It’s official - the share of all non-renewable fuels in EU primary energy consumption has decreased within the last three years while the share of renewable fuels has significantly increased over the same period.

Still, the EU’s primary energy consumption rose above the indicative trajectory set by the EEA to monitor progress towards 2020 energy efficiency targets, a trend which is expected to continue to 2022.

In accordance with the Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU), the EU Member States set up national indicative targets that, collectively, should have help the EU to reach its 20 % energy efficiency target by 2020.

For primary energy consumption, THE USE OF RENEWABLE the targets range from a 20.5 % reduction (UK) to a 28.6 % increase FUELS IS DEFINITELY ON compared with 2005 levels.

The exploitation of renewable energy sources does not give rise to greenhouse gas emissions (except in land use change issues related to biomass and emissions related to the use of non-renewable energy during the construction of renewable energy installations).

Renewable energy sources usually lead to significantly lower levels of air pollutants (except when related to biomass applications). Renewable energy can, however, affect landscapes and ecosystems (e.g. wind turbines severely affect the landscape and much land is needed for the production of biomass, which may have an impact on biodiversity).

Two particular items of legislation are intended to back this up. The Energy Efficiency Directive (Directive (EU) 2018/2002) puts forward a binding EU-wide 32.5 % energy savings target for 2030, following on from the existing 20% target. COM(2015) 80 final — the Energy Union Package - establishes a framework strategy for a resilient energy union with a progressive, forwardlooking climate policy.

IN BRIEF FOUR MAN DUAL-FUEL ENGINES EACH HAVE 14 MW OUTPUT MAN Energy Solutions has handed over a 56 MW power plant blockunit to its customer, Bermuda Electric Light Co. (BELCO).

The newly-constructed unit is an extension of the existing complex in Pembroke, home to Bermuda’s main power station and close to the capital, Hamilton. In a consortium with Danish power-plant specialist, Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC), MAN Energy Solutions was responsible for the delivery and commissioning of the unit’s four MAN 14V51/60 dual-fuel engines, while BWSC handled the plant’s construction. The four dual-fuel engines – each with an output of 14 MW – will allow to retire several old units in the power plant.

SMARTER LOCAL ENERGY NETWORKS WITH AI DINO A pilot project that aims to show how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to prevent local power networks being overloaded during the projected rapid rise in demand for electricity has been launched with co-funding from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency.

Project DINO (Domestic Infrastructure and Network Optimisation) - a partnership between Evergreen Smart Power, Energy Assets Networks and Myenergi - will demonstrate in a newbuild residential setting how AI can safeguard network integrity through two-way communication with household appliances. It is the first project of its type in the UK. Currently, housing developments are designed to cope with an average peak load of 2kW per household. However, as EV charging and heat pumps become more common place, this could routinely exceed 10kW – and without intervention, this could lead to power outages.

“There is growing realisation that local power networks may not be able to cope with the huge increase in demand for electricity as we transition to electric vehicles, battery storage/charging and air source heat pumps alongside traditional household appliances,” says Jayson Whitaker, Managing Director of Energy Assets Networks, which operates local networks around the country.

“The DINO project aims to demonstrate how a network-to-device AI interface can manage loads dynamically by enabling appliances to automatically dial down consumption at peak times to relieve network stress and safeguard power to homes. Without such a solution, the country would need to invest in a hugely costly network reinforcement programme to increase capacity.”

Networks are predicted to come under pressure as electrification increases in every area of life as the country decarbonises on the road to net zero – from the adoption of electric vehicles, with the phase-out of petrol and diesel cars in 2035, to the transition from gas to electric heating.

NIDEC ASI CONTRIBUTES TO THE ‘GREEN’ RELAUNCHING OF ITALIAN TOURISM Nidec ASI - head of the Nidec Industrial Solutions platform belonging to the Nidec Group - has played a key role in the sustainable renovation of Cortina d’Ampezzo’s landmark Faloria cableway which connects the city centre with Mount Faloria, at an altitude of 2,120 m, hub of the ski slopes in the winter months, offering a magnificent view over the Dolomites.

Tourists enjoying the natural beauty of the Alps this summer will have the opportunity to travel sustainably, in keeping with the restraints imposed by the Government, minimising the impact on the environment, thanks to Nidec ASI’s innovative green solutions.

Nidec ASI and its experts at the production plants in Montebello - a world centre of excellence in the development of cutting-edge systems for the development of cableway transport - and Monfalcone, will design, construct and supply SMART architecture for the operator.

This will incorporate the automation and safety features of the three stations and four cable cars, enabling integrated diagnostics of the entire system both from the local supervision station and remotely.

The cableway will also be equipped with an innovative backbone radio circuit (wi-fi), with hand-over management of moving vehicles similar to that of railway technologies, in order to enable communication between the stations (upline/midway/downline), the automated vehicles and the safety features.

TRACTEBEL SUPPORTS TENNET IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF 145 KM HV LINE Germany’s biggest transmission grid operator, TenneT, has awarded Tractebel the contract for installing a 380 kV overhead line, covering a distance of 145 km between Dollern and Landesbergen.

The “A250 Stade-Landesbergen” project will make a key contribution towards the success of the energy transition in Germany. Tractebel’s technical concept and experience in the management of major projects were competitive enough to win the contract.

