The oilfield services company Baker Hughes and Italian energy infrastructure company Snam report that they have successfully completed testing on a first-ever hybrid hydrogen gas turbine for natural gas transmission systems.

Baker Hughes recently tested its NovaLT12 gas turbine at the firm’s facility in Florence, Italy. Snam plans to install it in 2021at one of its compressor stations in Treviso province, Italy.

Snam is testing the introduction of hydrogen into high-pressure gas transmission first at 5% and eventually 10% mix. The company is also committed to supporting the growth of the Italian supply chain through the development of technologies to facilitate the use of hydrogen across industry.

Houston-based Baker Hughes has developed the NovaLT gas turbine to burn methane gas and hydrogen blends from 5% to 100%. The gas turbines can be used in industrial cogeneration, pipeline and offshore operations.

The successful test followed just a few days after the launch of the European Commission’s Hydrogen Strategy, which establishes intermediate goals for the production of renewable hydrogen in Europe - including the production of at least 40GW of hydrogen from renewables by 2030 and by 2050. The stargey outlines the large scale introduction of hydrogen across all hard-to-decarbonize sectors.

“With this new testing with Baker Hughes, we are taking a further step forward in the path of adapting our network to the transportation of hydrogen,” comments Snam CEO Marco Alvera. “Hydrogen will be a pillar of the fight against climate change alongside renewable electricity and will potentially reach 20 to 25% of the global energy mix by 2050.”

Energy producers see hydrogen as an ally in emissions-reduction strategies. The challenge is adapting natural gas-fired turbines to burn hydrogen, which has different combustive properties than methane.

IN BRIEF POWER PROJECT MOVES FROM COAL TO NATURAL GAS Siemens Energy will provide its gas turbine technology and long-term services to the planned 900 MW Cascade Power Plant in Alberta, Canada.

The project supports the decarbonisation of Alberta’s power supply by switching from coal to natural gas.

Once operational, the power plant is expected to reduce Alberta’s carbon emissions from energy production by up to 5%. Siemens Energy received the order from Kineticor, a developer and manager of clean power projects across Canada with the end user being the Cascade Power Project Limited Partnership. The plant is expected to begin operating in 2023. Siemens Energy will provide SGT6-8000H gas turbines in single shaft combine cycle configuration.

POTENTIAL FOR 30,000 NEW JOBS IN GREEN RECOVERY WITH INVESTMENT IN THE UK’S ELECTRICITY NETWORK Around 30,000 new jobs could be created along with wider economic benefits if substantial investment in upgrading the UK’s energy network is made to enable the transition to electric vehicles across the UK, according to a new study.

The research, carried out by the University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Energy Policy supported by SP Energy Networks, examined the wider impacts of the extended and substantial investment in network upgrades required to enable 99% electric vehicle (EV) uptake by 2050 in the UK. It shows that the transition to EVs through to 2050 could deliver an additional 30,000 FTE roles across the UK, an increase of 0.16% GDP per annum as well as an increase in wages (+0.1%).

The majority of jobs created will be in the network, construction and service sector supply chains. Many of the roles created will be related to EV manufacturing, from developers of bodywork to delivery drivers for the companies producing EV parts.

Accelerating the uptake of EVs will be crucial in reducing the emissions given off by petrol and diesel cars and help meet the UK Government’s Net Zero targets, says the report.

Investment will be required to ensure the infrastructure can be put in place to support the increase in EV drivers expected in the coming years to help meet these targets.

Scott Mathieson, Director of Network Planning and Regulation at SP Energy Networks, said: “Increased uptake of electric vehicles can lead to economic prosperity with sustained benefits to the UK economy.

“Investment in upgrades to the electricity network to enable this EV transition can create up to 30,000 new full-time, high-quality jobs and will have an immediate and sustained positive effect on GDP. Our work is far more than just keeping the lights on. Investing in EV infrastructure and adoption of EVs will help shift a post-COVID 19 economy onto a pathway for a green economic recovery.”

CAPSTONE TURBINE WINS A 1.2 MW ORDER FOR TWO C600 SIGNATURE SERIES (C600S) MICROTURBINES Capstone Turbine Corporation has received an order for two natural gas-fueled C600 Signature Series (C600S) microturbines for CEMACON SA a leading manufacturer of construction materials which includes bricks, ceramic blocks, plywood and mineral powders. Servelect, Capstone’s exclusive distributor in Romania won the 1.2 MW order, with an estimated commission date of February 2021.

