The diesel gensets market size surpassed US$14 billion in 2019 and the number of genset installed every year is projected to exceed two million units by 2026, according to a new market report issued by the website gminsights.com.

Rising demand for reliable power supply accompanied by surge in the installation of backup supply devices is set to stimulate the product adoption, suggests the new research. “These systems have achieved the strategic importance to focus on the unavoidable power shortages amongst several other alternate backup sources,” say the researchers.

Business prospects have improved - in part - by the increasing number of power outages due to extreme weather conditions.

Forinstance, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Hurricane Michael caused major power outages in 2018 affecting over 1.7 million customers across six U.S. states. IN BRIEF AGGREKO FACES £2 BILLION TAKEOVER BID FROM PRIVATE EQUITY Aggreko is in discussions with private equity firms TDR Capital and I Squared Capital over a possible sale.

The companies have made a cash offer in the region of £2 billion.

UK-based TDR Capital is wellestablished in the equipment rental sector through its long involvement with portable accommodation specialist Modulaire (previously Algeco) and WillScot in North America.

Miami-based I Squared Capital invests in global infrastructure markets, including hydoelectric projects, water treatment, roads and energy. Aggreko has confirmed the discussions in response to press speculation and share price movements.

NEW GENSET MANUFACTURING FACILITY BEING DEVELOPED IN SOUTH CAROLINA, USA, BY GENERAC Generac Power Systems has saiid it will build a new manufacturing, assembly, and distribution operation in Trenton, South Carolina, USA. The facility will support increased demand for home standby generators and associated energy technologies and serve as a distribution centre for customers in the southeast sector of the US. The new initiative will generate approximately 450 new jobs over the next two years.

Aaron Jagdfeld, President and CEO of Generac Power Systems, Inc. told WIP: “With significant demand for Generac products across the country, we’re excited to expand our operational capacity to accommodate the increased interest in residential power systems.

The Trenton facility is strategically located closer to our customers in the southern part of the country and has access to a local laboUr force capable of helping us meet growing demand while strengthening our market-leading position.”

The expansion of the company’s manufacturing and distribution capacity begins with the acquisition and upgrade of a 421,000 sq.-foot manufacturing, distribution and office facility located at 30 Industrial Park Boulevard in Trenton, located between Charleston and Columbia, S.C., Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta. The site is expected to be operational by late 2021 and has the capacity to expand further as required.

€150 MILLION PRICE TAG ON BERGEN ENGINES FOR TMH INTERNATIONAL TMH International, the international branch of Russia’s TMH Group, has agreed to pay € 150m for the Bergen Engines medium-speed gas and diesel engines business belonging to Rolls-Royce.

The deal reflects Rolls-Royce’s target of raising at least £2 billion from disposals and Bergen Engines will be operated as a stand-alone business by TMH International.

The sale includes the medium speed engine factory, service workshop and foundry in Norway; engine and power plant design capability and a global service network spanning more than seven countries.

Since 1946, Bergen Engines has supplied more than 7,000 engines to marine and power generation customers worldwide, of which around 4,000 are still in operation.

Bergen Engines’ most recent contract has involved the delivery of 15 medium speed gas gensets from Rolls-Royce’s Bergen Engines brand to power the Iron Bridge Magnetite Project in Western Australia.

IN BRIEF YINGLI DELIVERS 117MW OF ITS N-TYPE BIFACIAL MODULES Yingli Energy (China) Company Ltd has supplied 117MW of its N-type bifacial high-efficiency modules “PANDA” to the Middle East’s largest bifacial PV power station in Oman, the Ibri-2 project.

The project financed and developed

by ACWA Power and POWERCHINA Huadong Engineering Corporation Limited was contracted as the EPC of the project. The electricity generated by the project will be purchased by the Oman Power Company (OPWP).

With a total installed capacity of 575 MW, the Ibri-2 project will be the largest PV power station to use bifacial modules in the Middle East. Yingli started the R&D and production of its “Panda” N-type high-efficiency bifacial cells and modules in 2009.

US MILITARY IS LOOKING AT NEW GENERATION OF SMALL GENERATORS FOR FORCES IN FIELD OPERATIONS LiquidPiston, Inc., a Connecticut-based developer of advanced rotary diesel and multifuel internal combustion engines, has been given a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with the United States Army to develop its X-Engine platform in order to power Small Tactical Power Generators ranging from 2.0 to 5 kW. The company had previously delivered a prototype Compact Artillery Power System for field-testing to the U.S. Army PM for Towed Artillery Systems. The Small Tactical Power Generators operate on military fuels such as JP8 or diesel. The system’s advanced power management and controls enable optimal X-Engine run-time and battery charging, resulting in longer life and increased fuel efficiency for longer military missions.

