The implementation of Stage V has been delayed for a year. It’s official. The European Parliament has agreed to, the Stage 5 transition deadlines for certain categories of engines to be fitted in non-road mobile machinery (NRMM). The vote paves the way for the final adoption and publication in the Official Journal of the amended version of Regulation (EU) 2016/1628.

Some experts have suggested that post-BREXIT the UK might delay full implementation and wait until the US agrees its version of Stage V Regulations (referred to as ‘Tier 5’ in the ‘States) making it easier to join with American markets when putative trade deals are subsequently agreed. The US regulations are expected to mirror current EU Stage V emissions standards for diesel generating equipment.

It is not surprising that the US-based diesel engine manufacturers want to match EU Stage V as they are keen to sell gensets in US and EU markets. It is also clear that EU and US emissions standards have been running in parallel for almost 10 years now and the EPA has already been matching emissions standards for Stage 3 / Tier 3, Stage 4 / Tier 4 and Stage 3b / Tier 4 interim. It is estimated that in six months or so the full details of Tier 5 are likely to be announced.

Rolls-Royce has acquired Kinolt, the Belgian specialist for dynamic, uninterruptible power supply. Kinolt will become part of Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems business unit and its MTU product and solutions brand. The Kinolt system is made up of a diesel engine which is coupled to a kinetic energy accu, via an electromagnetic clutch. The kinetic energy accu is the combination of a kinetic energy accu and a synchronous machine.

Atlas Copco has introduced four new models to its flagship QAS 5 range of mobile diesel generators, which are fully EU Stage V compliant - QAS 5 250, 325, 450 and 660. Operators can now reduce emissions and improve their carbon footprint, while also taking full advantage of the QAS 5 range’s compact size, quiet operation, enhanced fuel economy and low total cost of ownership, up to 660 kVA power, reports the company.

IN BRIEF NEW OFFICES IN FINLAND FOR AW-ENERGY OY AW-Energy Oy (AWE), the Finnish pioneer in global wave energy technology, has opened a new facility in Vantaa, Finland.

The move to larger premises located at Tikkurilantie 10, 01380 Vantaa, provides scope for AWE’s continued growth ambitions, and represents a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to the global renewables industry in the development of wave energy. The site at Tikkurilantie 10 provides research and development, and an extensive portfolio of engineering expertise, as well as demonstration, test and conference facilities.

It will help the company advance its technical and project management support for wave energy projects in EU, Asia and across the US, as more energy operators look to wave energy.

US OIL & GAS PRODUCER BUYS C600 MICROTURBINE Capstone Turbine Corporation, a lading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, has sold a C600 Signature Series (C600S) microturbine from a premier Southern California oil and gas producer.

Cal Microturbine, Capstone’s exclusive distributor in California, Hawaii and Nevada, won the order which is expected to be commissioned this autumn.

“Despite the significant COVID-19 impact on oil prices, we continue to see activity in the midstream oil and gas markets as customers look to lower operating costs and decarbonize the oil fields,” said Darren Jamison, President and Chief Executive Officer of Capstone Turbine. “The natural resource market represented 32% of our total revenue last year as we continue to receive follow-on orders from repeat customers. These customers are opting to convert from reciprocating engine-based technologies to lower emission and higher reliability microturbine-based solutions,” added Mr. Jamison.

The follow-on C600S microturbine order adds an additional 600 kilowatts (kW) of generation capacity to the customer’s existing Capstone fleet. The microturbines, fuelled by minimally processed wellhead gas, will produce electricity and provide prime power for the end-user’s Southern California location and on-site equipment.

Capstone’s microturbines can run on a wide range of fuels with various BTU content, requiring minimal treatment when compared to reciprocating engines, helping reduce the overall cost of the project while improving system reliability.

The C600S microturbine system will ship this summer in a four-bay enclosure which allows the customer to add an additional 200 kW microturbine and expand on-site generation capacity from 600 kW to 800 kW as more associated gas becomes available in the future. The customer selected Capstone microturbines again because of their demonstrated ability to lower operating costs while also requiring significantly less maintenance.

Capstone microturbines are recognized in the industry for their proven reliability in the field and superior product engineering, says the company.

COTTBUS COGENERATION PLANT IN BRANDEBURG ORDERS ACOUSTIC SYSTEMS CTM Ambiente - known for its work in the design construction and installation of turnkey integrated systems and solutions for acoustic reclamation in the energy sector - has been involved in the Cottbus cogeneration plant in Brandenburg, Germany. CTM Ambiente has been working on an important contract through its customer Cefla Engineering.

Cefla is a leading company in the energy, cogeneration plant and manageing technological systems. It too has stake in the Cottbus plant, a new 50MW cogeneration facility which will supply electricity and thermal energy to almost 100,000 residents.

The contract involves the building, installation and testing of the soundproofed air inlet and outlet systems of all the connected auxiliary equipment, which include five J920 gas engines genset ( Jenbacher), boiler, transformer, compressors, aux and hallway area.

A company spokesman comments: “CTM Ambient brings its skills and experience of all our engineers and technicians acquired in important recent projects and over the last 25 years in the turnkey integrated systems and solutions for acoustic reclamation.”

CTM Ambiente is a qualified Italian company well-known for providing soundproofing systems for a range of acoustic technologyand industrial plants internationally.

GOING GREEN: EDINBURGH REVEALS THE UK’S FIRST ECO-POWERED GREENSPACE Saughton Park in Edinburgh has become the UK’s first fully eco-powered greenspace thanks to support from SP Energy Networks’ Green Economy Fund.

The ground-breaking project was awarded almost £500,000 from SP Energy Networks’ £20million Green Economy Fund to support the installation of a micro-hydro scheme, a low carbon energy solution that is the first of its kind in the country.

The new system in Saughton Park uses unique micro-hydro technology on the Water of Leith, generating electricity for all the park’s needs, including the running of two ground source heat pump systems. These provide heat for the park’s glasshouse, buildings and the café in a completely eco-friendly way.

By combining a micro-hydro scheme to generate electricity and ground source heat pumps to generate heat, the park’s natural assets are now helping decarbonise its energy demand. Estimates suggest this new technology will prevent more than 90 tonnes of carbon-dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere each year – the equivalent of fully charging 11.5 million smartphones.

IN BRIEF US$6MILLION INVESTMENT IN BUMBUNA HYDRO II IN SIERRA LEONE InfraCo Africa, part of the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), has struck a deal with Joule Africa to provide US$6m of funding to the 143MW Bumbuna Hydro II initiative in Sierra Leone.

The funding reflects a collaboration which involves the national private sector and development finance institutions.

Based on the Upper Seli River, 230km north east of Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, the Bumbuna Hydro II project has been designed to provide significant additional power to the national grid. Consumers will benefit from increased reliability and cost savings via affordable tariffs and reduced reliance on expensive, polluting diesel backup generators.

