Air New Zealand, the airline that gave you naked flight attendants on the carrier’s safety video (I kid you not; YouTube it), has actually managed to come up with something even more eye-catching: Room to move around in Economy Class. And you don’t even have to leave your seat to do it.

It’s called “Skycouch,” and it is poised to revolutionize the coffin-like conditions one usually experiences in coach right before the Xanax kicks in. Think of it as a hide-abed for planes. Found on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 777-300s and conceived for long-haul flights, Skycouch consists of three specially-designed abutting Economy seats that, when the arm rests are lifted up and the footrests extended, form what has long been the long-sought-but-never-achieved Holy Grail of Economy Class: an honest-to-goodness, lie-flat bed. More over, the dimensions — 29” wide and 5’ 1” long — are comparable to berths often found in First and Business Class cabins.

Other amenities include a trinket tray, a winged headrest, pillows, and seat-belt extenders enabling passengers to stay buckled in even when out cold. Stretch your legs, cuddle with your flying buddy, and enjoy the Xanax.

Unveiled in 2010 by Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe, who is totally execu-hot and got just as naked as his employees in the airline’s “Nothing to Hide” ad campaign (he plays the silver-haired luggage-handler with the killer ass; YouTube that, too), Skycouch was first utilized on the Los Angeles-Auckland route. As the airline refits its entire long-haul fleet to include Skycouch, 20 to each 777-300, other North American, Asian, and European routes are expected to come on board throughout 2012.

Of course, Skycouch isn’t entirely altruistic; with less people flying, airlines the world over are thinking of all sorts of creative ways to get people to pay for seats, filled or not. Nevertheless, the pricing is straightforward: Of the three seats composing Skycouch, two are full price, while the third is half-off. When one does the math, this actually pulls off a nifty trick; having all the room of higher-end seats, Skycouch makes Economy a more attractive flying option compared to Business and First class, whose main allure, arguably, has always been the spaciousness.

“For those who choose, the days of sitting in Economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are gone,’’ Fyfe said in a statement. “The dream is now a reality, one that you can even share with a traveling companion — just keep your clothes on.”

While prepping for the big weekend, the Brazilian beatmaster took a minute to chat with me about Hell and Heaven and where he thinks he’ll end up.

What are you most excited about for Winter Party Festival?

I think the event is a great venue for DJs all over the world to showcase their sound.

I’m excited to bring some of the Brazilian beats to the Hell and Heaven pool party.

Do you have something special planned for the sinners and saints at the Hell and Heaven pool party?

Oh yeah, I’ve been working on some hot tracks. I want to make it as fun and uplifting as possible of course with my signature sound. I want to take the boys on a journey of house.

What is it about the Hell & Heaven party that has made it so popular around the world?

The vibe and the sense of community. We all have the same goal – to make the best party possible focused on music and entertainment.

I have always enjoyed playing a variety of sports, in addition to working out. In high school and college, I played tennis, football and was on the track and swim teams.

I also wrestled. Wrestling is a great sport, and demands a certain type of training.

When I first started to get bigger, a talent scout for one of the big wrestling promotions approached me about joining their training program for new talent. At that time, professional wrestling wasn’t quite the “industry” it is now. I don’t regret my decision, but always wonder what might have been. So here is a quick over of some training tips that successful wrestlers use in the workout routines.

Workouts must be as short as possible while working as many muscles as possible, so short, and intense. You can achieve this with circuit training – going between stations quickly without resting. Do only one or two sets of an exercise (low volume to prevent overtraining) and you can train the whole body in a short time so you only need to do it once or twice a week.

Wrestlers are always trying to maintain or lose weight. The best way to lose weight quickly is to go on a low sodium diet, eat low sodium tuna, plain noodles and rice, etc. While you are on this diet, eat a banana or two every day. They contain a lot of potassium and don’t cause fluid retention as sodium does. Don’t severely restrict your carbs or protein, just cut out some fat. So, a low sodium, high potassium, low-fat diet combined with a total body circuit once or twice a week will help you build strength.