The team, with Tractebel Engineering GmbH as the lead company, will be supporting this project over the next six years as an EPCM project together with external partners such as the ERM Group or EQOS Energie Deutschland GmbH. Around 30 Tractebel experts from different Tractebel corporate units such as Lahmeyer Deutschland, Tractebel DOC and Tractebel Romania will be providing their combined know-how. Dr. Thomas Brandstätt, Chairman of the Management Board at Tractebel Engineering GmbH, is convinced: “The energy transition in Germany will only be successful if the increase in offshore wind energy and solar energy is integrated with the expansion of the grid. The TenneT A250 grid expansion project is a critical factor in Germany’s economy.

IN BRIEF GE & TIRRENO POWER OFFER ADDITIONAL SAFETY PROTOCOLS GE said it has safely completed the installation of a new rotor and a compressor upgrade on a GE 9F.03 gas turbine at Tirreno Power’s 1200 MW Torrevaldaliga Sud Power Plant near Rome.

The modernization project started in late February with the goal to enhance the reliability and availability of the equipment, which provides power to the Italian grid. In the following weeks, as the pandemic spread and Covid-19 protective measures were put in place, GE, in alignment with Tirreno Power, quickly implemented additional safety protocols and procedures to ensure the timely and safe completion of the outage.

GO DOWN THE HYDROGEN ROUTE EUROPEAN COMMISSION IS URGED

HAWAIIAN ELECTRIC SELECTS PLUS POWER’S 185MW KES PROJECT

The CEOs of ten leading energy companies have written an open letter to the European Commission (EC), urging the group to prioritise hydrogen generation as part of Europe’s clean energy future.

The letter, signed by various companies including Akuo Energy, Ørsted and Vestas, calls on the EC to embrace hydrogen in its upcoming “green recovery plan”.

New plans set out the long-term power plans for Europe to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, and transition to a cleaner energy mix.

Hydrogen, as a power source, is typically thought of as a byproduct of installing carbon capture hardware at natural gas plants, but the letter’s signatories are eager to highlight the potential of electrolysis of water, an alternative process that can produce hydrogen without environmental damage.

The open letter explains: “Hydrogen produced via electrolysis, powered by 100% renewable electricity, has zero greenhouse gas emissions. When made in Europe it reduces the EU’s energy dependence from third countries and when produced by grid connected renewables it offers a real form of sector coupling between the power sector and the other economic sectors.”

Opinion is divided as to the viability of clean hydrogen as a power source on both a large scale and over a long period. Groups such as the UK’s Committee on Climate Change have noted that the infrastructure required to develop large-scale electrolysis facilities could ultimately cost more, in time, money, and the consumption of other fuel sources, than the clean hydrogen production would offset. Hydrogen could be a relatively stable investment, meaning investors are more likely to develop large-scale hydrogen facilities.

Independent developer of utility-scale battery storage projects Plus Power has announced that its 185MW/565MWh Kapolei Energy Storage project (KES) has been selected by Hawaiian Electric.

The utility selected 16 renewable energy as well as battery storage projects located across three islands in the second phase of the request for proposal (RFP) process.

Located in Kapolei on the island of Oahu, Plus Power’s KES project is said to be the largest battery storage project selected by Hawaiian Electric in the RFP process.

Plus Power lead developer Bob Rudd said: “Plus Power is honoured and excited to work with Hawaiian Electric to implement this ground-breaking project.

“At 185MW/565MWh, the KES project will provide the scale necessary to transition away from coal and to accelerate Hawaii’s path toward 100% renewable energy. We look forward to working closely with all stake-

holders to realise this project and deliver its economic and environmental benefits to the people of Oahu.”

The battery storage facility is spread across nearly eight acres of land in the Kapolei Harborside industrial project.

It will be equipped with a lithium-ion battery and will interconnect at a critical Hawaiian Electric substation.

IN BRIEF POWERCELL SIGNS MOU WITH ABB POWER GRIDS PowerCell Sweden AB has signed a memorandum of understanding with ABB Power Grids regarding a collaboration around fuel cell based zero emissions stationary power solutions.

The aim of the cooperation is to leverage the companies’ existing technologies to jointly develop a complete solution for the market. A final agreement is expected to be reached within approximately 12 months Following the joint development and licensing agreement with Robert Bosch GmbH regarding the PowerCell S3 fuel cell stack for the automotive segment last year, PowerCell Sweden AB has made a review of its strategic prioritizations and decided to increase its focus on the stationary segment.

THREE NEW HYDROPOWER PLANTS FOR UZBEKISTAN JSC Uzbekhydroenergo, Uzbekistan’s state hydropower producer and developer, has announced a tender for the design & construction of the Rabat, Chappasuy and Tamshush Hydropower Plants on the Aksu River in the Kashkadarya Region of Uzbekistan.

The construction of the three hydropower plants is part of Uzbekistan’s Sustainable Hydropower Project, which is part-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The wider context to the tender is Uzbekistan’s ambitious national energy strategy which aims to meet increasing demands for energy and to generate a quarter of all electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The strategy will see the deployment up to 30 GW of additional power capacity by 2030, including 3.8 GW of hydro energy and 5 GW of solar energy.

EU APPROVAL: SEAL OF EXCELLENCE FOR AW-ENERGY OY AND ITS WAVEROLLER® WAVE ENERGY PROJECT Finnish company, AW-Energy Oy (AWE), the global leading wave energy technology company and developer of WaveRoller®, has received the EU Seal of Excellence award from Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation funding programme. It follows the company’s project submission to the EU’s EIC Accelerator programme.