GOLD FIELDS INSTALLS CUMMINS GAS GENERATORS The Agnew hybrid renewable microgrid system – Australia’s largest – consists of a new off-grid 23 MW power station incorporating gas, photovoltaic solar and diesel power generation, and 18 MW wind generation, a 13 MW battery and an advanced microgrid control system.

During 12 months of operation, the 56 MW installed capacity at Agnew is equivalent to powering 11,500 homes and will mitigate 46,400 t of carbon dioxide – equivalent to taking 12,700 cars off the road. All the energy produced at the site is used entirely by the power station supplying Gold Fields’ Agnew Gold Mine in the northern goldfields of Western Australia.

To meet the crucial requirement of continuous and reliable power at temperatures up to 45°C, Gold Fields used nine Cummins QSV91G gas generators.

The QSV91G generators can operate in high ambient conditions and provide high impact step loads and fast ramp rates while maintaining power quality.

In addition, Cummins also installed two QSK60 diesel generator sets to provide additional power during peak periods of demand, in addition to providing the ability to black start the power station in the event of a power outage.

A Cummins digital master control (DMC8000) was also installed to communicate with EDL’s microgrid controller to balance the power demand from the mine.

David Eccleston, Technical Sales Support Lead, Cummins Power Generation, said: “The QSV91G lean-burn gas generator at the power station is designed to provide Gold Fields with a solution that will provide continuous and reliable power in high ambient conditions to ensure the project can be a success.”

Gold Fields wanted to create an innovative hybrid renewable energy solution at the site, which has operated for over 30 years, with an annual gold production of approximately 220,000 oz per annum.

To ensure this project was a success, Cummins collaborated with distributed energy producer EDL, which was selected due to its excellent track record.

MAN ENERGY FOR SALE - MITSUBISHI, INNIO & CUMMINS IN THE RUNNING?

SNAM & BAKER HUGHES TEST HYDROGEN BLEND TURBINE

Reuters has reported that Cummins has pitched an offer for Volkswagen’s company MAN Energy Solutions. In May 2020 Volkswagen reported that it was willing to sell or offer a partnership in its MAN Energy Solutions as part of a corporate restructuring.

As of July 23rd media reports have suggested that MAN Energy Solutions is being sought by at least three companies: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, INNIO or Cummins.Volkswagen has received bids from the big three for its business, says a Reuters report.

A price tag of of around €1.5 to €2.2 billion has been suggested and bids for the company are likely to be entered by February 28th, 2021.

VW has suggested it will be willing to maintain a significant minority share of the corporation.

Baker Hughes and Snam have announced that they have successfully completed testing of the world’s first hybrid hydrogen turbine designed for a gas network.

The test paves the way to implement adoption of hydrogen blended with natural gas in Snam’s current transmission network infrastructure.

The test took place at Baker Hughes’ facility in Florence, Italy with a Baker Hughes’ NovaLT12 gas turbine.

The experiment marks the first time that a gas infrastructure operator such as Snam has tested this type of turbine for its existing assets.

The turbine will be installed by 2021 at Snam’s compressor station of Istrana, in the province of Treviso, Italy.

Once installed, the NovaLT12 will not only help to compress and move hydrogen fuel blends through Snam’s transmission network of pipelines, but the

turbine will simultaneously use the same fuel to power itself.

Snam has the most extensive transmission network among European peers (over 41,000 km globally) and the largest natural gas storage capacity (ca. 20 billion cubic meters globally).

The recent test validates the viability of Snam’s current infrastructure, including the NovaLT12, to support the transition to hydrogen. By blending 10% hydrogen into the total annual gas capacity transported

by Snam, it is estimated seven billion cubic metres of H2 could be introduced into the network each year. This amount is the equivalent to the annual gas consumption of three million families.

IN BRIEF BRITISHVOLT TO OPEN GIGAFACTORY IN WALES UK startup company Britishvolt is planning on opening a 30GWh battery plant at Bro Tathan in Wales, UK. The company’s ambitious £1.2bn plan foresees the construction of the UK’s first gigafactory for the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries.

It has so far raised about £10m of the total amount of funds needed from a group of Scandinavian and Middle Eastern investors.

The company also intends to build a 200MW solar power plant at the site in 2021 to supply the factory and reduce its carbon footprint.

WORLEY ACQUIRES TW POWER SERVICES Worley has acquired Ferrovial’s 50% shareholding of TW Power Services Pty Ltd (TWPS) for $20 million, increasing its stake to 100%.

TWPS is an operations and maintenance (O&M) business providing services to support critical power infrastructure across Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. TWPS is experienced across a range of power technologies including solar, wind, hydro and thermal power.

Approximately one third of Australian power generation capacity is supported by TWPS. TWPS also operates, monitors and maintains gas pipeline assets.

A spokesman commented: “Combined with TWPS, Worley helps our customers as they transition to a low-carbon future. In line with Worley’s transformation strategy, this acquisition demonstrates our commitment to supporting our customers through their energy transition.”

FUEL CELL POWER WILL REDUCE GHG EMISSIONS, AIR POLLUTION & ELECTRIC COSTS, AND INCREASE RELIABILITY Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) has begun powering two of its largest Los Angeles-area facilities with Bloom Energy solid oxide fuel cells. The switch to fuel cells will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, air pollutants and the cost of power, as well as provide reliable electricity independent of the power grid.

To produce electricity, Bloom Energy’s fuel cells could use natural gas, renewable natural gas, or hydrogen. The fuel cells at SoCalGas intake natural gas and oxygen, and through an electrochemical reaction, produce electricity without any combustion. Bloom Energy Servers can operate at 60% efficiency and are considered one of the most efficient power solutions currently available. More information on how fuel cells work may be found here.

“Using Bloom Energy’s fuel cells for our facilities is yet another way that SoCalGas is demonstrating our commitment to be an industry leader supporting a 21st century energy system,” said Maryam Brown, president of SoCalGas. “These onsite generation systems will provide clean, affordable and resilient energy to key facilities so that we can ensure safe and reliable service to our 22 million customers.”

CLARKE ENERGY & CO-ENERGY AMERICA ANNOUNCE SUPPORT FOR WORLD COGENERATION DAY Clarke Energy and its sister company Co-Energy America have announced their support for World Cogeneration Day, This will be held on September 4th, 2020, and will highlight key international cogeneration projects.

Cogeneration or combined heat and power technology (CHP) plays an important role in providing efficient localised power and supporting carbon emissions reduction.

Gas engine CHP plants can use renewable gas such as biogas, biomethane or hydrogen or low carbon gases such as natural gas at high efficiency and close to the site of use.

Generating electricity and heat locally means lower losses and better use of the fuel, translating to lower carbon emissions.

Embedded power plants also enable cost-effective energy resilience in

countries which are prone to natural disasters or have unreliable power distribution networks.

