CORONAVIRUS AFFECTS THE GENSET MANUFACTURING SECTOR Coronavirus will have a greater impact on global trade than the US-China trade war, knocking off $26bn a week in lost exports, suggest the latest reports. The weekly loss will be equivalent to a rise in the world import tariff on goods by 1 percentage point - more than the effect of the trade spat last year, which was 0.7 percentage points, calculates Euler Hermes, the company which insures payments to exporters. The effects have already influenced the supply and demand sides as manufacturing production stalls, exports to China fall and nations adopt the policy of isolation.

This represents nearly 6% of global emissions during the same period in 2019.

LEHI CITY POWER UTILISES A SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION SYSTEM

NEW FORTRESS ENERGY IN NICARAGUA

With the rapid development of the tech industry, the population of Lehi, Utah has increased by 134 percent since 2000. To keep up with this growth, Lehi City Power sought to replace its outdated facility with a new $17.5 million campus, which includes a distributed energy facility used for peak shaving to offset the occasionally high cost of grid power.

Lehi belongs to Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), which provides wholesale electric energy, transmission, and other energy services.

New Fortress Energy LLC has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with Distribuidora de Electricidad del Norte, S.A. and Distribuidora de Electricidad del Sur, S.A., two of Nicaragua’s electricity distribution companies. As part of the agreement, New Fortress will construct a natural gasfired power plant with a capacity of approximately 300 megawatts near Puerto Sandino to supply power to Nicaragua’s national electric grid. The plant is expected to contribute to the advancement of the country’s long-term economic development.

This experiment, known as ‘Ringo’, involves the installation of the first energy storage system on mainland in France.

IREN SIGNS A €180 MILLION CONTRACT WITH ANSALDO ENERGIA

DELIVERING UTILITY-SCALE PROJECTS ACROSS AFRICA

Iren S.p.A., through its subsidiary Iren Energia S.p.A., signed a contract with Ansaldo Energia for the new combined gas cycle development, with an investment of approximately €180 million, which will increase installed capacity at the Turbigo site, which is all natural gas fed.

There are two major milestones for Lekela. The first is the official opening of Lekela’s flagship Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye (PETN) project in Senegal, the first-ever utility-scale wind power in West Africa. Secondly, in In Egypt, initial construction has begun on the 250MW West Bakr Wind project.

MPower has specified 12 x 2,750 kVA generating sets - capable of delivering a total of 33 MW - equipped with MTU 20V400G63L engines and 11 kV AvK® DIG 140k-4L generators. This will be used to power a massive project underway off the coast of Western Australia, building one of the world’s largest natural gas development sites. The Chevron-operated Gorgon Project is developing the Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields. It includes the construction of a three-train, 15.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Barrow Island and a domestic gas plant too.

Biopower is a joint venture between Havana Energy and Azbuba, owner of all Cuba’s sugar production assets. Biopower has been formed to finance, build own and operate five power plants burning bagasse during the sugar crushing season, and marabu, an endemic woody weed covering 2 million hectares of farmland) during the off season. The first plant has a net output of 57MW and is located adjacent to the Ciro Redondo sugar mill in Ciego de Avila province.

There is enough marabou already growing within 30km of the plant to sustain the power plant forever if it is harvested and simply allowed to regrow.

IN BRIEF ANSALDO ENERGIA & ABB WIN ORDER WORTH 70 MILLION EUROS The scope of supply for Ansaldo Energia, which heads the Temporary Association of Companies, includes the design, supply, commissioning and maintenance of three synchronous condensers, each rated 250 MVAR, for installation in Central and Southern Italy.

The order includes supplying two synchronous condensers. The installation of the three units will be completed in 2022. Synchronous condensers are electric generator applications which, when connected to the Terna transmission grid, exchange reactive energy with it and increase the short-circuit power. They also contribute inertia to the power grid, increasing stability.

HAVILA VOYAGES SELECTS CLIMEON FOR ALL FOUR NEW SHIPS - WASTE HEAT WILL BE RECOVERED FROM ENGINES Climeon has received an order from Norwegian Havila Voyages to install CHP systems on four newly-built vessels.

Havila Voyages’ four ships Havila Capella, Havila Castor, Havila Polaris and Havila Pollux are all 122,7 meters long, 22 metres wide and able to carry 640 passengers. The ships will be powered by a hybrid LNG (liquefied natural gas) and battery system. The battery packs will allow the ships to sail without noise and emissions for up to four hours.

The combination of LNG, batteries and innovative technologies such as Climeon’s Heat Power system will make the vessels the most environmentally-friendly cruise ships in service along the Norwegian coast, according to Havila Voyages.

The four ships are currently being built in Tersan in Turkey. Climeon’s Heat Power systems will be delivered during 2021 and 2022. ”We are happy that an established company such as Havila takes the sustainability issue seriously and therefore has decided to recover the waste heat when they build new cruise ships,” comments Thomas Öström, CEO of Climeon.

DOMINION ENERGY LAUNCH NEW BATTERY STORAGE PROJECTS IN US Energy company Dominion Energy Virginia has won approval from Virginia’s State Corporation Commission (SCC) to build four battery storage pilot projects in the US. The approval will pave the way for additional energy storage technology, required to support the company’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon and methane emissions by 2050.

The four central Virginia-based projects totalling 16MW will cost approximately $33m to construct and will provide key information on distinct use cases for batteries on the energy grid.

Once operational in the first quarter of next year, the company will evaluate them

for a period of five years.

Dominion Energy generation construction vice-president Mark Mitchell said: “Dominion Energy will pilot these 16MW of battery storage to better understand how best to deploy batteries across our system to integrate renewables and provide grid reliability by filling gaps due to the inherent intermittency of solar and wind power.”

Said to be the largest projects of their kind in Virginia, the utility-scale battery storage pilot projects are enabled by the Grid Transformation & Security Act of 2018 that allows Dominion Energy to invest in battery projects with up to 30MW capacity.

RTU POWER PLANT PRODUCES FIRST FGD GYPSUM AT THE RTU THERMAL POWER FACILITY IN BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

A new plant built by MHPS-E at the RTU thermal power facility in Bosnia and Herzegovina has produced first FGD gypsum.

The commissioning of the desulphurisation plant also initiated the commissioning of the FGD Gypsum silo which ESI Eurosilo completed in early 2019. The commissioning proved very successful and the company finalised the project.

