The Conference provides highvalue content addressing supply chain intelligence, workforce opportunities and operational best practices. The sessions are open to everyone, so the challenge is balancing your time on the exhibit floor with the sessions.

WAI Executive Committee President Jim York Insteel Industries First Vice President Daniel Blais Prysmian Group Second Vice President

The exhibition, with more than a hundred companies represented, is a showcase of innovation and solutions. It will provide an effective source for understanding the state-of-the-industry from the suppliers, who would like to share some two years of advances you may not be aware of. We encourage you to spend time to get on the floor. We are confident you will return better for the experience. As you work your way around the floor, make sure to stop at the WAI stand at 122 and cast your ticket for the James Monroe Wire & Cable drawing. We are fortunate to have strong support from our sponsors. They help make it possible for us to deliver a meaningful mix of education, inspiration and potential opportunities. Beyond the business end, it’s also a well-deserved setting to enjoy ourselves. It’s great to be back.

WIRE EXPO • ENCORE PLANT TOUR

A lot to take in at the Encore Wire tour Tour participants will be able to first-hand experience one of the greatest success stories in the wire and cable industry. Encore Wire started out in 1989 as a 68,000-sq-ft warehouse building in McKinney, Texas. Today, through unprecedented growth, the manufacturer of copper and aluminum residential, commercial and industrial building wire has multiple plants that collectively account for approximately three million sq ft. And the company, which has some 1,600 employees, is not done. There are plans for further expansions on its 425-acre campus. Not only is the sheer size of the operations impressive, so are the logistics that Encore Wire has designed and employed to make its campus functional. That includes a first-ever company solution: an internal train system. Dubbed the “Encore Express,” the tug can tow up to five large carts, each of which can carry up to 10,000 pounds of finished goods, allowing up to 50,000 pounds to be moved to the new Service Center in a single load. Sadly, attendees will not be able to ride the Encore Express, but the tour should be a memorable experience. 

He will present his Mordica Lecture—Steel chemistry and its impact on wire properties—on Tuesday, June 7, at 3:30 pm, and be honored at the Awards Ceremony the next day. The 2005 president of the WAI, Bhagwat was principal metallurgist for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company from 1990 to 2000; worked for eight years at the Seneca Wire Group, as vice president, quality & technology, and as plant manager for the company, which was then part of FENOX, LLC. A former Goodyear colleague praised Bhagwat’s ability to develop and deploy technology. “The outcome of his

R&D efforts provided (us) with innovative reinforcements. ... Anand’s team invented new steel chemistries and processes that resulted in numerous patents in the field of high tensile steel for tire cord applications.” He also took an active role in transferring those technologies to Goodyear’s plants in the U.S. and Luxembourg. For those contributions, he was honored with the Chairman’s Special Service Award in 1995. Lauded by another award nominator who has known Bhagwat for more than 30 years, “Throughout this entire time, I gained admiration and respect for his technical, innovate and leadership skills. Not only has he presented numerous papers of outstanding performance, including some that received prizes for merit, he has served as a participant, chairperson and mentor on numerous technical and management committees of WAI.” Bhagwat won the Donnellan Memorial Award in 2009.

President’s Award >>> Wednesday, June 8 | 8:30 am -9:45 am

WIRE EXPO • AWARDS

Joe Downes to be honored for his many contributions Joe Downes, a long-time key sales executive for Leggett & Platt, was chosen as the winner of the WAI’s President’s Award. The photo of Downes—a WAI Life Member who retired as senior vice president in 2015—is from a presentation he made in 2009 to the WAI Ohio Valley Chapter. “During his more than 45 years in the steel wire industry, Joe was an amazing person on many levels,” said WAI President Jim York, who chose Downes for the 2022 award. “I saw his ethics and work style firsthand. I count myself fortunate to have been mentored by him for almost 15 years.” He cited Downes’s work ethic and dedication to customers and colleagues as well as his support to the wire industry. Downes entered the wire industry in 1976 in a sales position with Container Wire Company, a small wire producer based in Jacksonville, Florida. Two years later, it was bought by L&P, where he worked until his retirement. Over the years, he was a road warrior of the first degree, his Delta Airlines account topping three million miles, and

more than a million more on other carriers. He thrived on interaction with customers, suppliers and employees, yet found time to support the Association as well as the American Wire Producers Association. In a December 2015 WJI article, the WAI Life Member wrote about his career, sharing his thoughts on the field. “Do not expect much in the way of glamour, and don’t expect that many of your friends will either understand what you do or care to hear you talk about it. Expect that there will be bumps in the road, although that goes for any field. ... I can tell you that if you are willing to learn and don’t need glitz, you can enjoy this business. It might not be sexy, but it’s real, and what we do matters. Many of my best friends are co-workers, customers and vendors and I will miss the daily interaction with them. I’d like to think they feel the same way.”

Fundamentals of Wire & Cable Manufacturing >>> Monday, June 6 | 8:30 am– 5:00 pm

WIRE EXPO • FUNDAMENTALS OF WIRE MANUFACTURING

This very popular one-day, pre-conference course provides attendees a solid grounding in the essentials of wire and cable manufacturing. It includes five general topics and following lunch there are four sessions each in separate ferrous and nonferrous/electrical tracks. The program is valuable to industry newcomers as well as for seasoned professionals seeking a refresher. Following the last sessions, there is a 45-minute Q&A session. For presenter bios, go to www.wireexpo22.com, click on “education” then “speakers,” and the individual photos.