“This new 1.2 MW contract is continued proof of the ongoing rebound we are experiencing from the energy efficiency markets in Europe. In the last 60 days, we have seen significant product and service wins from the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia and now Romania as businesses in Europe return to work following the COVID-19 pandemic,” comments Darren Jamison, President and Chief Executive Officer of Capstone Turbine Corporation.

“Servelect is an ESCO (Energy Services Company) specialised in offering energy efficiency solutions in Romania as the country endeavors to become more energy efficient in order to make a positive impact on its people and the environment,” added Mr. Jamison.

Currently, in Europe, cogeneration supplies 11% of the electricity and 15% of the heating demand. Using a single fuel source, Capstone microturbines can be easily integrated to capture thermal energy produced from the clean exhaust to provide a significant economic advantage to end-users, says the company.

1.5-MW GEORGIA TECH MICROGRID PROJECT READY FOR OPERATION IN ATLANTA DATA CENTRE A newly-developed microgrid will provide emergency, islanding and research learning power for a developing data-tech neighborhood in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Announced last month, the Tech Square Microgrid addition to the ATL1 data centre was financed by the owner DataBank.

The 1.5-MW capacity system was developed by a partnership including utility Georgia Power, parent company Southern Co.’s R&D division, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and DataBank.

The microgrid relies on three power resources: a dual-fuel gas and diesel generator, energy cells and battery storage. It offers backup power in case of power failure and a standalone source which can help during costly peak load periods.

“The microgrid project will give us a better understanding of the resiliency, sustainability, and cost of microgrids to help develop emerging energy solutions to better serve our customers now and in the future,” explains Alan Goldin, project manager at Georgia Power.

IN BRIEF RWE INSTALLS FOUNDATIONS AND CABLES FOR 857MW OFFSHORE WIND FARM IN UK German utility RWE has completed undersea work on the 857MW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm in the UK. The company installed 90 turbine foundations and two 50km-long power export cables.

RWE owns the majority of the wind farm, and plans to bring the wind farm online in the first quarter of 2022. It will have the capacity to power more than 800,000 UK homes.

In a statement, RWE said the installation was achieved within the schedule, despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Titon Knoll lies over 32km off the Lincolnshire coast. The owners are RWE (59%), J-Power (25%) and Kansai Electric Power (16%).

AZELIO SIGNS MOU WITH ATRIA POWER FOR 65MW IN INDIA - PROJECT COMBINES ENERGY STORAGE UNITS WITH COOLING AND WATER DESALINATION TECHNOLOGIES Swedish energy storage company Azelio and India’s Atria Power have signed a key Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on installing over 65 MW capacity of Azelio’s energy storage until 2025 in India. The agreement is Azelio’s first in the country, a market with significant potential for renewable energy solutions in off-grid areas.

Atria Power intends to use Azelio’s technology for storing energy to deliver both electricity and heat. By combining Azelio’s energy storage units with cooling and water desalination technologies, Atria will offer zero emission electricity, potable water, and cooling for rural villages and communities in India.

The MoU frameworks a collaboration over 65 MW until 2025, starting with small scale commercial installations of 100 kW in 2021, followed by installations of larger scale with an expected total of 12 MW in 2023, 18 MW in 2024 and 35 MW in 2025. Atria aims to expand its business offering in the Indian market as a project developer and system integrator of energy projects using Azelio’s technology.

Atria Power is an integrated energy solutions provider, evaluating energy efficiency, energy consumption and energy purchasing for its customers. By combining investments in technology with tailor-made service offerings, Atria Power offers services beyond those of a commodity supplier of renewable energy.

JFE STEEL PICKS GT26 CCGT FOR UPGRADE PROJECT AT POWER PLANT

JFE Steel Corp. has awarded GE with a contract to upgrade the existing GT26 MXL2 unit at Chiba. GE will install the HE (High Efficiency) upgrade for the GT26, which the company calls the most advanced performance improvements for an F-class combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT).

“We are proud to be building on the strength of our long-standing relationship with JFE to provide the most advanced technologies to power communities in Japan,” said Ramesh Singaram, President and CEO of GE Gas Power in Asia. “We look forward to continuing our successful single-service provider support of JFE in meeting their gas plant as-a-system needs.”