You should work the muscles from largest to smallest, in quick succession with each set to concentric failure. Here’s what I think is a very good workout for wrestlers: • Squats: 2 sets 6-8, 1 minute rest between each set • Chin-ups: 1 set to failure • Barbell rows: 1 set to failure • Lateral raises: 1 set to failure • Flat bench: 1 set to failure • French presses: 1 set to failure • Barbell curls: 21’s • Calf presses/raises: 2 sets to failure You should go from one exercise to the next, with no rest. The key is to get in there, hit your muscles, and get out before they start breaking down. I included calves because strengthening these muscles are important to wrestlers, any time you are on your feet you’re using calves to maneuver and to generate power. Try this and you will look great – in and out of your singlet. Who knows, maybe you can find someone to exchange holds with – on and off the mat.

A SOUTH BEACH WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL TO REMEMBER This year’s Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival was one of my favorite events in a long time. I have gone to Festival events several times in years past, but this year I thought most of the events I had the opportunity to attend were some of the best ever. I certainly had my share of delicious food, great wines, and plenty of cocktails. I also had an opportunity to meet and greet some of my favorite celebrity chefs from the Food Network, and fantastic executive chefs from some of the top restaurants in the U.S., Miami, and Miami Beach.

These are the events I attended this year ranked with number 1 being my absolute favorite: 1. The Best Thing I Ever Ate 2. Trucks on the Beach 3. The Q 4. Grand Tasting Village on Saturday 5. Party Impossible

I loved #1 because I tasted mouth-watering food from some of the top restaurants in the U.S. and the live band played some of the best music I have ever heard at an event. The band rocked! Number 2 taught me that I had no idea some of the most tasty food I have ever eaten can come from a cluck of metal on four wheels painted really cool to attract my attention. I will definitely be stepping up to truck windows for delicious grub more often. I truly love champagne and barbecue, so #3 gave me a chance to thoroughly enjoy both of my faves. The grand daddy of them all comes in at number #4, almost tied for third. What a treat it was to sample so much, all at once, in one place. Pacing was definitely the key to enjoying it all.

The Miami Beach Gay Pride celebration has grown into a three-day celebration with a Friday block party (at MOVA), a Saturday pool party (at the Surfcomber) and the parade and festival on Sunday (on Ocean Drive). Miami Beach City Mayor Matti Bower will be participating in the celebration for the 4th annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade & Festival.

The Sunday event is a celebration of the extraordinary strength, beauty, and contributions of South Florida’s LGBT community. Wire Magazine chatted with Babak Movahedi, president of Miami Beach Gay Pride’s Board of Directors, about the new and exciting things planned for Miami Beach Gay Pride 2012.

What are some of the new and exciting things planned for Miami Beach Gay Pride 2012?

Miami Beach Gay Pride has expanded from a one-day event to include a roster of events over a four-day period. And because we’ve been attracting a huge number of out-of-town guests for Pride, this year we moved the Parade and Festival to Sunday. This allows us to schedule new events like a pool party at the Surfcomber on Saturday afternoon. We’ve also added value to the Angels/Archangels VIP program by adding a special Parade viewing standing along Ocean Drive at 10th Street, which includes an open bar and a prime viewing area along the parade route. We’ve also confirmed a stellar list of performers this year for the Festival, including Wynter Gordon, Kristine W, Jessica Sutta from the Pussycat Dolls, JoJo, Frenchie Davis from The Voice and Inaya Day. They will really get the crowd going. Last, but certainly not least, we are also very proud to have Stoli come on board as our major event sponsor.

Is it true that they will be closing Ocean Drive for the event?

Yes, the City of Miami Beach is so supportive of Pride and they recognize the importance of giving our guests a truly wonderful experience. Ocean Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic for the duration of all the festivities. This will allow our guests to experience all the various elements of the Parade and Festival without dodging traffic.

What’s your role as president of Miami Beach Gay Pride’s Board of Directors?

I oversee Pride’s Board of Directors and the entire scope of all the events. We have Board members responsible for the events, community relations, bar relations, marketing and finances.

Who are the other Board members?

