PUBLISHER'S CORNER HAPPY SCORE XIX ANNIVERSARY I have been fortunate to see some amazing performances by great stage actors and singers on many theatrical stages. This past Saturday, I saw an outstanding portrayal of Édith Piaf by Venezuelan actress Mariaca Semprún at the Colony Theatre. Mariaca is one of the best stage actresses and singers I have ever seen! She deserved all the standing ovations the audience gave her this past Saturday, and I consider myself very fortunate to have seen Mariaca perform the lead role in Piaf. Édith Piaf was France's beloved national chanteuse and an international star who performed around the globe. This French cabaret singer, songwriter and actress was beloved by many around the world. La Vie en Rose is Piaf's most famous song and Mariaca does a phenomenal job singing it on stage. Piaf is garnering so many accolades that additional performances were added at the Colony Theatre. Go see Piaf it if you can! In this week's issue, we preview Score's big bash on Saturday, August 12 to celebrate its XIX anniversary. Score's fête promises to transport revelers back to the fabulous glam atmosphere of South Beach in the 1990s – paying homage to none other than the legendary Gianni Versace. Score will host a VIP reception for friends & family from 9 p.m. - 12 a.m., featuring the libations of Ultimate Miami bartender winner, Roger Lords. For this special occasion, Aaron Powell is creating a site-specific mural that will enhance the vibe and feel of the party, as well as a photo booth area to make sure you capture the moment with your friends and favorite bartenders. No special anniversary party would be complete without some sick beats, so the evening will feature a variety of sounds. In fact, more than 1,000 revelers are expected to observe the occasion, paying homage to none other than the legendary Gianni Versace! The Score family, Luis Morera and Billy Kemp wish to extend an invitation to join them in the biggest event of the summer season. On Saturday, August 12, 2017, Score will pay tribute to the creator of South Beach '90s glam and everything that defined an era where beauty music and originality was the name of the game. Score will host a VIP reception for friends & family from 9 p.m. - 12 a.m. This year's specialty cocktails will be created by Score bartender and winner of the Ultimate Miami bartender contest: Mr. Roger Lords. Rafa Carvajal: How did you get into DJing? DJ Isaac Escalante: I have always been surrounded by music. I went to music school at 6-years-old. RC: What do you enjoy the most about DJing at LGBTQ events and parties? IE: The energy is totally different and I enjoy playing for a mixed crowd. RC: What are you looking forward to the most about DJing at Score's 19th anniversary party? IE: I know it will be a legendary night. I will be premiering a lot of new tracks, so I'm super excited. RC: What is your favorite DJing music? IE: House and tech house. RC: How does DJing in Miami compare to DJing in other cities? IE: Miami is unique and Score is home to me, so I feel very happy to spend this special night at home. RC: Describe your style of DJing in three words. IE: Energetic, happy and constant. BETH SACKS Rafa Carvajal: How did you become a singer? Beth Sacks: I felt instantly connected to music as a child, always singing as much as possible. I always had an ear for melodies. I remember listening to singers such as Debbie Boone singing the classic "You Light Up My Life," and immediately realizing I could make the same belting sounds with my voice. It's a feeling that becomes a part of you when singing, almost like an incredible energy from within. Other big influences were the one and only Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor. I would sit in my room for hours and belt out "Hot Stuff," "Last Dance" and of course "I Will Survive." RC: What do you enjoy the most about singing at LGBTQ events and parties? BS: For me, I have witnessed close friends of mine struggle with being able to be openly gay and I enjoy the unity of bringing people together through music no matter who you are, or where you come from. Music has always had the power to bring people together and just celebrate our diversity as human beings. RC: What kind of songs are you going to sing at Score's 19th anniversary party? BS: I will sing a few of the hit remixes DJ Aron and I produced together that have become dance floor anthems at all of the circuit parties around the world, as well as a brand new song not released yet! RC: What are you looking forward to the most about singing at Score's 19th anniversary party? BS: I love Miami and the people; the energy is like no other. The team at Score has some of my favorite people who know how to throw an incredible party and just have a good time! It will be an honor for me to perform for their 19th anniversary! It is going to be an incredible celebration! RC: How would you describe your style of music? BS: My style of music comes from my incredible music partner's vision and producer DJ Aron. I would describe our music as house/progressive house. RC: Describe yourself as a singer in four words. BS: Big voice, heart and soul! RC: Tell us something about yourself that Wire Magazine readers would be surprised to know. BS: I originally come from a theatrical/Broadway musical background. I moved to NYC to attend musical theater school and toured with a lot of national and international Broadway productions. One of my favorites is Phantom of the Opera, which I toured with throughout Europe for