An international judging panel including business angels, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and experts from innovation hubs, evaluated AWE’s wave energy project. It was judged to provide strong added-value, being commercially viable and better than existing solutions on the market.

The wave energy sector represents significant opportunities for investment as global energy needs are predicted to rise, combined with the political and social pressure to supply future energy using sustainable, low carbon sources.

Wave energy is itself a highly predictable form of energy, 24/7, 365 days a year, and a CO2-free power source for hundreds of millions of people. AWE’s technology helps to extract energy from waves that are accessible to 80% of the world’s largest cities, which are in coastal areas. Theoretical estimates have recently been published which show global output of wave power to be 29,500 TWh/yr, equivalent to 125% of the current global demand for electricity. With projects in US, Europe and Asia, AWE expect to see rapid sales for its wave energy technology as governments, operators and energy policy strive for cleaner and more sustainable power generation solutions ahead of next year’s global UN climate talks.

POWERGEN STATISTICS: LATEST RESEARCH ON THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET FOR DIESEL GENERATOR SETS

IN BRIEF WORLD’S FIRST FLOATING NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Akademic Lomonosov, the world’s first floating nuclear power plant (NPP), has been fully commissioned in Pevek, Chukotka region in the Russian Far East.

The NPP was built by Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom via its electric power division Rosenergoatom. Facility director Andrei Petrov said: “Our floating nuclear power plant construction project successfully completed. We finished our main task for this year – fully commissioned the FNPP in Pevek, Chukotka region.

“Officially it becomes the 11th nuclear power plant in Russia and the northernmost one in the world.”

Russia’s environmental watchdog Rostechnadzor has already inspected the project.

The market for diesel generator sets contracted by 14% in the first quarter of 2020, a drop which was strongly impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, particularly in Asian countries. The market is expected to decrease by 17% in 2020 and all regions will be affected with different timing and impact depending on the virus spread, the measures taken, and the sectors of activity.

Several markets will be particularly affected such as Oil&Gas, mining, tourism as well as rental generators.The first countries affected are those whose economies and incomes depend largely on oil. The price of a barrel having fallen sharply, African countries (Algeria, Nigeria, Lybia) and the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar) have seen their investments called into question. Saudi Arabia which had huge planned construction projects has thus frozen certain major programs.

Secondly, the international tourism sector is likely to be very affected for a long time, and some countries very dependent on these revenues (Asia, Africa, Southern Europe, Caribbean) will see part of their economy fall. Some investments have already been put on hold (eg Egypt).

Finally, the rental generator segment will also suffer from a drop in demand due to the shutdown of the event industry and the temporary halt in construction. In addition, in Europe, 2020 corresponds to a year of transition to Stage V groups which are for the most part much more expensive than Stage IIIA groups. Rental companies whose revenues have dropped and their underutilized fleets, will invest less in new generators.

HELÉNE MELLQUIST APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF VOLVO PENTA

SIEMENS SUPPLYING 9 TURBINES, 17 COMPRESSORS TO REFINERY

Heléne Mellquist appointed President of Volvo Penta Heléne Mellquist has been appointed President of Volvo Penta and member of the Volvo Group Management Team.

Heléne Mellquist is currently President of the European Division of Volvo Trucks. She began her career at the Volvo Group in 1988 and has held many senior positions at the company, as well as being the CEO at TransAtlantic AB between 2012-2015.

Heléne will replace Björn Ingemanson, who after a long and successful career at the Volvo Group, will retire in September 2020. Heléne, who was born in 1964, will join Volvo Penta on July 1st, and work alongside Björn before she takes up her new position on September 1st.

“I feel extremely inspired to continue to develop this part of the Volvo Group together with the team at Volvo Penta,” says Heléne. “With the strong product portfolio Volvo Penta has in both

The facility is owned and operated by PT Pertamina (Persero), whose facility master plan involves the construction of a residual fluid catalytic cracker (RFCC) unit with a design capacity of 90,000 barrels per stream per day (bpsd); a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sulphur removal unit; a propylene recovery unit; and an 80,000 bpsd middle distillate hydrotreater.

Siemens Gas and Power’s scope of supply includes 17 reciprocating compressors, along with a single-stage, hot gas expander. Specific compressor models to be provided include eight HHE-VL compressors, two HHE-FB compressors, four HHE-VG compressors, and three HSE compressors. Additionally, Siemens Gas and Power will supply four SGT-800 industrial gas turbines and five SST-600 steam turbines for the Balikpapan power plant.

The hot gas expander will recover waste heat (i.e., flue gas) from the RFCC reactor to produce approximately 20 MW of free power, which will be used to drive the plant’s central air blower, along with a single steam turbine. Siemens said this unique arrangement will reduce overall steam consumption and result in significant operational cost savings for Pertamina.

IN BRIEF ACCIONA WINS SUPPLY CONTRACT FROM MADRID CALLE 30 Renewable energy company ACCIONA has won a public contract from Madrid Calle 30 for the supply of 36GWh of clean energy.

As per the terms of the agreement, ACCIONA will supply renewablecertified electricity to Madrid Calle 30 facilities. The group manages Madrid’s main ring road, as well as its surrounding infrastructure and areas.

ACCIONA will supply clean energy to Madrid Calle 30’s energy management system under a one-year contract.

This will power the company’s lighting, ventilation, traffic control, security and communications systems.

This will help Madrid Calle 30 to meet its key carbon footprint reduction targets.

