The parties will include entertainment by JackieO' Mykonos drag queens Priscilla and Athena Dion, and DJs Sella and Christos Riganas. I sat down with producer Duni Bauta, Priscilla, and Athena Dion to preview this exciting weekend.
RC: Tell our readers about yourself. DB: I'm a Miami based luxury tour operator turned into the public relations and guest relations manager for the iconic JackieO' Mykonos Beach Club & Bar. I've been working for them for the last couple of years, and I couldn't be more proud of it. RC: Who are you partnering with for the parties? DB: As soon as I mentioned this idea to TWIST, another iconic institution in the nightlife and entertainment industry of South Florida, they said yes, and that was the beginning of all of this. Both the owners of JackieO' Mykonos and TWIST joined forces to present a taste of Mykonos to Miami. Taking into consideration that both TWIST and JackieO' Mykonos have a lot in common – they had never charged for a cover and are open for everybody regardless of sexual 8 WIREMAG.COM #1 2020
orientation, age, ethnicity or religious beliefs. I've worked for both places and they take pride in being spaces that embrace freedom and encourage people to be who they are no matter what. RC: What are the events and parties taking place? DB: We are having events at several great venues. "The JackieO' Mykonos Queens Kickoff Opening Night” on Friday, January 17 at 5:30 p.m. is going to be a Greek family-style show dinner at R House in Wynwood ($65 per person). JackieO' Mykonos drag queens Athena and Priscilla, who's coming all the way from Mykonos, will entertain the attendees with summer hits, as they savor Greek-inspired tapas by renowned Chef Rocco Carulli. From R House, we are all going to TWIST for "Mykonos After Dark" at 11 p.m. with our blue carpet entrance and welcome drinks by Kleos, the Mastiha spirit – a licorice spirit that we sip after meals. Mastiha is now distributed in the U.S. by Kleos, and they are taking this liquor to a new dimension by making cocktails with it. We will dance the night away with DJ Sella, one of our JackieO' Mykonos resident DJs. On Saturday, we have our fabulous "JackieO' Mykonos Pool Party," 1-7 p.m., at the Bentley Beach Club located in the Hilton Hotel, South of 5th Street in Miami Beach. Santorini by Georgios Restaurant will host our amazing JackieO' Mykonos resident DJ Christos Riganas, and we will be there celebrating life and friendship until 7 p.m., including performances by Priscilla and a fire acrobat.

As you may know, I am Greek, so the fact that we are having a Greek-Mykonos themed party weekend in my hometown is so exciting! From the first time I went to Mykonos, I fell in love with the spirit of the island and especially JackieO' Mykonos. RC: Tell our readers about your drag persona, for those who have not met you yet. P: I'm an Italian drag queen. My stage name is from the movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It was while I was watching this movie that I got the inspiration to become a drag queen! RC: Why do you think Mykonos is so popular with American gay tourists? AD: Mykonos represents freedom. Freedom of expression, freedom to be whoever you are, and freedom to enjoy yourself however you want. Michael Bustamante: Describe Disney's Aladdin for those who have never seen the Broadway show or film. Jonah Ho'okano: Aladdin is a 1992 animated masterpiece of the early Disney renaissance era – now adapted into a beautiful stage spectacular. It is a hilarious, romantic, heartfelt adventure sure to delight the entire family. MB: How do you relate to the role of Aladdin? JH: I identify with Aladdin as a character because of these two things: 1) he is an innately good person, and 2) Aladdin doesn't believe that he is "good enough." Now, saying that Aladdin is a "good person" doesn't mean he's perfect. It just means that he's naturally inclined to do the right thing... and when he doesn't, his conscience will remind him. Secondly, Aladdin is constantly doubting himself. He does his best to be consistently kind, charming, and quick-witted, but he struggles with a pretty big case of imposter syndrome. A large part of his journey is sparked by the constant desire to honor his late mother's memory and make something more of himself. He sings "I'll do my best, what else can I do? Since I wasn't born perfect like dad or you... mom, I will try to, try hard to make you proud of your boy." Aladdin constantly strives to be a greater, more successful person and forgets what really makes him a "diamond in the rough," and that deeply resonates with me. MB: What is the principal message of the show? JH: Well, there are a couple. Aladdin's struggle to accept that he's good enough, Jasmine's message that girls and women are strong and capable of leading just as much as anyone else (and the idea that just because something is tradition doesn't make it right), the message that honesty can be both difficult and rewarding, Genie and Aladdin's overarching message of the power of friendship... and the list goes on and on. All of these themes weave together the fabric of the show and it would be wrong of me to pick just one.
MB: Why is Aladdin a must-see show? JH: I could say you're gonna get all the glitzy, glamour with gorgeous crystal beaded costumes and stunning sets, scenery, and effects. I could say you're gonna get all the comedy of a stand-up special and all the romance of a Nicholas Sparks film – and that's all true... but for me, it boils down to this. Most of us grew up with this story, we loved it, we sang the songs, we dressed up as these characters for Halloween (at least I definitely did), and there's a level of beloved nostalgia that's undeniable. Disney takes that and brings it to life in breathtaking fashion. If you want to see actual magic, here it is. MB: What's your favorite song from the show, and why? JH: "A Whole New World," hands down, no question. A lot of people ask if I ever get tired of doing the show over and over again, and the answer is yes and no. Of course, I have days where my voice is a little tired from the two-show day before and jumping off of buildings in "One Jump" doesn't sound that fun to me on that particular day... but if you asked me if I ever get tired of flying on that magic carpet and singing that gorgeous, iconic song, I'll look you in the eyes with the biggest smile on my face and say, "never. Not even a little bit."

