Motor and alternator manufacturer, WEG has supplied eight 1,700 kVA alternators to provide emergency power to the Clinical Centre of Serbia’s newly-expanded facilities. At a time when hospitals globally are a focal point in the fight against COVID-19, this project highlights the importance of effective backup power systems to cover unexpected mains power failure.

The Clinical Centre of Serbia, located in country’s capital, Belgrade, has 3,150 hospital beds, considered to be the highest number in Europe, and around one million patients are treated there every year. In August 2018, the president of Serbia, Aleksander Vučić announced a government investment of 110 million euros into a complex facilities reconstruction at the centre, to be implemented by 2022.

The bidding process to manufacture these systems for the Clinical Centre of Serbia was intense. In the end, Serbia’s biggest producer of generator sets, Tehnolink won the contract to supply the generators. The company designs, manufactures, assembles and services diesel- and gas-powered generator sets. It was also down to Tehnolink to source the best components for the job including the alternators, engines and radiators, in order to provide the Serbian hospital with an effective dependable power supply system.

To win the project with Tehnolink, WEG had to present a case for its technical capabilities. WEG’s alternators stood out from the competition (reports the company) ‘because of their solid construction cast iron frame, specifically the manufacturer’s AG10 line, which were preferred to the rolledsteel alternatives’. The cast iron frame allows for better power density, reduced vibration and more efficient cooling.

WEG also offered its own technology with the alternator, to emulate the characteristics of an exterior permanent magnet generator, without increasing the length and price of the machine. WEG’s I-PMG technology is an integrated separate winding within the machine which eliminates the need for an external PMG.

SIX NEW GENSETS ARRIVE AT THE PREMISES OF ONE OF EUROPE’S BIGGEST HEAT & POWER PRODUCERS Two semi-trailers loaded with gensets recently arrived at the facilities of a leading European energy company. Manufactured by INMESOL of Spain, the gensets had to travel across Europe at a time when most borders were closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The various genset met specific specifications: two of 275kVA, two of 385kVA, and two of 770kVA. All units feature Volvo Penta engines and STAMFORD alternators. The gensets are all protected by INMESOL’s Rental Range canopies, known for being very robust, weather-resistant and well soundproofed, making them perect as mobile emergency units even when deployed in residential areas.

Each genset has been equipped with one of the latest controllers developed by DEEP SEA, the DSE 8620 Mk II. This is a smart controller which - among many other features - allows equipment to be configured for parallel operation between gensets or to the mains. They can also operate independently on standby to the mains, supervising a client facility’s incoming networks and taking over the load in case of mains failure. When the power grid is restored the generator sets transfer the load to the power grid without interuupting supply. The INMESOL gensets can be controlled from the power company’s operation centres by remote control or be preconfigured to work on Peak Shaving or Support modes.

Energy storage company Form Energy said it has signed a contract with utility Great River Energy to jointly deploy a 1MW/150MWh pilot project in the USA. This system will be the first commercial deployment of Form Energy’s proprietary long-duration energy storage system.

Form Energy said its aqueous air battery system leverages some of the safest, cheapest, most abundant materials on the planet and offers a clear path to low-cost, long-duration energy storage.

The project with Great River Energy - Minnesota’s 2nd-largest electric utility and the fifth largest generation and transmission cooperative in the US - will be a 1MW, grid-connected storage system capable of delivering its rated power continuously for 150 hours, far longer than the two to four hour usage period common among lithium-ion batteries being deployed at utility-scale today, Form Energy said.

This duration allows for a fundamentally new reliability function to be provided to the grid from storage, one historically only available from thermal generation resources, the company said. The electrical grid is increasingly supplied by renewable sources of energy. Commercially viable longduration storage could increase reliability by ensuring that the power generated by renewable energy is available at all hours.

UK POWER GRID COMPANY ELEXON TARGETED BY HACKERS ON MAY 14TH, 2020, SAYS COMPANY

UK power grid company Elexon reported that it suffered a cyberattack targeting its internal IT systems on May 14th, 2020. The intrusion locked its employees out of internal email accounts and prevented them from using laptops remotely.

Elexon, which administers a crucial part of the power supply chain by managing money in electricity markets, notified energy companies on Thursday that its internal IT system suffered a cyber attack, rendering employees unable to send or receive any emails.

Elexon, owned by the National Grid’s Electricity System Operator (ESO), is responsible for keeping a balance between power supply and demand. The company takes 1.25 million meter readings every day and handles £1.5 billion of refunds each year by comparing how much electricity generators and suppliers say they will produce or consume with actual volumes.

Ian Heritage, Cloud Security Architect, Trend Micro, commented: “Supply chain dependency means it is critical to protect both big and smaller players when delivering Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) – the supply chain is only as robust as its weakest link.

“The bad news is that many companies frequently are part of the supply chain that feeds resources to deliver CNI; thus, a cyberattack against one part of this chain can indirectly affect the supply of services.”

Chief security scientist at Thycotic, Joseph Carson, said that Elexon had reportedly been running an outdated VPN server which has been an emerging threat for any company which may have missed vulnerabilities, even those in security software.

“In many incidents poor cybersecurity best practices have been sacrificed such as unpatched software, default credentials, poor privileged access security and no multifactor authentication leaves energy sector open to cyberattacks. Luckily for this particular incident, the attack only impacted the IT operations and not the critical services they provide,” he added.