DEPSYS LAUNCHES QUARTERLY GRID CHECK REPORTS A first set of its free quarterly grid Health Check reports has been delivered by Depsys to its power distribution system operator (DSO) customers.

A technology company whose ethos is to ‘empower grid managers to evolve their operations through digital technology’, Depsys uses real network data collected by its GridEye grid optimisation solution to compile reports. Depsys has analysed customers’ networks to highlight trends, anomalies and outliers, delivering individual reports that will help them to better understand and manage distribution networks.

Anja Langer Jacquin, Chief Commercial Officer, comments: “Our goal is to simplify the energy transition for grid managers, to help them improve and maintain operational excellence in the face of the challenges it will bring. Depsys has initiated the first set of Health Checks on behalf of seven DSO customers in Switzerland, Germany and Ireland. The ambition is to extend the free service across Depsys’ entire customer base – which currently stands at approximately 40 DSOs around the world. Delivered quarterly, the reports will be edited based on customer feedback to maximise their value. Early responses have praised the quality of the graphics in helping grid managers interpret data, and some recipients have already made new inspection plans in response to the data. Over time, the Health Checks will provide a longterm view on grid performance and areas for attention.

Emilie Zermatten, Technical Account Manager and one of the analysts behind the Health Check initiative, says: “There are all sorts of insights these Health Checks can deliver: Where are cables running at near 100% load a lot of the time? Where are voltages close to acceptable limits? Where are power quality events happening most?

Answers to these types of questions can help grid managers plan maintenance work and upgrades or adjust their grid management strategies.”

$1.62 BILLION CONTRACT FOR INDONESIAN PLANT WON BY CHINA State-owned construction company China Gezhouba Group (CGG) has signed a $1.62 billion contract deal to build a 1.2GW hydroelectric power plant in Indonesia.

CGG will run the design, construction material, procurement and commissioning for the Borneo plant. Work will begin with phase one of the Data Dian plant, owned by Indonesia Dafeng Heshun Energy Industri. When the plant is completed, CGG willbegin assessment trials before handing it over within the terms of the five-year agreement, The company is a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group, which is in turn owned by the Chinese state. It said it has reassured workers of precautions made to limit the spread of Covid-19.

CGG Chairman Chen Xiaohua said he expects some of the power to be used for local industries such as metal extraction and smelting.

Chinese state media announced the deal as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. This policy was established by the country to invest in the development of nearby foreign countries. Some commentators, including the prime minister of Malaysia, have warned that this is a “new version of colonialism” based on economics.

NEW GAS-FIRED POWER PLANT TO BE BUILT IN AFGHANISTAN The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed an agreement to provide a loan to the Afghan Power Plant Company (APPC) for the Mazar gas-fired power plant in Afghanistan.

ADB’s financing package of $10m aims to support Afghanistan’s efforts to achieve energy security through its own power sources.

The ADB loan will finance the construction and operations of a 58.5MW gas-fired power plant near Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.

The plant will be cost $89m and will use local gas resources for generating

electricity. Once operational, it is expected to generate 404GWh of power annually.

APPC is a special purpose vehicle, jointly owned by Ghazanfar Group and Egyptian construction company Hassan Allam Holdings.

APPC chairman Ismail Ghazanfar comments: “Ghazanfar Group is deeply honoured to have the support of international development banks including ADB for this first-of-its-kind project in Afghanistan.

“This is the first step in Ghazanfar Group’s vision of helping to develop 5,000MW of energy generation facilities in Afghanistan.”

POWER AND UTILITIES INDUSTRY SEEKS GROWTH BY LEADING ENERGY TRANSITION

NEW DELOITTE REPORT A new report by Deloitte indicates that in 2019 the multiyear pattern of record-breaking utility capital expenditures amid stagnant load growth continued in the industry.

The market shows few signs of changing, says Deloitte, as the need to upgrade aging infrastructure, digitise, and secure the grid against natural and man-made disasters such as cyberattacks continues. But while this generally creates upward pressure on prices, once again in 2019 retail electricity customers saw only modest increases. This is due in part to low natural gas prices and declining costs of wind and solar power continuing to dampen wholesale electricity prices.

Natural gas continued to dominate the US power generation mix, at more than 44 percent of generation capacity.1 Wind and solar capacity also continued its rise, to nearly 12 percent of capacity, driven largely by growing corporate commitment to renewables, declining prices, supportive policies such as renewable portfolio standards (RPS), and improved performance.

investment in transmission and distribution systems. At the same time, cyberattacks on the electric grid have increased and become more targeted in recent years, requiring power companies to continue fortifying their defenses.

Bright spots were increasing flexibility and resilience achieved through grid modernization and opportunities to boost long-term revenue through electrification, especially in the transportation sector as electric vehicle (EV) adoption rises.

In Deloitte’s 2019 outlook, its analysts explored how the US power and utilities industry is continuing on its path to transformation and experimenting with new technologies and business models, while the traditional utility regulatory structure struggles to catch up.

As we move into a new decade, many power and utility companies are not only boosting their own decarbonisation commitments and efforts, but they’re also taking on the mantle of leadership in the economy-wide clean energy transition. In 2020, we expect to see these efforts intensify and bring new opportunities for customer engagement and growth.

In a recent Deloitte survey about the transition to 100 percent renewables, responding organisations across the private and public sectors identified “co-ordination with our electric utility” as the top external enabler for their progress in moving to cleaner energy sources. This underscores the electric power sector’s unique role as a leader in the clean energy transition. And many are ready to embrace that role.

