and MTV would go on to transform our lives in the U.S. and around the world. Today, of course, the popular meme for a lot of original fans revolves around them being old enough to remember when Music Television actually had, you know, music. Yes, MTV has changed over the years and in an internet-ruled society, there is no wonder the whole curated video format wouldn't quite work anymore. Still, there is some music component to it, and most importantly, it maintains both an association with music and a massive youthful audience. It continues to set trends in entertainment and fashion and, yes, even music videos. That's why the MTV Video Music Awards remain such a huge deal for competing performers and for their legions of fans. In this week's issue of Wire Magazine, music writer DJ FR8-O previews this year's VMAs, complete with predictions of who should walk away with the little moon men. Of course, with the VMAs today, the spectacle is often less music and more contrived controversy – but even FR8-O can't predict that! You can read all about the VMAs, but not before perusing and enjoying the cover and centerfold spread of model Jason Whidby, shot by acclaimed photographer and frequent Wire Magazine collaborator David Vance. This week we also bring you a preview of Molto South Beach, a new gay restaurant and bar in town that promises to offer a unique place for the LGBTQ community to mingle in South Beach. I sat down with Molto’s key personnel to discuss what this seven-days-a-week gay establishment, where residents and tourists alike will enjoy fun music, refreshing cocktails, delicious food, and live entertainment brought to us by some very familiar faces, will be all about. Finally, Nutrition writer Anthony Reyes has a look at frozen meals and offers a guide on how to determine which fit into your diet regimen and what iced options should be avoided at all costs.

FROZEN MEALS
CAN BUY YOU TIME
ime. It is the one thing we desire more of and the one thing we can't get back. That continual conundrum affects our daily choices – including the food choices that we make. How often do we hit a fast food restaurant for a meal because we're trying to regain lost time? After a long day at work, cooking dinner begins to feel like a chore. Maybe you might consider visiting your frozen food aisle for a meal you can nuke and eat quickly. I'm here to tell you… That's okay!

