Did you know where the largest synchronous electrical grid - by connected power - in the world is located? It’s Europe. The synchronous grid of Continental Europe (also known as Continental Synchronous Area; formerly known as the UCTE grid) is interconnected as a single phase-locked 50 Hz mains frequency electricity grid which supplies over 400 million customers in 24 countries, including most of the European Union.

However, when it comes to identifying the premium locations for the generation of renewable electricity these tend to be either offshore, coastal or where grid transfer capacity is low. Energy production from renewable sources also greatly depends on local weather conditions.

A more flexible, yet robust, transmission grid in Europe may be instrumental to interlink distant electricity markets and take advantage of the low-carbon resources elsewhere.

What is really needed is a transcontinental higher transfer capacity system to transport large EUROPE HAS THE amounts of electricity over long LARGEST SYNCHRONOUS distances. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technologies, due ELECTRICAL GRID (BY to their lower losses and smaller environmental impact, promise to CONNECTED POWER) IN be the cornerstones of a global power grid.

THE WORLD. Europe has been at the forefront of HVDC research, development and deploymentfor sixty years now. The synchronous grid of Continental Europe covers territory of the ENTSO-E Continental Europe regional group and some neighbouring countries not involved in the ENTSO-E. The synchronous grid includes part or all of Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark (western part), France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland as a members of the ENTSO-E Continental Europe regional group.

Most of the HVDC projects in Europe are point-to-point with specific parameters meeting the local conditions (grid connection, voltage levels, capacity). Other countries and continents worldwide have lately emerged as growing markets for HVDC technology. In particular, China, although lacking a proper (interconnected) HVDC grid, has in the last two decades built imore than 30 HVDC lines. Many of these HVDC links are built (or are in building phase) as standardized systems in terms of parameters (nine systems of 500 kV / 3000 MW, 11 systems of 800 kV / 6400 MW). Clearly the destiny of national power grid systems is to unite and not to divide - to become pan-global and not merely confined to one continent.

CHP IN THE CANADIAN ARCTIC Frontier Power Products were commissioned by Horizon to design and build a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system to replace the previous independent 400 kW gensets, which had no heat recovery system. EJ Bowman proposed a solution comprising three shell and tube heat exchangers to cool and recover heat from the engines jacket water, plus three exhaust gas heat exchangers to recover the high levels of waste heat generated from genset engine exhaust streams.

10MW RENEWABLE ENERGY PRODUCED USING BIOGAS FROM BRAZILIAN LANDFILL Aggreko has begun work as part of a contract with Brazilian energy company EVA Energia for a 10 MW renewable power solution using landfill gas.

Aggreko will deliver a complete system, producing power from biogas derived from two locations: Seropédica (Rio de Janeiro State), the largest landfill site in Latin America, and Mauá (São Paulo State). Aggreko will deploy a turnkey solution, comprising of a total of eight 1.25 MW generators across the two sites, providing a total of 10 MW power.

POWERLINK WILL CONNECT EUROPE AND ASIA VIA DARDANELLES III & IZMIT GULF CROSSING A contract worth a total of around €140 million has been awarded by the Turkish utility TEIAS to the Prysmian Group for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of two high-voltage submarine power cable links.

The links will be between Europe and Asia across the Izmit Gulf in Asia.

Completion of both contracts is expected to take place during 2023.

The first project – Dardanelles III – includes the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the third high-voltage submarine power cable link between Europe and Asia across the Dardanelles strait in Turkey. The cable link consists of a double circuit with a rating of 1000 MW for each leg over a total route of 4.2 km – 4 km submarine and 0.2 km on land.

The second project – Izmit Gulf Crossing – includes the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a high-voltage submarine power cable link that will be installed nearby the Osman Gazi Bridge, in the Izmit Gulf, Turkey. The cable consists of a double circuit with a rating of 1000 MW for leg and covers a total route of 14 km – 4 km submarine and 10 km on land.

These projects will complement work done by Prysmian for TEIAS in past years (Dardanelles II and Dardanelles I), and together are expected to ensure a reliable and cost-effective energy supply.

WARTSILA MAKES DELIVERY FOR US-BASED 40 MW / 80 MWH ENERGY STORAGE PROJECT WITH RWE RENEWABLES Wärtsilä recently made an engineered equipment delivery (EEQ) of a 40 MW / 80 MWh DC-coupled solar plus storage system to the Hickory Park Solar project in Georgia, USA. The owner of the project is RWE Renewables, one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies. The Wärtsilä system will enable a subsidiary of RWE Renewables, Hickory Park Solar, LLC, to sell nearly 200 MW of generation from the solar PV panels to Georgia Power Company.

Wärtsilä’s sophisticated GEMS Digital Energy Platform will control the entire hybrid plant, comprising close to 200 MW solar PV and a 80 MWh GridSolv Quantum energy storage system. GEMS monitors, synchronises, and optimises generation assets at increments of 100 milliseconds, using machine learning and historic and real-time data analytics to calibrate the type of generation needed at any specific time, all under a single portfolio.

Wärtsilä’s IntelliBidder auto-bidding solution allows Hickory Park Solar to provide Georgia Power a day-ahead firming solar plus storage profile, which will improve the predictability of the intermittent generation. The cloud-based IntelliBidder uses machine learning and algorithms based on automated and forecasted data, taking real-time trading and combining it with a smart control platform which provides value-based asset management and portfolio optimisation.