PARKWIND AND BLADT SIGN AGREEMENT FOR DESIGN OF BALTIC SEA SUB-STATION Parkwind and Bladt have signed an agreement for the design, fabrication and installation of the Arcadis Ost 1 substation, situated in the German Baltic Sea 19km off Ruger’s island.

The platform is a joint project between the two companies and will be operated alongside German Transmission System Operator (TSO) 50 Hertz. The installation will be at the site of the 247MW Arcadis Ost 1 wind farm and construction is expected to begin in 2022. The new agreement marks the beginning of the next project phase with preliminary steelworks. Semco Maritime will be responsible for the design & implementation of the electrical system.

On April 28th, 2020, the UK broke the record for the longest period of electricity generation without coal, energy data analyst EnAppSys has revealed.

The previous record of 18 days, 6 hours and 10 minutes was set at 21:25 on June 4th, 2019. The new record set was due to a reduction in the size of the available generation fleet and low demand due to the coronavirus pricing coal out of the market.

Currently only five coalfired generation units are available to run: one at Drax near Selby, two at Ratcliffe on Soar near Nottingham and two at West Burton near Gainsborough. Some extra units are due to become available through the year ready for the winter, doubling the capacity at these three power stations.

The last coal station to run was Drax unit 5 which switched off at 23:35 on April 9th, 2020 – meaning that the record was surpassed at 05:45 on April 28, 2020. This record only applied to the

island of Great Britain as the Kilroot power station which burns coal is still used in Northern Ireland to help with system stability issues.

EnAppSys said that any comparison of coal usage in the UK against other countries should include a consideration of two sources of coal: “hard coal”, which is what people in GB would consider to be coal, and “lignite”.

Hard coal use has declined from a peak of around 69GW in early 2015 to around 17GW now at the height of the corona crisis. In contrast, lignite use has remained historically high but has only recently started to drop,

IN BRIEF SUMITOMO ELECTRIC BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF JAPAN’S FIRST COMMERCIAL OFFSHORE WIND FARMS Last month Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. and Kajima Corporation jointly started the fullscale construction of offshore wind farms at Akita Port and Noshiro Port in Akita Prefecture in February 2020. These are the first large-scale commercial offshore wind farms in Japan. Until now, all offshore wind farms operated in Japan have been constructed as demonstration experiments conducted under public support and subsequently transferred to private companies. By contrast, for the first time in Japan, offshore wind farms in this project will be developed and operated by a private company, Akita Offshore Wind Corporation, on a commercial basis.

BRAVIDA BUYS STAKE IN FINLAND-BASED COMPANY SAVON AURINKOENERGIA Sweden-based company Bravida has acquired a stake in Finnish solar energy company Savon Aurinkoenergia. As per the terms of the agreement, Bravida has acquired a 65% stake in the Finnish firm to become the major stakeholder in the company.

Bravida Finland division head Marko Holopainen said: “This acquisition creates a solid foundation for further development of Bravida’s sustainable customer offering. We look forward to our future cooperation.”

AMARINTH SUPPLIES SIZEWELL B POWER STATION WITH NEW BESPOKE VERTICAL SUMP PUMP Amarinth, a leading company specialising in the design, application and manufacture of centrifugal pumps and associated equipment to the Oil & Gas, petrochemical, LNG, chemical, industrial, power and desalination markets has supplied EDF with a fully interchangeable vertical pump to replace an obsolete Goodwin ATEX unit at the Sizewell B Power Station.

A submersible wastewater management pump supplied by Goodwin in an ATEX Zone 1 tank was commissioned at the Sizewell B site some 25 years ago and so was coming to the end of its natural working life. However, these pumps are now obsolete, so a direct replacement was no longer available, meaning engineers had to find a new solution to maintain operations.

EDF required a pump that would perform the same duty as the Goodwin pump with minimal modification to pipework and fittings and that could be supplied on a 20-week deadline to fit around a planned shutdown window.

Replacement of obsolete equipment in power stations to maintain operations has become a major issue for the power generation companies and so Roll-Royce has created the Proactive Obsolescence Management System (POMS) to quickly identify equipment suppliers that can provide replacement solutions for the obsolete equipment.

Amarinth is both registered in POMS and had previously undertaken a site survey of the existing pumps at Sizewell, giving EDF confidence that the company fully understood the challenges of providing a replacement pump.

Amarinth proposed a bespoke vertical sump pump as the most cost-effective solution to replace the Goodwin submersible pump. The company leveraged its unique modular design suite for vertical pumps which it has configured to handle over 100,000 pump variants. All assemblies and sub-assemblies have been checked against mating parts for clashes using computer-aided design tools ensuring that any variant assembled from the modules fits together perfectly.

CLARKE ENERGY REPAIRS ONE OF SUEZ FRANCE’S GAS ENGINE FLEET DESPITE COVID-19 SHUTDOWN Clarke Energy’s UK-based state-of-theart Overhaul and Repair Centre in Knowsley, near Liverpool performed a detailed 40,000-hour overhaul and repair for one of Suez France’s Jenbacher gas engine fleet.

Suez France is a major French multinational organisation. The overhaul and repair centre, service team and access to parts, provided the customer with a cost-effective, fast turnaround as opposed to purchasing premium parts directly.

The Jenbacher 320 gas engine was overhauled in the UK and returned to the Clarke Energy service team in France, ready for installation, within time and budget.