As the Ugljevik thermal power plant dates back to 1985, the outdated environmental safety standards of the power plant required major improvement to comply with the European standards.

Clean air in a densely populated region means a ‘license-to-operate’ for another 25 years or more. MHPS-E was responsible for providing a state-of-the-art desulphurisation plant designed to reduce emissions by 98%. With the new equipment in place, the emission levels have almost reached zero.

ESI project manager Jan-Willem Hanskamp explains: “Integrating a new desulphurisation plant in an existing power plant site means that there is very limited space for logistics solutions to store the produced FGD gypsum. This is one of the main reasons that MHSP-E chose to work with the ESI Eurosilo system in Ugljevik. The all-in-one FGD Gypsum silo integrates dewatering on top, storage with a slotted column inside to reclaim the stored material and truck loading underneath. At the request of MHPS-E, we have implemented a high level of redundancy in the silo control. The system has a redundant power supply.

This is to maximise the availability and to meet the overall power plant standards.”

GAS TURBINE DEPLOYED AT BLUE HILLS PLANT, BAHAMAS Bahamas Power & Light Company Ltd. (BPL), the state-owned electric company which provides service to approximately 110,000 customers, recently installed a GE’s TM2500 mobile aeroderivative gas turbine in its Blue Hills plant.

The unit will supply up to 34 MW, enough energy to power the residential consumption of between 12,000 and 18,000 customers, and may potentially help stabilise the country’s grid.

The installation and commissioning of the equipment was completed in only 42 days. The deployment of the mobile gas turbine by GE Gas Power will potentially support the improvement of frequency control of the grid, and help reduce power outages.

ABB’s digital solutions and engineering services will improve availability and reliability of power in the State of Paraná, with ABB winning a $US2.5m contract to upgrade Copel’s Governador José Richa hydro power plant.

ABB will provide excitation systems and speed regulation for four generator units at the 20-year-old Governador José Richa hydro power plant on the Iguazu River, and help Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia) enhance visibility of its operational data using predictive diagnostics. The hydro power plant produces 1240 MW of installed power, with capacity to meet the power demands of ap-

prox.4.5 million residents, or 40% of Paraná’s population.

“The upgrade of the excitation system and the turbine speed regulators and their integration into the ABB Ability™ 800xA automation system will improve the performance and reliability of this hydroelectric power plant,” said Maurício Cunha, Head of Industrial Automation, ABB Brazil.

IN BRIEF POWER GENERATION ACQUIRES 100% OF THE SHARES IN B&A SERVICES AND B&A PROJECTS Power Generation b.v, the parent company of Zwart, acquired 100% of the shares in B&A Services and B&A Projects. Zwart is a leading European provider of hybrid & emergency power solutions.

With this transaction, the company has significantly expanded its portfolio of solutions and has further strengthened its service organisation.

“This is a fantastic step in the continued growth and development of our portfolio of hybrid and emergency power solutions,” reports Jim Craig, Managing Director of Zwart.

The businesses will continue to be run by the existing management teams with no impact on the current activities of the 31 employees of B&A and the 95 employees of Zwart.

Zwart’s strategy is to deliver an integrated total solution to its customers and the high-quality project and service solutions delivered by B&A are an excellent fit with the activities and strategy of Zwart.

BATTERIES TO PROVIDE REACTIVE POWER SERVICE Batteries will be used to provide a reactive power service as part of a landmark trial in the South East of England.

Zenobe Energy will use batteries with 10MW capacity, in its King Barn facility in Sussex to provide a reactive power service to National Grid ESO, via UK Power Networks’ distribution network. This is part of the Power Potential project, a world-first project to enable generators on the distribution network to automatically provide reactive power services to National Grid’s transmission network. Reactive power is used to control voltage levels, keeping them at a safe and efficient level for electricity transportation and consumption. The batteries will absorb and generate reactive power when needed, which will alleviate capacity challenges.

HAVYARD IS READYING TO PILOT TEST OF A HYDROGEN FUEL SYSTEM FOR LARGE SHIPS WITH ZERO-EMISSIONS If large vessels are required to produce zero emissions at high speed over long distances, battery solutions do not provide them with enough energy, suggest representatives of the Norwegian shipyard, Havyard. Instead, fuel cells running on hydrogen are the obvious solution, says the company.

Today, the Havyard Group, with Havyard Design & Solutions and Norwegian Electric Systems (NES), are developing a power systemwhich potentially could become the biggest of its kind for ships.

The project is now entering the approval stage for the hydrogen system together with Linde Engineering as tank supplier and PowerCell Sweden as supplier of fuel cells. The Havyard companies, together with PowerCell and Linde, have designed a hydrogen solution and will shortly take the first step towards certification.

The technical solution will be offered to Havila Kystruten for retrofitting. Havila Kystruten is a Norwegian ropax company. Using hydrogen energy, a Kystruten vessel is expected to be able to sail half the coastal route from Bergen to Kirkenes without producing any emissions, so a voyage through UNESCO World Heritage fjords would be totally emission-free.

Havila Kystruten already has the world’s biggest battery packs and a design which supports the most energy-efficient vessels. The emission requirements in the Norwegian tenders for new ferries have led to speedy developments in battery tech, but sailing long distances with such vessels demands so much energy that hydrogen remains one of few available solutions.

Havyard project manager Kristian Osnes says Linde’s participation will ensure the development of safe storage and control barriers for cryogenic hydrogen onboard ships.

“The regulations for these solutions have not yet been developed, and we are pleased to have Linde onboard when entering the approval process, which we expect to be very challenging.”

Osnes says that fuel cells have similarities with the battery technology which NES has already employed in a number of ferry projects. However, the hydrogen market, the hydrogen supply logistics system and the regulations for the solutions remain to be fully developed.

NEW BATTERY DEVELOPMENT WILL HAVE MAJOR EFFECT ON INDEPENDENT POWER GENERATION Nikola Corp. has announced details of a new battery that the company claims has a record energy density of 1100 watt-hours per kg on the material level, and 500 watt-hours per kg on the production cell level and is expected to cost 50% less to produce than lithium-ion batteries.

Nikola said its prototype cell is the first battery which removes binder material and current collectors, enabling more energy storage within the cell. It is also expected to pass nail penetration standards, thus reducing potential vehicle fires.