In addition to GEMS, the Hickory Park Solar project will see the deployment of GridSolv Quantum, Wärtsilä’s latest next-generation energy storage system (ESS).

H2-READY: MAN GAS ENGINES ENABLE HYDROGEN USE IN POWER PLANTS MAN Energy Solutions has announced that its gaspowered, four-stroke engines are ‘H2-ready’ and operable in stationary mode with a hydrogen content of up to 25% by volume in a gasfuel mix.

As such, within the power-plant segment, the company’s MAN 35/44G TS, 51/60G and 51/60G TS gas engines are now designated as H2-ready and capable of exploiting hydrogen to further reduce CO2 emissions.

This hydrogen-combusting capability enables MAN gas engines to meet Level B requirements of the European Engine Power Plants Association’s (EUGINE) H2-readiness standard.

With Power-to-X fuels such as synthetic natural gas (SNG), MAN engines can already be operated in a completely climate-neutral way.

“Flexible and decentralised, gas-fired power plants will play a decisive role for a secure power-supply

on the pathway towards 100% renewable energy,” said Dr Gunnar Stiesch, Head of Engineering Engines at MAN Energy Solutions.

“The CO2 emissions of these power plants can be further reduced by mixing the fuel gas with hydrogen.

Green hydrogen is still a scarce commodity and therefore our engines offer operators full flexibility within the scope of the admixture possible in the existing gas network. SHELL AND UNIPER IN JOINT HYDROGEN PROJECT Shell Gas & Power Developments B.V. and Uniper Hydrogen GmbH have signed an agreement to collaborate on a number of hydrogen-related projects in Europe.

At Shell’s Rheinland site work is ongoing to transform an existing refining asset into a state-of-the-art energy and chemicals park. Shell officially opened a 10MW PEM electrolyser, the largest of its kind in Europe, earlier this year and are working with partners to expand the capacity to 100MW. Uniper will further explore the supply of hydrogen from the existing Uniper production sites at Rotterdam and Wilhelmshaven to the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland locations at Wesseling and Godorf. Uniper will connect this to its power plant in Gelsenkirchen Scholven.

SIEMENS SUPPLIES HL-CLASS GAS TURBINE FOR KOMOTINI CCGT IN GREECE Siemens Energy has been contracted by Terna to supply a HL-class gas turbine to Greece for the first time. Installed in 1x1 configuration, it will power a new 788 MW combined-cycle unit in Komotini, northeast Greece, reducing emissions by up to 3.7 million tons per year compared to a coal power plant.

The CCGT will have an installed electrical capacity of 877 MW making it the world’s most powerful combined cycle power plant in a 1x1 configuration. The construction of the new plant is of strategic importance for Greece which will have an increasing demand for power from nonlignite sources as lignite fired units are gradually withdrawn from service.

The switch to a gas-fired power plant will reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by up to 3.7 million tons per year compared to a coal power plant. It will also reduce the environmental impact and increase the security of supply. Terna SA is building the entire plant for the project company Thermoilektriki Komotinis M.A.E. The company is owned in equal parts by Motor Oil Renewable Energy and GEK Terna. Commissioning of the plant is scheduled for mid-2024.

NATIONAL GRID ESO LAUNCHES ‘A WORLDFIRST’ PROGRAMME TO BUILD A DIGITAL REPLICA OF THE UK ENERGY LANDSCAPE Earlier this month the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) ilaunched ‘a world-first’ programme to build a digital replica of the entire UKenergy landscape, creating a virtual environment to share data, model and predict scenarios that support the decarbonisation of the energy system.

According to the creators, the Virtual Energy System will be a digital twin of the existing physical energy system, working in parallel to enable ‘an accessible, unified, real-time view of every part of the GB energy system.’

Fintan Slye, Executive Director of National Grid ESO told WIP: “Great Britain’s energy system is made up of multiple component parts which combine and interact to deliver the energy we need.Whilst the journey towards a carbon free future has already begun, if the UK is to meet its 2050 net zero target, it’s vital the whole energy industry works towards decarbonisation together.

“As we evolve and transition to a greener future, we’ll need to respond to a range of future challenges. And how we innovate and adapt the energy system will require a range of tools, which is where the Virtual Energy System comes in – a shared, digital national asset to help optimise the route to net zero.”

GE ON TRACK WITH 1.2 GIGAWATT EQUIPMENT DEAL IN MALAYSIA GE has begun delivering power equipment under the terms of a contract agreed with the (EPC) consortium of Posco Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. (POSCO), Mitsubishi Corp. and PEC Powercon Sdn. Bhd. GE is providing power generation equipment for the 1,200 megawatts (MW) Pulau Indah Power Plant, in Selangor, Malaysia.

COMBINED CYCLE PLANT CONTRACT IN UZBEKISTAN WON BY EDF CONSORTIUM 25-YEAR POWER-PURCHASE AGREEMENT ALSO SIGNED OFF A consortium of Électricité de France (EDF), Nebras Power and Sojitz Corporation has won a tender to build a combined cycle gas turbine power plant (CCGT) in the country’s Syrdarya region, reports Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy.

France- based EDF, Qatar-based infrastructure development company, Nebras and Japanese investment company, Sojitz will form a new corporation to enter a 25-year power purchase agreement with National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan to design, finance, build, operate and maintain the CCGT plant.