The two companies have been working together for 15 years. JFE is focusing on modernizing its aging infrastructure via improvements to power output and efficiency, while Japan’s electricity sector is experiencing a decline in demand.

Two years ago, GE upgraded JFE’s GT26 gas turbine in Chiba with the MXL2 package, adding up to 60 MW of potential capacity. This year, JFE decided to implement GE’s latest GT26 HE technology to continue to improve Chiba power plant’s performance, profitability and output at varying levels of load.

“Our GT26 HE solution represents an innovative milestone in the evolution of GE’s gas power technology. By combining technologies from both F- and H-Class fleets, we are helping to improve JFE’s competitive position in the Japanese energy marketplace,” said Amit Kulkarni, Head of Large Block Utility Product Segment, GE Gas Power.

In an effort to increase the performance of the gas turbines, Camfil Power Systems was asked recently to optimise the existing filtration system for three paper factories.

Several paper companies were involved in managing factories where they operated 44MW gas turbines with high availability requirements (8500 hours/year).

Camfil’s role was to find a technical solution to decreasing the total filtration system dP (pressure drop) to achieve more power output for essentially the same fuel consumption as well as extending filter lifetime. Other advantages of the solution were to involve less time and effort required for filter replacement and hiigher engine protection and availability.

by Camfil were located in coastal conditions,where air quality can be challenging.

Camfil conducted several site surveys to recommend an optimal air filter solution to enhance the performance of the engines.

Based on environmental and operational conditions, the OEM and customer decided to upgrade the existing system to a 2-stage static filter solution. Camfil’s filter technology has since produced savings for the end user in terms of maintenance and operating costs, as well as superior engine protection and air cleanliness. IN BRIEF INNOVENT PARTNERS WITH SHARP FOR PHOTOVOLTAIC PROJECTS Sharp Energy Solutions Europe, one of the world’s largest photovoltaic manufacturers, has partnered with wind project developer innoVent Planungs GmbH & Co. KG for photovoltaic projects-business.

The collaboration includes “EEG”eligible projects developed up to 10MWp. One particular focus is on projects involving power purchase agreements (PPA) of 100MWp and larger.

5 MW H2 ELECTROLYZER FOR DOUGLAS COUNTY PUD, USA Cummins will provide a 5 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer which will provide renewable hydrogen for the Douglas County Public Utility District (Douglas County PUD) in Washington, USA. This will be the largest and first of its kind in use by a public utility in the United States, according to the company. Expected to be operational in 2021, the new renewable hydrogen facility allows the Douglas County PUD to manufacture commercial hydrogen.

The PEM electrolyzer system takes the excess renewable energy and through a chemical reaction splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Cummins said the electrolyzer technology provides a means to address one of the largest dilemmas in the renewable energy industry — how to store the energy when it’s not in demand.

VALMET TO SUPPLY OPERATOR TRAINING SIMULATOR TO ETHOSENERGY IN BATON ROUGE, LA,USA Valmet has signed a five-year agreement with EthosEnergy to provide an operator training program that includes a site-specific Valmet Training Simulator for the Louisiana Station plant in Baton Rouge, LA, United States.

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the second quarter 2020. The value of the order has not yet been disclosed. The first delivery will take place during the fourth quarter of 2020.

“Our units operate 24 hours a day providing electricity and steam to local industry and nearby communities. With a complex control system that includes multiple levels of redundancy, we needed a training tool that could help our operators with event management in response to many different situations. We chose to partner with Valmet on an operator training program that includes a site-specific simulator because of their demonstrated experience with our other projects over years of collaboration,” says Ronnie Morris, Operations Manager, EthosEnergy.

“Louisiana Station has been a key customer for us for more than thirty years. Our great partnership with their team was a key element in realizing this project. A one-week site study performed by our teams from North America and Sweden with the Louisiana Station team nailed down the scope and convinced our customer,” says Mike Marich, Sales Manager Automation, Valmet.

Valmet’s delivery consists of a customised Valmet Training Simulator for the entire power plant including turbines, heat recovery steam generators, conventional boilers, and steam turbines.

Instead, major restructuring plans for MAN Energy Solutions have been outlined.

An official release says: “The Volkswagen Group supports the agreements outlined in the paper, expecting that the necessary prerequisites for implementation will be successfully finalized by the end of 2020.