“This is the biggest advancement we have seen in the battery world,” said Trevor Milton, CEO, Nikola Motor Co. “We are not talking about small improvements – we are talking about doubling your cell phone battery capacity. We are talking about doubling the range of BEVs and

hydrogen-electric vehicles around the world.

The company said the new battery technology could increase the range of current EV passenger cars from 300 miles to 600 miles with little or no increase to battery size and weight.

Moreover, cycling the cells over 2000 times has shown acceptable end-of-life performance, the company said. Nikola said the new cell technology is also environmentally-friendly and easy to recycle.

With the new technology, Nikola said its battery electric trucks could drive 800 miles fully loaded between charges, the company said. With the new batteries weighing 40% less than comparable lithium-ion batteries, the vehicles could weigh 5000 lb. less than competitive vehicles if the same battery size was kept.

IN BRIEF TENNET GAINS BORWIN3 GRID CONNECTION The BorWin3 offshore wind grid connection project in the German North Sea has been handed over to the German/Dutch transmission grid operator TenneT. The 900 MW project converts threephase electric power generated by offshore wind farms into direct current and transmits it 160kms to shore into the German national grid, from where it will now supply more than one million of the country’s households with clean electricity from wind power.

Petrofac, in consortium with Siemens, was awarded the project contract in 2014, with responsibility for the engineering, procurement, construction, transport and installation of the platform offshore. The platform was installed in October 2018.

WEG WILL PRODUCE LOW VOLTAGE ELECTRIC MOTORS IN INDIA - INVESTMENT OF APPROXIMATELY US$20 MILLION WEG is planning to install a new low voltage electric motor plant in Hosur, India.

With investments of approximately US$ 20 million, the plant will contain 13,000 square metres of built area with the capacity to produce up to 250,000 electric motors per year, reaching powers of up to 355 kW. In addition to the production of low voltage electric motors, the unit will also have product development and application engineering services, sales and technical assistance to serve customers in this market.

According to Luis Alberto Tiefensee, WEG Motors Managing Director, the new unit will facilitate the company’s penetration of the low-voltage motor market in India and expand its participation in the local market with new opportunities.

“In addition to increasing our production portfolio located in India and strengthening distribution capacity, we will be able to enter a very promising market by maintaining our quality standard in both products and service. We are increasingly strengthening our presence as a Global Player in low voltage electric motors,” explains Tiefensee.

The new unit, expected to start operating in 2021, will be built in the same place where WEG already has a factory for medium and high voltage induction motors and synchronous and asynchronous generators, and will employ approximately 320 new employees. WEG started its activities in India in 2011, with a factory with 32,000 square metres built on an area of 170,000 square meters. The unit serves Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania, and employs 800 people in the country.

£1M FUNDING FOR WAVE ENERGY DEVELOPER IN SCOTLAND Malin Renewables has won a £1 million contract to supply a 50-tonne wave energy converter named Archimedes Waveswing.

Malin Renewables, which has been appointed by AWS Ocean Energy, will build the the device which resembles a giant buoy which converts the motion of waves into electricity.

The development of the unit, which is funded by Wave Energy Scotland, will allow the technology to be tested further and will give the engineering teams additional data for creating the equipment in different sizes.

hydraulics, electrical power, air systems, pressure vessels and mooring, delivering an integral piece of equipment for the wave energy sector.”

The Archimedes Waveswing™ wave energy converter concept is classed as a submerged point absorber device. This project is expected to yield some significant improvements to its previous economic performance.

The original Waveswing concept was tested and demonstrated at large scale offshore Portugal in 2004 however the configuration did not provide an economic solution at that time.

TOSHIBA WINS CONTRACT TO RETROFIT STEAM TURBINES & GENSETS FOR THERMAL POWER PLANT IN AUSTRALIA

IN BRIEF

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation announced that its Australian subsidiary, Toshiba International Corporation Pty. Ltd. (hereinafter TIC), has won a major contract.

This involves retrofitting steam turbines, generators, and associated equipment as part of the modernisation project of EnergyAustralia’s Mt Piper Power Station in Portland, Australia, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based China Light and Power. The overall retrofit work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021.

The first unit of the Mt Piper Power Station started commercial operation in 1992 and the second unit started in 1993. The steam turbines, generators and associated equipment were supplied by Toshiba ESS for both units. These units can generate enough energy to meet around 15% of New South Wales energy demand.

The project will increase Mt Piper’s output from 1400MW to 1460MW of critical base load generation that is equivalent to the needs of 55,000 homes without any increase in coal consumption or emissions. The increase in output will be achieved through the replacement/upgrade of major equipment including steam turbine, generator and heat exchangers. TIC won the order on the strength of Toshiba ESS’s world leading high efficiency steam path design, local service capabilities and proven results providing major thermal upgrades globally.

Azelio has completed the installation of its renewable energy storage with 24-hour clean power production at Noor Ouarzazate solar complex in Morocco.

The installation is a partial result in a joint technical and business development agreement between Azelio and Masen. It was inaugurated during an official ceremony in Morocco held on March 5th, 2020.

A verification of the storage will be initiated during the first quarter of 2020, with commercial installations later the same year, followed by volume production in 2021.

Azelio has developed a solution to efficiently store renewable energy from solar

and wind power and make it available all hours of the day as electricity and heat.

The system uses recycled aluminum as a storage medium, containing no rare minerals and suffers no reduced capacity over time.

The system is scalable from 100 kW to 100 MW and by that fills a void in the market towards the goal of universal access to affordable and sustainable energy.

ACCEPTANCE OF CLEANER GAS-POWERED GENERATORS ON THE RISE IN EUROPE

POWER STORAGE IS EXPECTED TO PLAY A ROLE IN INCREASING GAS GENSETS SALES Stringent environmental regulations, declining gas prices, and increasing demand for flexible transmission of renewable power have sparked a growing interest in gas-powered generator sets in Europe.

A recent analysis by Frost & Sullivan shows that the market revenue for gas gensets in Europe is expected to expand at a CAGR of 5.3%, from $307.2 million in 2018 to $441.6 million by 2025, while unit sales are set to increase at a CAGR of 3.2%, reaching 2,034 units by 2025.

“As Europe moves towards meeting its emission reductions targets by 2030, the gas gensets market is positioned for fairly good growth in the near future,” said Jonathan Robinson, Global Energy Program Lead at Frost & Sullivan.