Clarke Energy’s service teams are deployed around the country, providing 24/7 maintenance 365-days-of-the-year.

Although industries are facing challenging times, Clarke Energy is

providing customers with the same high levels of quality INNIO Jenbacher support, says the company.

IN BRIEF TWO GAS-FIRED COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANTS BOUGHT BY TOTAL Two gas-fired combined cycle power plants belonging to Energías de Portugal’s (EDP) have been bought by Total.

The two gas-fired combined cycle power plants provide an electricity generation capacity of nearly 850MW. The energy portfolio acquired by Total also includes 2.5 million business-toconsumer (B2C) customers.

Total chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné commented: “This is a major new step in Total’s ambition to become a broad energy company. This transaction enables Total to become one of the key players in the energy market in Spain, covering a wide spectrum from LNG imports to power generation from renewables and gas.”

HENDRICKS REGIONAL HEALTH - NOW DEALING WITH COVID-19 PATIENTS - RELIES ON GENERAC GENSETS Hendricks Regional Health is a hospital system with medical facilities and a physician group serving residents of Hendricks County in suburban Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, including the towns of Avon, Bainbridge, Brownsburg, Danville, Greencastle, Lizton, Monrovia and Plainfield. The group’s $50 million, 96,000 square-foot facility in Brownsburg, Indiana, is currently involved with treating Covid-19 patients.

Just over a year ago EVAPAR and the project team at Generac provided two 500 kW diesel MPS backup generators with a modular air-conditioning solution from Multistack.

Like the generators that power it Multistack solutions are designed to expand easily as facility requirements change. Along with life safety backup power needs, Hendricks also wanted a backup system that would support air-conditioning for the entire hospital facility.

While air conditioning is not required by Indiana code, the additional backup capacity would ensure patient comfort in the event of utility power failure.

Each diesel-fuelled unit currently sits on a 300 sub-base fuel tank, which draws from a 1,200 gallon above-ground, bulk storage fuel tank. Essentially, even the fuel supply has a backup.

A company spokesman commented: “Generac and EVAPAR are proud to have worked with Hendricks Regional Health to provide a solution that supports current needs, their proactive vision and plans for growth.”

ACCURATE EMISSIONS TESTING FOR DIESEL ENGINES

GE RENEWABLE SIGNS TURBINE CONTRACT WITH FINA ENERJI GE Renewable Energy has signed a contract with Turkish renewable energy company Fina Enerji to supply 52 of its 3MW wind turbines to four of Fina Enerji’s windfarms in Turkey.

The total order capacity amounts to 193MW, which will produce enough energy to power 200,000 homes while offsetting 650,000 tonnes of CO2.

The agreement, which will help Turkey reach its renewable energy targets, includes a 10-year servicing agreement.

ELCOS POWER GENERATORS HELP TO MAINTAIN THE KILNS & MILLS OF A CEMENT PLANT IN AFRICA

A remarkable team effort by Elcos Power Generators and Perkins’ distributor BU Power Systems is helping a cement plant in Africa keep its kilns and mills running around the clock.

Cement factories are the lifeblood of the global construction sector, with customers depending on them to supply the volumes they need, when they need them. Any loss of power can mean missed orders – and serious commercial consequences.

This was a risk that one cement plant in Africa simply wasn’t willing to take. It urgently needed to find a robust standby solution to pick up the load should the grid grind to a halt. But with strict noise limits and extreme temperatures on the site, it was a tough engineering challenge.

The site turned to Italian generator set provider Elcos for support. The company prides itself on working closely with clients to understand their unique needs and priorities.

On this job, Elcos needed to engineer a generating set – and a medium voltage parallel system – that would guarantee dependable operation in high temperatures. The unit would need to house a fuel tank and step-up transformer, while noise levels couldn’t exceed 64 dBA @ 7mt at full load.

Elcos worked with Perkins distributor BU Power Systems on the installation, who provided technical and commercial support from design to delivery. The engines selected were six 4012-46TWG2A units, all equipped with electronic speed governors. The final installation provides 6,000 kVA for the customer and gives them confidence to run the plant around the clock, in all conditions.

“This installation confirms our intention to expand the sales of our self-production medium voltage (MV) power plants,” said Elcos marketing coordinator Chiara Cabini. “We’re already considered a reliable partner in MV and having the support of Perkins, with its history of success, reliability and professionalism, is an important part of that.”

FINANCE FOR THAI WIND POWER & BATTERY STORAGE PROJECT The Asian Development Bank (ADB) recently signed a deal with the Southern Thailand wind power and battery energy storage project. The associated loan was signed with Lomligor, a subsidiary of BCPG Public Company (BCPG).

The project is projected to generate around 14,870MWh of electricity annually while offsetting 6,364 tonnes of carbon in the country starting this year.

Additionally, the project will ultimately increase the development of renewable energy within Thailand’s domestic grid. ADB’s Jackie Surtani said: “This project contributes to Thailand’s Power Development plan targets for clean energy and also the potential of integrated renewables.”

IN BRIEF BELGIUM’S GRID RECEIVES ENERGY FROM THE NORTHWESTER 2 WIND FARM Project developer Parkwind reports that the 219MW Northwester 2 wind farm has begun supplying clean energy to Belgium’s grid.

The entire project is notable for having been completed in just ten months.

Parkwind holds a 70% stake in Northwester 2, while Sumitomo Corporation holds the remaining 30%.