“Once this has happened Volkswagen will suspend its plans to sell MAN Energy Solutions until the finalization of the restructuring efforts, which include job

cuts, reduction of personnel cost and the relocation of products to foreign production centres.

This will apply at least until the end of 2024.

“The Volkswagen Group has further agreed that the company will remain part of the group until at least the end of 2026 if it achieves a profitability target of 9% EBIT on a consistent basis by that date.”

DELTA INTRODUCES MODULARISED DATA CENTRE SOLUTION FOR 5G AND IOT EDGE COMPUTING

IN BRIEF NEW POWER PLANT IN FAROE ISLANDS MAN Energy Solutions has completed the expansion of the ‘Sund’ power plant near Tórshavn, the Faroese capital, and successfully handed the plant over to energy supplier, Elfelagið SEV. With this, four MAN 9L51/60 engines have been successfully integrated into the islands’ hybrid energy-system and will complement the existing power station with an additional 37 MW power generation, as well as district heating capacity.

To supply electricity to the almost 52,000 islanders, SEV relies on an intelligent combination of renewable energy sources, storage solutions and power-plant engines to ensure grid stability. Danish power-plant specialist, Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC), was primarily responsible for construction of the Sund power plant.

Delta has launched SmartNode data centre infrastructure solution to provide flexible power system and cooling designs for quick deployment of versatile implementation in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Telecommunications operators, enterprises, data centre planners, colocation providers and cloud services can use this newly-designed Tier II-rated (Tier III optional) data centre infrastructure to rapidly scale edge computing capacity and provide the infrastructure necessary for IoT as well as low latency applications. HONDA MARKETING ITS NEW RANGE OF CO-MINDER GEN-SETS Honda Power Equipment has launched its COMinder carbon-monoxide detection technology across its full line of portable generators.

The company is adding three models - the EG2800i Economy Series unit, along with the EB2800i and EB6500 Industrial Series models - to the lineup of CO-Minder equipped gensets it has just launched.

By 2021 all Honda portable generators will incorporate the CO-Minder technology, the company said.

The Honda CO-Minder system is designed to continuously measure carbon monoxide levels in the air near the generator and automatically shuts down the unit before detected CO reaches a dangerous level.

The technology uses a fast-reacting sensor which continuously monitors for carbon-monoxide near the generator and if the sensor detects a CO level at or exceeding 800 ppm at a given time, or an average

of 400 ppm for 10 minutes (as per Portable Generators Manufacturers’ Association [PGMA] G300-2018 standards), it triggers the generator to shut down automatically.

IN BRIEF SAIPEM TO DEVELOP A WIND FARM IN THE ADRIATIC SEA Saipem will co-develop a wind farm in the Adriatic Sea off the coast of Ravenna.

The company recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AGNES, a company which develops renewable energy projects in the Adriatic Sea. Another co-signatory is QINT’X, an Italian company specialising in renewable energy, specifically solar, wind and hydroelectric energy and e-mobility (electric vehicles). This project will involve the installation of 56 turbines on fixed foundations on the seabed at two different sites: one located more than 8 nautical miles from the shore, and the other more than 12 miles from the shore. The overall installed power will be approximately 450 MW.

TWO 100MW BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE PROJECTS HAVE BEEN INITIATED IN TEXAS US-based Broad Reach Power has started work on two 100-MW100-MWh greenfield battery storage projects.

The company will invest more than $100 million in two projects based in Mason and Williamson counties in Texas. Once online in 2021, the plants will operate alongside the company’s portfolio of utility-scale battery storage plants in Texas near Houston and Odessa.

Broad Reach has additional plans to expand its storage portfolio in Texas, including several large endeavors. The company is also replicating its dual greenfield and acquisition approach in California, Montana and other western markets where the company has 700 MW of projects with signed interconnection agreements.

“The grid in Texas is continuing to transform rapidly with the addition of more wind and solar generation. While these resources are desirable because they reduce costs and emissions, they add more variation and risk to an already challenging real-time balancing goal,” said Broad Reach Power Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer Steve Vavrik.

IN BRIEF TAECOM DELIVERS NEW 740-MW CCGT WEST RIVERSIDE TO ALLIANT ENERGY EPC contractor AECOM has officially handed over the 730MW facility in Beloit, Wisc., to site owner Alliant Energy. The combined cycle gas turbine plant has been designed to generate enough power for about 500,000 homes.