GENERAL | 8:30 am– noon

Mechanics of Wiredrawing

Matt Reinoehl, SDI LaFarga COPPERWORKS, USA This course presents fundamental engineering principles and process calculations that are used to design, analyze, and improve metal rod and wiredrawing operations. Topics include a basic overview of wiredrawing mechanics with respect to material behavior and process parameters. Die angle and reduction will be addressed in light of the Delta-parameter and its practical application. Drawing limits, friction and lubrication, work-piece heating, and temperature effects are also discussed.

Drawing Dies

Tom Maxwell, Jr., Die Quip Corporation, USA This presentation focuses on the die, the most important part of the drawing process. Without it, the best drawing machines, lubricant, and treatment systems cannot reduce the wire diameter. However, with a die, vice pliers, and a hammer, wire can be drawn, albeit slowly, as it has been for over 2,000 years. The intention of this course is to provide an understanding of what makes a die work, how it is designed, causes of failure, and problems with drawing larger sizes.

Wiredrawing Lubricant Technology

Dave Gzesh and Svet Pavlovsky, Blachford Corp., USA The wiredrawing process generates significant heat that affects its ability to ensure quality wire production. The amount of generated heat is influenced by the interaction of factors that include the metal composition, surface preparation, production equipment and routine maintenance. This presentation reviews basic lubrication principles, typical lubricant compositions, and routine lubricant maintenance procedures for both ferrous dry drawing and ferrous and nonferrous wet drawing.

Wire Breaks and Surface Damage

Horace Pops, Horace Pops Consulting, Inc., USA This course classifies wire breaks from a perspective that compares material defects to process-related problems. Rod defects will include both casting and rolling issues such as internal voids, foreign contaminants, rolled-in scale, hot cracks, and surface porosity. The effects of wiredrawing speed and lubrication will be discussed with respect to generation of fines, shaving, galling, and other surface defects.

First-Time Exhibiting Company Dynamic Wire Solutions (by Slabaugh Metal Fab) Stand: 525 Description: Our company redesigns and innovates the cooling process in a system. Representative: James Slabaugh, vice president, tel. 574-342-0554, ext. 108, smfabr.d@gmail.com WJI: Why will you be exhibiting at Wire Expo for the first time in 2022? We see the need to innovate and customize the cooling systems and its accessories. In 2017, we branched out to wire and cable. We used customer feedback to innovate these new systems, and now can help manufacturers that want to upgrade cooling systems or install new lines. WJI: Why should attendees want to visit your booth? We feel a hands-on approach is the best way to get to know a product. We’re serious about this enough

that we are taking a total of six stands to display a 10-ft line so we can show attendees what we can do. Our staff will be ready to help attendees with specific questions or needs associated with our products. They will be able to explain how and why our new lines and upgrades can help. We believe that meeting the people who stand behind a product is critical, almost a necessity. Information packets are good, but they don’t replace a face-to-face meeting. We want to meet anyone who has an interest in our products because of our guiding principle: people are the world’s most valuable asset.

Exhibiting: Supported in the U.S. and Canada by QMS America, FLYMCA is a world renown Spanish manufacturing company for the cable industry, focused on large stranding, cabling and armoring machinery for the energy and steel markets with special solutions for machinery for submarine and off-shore cables. FLYMCA designs and manufactures its machinery totally in Spain. Some of the main developments in recent years include advances to its tubular stranders and bow cablers that not only reduce stopping and change-over time, they also reduce operator intervention to improve safety. These include accumulators to allow continuous operation, automatic systems to load and unload reels simultaneously, and automatic cutting and taping of cable ends with automatic change-over from one take-up to another. To meet the increasing demand for large stranding and armoring machinery to produce submarine cables, two armoring configurations are offered: large tubular stranders with a bullhead configuration, mainly used for fiber optic submarine cables, and planetary-armoring lines for heavy power transmission cables. These are produced on large machines for a high number of wires; they are applied by a single or dual cage working in a tandem operation. The company is specialized in rigid stranders for large cross section cables (127 wires) including automatic loading systems, shaped wire stranding heads, heavy compaction systems, water-blocking application systems for yarn and powder, etc.

First-Time Exhibiting Company Gene Brown Extrusion Techniques Stand: 510 Description: With decades of extrusion experience of its founder, Gene Brown Extrusion Techniques (GBET) provides practical services for manufacturers, from troubleshooting and training to optimizing your operation processes. Contact: Gene Brown, principal, tel. 727-403-8392, gbextrusiontech@gmail.com WJI: Why will you be exhibiting at Wire Expo for the first time in 2022? There is a need in our industry for greater understanding of the extrusion process. I started GBET two years ago to address that need. I’ve got 40 years in this field, and I was lucky to have been taught by some of the industry’s best. I learned what causes extrusion problems and, more importantly, how to correct them. GBET can provide training and knowledge to others and instruct newcomers in the nuances of the field. You can’t get the results you want if you are not a master of your practice. Extrusion is simple ... until all of a sudden it isn’t.

60

SHOW PROGRAM

Why should attendees want to visit your booth? GBET can offer many benefits that we can discuss with attendees in detail, each specifically designed for the customer’s needs and requirements. Those include: hands-on extrusion training; process improvement; facilitating equipment specifications and purchases; and project management. I also like instilling a sense of dedication to the people who work at a plant because they matter. If employers want to attract and keep good employees, they need to instill a sense that they are vital, not just button pushers.
