12TH EDITION OF THE OUTSHINE LGBTQ+ FILM FESTIVAL FORT LAUDERDALE The 12th edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale will take place in virtual format and showcase 21 worldclass contemplative, comedic and creative films from 11 countries, with all of the films being made available to viewers throughout the state of Florida from December 3-6, 2020. This edition will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q&A sessions to virtually unite our community and inspire, entertain, and educate. According to OUTshine executive director Victor Gimenez, "This year’s Fort Lauderdale edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival will follow in the footsteps of our successful Miami virtual edition which simultaneously opened-up the dialogue for equality in film throughout the state of Florida, for the first time.” The Festival will also feature the OUTshine Drive-OUT film Cowboys, on Thursday, December 4, at 7 p.m. at Pier 66 Marina, 2150 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale. This critically acclaimed drama was awarded “Outstanding Performance in a U.S. Feature” at Outfest LGBT Film Festival and “Best Screenplay” at the TriBeCa Film Festival. Another Festival highlight is the 10th anniversary screening of BearCity on Saturday, December 5 at 7 p.m. This film is an outrageous, hilarious and authentic touching portrait of a group of friends trying to get by via laughing, loving and sex-ing in New York City. BEARCITY
Director: Doug Langway. U.S., 2010 Take the girls from Sex and the City and inject them with large amounts of testosterone and tape fur coats to their bodies and you have something almost as great as BearCity. In this awardwinning romantic comedy viewers are given an insider pass to a burly, tight-knit group of New York City friends who are trying to make it through life’s twisted paths and love’s absurdities without getting lost. When twinkie newbie and closet bear chaser Tyler joins the gang, he has no idea the impact his new friends will have on his life. As in any good romantic comedy, our hot young lead needs a love interest. Insert Roger, the hot Casanova of muscle bears. The film oozes with sexual tension, spills over with comic relief and is also full of heart. BearCity is a prime cut of movie-beef.
COWBOYS
Director: Anna Kerrigan. U.S., 2020 Steve Zahn (Treme’, Modern Family, Dallas Buyers Club) stars as Troy, a troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife, Sally. GOODBYE MOTHER
Director: Trinh Dinh Le Minh. Vietnam, 2019 Van, the heir of a Vietnamese clan, returns home from the U.S. for the first time in nine years to relocate his father's tomb. His family is surprised when he brings a young Vietnamese-American named Ian along. No one knows that Ian is Van's boyfriend, and Van is planning to come out to his widowed mother, who expects him to get married and have kids to fulfill his duty as an heir. Complicating the homecoming is Van’s grandmother, who has dementia and mistakes Ian for her grandson. While struggling to find the perfect occasion to come out, Van learns that his mother is seriously ill. GOSSAMER FOLDS
Director: Lisa Donato. U.S., 2019 Gossamer Folds is a heartfelt tale of big dreams and unlikely friendships in 1986 suburban Missouri. Bored with his new home and looking for an escape from his parents’ constant arguments, vocabulary-obsessed nine year old Tate Millikin sparks a strong bond with two of his neighbors: a Black trans woman named Gossamer and her retired English professor father, Edward. Tate finds in them what he desperately lacks from his parents: guidance, care, and respect… not to mention being introduced to all sorts of new words. But as threats to separate the group begin to mount, all while Gossamer entertains the idea of following her dreams to New York to become a fashion designer, Tate must accept the possibility of losing the first meaningful friendships he’s ever had.
SUMMER OF ’85
Director: François Ozon. France, 2020 Over one hot summer in 1985, naive teenager Alexis falls deeply and dangerously in love with sexy David. The pair become inseparable on the beaches and dancefloors of sun-soaked Normandy. But devilish and spikey David sees himself as a free spirit and refuses to be tied down. Unabashedly queer, hotblooded and hormone-driven, this is a welcome return to the preoccupations of director Francois Ozon’s early career. Featuring superb 80’s styling and music from Rod Stewart, Bananarama and The Cure, Summer of ’85 is a breezy first-love flashback to more innocent times. Ozon’s latest recalls life not just before COVID-19 but, more importantly, before AIDS overshadowed what it meant to come out.
THE OBITUARY OF TUNDE JOHNSON Director: Ali LeRoi. U.S., 2019
Tunde Johnson is a smart, well-to-do Nigerian-American teen who is finally ready to come out to his supportive parents. His secret hunky boyfriend Soren is not ready. Over the course of a seemingly normal day, Tunde hangs out with friends, goes to his film class, and meets up with Soren for a clandestine rendezvous. But this normal day is cut tragically short when Tunde is shot during a racially charged encounter with cops. Then Tunde wakes up, unaware that his day is on constant repeat. Tunde starts making minor changes each day that subtly affect the way his day unfolds, though the day’s tragic ending remains a constant, and he becomes trapped in a bizarre time loop that has him experiencing a horrific death by the police over and over again. The “Groundhog Dayesque” structure of this film deconstructs the everyday threats of racism, homophobia and police brutality, all too prevalent in American society. #14 2020 WIREMAG.COM 11

Rafa Carvajal: Where are you originally from and where do you live? John Wallace: I’m originally from Houston, Texas, and I live in Miami. I’m a country boy at heart, but a city boy in my soul. RC: What do you do for work? JW: Many things. I’m a general contractor, male entertainer, entrepreneur, model, actor, and social media influencer. RC: How do you stay in such great physical shape? JW: The key secret is staying motivated. That’s the hard part. The easy part is staying in the gym daily, and eating as healthy as possible. Good genetics also helped me a lot! RC: What are the top three exercises that help your body the most? JW: Believe it or not, basic exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, and shoulder press keep my upper body proportionate and stacked. Luckily, I’m blessed with good legs. #14 2020 WIREMAG.COM 15
RC: What is your biggest dream you have yet to achieve? JW: To be the main role in a new box office movie. It will happen very soon. I feel it! RC: How has the current COVID-19 pandemic affected your personal and professional life? JW: It’s been rough. I lost a $70,000 project my company was doing due to COVID-19. I lost a lot of money, and also a lot of weight. I am down fifty pounds since February. But as far as my personal life, I’ve still kept in touch with friends and family, and everyone is doing okay.
