PUBLISHER'S CORNER A CALL TO PUT POLICE OFFICERS ON THE BEAT NOW! I was recently engaged in a discussion on social media where a Miami Beach resident pointed out seeing the visible presence of police officers walking the streets in Palm Beach. Someone responded saying that you cannot compare Miami Beach to Palm Beach because it is a very wealthy community that can afford police officers patrolling on foot since their rich residents pay a lot in taxes. I found that comment so detached from reality that I responded: "Yes, you can't compare Miami Beach with Palm Beach, New York City or so many other major cities because ALL of them have a visible presence of police officers walking the beat and Miami Beach DOES NOT. Simple fact we can see with our own eyes every day." Miami Beach collects millions of dollars in resort taxes, business taxes, real estates taxes, very high parking fees, and several other sources of revenue. It's how the City chooses to invest those dollars to protect its residents and tourists and provide them a good quality of life that matters. Remember the poorly explained and unjustified large hike in street parking rates the City implemented in 2015 (wiremag.co/issue43_2015)? Did you also notice the recent doubling of parking rates in the main City parking garages on Lincoln Road and other locations? Yet no new City parking garages have been constructed to alleviate the chronic parking problem in Miami Beach affecting residents, mainland visitors and tourists – who would like to visit the Beach and spend money going out or shopping without having to drive around for long periods of time or being gouged with high parking rates? Where did all the additional parking fees revenue go? Why hasn't it been spent on additional parking garages? Just last Friday, I saw a private parking garage on Collins Avenue near 10th street charging $50 to park. That is brazen price gouging! Just as outrageous is the lack of police officers walking the beat on a regular basis to prevent and address crime, while we readily encounter drug pushers offering us drugs all the time on Ocean Drive or Washington Avenue, or witness other painfully obvious criminal offenses that affect both the quality of life and the security of residents and tourists, and make us worry about our safety when walking around, especially at night. Some will use the silly justification that tourists will be put off by seeing police officers patrolling on foot and think that Miami Beach is unsafe. That is as dumb as suggesting that we should take away all the lifeguards on the beach because seeing them makes tourists think the ocean in Miami Beach is too dangerous and will cause tourists to vacation in other beach destinations. It is time for Miami Beach politicians and City officials to address street crime and drug pushing with cops on the beat and community policing on a regular basis, including with prompt response tools such as Segways and scooters. Countless cities around the world do it because it works, and so should Miami Beach!

IN THE TREEHOUSE WITH SOFI TUKKER

ophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern have been very busy these last couple of years. Ever since they unleashed their colossal debut single "Drinkee" in 2016, their innovative sound and fearless style have taken them on a very intoxicating ride. They've already been tapped for a Grammy, toured the world, left a trail of infectiously quirky dance hits in their wake, and just released their first full-length album, Treehouse. Unlike your typical dance collection that puts thumping beats and laser-like sound effects front-and-center, the pair known as Sofi Tukker take a very different approach to their version of dance pop by incorporating Brazilian poetry, organic instrumentation and even some electric guitar played by the female half of the team. While Sofi provides vocals on most of the songs, their newest single "Batshit," features a smoldering Tukker on the mic narrating the questionable choices of an obsessed lover. Yeah, we've all been there.

DJ FR8-O: Congratulations on the new album and the tour! How did this journey begin for you two? Tukker: We met during our senior year at Brown University when we were both asked to perform at an art gallery. I was the after-party DJ and she was an acoustic Bossa Nova performer in a little jazz trio. I went a little early and saw her play and thought it was great, but a bit boring. So, I thought it would be fun if we "dance-a-fied" it a bit, and we've been working together ever since. DJF: And what parts do each of you play? T: We both kinda do everything. I'm the one sitting at the computer and she's the one mostly singing and playing guitar and stuff, but we both really love to produce and write everything.

DJF: How are you guys adjusting to all this new attention you've been getting? Sofi: It's definitely different than when we started. We're just so in the thick of writing and performing and doing all those things though. Definitely the opportunities we get are bigger and we get to play for more people, but we're still doing the same things, and our goal is that we just keep that same spirit alive. We just love what we're doing and hope that we continue creating with that spirit. DJF: Let's talk about the title of your new album. Why Treehouse? S: It's just about that spirit of childhood play that happens in a treehouse where you're free to create anything with your friends, and it's just this place in nature where you can make things and play and go wild and be yourself and everyone's excited. That kind of attitude is what's been really important to us, both in making music, performing it and bringing people into it.

DJF: Going into the studio, did you have a concept of what you wanted your debut album to sound like or what message you wanted to put out there? T: We didn't really go into a studio. We've been touring and have basically been on the road constantly. So, we're just always making stuff when we have time. We make stuff on the bus, we make stuff in the hotel room, and when it came to a point where we had this group of songs that felt like a cohesive unit we were like, "Let's make this an album!"

DJF: Do you feel like you've had to up your stage game since your last tour? T: Yeah, this is our first tour with a really big production. So we got to build this fantasy jungle, sort of glow-in-the-dark rainforest on stage with us. It's pretty exciting! It really does make the show a little more special and a little more wild. So it's fun!