“Gas gensets are expected to gain market share among end-user segments that were dominated by diesel gensets as the region moves towards lower-emission fuel sources.”

GENSET IN URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT IN MADRID

T

his month MWM is working to complete the renewal of the Spanish wastewater treatment plant, Viveros de la Villa, in Madrid.

In the three-phased project the last unit of the cogeneration plant will be replaced with a 400kWel MWM TCG 3016 V08 genset for a higher electrical power and efficiency of the WWTP. Located in the north of Madrid the Viveros de la Villa WWTP deals with urban wastewater discharges of 700,000 inhabitants distributed in large residential areas and towns of the periphery.

Three-phased renewal project replaces older gensets with high-performance MWM gas gensets In 1984 the treatment plant operated three gensets with 455 kWel each. After 25 years of operation in 2009 one unit got first replaced with a 716 kWel MWM TCG 2016 V16 genset.

With this MWM engine a higher electrical power was achieved as well as an electrical efficiency of 40.3% and an overall efficiency of 81.8%.

During this phase Caterpillar Energy Solutions in addition supplied a whole series of auxiliaries, for example control panels, water pumps and oil tanks, providing a comprehensive and expanded scope for power generation and heat utilisation.

In 2017, the second phase of the project, another unit got replaced with a 600 kWel MWM TCG 2016 V12C genset, with an electrical performance of 42.5% and an overall efficiency of 83.2%.

In the third phase of the project the renewal of the cogeneration plant will be completed. The third and last unit will be replaced with a 400 kWel MWM TCG 3016 V08 genset.

This genset has an electrical performance of 42.3% and an overall performance of 83.1%. The TCG 3016 V08 provides maximum efficiency for a higher performance and reliability of the plant as well as low operating costs.

Additionally, the MWM gas engine will be supplied with the latest generation of the digital control system TPEM (Total Plant & Energy Management).

In the last phase of the project Caterpillar Energy Solutions, besides the MWM TCG 3016 V08 genset, again will provide the mechanical installation and auxiliary. The commissioning of the WWTP is planned forThis month. Once the final phase of the project

is completed, the Viveros de la Villa will have a total power generation capacity of 1,716 kWel thanks to the three MWM gas engines.

According to the MODEC website, MV34: “The FPSO will be capable of processing 90,000 barrels of crude oil per day, 75 million cubic feet of gas per day, 120,000 barrels of water injection per day and have a storage capacity of 900,000 barrels of crude oil.”

The rig will be deployed off the coast of Mexico at a water depth of less than 40 metres.

HEINEKEN REFRESHES PARTS OTHER RENEWABLES CANNOT REACH

berdrola and HEINEKEN have signed a partnership which will allow the company brew its beers using only renewable energy.

The project is said to be a significant advance in Iberdrola’s investment in renewables in Spain where it plans to install 3,000 MW by 2022- through bilateral agreements that promote the supply of power at affordable, stable prices to big customers who are committed to sustainable consumption.

The long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) reached by the two companies will help to bring a new photovoltaic plant in Andévalo into operation in 2020.

The Andévalo plant, which will avoid the emission of over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, forms part of the brewer’s plan for all its production to use renewable energies by 2023, making HEINEKEN España an industry benchmark for sustainability Iberdrola and HEINEKEN España have added to their commitment to sustainability as a strategic thrust in their businesses with the first long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Spain between an electricity supplier and a brewing group.

The agreement reached by the two companies will promote the construction of a new photovoltaic plant in Andévalo, which will guarantee the supply of green electricity to the four breweries and offices of HEINEKEN España. The plant will become operational in 2020, in PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) mode, avoiding the mission into the atmosphere of over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.

Andévalo forms part of Iberdrola’s strategy of investing in clean power generation projects in Spain - where it plans to install 3,000 MW by 2022- and its commitment to using bilateral agreements with big customers who are committed to sustainable consumption as a way to promote the supply of energy at affordable, stable prices.

Through this partnership HEINEKEN España will be able to brew its beer using only renewable energies by 2023. To achieve this, HEINEKEN is implementing an ambitious road map which, among other initiatives, encompasses a 100% renewable electricity supply.

Located in the municipality of Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva) and with a surface area of 150 ha., the project will have an installed capacity of 50 MW and will consist of 147,000, 340 Wp polycrystalline silicon modules which will generate 82 GWh/yr. The plant will be built inside the biggest wind farm in continental Europe, El Andévalo (292 MW), developed and managed by Iberdrola since 2010.

THREE G3520H GENERATOR SETS PRODUCING 7.2MW FOR LEHI CITY POWER, UTAH Located behind the new 17,000 square-foot office of Lehi City Power, the Broadbent Generation Facility first opened in March 2018. It has three Cat G3520H generator sets which produce 7.2 MW of power during times of peak demand, when energy prices are high. This typically occurs during the summer months in the USA, reports WIP.

ositioned on the edge of Salt Lake and Utah counties at the north end of Utah Lake, Lehi sits at the nexus of technology firms migrating from California. The region encompasses a cluster of information technology, software development, and hardware manufacturing and research firms along the Wasatch Front.

With companies such as Adobe, Microsoft, and Xactware putting down roots within its service territory - and with a 134% increase in population since 2000 - Lehi City Power realised it was time to replace its outdated facility with a new campus to keep pace with the explosive growth.

In 2011, city officials began a four-year planning process which ultimately led to the selection of Cat dealer Wheeler Machinery to serve as general contractor for a $17.5 million campus, which includes the main office, warehouse, shop, and a new distributed energy facility used for peak shaving to reduce the sometimes high cost of power from the energy grid.

Peak demand reached 120 megawatts in the summer of 2019 in Lehi. “At the rate we’re growing, we wanted a way to help us address the power needed for our city,” said Cameron Boyle, assistant city administrator, during a groundbreaking ceremony in 2017.

“This helps offset the cost of power we’re purchasing from other sources, and during our peak times, in July and August when everyone is using their air conditioners, we want to have our own ability to generate power to offset the need.”

Lehi belongs to Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), which provides wholesale electric energy, transmission, and other energy services to community-owned power systems throughout the Intermountain West.

As a member of UAMPS, Lehi City can contract with energy providers of its choosing. Some of those energy sources include hydro power, natural gas, and renewables such as wind and solar.