Peter Caluwaerts, Parkwind project director ,said: “As we started the offshore construction of our fourth wind farm back in July last year, we could not have imagined the circumstances under which we would be completing this project. Following the powerful storms over the winter that caused some temporary disruption, the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to deal with an unprecedented level of uncertainty.

“We managed to keep the project on track though. Following an excellent dialogue with the Belgian Government and a great collaboration with our contractors, all operating procedures were re-designed to continue the construction works, ensuring the health and safety of all people involved.”

The International Energy Agency estimated that electricity demand in countries with partial and full lockdown has declined by around 15 per cent in markets where strong confinement has been adopted.

“This is a huge amount for a sector that tends to be highly predictable and where planners seek to precisely forecast energy demand in real time in order to match with supply,” comments the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) senior fellow Dr Renato Lima de Oliveira.

“Energy is a key input of all economic activities, and when business suffers, such as during recessions, it hurts the demand for energy consumption. The major difference this time is that, the shock has been less gradual than a typical economic recession and it has impacted much more oil than electricity consumption,” said de Oliveira.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak will also affect the supply chain and installation operations in China’s wind energy industry, as well as the global wind industry, according to a report from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Chinese Wind Energy Association (CWEA).

GWEC Market Intelligence interviewed six Chinese turbine OEMs (which collectively held more than 75% of Chinese market share in 2018), one foreign turbine OEM, one utility, one stock-listed independent power producer, 5 component suppliers and one material supplier based in China.

GWEC concluded that while the virus will impact supply chain and installation operations, the slowdown will not be as significant as reported by some industry observers (for example predicting a halving of China’s installations in 2020).

China has the largest wind power capacity in the world and still has enough financial clout to weather the economic storm, suggest analysts.

FLUE GAS DESULPHURISATION PLANT TECH SUPPLIED TO NTPC

nternational technology group ANDRITZ has received an order – in co-operation with its partner Tata Projects Limited – to supply the technology and critical components for wet limestone flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) to be installed in thermal power plants Talcher (6 x 500 MW) and Vallur (3 x 500 MW) operated by National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), India.

The ANDRITZ scope of supply includes the plant’s complete basic engineering as well as detailed engineering for the absorber and other critical supplies.

Limestone flue gas desulphurisation systems are well-proven and cost-effective and have been used in power stations since the 1970s to convert the main acid gas SO2 into gypsum.

They are one of the most important sources of gypsum for the global gypsum industry (gypsum board, drywall, and so on). Over the years, ANDRITZ has created an advanced scrubber design with outstanding reliability and excellent availability. Plant economics have also been optimised, ensuring low capital and operating costs.

“

Limestone flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) units are well-proven and costeffective. ANDRITZ provides novel scrubber system (FGDplus) that maximizes SO2 and dust removal while keeping energy inputs to a minimum.

In international terms, ANDRITZ Air Pollution Control sets new standards in limestone FGD. For example, at the Neurath power plant (2 x 1100 MW) in Germany, two scrubbers with a diameter of 23.6 m are being installed to accommodate a flue gas flow of 4.7 million m³/h [stp, wet].

The nucleus of the Andritz design is the unique scrubber, which is an open spraying tower that has been enhanced in recent years using computerized simulation techniques.

Former AE&E has been conducting intensive development work in this field since 1995 and today enjoys a leading position which not only allows Andritz to simulate flow and temperature profiles, but also to calculate the distribution of SO2 concentrations in the scrubber.

LOAD BANKS: KEY CONSIDERATIONS

ith workplaces increasingly reliant on power hungry equipment, most businesses understand the importance of backup power systems. Interruptions in power supplies can cause lost productivity, damage equipment, have a huge impact on revenue and, in some cases, even risk life.

While backup power systems can mitigate that risk, it is vital that they are properly maintained and tested. Joann Price, Hire Manager at Crestchic Loadbanks, shares some key things to consider when specifying and renting a load bank.

What is a load bank and why might I need one?

Where businesses rely on power to remain operational, having backup power such as a generator is crucial. Wherever there is standby power, there is also a need for a load bank - a device which is used to create an electrical load which imitates the operational or ‘real’ load that a generator would use in normal operational conditions. In short, the load bank is used to test, support, or protect a critical backup power source and ensure that it is fit for purpose in the event that it is called upon.

Should I hire or buy?

When looking at specifying a load bank, the first decision is whether to hire or buy the equipment.

Consider how many generators you have on-site and how regularly you’ll need to test them.

In applications such as data centres or hospitals, where power is absolutely critical, buying a load bank might be the best solution. However, for those who need to run testing at set intervals, or smaller businesses that have neither the space or the technical expertise on-site, rental can provide an ideal solution.

Generally speaking, load bank rental companies will have the expertise to help specify, transport, install and remove the machines. You’ll benefit from the experience and knowledge of their technicians and have access to a fleet of equipment which ensures that you have the right equipment for the job, all without the capital expenditure.

What type of load bank do I need?

The type of load bank you need will vary depending on the applications involved. Typically load banks fall into three categories: * Resistive: The most common type, a resistive load bank provides a simulated electrical load for generators and back up power systems. They work by mimicking the operational load that a power

source would handle during actual use.

When used as a controlled system test, the load simulates real-life resistive loads, such as incandescent lighting and heating loads, as well as the resistive or unity power factor component of magnetic (motors, transformers) loads.

It is important to note that, In many applications, resistive loads make up a small proportion of power consumption.