Not all frozen meals are created equal. Some are better than others. The key is to understand what the recommended nutritional guidelines are for frozen meals to help you make the best choices, gaining the most nutritional value possible, while saving yourself time.
ories per day. Saturated fat should not encompass more than 6% of your total calories; when doing the math that means no more than 13g a day with a 2,000-calorie total. Pop quiz – if the frozen meal is 500 calories, how much saturated fat should be in there? When looking for a good frozen meal option About 3g! in the grocery store, there are certain criteria you want to look for. Frozen meals are known Fiber is the other macronutrient to look for on for being high in sodium – something we want the label. The more fiber the better with any to avoid. Sodium is in everything we eat, so the type of meal, but try to find frozen meals that goal is to not have our entire daily amount in have at least 3g. Lastly, take a look at that one meal (1,500-2,300mg is the recommend- ingredient list. The shorter the list, the better it ed daily intake). When reading the nutrition is for you. Personally, I would recommend if label on the back of the frozen meal, look for you can purchase organic frozen meals, then meals with 500-700mg. go for it. Saturated fat is another key area to look for on the label. Nutrition label values are calculated by looking at what is considered the average caloric intake of a human being – 2,000 cal-
I'm sure you've all seen what a plate should look like – if you haven't, visit myplate.gov. This applies to frozen meals too. The frozen meal purchase should have fruits/veggies,
grains/starches and protein. If the frozen meal doesn't check off all of those boxes, that's okay too! Simply add sides to your meal like a small salad, or a piece fruit, etc. There are studies out there that say the average person makes up to 35,000 decisions each day. Many times those decisions are out of our control, but we have complete control over what we decide to put inside of our bodies. There is nothing wrong with making convenient choices like frozen meals if it is going to help better your overall lifestyle by saving you time. I don't know about you, but that is a decision I can get behind. Always consult a registered dietitian to help determine your individual health and nutrition needs. What is TRUVADA for PrEP?
Who should not take TRUVADA for PrEP?
TRUVADA for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a prescription medicine that is used together with safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 through sex. This use is only for HIV-negative adults who are at high risk of getting HIV-1. To help determine your risk of getting HIV-1, talk openly with your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Ask your healthcare provider if you have questions about how to prevent getting HIV. Always practice safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
Do not take TRUVADA for PrEP if you: ® Already have HIV-1 infection or if you do not know your HIV-1 status. If you are HIV-1 positive, you need to take other medicines with TRUVADA to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. ® Also take certain medicines to treat hepatitis B infection.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION What is the most important information I should know about TRUVADA for PrEP? Before taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must be HIV-negative before you start taking TRUVADA for PrEP. You must get tested to make sure that you do not already have HIV-1. Do not take TRUVADA to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 unless you are confirmed to be HIV-negative. ® Many HIV-1 tests can miss HIV-1 infection in a person who has recently become infected. If you have flu-like symptoms, you could have recently become infected with HIV-1. Tell your healthcare provider if you had a flu-like illness within the last month before starting or at any time while taking TRUVADA for PrEP. Symptoms of new HIV-1 infection include tiredness, fever, joint or muscle aches, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, night sweats, and/or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin. While taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® You must continue to use safer sex practices. Just taking TRUVADA for PrEP may not keep you from getting HIV-1. ® You must stay HIV-negative to keep taking TRUVADA for PrEP: ® Get tested for HIV-1 at least every 3 months. ® If you think you were exposed to HIV-1, tell your healthcare provider right away. ® To further help reduce your risk of getting HIV-1: ® Know your HIV status and the HIV status of your partners. ® Get tested for other sexually transmitted infections. Other infections make it easier for HIV to infect you. ® Get information and support to help reduce risky sexual behavior, such as having fewer sex partners. ® Do not miss any doses of TRUVADA. Missing doses may increase your risk of getting HIV-1 infection. ® If you do become HIV-1 positive, you need more medicine than TRUVADA alone to treat HIV-1. TRUVADA by itself is not a complete treatment for HIV-1. If you have HIV-1 and take only TRUVADA, your HIV-1 may become harder to treat over time. TRUVADA can cause serious side effects: ® Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. TRUVADA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have HBV and stop taking TRUVADA, your HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking TRUVADA without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to monitor your health.
What are the other possible side effects of TRUVADA for PrEP? Serious side effects of TRUVADA may also include: ® Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests to check your kidneys before and during treatment with TRUVADA. If you develop kidney problems, your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking TRUVADA. ® Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. ® Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. ® Bone problems, including bone pain, softening, or thinning, which may lead to fractures. Your healthcare provider may do tests to check your bones. Common side effects in people taking TRUVADA for PrEP are stomach-area (abdomen) pain, headache, and decreased weight. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking TRUVADA for PrEP? ® All your health problems. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have or have had any kidney, bone, or liver problems, including hepatitis. ® If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if TRUVADA can harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking TRUVADA for PrEP, talk to your healthcare provider to decide if you should keep taking TRUVADA. ® If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. If you become HIV-positive, HIV can be passed to the baby in breast milk. ® All the medicines you take, including prescription and over-thecounter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TRUVADA may interact with other medicines. Keep a list of all your medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. ® If you take certain other medicines with TRUVADA, your healthcare provider may need to check you more often or change your dose. These medicines include certain medicines to treat hepatitis C (HCV) infection. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.FDA.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

ne of the biggest nights in music is almost here – the MTV Video Music Awards. Now in its 33rd year, the iconic show not only celebrates the best new music from across all genres, it's become legendary for some of the most shocking moments in TV history. Who will be annihilating the Twitterverse on Sunday, August 27? With Katy Perry tapped to "swish swish" the hosting duties this year, it could be anyone's guess. In the meantime, here are the 2017 VMA nominees and my winning picks. Bon AppÊtit!

BEST NEW ARTIST Khalid Kodak Black SZA Young M.A Noah Cyrus Julia Michaels If there was a poster child for emotional dysfunction, this chick would be it. We got our first taste of her last year as a featured vocalist on Kygo's "Carry Me." Since then, she's unleashed her debut EP Nervous System featuring her top 10 single (and my new anthem) "Issues." Besides having a unique voice, her songs have a way of connecting with your heart while sticking to your brain. Qualities that could snag her even more awards next year.
BEST COLLABORATION Calvin Harris ft. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean – "Feels" The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey – "Closer" Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez – "We Don't Talk Anymore" D.R.A.M. ft. Lil Yachty – "Broccoli" Zayn & Taylor Swift – "I Don't Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker)" DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller – "Wild Thoughts" Unlike the other categories, this was a no-brainer. Not that anything featuring Rihanna can do no wrong (well maybe), but as far as requests go, this one has by far been at the top of the list at every one of my sets. And with good reason. Not only do we get the rhythm and beats that made us fall in love with RiRi in the first place, we get a sweet nod to the legendary guitarist Santana.