GENSET SAVES THE DAY AFTER TORNADO HITS INDIANA

ay 27th, 2019: Memorial Day, Pendleton, Indiana, USA. Roofs were ripped off while trees and power lines lay strewn across the ground after a Memorial Day tornado outbreak ravaged Indiana.

One of the hardest hit cities was Pendleton, which took the brunt of what the National Weather Service said was at least an EF-2 tornado with winds up to 130 miles per hour.

According to the service, the tornado which hit the town was 100 yards wide and was on the ground for nearly six miles. The Indiana State Police reported at least 75 homes were damaged and about 4,200 households were left without electricity.

Streets were closed and residents were urged to shelter in place for several days while crews worked to restore power. Only one injury was reported, and several people say they only avoided serious problems because they were able to receive an alert on their cell phones to take shelter.

Although thousands of people were without grid power, they had access to cellular networks. That was thanks to a Generac backup generator. Without a generator, people would not have be able to

access emergency services and get the help they need. Emergency services rely on cell networks in addition to radio communication, so when disaster strikes, it’s especially important that they remain operational.

One of the USA’s largest cell provider has a cellular tower which provided Pendleton residents with the chance to call for emergency services because their tower was backed up by a Generac 60 kW diesel generator.

“We have a great working relationship with telecom operations in our market and we have been a vendor of choice for many years,” said Steve Maser, vice president power systems manager, EVAPAR. “We service all of our generators in Indiana and Kentucky annually and the tower in Pendleton has not had any generator issues in the past and the unit has successfully backed up the site when it was required.”

EVAPAR prides itself on always being there for the customer and making sure their unit runs when it needs to. During the aftermath of the tornados, the Pendleton area was without power for

several days and one telecom generator was running out of fuel.

“The units are set to 40% low fuel alarm and when that went off, we got a call from the generator owner,” said Maser. “We had them close the area and we dispatched a truck with 100 gallons of diesel fuel which helped refuel the generator during the outages.”

Maser confirmed that the process was flawless and the generator never had to drop load while refuelling. Thanks to collaborative efforts from the owner and EVAPAR, this innovative solution has been keeping cell service operational for Pendleton, Indiana residents no matter what the weather might deliver. www.generac.com

ZERO-EMISSIONS H-POWER UNIT FOR A CONSTRUCTION SITE IN SPAIN

A

FC Energy, a leading provider of hydrogen power generation technologies, has today announced a collaboration with major Spanish construction company ACCIONA to install its zero-emissions H-Power generator on a construction site in Spain next year.

The deployment of the hydrogen powered system comes as part of a wider strategy by both companies to bring clean, renewable energy to the construction sector across Europe and highlights the pivotal role hydrogen will play in the post-COVID transition to a cleaner economy.

As governments continue to look for ways to meet net-zero commitments, decarbonisation of the construction sector has become an important objective in the fight for better air quality.

With renewed attention being given to air pollution in our cities post-lockdown, the need for zeroemission alternatives to off-grid diesel generators has never been greater. The only emission from AFC Energy’s hydrogen powered generator is water.

The two gensets deployed inside the container are cooled by two remote radiators which utilise 4 electric fans placed in a special compartment and a further fan located within the engine compartment, fan speed is controlled by an inverter.

The TWINGENS fuel system consists of a double wall metal fuel tank which serves both gensets.

Quick release fuel couplings allow for the simple connection of an external fuel supply and a double leak detection systems offers a high degree of protection.

There is a command and control panel - a single automatic synchronising control panel to run one or both gensets according to power demand.

The 30-foot High Cube is said to offer high structural resistance, ISO lifting hooks (CSC Safety Approval), double seal gaskets, a roof access ladder & roof security anchorage points and an internal canopy lighting system with manual switch for easy operation, even with low ambient light conditions.

The Twingen is equipped with a special lifting system. The special lifting system with hydraulic pistons guarantees ease and safety of transport with no need for a Hiab lorry or onsite crane to off load and position the unit, says Pramac.

Volvo manufactures the Model TWD1643GE water-cooled engine which also features 6 in-line cylinders (displacement 16120 cm³).

Aspiration is turbocharged; there is an electric fan an electronic Speed governor. Lube oil consumption @ PRP (max) is at 0.1%.

Coolant capacity is 60L and the electric circuit is 24V. The engine and block features an optimised cast iron cylinder block with optimum distribution of forces and wet, replaceable cylinder liners.

The design offers crankshaft induction hardened bearing surfaces and fillets with seven bearings for moderate load on main and high-end bearings.

Keystone top compression rings provide long service life, as do the replaceable valve guides and valve seats and tapered connecting rods for an increased piston lifetime.

There is an overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder, hot parts protection with metal grids and heavy-duty air filters.

The fuel system offers electronic unit injectors and a fuel prefilter with water separator and watering-fuel indicator / alarm, a fine fuel filter with manual feed pump and fuel pressure switch, plus a lubrication system.

The design provides a full flow oil cooler, a full flow disposable spin-on oil filter, for extra high filtration, and a gear type

lubricating oil pump, gear driven by the transmission.

The integrated cooling system provides efficient cooling with accurate coolant control through a water distribution duct in the cylinder block.

Also provided is a reliable sleeve thermostat with minimum pressure drop and a belt-driven coolant pump with high degree of efficiency.

A Class-H brushless 4-pole Mecc Alte Alternator (Model ECO40 2L) has an electronic Voltage regulation system (DSR) with 1% Voltage tolerance.