In data centres, for example, it is generally only heating and lighting systems which use a resistive-only load.

Alongside this, other aspects of the operation incur reactive loads; these create a lagging power factor (pf), typically around 0.8, which is not accounted for when undertaking a solely resistive test. * Reactive: Reactive load banks are used to simulate systems affected by electric motors or other electromagnetic devices such as motor-driven devices and transformers. Reactive load banks are used to test the generator at its rated power factor (the ratio of the real power that is used and the apparent power that is supplied) which is a good indicator of the efficiency of the generator. * Resistive/reactive: Resistive/reactive load banks combine both resistive and reactive elements in one load bank package, which can also be switched to enable resistive only, inductive or lagging power factor testing. This type of system can be used to test the generator set fully at 100% nameplate kVA rating.

Resistive/reactive load banks provide a picture of how well an entire system will withstand changes in load pattern while experiencing the level of power that would typically be encountered under real operational conditions.

The inductive loads used in resistive/ reactive testing will show how a system will cope with a voltage drop in its regulator. This is particularly important in any application which requires generators to be operated in parallel (e.g. larger business infrastructures

such as major telecoms or data centres) where a problem with one generator could prevent other system generators from working as they should.

In addition to the main categories of loadbank listed above, DC load load banks can be used to provide an accurate load for the discharge of batteries, both following amps and voltage, from 24VDC to 700VDC, with power from 10kW to 664kW. Containerised medium voltage load banks can be used to provide higher voltages up to up to 33kV in both resistive and resistive/reactive configurations.

Where the load bank be tested?

When hiring a load bank, it is important to let your provider know where the equipment will be used and what the site conditions are like. Suppliers such as Crestchic are used to providing load banks to suit varying applications across different continents, from the extreme heat of the Sahara and the cold of the Antarctic to the corrosive saline environments found at sea. Letting your hire company know where the load bank will eventually be used - including the altitude, humidity and ambient temperature - can help them to specify the right equipment for the job.

Equally important is whether the load bank will be used indoors or outdoors.

Load banks work by dissipating energy as heat, making it vital that there is space around the equipment for proper airflow, or that the correct type of equipment, such as a vertical blow machine, is used. When used indoors, it is critical that temperatures are monitored to prevent accidental activation of sprinkler systems, overheating or damage to the load bank.

Finally, it helps your supplier if you let them know if the load bank will need to be installed or delivered above ground level. This will ensure that your supplier provides adequate manpower and cabling to successfully carry out testing.

GETTING INTO GEAR FOR THE POWER INDUSTRY Gearboxes are perhaps the unsung heroes of the power industry. Without them, vital components would simply not operate. But what should you be looking for when specifying a gearbox? Worldwide Independent Power caught up with Richard Irons, general manager at Radicon, to find out.

R

adicon is perhaps the oldest engineering company you’ve potentially never heard of. The company, which is based in Elland, West Yorkshire, can trace its heritage back to 1860 and the David Brown Group.

David Brown first used the Radicon moniker in 1933 as the brand name for a new range of worm gears. The model was so popular, Radicon became a generic name for all worm units, much in the same way as Hoover is synonymous with vacuum cleaners. In the 87 years since the Radicon name first appeared, over 3.5 million gearboxes have been sold, and that total is increasing daily.

Today, Radicon is owned by Elecon, Asia’s largest and fastest-growing gear manufacturer, which bought the company from David Brown in 2010. A team of 50 people, working across sales, service and maintenance and repairs supply over 5,000 gearboxes and repair some 300 units every year.

“We still design and manufacture worm gears,” says Richard Irons, general manager.

“But as well as the traditional standard product offering of worm gears, geared motors, couplings and industrial reducers, we also offer custom engineered gearboxes.

“Our product offering has incredible flexibility, and the experience of our engineering design teams means we can design solutions to suit our customer’s exact requirements in a wide range of applications and industries. We have undertaken lots of projects in the power industry, most recently supplying eight gearboxes to Hongsa Power in Laos as part of the US$1.5m deal.”

Having an extensive portfolio of standard gearboxes, developed by both Radicon and Elecon, plus the ability to tailor solutions to customers’ specific needs, gives the companies a significant advantage.

“If you consider the Elecon EOS units,” says Richard. “These can be used in any market, not just the power industry, but because we can add different baseplates, motors, couplings, brakes and cooling systems, for example, we can create a solution that is bespoke to the power industry.”

One area in which Radicon and Elecon have developed bespoke solutions is the wind industry. The Elecon Wind Turbine Gearbox is a combination of Helical and Planetary gears and offers a higher power capacity and features a specially designed speed increaser for heavy-duty windmills. Each unit is custom-built to a clients’ specifications and is available up to 2 MW capacity.

Elecon has also developed small and medium capacity wind turbine gearboxes in 55 kW (SBH 410/S) and 250 kW (SBH 280/80). These gearboxes are coaxial shaft-mounted working at the height of 40 meters from ground level. The unit’s internals are carburised, hardened, ground and profile-corrected for speed increasing gear application.

This helical type gearbox is mounted on the turbine shaft with a shrink disc.

Richard does have a word of caution to offer with regards the standardisation of gearboxes.There are two sides to standardisation he says.

“Obviously, standardisation ensures fewer part numbers and leads to more efficient manufacture, stocking and distribution.

This, in turn, leads to fewer parts to manage, saving time and cost

while reducing inventory. It can also contribute to more effective servicing and user training as they will have fewer types of product to become familiar with.