several years! I also have opera training and was studying classically with a teacher from the Metropolitan Opera House who tried relentlessly to push me toward an opera career. I started following Peter Rauhofer and Junior Vasquez. I was hooked and knew I wanted to be a house singing diva. I would finally meet and work with top international circuit DJ/producer Aron. I met him while singing out loud five years ago at a NYC pride pool party. He heard me and asked if I was available to record a song for this huge club in Brazil. We continued to work on many originals over the years and within the last year, came to remix the classics of Abba's Voulez-Vous, and 4 Non Blondes' "What's Up," not knowing they would take off as they did, and the rest is history! RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? BS: Yes! I'm very excited for the release of our new song "Body To Body" by MING and DJ Aron, and many other new projects in the works! DJ YAZZ BURRELL Rafa Carvajal: How did you get into DJing? DJ Yazz Burrell: I have always had a huge passion for music. It was in Cuba, where I am originally from, where I started getting into the DJing. At first I started being the person in charge of the music selection and then I was able to purchase some equipment, and that is when it all began. It was not until I arrived in the U.S. that I was able to do it professionally. RC: What do you enjoy the most about DJing at LGBTQ events and parties? YB: The energy! I am all about the energy and hype, which is characteristic of my style. Seeing all those bodies on the dance floor stomping to the beats just gets me going. RC: What are you looking forward to the most about DJing at Score's 19th anniversary party? YB: I am looking forward to seeing familiar and new faces and celebrating among legendary individuals from the community the achievements of this iconic venue. I am sure that no one is going to want to miss a bit of this celebration.

RC: What is your favorite DJing music? YB: Definitely house music. It is what drives and feeds my passion for this art. I also just started producing recently and I am very excited to be introducing some original tracks to my repertoire. RC: Tell us about the music in the set you're getting ready for Score's 19th anniversary party. YB: It will definitely set the tone for the rest of the night. There is a mix of everything for everyone, but I will be sure to sneak in a small preview of my original tracks.

RC: How does DJing in Miami compare to DJing in other cities? YB: Miami is home. When you are home, you know the vibe, the people and the hearts beat to one same sound. It is definitely a zone of comfort that allows me to take risks with a lot of things. Other cities, you get to learn, experience, and live the crowd... it is surely a rush to stand in front any crowd and see them jump to your set. RC: Describe your style of DJing in three words. YB: Energetic, unique and Miami. RC: Tell us something about yourself that Wire Magazine readers would be surprised to know. YB: I am one of the owners of VIZION L.E.D. Events, a company dedicated to sound, audiovisual, lighting, staging, special effects and production. Some of our designs and set-ups are enjoyed by many of you at local festivals and events. DJ HANSELL LEYVA Rafa Carvajal: How did you get into DJing? DJ Hansell Leyva: My father was a musician growing up and he took me to all his performances. Sitting first row, watching him on stage and seeing the reaction of so many people coming together sparked a fire in me like nothing else. I decided to buy some small DJ equipment and started to play around with it at home for a couple years as a hobby. Three years later, a really good friend of mine was the manager at the hottest gay club in downtown Miami and he gave me my first break. His name is Raul and I am always going to be beyond grateful to him. I couldn't believe what I was feeling; it brought me back to when I was a kid watching my dad's performances. RC: What do you enjoy the most about DJing at LGBTQ events and parties? HL: I'm proud to be who I am and nothing makes me happier and fulfilled than to be a circuit DJ in the LGBTQ scene. RC: What are you looking forward to the most about DJing at Score's 19th anniversary party? HL: Score is home to me, nothing makes me happier than seeing a packed house. RC: What is your favorite DJing music? HL: My favorite DJing music is a combination of circuit with tribal tech house. might be from Boca, but my music is really inspired by Miami," says Kendra Erika. Her latest dance single, "Under My Skin," co-written with Grammy Award winning producer Damon Sharpe, is currently No. 12 on the Billboard Club chart. She'll perform it live August 19 at The Manor in Fort Lauderdale.