The ECO40 alternator supplied by Mecc Alte is part of a range which has many product features designed into its technology.

For example, effective self-regulation is achieved through a digital electronic regulator which is fed by an auxiliary winding.

Mecc Alte guarantees an almost constant supply from the generator – under any possible operating condition. A rotating inductor has been fitted with a damper cage.

The windings have a 2/3 pitch in order to reduce the harmonic content of voltage.

NEW TURBINE IN URUGUAY’S FIRST COMBINED GAS-STEAM CYCLE POWER PLANT

D

oosan Škoda Power confirms it has successfully installed and launched a DST-S20 steam turbine with an output of 200 MW, along with operational equipment, at the Punta del Tigre combined gas-steam cycle power plant in Uruguay.

The project, called Punta del Tigre B, has a total output of 530 MW and is designed to complement the existing Punta del Tigre A project. This was the biggest investment made in the last 40 years by Usinas y Transmisiones Eléctricas, the Uruguayan power company which owns the power plants.

Doosan Škoda Power worked with Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd, a Korean EPC company, on the project. It is the first combined gas-steam cycle plant in Uruguay, which will cover up to 25% of local power consumption, thus marking a significant step towards stabilization of the network, which still relied predominantly on local hydro power plants until recently, the company said.

In addition to the 200 MW steam turbine with double-casings, condensing with reheat and the radial steam outlet from rear low pressure part into the water condenser, the Pilsen-based manufacturer also supplied the operational equipment.

This has consisted of a generator, a control system and field instrumentation, an oil system, piping, a gland steam system and drain system. The project was initiated in September 2013 and was officially handed over to the end owner in November 2019.

“A team of our engineers assisted our EPC partner in implementing the project on site to ensure that it ran smoothly,” said Jindřich Závodný, project manager at Doosan Škoda Power.

“Through joint efforts, the whole project was successfully completed and handed over to the owner.

However, the project was affected by minor difficulties due to the specific local conditions, from complex co-ordination of suppliers to strikes of local trade unions.”

CRICKET VALLEY HRSG OPENS IN NEW YORK

ricket Valley Energy Center, Dover, New York, opened in April 2020 with three GE 7F.05 gas turbines, three steam turbines and three heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) operating in combined-cycle mode.

Cricket Valley Energy Center (CVEC) is a 1.1GW natural gas-fired power plant developed in Dover, New York, US. The facility is the most efficient combined cycle power plant in the state.

Cricket Valley Energy Center LLC, an affiliate of Advanced Power, developed the project at a cost of $1.58bn.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place in June 2017, while its commercial operation started in April 2020.

The project currently produces enough electricity to power more than one million homes in the Hudson Valley.

It has created more than 1,100 jobs during the peak construction phase and the plant will support 25 permanent positions for its operations.

Located at 2241 Route 22, the plant extends over 193 acres and has the advantage of existing energy infrastructure such as electric power lines and a natural gas pipeline.

The facility is Advanced Power’s second major electric generating facility in the US, the first being the Carroll County Energy Centre in Ohio.

The CVEC is powered by GE’s engineered equipment package comprising three 7F.05 gas turbines, three steam turbines and three heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) operating in combined-cycle mode.

Each combustion turbine produces approximately 209MW of electric power at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard conditions.

The HRSG comprises a natural gas-fired duct burner (supplemental firing system) to allow for additional electrical production during periods of high electricity demand.

A low NOx natural gas-fired auxiliary boiler is installed to keep the HRSGs warm during periods of a shutdown and provides sealing steam to the steam turbine during start-ups.

The power plant is also equipped with four 3MW diesel-fired black start generators to re-start the facility’s combustion turbines in the event of a total power loss. State-of-the-art control systems along with fire detection alarms and suppression mechanisms are also installed.

The project receives natural gas from the nearby Iroquois natural gas pipeline through a 500ft-long, 12in diameter natural gas pipeline.

An investors group which is comprised of Advanced Power, JERA, TIAA Investments, BlackRock Financial

Management, Development Bank of Japan and NongHyup Financial Group have provided $709m in equity for the project.

A consortium of companies and institutions, including GE Energy Financial Services, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank and Bank of America is also providing $875m debt facility for the project.

The power generated by the CVEC is sold to the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) energy market through an interconnection with Consolidated Edison Company of New York’s (ConEd) transmission network.

A switchyard and complete substation incorporating gasinsulated switchgear (GIS), has been installed onsite to connect to the existing ConEd 345kV Line 398 transmission line.

The Cricket Valley substation transmits power to the ConEd substation in Pleasant Valley through a new 700ft transmission line.

The new line is located next to the existing 345kV Line 398 inside the 14.6-mile (23.5km) ConEd right-ofway.

The cables of a 3.4-mile (5.47km) segment of Line 398 were also replaced as part of the project. www.ge.com

SERVICE TUTORIAL VIDEOS WIN INTERMEDIA-GLOBE SILVER AWARD 2020

O

nce again, one of MWM’s video productions has been found worthy of the intermedia-globe Silver Award of the WorldMediaFestival. In the award category “Training: Learning Programmes” the Mannheim-based gas engine manufacturer has prevailed over its competitors, winning the intermedia-globe Silver Award for the best training videos, reports UKPN. Every year, the international competition for communication media honors outstanding corporate film, TV, web, and print productions.