LiquidPiston’s rotary engines are said to be the first radical design in engine technology in over a century. These engines are not Wankel engines, claims LiquidPiston; they are uniquely configured to adopt the company’s patented thermodynamic cycle and its associated efficiency and low-noise benefits. LiquidPiston’s X Engine improves virtually all parameters – efficiency, weight, size, vibration, and noise, says the company.

LiquidPiston’s HEHC is a patented thermodynamic cycle that combines the advantages of Diesel, Otto and Atkinson thermodynamic cycles, resulting in up to 30% improved efficiency.

A company spokesman told WIP: “A simple, efficient and elegant system, the X Engine only has few moving parts, including the rotor (the primary work-producing component) and an eccentric shaft. Aside from ancillary parts such as injectors, fuel pumps and oil pumps, there are no other additional moving parts. The combustion chamber in the X engine is located in the stationary housing, with most of the gas displaced during compression into this stationary combustion chamber. “

POWERCELL RECEIVES SECOND ORDER FOR ADVANCED FUEL CELL SYSTEM

EMSA GENERATORS SHIPS GENSETS TO CENTRAL ASIA AND TO IRAQ

Swedish hydrogen fuel cell technology developer PowerCell Sweden AB has received an order for an MS-100 fuel cell system from the University of Texas, in the United States. The system will be part of a fuel cell-based solution for stationary power developed jointly with Hitachi ABB Power Grids.

The system will be delivered by mid-2021. The fuel cell-based solution will be used at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC), the University of Texas to demonstrate how renewable hydrogen can be used to decarbonize energy consumption.

PowerCell Sweden AB has also received another order for a MS-100 fuel cell system from a leading European construction equipment manufacturer. The system is expected to be delivered by the end of the first half of 2021.

The customer will use the system for tests of how fuel cells and hydrogen can be used for an electrification of equipment.

“Various types of construction equipment almost always run on diesel and therefore account for large emissions of carbon dioxide and harmful substances such as soot and nitrogen oxides. An electrification based on fuel cells and hydrogen is a highly attractive alternative for these types of vehicles as it offers the same driveability and uptime as conventional drivetrains with no other emissions than water,” commented Andreas Bodén,

EMSA Generator of Turkey has just shipped three 1650kVA gensets fitted with Baudouin engines and Cummins STAMFORD alternators to a major customer located in Central Asia.

These were recently despatched by air cargo for an urgent project. In a separate contract on December 21st, EMSA Generator shipped 2020, 165, 300, 825, 1125 and 1250 kVA diesel generator sets, powered by Perkins engines, to Iraq for S.C.I.S (State Company For Iron And Steel) to help address the power needs of the steel manufacturing sector.

In February, 1125 kva and 1656 kva diesel generator sets (powered by Perkins) were shipped to Qatar to be used in Waddan Mall.

Emsa Generator moved to its new, environment-friendly, state-of-the-art factory located in Eskişehir Organized Industrial Zone in Turkey in 2015. The company made this move in order to meet the demands

of a growing regional generator market.

A spokesman commented: “All production activities are carried out here in accordance with TSE and ISO criteria as well as environmental and occupational health laws and principles.

“Emsa Generator places particular importance on R&D and continues to invest in this field. In our new production facilities, productivity has increased with the new test rooms and conveyor system, and the entire system is monitored by barcode system. IN BRIEF NAEPO CHP PLANT ORDERS GE EQUIPMENT Naepo Green Energy’s new district heating and power plant located in the centre of Naepo City, South Korea,willbe fitted with equipment proviced by GE. Under the tersm of a new contract GE will supply a gas turbine - the 7HA.02 with a matching H65 generator.

The order includes a STF-D650 steam turbine, an H35 generator, an HRSG, a GE condenser and equipment maintenance services for 19 years.

The plant will be rated at approximately 500 MWe and will provide steam for district heating to more than 100,000 people.

Dongsoo Kim, EVP of NPGE reports: “Using GE technology for this district heating application will help us meet the government’s objective of shifting away from solid refuse fuel as part of its policy to reduce pollutants.”

Built by Lotte Engineering, the facility will benefit from the HA technology capable of reaching close to 64% efficiency in combined cycle, and more than 91% in district heating mode.