Chad Richter, Chip Arndt, Laura Veitia, Monica Goldman, Joel Stedman and Edison Farrow. Our new executive producer this year is Paolo Pincente.

How many people came to Miami Beach Gay Pride last year?

The City estimated we had 45,000 people at Pride last year. Our projections for this year are 60,000 guests.

What’s been the most rewarding thing about working on Miami Beach Gay Pride?

I love working with the community. Pride brings together so many people from so many walks of life, that it’s a great bonding experience for everyone. From working with the City to working with our sponsors, to celebrating our Legacy Couples who have been together for 20 or more years, the sense of pride I get from Pride is truly rewarding.

Are there additions to the parade this year?

Who will be the Grand Marshal?

I can’t divulge the Grand Marshal just yet. All I can say is stay tuned for an announcement of epic proportions.

Miami Beach Gay Pride is offering a cruise this year. Can you tell us a little about that?

The Fourth Annual “Miami Beach Pride Cruise,” sails Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 20, onboard the Norwegian Sky. Immediately following all the Miami Beach Gay Pride festivities, the Pride Cruise is an ideal way to extend the magic of Pride weekend for another five days at sea. SAVE (the predecessor of SAVE Dade), an organization that was formed to support the LGBT community and fight discrimination, organized that first Winter Party, which put them on the map as one of the premier organizations in the fight for human rights in Florida. The Dade Human Rights Foundation produced the event until 2003 and then the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force took control of producing the Winter Party Festival and its sister event, the Miami Recognition Dinner, with the pledge that two thirds of the proceeds from both events would stay in South Florida. Since 2004, the Task Force has been able to donate $1.2 million to South Florida LGBT charities via grants administered through The Miami Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund Grant Program.

Winter Party is a party with a purpose with an emphasis on both party and purpose. The boys from up north will get an opportunity to escape the cold weather, throw off their stuffy suits, enjoy the Miami sunshine and join the South Florida guys who have year-round tans. Winter Party Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year, featuring six action-packed days and nights, nine spectacular dance parties and over 10,000 guests from around the world. Partygoers will revel in this annual six-day extravaganza that features some of the hottest venues and parties showcasing some of the best DJs in the world. This year Winter Party offers up a tasty menu of new events along with old favorites, some at new venues along with a few surprises.

While Winter Party Festival is an incredible event attracting thousands of international visitors to Miami, the organizing of this event is a giant undertaking.

shared some of the behind the scenes responsibilities of organizing Winter Party Festival.

“Our main responsibilities are to manage the eight divisions of the Festival, which are run primarily by volunteers, and to serve as the community liaisons for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force which produces the event.” Victor says that producing Winter Party Festival is a year-round task and they have already started working on the 2013 Festival. “Four Task Force staffers are dedicated to the success of this event on a full-time basis and approximately 500 volunteers make Winter Party Festival happen starting with my Co-Chair, Chad Richter, our Vice Chair, Derek Yee, and myself. We are supported by eight Executive Committee members, 67 Festival Committee members, 30 or so Associate Committee members, and an army of volunteers who work the week of the Festival. I never cease to be amazed by the amazing support that our community provides throughout the year to ensure that the Winter Party Festival is successful for LGBTQ people on both a local and national level.”

Miami Beach welcomes travelers all year and has been very accommodating to Winter Party Festival. “The City is very welcoming to the LGBT community – both our out-of-town guests and our locals,” adds Victor. “Not only do they appreciate and understand the tourism value of Winter Party Festival guests, City representatives also enjoy attending our events. In many ways, the City of Miami Beach is very progressive in its attitude toward the LGBT community overall and they certainly roll out the rainbow colored welcome mat for us.”

Many partygoers will be experiencing Winter Party Festival for the first time, but the Festival has been a popular not-to-be-missed annual event with guests returning year after year. “The festival has grown significantly throughout the years, not only do we have more events, a larger volunteer committee, and more guests than ever, the quality of our events only gets better,” says Victor.

