MTV'S VIDEO VANGUARD OF THE YEAR:
JENNIFER LOPEZ MTV made the announcement about this year's recipient on July 31, via livestream with the stunned and stunning-as-ever JLo saying, "To be the recipient this year is like… I can't even believe it, I'm so excited." This year's award is extra special because the Puerto Rican pop princess will also be the first Latin artist to receive the honor. "That's always an amazing thing," she explained. "Because you want everybody to know that they have a fair shot at anything in this life. And if I can be the first to do anything, that just… is not about me. It's about everybody else. It's about them." It was nearly two decades ago that the 49-yearold first appeared on the VMAs as a nominee for Best New Artist; and in that time, she has given us some of the most iconic dance songs (and videos) of our generation. Not only has she conquered the music world, she's made a separate career as an actress, a producer and, of course, a mother. Starting out as a Fly Girl on the hit '90s TV show In Living Color, Jennifer Lynn Lopez was just a pretty face dancing in

n just a couple of weeks, the world will be glued to their TVs as our favorite acts take the stage for the 35th installment of the MTV Video Music Awards. Besides featuring the inevitable and highly-anticipated moments of shock-and-awe by nominees and attendees alike, the show will also be honoring Jennifer Lopez as this year's recipient of the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The Video Vanguard made its debut in 1984 at the inaugural VMAs, where it was awarded to David Bowie, The Beatles, and film director Richard Lester. The iconic award recognizes the accomplishments of artists in music and film, and is also given to music video directors who have created some of the most acclaimed music videos aired by the network. In 1991, it was renamed in honor of Michael Jackson, the original video vanguard himself.

That all changed after her first breakout role in the film Selena (1997) for which she received a Golden Globe nomination and became the first Latin actress to earn over $1 million for a film. She went on to star in a string of other films, eventually establishing herself as the highest-paid Latin actress in Hollywood. In 1999, JLo launched her music career and dominated the top of the Billboard charts with her very first single, "If You Had My Love." As her fame grew, her music videos became a culmination of her dancing, acting and singing all rolled into every 3 1/2-minute masterpiece. Despite the critics slashing away at her every move and endless controversy surrounding her love life, she continued to thrive; proving time after time that she was more than just a pretty face. On August 20, that face will be gracing the stage at Radio City Music Hall, where the VMAs will air live from the venue for the 12th time, the most of any previous venue in its history. JLo will perform live before accepting her award and joining the likes of Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Beyoncé, P!nk – all the other incredible women in music who have accepted this award before her. As if that wasn't enough excitement for one night, she's also in the running for two more awards, Best Collaboration and Best Latin Song for her single, "Dinero."

When asked during an interview who she thought should get the award next year, Lopez cast her vote for Missy Elliot or Lady Gaga. Will JLo be adding "psychic" to her resume next? I guess we'll just have to wait till next year to find out. We met Jayson thanks to our friends from Photo Studio Miami. This week, Wire Magazine brings you a Fashion & Style cover story about him and his project to sell these beautiful ponchos in the U.S. to help indigenous people who cannot even get clean water, something most of us take for granted every day. We sat down with Jayson to learn more about him and his stylish one of a kind ponchos. Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live? Jayson Rosero: My parents were both born in Cali, Colombia, but I was born in the U.S. and live in Miami. RC: Tell us about the ponchos you sell, how are they made, and who makes them. JR: They are one of a kind! We like to call them "ponchis." They're each uniquely handmade to fit people who want to wear something traditional, fashion forward, and only for the trendsetters! They're made by indigenous people in South America, by tribes that extend from Peru to Colombia. First, the camels are shaved from Peru, then they distribute them through tribes who stitch them together per unique design, for the most soft quality ponchis. After that, we ship them to the U.S. and distribute them. You can find our stuff on instagram (@USPonchi). We also have a whole new website coming soon. RC: Why do you think these ponchos are so beautiful? JR: They are a true design of vibrance, creativity and culture. If you look closely, you can see things that you would see in everyday life, if you lived in a more rural area. Not only that, but everywhere I wear my ponchi, I get a million questions like "where did you get that?", or "it looks so nice!" People adore them and it makes me stick out from the crowd. Something I always strive to be is different!

RC: Why should Wire Magazine readers buy these ponchos? JR: When you buy one of our ponchis, not only are you going to be kept warm and look beautiful this festival season, you are also helping people who can't even get clean water – or any water as a matter of fact – pay for their water. You're helping them keep their traditions alive and sustain their families. Donations are never enough, but if we can consistently make a fair trade, then all the merrier! RC: How did the idea of selling the ponchos to help native people come about? JR: One day, as I traveled with my girlfriend (the co-founder of Ponchi) in Colombia, we ventured out to the more rural part of town, where we could get in touch with our roots. On the way, I saw much of the "third world" part of the country. I saw dogs with no home, with cancer, people sleeping on the streets begging for money, or making little bags and bracelets trying to sell them to outsiders. Amongst all this, we met one lady who had a couple of ponchos. Immediately, the colors caught my eye and I said, "I want this!" I bought them all and felt so good in doing so because not only was I buying a piece of cloth that I couldn't get anywhere else (meaning no one would have the same garment as me, ha-ha), but I was helping her out. She was so happy that she gave me some free earrings which she made as well. (Spoiler alert!). RC: How do you buy the ponchos? Do you travel and buy them in person? JR: Yes! That's the biggest process. We have to travel very far outside the city, to a place where there's no internet and barely any electricity, to let people know what we need, such as the colors. We then pay them, come back one or two weeks later, pick them up, and then ship them back to the U.S.! No internet here, ha-ha. RC: What do you do besides your business selling ponchos made by native people in South America? JR: I own an Internet marketing agency called Think Expansion, trade forex with my girlfriend, and go to school for pre-med! Life is an adventure and you gotta be all that you can be, in my opinion. I love this process.

RC: Describe yourself in three words. JR: Supreme hustler 5000. RC: Tell us about your experience shooting with Photo Studio Miami, and how it came about. JR: Photo Studio Miami are the best photographers I've worked with. Jorge is truly an artist, and a perfectionist! He makes sure that every shot he gets is immaculate and made me feel so comfortable as a model. He's so professional and fun to work with. It's a funny story how it came about actually. We got in contact through Instagram, and when we found how close we were, we just decided to meet at the studio and we just hit it off. Jorge is so laid back and funny. All of the sudden, I fell in love with modeling again. Something I fell out of love with because of bad experiences with other photographers in the past. RC: Who is your greatest source of inspiration and why? JR: Leonardo da Vinci. He was the ultimate Renaissance man. A doctor, an engineer and artist. If there's anyone that I would like to have lunch with, it would be him! RC: How do you stay in such great shape? JR: I go to the gym six times a week, for at least an hour and a half at a time of just heavy lifting. I'm very meticulous with my meals and with my calories. For me, the gym is like brushing my teeth, so I never skip it. RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photography? JR: The creativity! I love the energy of working with a photographer and their vision. It's cool how I get to take a picture of myself and how I look now, so that I can one day show my grandkids like, "Look here, son. Your grand flappy was powerful." RC: Boxers or briefs? JR: Briefs. Boxers are so uncomfortable. RC: What is your favorite pastime? JR: Reading. I love to read books. RC: Where would you travel if you could go anywhere, and why? JR: I would travel to Brazil because I love the food, the language, the culture, it looks so exotic and it would be such an adventure. RC: What is your current struggle? JR: Fitting time for everything in my day. A struggle that I strive to overcome, ha-ha. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? JR: Go and be whoever you want to be! You don't need an army to be all that you can be.