THOR’S HAMMER IN NETWORK PROTECTION FOR UK SP Energy Networks has paid £386 000 to carry out extensive UK trials of Groundline’s new ‘THOR Hammer’ resilience technology.

As part of preparing the network for stormy weather, the device will be used to test the strength and security of overhead line poles. It is designed help linesmen safely assess timber poles simply by striking them with a special ‘hammer’.

ANSALDO WINS CONTRACT TO SUPPLY TURBINES & SYSTEMS TO GRUPPO ARVADI Ansaldo Energia has been awarded a contract by Gruppo Arvedi for the supply and refurbishment of a new combined cycle plant in Servola, Trieste, Italy. The plant will include an AE64.3A gas turbine, equipped with high efficiency, operational flexibility and low emissions technology. The scope of supply includes an Ansaldo Energia Plant Optimiser management system.

The plant, in combined-cycle configuration with a rating of 120 MW, will be operational by the end of 2021. Gruppo Arvedi is a significant European steel company, and with this investment will be entering the Italian electricity capacity market.

The capacity market, in line with the situation in other European countries, aims to ensure the adequacy and safety of the national electricity system in the presence of a strong renewable component by encouraging investments in efficient, low-polluting and flexible plants.

According to the company, the AE64.3A model offers F-Class efficiency and high flexibility with a small size package suitable to several applications in power generation and cogeneration plants ​​ The AE64.3A offers the same high standard of reliability in a small size and compact package. The combination of an annular combustion chamber with rotor construction and internally air-cooled hot gas path & uniform temperature distribution, ensure optimum balancing of the thermal flow. This results in easy operation, fast start up / hot restart time and grid support capability.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ The equipment offers easy management of all transient conditions and a reliable fuel change over. A wide selection of fuels, ranging from lower BTU natural gas to liquid fuel, are burnt in dry premix mode with no water consumption, thus minimising the plant and operating cost and the layout area. Fast start up time and grid support capability make the A ​ E64.3A also suitable or peak plant application when grid conditions are severe.

POWER OUTAGES AFTER JAPAN IS HIT BY SEVERE 7.3 FUKUSHIMA QUAKE On 13th February 2021 a severe 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Tohoku, Japan, This quake hit just under a month before the 10th anniversary of the March 2011 tremors, tsunami and nuclear disaster.

No tsunami warnings were issued for the earthquake, which is the strongest to hit the region since 7th April 2011, says Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

Power outages were reported in parts of Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate, and Tochigi prefectures after six coal and gas-fired units were knocked out, taking 3.6GW of power offline.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) website reportsthat that a minor overflow of water occurred at a pool used to store atomic fuel at the Fukushima power plants however, no uncontrolled levels of radiation were detected.

IN BRIEF BATTERY RESEARCH TEAM GRANTED $3.5 MILLION FROM US ARMY RESEARCH LAB Montana State University Researchers are working to create more robust, fast-charging ceramic-based, lithium-ion batteries thanks to investment from the Army Research Lab. The research teams are involved in the development and testing of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) which use a unique ceramic material to substitute the plastic membrane and liquid electrolyte (LE) which are susceptible to damage and fire. The development of this technology is part of a $10 million initiative with universities, national labs, and leading industry players combining their efforts to push it forward. Recently, MSU was awarded $3.5 million to develop its battery material research.

NEW WASTE HEAT-TO-POWER PLANT TO BE BUILT BY SIEMENS ENERGY IN CANADA IN 2021 Canada’s TC Energy Corp. has commissioned Siemens Energy to build, own and operate a waste heatto-power pilot plant in Alberta.

The unit will capture waste heat from a gas-fired turbine operating at a nearly pipeline compression station. The heat will generate electricity going into the grid and power as many as 10,000 homes in the area.

Arja Talakar, Senior Vice President, I ndustrial Applications Products for Siemens Energy, commented: “This pilot project is a testament not only to our extensive capabilities but also to Siemens Energy’s broader commitment to

bring new technologies to market that can support decarbonization in the oil and gas industry. We are proud to partner with TC Energy to build this first-of-its-kind facility and look forward to scaling the technology to other installations in the coming years.”

The process is based on advancing Rankine Cycle tech and uses superficial carbon dioxide as the working fluid to convert the waste heat into power.

Because of its properties, sCO2 can interact more directly with the heat source than water/steam, eliminating the need for a secondary thermal loop, typically required in traditional waste heat recovery systems, according to Siemens Energy.

Siemens reports that the method uses electrical power without additional carbon emissions and improves other efficiencies.