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) have received proposals from companiies for a planned high-voltage subsea transmission project to connect Adnoc’s offshore oil and gas production facilities to ADPower’s onshore national electricity grid.

“This project will meet our future offshore power needs, even as our fields mature, using diverse and sustainable sources,” Said Yaser Saeed Al-Mazrouei, Adnoc Upstream executive director. “It will enable Adnoc to utilise the natural gas currently used to power our offshore facilities.”

Nidec ASI, the Nidec Industrial Solutions platform belonging to the Nidec Group, is supplying battery energy storage solutions (BESS) for three major projects in Finland and Sweden.

The first project ibeing supplied is in Finland for NEOEN, one of the most important independent producers of renewable energy in the world. Its site will become the largest BESS plant in the Nordic countries, with a power capacity of 30 MW. The site, located near the city of Lappeenranta in the South East of Finland. It will provide the national electricity grid with all the benefits of rapid and safe energy storage, eliminating the problem of demand peaks and stabilizing the grid.

Nidec ASI will supply and install all the BESS components, inclusive of the auxiliary systems, up to the grid connection point located within FINGRID substation. NIDEC ASI is currently delivering the first containers on site.

The other two projects (9 MW and 6 MW) will be developed in Sweden by Nidec ASI, in the Lowen and Edsele sites for Uniper SE. Again, Nidec will be acting as EPC contractor and will install two complete battery storage systems which will make it possible to avoid grid congestion, store any surplus renewable energy produced and return it to the grid, thus guaranteeing its stability at all times.

Battery storage systemsare becoming an integral part of modern electricity grids for Scandinavian countries, as the key elements are developed and supplied. Nidec ASI has gradually consolidated its position as a technological leader and supplier of this equipment.

FIRST HYDRO COMPANY’S DINORWIG PLANT IS FASTEST OF ITS TYPE

VALMET TO DELIVER BIOMASS FUEL FEEDING SYSTEM TO INDONESIA

Operated by First Hydro Company, the UK-based Dinorwig power plant is currently the fastest pumped storage installation of its kind, capable of reaching maximum generation of 1,728 megawatt in less than 16 seconds.

It is also the largest installation of its kind in Europe and capable of providing continuous power to 3 million people in Wales for five-and-a-half-hours.

To preserve the natural beauty of the Snowdonia National Park, the power station is built deep inside the Elidir Fawr mountain.

Water is pumped up to the top of a mountain and stored in reservoirs. When needed, the water is released and used to generate electricity.

ABB was recently employed to conduct a stability study at the site to ensure continued safety and reliability of power supply after three decades, in operation.

As a result of the study recommendations ABB was employed to replace the existing equipment at the

IN BRIEF CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON 250MW DUBAI HYDRO POWER STATION Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) have confirmed that tunnelling operations have begun at its 250 MW hydroelectric power station in Hatta, This is a unique project for the GCC region, built at a cost of US$386.5 million and scheduled for completion in February 2025.

The construction contract for the pumped-storage hydroelectric power station has been awarded to a consortium led by Austrian construction company Strabag, with key partners Strabag Dubai, Andritz Hydro and Ozkar. Électricité de France (EDF) is the consultant for the project, which iwill take over four years to complete, says the company.

RIELLO GIVES A HELPING HAND FOR HOSPITAL ICU WARD Riello Elettronica provided vital medical equipment worth €200,000 to the intensive care department of Legnago Hospital to help doctors treat patients infected with coronavirus. The €200 000 donation from Riello Elettronica has provided a monitoring centre and eight patient monitors for Legano’s key ICU operations.

Riello previously provided the Municipality of Legnago with personal protective equipment which was passed to the staff at the hospital’s health facilities and to a retirement home.

PLANT & ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM PROVIDED FOR THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract to deliver a state-of-theart power plant and energy storage system to the US Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA).

The plant will be delivered and installed on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) basis. It will be exceptional in that it will be capable of burning both liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and light fuel oil (LFO), while also being fitted with batteries utilising Wärtsilä’s state of the art GEMS energy management platform to provide optimised energy operations. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in June 2020.

The four Wärtsilä 32LG engines will deliver a total output of 36 MW, while the energy storage system will add further 9 MW for up to twohours. In addition to being Wärtsilä’s first engine/hybrid power plant sale, this will also be the first installation of the Wärtsilä LG engines, and the company’s first engines capable of burning both LPG and LFO. “The Wärtsilä plant will provide much needed additional baseload capacity to the Island’s electricity supply. It will improve the system’s reliability, while at the same time giving us additional fuel flexibility,” commented Lawrence Kupfer, CEO, USVI Water and Power Authority.

NEXANS WINS MAJOR POWER CABLE CONTRACT FOR SERBIA’S LARGEST POWER PLANT Nexans has signed a €2.1 million contract with Coptech to deliver 206 km of fire retardant power cables for the new flue gas desulphurisation unit at Serbia’s 1,560 megawatt (MW) Nikola Tesla A coalfired power plant.

The project is part of the Serbian government’s pledge to invest €14 billion in boosting the country’s economy, including the development of its power generation sector.

Nikola Tesla A is part of the Termoelektrane Nikola Tesla (TENT) power generation complex in Obrenovac, a municipality of Belgrade,

Serbia’s capital city. The addition of the flue gas desulfurization unit is a key step in achieving a major reduction in sulphur-dioxide and particulates emissions from the plant to enable it to meet stringent EU environmental standards.

COVID-19 LOCKDOWN MEANS MORE POWER MUST BE GENERATED TO KEEP SAUDIS COOL IN 50°C CONDITIONS

IN BRIEF EIB SUPPORTS GASFIRED POWER PLANT IN GREECE The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a deal with Mytilineos to finance the construction of an 826MW combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Greece.

The EIB will provide a €125m loan for the €322m CCGT Agios Nikolaos power plant.

When completed the plant will generate electricity to meet the energy requirements of the region, while supporting the shutdown of almost all lignite power plants in Greece by 2023. Additionally, the power plant will enable increased electricity network interconnection between mainland Greece and surrounding islands. Lignite currently accounts for a total of 4GW of power in Greece, or 22% of total capacity in the country.

Saudi Arabia uses 726,000 barrels of oil daily for power generation — more than double the amount for the months of January and February. As the Middle East enters the hottest days of summer, the Kingdom is set to burn potentially record amounts of crude oil to run its power plants and keep its citizens comfortably air-conditioned.

Power consumption always soars in July and August, when temperatures in the country can rise above 50°C. That compels the government to use crude or fuel oil in addition to the much cleaner natural gas that normally fires the plants. But IN 2020 tHERE IS higher demand, with the coronavirus pandemic forcing many Saudis to cancel their summer holidays abroad.

Another difference is that record cuts to Saudi Arabia’s oil production since April - part of a push by Opec members to prop up prices in the face of the virus - have reduced its supplies of gas, most of which come from the same wells as crude.