Before coming to Lehi City Power to serve as director, Joel Eves worked for Provo City Power, a nearby municipal utility that commissioned its own new power plant in 2017 with five Cat G3520H gas generator sets.

“I know those people really well, and if I have a problem or I need something, I can call them and they’ll help me out and vice versa,” Eves says.

“The fact that they have the same Cat gensets as we do - I know the exacting detail they would have gone through to make that selection. It gave us some comfort when we made the recommendation to our decision makers to go with Wheeler and Caterpillar for our new generation plant.”

Eves says having the ability to beat the cost of grid power with a local distributed energy system is critical to the future of municipal power systems.

The Cat G3520H genset meets most worldwide emissions standards down to 0.5 grams per brake horsepower-hour. To further reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, Lehi City Power utilises a

The Utah Valley is prone to an inversion that traps pollutants and leads to a visible haze, particularly in the winter months. Much like the new Cat power plant in nearby Provo, Lehi is now one of the cleanest running plants in Utah, Eves says.

“You have to understand the area we’re in to appreciate what that means because we’re in a very poor air quality area - especially in the winter when the inversion locks everything in, Eves says. “So, to have the Utah Department of Air Quality say we’re clean enough to run 24/7 365 for our whole plant is amazing.”

Based on peak demand, the new generation facility can generate approximately 10% of the energy needs for Lehi’s 20,000 power customers. The facility has room to expand, and could eventually accommodate three more G3520H gensets, plus two more 4 MW units.

“As fast as we’re growing, we knew we needed a whole new facility,” Eves says. “So, we knew we had to build up and make the generation facility more than we need today. As we move forward and gain more experience running the plant, market forces will dictate our next move.”

With the rapid development of the tech industry, the population of Lehi, Utah has increased too. To keep up with this growth, Lehi City Power sought to replace its outdated facility with a new $17.5 million campus. One of the new developments included a distributed energy facility used for peak shaving to offset the occasionally high cost of grid power.

Opened in March 2018, the Broadbent Generation Facility has three Cat® G3520H generator sets, which produce 7.2MW of power during times of peak demand. Cat dealer Wheeler Machinery managed all aspects of power systems installations, offering the end user one point of contact during the development phase as well as an experienced electric power dealer to rely on for product support upon project completion.

As a member of Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), Lehi receives wholesale electric energy and other energy services, but it can also contract with other energy providers. A specialist at Lehi monitors the energy market to predict when the cost of grid power will spike. When grid power rates exceed the cost of natural gas, Lehi notifies UAMPS that it will run the generator sets.

“Having our own source of power generation is a hedge, because if we don’t have it then we know we’re just stuck to the market,” says Crystal Robinson, forecast and resources manager for Lehi City Power. “If the market price is high, then we have another option.”

Based on peak demand, the Broadbent Generation Facility can produce up to 10% of Lehi’s energy needs but also has room to accommodate additional gensets in the future.

“Should, for example, prices reach $100 per megawatt hour, if I can start these generators at $40, $35 per megawatt hour, we save all that money,” says Robinson.

Including all operating and maintenance expenses, it costs Lehi $50.73 per megawatt to operate the facility. Current costs to purchase energy from the grid can vary anywhere from $20 to $300 per megawatt hour, depending on demand.

NEW 300MW GAS-FIRED POWER PLANT FOR PUERTO SANDINO TO POWER NICARAGUA’S GRID

N

ew Fortress Energy LLC has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with Distribuidora de Electricidad del Norte, S.A. and Distribuidora de Electricidad del Sur, S.A., two of Nicaragua’s electricity distribution companies.

As part of the agreement, New Fortress will construct a natural gas-fired power plant with a capacity of approximately 300 megawatts near Puerto Sandino to supply power to Nicaragua’s national electric grid.

The plant is expected to contribute to the advancement of the country’s long-term economic development while also assisting the transition to lower-carbon, more environmentally friendly energy sources.

New Fortress will supply natural gas to the plant via an offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving, storage and regasification terminal off the coast of Puerto Sandino.

Under the terms of the PPA, New Fortress is expected to provide more than 21 TBtu of natural gas per year over 25 years, the equivalent of approximately 700,000 gallons of LNG (60,000 MMBtu) per day.

The project is expected to be funded with cash on hand and funds from operations. The terminal and the plant are anticipated to begin commercial operations in the second half of 2021, subject to various conditions, including obtaining required licenses and permits.

Nicaragua is the country in Central America with the lowest electricity generation, as well as the lowest percentage of population with access to electricity.

The unbundling and privatization process of the 1990s did not achieve the expected objectives, resulting in very little generation capacity added to the system.

This, together with its high dependence on oil for electricity generation (the highest in the region), led to an energy crisis in 2006 from which the country has not fully recovered.

The Nicaraguan electricity system comprises the National Interconnected System (SIN), which covers more than 90% of the territory where the population of the country lives (the entire Pacific, Central and North zone of the country).

The remaining regions are covered by small isolated generation systems.

The SIEPAC project will integrate the electricity network of the country with the rest of the Central American countries, which is expected to improve reliability of supply and reduce costs.

restchic, one of the world’s largest suppliers of load bank technology, has recently added vertical-discharge load banks to its rental fleet, offering customers a compact solution with a small operational footprint.

Available as a 1000kW resistive-only load bank, the vertical-exhaust makes the system suitable for use in smaller or more urban areas. By adding the product to the rental fleet, the company is able to fulfil requirements for temporary applications with a limited space.

For the load bank to operate effectively and safely, electrical energy is converted to heat via resistors, which is then air-cooled so that it can dissipate.

The new vertical-discharge load banks, which are available via Crestchic’s rental business, direct this hot air upwards, away from people, buildings or site structures.

‘RINGO’ & LARGE-SCALE ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS Last year Nidec ASI was chosen by the French public electricity transmission system operator, RTE, to develop a full-scale experimental project involving a new electricity storage system being used to optimise management of energy flows on the transmission grid in Vingeanne, France.

T

his experiment, known within the industry as ‘Ringo’, involves the installation of the first energy storage system on mainland in France and aims to prevent grid congestion at times of peak demand by experimenting with the storage of all surplus renewable energy produced (wind and solar) and its subsequent return to the electricity grid.

This is a project which sees battery storage systems become an integral part of modern electricity grids and key elements for realizing the vision of an electric and sustainable future.

Depending on weather conditions (sun, strong winds), local solar or wind energy production can record peaks and exceed the transport capacity of the national electricity grid, resulting in the dispersion of the energy produced.