This year, the awards were bestowed in a virtual ceremony. MWM won the intermedia-globe Silver Award for the best training videos.

The award goes to the first two episodes of the MWM service tutorial video series “Do it the smart way”.

Under the supervision of Frank Fuhrmann (Manager PR & Online Marketing, Caterpillar Energy Solutions), the series was produced in collaboration with the event and film agency Motionplan.

The two episodes were recorded in German and subsequently translated and dubbed in five additional languages (Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish).

In the tutorial series, which is published on MWM’s YouTube channel “mwmgenset”, Alexander Klotz, Technical Trainer at the Training Center Service in Mannheim, gives the audience some basic maintenance tips and instructions.

Episode 1 of the tutorial series shows how to replace spark plugs of MWM power gensets. In episode 2, Alexander Klotz demonstrates the adjustment of the valve clearance on MWM power gensets on an MWM TCG 3016 gas engine.

MWM has co-operated with the event and film agency Motionplan since 2009. Together, the companies have rolled out numerous video projects, which have already won six prestigious international awards.

The video tutorial series was shot in “hands-on” style in the MWM Service Center in Mannheim.

“As the series was not filmed in a studio, but in a real service center, we had to use more sophisticated lighting and adapt the sound to the setting,” explains Marcus Seip, Managing Director of the event and film agency Motionplan.

During the production of the tutorial series, it was also challenging to depict technical details and provide a clear overview of the entire engine.

“We decided to additionally display text blocks in order to provide viewers with an even clearer picture of the

individual processes”, says Frank Fuhrmann, Manager PR & Online Marketing of Caterpillar Energy Solutions.

“We are pleased with the positive feedback that we have received via the comment function of our YouTube channel in many languages concerning the first two episodes of the series.”

Episode 3 of “Do it the smart way” has already been prepared, and episode 4 is already in the pipeline.

In total, the company plans on producing two or three tutorial videos a year, featuring new topics concerning maintenance work on MWM gas engines.

Apart from the award-winning tutorial series, MWM’s focus on service training is also evident from the extensive seminar offering for MWM customers.

In various training units, competent trainers convey application-oriented training modules with practical examples, enabling the customer to do basic maintenance work on combined heat and power (CHP) plants, gas engines, and power gensets.

The number of participants indicates

the popularity of the training offerings among MWM customers.

“The seminars are very popular, and we’re in the course of creating even more training capacity,” says Tobias Marnet, Head of the Training Center Service.

“After every training measure, we conduct quality surveys, and we always get positive feedback from highly satisfied participants.”

Last year, more than 900 customers participated in MWM service training seminars. Some new training programs are already in the pipeline.

“With the new online platform that we are currently developing, we will soon be able to offer our customers various training measures in the form of live online training,” says Marnet.

MUNICH AIRPORT: A SERVICE SUCCESS STORY Munich Airport has been a loyal customer of the MWM Service Center South (Munich/Germany).

Initially, the airport’s energy and emergency power supply was provided by seven TBDG 441 V16 diesel gas engines. In 2002, the line-up was expanded with two TCG 2032 V16 engines.

n terms of freight and passenger figures, Franz Josef Strauss Airport in Munich is Germany’s second-largest airport. Last year, the airport recorded 47.9 million passengers and 350 thousand t of freight - less than Frankfurt (70.5 million passengers, 2.1 million tonnes of freight), but more than Düsseldorf, which ranks third (25.5 million passengers, 81 thousand tonnes of freight).

Since the airport opened in 1992, it has been a loyal customer of the MWM Service Center South (Munich/ Germany).

Initially, the airport’s energy and emergency power supply was provided by seven TBDG 441 V16 diesel gas engines. In 2002, the line-up was expanded with two TCG 2032 V16 engines.

IIn 2015, the energy supply underwent further modernization: A new cogeneration power plant with four additional TCG 2032 V16 replaced the previous diesel gas engines, which are now still used for the emergency power supply.

In 2018, the airport purchased another TCG 2032 V16 genset in order to minimize the downtimes during the large maintenance rounds.

In early April, the dismantled engine was subjected to an intermediate overhaul according to maintenance level.

The engine was returned to the airport in mid-April and is now available for the next replacement. The airport is thus able to quickly replace any engine in the event of scheduled major maintenance measures or unexpected circumstances and go live within a short time.

The collaboration between the Munich airport and the MWM Service Center South is a fine example of how a close, long-standing customer relationship and premium services result in customer satisfaction and a partnership that lasts many years.

FROM GAS TO GRID POWER - ONE ALTERNATOR HAS A KEY ROLE

I

n a working partnership with Shenzhen Dongjiang Environmental Renewable Energy Co. Ltd. since 2011, power specislist NEWAGE® | STAMFORD® | AvK® provided the company with a STAMFORD® S-Range S7HV alternator for a system providing grid power to ShenZhen City, China. Energy is being generated thanks to a biogas plant generator which relies on this essential part.

Established in 2006, Shenzhen Dongjiang Environmental Renewable Energy Co. Ltd. currently operates municipal solid waste projects including landfill gas power generation, municipal landfill, sewage treatment, sludge treatment and kitchen waste treatment. With an installed capacity of 10 MW and an annual power generation of 50 million kWh, the China-based company has specified an alternator able to provide a total output of 10.5kV/1000kW. Capable of working at an ambient temperature at below 40°C, the STAMFORD® S7HV alternator was able to meet the stringent requirements laid down by the client in China.