Saudi Arabia has already begun working with other GCC countries (Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf) to bring in more power through linking their national power grids. Ultimately, plans include linking the GCC grid with the rest of the Arab world and Europe, through Turkey and Syria. With the United Nations projecting that its population will grow from 28 million in 2010 to 45 million in 2050 ensuring there is sufficient electricity generating capacity to satisfy demand, both now and in the future is proving to be an ongoing challenge for the Saudi authorities.

U.S.-VIETNAM JV PLANS TO INVEST UP TO $6 BILLION IN LNG POWER Chan May LNG, a USVietnamese joint venture, plans to invest up to US$6 billion in a power project in Vietnam as it seeks to cash in on the Southeast Asian country’s rising demand for electricity.

Vietnam faces the risk of severe power shortages from 2021 as demand outpaces construction of new plants.

The project in Thua Thien Hue province will include a 4-gigawatt power plant, an LNG terminal and storage facilities,.

Construction of the power plant is scheduled to beginin 2021, so that the first phase of 2.4 GW will be operational from 2024 and the entire plant from 2027.

“We have big support from the US government for the project, as they have LNG to sell,” he said. “We have a number of U.S. LNG suppliers and we are doing the shopping right now,” comments CEO John Rockhold.

LNG a year, he said, adding it would help narrow the trade deficit the U.S. has incurred with Vietnam.

Chan May LNG, which is 60% owned by U.S. investors and 40% by Vietnamese investors, said a number of institutions had shown interest in financing the projects, including U.S. Exim Bank, the U.S. International Development Finance Corp. and the International Finance Corp.

Rockhold confirmed that the plant will use turbines from General Electric to generate power.

AGGREKO OFFERS UK GOVERNMENT UP TO 1,300 GENERATORS TO PROVIDE VITAL POWER SUPPLIES TO COVID-19 TEMPORARY TESTING SITES Aggreko, the leading supplier of global temporary power, has offered the UK government up to 1,300 small generator units pro-bono to support the set-up of COVID-19 testing sites across the UK. In response to growing demand for enhanced testing for COVID-19, temporary testing sites are being stationed across the country – in major retailer carparks through to unused theme park facilities. As the number of temporary testing sites increases, so too does the need for access to reliable, modular power, particularly as many of these sites will not have easy connections to mains electricity.

Aggreko, which is headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland, has offered the UK government the use of its available fleet of small canopy generators - up to 1,300 units – which provide flexible, modular power to temporary venues.

As with most of Aggreko’s products, these generators can be remotely monitored without the need for an engineer to be physically present. This design feature is advantageous during this time of social distancing, as it will help limit the number of people physically present at designated testing sites, says the company.

CHIAHUI POWER CORPORATION’S COMBINED- CYCLE POWER PLANT IN TAIWAN AWARDED ‘MODEL SITE’ FOR BEST IN-CLASS SAFETY AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT Chiahui Power Corporation’s combined-cycle power plant in Chiayi province, Taiwan, has been awarded for Taiwan’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration Agency’s (OSHA) Model Site Award- a top honour for safety protocols - marking the first time a construction site from an IPP project was selected as a model site in Taiwan.

The award followed two days on-site best practice sharing event organized by Taiwan’s OSHA and hosted by GE (NYSE: GE), in charge of the construction of the site. The event took place on 2nd-3rd July 2020, with multiple sessions attended by more than 130 visitors and OSHA representatives.

Based on the needs of promoting a healthy and safe workplace, Taiwan OSHA’s tasks include planning and executing occupational safety and health, occupational accidents labor protection, labour inspection and supervision to ensure safe and healthy workforce to enhance national competitiveness.

“We selected Chia Hui Power Plant as a model site for Southern Taiwan for the demonstrated excellence in training management, the permit to work management system and safe lifting operations, which we recommend as a best practice in construction” said Mr. Hsu, Southern Taiwan OSHA Director. “We are pleased to award the project to private sector projects including the Chiahui power plant”.

GE is currently constructing the full turnkey power plant which will be powered by GE’s record-setting 7HA.02 gas turbine. The heart of the plant will comprise of one generating block, equipped with one of GE’s 7HA.02 gas turbines powering an H65 generator, a STF-A650 steam turbine powering an H33 generator, and a heat recovery steam generator.

“In April, 14 months after the commencement of the project, the Chia Hui plant achieved 1 million man-hours without time lost to injury. At GE, safety is of paramount importance and that focus was instrumental in the site receiving the Model Site designation” said Wu Ta-an, Country General Manager GE Gas Power.

COVID-19 MITIGATION HAS DELAYED CONSTRUCTION OF SOME GENERATORS SAYS THE EIA According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) March and April Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory data, COVID-19 mitigation efforts have resulted in slightly more delays than average in the commercial operation dates of proposed electric generator projects.

About 20% of the projects scheduled to come online in the next 12 months experienced some delay. In March and April 2020, 21% and 29% of projects, respectively, experienced delays, some of which were attributed to efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In March 2020, 163 of the 772 proposed generating units delayed their operational date, with 41 citing COVID-19 as a reason for delay. Of the 746 generating units reporting in April, 220 were delayed and 67 of these reported COVID-19 as a reason. The delays attributed to COVID-19 during these two months represent 3.1 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, or 18% of total delayed capacity.

Altogether, sixty-one unique projects, with a total of 2.4 GW of generating capacity, under construction during March and April were delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic., says the report from the EIA.

COLOSSAL SIX MONTHS FOR OFFSHORE WIND RENEWABLE ENERGY INVESTMENT UP IN 2020

RENEWABLE ENERGY IS RIDING HIGH Renewable energy capacity investment showed great resilience in the first half of 2020, in the face of the unprecedented economic shock caused by COVID-19, according to the latest figures from research company BloombergNEF (BNEF).

The data, drawn from BNEF’s world-leading database of deals and projects, show that one sub-sector of renewables – offshore wind – had by far its busiest half year ever for final investment decisions, and this more than offset declines in investment in solar, onshore wind and biomass.

Offshore wind financings in 1H 2020 totalled $35 billion, up 319% year-on-year and in fact well above 2019’s record full-year figure (a revised $31.9 billion).

The first half of this year saw investment decisions made on 28 sea-based wind farms, including the largest ever, the 1.5GW Vattenfall Hollandse Zuid array off the coast of the Netherlands, costing an estimated $3.9 billion.

Other major offshore deals

“INVESTMENT IN NEW BIOMASS AND WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANTS FELL 34% TO $3.7 BILLION, WHILE THAT IN GEOTHERMAL JUMPED 594% TO $676 MILLION. SMALL HYDRO PROJECTS OF LESS THAN 50MW ATTRACTED AN ESTIMATED $576 MILLION, DOWN 14%.” included the 1.1GW SSE Seagreenproject off the UK coast, at an estimated $3.8 billion; the 600MW CIP Changfang Xidao array off Taiwan, at an estimated $3.6 billion; and the Fecamp and SaintBrieuc projects in French waters, together totalling 993MW and $5.4 billion.