By storing the excess, the Ringo battery prevents the loss of electricity produced from renewable sources thus contributing to reductions in CO2 emissions, without having to use polluting energy sources. Furthermore, the system makes it possible to better manage the electricity grid, avoiding congestion at times of peak demand.

The Vingeanne site, located in a region of high wind energy production, was chosen as the location for one of the experimental batteries with a storage capacity of 12 MW/24MWh, equal to the amount of energy produced by 5 wind turbines or the consumption of 10,000 families.

Work began in January 2020, while commissioning and testing are expected to begin next year, in March 2021.

Nidec Asi will supply its power electronics converters and the PMS (Power Management System) control system. The batteries are of the NMC (Nickel, Manganese, Cobalt) high energy density lithium-ion type.

With this experiment, RTE and its partners, including Nidec ASI, are participating in the development of large-scale electricity storage.

A spokesman commented: “This is a great industrial challenge to meet the fundamental energy transition from polluting to sustainable and renewable sources, necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate global warming.”

The Ringo project meets the renewable energy development goals set by the French government, which

at the same time as guaranteeing electrical safety, aims to make the electricity transmission grid more flexible by 2030 and to integrate, in particular, large-scale electricity storage solutions.

This storage experiment on three French sites has been approved by the French CRE (Commission de Régulation de l’Energie - Energy Regulatory Commission) and involves a total investment of €80 million.

€180 MILLION CONTRACT FOR A NEW COMBINED GAS CYCLE PROJECT

T

hrough its subsidiary Iren Energia S.p.A., Iren S.p.A. has just signed a contract with Ansaldo Energia to build a new combined gas cycle plant costing approximately €180 million.

This will be built in Turbigo, located in the Province of Milan, Lombardy, located about 35 kilometres (22 miles) west of Milan, in the north of Italy.

This new development will increase installed capacity at the current Turbigo power station site, which is fuelled by natural gas, from the current 850 MW to around 1,280 MW. According to the company this investment demonstrates Iren’s support for the energy transition process, guaranteeing the production security and flexibility needed to balance intermittent renewable sources.

A combined cycle power plant is an assembly of heat engines which work in tandem from the same source of heat, converting it into mechanical energy, sometimes called a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant.

After completing its cycle in the first engine, the working fluid (the exhaust) is still hot enough that a second subsequent heat engine can extract energy from the heat in the exhaust.

Usually the heat passes through a

heat exchanger so that the two engines can use different working fluids.

By generating power from multiple streams of work, the overall efficiency of the system can be increased by 50–60%. That is, from an overall efficiency of say 34% (for a simple cycle), to as much as 64% (for a combined cycle). This is more than 84% of the theoretical efficiency of a Carnot cycle.

This can be done because heat engines can only use part of the energy from their fuel (usually less than 50%). In an ordinary (noncombined cycle) heat engine the remaining heat (i.e., hot exhaust gas) from combustion is wasted.

The new combined cycle plant for Turbigo, with a projected 57% yield, is scheduled to be operational by early 2022, while the test exercises and inspection should be completed by June 2022.

Based on an EPC contract, Ansaldo Energia will manage the executive design phase, the supply of the gas turbine, generators and setup transformers, heat recovery vapour generator, the implementation of the civil works, the assembly and supply of ancillary electrical and mechanical installations.

Iren will integrate the project with the existing plant to obtain maximum overall production flexibility, the upgrading of certain components on the current production plant, operational since 2008, so as to further improve performance and the renewal of the concessions with the national electricity network.

TWO RENEWABLE PROJECTS ROLLED OUT ACROSS AFRICA Two major milestones have been announced by Lekela. The first is the official opening of Lekela’s flagship Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye (PETN) project in Senegal, the first-ever utility-scale wind power in West Africa; the second is that work has just begun on the 250MW West Bakr Wind project.

ekela, the renewable power generation company which delivers utility-scale projects across Africa, last month celebrated two major milestones: the inauguration of its flagship Parc Eolien Taiba N’Diaye (PETN) project in Senegal, which provides the first ever utility-scale wind power in West Africa; and groundbreaking on the 250MW West Bakr Wind project in Egypt.

The inauguration of PETN marks the official opening of a wind farm which will provide power for over 2 million people. As West Africa’s first utility scale wind farm, PETN consists of 46 Vestas wind turbines producing 158.7MW. The first phase is now producing electricity, with 16 wind turbines generating up to 50MW. Once fully complete later in 2020, PETN will provide a 15% uplift to Senegal’s generation capacity. The project will generate electricity for Senegal for two decades.

PETN was officially inaugurated by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall. Also attending the ceremony were Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mouhamadou Makhtar Cissé; Her Excellency Tulinabo S. Mushingi and Her Excellency Victoria Billing, ambassadors for the USA and UK respectively; Papa Mademba Biteye, CEO of Senelec, and a delegation from the World Bank.

In Egypt, groundbreaking on the 250MW West Bakr Wind project marks the start of construction for the project.

To celebrate, an event was held at Cairo’s new Administrative Capital and attended by Lekela stakeholders and partners, including the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Planning. Senior government executives from the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) also attended.

Located 30 kilometers north-west of Ras Ghareb, West Bakr Wind is part of the Government’s Build, Own, Operate (BOO) scheme. It will provide an additional 250 MW of clean energy to the grid, increasing Egypt’s wind energy capacity as the country strives to meet its target

of generating 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2022.

The project will prevent more than 550,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Both West Bakr Wind and PETN are deploying 20-year community investment plans in their local areas.

These are designed to address pressing socio-economic development challenges and ensure sustained improvements for communities, even after the end of wind farm operations in the future.

At West Bakr Wind, for example, migrating birds will be protected through the development of a “shut down on demand” programme.

At PETN, two new marketplaces have been constructed and a new IT centre has been built for local schoolchildren. The plan of socio-economic investments at PETN is estimated to contribute up to US$20 million over the lifetime of the wind farm.

DIG 140 GENERATORS SUPPLIED TO THE GORGON & JANSZ-LO GAS FIELDS

O

ff the coast of Western Australia one of the world’s largest natural gas projects is under construction.

The Chevron-operated Gorgon Project is developing the Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields. It includes the construction of a three-train, 15.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Barrow Island and a domestic gas plant with the capacity to provide 300 terajoules per day of gas.