The West Riverside Energy Center gasfired power plant construction project has taken three years to build and is now fully operational.

“The West Riverside Energy Center now brings reliable, cost-effective energy to thousands of homes and businesses,” comments Randy Wotring, AECOM’s chief operating officer. “We are proud to deliver this next-generation, highly-efficient project to Alliant Energy and support communities throughout the State of Wisconsin.”

AECOM’s role involved providing the design, supply, installation and startup services for the 2×1 CCGT plant.

More than 1,000 workers were employed during the construction phase. The new CCGT plant produces half of the carbon-dioxide, two-thirds less nitrogen and 99% percent less sulphur and mercury than a coal-fired station, reports the company. The surrounding site also include a solar installation.

LINDT CHOCOLATE SAVES ELECTRICAL ENERGY THROUGH KEY ‘ZERO EMISSION’ STRATEGIES A report from Lindt&Sprüngli, the company behind the famous Lindt Chocolate shows that thanks to power-saving strategies its subsidiary Lindt&Sprüngli USA managed to lower its kilowatt-hour consumption by 5% between 2017 and 2018, while at the same time producing 17% more chocolate.

This reduction of 2.1 million kWh is equal to the electricity used by 1,720 households in one month. In addition to this, Lindt &Sprüngli USA launched a three-year strategic energy partnership with energy supplier Eversource. The partnership is aimed at lowering electricity consumption at its location in Stratham by almost 3.5 million kWh per year.

A spokesman explained: “Energy is required for the different production steps for making chocolate, such as heating, cooling, and transport. Greenhouse gas emissions are created during all of these processes.

“Our goal is to lower our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions per metric ton of chocolate produced by an average of 2% per year. Furthermore, we intend to increase the percentage of renewable energy within our overall energy consumption. We regularly undertake a detailed analysis of the existing systems and future investments to identify potential energy savings.

“The factories in Italy and France are ISO 14001 (environmental management) certified, and Lindt &Sprüngli Germany is ISO 51001 (energy efficiency) certified.”

All of the Lindt factories worldwide are pursuing the goal of further decreasing their energy consumption. The findings and results from local projects are collected and exchanged on a global level to pass on proven concepts and procedures. The subsidiaries have currently implemented a variety of energy-saving projects.

For example, one Lindt&Sprüngli company - Caffarel - uses 100% renewable energy.

The “Zero Emissions” project is at the core of Caffarel’s commitment to meeting all of its energy needs with renewable sources. Caffarel achieved this ambitious goal in January 2018. The energy mix used by Caffarel combines electricity from hydroelectric plants (45%) with district heating fuelled by biomass (40%). The remaining energy needed for the hazelnut roaster and the steam used in production (15%) is supplied by biogas. Achieving this ambitious goal was possible thanks to close co-operation between Caffarel and local energy suppliers.

DOOSAN HEAVY INDUSTRIES UNVEILS NEW STRATEGY TO DEVELOP & INSTALL COMBINED-CYCLE POWER PLANTS Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has signed a memorandum of understanding with Korean Western Power to develop and install next-generation combined-cycle power plants.

The company strategy behind the deal is to further penetrate domestic markets and then expand overseas.

South Korea-based Doosan Heavy announced earlier this year that it was deploying the first Korean-made gas turbine for the Gimbo CHP plant in Gyeonggi Province.

Doosan feels its 500 MW turbine could eventually compete on a world scale with the traditional ‘big four’ turbine makers: Ansaldo, Siemens, GE and Mitsubishi.

“With the signing of this MOU, we will be able to produce even more tangible results by combining Korean Western Power’s commitment to promoting growth of Korea’s gas turbine industry with Doosan’s efforts to support this,” said Yeonin Jung, chief operating officer of Doosan Heavy. We also aim to contribute to promoting the gas turbine industry by establishing a virtuous system of mutual growth with our partners in Korea.”

PROVIDING 14 GAS ENGINES FOR A HYBRID PROJECT IN AUSTRALIA

larke Energy, INNIO’s distributor and service partner for Jenbacher gas engines, will provide 14 Jenbacher J624 gas engines to improve the efficiency and flexibility of Alinta Energy’s gas-fired Newman Power Station in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

The 60 MW of gas-fired generation will support Alinta Energy’s Pilbara operations, including the Chichester Solar Gas Hybrid project (comprising 60 MWe of solar photovoltaic generation and 60 kms of transmission line), when complete.