There were no fewer than 17 Chinese installations financed, led by the Guangdong Yudean Yangjiang Yangxi Shapaat 600MW and $1.8 billion.

Albert Cheung, head of analysis at BNEF, commented: “We expected to see Covid-19 affecting renewable energy investment in the first half, via delays in the financing process and to some auction programs. There are signs of that in both solar and onshore wind, but the overall global figure has proved amazingly resilient –

Tom Harries, head of wind analysis, said: “Offshore wind is benefitting from the 67% reduction in levelized costs achieved since 2012, and to the performance of the latest, giant turbines.

“But the first half of this year also owed a lot to a rush in China to finance and build, in order to take advantage of a feed-in tariff before it expires at the end of 2021. I expect a slowdown in offshore wind investment globally in the second half, with potentially a new spike early next year.”

Overall investment in new renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro-electric dams of more than 50MW) was $132.4 billion in the first half of 2020, up 5% from a revised $125.8 billion in the same period of 2019. Onshore wind investment slipped 21% to $37.5 billion, while that for solar fell 12% to $54.7 billion.

Investment in new biomass and waste-to-energy plants fell 34% to $3.7 billion, while that in geothermal jumped 594% to $676 million. Small hydro projects of less than 50MW attracted an estimated $576 million, down 14%, and biofuel production plants $250 million, down 82%.

Looking at the figures by location, China was the largest market yet again, investing $41.6 billion in 1H 2020, up 42% compared to the same period in 2019 thanks to its offshore wind boom.

Europe secured $36.5 billion, up 50%, while the U.S. slipped 30% to $17.8 billion. Japan saw financings rise 14% to an estimated $10.8 billion, but India fell 49% to $2.7 billion and Brazil was down 26% at $2.5 billion. The Netherlands were up 231% at $6.9 billion, France up 306% at $6.2 billion, the U.K. 265% higher at $5.7 billion, Spain down 11% at $3.7 billion, and Germany up 20% at $3.6 billion.

Angus McCrone, chief editor at BNEF, said that a clearer picture of the impact of Covid-19 on green energy investment will come with the full-year 2020 figures.

He explains: “Renewables have been helped by vastly improved competitiveness and by investor appetite for assets offering secure cash flows.

“However, project developers face the challenge that key people, whether at the permitting, financing or construction stages, can’t meet face-to-face. And buyers of small-scale solar systems are sensitive to changes in consumer confidence.” www.Bloomberg.com

FIRST DUAL-FUEL ENGINES FOR KAWASAKI HEAVY INDUSTRIES

awasaki Heavy Industries has ordered two dual-fuel engines to supply 24 MW of flexible capacity to the island of Miyako MAN Energy Solutions is the company which has been commissioned by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) to supply two MAN 12V51/60 dual-fuel engines to a Japanese power plant. This represents a first for Japan’s domestic power market.

The engines are bound for the Miyako Island power plant, which is owned and operated by the Okinawa Electric Power Company (OEPC).

The dual-fuel engines will generate around 24 MW of electrical power in its role as the primary base-load provider for the small Japanese holiday island and its 50,000 inhabitants, improving efficiency as well as drastically reducing emissions.

The new engines offer dual-fuel capability for maximum reliability “The order for Miyako is a first for the Japanese power-generation market as these will be the very first dual-fuel engines to be installed in the whole country. Now we want to prove to our Japanese customers the various benefits that dual-fuel engines offer in supplying remote regions with reliable and

MAN Energy Solutions was already able to display its engines’ worth, as well as its customer-oriented service also to OEPC as two MAN 18V48/60B engines were installed some years ago at a power plant on the neighbouring island of Ishigaki.

“Our engines will mainly run on natural gas but, due to their dual-fuel capability, also offer maximum fuel flexibility and reliability. This is highly important for independent power supply for remote islands such as Miyako,” explained Höhler.

The MAN 51/60 liquid fuel engine is cost-effective, efficient and a strong performer. It’s also easy to upgrade to dual fuel or gas capability if needed. The engine is also available with two-stage

turbocharging.

It offers engine speed 500/514 rpm, a frequency of 50/60 Hz, and up to 21,600 kWm, The Miyako Islands are a group of islands in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, belonging to the Ryukyu Islands.

They are situated between the Okinawa Island and Yaeyama Islands. Today, Miyako island is home to 55,914 people, most of whom are ethnic Ryukyuans.

GENSETS FITTED WITH HC5 & UC27 ALTERNATORS GO TO ISLAMABAD

W

ith extra hospitals being built globally to help combat treatment of Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients, the genset manufacturer VISA SpA (established in the 1960s and operating in almost 100 countries worldwide) turned to STAMFORD® to fill a particular customer’s requirements.

The project involved supplying alternators for gensets installed for a 1.25 MVA backup power plant, consisting of 2 units of 500 kVA and 1 unit of 250 kVA. A STAMFORD® UC27 alternator and two STAMFORD® HC5 alternators were purchased for an Isolation Hospital and Infection Treatment Centre in Islamabad, Pakistan.

This was built initially to fight against Coronavirus (COVID-19) effects and there are plans for it to be later to become a fully-fledged infectious treatment hospital.

The three genset units fitted with two STAMFORD® HC5 alternators and a STAMFORD® UC27 alternator had a fundamental role in providing an uninterrupted power supply to the hospital, ensuring backup power in case of mains failure.

Due to non-availability of mains source (i.e.

WAPDA in Pakistan) at site, initially the gensets were tasked to run 24/7 supplying a mains load to the hospital until the mains source was available.

The fast pace of the pandemic - plus VISA’s close working relationship with STAMFORD® combined with VISA’s global presence - allowed the units to be delivered to the project site in Islamabad, Pakistan, within 10 days.

The quick delivery however, did not compromise product performance, efficiency and reliability, the alternators were still considered an ideal solution for this high level application.

All the diesel generating sets were delivered and installed according to the customer’s strict schedule, demonstrating the company’s ability to work to stipulated project deadlines, also under the most challenging conditions.

PACIFIC ISLANDS GO GREEN WITH SF6-FREE TECHNOLOGY EEC Engie has been providing energy to the Caledonian territory for over 90 years, including to the Pacific islands of New Caledonia. Island nations are one of the first areas to be affected by climate change. This makes reducing the use of traditional CO2-emitting energy sources and focusing on local, renewable energy sources particularly important for helping to improve the island’s selfsufficiency while also meeting local demand.

“It is important that we have more awareness of the international problems of ecology and the environment,” Roecker said. “We have the largest lagoon in the world and we have a lot of ecosystems endemic to the territory, so designing a clean industrial concept, without greenhouse gases is important -- it’s logical.”