RC: Describe yourself in 3 words. JW: Smart, outgoing, ambitious. RC: What is your favorite food? JW: Chicken tenders and fries with honey mustard and BBQ sauce, and Trolli gummy worms. RC: Who is the person that inspires you the most? Why? JW: My biggest inspirations change a lot, but right now my biggest inspiration, since I am focusing on my acting career, is Idris Elba. The man does it all, and he is my favorite actor ever! RC: What is your favorite pastime? JW: Playing video games. This is also my favorite present time. RC: What do you enjoy the most about modeling for photography? JW: The part I enjoy most is shooting in so many different places, with so many new people, and working with so many different brands. Plus there is nothing like waking up to an email saying you landed another cover!
RC: What is your favorite vacation destination? Why? JW: I’ve always wanted to go to Costa Rica, because I’m dying to zipline across the jungle canyons. RC: What is your current struggle? JW: My current struggle is staying on track in all aspects of my professional careers. I recently hired an amazing assistant named Cristian, who is doing a great job keeping me on track.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? JW: 2020 has been an amazing roller coaster for me and everyone else. Overall, I would like to say that 2020 has been a great year for me personally, because I got back into the modeling and acting game, after a five year hiatus. I got my body back, and in better shape than I was the first time I was on a Wire Magazine cover! This year alone, I’ve done 22 photo shoots since July. I just starred in the new Ty Dolla $ign music video Nothing Like Your Exes on YouTube, and I’m working on a new 2021 calendar that will be available for purchase very soon through my Instagram! Thank you for this amazing opportunity. Le Jardinier, located on the ground level of the Miami Design District’s Paradise Plaza at 151 NE 41st Street, Suite 135, is an ideal destination for both residents and tourists in Miami to enjoy a delicious lunch in all weather at its spacious patio, which was recently expanded to sit up to 64 guests at socially distant tables. This mouthwatering vegetable-forward concept by Michelin-starred Chef Alain Verzeroli offers lunch Tuesday through Saturday 12-3 p.m., and includes your choice of either an à la carte menu or a threecourse prix-fixe menu, based on local and seasonal ingredients elevated by classic French technique. THE LAST VERMEER
Just when you think every interesting story about WWII has been told and retold, along comes another, and this one is as compelling as any that came before. The Last Vemeer, based on the novel The Man Who Made Vermeers by Jonathan Lopez, is a tale of mystery, of art fraud, and the weeding out of Nazi collaboration at the end of the war. It’s also a gripping courtroom drama with twist after twist, and a totally unexpected ending. On top of that, it’s an absolutely true story. I like how these sorts of tales get discovered and exposed. It adds to our world knowledge, educates us on how truly ingenious and creative some criminals can be, and displays how even the best of us can be taken for a ride. Unlike most war movies that rely on the use of battle scenes or flashbacks of gruesome images to relate the gravity of their story, this film utilizes only two individual scenes of execution to get the seriousness of the narrative across, and it is striking in the way those images will stick with you. For that matter, I found myself thinking about this film, long after I’d seen it.

Here’s the storyline… The film begins in Amsterdam three weeks after the fall of Hitler, when Nazi collaborators are being exposed, adjudicated and executed in public view by firing squad. A railroad car belonging to Hermann Göring is discovered hidden in a salt mine. Among the stolen treasures found inside is a painting by renowned artist Johannes Vermeer called Christ and the Adulteress that was sold to him for the enormous sum of 1.6 million gelders.
The Allied provisional government wants to know, “Who sold it to him?” and “Where did that person get it?” These are crimes punishable by death. Joseph Piller (Bang), a Dutch Jew who had been working with the Resistance, is assigned the task of identifying and redistributing stolen art. His hunt regarding the Vermeer painting leads him to the flamboyant painter Han van Meegeren (Pearce), who is being accused of collaborating and selling stolen artwork to highranking Nazis. However, the further into the case Piller gets, even with mounting evidence, the more he becomes convinced that van Meegeren is innocent, and he soon finds himself drawn into the uncomfortable position of fighting to save the man’s life. Director Dan Friedkin creates a beautifully sumptuous recreation of the period, and fills the screen with the waterways and small streets that make Amsterdam the charming city it is. He manages to tell his tale with a strange knowledge of the times never letting his direction overwhelm the story. However, it’s Guy Pearce who steals the show with one of the greatest performances of his career. He creates a character whose eccentricities and ornately groomed eyebrows, which are unforgettable, suggest a state of permanent surprise and unquestionable superiority. He almost eclipses the main performance of Claes Bang, who was brilliant in the film The Square. My take… The Last Vermeer is well worth your viewing time. It’s a little slow getting started, but once it gets going, it’s one surprise after another.