Miley Cyrus – "Malibu" Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane – "Down" Shawn Mendes – "Treat You Better" Ed Sheeran – "Shape Of You" Harry Styles – "Sign Of The Times" Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley – "Chained To The Rhythm" Never mind how this song seems to swirl around in our heads hours after hearing it, but wouldn't want to take a spin on some of those gravity-defying rides in this video? With four nominations on deck and her VMA hosting debut, this could be a sign that Katy's rocky year is about to take a turn for the better.

BEST HIP HOP Kendrick Lamar – "HUMBLE." Big Sean – "Bounce Back" D.R.A.M. ft. Lil Yachty – "Broccoli" Migos ft. Lil Uzi Vert – "Bad & Boujee" DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper & Lil Wayne – "I'm The One" Chance the Rapper – "Same Drugs" There are so many reasons why his mix tape Coloring Book won a Grammy for "Best Rap Album" earlier this year, and this song is just one of them. Even the video takes a detour from the typical thong-clad hoochies twerking for their lives. Instead we get to see what Chance's guest appearance on The Muppet Show would have looked like had he been around in the late '70s. Not even Statler and Waldorf could deny the level of originality here.
BEST DANCE Zedd and Alessia Cara – "Stay" Kygo and Selena Gomez – "It Ain't Me" Major Lazer ft. Justin Bieber and MØ – "Cold Water" Afrojack ft. Ty Dolla $ign – "Gone" Calvin Harris – "My Way" It was his collaboration with Rihanna that first got our attention in 2011 and his underwear spread for Emporio Armani that sealed the deal in 2015. And although this particular track may not have circled our radar as much as its competition, the video definitely tops them all. The only thing that would've made it better is maybe a few scenes of Calvin in his Calvins.
BEST ROCK
Fall Out Boy – "Young And Menace" These guys have always been notorious for reshaping the sound of modern rock, and the same can be said for their clever music videos. Despite their woof-worthy good looks (which have only gotten better with age), they barely show their faces in this clip, leaving room for the strange yet all-too-familiar story to unfold beautifully, thanks to the brilliant directors Brendan Walter and Mel Soria.

Migos – "Bon Appetit" (Production Designer: Natalie Groce) The Weeknd – "Reminder" (Production Designers: Lamar C Taylor, Christo Anesti) DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller – "Wild Thoughts" (Production Designer: Damian Fyffe) Art may be in the eye of the beholder, but when this beholder watches this vid, he sees bright colors, sexy lighting, gorgeous locations, stylish costumes, steamy choreography and of course Rihanna – all elements that come together seamlessly to bring the song to life without the need for digital effects or gimmicks.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS Kendrick Lamar – "HUMBLE." (Company: Timber/Lead: Jonah Hall) A Tribe Called Quest – "Dis Generation" (Company: Bemo/Lead: Brandon Hirzel) KYLE ft. Lil Yachty – "iSpy" (Company: Gloria FX/Leads: Max Colt & Tomash Kuzmytskyi) Harry Styles – "Sign Of The Times" (Company: ONE MORE/Lead: Cédric Nivoliez) Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley – "Chained To The Rhythm" (Company: MIRADA) As I mentioned before: Flawless! From the flying roller coasters to the human catapults to the flaming cocktails, this vid is nothing but eye candy from start to finish. Maybe not the same flavor as Harry Styles floating across the sky, but still just as sweet.

Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley – "Chained To The Rhythm" (Director: Mathew Cullen) Anybody can point a camera at an artist and make them sing and dance, but creating a magical theme park in an alternate universe that's both retro and futuristic is no easy task. Director Mathew Cullen pulls this off flawlessly with eye-popping costumes, epic sets and mind-blowing visual effects that would make Walt Disney himself a little jealous.
BEST ART DIRECTION
#33 2017 WIREMAG.COM 19
BEST CHOREOGRAPHY Kanye West – "Fade" (Choreographers: Teyana Taylor, Guapo, Jae Blaze, Derek 'Bentley' Watkins) Ariana Grande ft. Nicki Minaj – "Side To Side" (Choreographers: Brian & Scott Nicholson) Kendrick Lamar – "HUMBLE." (Choreographer: Dave Meyers) Fifth Harmony ft. Gucci Mane – "Down" (Choreographer: Sean Bankhead) Sia – "The Greatest" (Choreographer: Ryan Heffington) Sia's videos have always been a choreographer's dream. And not just because of the incredibly talented Maddie Zeigler, the young platinum-wigged dancer featured in five of them. The whimsical choreography has become as much a part of Sia's "package" as the songs they were made for. This clip was even more special because it honors the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub tragedy that shocked the LGBTQ community and the entire world.
ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Ariana Grande With such an eclectic group of artists, it seems unfair to decide who's art is better than the rest. However, besides her undeniably unparalleled vocal range, Ariana has shown us that she can also make us laugh, make us cry, make us dance, and move us to give to those in need through her charitable efforts. A great vocalist can change the music charts, but a great artist can change the world.
VIDEO OF THE YEAR DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller – "Wild Thoughts" Kendrick Lamar – "HUMBLE." Bruno Mars – "24K Magic" The Weeknd – "Reminder" Alessia Cara – "Scars To Your Beautiful" While the rest of the nominees flaunt the importance of sex, money and social status in their videos, Alessia is the only contender to use her moment to shine a spotlight on the value of loving yourself – flaws and all – with the help of everyday people just like you and me. In a time when we're being divided by our differences and shamed for being "less than perfect," it's refreshing to see an artist show support for something other than the almighty dollar. 20 WIREMAG.COM #33 2017

MOLTO SOUTH BEACH A NEW ALTERNATIVE WITH FAMILIAR FACES

very vibrant community is driven by the energy of its people. Our South Beach LGBTQ community is no exception. The closure of some of South Beach's popular gay venues in recent years left a void that many of us wished would be filled with new places to get together. Thankfully, some members of our community have filled this void by opening new venues where the gay community can come together and feel at home. First came HĂ´tel Gaythering at 1409 Lincoln Road, now we will have Molto South Beach at 1237 Lincoln Road, just two blocks from the Gaythering.
I sat down with Raymond O, Molto's assistant general manager, and Noel Leon, Molto's entertainment director, to discuss what this new Lincoln Road gay establishment will bring to South Beach. Rafa Carvajal: What is Molto South Beach going to offer the LGBTQ community? Raymond O: A safe space where you can come, be yourself and enjoy music, drinks, food, and the best entertainment.

The South Beach LGBTQ community will soon have another seven-days-a-week gay establishment where residents and tourists alike will enjoy fun music, refreshing cocktails, delicious food, and live entertainment – brought to us by some very familiar, friendly faces many of us have known for years.
RC: When is Molto's soft opening? RO: Friday, August 25, 2017. RC: What should patrons expect for the soft opening? RO: Everything that Molto has to offer – great food, drinks and amazing entertainment. Let's not forget our sexy guys and drag queen bartenders. All familiar South Beach faces. Family. RC: What will your job be at Molto? RO: I will be the assistant general manager. I brought in Noel Leon to be our entertainment director because we have worked together in past and make a great team! RC: What type of entertainment will Molto have? Noel Leon: Molto will always be an experience. We have a great weekly lineup with an industry night, drag shows, DJs, and lots of surprises. RC: Who are some of the entertainers that will be performing at Molto? NL: Our cast is top notch! TLo Ivy, Fernan D'cute, Fantasia Royal Gaga, Missy Meyaki Lapeige, and myself, just to name a few. RC: Describe the types of cocktails and bar specials that you will be offering to your customers. RO: We will be offering a great selection of fresh mixed innovative cocktails and daily happy hour with food and drinks. We offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunches!

RC: What type of food will you be serving at Molto? NL: A fusion between Italian, Turkish and American cuisine.

RC: Highlight three of your appetizers and three of your entrées as a preview of Molto's menu. RO: Three of our yummy appetizers will be meatballs, a hummus platter and tuna carpaccio. Some of our delicious entrées will include pizza, ribeye, and fettuccine Alfredo. RC: Describe the ambiance and vibe you expect to have at Molto for the gay community. RO: A chic bar for our local gays to come and see friendly faces. We need more of that in South Beach! RC: Tell us about Molto's brunch. What will it be like? RO: A prefix menu that includes unlimited entrées and your choice of unlimited mimosas, sangria or champagne. We will have an interactive drag show throughout your seating. RC: Describe the special nights that you plan to have at Molto. NL: Industry night for people in the biz, martini nights, and different drag/DJ nights.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about Molto? RO: We have lost a lot of great gay establishments. South Beach is in need of a new and different space to go be yourself and have a great time. We have been received with open arms by other gay establishments on the beach. United we are stronger for the LGBTQ community.