“We have an extensive range of range of standard products, and we always look to offer the most appropriate unit to suit the customer’s requirements.”

So, what is the downside of standardisation?

“Not every requirement is the same,” answers Richard. “A standard unit might not be the optimal solution. There is still a very important place for bespoke gearbox products to ensure that the exact needs of the customer’s applications are met. ““There have been several instances in which we have had to supply a bespoke gearboxes to replace an old obsolete gearbox.

Our unit has been dimensionally identical and interchangeable with the old housing. However, the new unit features numerous design improvements, leading to improved reliability and performance and reduced maintenance.”

For people in the power industry, there is a considerable choice, which can be confusing.

“I think there are several things people should look for, no matter what gearbox they’re considering or the industry they work for,” observes Richard. “Reliability is crucial; the service factor of the unit and its robustness are the three things that spring to mind first.”

Many aspects affect the ultimate reliability and performance of a gearbox says Richard. These include the actual design, material selection, build quality, installation and subsequent maintenance, but right at the front of the process is the correct selection and sizing of the gearbox to the specific application.

“This first stage is critical as under-sizing, or even over-sizing will cost the customer in many ways, irrespective of the quality of the product,” he warns.

Compactness is usually about getting the optimum drive solution, and many gearbox manufacturers strive for such compactness and the lower weight that it brings.

Radicon has a standard product line of very high-quality compact gear reducers which match the dimensions of many other manufacturers to offer interchangeability. However, for some applications, compactness can come at the cost of reducing ultimate robustness and also lowering the thermal ratings of the gearbox.

“The gearcase and shafts are the backbone of a gearbox, and so they need to be robust,” explains Richard.

“We need to ensure they don’t flex, as that could cause adverse wear to internal components and lead to early failure. It is not just the torque capacity that defines the strength of the gearbox.

The entire unit has to be well made and robust. A gearbox with a suitable torque rating but designed for compactness may not necessarily hold up to the more extreme applications as well so the correct balance needs to be struck between these factors.”

Torque and thermal ratings are also crucial. Gearboxes for power generation typically have to transmit high powers and torques.

The majority of Radicon and Elecon’s customers in the power industry are looking for units that can supply the most power in the smallest footprint as possible. Over the years, both Radicon and Elecon have developed a significant understanding of the delicate balance between size and weight on one hand and robustness and reliability on the other.

GEARS

Another potential downside to compactness is that often the gearbox does not have enough mass to allow it to lose heat effectively, leading to higher running temperatures and at worse overheating and catastrophic failures due to lubrication issues.

“It is all too easy to select a gearbox on just its torque rating,” says Richard. “Quite often people forget about the thermal rating of the gearbox, particularly for medium to large gear units.

“The thermal rating of a medium or large unit can be less than the nominal power rating and severe problems can occur when the unit ends up in higher power applications or higher ambient temperatures.”

In these situations, Radicon can supply additional cooling accessories to increase the thermal capacity of the gearbox.

Alternatively, the customer can opt for a larger unit with a better thermal rating.

“Many power applications are usually in remote or less accessible locations and could well be supplying critical power to essential infrastructure where unexpected downtime must be avoided at all costs,” comments Richard.

“Our customers need peace of mind of a reliable and uninterrupted power supply.

Gearbox performance, reliability, extended maintenance periods and also whole life costs are no doubt high on their priority lists, further supported by facilities such as remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.”

Technology is affecting every industry, and Radicon is no different.

“It’s amazing to think that we can now dial into units and pull data out of them, which can help us prevent problems developing.

“We’ve learnt a lot over the years about the importance of preventative maintenance and how to work best with our customers to deliver that. I think we will continue to refine the way we work and as we go forwards, we will see increasing demand for more power from less energy input.”

In the 87 years since the Radicon name first appeared people have relied upon gearboxes. While we don’t know what the next 87 years will have in store for the power industry, it is a reasonable assumption that the gearbox will continue to be the unsung hero.

BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR NEXT-GENERATION NORWEGIAN TECHNOLOGY

N

idec ASI, the Nidec Industrial Solutions platform belonging to the Nidec Group, has supplied battery energy storage systems (BESS) for the latest vessel developed by Brødrene Aa, a Norwegian company which builds cutting-edge ships.

Nidec has implemented a BESS solution which allows the Seasight IV ship to sail electrically and silently, without producing any polluting emissions, thus guaranteeing maximum respect for the entire marine ecosystem, while at the same time ensuring completely safe sailing.

The project is in response to the need to comply with a decision of the Norwegian Parliament which, by 2026, will restrict the movement of vessels within the fjords to electric ferries only, creating zero-emission waterways, a move designed to benefit the health and wellbeing of the local population.

This is a Norwegian direction which the whole of Europe should be following, says Nidec: in fact, it has been calculated that in just 10 hours a cruise ship docked at a quay produces approximately the same amount of CO2 as 25 medium-sized cars in a year.

Seasight is a catamaran characterised by an unusual design, inspired by the Norwegian paths that zig-zag up the steep mountain slopes.

The vessel gives passengers a chance to admire the breathtaking scenery of the Norwegian fjords on the external decks which surround the internal lounge.

