One Source Serving Six Continents With the Same:

John W. Mellowes, CEO & owner, Charter Manufacturing

Mellowes is the winner of the 2026 WAI Champion Award that honors an individual for recognition of his leadership and his company’s sustained support of the Wire Association International and its educational mission. He has served as CEO of Mequon, Wisconsin-based Charter Manufacturing since 2013. A fourth-generation family owner, he follows in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Alfred Mellowes, who founded the company in 1936. He holds a B.S. degree from Princeton University and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

More than a hundred booths have been taken by suppliers that will be ready to share their latest solutions. If you have a project or want to consider alternatives, this is the place to flesh out possibilities. This is the time for thoughtful conversations with companies that are well known as well as some that are new to the event.
Wire Expo will occupy the expanded Baird Center alongside the Electrical Wire Processing Technology Expo (EWPTE), making downtown Milwaukee a shared hub for wire and cable professionals. The shows will run concurrently under one roof with coordinated hours and reciprocal hall access, so registrants can move easily between wire and cable production, wire harness and electrical processing exhibits while meeting new suppliers, exploring technologies and cultivating prospects.

The Wednesday tour of Charter Steel, part of Charter Manufacturing, will offer an exclusive, comprehensive look at the steelmaking process from melt to roll and processing. Mechanics of wiredrawing
Matt Reinoehl, SDI LaFarga COPPERWORKS
This course presents fundamental engineering principles and process calculations that are used to design, analyze, and improve metal rod and wiredrawing operations. Topics include a basic overview of wiredrawing mechanics with respect to material behavior and process parameters. Die angle and reduction will be addressed in light of the parameter and its practical application. Drawing limits, friction and lubrication, work-piece heating, and temperature effects are also discussed.
Joao Norona, Paramount Die Company
This presentation focuses on the die, the most important part of the drawing process. Without it, the best drawing machines, lubricant, and treatment systems cannot reduce the wire diameter. However, with a die, vice pliers and a hammer, wire can be drawn, albeit slowly, as it has been for over 2,000 years. The intention of this course is to provide an understanding of what makes a die work, how it is designed, causes of failure, and problems with drawing larger sizes.
Svet Pavlovsky, H.L. Blachford Ltd.
The wiredrawing process generates significant heat that affects the lubricants’ physical and chemical properties which in turn affects the lubricants’ ability to provide separation of the wire to the die. The amount of generated heat is influenced by complex interactions between metal composition, surface preparation, production equipment, and other factors. This presentation reviews basic lubrication principles, and typical lubricant compositions used in ferrous and nonferrous applications.
Horace Pops, Horace Pops Consulting, Inc.
This session presents a classification of wire breaks from a perspective that compares material defects to process-related problems. Rod defects will include both casting and rolling issues such as internal voids, foreign contaminants, rolled-in scale, hot cracks, and surface porosity. The effects of wiredrawing speed and lubrication will be discussed with respect to generation of fines, shaving, galling, and other surface defects.