DJF: You've already worked with some amazing talent, like Nervo and The Knocks. Who else is on your collaboration wish list right now? S: Our collaborations usually happen from just having fun with friends. That's what happened on "Awoo" with our friend Betta Lemme, and now on our new record we have a song with one of our best friends, Charlie Barker. It just happens when we are all hanging out. We are always writing, while on the road and visiting different places, so collaborations sometimes spring up organically. We have a couple of tracks coming DJF: Many of your tracks have a Brazilian slant that happened as collaborations on the tour bus. to them or are sung in Portuguese. Are you Brazilian, Sofi? DJF: Other than the tour, what other projects are you or will you be working on? S: I am not, I was born in Germany. But, I grew S: We are always working on new music and we have a bunch new music videos up all around the world and have a special love ready to go! We also have a record label/collective in the works called Animal Talk for Portuguese. I just think it sounds beautiful. I sat down with Dante to learn more about his background, career and pastimes. Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live? Dante Saverio Amato: I am originally from a small town called Molfetta off the Mediterranean coast of Italy, but I was born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey. RC: Describe yourself in three words. DSA: Strong, compassionate and loyal. RC: What do you do for a living? DSA: I am an artist. I love creating things from scratch, whether it be music, movies, or cuisine. These are the things that I am passionate about. RC: Who is the professional icon that inspires you most, and why? DSA: Jim Carrey because he has allowed me to break out of my shell, which society has encased and conformed to be considered as "normal." RC: How do you stay in such great shape? DSA: I stay in such great shape because I enjoy taking care of my body, hair, skin, nails, and â€“ can't forget â€“ the gym, of course! RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photography? DSA: I like being able to capture an image in time that can never exactly be recreated. RC: Boxers or briefs? DSA: Briefs, definitely.

It never gets old. RC: Where would you travel if you could go anywhere, and why? DSA: I've traveled, but I have yet to go to the Maldives. One day! RC: What is your current struggle? DSA: My current struggle would be that I haven't met the right individuals to share my vision with. I'm still looking for that foot in the door. RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? DSA: Yes, I want to share my goal. I want to change how the world views me. It isn't about the fame, that isn't what makes anyone happy. It's about being so completely myself that it impacts everyone around me to be comfortable enough to be themselves too. thicker ones might require some peeling if too stalky. You'll have to determine what degree of crisp you prefer. As far as green and white... I read conflicting opinions. I think it is aesthetic, myself. I don't notice any substantive other difference. Pureed white make a beautiful soup, but both make delicious soup. When buying asparagus, check out their thorny crowns for freshness to choose the best. Revel in seasonal, domestic varieties but if you crave out of season, South American aren't bad at all. As for preparation, it is simple to keep it easy. Heat an oven to 400 degrees, snap asparagus at natural breaking point. Reserve the rough stalks for your own veggie broth (a big money saver over time). Toss the tender tips with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper, and Parmesan cheese. Roll out on foil covered baking tray and pop in the oven for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on at the end and this is one of the times the size of the veggies will matter. You want some browning on the outside but also an al dente crisp. If you prefer more tender, use the same approach at 350 degrees and another 5-7 minutes. But don't be afraid of a little texture. Without it, you might as well be microwaving a canned product.

There aren't any herbs that particularly pair well with asparagus. Lemon does. It stands up to heavy, savory meats, or tones down as perfect accompaniment to salmon or gentler fish. Crab is a classic pairing. Plenty of people like bacon with asparagus, but I feel the same as I do about bacon and Brussels sprouts – too heavy. Good asparagus are more than one of an elegant side. They can be a featured ingredient in a fairly simple memorable entrée for breakfast, lunch, brunch or dinner.

Other ideas. Smaller asparagus in particular are great either simply stir fried by themselves, or as a component in a more elaborate stir fry, such as with shrimp. Some people only think asparagus and Western cuisine. But they are a wonderful part of Asian tastes as well. Probably most still think of steamed asparagus, which I love then done perfect, but if just over-cooked... not so much. Marinated grilled asparagus are a delight – but use mid-size or better to make it easier to monitor the doneness.

ASPARAGUS AND MUSHROOM TOAST: • 2 eggs, poached • 2 slices good whole grain bread, preferably thick, toasted • 1 cup good mushrooms... Portabella or my favorite, chanterelles • ½ LB grilled, steamed or baked asparagus • 1 clove garlic, minced • splash of lemon juice Sauté mushrooms in butter with garlic, salt and pepper. Finish with lemon juice when you take off heat. Poach two eggs either traditionally or – if that is intimidating – use one of a number of inexpensive microwave gadgets to make a comparable poached or soft boiled egg; alternately you can use fried eggs. Remember that a runny yolk is essential to the dish. Arrange good toast on plate and crisscross with cooked asparagus. Add a dollop of completed mushrooms on top of each slice of toast. Finally, add the egg, breaking yolk just as you serve. A little black pepper and maybe another couple of lemon juice drops and you have one of my favorite dishes featuring one of my favorite ingredients! Author/writer Michael W.