This new vessel represents the third testament to the successful collaboration between Nidec ASI and Brødrene Aa. Together they have already designed and launched two other catamarans: one hybrid (the “Vision of the Fjords”) and one fully electric (“Future of the Fjords”, which won the 2018 Ship of the Year award), which carry tourists along the splendid coast of Norway, silently, safely and reliably, providing a new and more sustainable approach to tourism.

Like the two previous Seasight vessels Nidec ASI worked on, the company provided the BESS solutions with two 1200kW-1009kWh systems for a total of 2018kWh (2.4MW), symmetrically located on the port and starboard.

However, what makes the Seasight IV’s system unique is the rack modules set-up, greater than those on the sister ships and significantly improved at a technical level. Nidec also supplied the data recording equipment, the battery management system and a closed circuit air cooling system which works thanks to an air-water heat exchanger.

ALTERNATORS: GENUINE VERSUS COUNTERFEIT

A

n emergency standby alternator is an independent source of electric energy which supports critical systems in the event that a normal source of power, often the electric grid, ceases to provide electric power. An alternator used to supply standby power is used only when the normal source of power has failed.

Depending on how reliable the normal source of power is, in some geographical areas, this could mean that a standby alternator is used only a couple of times a year.

These alternators are also expected to provide higher electric output ratings above what they would produce if they were to be operated on a continuous mode.

As such, when in operation, they run at higher heat levels than what the insulating materials used in their design and construction can tolerate, which reduces their useful life by two to six times. When considering these factors, some may question the worth of investing in a source of power which may not be used as often, or even last as long as it would were it to be operated on a continuous mode.

With this in mind, it’s easy to see why settling for a cheap standby alternator would seem appealing. But, as is the case with every commodity, a higher price typically translates to better quality, even for alternators. In the quest to purchase a cheaper alternator, what ends up happening in some cases is that customers fall into the trap of investing in counterfeit machines.

However, sacrificing quality over cost sometimes has much greater consequences than some would think, and the benefits realised by having a quality source of standby power go well beyond the monetary investment made at purchase. The consequences of losing electric power are mostly not apparent until it happens. The impact felt by the loss of electricity could mean the loss of substantial amounts of revenue for some industries, or even the loss of life for others depending upon the nature of the devices, machinery, and processes for which critical electric power is needed.

In the case of a data centre for example, the lack of quality standby power could result in problems as unassuming as not being able to perform simple internet searches, to problems as complex as the loss of critical records of information for an organisation, or even the damaging of hardware used to store these records. In the instance of a telecommunications company, imagine not being able to place an emergency call because the company supporting your phone network lacks reliable standby power in the event of a power outage.

In the healthcare industry, having a constant source of electric power is of paramount importance. Surgeries

which rely on multiple electronic devices cannot afford to be jeopardized due to unreliable standby power.

From ensuring that a manufacturing facility continues to operate at peak performance to helping keep patients alive, it is difficult to understand why one would sacrifice on quality over cost. Considering the examples explored here, why risk serious consequences in the name of saving money by purchasing counterfeit alternators? “By replacing the engine of the Dräger cogeneration power plant, we want to achieve even more carbon savings and improve the profitability”, says Sören Sievertsen, project manager at Stadtwerke Lübeck.

In the past, the cogeneration power plant was operated directly by Dräger; now, this will be handled by Stadtwerke Lübeck under a contracting arrangement.

The heat-controlled cogeneration power plant supplies heat energy and power for Dräger and heat energy for various service providers on the premises.

All of the generated heat is used for heating the workplaces in the factory halls and offices, and almost all of the 1 MWh of power (per hour) that will henceforth be produced will be used locally and will not be fed into the local power grid.

“In this way, we are able to cut Dräger’s power costs, as selfgenerated power is not subject to additional levies”, explains Björn Verwold, account manager at Stadtwerke Lübeck.

CALIFORNIA MAKES HISTORY WITH BATTERY & GAS TURBINE HYBRID

G

E Power Services business, together with Southern California Edison (SCE), in collaboration with Wellhead Power Solutions, LLC, recently installed the world’s first battery storage and gas turbine hybrid.

The goal of the project was to quell concerns around changing regulations and grid requirements following California’s Aliso Canyon energy emergency. The project will reinforce California’s grid, resulting in increased renewable energy and fuel savings.

SCE, a utility which provides more than 15 million people with power, has won six awards for the project, including two for innovation, one for clean air, and even one from Power Engineering for Best Overall Project.

“GE’s new LM6000 Hybrid EGT product fits well with SCE’s objective of providing cost–effective, innovative solutions that enhance grid reliability, flexibility, and fast response to our customers,” said Phil Herrington, vice president of Generation for SCE. As part of the project, GE installed a 10 MW battery energy storage system in the LM6000 Hybrid EGT followed by gas turbine controls upgrades to integrate the two systems.

SCE estimates that the systems will use 2 million fewer gallons of water to operate, as well as reduce emissions by 60%. Additionally, the Hybrid EGT’s fast-start capabilities mean that it can produce spinning reserve power, making it even more valuable for SCE. The LM6000 Hybrid EGT product integrates a 10 MW battery energy storage system from Current and an existing GE LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine with control system upgrades provided by GE’s Power Services.

The system will allow the turbine to operate in standby mode without using fuel and enable immediate response to changing energy dispatch needs. By eliminating the need to constantly run the turbines at minimum loads to maintain spinning reserves, the LM6000 Hybrid EGT will save fuel, reduce maintenance costs and cut down on carbon emissions, reports GE. Vibhu Kaushik, director of grid technology and modernization at SCE comments: “Renewable and energy storage provide the perfect combination

where you can harness renewable energy and match the supply to how the demand is shaped on the grid.”

The Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility (Aliso Canyon), located in the Santa Susana Mountains of Los Angeles County, is the largest natural gas storage facility in California.

Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) crews discovered a leak at a natural gas storage well at Aliso Canyon on October 23rd, 2015.

After several attempts, SoCalGas stopped the leak on February 12th, 2016, sealing the well on February 15th, 2016. It was subsequently plugged and abandoned.

On July 19th, 2017, after inspection and analyses of all the wells at Aliso Canyon, the CPUC, along with the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM, formerly known as the Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources, or DOGGR), determined that the facility was safe to operate, and it was reopened at a reduced capacity.

CalGEM, which has primary jurisdiction over Aliso Canyon’s underground facilities, determined the maximum allowable operating

pressure in the field to be 2,926 psi, which translates to an inventory of 68.6 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas.

This is a 17.4 Bcf reduction compared to Aliso Canyon’s pre-leak capacity of 86 Bcf. The CPUC also developed the Aliso Canyon Withdrawal Protocol, which is a protocol describing the process to be followed before making a withdrawal from the Aliso Canyon storage facility.

The Withdrawal Protocol is developed with input from the California Energy Commission (CEC), the California independent System Operator (CAISO), and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), together known as “the Joint Agencies.”

The CPUC works closely with the Joint Agencies to monitor the availability of natural gas in Southern California, protect public safety, and ensure energy reliability in the region.

Since 2016, the CPUC has worked with the Joint Agencies to develop Summer and Winter Technical Assessments which assess energy reliability challenges in Southern California in the coming season. www.ge.com

PUTTING CUSTOMERS AT THE HEART OF OUR PANDEMIC RESPONSE, SAYS HEAT NETWORKS INDUSTRY COUNCIL A new consumer protection agreement was agreed (1st May 2020) between members of the Heat Networks Industry Council.

Measures agreed include ensuring all customers remain supplied with energy,heating and hot water through challenging times and supporting customers in financial distress.

Commitments in the agreement include identifying and prioritising customers at risk, supporting customers who are impacted financially, supporting prepayment meter customers to stay on supply and providing information, advice and guidance to customers on what help is available.

The agreement is signed by the following organisations, representing heat network providers to tens of thousands of customers: Dan McGrail in his role as Chair of the Heat Networks Industry Council, EDF Energy, ENGIE, Energetik, E.ON, Pinnacle Power, SSE Heat Networks Ltd, Switch2, Vattenfall, Veolia and Vital Energi.

The Council encourages heat network companies in the UK to sign up to these commitments and the Association for Decentralised Energy(ADE), on behalf of the Council, will maintain a public updated list of signatories to this agreement.

The Council and the ADE met the Energy and Clean Growth Minister, to discuss the impact of the pandemic on the heat networks industry and will continue to work constructively with Government throughout this period.

Energy and Clean Growth Minister, Kwasi Kwarteng, said: “The coronavirus pandemic is affecting every household in this country.

“It is vital that customers know there is support available if they have difficulty in paying their energy bills. “ He concludes: “Today’s consumer protection agreement means that those heat network operators who sign up are committing to providing the best possible support they can to their customers. I would urge them all to sign up.”

Does White or Black Smoke From a Generator Exhaust Mean an Injector Problem?

White smoke often occurs when there is either too much fuel being injected into the combustion chamber, or not enough heat to burn the fuel. Unburned fuel travels through the exhaust system & exits out the exhaust which will produce a scent of rich, un-burnt diesel, this can be caused by worn/leaking injectors.

Black Smoke

Black smoke indicates excess fuel is being injected into the combustion chamber and/or not enough air is present. This can be caused by worn/ leaking injectors.

ATLAS COPCO’S NEW QAS GENERATORS BOOST SNOWMAKING CAPACITY OF CHILE SKI RESORT To combat unseasonably low snow cover and to maintain optimal slope conditions, Ski Portillo in Chile now has five times more snowmaking capacity thanks to the installation of four Atlas Copco QAS generators powering 25 snow cannons. Chile brings together world-class snow destinations that are key businesses for tourism and an industry of great relevance for the country’s economy. Annually the country receives almost one and a half million visitors to its ski centres such as Portillo, the oldest ski area in South America.

In order to ensure ideal ski conditions on many of the resort’s intermediate slopes at times of lower than average snowfall, Ski Portillohas had to complement natural snowfall with sufficient man-made snow to cover nine snow tracks over an area of 10 hectares. During the 2019 season, a new snowmaking system was installed comprising 25 snow cannons positioned throughout slopes. These are powered by a bank of four skid-mounted Atlas Copco QAS 630 generators, housed in a plant room adjacent to the main complex.

As a result, snowmaking capacity has been boosted to five times that of the previous season and it is now possible to create up to 16 inches of new snow over a 70-hour time period, with equipment functioning day and night if the ambient temperatures will allow.

Snow cannons require two climatic variables for their operation, a specific environmental temperature and a percentage of air humidity. When the system detects these conditions, the snow generation cycle starts up gradually. Whether it is to run for just a couple of hours or operate a full 24/7 session, it relies 100% on the power supply from the QAS machines as a single source of energy. The new system is fully automated which allows maintenance teams to control and monitor the status of each machine at all times – even from a smart phone.