The STAMFORD® S7HV provides winding features and options for bearing RTD’s which ensured the alternator fitted the customers specifications, to operate 7,500-8,000 hours per year.

NEWAGE® | STAMFORD® | AvK® also designed a special coupling for the alternator allowing this bespoke product to accommodate the existing alternator in the genset.

A company spokesman confirmed: “The requirements to suit were for an alternator giving a total output of 10.5kV/1000kW working at an ambient temperature at below 40°C. STAMFORD® S7HV alternator was able to easily accomplish this.”

Dongjiang Environmental Renewable Energy Co. Ltd. was established in 2006 and currently operates a number of municipal solid waste projects involving power generation.

These involve utilising landfill gas, municipal waste landfill, sewage treatment, sludge treatment and also kitchen waste treatment,.

One of its best-known operations is the “Xiaping Project of Using Household Waste to Generate Landfill Gas for Power Generation”.

This particular operation has an installed capacity of 10MW, and an

annual power generation involving 50 million kilowatt hours.

The Xiaping Solid Waste Landfill Phase II Project is responsible for handling the household waste treatment of particular areas of Luohu, Futian and Nanshan, as well as waste emergency treatment involving the whole city. The waste currently disposed of accounts for about 26% of the city’s total.

PROTECT YOUR UPS: SELECT THE CORRECT IP RATING

W

hen it comes to power protection a UPS is an important investment and so it needs to be kept in suitable conditions to optimise its design life fully, reports Aaron Oddy, Sales Engineer, Centiel UK. This sounds like a fairly obvious statement to make!

However, it’s not always possible for a UPS to be housed in a clean room environment. We often see UPS situated in damp, dusty or less than ideal conditions as there is no other option. Where a clean room environment is just not possible, it is necessary to consider the Ingress Protection (IP) rating of the solution to maximise its longevity and ensure it can keep protecting the critical load as it was designed to do, IP ratings are defined by an international standard.

This sets the levels of sealing effectiveness for electrical enclosures against intrusion from items such as dirt and moisture.

The IP rating is made up of two letters and two numbers, the key thing to focus on here are the numbers. The first number details the protection level for solid objects and the second number details the protection level for moisture.

A UPS IP rating of IP20 means the UPS enclosure only protects against solid objects of over 12mm and has no moisture protection.

Typically, a UPS within a data centre has an IP20 rating due to the clean environment. This level of ingress protection means it’s ‘finger proof’. In other words, safe to touch without fear of electrocution. It will also be suitable for the dust and moisture free installation areas typically found in clean environments such as comms rooms.

Higher ingress protection is needed for harsher environments such as industrial settings. These may include water treatment works, power stations, offshore, defence applications and some medical facilities.

The higher the IP rating, the more in-built protection is included within the UPS enclosure. For example: IP54 ensures the UPS is protected from limited amounts of dust and water spray from all angles. Extractor grills and fans can circulate air without it compromising the UPS. IP65 is likely to be the highest rating for a UPS. Other electrical solutions do have higher ratings which go up to IP69K enclosures, these systems are dust tight and have been proven to be resistant against liquids including chemicals, high temperatures and high pressure.

These systems are ideal for facilities with strict hygiene requirements.

However, this level of protection presents an issue for UPS solutions with integral batteries as there is not enough ventilation to enable low levels of gas which can be produced

by VRLA batteries to escape safely.

Although small, there is a risk of explosion and so for systems with integral batteries this is not an option.

The main point to remember is the more robust the equipment, the longer it will last in harsher environments and so up to a point, the higher the IP rating needs to be.

However, circumstances are all very individual and so it is worth discussing the proposed housing area of the UPS with our technical sales team well in advance so they can advise on the best option available. YANLOAD RIVER BAY PROJECT DEPLOYS NEW GENSET Chengdu-based OEM Simpson Power Equipment has supplied a generator set powered by a Perkins® 4008-30TAG3 engine for standby power. This is being used on one of China’s prestigious development initiatives, the Yanload River Bay real estate project.

or its standby power, the Yanload River Bay real estate project in China selected a Perkinspowered generator set from one of the country’s biggest original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Simpson Power Equipment. The generator set and its Perkins engine have lived up to expectations.

ACE COMMENTS ON PMI FIGURES FOR APRIL 2020 NEW PLAN TO CREATE THOUSANDS OF ‘GREEN COLLAR’ JOBS The heat networks industry, which delivers heat to close to 500,000 customers across the country as an alternative to heating from individual gas boilers, has launched the Heat Networks Industry Council (HNIC) at an online event with Energy and Clean Growth Minister, Kwasi Kwarteng MP. The industry has set out its pledge to support £30-50bn of investment and the creation of up to 35,000 new direct jobs by 2050, with the right policy frameworks in place.

Minister for Energy and Clean Growth Kwasi Kwarteng said: “Heat networks will play a vital role in a future net-zero economy by helping to decarbonise how we heat our buildings while creating new green jobs.

“The government’s £270m Green Heat Networks Fund underlines our support for the industry, and we back the new Heat Networks Industry Council to deliver on its ambitions for investment and job creation as part of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.”

Dan McGrail, Chair of The Heat Networks Industry Council said: “The heat networks industry can play a big role in helping the UK reach our net zero carbon targets.

“The pandemic has caused a difficult situation but, our industry is setting out our shared ambition to create investment and jobs, accelerate carbon reduction, deliver consistent and excellent customer experiences and ultimately create smarter, more liveable cities across the country.”