The 1,200–1,600MW combined cycle gas turbine power plant will have almost twice the efficiency of the the old generation fleet, resulting in more efficient usage of natural gas and decreased CO2 emissions. Alisher Sultanov, Energy Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, comments: “We have taken another significant step on the way to increased stability of energy supply. It is also a sign that Uzbekistan is a place where international capital can be employed with safety of investment and great growth prospects.”

The new Syrdarya CCGT thermal power plant is part of the country’s overall strategy to modernize outdated energy infrastructure and will decrease the carbon intensity of Uzbekistan’s gas usage.

The inland port is directly connected by road and rails to the Algiers Port, operating as a logistical centre for road haulage, part loads and storage sites.

A spokesman from Moteurs Baudouin commented: “Our 6M33G660/5e2 engine was used by our local distributor GMI Algérie in the assembly of the standby genset backing up the port’s activities providing 660 kVA. The 660 kVA diesel generator features a Baudouin engine.”

NIGERIA’S MAMUDA GROUP HAS PLANS TO UPGRADE ITS IN-HOUSE POWER CAPACITY TO 30MW WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF CLARKE ENERGY The Mamuda Group, one of the largest manufacturing groups in Northern Nigeria is ramping production and diversifying its product lines on the strength of their ability to generate their own power.

According to the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, over 40 percent of the cost of business of most manufacturing companies goes to power, therefore companies who can generate their own power at cost effective rates have a competitive edge.

“We already forecasted our power consumption for the near future and have decided to go for an in-house power generation plant that will help us to reduce the load on the grid so that others can benefit from it,” said Nemr Hammoud, Vice Chairman & COO, Mamuda Group of Companies.

The Mamuda Group currently has a 22MW power plant capacity which it is seeking to upscale to 30MW installed and maintained by Clarke Energy, a multinational specialist in engineering, installation, and maintenance of distributed power generation solutions. Hammoud said Clarke Energy designed the power solution from technical drawing, engine delivery, installation, commissioning and even maintenance of the equipment. “Clark Energy has been very competent and reliable by providing solutions to our energy problems,” he comments.

He said the benefits have been enormous, especially in cost savings which have made the company’s product competitive in the market. It has reduced their carbon emissions and guaranteed uninterrupted power which bodes well given the sensitive nature of the factory machines.

YORPOWER SUPPLIES 10 DIESEL GENERATORS TO WATER TREATMENT PROJECT IN ASIA This month UK-based YorPower has been finalising and testing 10 x Perkins Generators, ready to send out to a client in Southern Asia.

According to YorPower, the order came from a partnership developed with an indigenous local company it has been trading with historically for a number of years but only recently in a more substantial capacity. The YorPower dealer for the region helped to secure a prestigious Water Treatment project. A government-backed project which took three years to design and develop required a range of different generators to help backup and support the site in case of mains supply failure.

Jordan Kincaid, International Development Manager for Yorpower said: “We’ve been working alongside our dealer for 18 months on this scheme and are delighted to help them secure such a great project. It bodes well for the future and our brand in the Asian market.”

Jordan explains: “Even with delays & restrictions due to COVID, we were delighted to dispatch such a big order to our partners in Southern Asia. The order involved multiple stages of supplier vetting, the generator specification, requirements and facility for testing as well as experience in exporting and shipping of goods to the region.

“It was more complex than usual due to global logistics delays on generator components and parts, but we found solutions to deliver.”

He concludes: “Over the last week, we tested each of the gensets, which included fourhour load tests to assimilate various electrical loads applied and removed, alarm functionality, shutdown procedures, fuel consumption at different applied loads, noise levels and many other specified items to check.

Testing guarantees the units will perform to the specified levels and maximum performance for the diesel generators when required at site.

“Once tested, we loaded three full containers and a flat rack, all to be shipped out over 5,000 miles across the world. “

demand for cleaner power sources is boosting gas genset sales, finds Frost & Sullivan.

Stringent environmental regulations, declining gas prices, and increasing demand for flexible transmission of renewable power have sparked a growing interest in gas-powered generator sets in Europe, suggests recent analysis by Frost & Sullivan.

A recent suggests shows that the market revenue for gas gensets in Europe is expected to expand at a CAGR of 5.3%, from $307.2 million in 2018 to $441.6 million by 2025, while unit sales are set to increase at a CAGR of 3.2%, reaching 2,034 units by 2025.

GAS ENGINE SUPPLIES HIGH-YIELD GREENHOUSE FACILITIES WITH ENERGY AND FERTILIZER

T

he Belgian tomato producer Krikato is using a new, powerful MWM gas engine to operate its expanded greenhouse facilities. The MWM TCG 3020 V20 gas engine was installed by MWM Benelux B.V. and went live in June 2020. For Krikato, this was its second MWM gas engine used for the production of power, heat, and carbon for use as plant fertilizer.

In 2019, the Belgian vegetable producers delivered a total of 889,845 t to the market. At 270,135 t, tomatoes are among the top performers among the vegetables grown in Belgium (as of 2019). Thanks to the producers’ focus on innovation and efficiency, Belgian tomato production is very successful.

To boost the tomato production, Krikato expanded its greenhouse facilities from 1.2 ha to 1.7 ha. To ensure optimum operation of the greenhouse, the producer decided to deploy a second MWM gas engine in addition to the MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas engine already producing power and heat for the Krikato greenhouse since the establishment and go-live of the facilities back in 2012.

Since June 2020, the two MWM gas engines have been generating a total of 3.5 MW of electrical energy and 4.2 MW of thermal energy for the power and heat supply of the greenhouse.