The remote island location presents difficult and unique challenges for EEC Engie. New Caledonia is halfway around the world from Engie’s French operations base. This means that EEC Engie not only needs to manage the purchasing part of its business, but also logistics and the complexity of transportation -- all of which must be taken into account in order to be efficient.

Recycling SF6 is also complicated in New Caledonia because the island does not currently have channels for reprocessing SF6. The medium has been used in electrical equipment for decades.

While it is very effective for insulating and breaking, it is also harmful to the environment because it is a potent greenhouse gas. New SF6-free MV switchgear uses only pure air insulation and vacuum interruption technology to eliminate the use of SF6.

“We were looking for a green and easy-to-use solution that no longer uses SF6. It was obvious to work with Schneider Electric.”

Roecker added. “We trust the manufacturer. The reliability of their equipment and their knowledge is a major asset. We benefit from Schneider Electric’s experience and innovation capacity.”

EEC Engie’s main requirement for this pilot program was to eliminate the use of the greenhouse gas SF6. Other considerations were to maintain the same level of safety, the same footprint, and minimize changes to operations. Schneider Electric offered a more ecological and intelligent substation.

Located in Nouméa, the capital of New Caledonia, the green EcoStruxure-ready substation uses innovative new SF6-free MV switchgear technology combined with a connected new generation transformer.

The equipment is capable of exchanging data with EEC Engie’s energy management control system, an essential element for deploying the smart grid – all with a minimal ecological footprint.

“Using a technology that eliminates SF6, using air and vacuum, is a major advantage. It is a major advance in terms of environmental protection,” according to Roecker. “SF6-free MV switchgear technology is safe for the environment. There is no need to store any gas bulbs for reprocessing. Another gas would require the creation of a waste reprocessing centre, which is very difficult to set up due to our remote island location.”

A Plug & Play solution The product is easy to use because “SF6-free switchgear is identical to the previous version. At the technical level, there is no change,” according to Roecker.

“These new units have the same size and connection as the existing equipment, so there is no change in operation for our teams. The technicians have already completely mastered the technology in front of them. This reduces implementation time and avoids supply interruption for installation of the remotecontrol mechanism. Replacing existing SM6 cubicles with the SF6- free switchgear also eliminates the expenses of infrastructure modifications and brings cost savings.”

A complete digital solution for equipment and operator safety The innovative kiosk uses SF6-free medium voltage switchgear, a new-generation Minera connected MV/LV transformer with extended digital capabilities, and a dielectric based on biodegradable vegetable oil.

The SF6-free switchgear and the new Minera transformer connect to Easergy T300. The powerful remote terminal unit (RTU) manages bidirectional and intermittent power flow, improves SAIDI, and optimizes MV and LV networks. It also delivers sustainability and efficiency data to the network.

Information from sensors and equipment is collected, analyzed, and transmitted.

The Easergy TH110 wireless thermal sensors installed in the kiosk provide 24/7 monitoring of the equipment via ZigBee communication. Signal issues that may arise during operations would normally only be identified during maintenance, such as problems from equipment, climate, or temperatures. This feedback is provided to technicians on a mobile device for faster intervention.

The Schneider Electric digital solution allows EEC Engie to remotely monitor the substation for better service continuity for the inhabitants of Nouméa, which is an important goal because it is one of the major indicators with a permanent objective of improvement.

LITHIUM-ION CELLS HAVE BEEN DELIVERED TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

G

S Yuasa Lithium-ion cells have been delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) for the fourth time.

The transfer marks the successful completion of battery deliveries to support a project to upgrade the craft’s battery system.

Since the initial delivery in December 2016, GS Yuasa have supplied 24 of their state-of-the-art Li-ion cells to the spacecraft, replacing the older nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells previously used.

Due to the high energy density for their mass, just 24 of GS Yuasa’s Li-ion cells are needed to replace 48 of the NiMH batteries previously used.

The new batteries will be replaced by astronauts during space walks outside the space station over the coming months.

The Li-ion cells were transported on board a H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) which blasted off from Tanegashima Space Center on 20th May 2020.

The rocket and craft were specifically designed and operated by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency to resupply the International Space Station.

GS Yuasa batteries are also used in this HTV. The battery manufacturer was chosen to supply the ISS which is the largest artificial object in space. In 2012 GS Yuasa also supplied a range of other satellites with cells and recently became the first manufacturer to exceed four million Watt-hours of energy storage in orbit.

All energy on board the ISS is produced by solar panels and stored in the space craft’s batteries. This stored energy is then used to power onboard systems during nocturnal periods – of which there are 16 every 24 hours due to the ISS’s orbit around the earth.

On July 1st, 2020, NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Robert Behnken began a spacewalk from the International Space Station to replace lithium ion batteries in one of the station’s power channels.

Both astronauts are veteran spacewalkers. This is the eighth venture outside for both Cassidy and Behnken, according to NASA. These spacewalks represent the culmination of a series of power upgrades which began on January 2017 to replace nickel-hydrogen batteries with new lithium ion batteries.

This spacewalk involved replacing batteries for one of the power channels on the far starboard truss of the station. Also scheduled for later spacewalks will be routine power and ethernet cables maintenance, and other preparations for future power system upgrades.

These cables will provide better views on future spacewalks, according to

NASA. The new batteries each have a mass of 428 pounds.

The battery replacements, which will have a 20-year lifetime, will leave the station in a much better shape for the long term, said Kenneth Todd, deputy International Space Station program manager.

Behnken commented: “When the space station is in the sun, it’s collecting energy and it needs to store for when it’s in the dark. As they’re cycled time and time again these batteries, wear down and need to be replaced - and so periodically that maintenance is required.” www.yuasa.com

NEW PURCHASE INVOLVES UPS EQUIPMENT FOR SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEMS

olls-Royce has acquired Kinolt, the Belgian specialist for dynamic, uninterruptible power supply. Kinolt will become part of Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems business unit and its MTU product and solutions brand.

Rolls-Royce is effectively strengthening its business in power supply for safety-critical systems with the completion of the acquisition of Kinolt S.A., a Belgian-based specialist in dynamic uninterruptible power supply. The Kinolt system is made up of a diesel engine which is coupled to a kinetic energy accu, via an electromagnetic clutch.

This acquisition is another important step on the strategic journey of Power Systems towards becoming a full-service provider of integrated solutions.

Kinolt’s uninterruptible emergency power supply technology is particularly well suited to applications where space is at a premium, such as urban areas or installations in existing buildings and complements Rolls-Royce’s own MTU branded solutions for large scale and greenfield sites.

As a result, the deal is expected to result in cost and revenue synergies, medium-term long-term shareholder value in the back-up power generation business.

The acquisition of Kinolt will give Rolls-Royce a market-leading solution for businesses and local authorities who experienced issues with supply, or do not wish to run the risk again.