Barrow Island is remote, and building the new facility needs power.

Contractor MPower is building the power plant to supply this for a scheduled seven year construction period, and has already begun installing twelve generating sets to fill the need. There is no grid supply to Barrow Island so the generating sets need to operate in island mode. And as well as working efficiently in the hot, dry climate, they must also be environmentally-friendly as Barrow Island is a Class A Nature Reserve.

MPower selected Cummins Generator Technologies as its generator supplier for its proven and reliable products, reinforced by its experiences of working together since as far back as 1984.

For the Gorgon Project, MPower had

specific requirements for staged delivery, DNV Certification and Clean Air Clean Air (CACA) coolers.

To provide the 24 MW of continuous power it needed, MPower specified 12 x 2,750 kVA generating sets - capable of delivering a total of 33 MW - equipped with MTU 20V400G63L engines and 11 kV AvK® DIG 140k-4L generators.

The generators supported by CACA coolers and mounted with electric motor driven fans, are rated up to 45°C ambient and can thus cope with the high ambient temperatures typical for Barrow Island.

The generator blueprint features sleeve bearings with oil supply from prime movers with an oil cooling system, AVR with ‘Black Start’ capability, vibration probe fixtures for customer vibration monitoring system, and separate ‘Live’ and ‘Neutral’ side terminal box.

MPower reports that Cummins Generator Technologies has provided reliable, professional technical advice getting generating sets ready for shipment to Barrow Island from MPower’s Ingleburn facility.

Modelling the DIG 140 generator during the design process meant that the flow of information was maintained in a timely manner which allowed MPower to progress with the contract without delays.

Thanks to Cummins Generator Technologies, MPower has been able to supply a power station which can power the entire gas processing plant on Barrow Island during the project’s construction and commissioning phase. Twelve containerised generating sets have been shipped to Barrow Island so far.

The Gorgon Project is operated by an Australian subsidiary of Chevron and is a joint venture of the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (47.3%), ExxonMobil (25%), Shell (25%), Osaka Gas (1.25%), Tokyo Gas (1%) and Chubu Electric Power (0.417% ).

The second part of the Gorgon (Stage Two - GS2) project involves an expansion of the liquified natural gas project, located approximately 130km off the north-west coast of Western Australia, at a water depth of around 200m to 1,300m.

GS2 is part of Chevron’s strategy to invest between $18bn and $20bn a year through 2020. The project will include the development of supplementary wells and subsea infrastructure for supporting the operations of the existing Gorgon and Jansz-Io fields.

BIOMASS, POWER & SUGAR COMBINE IN CUBA - GENERATING 60 MEGAWATTS PER DAY

T

he first bioelectric plant in Cuba to generate electricity from the biomass of the marabú bush, is carrying out tests after its synchronisation to Cuba’s national grid.

The new plant, located in areas of a sugar factory in the province of Ciego de Ávila, was built with an investment of US$180 million, with the assistance of technology from Shanghai Electric Group Co Ltd and the works by the joint venture BioPower S.A., Once fully operational the plant is expected to generate 60 megawatts of electricity per day, the equivalent of 50% of Ciego de Ávila’s energy consumption, said specialist Carmen Taboada, vice president of BioPower S.A., thanks to Cuban, British and Chinese participation.

The plant will provide all the electricity needed by the Ciro Redondo sugar factory and the rest will go to the national grid, saving the country about 100,000 barrels of oil per year, Taboada said.

She explained that - in addition to using the marabú - the facility will produce clean energy during the sugar harvest period with the use of ‘bagasse’, a byproduct from the grinding of sugarcane.

The idea is to eliminate the bagasse dust, an organic wastewhich is generated in the sugar mill environment, and will also substantially reduce the emission of carbon-dioxide to the atmosphere.

Cuba’s strategy is to change its energy mix by 2030. It seeks to expand the use of renewable sources until it meets 24% of electricity generation needs. The idea is to establish bioelectric plants in Cuba to produce clean energy through biomass which is less expensive and more efficient than oil-burning plants.

Biopower was originally formed to finance, build own and operate five power plants burning bagasse during the sugar crushing season, and to use marabu (an endemic woody weed covering 2 million hectares of farmland) during the off season.

The underlying economics are compelling for Cuba. The vast majority of the electricity produced and consumed in Cuba is generated from old oil-fired power plants, in many cases simply burning crude oil.

Replacing this with biomass generation, even at a tariff sufficiently attractive to bring in external capital, means clean power generation at half of the current cost of dirty oil-fired electricity.

In fifteen years, moreover, once the capital of these new plants is paid for, the cost of electricity from these biomass plants will halve.

For this project Bainton Capital was appointed in a dual role, together with its engineering partner, ARC Developments international.

ARC was appointed as Owner’s

Engineer in November 2012. ARC carried out an engineering assessment of the project and developed a performance specification, including full commercial terms, which was issued to tenderers identified by ARC and the client.

ARC developed a team of Cuban engineers to carry out tender assessment, and Alstom was selected as the Preferred Tenderer following a technical, commercial and financial analysis. In parallel, ARC carried out further work on the integration of the power plant with the sugar mill, issued an updated specification and worked with Alstom to finalise the plant design.

PHASE 9, A RANGE OF 9-PHASE DC ALTERNATORS Linz Electric has developed a comprehensive range of 9-phase DC alternators for use in hybrid systems covering various applications, and for charging all types of batteries available on the market. This is available in different DC voltages and offers high control flexibility.

ecent years have brought important changes to the manufacturing of power generation equipment and lighting towers. It is a new era which focuses on increasing the use of ecological and sustainable solutions, reports Linz Electric.

Everyone has seen this sector shifting towards more efficient systems – in turn, this has led to a rapid increase of LED applications, to the rise of Lithium-Ion batteries based solutions and then on to the implementation of hybrid systems in many different applications.

To lead these major changes, Linz Electric has developed Phase 9, a comprehensive line of 9-phase DC alternators for use in hybrid systems covering various applications, and for charging all types of batteries available on the market.

Phase 9 is available in different DC voltages and thanks to a special Electronic regulator it offers high control flexibility over the output voltage and/or it can be connected to an external controller to manage different parameters of current, voltage and time.

The PHASE 9 series is made up of low voltage direct current generators consisting of synchronous brushless alternators with 9-phase windings able to guarantee residual AC current (Ripple) of less than 1% without batteries.