“This year’s Festival is going to be amazing! We’ve really focused on branding the “Hottest Winter in the World” throughout all of our marketing efforts and by developing relationships with international entities such as Gay Village from Rome, Hell and Heaven from Brazil, and Matinee - which produces events across the globe. And of course, Pa’ella, our signature Women’s Latin dance event is going to be bigger, better, and sexier than ever. All in all, we have a total of 22 events comprised of our dance, community, receptions, and women’s events. This will be the best Winter Party Festival that our city and our guests have experienced yet. I have no doubt that everyone will be booking their trip to Miami for Winter Party 2013 before the week is over.”

Winter Party Festival is not only a party destination but also a place where friends and memories are made. Wire Magazine caught up with some of the people that make Winter Party Festival a great event.

eighth time. “I’m excited to be returning to spin the pool party, one of the events I’ve never played.” Brett rose to DJ stardom after appearances at circuit parties like Gay Days Orlando, New York Pride Pier Dance, San Diego Zoo Party, White Party Palm Springs and White Party Miami, and Masterbeat New Year’s Los Angeles. Brett brings his prowess at the turntables to The Under One Sun Pool Party. “It brings out all the hottest men getting for a playful romp in the sun by the pool as they prepare for the beach party the next day,” adds Brett.

ROSABEL, the incredible DJ duo, Chicago’s Ralphi Rosario and Miami’s Abel, will bring their Grammy-nominated musical magic to the Flare party at the Ice Palace Film Studios West on Saturday. With Rosario, a pioneering legend of House music, and Abel, one of the most successful DJs in circuit history, the Flare party is sure to be a phenomenal event.

When asked what ROSABEL would be bringing to the party, Abel was quick to answer, “Energy, tribal, divas, anthems, beats, and fire to the dance floor!!” Abel describes Winter Party as “One of the most legendary events still in full force, packed with hot fun in the sun, the DJs, the events, and the people. It’s our kind of family reunion.”

Abel says his favorite Winter Party memory is the Return to Paragon event at Level. “I will never forget and treasure the Return to Paragon Event (at Level, now Mansion). The most positive energy, the tears of joy, the people, it was over the top in every way. My second fondest memory was the following year at Space for Return to Paragon 2 and continuing through Red Eye for a total of 19 hours nonstop music. It was the longest I have ever spun.” Abel, who ruled for years at the legendary Club Salvation in South Beach, is looking forward to the entire week of festivities. “I think this is going to be an excellent year and people are really looking forward to an incredible weekend. The masses will be flocking in like the good old days. People will be going home, and saying wow, I can’t wait until next year.”

DJ/Producer Joe Gauthreaux, one of the hottest DJs in the industry, will be spinning at the Winter Party Beach Party on Sunday. Gauthreaux, popular at events from Winter Party Festival to Black Party New York, has recently been producing his own remixes like “The Power of Music”

Like everyone involved with Winter Party Festival, Joe says he’s excited about this year’s Festival. “I’m looking forward to seeing everyone’s beautiful faces on the beach in Miami. Joe shared a brief description of the Winter Party Beach Party for all you Winter Party virgins. “It’s an outdoor party from noon to sunset on the beach. It’s really a magical event because there really are not that many parties like it anymore. I can play music that I wouldn’t normally get to play in a club. So, I’m looking forward to it.” For Winter Party veterans, you’ll remember that Joe was the DJ for the Winter Party Beach Party in 2008. “It was such an amazing experience. The fact that I get to do it again just four years later is unbelievable. I’m very grateful.”

Winter Party Festival has a schedule of exciting events, some old favorites, some new. “We do have new events this year, such as a happy hour at Haven, a sexy new lounge on Lincoln Road, and we’re also hosting our first women’s T-Dance at The Lords hotel,” adds Victor DiazHerman. “I’m also excited about the new twists on past events. I think Gay Village is going to super-impress us with their Saturday night Rome Is Burning event at Cameo and the women’s events are going to leave our ladies in awe! This festival is really going to be like no other in Winter Party Festival’s 19-year history.”

Winter Party Festival is indeed a giant party. Like DJ Brett Henrichsen says, “It’s all about sun, beach, men, music, and fun.” But Winter Party Festival is also one of South Florida’s biggest LGBT fundraising events.