Clarke Energy will deliver the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) for the new gas fired power generation facility which will uSe the Jenbacher J624 generators, each with a capacity of 4.41 MW, providing a total capacity of 61.67MWe. The company saYS the 4.4MWe engines are well suited to this application providing a flexible combination of turn-down, efficiency and the rapid load response required for integration with solar.

The Jenbacher J624 gas engines are also more compact than others, which will help to reduce the risks of working at heights present with larger models.

“Safety is number one for us and Clarke Energy has a solid track record of safely providing high quality solar and gas fired power integration solutions,” said Alinta Energy’s Executive Director Merchant Energy, Ken Woolley. “Their technical expertise will also be critical to help us deliver on a very exciting program of work in the region.”

Following completion of the EPC works, Clarke Energy will operate and maintain the facility for Alinta Energy under a long-term contract utilising their team of

factory-trained service technicians and operators.

ne of the UK’s most remote research stations has developed an innovative way to power essential experiments, using a microturbine to gather weather and climate data throughout the dark and freezing Antarctic winter months.

To ensure continuous power to the station, even in these extreme conditions, the microturbine must be fully tested to ensure that it operates effectively under load.

Halley V! Research Station, which is located on the Brunt Ice Shelf in the Antarctic and operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), was previously manned year-round. However, for the last three years, it has needed to be a summer-only station, due to uncertainty over the stability of nearby ice.

Maintaining power to critical systems With power critical to maintaining observations remotely, BAS opted to install a microturbine specifically designed to power the station’s automated instrumentation.

The microturbine runs at 70,000 rpm, 24-hours-a day, generating a constant 9 kilowatts of power - enough to operate about 80% of Halley’s normal experiment schedule without human intervention.

The Halley VI research station is located on the 150-metre-thick ice shelf with temperatures that drop to -56° Celsius. In such extreme conditions, and with no one on-site to maintain or repair equipment, ensuring that the microturbine is fully tested prior to deployment is an absolutely critical step in the process.

Power continuity and the role of load bank testing To meet this need, BAS procured Crestchic to supply a load bank - a device that is used to create an electrical load that imitates the operational or ‘real’ load that a microturbine would use in normal operational conditions.

The load bank is used to test the system to ensure that it is fit for purpose and that it will operate as required.

Dr. Thomas Barningham, the project manager on the Halley Automation Project, explains: “Without doing load testing, we cannot be sure the microturbine and all of its periphery control systems are fit to be deployed in Antarctica. Providing an unmanned power system is critical to maintaining our long term data sets, for example the Dobson photospectrometer, which we use to monitor the Ozone Layer, was forced offline in the

winters of 2018 and 2017 because there was no-one present to mind it and no power system - it was the first time we’ve lost data since the 1950s.

“The installation of the microturbine enables us to continue our work and monitor it remotely - making the testing process critical to our success.”

The system also opens up opportunities for experimentation in other conditions, Dr. Barningham continues: “Making long term observations of the environment in the deep field of Antarctica is difficult.

“We are limited by the brief weather windows during the summer months and often have to leave simple low power systems that can collect useful but limited data over the winter months.

“Having high power automated systems that can run unattended for several months without intervention, such as this, opens up the opportunity for more data heavy,

and hence more elucidating forms of instrumentation to be deployed in these remote locations.”

As well as using the load banks to test the efficiency of the microturbine, Crestchic has previously supplied Halley VI with a 200KW resistive only load bank which was used to test and maintain generators at the station during the summer months.

By employing this technology, BAS can ensure that the station does not lose power. With no connection to the grid, a team of people living on-site, freezing temperatures, and critical scientific data at stake, load banks are critical to ensuring ongoing power to the station.

Modular Power Plants Supplies Residents of Malaya Sosnovka with Heat and Power In addition to the production facilities, the MKS Group of Companies is establishing a modular power plant (MPP) in the Industrial Innovation Park in order to supply the residents of Malaya Sosnovka with heat and power. Vertiv, a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, has launched Vertiv Liebert OFC, a range of oil-free turbocor compressor chillers, in partnership with Geoclima. The family of air-cooled and water-cooled chillers will initially be available in Europe, reports the company.

n exclusive technology partnership with Geoclima, a company specialising in innovative cooling systems with low environmental impact, has enabled Vertiv to build on existing world-class chiller technology and a wellestablished track record around the globe, says the company.