The SCR catalysts of the two natural gas-fired MWM gas engine enable the recycling of the carbon-dioxide released with the engine exhaust gas. After the exhaust gas has been duly treated, the carbon-dioxide is used for the organic carbon fertilization of the tomato plants in order to stimulate plant growth.

The heating of the greenhouses is the main cost driver, as it consumes most of the energy. Through the implementation of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant which runs on clean pipeline natural gas, the operating costs can be reduced significantly.

All natural gas-fired MWM gas engines can be customised for applications with heat recovery. The gas engine drives a generator for the generation of electrical energy. At the same time, the jacket water and/or exhaust gas cooling cycles can be routed through heat exchangers in order to transfer the engine’s exhaust heat from the engine to a hot water storage tank.

The hot water is stored and used for heating the greenhouses. Additionally, the carbon-monoxide can be removed with the help of oxidation catalysts, and NOx emissions can be brought down to just a few ppm (parts per million) with the help of a urea-based SCR system.

Thereafter, the exhaust gas is so clean that it can be used as fertilizer to stimulate plant growth, thereby contributing to the operator’s profitability.

The MWM TCG 3020 V20 achieves an output of 2,300 kWel and can be used flexibly in different variants for applications with natural gas, biogas, landfill gas and propane gas.

With up to 45 percent for natural gas and 43.6 percent for biogas applications, the new MWM genset offers the best electrical efficiency.

The advantages of the genset are the reduced installation and operating costs as well as the safe and intelligent plant control, which contribute to improved efficiency of the gas engine.

POWER PROTECTION PROVIDED FOR LEADING CZECH COLOCATION DATACENTRE

L

eading Swiss UPS manufacturer CENTIEL’s three phase, true modular UPS CumulusPower™ was recently selected and installed to protect the power at the Czech colocation datacentre TTC TELEPORT. Approximately 60% of all Czech internet traffic originates in TTC TELEPORT datacentres which are some of the most modern facilities of this type in Europe. Companies from all over the world host their data with TTC TELEPORT, which offers a wholly independent datacentre service based on 20 years’ experience.

In October 2015, TTC TELEPORT built the largest modular data centre in the Czech Republic in Prague.

Initially, much of the 8,000m2 facility was left empty, ready to accommodate future customers. Recently, as a result of client demand, further significant investment in equipment has been made to complete two new data halls (Module 2 and Module 6), including the installation of CENTIEL’s state of the art UPS technology to protect the power to this area of the facility.

The install needed to be completed quickly and efficiently due to the interruption of Christmas 2020 which fell during the project timeline.

It was also important to secure the ongoing processes of the TTC TELEPORT datacentre to ensure there was no disruption during the set up.

During 2015 the technical infrastructure of the datacentre was altered due to challenges with the original design. Rework of the entire project was completed in record time of just four months. The concepts of some of the sections were retained but most had to be redesigned from scratch. The newly-developed data centre required a modular UPS that offered flexible, scalable, reliable, and efficient power protection to support the increasing power capacity without jeopardising the availability of the IT technologies already installed.

In 2020 CENTIEL’s partner was asked to complete the expansion phase of the project as a trusted partner of TTC TELEPORT. It was after this that CENTIEL’s UPS was introduced to provide a secure and efficient power supply while supporting the scalability of the datacentre.

System testing and commissioning of the new UPS was ultimately completed in February 2021.

Testing was rigorous and included both the new and existing areas of the facility. More than 800 partial functional tests of individual systems and load tests of the technologies were performed with a simulated operating load of 700kW IT/module.

Testing was concluded by a general integration test of all technologies, simulating standard operation as well as non-standard random defects.

CENTIEL’s UPS was load tested for several hours with 100% success.

In 2017 Eneraque supplied another shopping centre in Bisbane City with two 880kVA standby silenced diesel generators. In this contract the company was contracted to administer the complete turnkey design, supply, installation and commissioning of the gensets: Eneraque also supplied and installed a 10,000 litre underground diesel tank, plus a diesel fuel pump skid complete with duty/standby pumps and filtration.

A PLC control system and diesel fuel pipework was installed from the underground tank at the Brisbane City location and up to 15 levels to where the generators were positioned on a rooftop. .

In Australia Eneraque has also announced its partnership with Jemena on the delivery of Sydney Water’s Malabar Biomethane Project.

Due for completion in 2022, this Biomethane Gas Grid Injection project is claimed to be the first of its kind on Australian soil, with a host of environmental and economic benefits.

The process involves upgrading biogas (1,100 Nm3/hour) produced by existing anaerobic digestion infrastructure at Malabar WWTP to biomethane, a renewable pipeline compliant gas.

The biomethane is then injected into the Jemena Gas Network for distribution to thousands of Sydney homes where it is to be used for cooking, heating and hot water.

“This is an incredibly exciting step forward for Australia in the renewable energy space – as a locally owned and run business, this is an area we are quite passionate about,” notes Jeremy Pringle – Director at Eneraque.

He added: “Partnering with Jemena to deliver a clever waste-to-energy solution for Sydney Water, is a very positive step in paving the way to a greener future in Australia.”

Biogas from Sydney Water will be purified to biomethane for grid distribution through the integration of proven Dutch technology, developed in conjunction with Eneraque’s equipment partner, Bright Biomethane.