“Since the Task Force took over the Winter Party Festival we have contributed nearly $1.2 million to the Miami Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund from the proceeds of Winter Party and its sister event the Miami Recognition Dinner,” says Russell Roybal, Deputy Executive Director of the Gay Task Force.” Many people are not clear as to the purpose of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. “Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force builds the power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community from the ground up. The Task Force is the nation’s premier social justice organization fighting to improve the lives of LGBT people and creating lasting, positive change for all. The Task Force is the progressive voice in the LGBT movement and the LGBT voice in the progressive movement.”

Billy Elliot, the 2009 Tony Award-winning best musical, hits the stage of the Broward Center this week with Matthew Prescott, Miami resident, onboard as resident choreographer. Based on the international smash-hit film, Billy Elliot is the story of one boy’s journey to make his dreams come true. Wire Magazine caught up with Matthew Prescott to get his views on Billy Elliot.

Tell us the story of Billy Elliot.

Billy is a young boy that is coming of age in a mining town in Northern England.

His family and the rest of the village is part of the miners strike that took place in the 1980s. He stumbles across a rag tag group of dancers under the direction of a jaded dance teacher, Mrs. Wilkenson, who sees the potential that Billy has. The story follows his journey.

What’s your favorite moment in the show?

The visuals of the production obviously come from a cinematic mind. The choreography is inspiring and clever. One of my favorite moments is when Billy’s father makes it clear to the panel of judges at Billy’s audition for the Royal Ballet School that he is completely behind Billy, then turns to Billy and looks him in the eyes and reassures Billy that he is completely in support of him. It is a beautiful moment of recognition that gives me the goose bumps every time.

Is there anything else that you’d like to share with Wire’s readers?

The story of Billy Elliot is my story. I came from a cattle ranch in the range land of Idaho and despite being surrounded by cowboys and farmhands I knew that I was destined for something different. My calling as a dancer led me to leave my family at a young age to pursue my dreams, and I was able to make a career that is unique to me. I also know that the story of Billy Elliot can help inspire us all to be our authentic selves.

I understand you’re an accomplished dancer and choreographer. What does it mean to work with a dance show like Billy Elliot?

Coming into the world of Billy Elliot has been an entirely new experience for me. Prior to joining the company I was working as a freelance dancer around the country based out of Miami Beach. I was making my living as a concert dancer/performer and was beginning my journey as an emerging choreographer. Having to see the whole picture and how everybody fits into that picture has been a valuable experience for me as I look forward into my career.

THE IMMORTAL World Tour takes place in a fantastical realm where we discover Michael’s inspirational Giving Tree – the wellspring of his creativity. Like other Cirque shows, this two-hour show is a fast moving spectacle of nimble performers, jumping, twisting, dancing, whirling, twirling, moonwalking and occasionally defying gravity. Five clown-like performers known as The Fanatics take us on this journey. Wire Magazine was able to catch up with one of the talented performers, Leo Moctezuma, who is playing one of The Fanatics and get a few insights on the show.

While Leo Moctezuma never worked with Michael Jackson himself, he has worked with his share of talented performers. His tour resume, a who’s who of musical greats, includes Ricky Martin, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Paulina Rubio, and Spice Girls. If you saw Britney Spears’ “Onyx Hotel” World Tour you might remember Leo’s intimate onstage kiss with Britney in the most talked about song in the show…”Breath On Me.” Leo was certainly a standout in Christina Aguilera’s “Funhouse” World Tour as he was the only male dancer in the show that he also choreographed. How long have you been a part of Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour?

I’ve been in Michael Jackson since its creation.

Tell us about the show.

“It’s about Michael’s voice. It’s a magical experience told through Cirque du Soleil performances.

What’s your role in the show?

I’m a featured dancer and also play one of the five fanatics that tell the story.

What’s the highlight of the show?

There are so many. It’s a live concert and it’s an amazing experience. Half of the musicians in the show worked with Michael.

How do you feel about being a part of this show?

It’s amazing. It’s a blessing. One of my dreams was to dance with him but now I’m dancing in a show that’s a tribute to him and his music.

Would Michael like this show?