“We originally signed the deal to acquire Kinolt before the full global impact of Covid-19 was apparent,” added Schell.

“Since then we have rigorously examined the rationale for the transaction and the opportunities it presents to our business and concluded that the arguments in favour of the acquisition are even stronger than before.”

Power Generation is already the top-selling segment within the Power Systems business. In the future it is expected to be the only manufacturer in the world able to

supply customers with all components and consequently a complete uninterrupted power generation system in the power range from 200 to 3,200 kVA, says Rolls-Royce.

Kinolt’s technology consists of a combination of rotating, kinetic mass storage devices, a diesel engine and a generator that can also be used as an electric motor. MTU engines from Rolls-Royce are often already used within Kinolt’s solutions.

The Kinolt system is connected between the external power supply system and safety-critical equipment and supplies the latter with the required electrical power during normal operation.

The grid frequency and voltage are generally more stable than the grid of public power suppliers.

This is necessary because data servers, computer-controlled systems or sensitive devices such as those in hospitals can fail in the event of voltage and frequency fluctuations.

There are now nine generators in the range, providing fast ‘plug and play’ power from 80 to 200 kVA on Stage 3A, and from 250 to 660 kVA on Stage V. Events and industrial sites in urban environments are increasingly demanding quieter portable energy equipment and so the QAS 5 generators are designed to be especially silent in operation, with noise levels as low as 85 dBA. This is on average 5-8 dBA quieter than comparable generators depending on the application and load profile. This quiet performance is thanks to advanced technologies including variable speed drive (VSD) air cooling, silencers and a special isolated compartment for the power pack.

Space is a premium on any site, and the QAS 5 models are compact, with a 20 per cent smaller footprint than alternative generators in its class. As such, they are easy to transport and position on-site.

The fast paralleling is down to an innovative Power Management System (PMS), which helps operators to efficiently manage the generators by starting and stopping the units when the load increases or decreases. The load on each generator remains at a level that optimises fuel consumption.

The PMS eliminates the need for generators to run with low load levels, which can cause engine damage and shorten the life expectancy of the equipment. The QAS 5 Stage V models include new user-friendly touch screen controllers: Qc4004 + Qd070.

The PMS coupled with an integrated VDS to power the cooling fan deliver excellent fuel efficiency enabling operators to achieve up to a 5% reduction in fuel consumption and saving in operational costs.

SERVICING: OUTSOURCING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

W

hile current emissions legislation has little impact on generator servicing companies at present, as new, low emission engines saturate the market, the way maintenance is managed could drastically change.

Here, Pete Trueman, Service Delivery Manager at DiPerk, the UK and Ireland’s Perkins engines expert, explains how new partnerships will form in light of changing emissions legislations.

The medium combustion plant directive (MCPD) is a means of improving air quality, by reducing SO2, NOx, CO and particulate emissions from plant combustion equipment.

Initially only applying to new plants, it will apply to existing plants greater than 5 MWth from 2024 and existing plants between 1 and 5 MWth from 2029.

As well as purchasing new, compliant equipment, plant operators can add aftertreatment devices, such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, to reduce emissions from existing equipment.

While aftertreatment is effective at reducing emissions, it significantly increases the complexity of the engine. For generator servicing companies that work across the full spectrum of engine manufacturers, this could mean a huge volume of new maintenance tasks.

Because new engine technology is also increasingly digital, diagnostics is also becoming more of a plug and play exercise. Servicing companies will therefore require access to specialist software to diagnose and fix some of the potential faults.

There would be significant up front and ongoing costs in training, cabling, equipment and software to be able to address every possible fault, on every engine, from every manufacturer.

Making this investment is also unlikely to pay off there may be very few incidences where the knowledge and equipment would be applied per year.

A lack of specific knowledge on new emissions compliant engines could lead to extensive downtime for the customer, which is particularly painful if the equipment is providing a critical service.

But no company wants to say no to a customer in need, so how can generator servicing companies adapt their business models in line with changing engine technology?

The increasing complexity of engines is likely to lead to the blossoming of new partnerships between generator servicing companies and original equipment manufacturers (OEMS).

The beauty of these relationships will be that both parties have complementary skills.

Generator servicing companies can continue to address routine problems, such as issues with cabling, controls, and filters.

However, when called out to a site where the problem is with a connected or aftertreatment device, they can quickly call upon the OEM for assistance.

Rather than assessing the site, being unable to fix the fault and causing downtime, the generator servicing company can immediately pick up the phone and speak to the manufacturer.

As well as engine-specific insight, the OEM can provide access to plug and play software, reducing costs the generator servicing company.

The generator servicing company is still able to say yes to all potential customers, safe in the knowledge that they have access to specialist, manufacturer-specific skills should they be required.

As new, emissions compliant engines begin to hit the market, generator servicing companies can develop new partnerships that mean they’ll be able to continue to deliver high levels of service to all customers.

DO WE NEED FRESH LEADERSHIP POST-COVID FOR A NEW NORMAL? Results from Momentum’s Optimise Your Own Performance Programme 2020

The absence of leadership for the ‘new normal’ is not only a governmental vacuum, the same phenomenon also exists in a corporate environment.

During 30+ years of experience in more than 100 organisations, Momentum collated 100’s of client surveys which confirm that the organisational culture often causes businesses to perform at as little as 30% of their achievable output.

Based on a conservative Management salary of £45k and 1/3 of Managers working part time, the cost of cultural malaise would be approximately £19k per manager. Making a determined decision to transform the culture and build a more capable skill-set which would enable the recovered £19k per year to create a significant uplift to the bottom line of many organisations.

Even prior to Covid-19 many leadership teams could be seen prioritising discussion about the latest management information, theory and rhetoric to the detriment of asking the significant question “Where are we really trying to get to?”

Surely one of the places that most organisations are trying to get to would be an employee workforce in good mental condition but mental health problems at work cost the UK economy £34.9bn last year. This means that mental health problems cost £1,300 for every employee in the UK economy. By far the largest

part of the business cost is in the form of reduced productivity among people who are at work but unwell: or ‘presenteeism’.

This costs businesses twice as much as sickness absence relating to poor mental health. The remainder of the cost relates to turnover – people leaving their jobs as a result of poor mental health.

People often lack self-belief in their ability to deal with life’s incoming challenges or to achieve new standards.

Leaders in some organisations are already thinking more systemically and providing employees with mental fitness training with significant impact.

An organisation regardless of how small or large develops a microsociety of its own. If exceptional leadership can be developed within an organisation it will sow the seeds to a better quality of life for our wider society.

A positive societal impact will be experienced if leaders expand their systemic thinking to make the connection between individual mental health, individual organisational culture and the wider national status quo.

If we can build organisations in which people demonstrate contribution-orientated mindsets and embrace inclusion and diversity, these mind-sets will contribute to easing our societal inflammation.