“This is a great development of biomethane production and deployment in Australia… We are proud to bring our Dutch technology now to Australia in an excellent collaboration with Eneraque,” commented Jeffery Kruit – Area Sales Engineer for Bright Biomethane.

This biomethane project has been initiated by Jemena and Sydney Water with the support and funding from ARENA (Australian Renewable Energy Agency) as part of ARENA’s Advancing Renewables Program and will be

realised by Eneraque in collaboration with Jemena and Bright Biomethane.

The Malabar The Biogas Upgrader Plant has been developed from many years of successful application across Europe, Asia and the USA. The plant is easily integrated with anaerobic digesters and provides a refined, efficient method of processing raw biogas into useable biomethane.

The scope of the project involved removing and replacing the existing emergency generator, including the emergency switchboard, associated infrastructure and to upgrade the transformer to a high voltage transformer.

825 KVA GENERATOR SET SUPPLIED TO VIAPORT MARINA’S ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE

ViaPort Marina officials specified the set to provide uninterrupted power in case of any power cuts involving the grid.

A 3.0MW BIOGAS-FUELLED POWER PLANT FOR A STARCH FACTORY IN UDONTHANI, THAILAND

I

nio has supplied a 3MW gas generator consisting of two Jenbacher 420 gas engines. Souer has successfully commissioned the 3.0MW biogas-fuelled power plant which now relies on two Jenbacher 420 gas engines in Udonthani for the starch factory at times of on-off peak demand.

Starch production involves the isolation of starch from plant sources. It takes place in starch manufacturing plants. The starch industry is a part of modern food processing perations which depend on using starch as a starting material for production of starch derivatives, hydrolysates, dextrins.

Currently main starch sources are maize, rice, wheat, potatoes and sorghum. Applications of starch in non-food sectors include: production of dextrin and adhesives, drilling fluids, biodegradable plastics, gypsum binders and many other. In addition modified starches are used as emulsion stabilizers. Other important fields of starch application are textile sizing agents, excipient in tablets for pharmaceuticals.

Based on proven Jenbacher Type 3 and Type 6 engine designs, the Series 4 gas engines are characterised by high power and efficiency. Advanced control and monitoring systems ensure easy maintenance as well as reliability and availability.

Combining superb efficiency with an innovative engine concept, Type 4 units save fuel but don’t sacrifice flexibility or reliability.

A high-power turbocharger allows optimal operation at higher air intake temperature and altitude. Low NOx emissions versions available for biogas, achieved without the requirement for an exhaust catalyst.

At the Udonthani starch factory biogas is being used to fuel two Jenbacher 420 gas engines to provide renewable power using the biogas cogeneration systems.

In this case, biogas is formed by the anaerobic decomposition of putrescible organic material from the starch process.

Biogas can either be used to generate electricity and heat via a combined heat and power gas engine, or can be cleaned to produce pure biomethane via biogas upgrading.

When the RS-485 option is selected, the user can send and receive information from the DGC-2020 via the RS485 communications port and A Modbus protocol feature allows the DGC-2020 to be fully integrated into the building management system.

In addition to the standard generator protection (27, 59, 81O, 81U) the DGC-2020 can be equipped with a more sophisticated generator protection system. This option provides an overcurrent element (51) with 17 selectable time current characteristic curves and a voltage phase

balance protection function. The DGC-2020 monitors utility (mains) and determines if it is providing power that is suitable for the loads. If the utility supply goes outside of predetermined levels, the generator is started and the utility is disconnected from the load and the generator is connected. It also includes appropriate adjustable timers or time delays for establishing stable utility operation.

A CEM add-on module increases the contact input and contact output capability adding 10 contact inputs and 24 form C contact outputs.

This module communicates to the DGC-2020 via SAE J1939 CANBUS and allows the user to program the functionality of these inputs and outputs in the BESTCOMS programmable logic program.

The user can add labels for the inputs and outputs that appear on BESTCOMS front panel, and in the programmable logic. All the functionality can be assigned to these inputs and outputs as if they were an integrated part of the DGC-2020.

The CEM-2020 module has all of the environmental ratings, like the DGC-2020, including a model for UL Class1 Div2 applications.

The output ratings of the form C contacts are: (12 contacts) 10A @ 30VDC and (12 contacts) 2A @ 30VDC.

The 2A rated contacts are gold flash contacts for low current circuits. The CEM-2020 terminals accept a maximum wire size of 12 AWG while the chassis ground requires 12 AWG wire. The CEM-2020 provides the user with the flexibility to use the same model DGC-2020 gen-set controller for simple applications or more complicated applications that require contact functionality or duplication of contacts for remote annunciation.

Flexibility is one of the benefits of the DGC-2020, and this add-on module enhances that benefit even further, says the manufacturer.

A NetBiter® RTU-TCP Gateway feature connects the fully enhanced DGC-2020 with Ethernet and mobile networks. The gateway acts as a transparent bridge translating DGC2020 Modbus registers allowing control systems, such as PLCs, SCADA, etc. to communicate over Ethernet.

TWO 2MW DIESEL GENSETS FOR THE PUNTA CATALINA THERMOELECTRIC POWER STATION

M

argen has delivered two 2MW diesel gensets for the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Station in the Dominican Republic. The 752MW Punta Catalina is a coal-fired thermoelectric power plant with two power-generating units located in the Valdesia region of the Peravia province in the Southwest sector of the Dominican Republic. It is owned by Dominican Corporation of State Electric Companies (CDEEE) and Patrimonial Fund of Reformed Companies (Fonper).