Definitely. Michael was a huge fan of Cirque du Soleil.

So let’s pretend that you, a 40ish happily single male person, and your BFF, a 40ish happily single female person, hang all the time with two other couples, two happily married couples, who all of a sudden start having kids. Over the course of a few years you see them going through all the agonies of early childhood rearing, see what it’s doing to their relationships, and how its destroying their sex lives, and you decide that it’s just not for you. But…now here’s the rub, you both decide you want a kid of your own now before it’s too late; you just don’t want the relationship that goes along with it. So, you’re best friends, you’re smart, you can beat this game, why not just have a kid together, share the responsibilities equally, and you can each keep on looking for that right person to settle down with. Sounds perfect right.

What could possibly go wrong? Nothing. Oh Yeah!

That’s the premise of this complicated romantic Dramedy, with a really great ensemble cast made up mostly of those funny ladies from the film Bridesmaids. It’s a wonderful ride filled with the magic of film from the opening scene until about the last third of the movie. Not that it gets bad, it doesn’t, it just gets way too predictable and that disappointed me. Still, it was a real delight to watch the whole thing play out. It’s a good little movie.

Writer, Producer Jennifer Westfeldt, who wrote the 2001 Indie hit Kissing Jessica Stein, makes an impressive debut here as director. She finds that hard to achieve rhythm and perception of everyday life that brings you into a story and holds you there with its heart and its warm humor. However, I would have liked to see her utilize the women more. Kristen Wiig was simply underused and Maya Rudolph was smothered by her role. The men, though, were uniformly on-point throughout, great performances, and it seemed at times that Westfeldt understood them much better than she did the girls.

If you wind up at this film because your partner wants to see it, I promise you, you won’t mind. All in all, this film’s a great couple of hours in the theater filled with sharp humor, enough “eye candy” to satisfy everyone, and it actually delivers some great insight into what makes us all human.

No night out in South Beach would be complete without TWIST, and Friday nights are some of the best. Guests of all kinds couldn’t wait to get some late night fun with great beats, hot dancers, and a variety of bars for their choosing.

by Michael W. Sasser As an unrepentant hometown South Florida fan, it’s a pleasure to have witnessed our communities grow up and burst into the international spotlight. Yet every time a major event comes to town, there is also a political point to make and it’s something every resident should know.

Never is the line more thin between the South Florida political class, media and what we will call the local one percenters.

While covering high profile events over the years, it occurred to me that the inner ring of people enjoying the VIP amenities was the same – event after event and year after year. There were the politicians, there were the wealthy society types, and there were the media people.

Of course, if you are a member of the media, you might enjoy this. In fact, I did for a number of years. Over time, though, wisdom and deeper understanding of how things operate among the urban elite crowd made me very uncomfortable with this social arrangement.

I remember being at one major event along with a publisher who had sat on the sponsoring organization’s board. His media outlet had been very supportive of this sponsoring organization and no one batted an eye about there being any sort of conflict. This is entirely routine. But when a story broke in other media that reflected poorly on this organization – and further, asserted there was evidence of wrong-doing that anyone inside the organization should have been able to

see, it really got me thinking. Can the public be served when there is a nexus of the political class, the powerful money class, and the media? It’s a nexus one can witness personally any time there is a major event in town, and hopefully it makes savvy voters nervous.

There is a perception among some that because media’s hard left bias makes many members appear to be anti-fatcat, that media is somehow a watchdog of the monied class’s public activities. This isn’t true at all. Major media members have access, which is a currency – just as politicians have power as their currency and the well-heeled have… actual currency. Same-same in that all are advantaged classes. When media rails against the wealthy, it’s either partisan, insincere or aimed at some ambiguous class – not the folks media rub shoulders with routinely.

It’s imperative for the public to always keep in mind that major media is in no way isolated from the corridors of civic power, that they are, in fact, a part of the apparatus. Not many media members are making one-percenter money, but each and every one of them has that currency – access – that instantly permits them mobility between classes that other, harder working citizens will never achieve. They are players in a game the private sector middle class can rarely enter. That’s a reality that should at least give moment to pause.