The AC output is converted to DC by means of rectifiers mounted into the control boxes located on top of the machines and provided with built-in fans.

The standard range is 24 or 48 Vdc; if requested, then versions can be provided with different voltages or higher current ratings.

In certain cases, for reason of size, these must be equipped with rectifiers located externally to the control box.

Voltage regulators designed especially for the PHASE 9 series alternators allow a wide range of control over the voltage output.

The Linz Electric DC alternators can be equipped with two types of regulators depending on the type of system required.

PHASE 9 alternators can be used with an external BMS (Battery Management System) for use in battery charging applications, or with a constant voltage control system.

The casing and end shields are made of vibration-resistant aluminium alloy.

The shaft is high-strength steel.

A robust rotor is able to withstand drive motor overspeed, and is provided with a damping cage.

The updated range of non-certified engines now covers all recognized power nodes from 30 to 500 kVA, with displacements of 2.9L through 13.6L. New features include dual frequency (50 Hz and 60 Hz), longer maintenance intervals and single-side service access.

In addition to the latest version of the D8 engine, the Al Masaood Power Division is highlighting the features of Volvo Penta’s flagship 16-litre diesel engine, the D16.

Through an alternator, the D16 engine can produce up to 800 kVA with excellent power density, high fuel efficiency and low exhaust emission levels. This engine meets the latest emission legislation requirements across the world.

The DST4603 features a 10” TFT colour display with a capacitive touchscreen, and true hot redundancy (PLC included) - it also has a true independent WATCH DOG circuit, a Double Ethernet interface and a double space for PLC program.

Alongside the DST 4603, SICES also unveiled the RN 200 hybrid controller for combined renewable parallel applications. This controller offers additional analogue inputs, a Canbus interface, a real-time clock and also allows maximum renewable energy penetration in the system, allowing measurement of the renewable resources. * DOOSAN INFRACORE exhibited its new DP222 C-Series compared to other engines this is said to display a higher output, excellent fuel effiicency, higher safety and easier maintenance. The engine offers high durability, with a high strength design in the cylinder block, cylinder head, crankshaft and connecting rod. It also incorporates a Bosch Common Rail System, and a Bosch ECU.

STRATEGIC INTERVENTIONS FOR INDUSTRY WITH COVID-19 The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), which represents the companies large and small who design, deliver and operate our national infrastructure, has written to the Government outlining a series of strategic interventions to help the industry see through the economic impact of COVID-19.

In a letter to the Chancellor, ACE highlighted a series of proactive and positive short & medium-term measures which could be taken to help the industry. The letter argued that rather than “simply ask for a cash flow bail-out” these interventions would “help to de-risk the future pipeline and ensure the industry is “fit-for-the-future”.

ACE Suggestions * A grant of up to £50,000 to SMEs in our sector to enable them to meet the digital requirements of working from home to be spent on hardware and specialist software.

•Acceleration of the preconstruction phase of Government programmes, including schools, hospitals and roads, to mitigate the downturn in private sector work, and help projects become shovel-ready sooner. * Turning the high-level commitment of an “infrastructure revolution” into a reality with a clear published pipeline of projects in the Autumn to stimulate the wider economy and generate business confidence. * Providing tax incentives for the housebuilding sector and further city deals to devolved Mayors to encourage private sector development. * Investment in Future of Consultancy demonstrator projects, £1 million seed-funding towards the business case and wider funding for R&D and innovation. All of which will ensure the entire sector is more robust going forwards.

In line with our expanded field of interest the new return format gives the opportunity for all sectors of the power generation industry to take part in the next report which will provide analysis, guidance and benchmark performance indices to users of engines and power generation facilities worldwide.

Whilst Contributors are encouraged to provide returns in each of the categories, all returns will be welcomed including those in a single category. We can accept returns to be published anonymously.

The Annual Operational Report, has been in existence since 1923 and formerly known as the Working Cost Report, is a unique compilation of data covering 95 years being of value to organisations worldwide, including plant owners, operators, financial bodies, manufacturers and consulting engineers. The Operational Report, being one of a number of technical papers presented and published by IPowerE each year, has included returns from more than 30 countries and at its peak 166 power stations, 600 prime movers, with an installed capacity of around 2,500Mwe. Power Electrics (Bristol) Ltd is expanding its business and brand with the acquisition of Power Electrics Ltd (trading as PE Generators). Power Electrics (Bristol) Ltd previously held a 15% shareholding in PE Generators and completed the acquisition almost six months ago, in November 2019.

As a leading UK generator hire specialist, the acquisition sees the group grow from four depot locations to six, spreading from Southampton in the South to Glasgow in the North.

The investment will increase the company’s capacity to deliver temporary power solutions improving its ability to reach a larger number of customers within the United Kingdom.

The purchase is the first of its kind for Power Electrics and will see an increase of over 30% of the total number of generators available to hire.

Along with the increase in coverage and equipment, the new Power Electrics group will increase specialist and skilled staff, with now over 300 employees across the business.

Power Electrics Director John Pullin commented, “This is a major opportunity for us. The increased capacity and resource extends our coverage and reach, enabling us to provide the highest level of customer service on a national basis.”

Following £10 million of investment, AMPS members, the Wernick Group, has expanded into the generator and temporary power solutions rental market with the launch of a new division – Wernick Power Solutions Ltd. The investment includes over 1,600 generators ranging from 6 to 500KVA including two 25 units in a £3m deal with JCB. Then, at the end of January 2020, the acquisition of specialist generator rental company Power-Rite took the generator fleet size in Wernick Power Solutions Ltd to approaching 2,000.

The new company will focus strongly on the synergy that exists with Wernick Hire’s existing construction related customer base meaning that both high quality portable accommodation and power solutions can be provided with the same reputation for industry leading customer service.

Headed up by General Manager David Mahon, the acquisition of Power-Rite now brings the total work force within Wernick Power Solutions Ltd to 30 strong, with plans to increase the team to in excess of 70, operating out of six regional locations by the end of 2021.

David. who has a strong background in temporary power solutions and specialist hire equipment, commented: “We have ambitions to turn Wernick Power Solutions into a UK market leader in its sector. With a modern hire fleet deploying the latest product telemetry, and backed by a highly experienced team, I am optimistic that Wernick Power Solutions will go from strength to strength.”