Punta Catalina is the country’s biggest power-generating facility. It is operated by Central Termoelectrica Punta Catalina, a commercial company, co-owned by the state-run Dominican Corporation of State Electric Companies (CDEEE) with 99.2% interest and Patrimonial Fund of Reformed Companies (Fonper) with 0.8% interest.

The plant was constructed by the Odebrecht-Tecnimont-Estrella consortium, and the rights to the power plant were transferred to the CDEEE and Fonper in December 2019.

The project involved an estimated investment of approximately $2.45bn. The first unit of the power plant became operational in October 2019, while the second unit completed final test stages in April 2020 and is generating 376MW. The inauguration ceremony of the power plant was postponed due to the Covod-19 pandemic.

A total of $600m was issued in sovereign bonds and financing resources from European banks (SACE) to ensure the development of the project in 2016.

The plant can meet up to 35% of the total power demand of the Dominican Republic. The project created more than 6,400 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs during the peak period of its construction.

Punta Catalina is an advanced power plant, based on clean-fuel technology. It comprises two pulverised mineral coal-fired units with 376MW capacity each,

delivering a total combined capacity of 752MW. The nominal efficiency of the plant is 39.2% LHV. Each unit of the plant features a 360MW pulverised coal boiler with an air quality control system, coal pulverisers, air heaters, fans, steam turbine generator, process control, as well as monitoring systems.

The units are also equipped with the Plant Balance equipment needed for the plant’s operation.

Additionally, the project includes the country’s longest coal handling port terminal with a length of 1,600m, a completely closed building with 200,000t of coal storage capacity, and other associated infrastructure.

The coal used as fuel is currently transported through closed transportation systems without the need for human intervention.

A spokesman for MARGEN, basedin Marinello, Italy, commented: “We have just completed the overhaul of the plant at the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Power Station in Santo Domingo. We have provided two generators of 2 MW each, featuring the dummyload system: a load bank has allowed the efficient operation of the station serving the emergency startup of the power station’s turbine.”

Most electricity generation in the

Dominican Republic comes from thermal sources. Only 14% of the i nstalled capacity is hydroelectric, with this percentage falling to below 9% when all the thermal self-generation is accounted for.

The exploitation of other renewable resources (i.e. solar, wind, tidal) is very limited.

National capacity The Dominican Republic has a total installed capacity of 3,635 MW with peak demand of 1,800 MW.8 Renewable energy generation in the Dominican Republic only makes up 14% of total electricity (nearly all of which is provided by hydroelectric facilities), while the remaining 85% of electricity is generated from imported fossil fuels.

Despite recent growth in the country’s generating capacity, 18.4% of its demandhave gone unmet..

Due to grid unreliability, many industries and private individuals generate their own electricity using inefficient small-scale fossil fuel-based units.

HEAT RECOVERY TECHNOLOGY SUCCESS IN THE COLD OF THE CANADIAN ARCTIC

A

s Summer turns in to Autumn and before the great Mackenzie River freezes over, several large barges are transported along the river’s icy waters. Once secured in position, they form an oil and gas exploration camp which operates from October through to June each year and has done so for the past 12 years.

With the approach of Winter, temperatures fall dramatically so that the barges are frozen fast into the ice-covered river. Due to its remote location, for the next six months the only way in or out of the camp is by helicopter, or ice roads constructed on top of the frozen river.

The barge facility is now home and base camp for Horizon Marine’s 88-person crew, who will work throughout the winter months in one of the most remote oil and gas exploration facilities on earth.

With seasonal temperatures ranging from -17°C to -40°C, the working days are long, extremely cold and very dark in this North Canadian Winter wilderness.

Supporting life in these freezer like conditions is the ‘Arctic Star’; the base camp barge where the crew retreat for warmth and light during those dark winter days and nights.

Heat and power are valuable, vital resources, without which, the crew would surely perish in this hostile environment.

To ensure there is adequate provision of both, Frontier Power Products were commissioned by Horizon to design and build a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system to replace the previous two independent 400 kW gen-sets, which had no heat recovery system.

The solution proposed by Frontier used three 150 kW (270hp) John Deere generating sets, arranged to operate in parallel, with automatic controls enabling the units to start up and shut down individually, to cater for the varying electrical demands of the camp.

A heat recovery system was also required for the gen-sets engines and here, Frontier relied on Bowman’s technical expertise to provide the correct specification heat exchangers to harvest heat energy from the engines cooling and exhaust systems.

Bowman proposed a solution comprising three shell and tube heat exchangers to cool and recover heat from the engines jacket water, plus three exhaust gas heat exchangers to recover the high levels of waste heat generated from the engines exhaust stream.

Heat that would normally be rejected from the cooling and exhaust systems is recovered by the Bowman units and then piped to and dispersed throughout the camp. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

The Bowman heat recovery solution has proved to be extremely reliable, as the original heat exchangers have now been in operation for around 25,000 hours, since installation 12 years ago.

During that time, fuel costs for the ‘Artic Star’ have reduced by around 33%, thanks to the addition of the heat recovery system.

Adding heat recovery to an engine powered genset is an effective way of recovering a cost-effective energy source that would otherwise go to waste, whilst increasing engine efficiency from around 30% (power only) to in excess of 80% (combined heat & power).