MB: What do you enjoy the most about your work? JH: I'm in the business of telling stories. The goal is to touch hearts, touch minds, make people think and feel things... but at the end of the day, my job is to make magic and create happiness. There's not a thing in this world that I'd rather be doing.
MB: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? JH: If you have a passion for the arts and you want to do theatre, do theatre. I grew up in Hawaii miles and miles away from New York City. We didn't have a lot of money and I wasn't able to fly to the big cities and see the shows. I auditioned, got in, and received scholarships for an art school in Seattle and still couldn't afford to go. If you want to be a performer and you don't know where to start, audition for everything. If your school, your church, your local community theatre is putting on a show, go in and audition. If you don't get in, go and watch it. Go watch every bootleg and every clip you can find on YouTube, listen to every cast album on Spotify or iTunes over and over again until you find your taste and your style and what resonates with you. Don't let money or not knowing where to start stop you. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Do theatre unashamed, unembarrassed, and willing to learn. You're gonna learn some of your most valuable lessons hands-on.

hen does a film stop being entertainment and start becoming political manipulation? That's the question running around in my head after seeing Clint Eastwood's new film Richard Jewell. There's no doubt that Mr. Eastwood is a skilled director. There is a vast library of fine films to prove it. However, this film feels quickly made, rushed to market, and purposefully biased. I question his motives for making this film. Why did he choose to tell this particular story at this particular time? Could his own political leanings have played a big part in his choice to exploit Richard Jewell's story? It feels to me like an attempt to ferment further distrust in the FBI and the media at a moment when our country is in political turmoil.

a large pipe bomb. His quick thinking and help clearing the area saved many lives as the bomb went off. However, within days of being hailed as a hero, Richard becomes the FBI's number one suspect, not because of any proof, but because he fits the profile of a "Lone Bomber." In an instant, his life is ripped apart when Atlanta JournalConstitution reporter Kathy Scruggs (Wilde), acting on a tip from her lover, FBI agent Tom Shaw (Hamm), breaks the story that Jewell is under suspicion. Jewell then reaches out to attorney Watson Bryant (Rockwell) who tries dramatically to prove his client is innocent while struggling to keep him from trusting the very people trying to destroy him
Here's the storyline…
The film centers on the performance of Paul Walter Hausner as Jewell, and he does a terrific job with the role, never once losing his wide-eyed wannabe police officer attitude. I also liked how Kathy Bates played Richard's poor suffering mother and Rockwell was great as usual as the attorney. However, Hamm who is usually a welcomed performer, phoned in his performance, while Wilde, made out to be the bad guy in all this, did the best she could with the material she was given to work with.

My take… Richard Jewell is a large pill to swallow with its dubious message. In the hands of a director with less political bias and a more objective viewpoint, the film would probably have been much better. Wait until it hits your home screen to see it.
This film is a direct and firm indictment of both the FBI and the media, it even creates a situation wherein one of the characters begs the President to intervene. Eastwood himself, in the trailer for the film, goes so far as to say, "The world will know… the truth." Whose truth? What truth? I'd like to know because the film is currently under fire for both its depiction of journalist Kathy Scruggs and its portrayal of the FBI agents involved as villainous caricatures.