AMPS MEMBERS DO A POWER OF GOOD We’ve recently been through some challenging times with many businesses closing down or furloughing some or all of their employees. However, many AMPS members have continued to work through the crisis providing standby power whenever needed. Other members have made contributions of food and materials to hospitals or vulnerable people or have redirected their skills to producing PPE and other lifesaving equipment. Here are a few actions that caught our eye.

EG imported 101 infusion pumps and four laryngoscope videos to donate to regional hospitals to help in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic The first 30 infusion pumps arrived at WEG, to be delivered to Hospital Jaraguá, WEG headquarters city in Brazil, to equip the 20 new ICU´s being assembled at the hospital.

In addition to the infusion pumps, WEG donated resources for the repair of 15 pulmonary ventilators which were out of use, 200,000 surgical masks and R$800,000 between several hospitals as well as a further 30,000 surgical masks to be used in health care centres.

WEG continues to produce alcohol gel to donate to hospitals and is in the process of starting the production of 500 pulmonary ventilators to be used in the ICU´s of hospitals by patients recovering from the disease.

“The society needs everyone’s participation at this moment to minimize transmission of the virus and in getting prepared to support those people who need it,” says Company’s HR and Corporate Affairs Director, Hilton José da Veiga Faria.

AGGREKO OFFERS UK GOVERNMENT UP TO 1,300 GENERATORS TO PROVIDE POWER TO COVID-19 TEMPORARY TESTING SITES Aggreko has offered the UK government up to 1,300 small generator units pro-bono to support the set-up of COVID-19 testing sites across the UK. In response to the growing demand, temporary testing sites have been stationed across the country – these include sites such as major retailer carparks through to unused theme park facilities.

As the number of temporary testing sites increases, so too does the need for access to reliable, modular power, particularly as many of these sites will not have easy connections to mains electricity.

Aggreko, which is headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland, offered the UK government the use of its available fleet of small canopy generators - up to 1,300 units to provide flexible, modular power to temporary venues.

As with most of Aggreko’s products, these generators can be remotely monitored without the need for an engineer to be physically present.

This design feature is advantageous during this time of social distancing, as it will help limit the number of people physically present at designated testing sites.

Chris Rason, Managing Director at Aggreko Northern Europe, said: “Aggreko is ready to help the COVID-19 relief effort in any way that we can, and we are already supporting the healthcare, pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries.

JCB LENDS A HAND AS ROYAL STOKE HOSPITAL APPEALS FOR GLOVES JCB answered a call from the University Hospitals of North Midlands for donations of vital supplies of personal protective equipment during the current Coronavirus crisis.

More than 8,000 pairs of gloves and a large quantity of face masks were gifted to the hospital as it geared up for an influx of patients.

They were donated by the JCB World Parts Centre at Uttoxeter, which continues to provide service, technical and spare parts back up to customers including farmers maintaining the food supply chain, contractors providing JCB generators to NHS hospitals and hirers keeping crucial utility services intact.

MAKING THE BEST OF A BAD SITUATION TO FEED HUNGRY KIDS At Cummins’ Daventry Engine Plant the facility and canteen partnered with a not-for-profit group to deliver prepared lunches to vulnerable children.

During the COVID-19 emergency the canteen began selling basic groceries to Cummins employees at cost, including pasta, eggs, bread and milk. The plant’s Community Involvement Team also reached out to local schools providing lunches to vulnerable children.

Working with a local charity who focussed on demand and distribution, the canteen staff took on food production, producing 300 packed lunches per day, which the charity delivers to local schools and sometimes directly to the homes of the children.

WE ARE READY TO PROVIDE 40,000 GREEN-COLLAR JOBS IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS, SAYS ENERGY INDUSTRY The Association for Decentralised Energy welcomes the announcement made on July 8th by the Chancellor.

His annoucnement backs a green recovery, which should support thousands of jobs, reduce energy bills and make homes healthier and lower carbon.

The announcement included the following moves to be implemented: * A total of £3bn to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. * £2bn Grant scheme for domestic energy efficiency measures, such as insulation, with Government expected to cover at least 2/3rds of the cost through a voucher scheme. * Scheme to be finalised and launched in September and spent over one year, with half allocated for poorest households. * £1bn earmarked for the improvement of public sector buildings.

Caroline Bragg, Head of Policy at the ADE said: “Our members- energy businesses up and down the country- are delighted that the Government has today kickstarted a national buildings renovation programme.

“This will allow industry to get started providing good, green-collar jobs right away; if designed right, this support could employ close to 40,000 in the next two years.

“These green-collar jobs and apprenticeships will provide high-quality improvements to people’s homes, making them healthier, more comfortable and greener.

The energy efficiency sector is covered by established consumer protection and quality assurance schemes.”

The Construction Talent Retention Scheme will be an online portal that supports redeployment of staff at risk of redundancy across the sector, while also enabling temporary employee loans between businesses.

The Scheme give displaced workers from other sectors a route to find new employment in construction.

Baumüller and Solutions 4 Energy are developing small wind turbines with efficient generators. Indeed, the key evolution of the small wind turbine 30K16 began at the end of 2014.

Solutions 4 Energy put the focus on three requirements: no oil in the system which ensures minimum maintenance effort, the highest possible level of efficiency and the same safety standards as with large wind turbines. The partner’s role in developing a suitable generator, which makes it possible to meet these requirements, was taken over by the Nuremberg-based drive and automatization specialist Baumüller.

The result is a turbine that, with an innovative concept for generator cooling and a new technology in the rotor blade area, offers a high yield, low maintenance cycles and high level of flexibility.

About 25 average 4 - person housholds which each consumed about 4,000 kWh of electricity in Germany in 2017 can be supplied with the turbine’s energy yield.

The small wind turbine can be connected to the grid for infeed or can be used for the decentralized energy supply for self-supply. The system is available in black start-capable design, i.e. it can be used without a grid connection, which is an important aspect for use in remote areas, such as in Africa or South America.

Currently, Solutions 4 Energy is working on a concept for electricity storage and other versions of island grid operation so that a permanently reliable energy supply is possible without bridging times with low wind by using diesel generator, for example.

A development of the popular Fluke 87V, the 87V MAX is ideal for use in harsh environments with an IP 67 (waterproof and dustproof) rating, an extended operating temperature range of -15°C to +55°C (-40°C for up to 20 minutes) and up to 95% humidity, and has been designed and tested to withstand a 4m drop in its removable holster. It offers CAT III 1000V, CAT IV 600V safety ratings.

The Fluke 87V MAX will measure up to 1000V AC/DC and up to 10A AC/DC (20A for 30 seconds), with true-rms AC voltage and current readings for accurate measurements on non-linear signals.

It also offers a capacitance range of 10,000μF, measures frequency to 200kHz, and can capture Min/Max/Average recordings, plus 150μs Peak min-max to capture variations automatically. www.fluke.com 40