Around 50% of all fuel input into the engine can be recovered as heat energy and Bowman manufactures a range of heat exchangers that can recover this from virtually every part of the engine, including the exhaust stream, jacket water cooling, turbo charged induction air, plus oil lubrication and fuel cooling.

Recovered heat can be used for a wide range of domestic, commercial or industrial uses, including district heating, hot water, process heating, generating additional electricity, grain drying, fuel pre-heating, or running a chiller for comfort cooling.

TRANSFORMERS, SWITCHGEAR & CONTAINERISED MODULAR SUBSTATIONS FOR SOUTH AFRICA

S

outh Africa’s exciting onshore natural gas and helium project Tetra4 is being supplied with transformers, switchgear and containeriSed modular substations by local commercial operation Zest WEG. Developed by emerging producer Renergen, Tetra4 is the country’s first and only holder of an onshore petroleum production right. Located near Virginia in the Free State province, the natural gas in the deposit reportedly contains world-beating concentrations of helium – up to 12% compared to typical levels of around 0,5%.

The first phase of the project is advancing well, with the construction of the liquid natural gas (LNG) an helium plant scheduled for completion by the end of 2021 or early in 2022.

According to Lukas Barnard, Zest WEG’s sector specialist - oil and gas business development, the equipment ordered from Zest WEG is on track to be delivered and installed in the third quarter of this year.

“The transformers we have been contracted to supply are a 7MVA 33/11KV unit and two 1.5MVA 6.6/0.4KV units, being manufactured locally at our transformer facility in Wadeville,” says Barnard. “We will also supply the 33kV, 11kV and 6,6kV medium voltage switchgear, which will be installed into two six-meter containerized substations, being locally manufactured by Zest WEG at its Heidelberg facility.”

He explains: “The medium voltage switchgear will be installed in the modular substations in Heidelberg, where a factory acceptance test will be conducted before equipment is transported to site. The complete package is managed with a single point of contact – a project manager – at Zest WEG, easing the customer’s administrative burden.”

Renergen says it wanted a supplier with the necessary experience and expertise, but more than that it needed a partner who could meet the tight delivery requirements, with enough flexibility to find solutions to the challenges related to a project of this nature.

It also reduces currency risk by minimizing our exposure to exchange rate fluctuations.”

Renergen also emphasizes the advantage of Zest WEG’s package solutions capability, especially in a project like this with multiple streams of work that need to be coordinated across multi-disciplinary teams.

Barnard says this is where Zest WEG’s project manager added considerable value in terms of management, procurement and project flow.

“When multiple contractors and suppliers are involved, the project flow becomes very difficult and can generate significantly more risk,” he says.

“Our project manager was able to work with the customer to mitigate these risks and streamline the roll-out.”

He also notes the advantages of the containerized and E-House modular substations in fast track projects.

By manufacturing the units in a dedicated facility, Zest WEG provided an efficient solution while reducing the on-site responsibilities of the project developers.

“Building a brick-and-mortar substation means more personnel and activity on site over an extended period, with all the related health and safety implications such as inductions and medical checks,” says Barnard.

“It is quicker and far more convenient to build it in a wellequipped facility such as ours where it is also possible to run factory acceptance tests before delivery.”

SOCIAL ENERGY CLOSES ELECTRICITY AND A G S SUPLP Y BUSINESS, CONTINUES IN SOLAR BATTERIES

Renewable energy scale-up Social Energy has taken the decision to close its electricity and gas supply business in light of untenable current market conditions, but will continue to operate as a solar battery optimisation company, selling smart battery systems and providing ongoing savings to its customers.

The cleantech company with 7,100+ connected solar battery customers acted as the energy supplier for 5,600 of its customers, helping them to keep their bills as low as possible, in addition to the savings that they make from their solar and battery systems.

With the current spiking costs across wholesale electricity and gas, Social Energy has been forced to close its retail energy supply business, and like numerous other suppliers, enter Ofgem’s Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process.

Since its launch in 2019, Social Energy has always had a different business model to many other supply businesses, has never appeared on switching websites or offered loss-leading tariffs.

However, with energy suppliers forced to now sell energy at a loss under the Ofgem price cap, the management team have concluded that the UK supply business is no longer viable.

He replaces Hannah Vickers who left ACE earlier in the year. He will take up his new role on 31 January 2022.

Stephen joins following more than a decade in senior leadership roles representing the UK’s energy sector on the global stage. He joins ACE after four years at the helm of UKPIA, the trade association for the UK’s downstream fuel sector.

While at UKPIA, Stephen led significant change across this important manufacturing sector, spearheading a cross-industry response on issues such as environmental regulation and promoting the sector’s opportunity to deliver decarbonisation in pursuit of Net Zero, while helping to articulate a vision for a sustainable future for the sector.

He has led on issues such as the energy transition, the role of hydrogen, fuel quality, forging proactive and collaborative relationships with the UK Government and the devolved administrations at ministerial level.

Most recently, he has promoted the concept of industrial clustering and is a strong advocate of the Government’s levelling up agenda.

Prior to this Stephen held a number of senior leadership positions at OGUK, the representative body for the UK offshore energy industry,

ENERGY DAY AT THE UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE UK 2021, SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY & NATURAL GAS

ix years ago, in 2015 COP21 took place in Paris.

For the first time ever, every participating country agreed to work together to limit global warming to not more than 1.5 degrees, to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate, and to make money available to deliver on these aims. The Paris Agreement was born.