The Liebert OFC design has been optimised to utilise low GWP refrigerants including R1234ze and to provide high energy efficiency. Other refrigerants including R513A and R134a are also available in the range.

OHLER Power Systems is launching several new models of 60Hz and 50Hz gaseous-powered industrial generators, ranging from 300 to 500 kW, targeting mission critical, industrial, and commercial applications.

The new REZXD generator set lineup features an 18.3 litre, V-10 engine powering the 300kW and 350kW models, while the 21.9 litre, V-12 engine powers the 400kW, 450kW and 500kW models.

The generators’ turbocharged engines integrate durable cast iron cylinder heads with forged steel crankshafts and are optimised for power generation to maximize performance.

These generators provide users with the flexibility to select the appropriate gas fuel source for a specific application including natural gas (primary) and LP (secondary), and feature a dual fuel option with a patent-pending fuel reset box.

This dual fuel system enables the generator to switch automatically from natural gas to LP, and when sensing that LP is low it reverts back to natural gas.

There is also a switch on the reset box that allows users to switch from one fuel to the other manually without operation disruption. For ease of installation, a fuel inlet connection is provided on the skid wall along with an oil drain connection.

COMPLETE HYBRID ENERGY STORAGE PROJECT TO SERVE THE DUTCH FREQUENCY CONTAINMENT RESERVE MARKET

L

eclanché SA, one of the world’s leading energy storage companies, has - together with S4 Energy - completed and handed over an innovative hybrid energy storage project for energy management provider S4 Ancillary Services in Almelo, The Netherlands.

The project is an extension of an earlier pilot system created by Leclanché and S4 Energy. The overall system, now in operation, is a combination of Leclanché lithium-ion battery storage technology coupled with S4 Energy‘s flywheel storage to provide primary control power for frequency stabilization to TenneT, the local transmission grid operator.

The combination with the fast-responsive flywheels reduces the energy throughput and amount of cycles of the Li-ion batteries and ensures an improved usage profile and longer system lifetime.

Leclanché’s scope of supply and services in this project was the turnkey delivery of the battery energy storage system (BESS), the battery inverters and the energy management system (EMS) for monitoring and control of the battery system.

The 8.8 MW capacity battery system provides 7.12 MWh of stored renewable energy. Coupled with six of S4 Energy’s proprietary KINEXT flywheel storage systems which deliver 3MW of power, it will help improve the reliability of the grid, protecting it against the fluctuations caused by the intermittency of renewable energy generation.

Pairing flywheels with a state-of-the-art BESS will help prolong the lifetime of the batteries to a minimum of 15-years and bring additional value to TenneT. “We believe that the combination of these two technologies provides a clear advantage for enhanced ancillary services and the further integration of renewables into the grid,” said Daniel Fohr, Vice President System Engineering, Leclanché.

An important building block in many of S4 ENERGY’S solutions is its proprietary KINEXT technology, which represents a huge step forward in energy storage.

KINEXT units can store large amounts of energy at very high efficiency rates (92%) with an exceptionally short response time (within milliseconds) and a very high power-to-energy ratio (up to 100).

KINEXT units contain a flywheel with an exceptionally high mass (5,000 kg) and large diameter, which spins relatively slowly (1,800 rpm) and reaches a maximum speed of around 950 km/h.

The resulting efficiency enables storing energy with very low stand-by losses and long idle times. KINEXT also offers a long lifetime, low operating costs and easy maintenance, says S4 Energy.

Combined with S4 Energy’s proprietary software, KINEXT units offer great flexibility.

The power-to-energy ratio can be adjusted per unit, tailoring it to a client’s specific needs. If necessary, a KINEXT unit can provide more than 1 MW of power.

HELPING THE AGNEW GOLD MINE TO SWITCH TO RENEWABLES

A

Saft lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery energy storage system (BESS) is playing a key role in helping Gold Field’s Agnew mine make the switch from fossil fuels to wind and solar power.

In Saft’s first project for EDL, the BESS has been installed within a hybrid renewable microgrid with an installed capacity of 56 MW, which is the first to incorporate wind power on a large scale at an Australian mine. Energy storage is critical to enable the EDL microgrid to maintain power quality as it integrates an increasing level of volatile and unpredictable wind and solar energy.

