BETTY WHO f you were to ask someone if they like Betty Who's music, chances are the response you'll get is "Who?" It's not because she's a new artist just starting out, or that she's a classic diva who's been away from the scene too long, and therefore unfamiliar to a fresh generation of music revelers. The truth is, ever since her infectious debut song "Somebody Loves You" became the center of a gay wedding proposal gone viral in 2012, Betty Who (aka Jessica Newham) has been on a worldwide adventure, performing at Pride events, music festivals and making synthpop the way it was meant to be heard.

So why isn't she blazing the charts with the likes of our other LGBTQ advocates like Ariana, Gaga or Dua? Perhaps it's because Betty Who has a sound that goes beyond the Top 40 box that labels like to put their artists in. RCA gave

RECLAIMS HER INDEPENDENCE it a shot when they snatched Newham up shortly after her internet explosion and tried to mold her into a practically unrecognizable version of herself. The move did nothing to bring Who to the mainstream spotlight and almost cost her the audience that made her in the first place. Now that she's broken free of the label chains, the Australian born singer is once again flaunting her independence on her third album; the appropriately titled Betty.

Who made it a point to go into this album with just one goal: "I am going to be the most me I can be," and that's exactly what we get.

You won't find your next club banger on this record, but we're fine with that. Betty Who's debut song was the battle cry that echoed around the globe, jumpstarting LGBTQ proposals worldwide as effortlessly as it ignited her career, and it's doubtful that she'll ever be able to recreate that moment again. Until she does, at least we can take comfort in the fact that the old Betty is back and better than ever!

Michael Bustamante: What first drew you to the stage?

JP Qualters: I was first drawn to the stage at a very young age. I was very lucky to grow up in Boston, which has a lot of opportunities for me to perform and learn about the craft of theatre. I was lucky to dance at some amazing studios and take voice lessons at Emerson College growing up!

MB: What is your earliest memory of performing?

JQ: My earliest memory of performing is, of course, at my dance recitals each year, but professionally it was at a theatre in the Boston area. I got to do Will Rogers Follies as well as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

MB: Describe School of Rock for those who have never seen the Broadway show or film.

JQ: Well, if you haven't seen the musical and/or the movie you are missing out! School of Rock is a show about a musician named Dewey, who wants to compete in the battle of the bands, but the character I play, Theo, kicks him out of their group. So, in order to compete, he has to lie and work as a substitute teacher then enter the contest with a group of To preview School of Rock, Wire Magazine grade school kids. The show has so many arcs and journeys. The two sat down with JP Qualters – who plays Theo main characters in the show are as amazingly talented as the kids! They play live every night! On top of playing instruments, they sing and dance in the show. and act – they are the show.

MB: How does this role compare with others you have played in your career?

JQ: The role I play in the show is Theo, the lead singer of Dewey's band "No Vacancy." It is beyond different for me – I'm not dancing at all, which is unusual for me, and I have to be a macho rocker dude.

Recently, I was an angel in Kinky Boots' first national tour, where I not only was dancing and singing but doing it in drag! Hopefully playing Theo shows everyone that I can be a grounded performer and sing a rock song, not just a dancer.

MB: What's your favorite part about School of Rock?

JQ: The kids! They are the reason I can get through the show if I'm having a bad day or not feeling well. They make the show and keep the adults on their feet. Not only are they incredibly talented and consistent, but they are also growing up in front of our eyes. It is such a cool experience!

MB: What would surprise our readers to know about this production?

JQ: These kids travel with us full-time, and on weekdays during the days when we aren't performing, they are in school. I am always in awe of them because they can't sleep in as the adults do; they get up, do schoolwork, and have enough time to maybe nap, eat dinner, and then come to work!

MB: Why is School of Rock a must-see show?

JQ: This show gives it to you in all different ways: you'll see Dewey's journey of defeating the odds and defying others' expectations of him, the school principal come out of her shell, and these talented kids play guitar and drums and the keyboard – just to name a few! Wire Magazine sat down with Dr. Robert Goubeaux, D.O. to learn more about Care Resource and its Miami Beach office located at 1680 Michigan Avenue, Suite 912.

Rafa Carvajal: Tell Wire Magazine readers about yourself.

Dr. Robert Goubeaux: I graduated from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1993, specializing in family medicine. Before coming to Care Resource, I was affiliated with South Miami Hospital and was the Family Practice Residency Program Director at Westchester General Hospital, devoted to diversified care comprehensive health care. I am a member of the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, the American Osteopathic College of Family Practice, and the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association.

RC: How long have you been with Care Resource?

RG: I have been with Care Resource for three years, and I currently serve as the health center's medical director.

RC: Tell us more about Care Resource's Miami Beach office.

RG: Our newly renovated Miami Beach office is one of our newest locations, located at 1680 Michigan Avenue, Suite 912. Staff that serve at the Miami Beach location include Albert Canas, MD, Internal Medicine/Primary Care Physician; Shari Klinger, MD, Internal Medicine/Primary Care Physician; Marlene Anne Jarin, MD, Primary Care Physician; Dario Archille, APRN, Nurse Practitioner; Lauren Abern, MD, Gynecologist; Gregg Pizzi, PsyD, Psychologist; Harold Balvin, Medical Case Manager; Maria Gabriela Perez, Housing Specialist; and myself.

RC: What services does this office provide to the LGBTQ community?

RG: Care Resource offers complete medical care in a friendly and professional environment. We provide same-day or next day appointments and prioritize keeping people healthy and providing care when and where they need it with approaches that attend to the whole health needs of patients – both physical and psychosocial.

We will be introducing our Medicated-Assisted Treatment (MAT) program for opioid addiction in the near future. MAT is the use of FDA-approved medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a "whole-patient" approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. Gynecologic services are also offered.

RC: What sets Care Resource apart from other LGBTQ nonprofits?

RG: Care Resource is a leader in LGBTQ healthcare equality and is committed to providing services that are sensitive to the needs of the LGBTQ community. Since our founding 35 years ago, Care Resource's services have promoted awareness, provided support for physical and mental health, and have been delivered with a supportive and

culturally sensitive environment. Moreover, the health center provides quality, compassionate, and informed care for our transgender patients. We serve transgender people and people at various places on the spectrum of gender identity and expression. We are committed to delivering healthcare in our region, and we proudly work together with our transgender community to lead the way in eliminating barriers to care. Care Resource is more than just a four-walled medical office. A patient once described Care Resource as "good people taking care of good people."

RC: Tell us about AIDS Walk Miami 2019.

RG: The 31st Annual AIDS Walk Miami 5K (3.1 miles) walkathon fundraiser on Sunday, April 28, 2019, will be held in Miami Beach at SoundScape Park. Congresswoman Donna Shalala will be serving as the master of ceremonies. She served as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton, was the president of the University of Miami and president of the Clinton Foundation. Registration and opening ceremonies begin at 8 a.m. and the Walk begins promptly at 9 a.m.

The post-walk celebration begins at 9:30 a.m. with a community health fair and a variety of activities for the entire family, including free wellness screenings, HIV/STI testing, giveaways, a kids area and dozens of booths with information about available medical and support resources available to the community. RC: What sets AIDS Walk Miami apart from other walks in South Florida?

RG: AIDS Walk Miami is South Florida's oldest fundraising event in making an impact in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It funds supportive services at Care Resource designed to stabilize and empower clients living with or affected by HIV, including guiding our clients through our referral and monitoring programs, connecting them with HIV specialists in various fields of medicine, prevention education, transportation vouchers, food, rent, and utility assistance.