She steers clear from anything that is hyper sexualized or self-degrading. "I'm not interested in providing a distraction that is disguised as an escape." "Under My Skin" is the follow-up to "Oasis", Kendra Erika's previous hit that reached No. 9 on the Billboard Dance Charts in March. It's a playful song with a 'let's see if we get caught' theme that it borrows from the Cole Porter song made popular by Frank Sinatra, "I've Got You Under My Skin." "When we were writing it, I was thinking how the youth of today are not much different from those of 75 years ago, when the original was written," Kendra explains. "We still feel invincible when it comes to love and life and if you think about it, there's beauty in the fact that we're still discovering who we are and where we stand. Everyone can relate because we're all young and stupid at some point in our lives." We spoke with Kendra Erika from her Boca Raton home. Kevin Cranston: Are you a Miami party girl? Kendra Erika: I love a good dance club every now and then but usually, when I'm home, I prefer Miami's lounge clubs. They're more intimate. 22 WIREMAG.COM #32 2017

KC: Would you say Miami's nightlife has changed in the last few years? KE: Like every major city, Miami has gone through its own evolution. Still, Miami is and always has been the place to escape and have your body transported by a good dance beat. Where New York and Los Angeles are more about culture and creativity, Miami has got more of a vacation vibe. KC: As a local girl, do you venture to Fort Lauderdale? KE: Sure, I'll go to places like Vibe and Stache, but you know, something I've noticed is that Fort Lauderdale is gradually becoming more of a restaurant/cocktail/craft scene. I mean, there is still some good nightlife, but the food, drink and dining is where it's at.

KC: Are your shows as cinematic as your music videos? KE: For me, I really want the music and message to be the focus. I saw Lana Del Rey perform in West Palm Beach recently and it was the music that brought people to tears and to emotional reflection. She did not have one outfit change the entire time, which I found to be amazing. But, she's a very poetic and cinematic writer, and she doesn't need to have the glittering bells and whistles carrying her. The same goes for Ellie Goulding. Although Ellie did have dancers, and some on screen visuals at her show, she didn't let the material matter overtake her message. She was also very humble and interacted with the audience like we were all hanging out and enjoying the moment. There was nothing idol-like in what she portrayed on stage. KC: Is that how you hope to connect with your fans? KE: Yes. When an artist stays authentic to his or her journey and message, they can create something people enjoy. True artists don't need to sell out to make people like them. Being yourself these days is a brave thing to do, and I truly respect artists that achieve it. That's what I hope to bring to my show.

KC: Will this be your first time performing Fort Lauderdale? KE: I sang the National Anthem for a fighting event once and I remember looking around, saying to myself, I would love to perform my dance tracks here one day. It's funny how life works like that. I'm excited to perform at The Manor! KC: The Manor is a bi-level space with chandeliers and a huge dance floorâ€Ś kinda similar to the Miami clubs of yesteryear. KE: I've been performing a lot of mega clubs lately and I love them because the crowds let off this tidal wave of energy that is just so infectious and adds so much to the show. KC: With it's sweeping build-ups and hard drops, "Under My Skin" seems made for the big room. KE: I agree! When Damon (Sharpe) and I were in the studio, we knew we wanted to produce another strong dance track like "Oasis." But while "Oasis" is a more poolside, big lounge sound, we were looking for something bigger for this track. KC: What inspired "Under My Skin"? KE: The way we usually write songs is by going through whatever potential melodies we have. After that, we start laying down all lyrics that come to mind. With "Under My Skin," Damon had the idea for a summer wind concept, which reminded me of Sinatra. I liked it, but in my mind, the whole summer wind concept hit too close to home with "Oasis." I suggested we consider another Sinatra song, "I've Got You Under My Skin," as inspiration. That's how "Under My Skin" was born! KC: Mixin Marc, best known his work with The Chainsmokers, Demi Lovato and Katy Perry, remixed "Under My Skin." Will you be performing his version at Manor? KE: I might! I'm not sure yet. Mixin Marc has been so supportive of my career and all of his mixes, especially the one for "Under My Skin," hold such allure and zeal. I really want to make this performance one that people remember. Strong dance moves and lyrical interaction always carry my shows. I also prefer that the stage not be some hierarchal obstacle. I try to welcome the crowd into the experience.