“The Agnew hybrid renewable microgrid was completed on 1 May 2020 and has proven to be a great success - under the right weather conditions, the microgrid has delivered up to 85 percent of the site’s power requirements with renewable energy,” says EDL Chief Executive Officer James Harman.

“The battery energy storage system is critical to this success. That’s why we selected Saft’s Li-ion technology - it offered a complete solution with a proven track record. We’d be happy to work with Saft again.”

The Agnew Gold Mine is an underground operation located 1,000 kilometers northeast of Perth in Western Australia. The site covers over 600 square kilometers and has the capacity to process 1.3 million tonnes of ore a year.

The remote off-grid location means that the Agnew site has to generate its own electricity. Gold Fields is committed to sustainable and innovative power solutions. It engaged EDL in a 10-year agreement to build and operate Australia’s largest hybrid renewable energy microgrid.

The first project phase involved the construction of a 4 MW solar farm and a 21 MW gas/diesel engine power plant.

This was followed by five wind turbines for 18 MW of generation, a microgrid controller and Saft’s 13 MW/4 MWh energy storage system.

The turnkey BESS at the Agnew mine comprises six of Saft’s Intensium® Max+ 20M 20-foot containers together with a power conversion system (PCS), transformer and MV switchgear installed in three 40-foot containers.

SYNCHRONOUS RELUCTANCE (SYNRM) MOTORS MEET IE5 CLASS

T

o meet the growing global demand for improved energy efficiency, ABB’s synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motors is set to meet the IE5 ultra-premium energy efficiency class defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The IE5 ultra-premium SynRM motors offer up to 50 per cent lower energy losses and lower energy consumption than the commonly used IE2 induction motors. ABB first introduced SynRM technology in 2011 and case studies in industrial installations have demonstrated energy savings of up to 25 percent, depending on the application.

ADE JOINS GREEN FINANCE INSTITUTE’S ZERO CARBON HEATING TASKFORCE Action group will develop a portfolio of innovative financial solutions that unlock investment. The ADE and a number of ADE members are delighted to be joining the taskforce.

Heating and hot water in our homes together account for almost 40 percent of the UK’s energy consumption and 20 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. To meet the UK Government’s legally binding net-zero 2050 targets, a near complete decarbonisation of our heating systems is required.

Launched by the Green Finance Institute as part of its Coalition for the Energy Efficiency of Buildings (CEEB), the Zero Carbon Heating Taskforce convenes a focused group of CEEB members from financial services, local and national government, the energy and construction industries, academia and civil society.

They are joined by experts from the heating sector, to design, launch and scale the financing mechanisms needed to enable the rapid adoption of zerocarbon heating technologies in individual buildings and across entire districts of the UK. The Zero Carbon Heating Taskforce will conduct a focussed review to identify the barriers and enablers to investment into low-carbon heating across the UK housing market – including for on and off gas grid homes, new builds and district heating networks.

The taskforce will leverage these findings to co-design and launch a series of new financial products and non-financial enablers to help channel investment into the sector.

It follows the same action-focussed strategy as the CEEB, which launched in December 2019 and has since established the case for retrofitting buildings to high energy efficiency standards, analysed the current investment barriers to take-up, and used its combined knowledge of the finance and building sectors to generate a portfolio of 21 financial demonstration projects.

These projects reflect commercial, scalable and mobilise capital flows towards the retrofit of UK homes to improved energy performance standards.

The Taskforce is supported by the transformational policy advisors, E3G.

ACE LAUNCHES KICKSTART SCHEME - COMPANIES, NO MATTER THEIR SIZE, URGED TO JOIN EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMME FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced the Kickstart Scheme, a new £2 billion funded incentive to encourage young people into the workplace.

The scheme will fund new six month job placements for young people who are currently on universal credit and ‘at risk’ of longterm unemployment.

The scheme usually requires a minimum of 30 applicants.

However, ACE through TAC is acting as a facilitating body and as such can collectively make applications on members’ behalf, no matter their size.

ACE or EIC members interested in participating are encouraged to contact Kimberly Murphy, Apprenticeship and Skills Manager at ACE via email to discuss the opportunity in more detail.

Commenting on the announcement, Kimberly Murphy said: “We’re delighted to offer members access to the Government’s Kickstart Scheme. Thanks to our work even the smallest SME can get involved in the programme which offers a great opportunity to help young people back into the workplace.