They agreed that every five years they would come back with an updated plan that would reflect their highest possible ambition at that time.

So, the run up to this year’s summit in Glasgow was the moment (delayed by a year due to the pandemic) when countries updated their plans for reducing emissions.

But, the commitments laid out in Paris have not come close to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, and the decade running up to 2030 is seen as crucial.

November 4th 2021 was Energy Day at the UN Climate Change Conference UK 2021.

The headlines of the day were all about the commitment to phase out coal as the largest single contributor to climate change, although other announcements included the intention to deliver clean, renewable energy to 1 billion people in developing and emerging economies and create 150 million green jobs by 2030.

AMPS members have been making the transition to cleaner energy for some time, and although emergency power, particularly in certain situations, may still rely on diesel as a fast and reliable fuel source, there are now dependable greener and cleaner options available.

Like it or not the power industry is undergoing a big change. We take a closer look at three AMPS members to discover how they are taking steps to address the problem.

SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED AT SILVERSTONEPARK SAVING FUEL & EMISSIONS IN CONSTRUCTION Silverstone Park business PUNCH Flybrid entered into a new partnership with Select Plant Hire Ltd. In September that could transform the way generators are utilised on construction sites across the country.

In a trial on one of its sites in London, Select, a leading plant hire specialist, connected a crane’s generator set to a PUNCH Flybrid energy storage flywheel.

In just one month (equating to 213 hours), the technology achieved a 50% fuel saving (over 1,300 litres) and prevented close to 3,500kg of CO² being released into the atmosphere.

That is the equivalent to the emissions of 30 passenger cars per month (based on average annual statistics per mile in the UK).

The technology has been designed and developed inside PUNCH Flybrid’s premises at Silverstone Park.

PUNCH Flybrid Managing Director Tobias Knichel commented: “It takes courage to be first. Select Plant Hire was the first company to approach PUNCH Flybrid for a technical collaboration to integrate flywheel energy storage directly onto tower cranes.

“This has convinced us that partnering with Select is the right next step for PUNCH Flybrid.”

Alex Warrington, Select’s Managing Director, said: “At one of our London sites we reduced the generator size on our CTL1600 (66t luffer) from 800kVA to 500kVA, with the opportunity for further reduction. It instantly generates substantial CO² savings and saves significant costs of rental – it makes sense on every level. This is yet another example of Select’s investment in sustainable plant.”

AGGREKO: HOW VIRTUAL GAS PIPELINES CAN HELP TO UNLOCK A GREENER FUTURE Conor Dooley, Director of Business Development – Energy Sectors Aggreko reflects on what’s ahead for natural gas.

Up until now, natural gas has sometimes been viewed in the same category as diesel. The general verdict has been that companies need to ditch all non-renewables as they transition towards lower emissions. Natural gas emits up to 40 per cent less CO2, 80 per cent less NOx, and 99 per cent less SO2 than diesel.

Because of this, natural gas will be the strongest growing fossil fuel from 2020 to 2035. It is the only fossil fuel expected to grow beyond 2030, peaking in 2037 before then being replaced by renewable solutions. It can be a key first step in reducing emissions and a stepping-stone on the net zero journey. For hard-to-abate sectors, such as heavy industry and heavy-duty transport, it provides an ideal bridging solution—offering a lower-emission alternative to other fossil fuels.

In addition to producing fewer emissions than other fossil fuels, some of its other benefits include: •Its environmentally safer to store than other fossil fuels.

•At its present levels, natural gas has enough recoverable resources to last around 230 years according to certain estimates.

Up until recently, however, there was one major challenge: Natural gas was only accessible to projects located in close proximity to pipelines. But this is changing.

Sectors which have sites in remote locations, such as mines, need to overcome the hurdles of access before they can consider how they begin to reduce their emissions footprint. Traditionally, diesel has been seen as the fuel of choice—due to its inherent energy density, reliability, availability, and relative cost advantage.

But when it comes to remote off-grid projects, virtual pipelines provide an innovative and eminently reliable source of LNG. By embracing natural gas, companies operating in hard-to-abate sectors or running remote projects can take the first step towards lowering emissions.

MAHLE Powertrain, the development service provider of automotive supplier MAHLE is supporting Liebherr Machines Bulle SA in their research aimed at developing hydrogenfuelled internal combustion engines, potentially for generator applications.

Their work involves the use of MAHLE’s prechamber jet ignition system (MJI). Engine tests have shown that by using this technology, the mixture of hydrogen and air can be ignited and burned at a high compression ratio, which makes the combustion process very efficient and stable. This paves the way for hydrogen generated in climate-neutral processes to be used in heavy-duty and off-road applications, such as excavators, track vehicles, and wheeled loaders.

“The use of hydrogen as a combustion fuel has the potential to make many heavy-duty and off-road applications climate-neutral quickly,” says Peter Wieske, Director Corporate Advanced Engineering at MAHLE. “A large number of studies in recent decades have shown that hydrogen can be used in internal combustion engines without any problems.”

“The expertise of Liebherr’s engineering teams in off-highway engine combustion and research on alternative fuels has been critical in this project,” adds Bouzid Seba, Head of Predevelopment at Liebherr Machines Bulle. He underscores Liebherr’s open approach to all technologies, whereby the company explores various methods of energy conversion and the fuels that are most suited to them.

“The challenge is to stop engine knocking and premature ignition without reducing the compression ratio and thus efficiency and performance yield.