Benefits include a 25 to 40% smaller footprint than steam-based systems, a 10% increase in compressor station efficiency, and the capability to produce clean, emissions-free electricity, says Siemens Energy.

Because the working fluid is contained within a closed-loop system, no boiler operator is required, making the system suitable for remote operation.

IN BRIEF EIB BACKS CCGT PLANT FOR GREECE The European Investment Bank (EIB) has pledged €125 million of financial support for the construction of an 826 MW gas fired power plant in Greece.

Mytilineos is building the €322 million Agios Nikolaos combined cycle (CCGT) facility in Viotia, central Greece, which will be key to boosting energy security and supporting the country’s aim to close its coal fired power plants by 2023.

The Agios Nikolaos plant will also provide flexibility to allow greater use of intermittent wind and solar power in the future and enable increased electricity network interconnection between mainland Greece and the islands.

The new plant will be the most efficient gas power plant in Greece and use state of the art CCGT technology. The new investment by Mytilineos will also help to diversify power generation in Greece and increase competition in the energy sector. The EIB will provide a €125 million 8 year loan to finance construction and connection of the plant. The loan is guaranteed by the European Union under the Investment Plan for Europe.

UK’S FIRST BATTERY GIGAFACTORY TO BE BUILT BY EV BATTERY STARTUP COMPANY - BRITISHVOLT EV battery startup Britishvolt has plans to construct a £2.6 billion lithium-ion battery gigafactory in northeast England, looking at being ready to begin manufacturing by the end of 2023.

Covering 235 acres and built on the same land as the Blyth Power Station in Northumberland, once complete the facility will be capable of producing more than 300,000 lithium-ion batteries. The project is the most significant industrial investment in the region since 1984, when Nissan built a major car manufacturing plant in Sunderland.

Once the plant’s construction is finished Britishvolt says it will be producing 300,000 lithium-ion battery packs each year, Blyth Valley MP, Ian Levy, said: “This is an incredibly exciting announcement that will have a massive impact in the constituency and the surrounding area for decades to come. I can’t think of anything comparable in the North East since Nissan invested in Sunderland more than 35 years ago.

“There is still much to do – but the prospect of the UK’s first Gigafactory on the old Blyth Power Station site directly creating up to 8,000 jobs is amazing. These jobs will not only return the area to the status of an industrial powerhouse but will help us retain our graduates and provide a huge boost to struggling high streets.

“I look forward to working with all involved and will provide the backing necessary to deliver a scheme that is a once in a generation opportunity.”

in 2020 KOHLER extended its gaseous-powered industrial generator lineup featuring the company’s 6.2-litre V8 turbocharged engine with new models at 100kW and 125kW. The KG100 and KG125 feature gas powered generator turbocharged engines have been optimised for applications and integrate durable aluminum cylinder heads with heavy-duty valves and valve seats.

The launch of these new generators has meant that KOHLER currently offers fully integrated gas powered generator models ranging between 40kW and 125kW all powered by KOHLER engines.

These generators provide users with the flexibility to select the appropriate gas fuel source for a specific application - natural gas, LP, or patent-pending dual fuel - and are suited to a variety of settings, such as commercial and municipal buildings, educational facilities, apartment complexes, health clinics, and nursing homes.

Diesel industrial generators In late 2016, KOHLER unveiled an entirely new range of large diesel industrial generators up to 2500kW (60Hz) / 2800kVA (50Hz) powered by a newly designed platform of KOHLER diesel engines represented by the K135 and K175 engine families.

The range was subsequently extended to 3250kW (60Hz) / 3500kVA (50Hz) in 2018. KOHLER has since expanded the top end of the KD Series with the rollout of new 3500kW and 4000kW models.

KEY EXPANSION TO THE AURA SERIES WITH A NEW HIGH-PERFORMANCE CHP MODULE

G has expanded the aura model series to include a power range of 100– 420 kWel with low NOX emissions based on Lambda-1 technology.

Three years after the launch of the particularly low-emission aura series with CHP modules with 100 or 170 kW electrical output, 2G is expanding the series to include two highperformance natural gas modules which are also based on the company‘s own Lambda-1 technology (λ = 1).

2G is therefore expanding its product portfolio for those customer applications where a high thermal power, low operating costs – also by means of eliminating exhaust treatment – and compact design, are essential.

The new aura 408 EG and aura 412 EG modules, with an output of 280 kWel/ 408 kWth and 420 kWel/611 kWth respectively, are unique in the market in terms of efficiency, performance and lifecycle costs for particularly low-emission CHP systems. Without a lean combustion concept or SCR catalyst (selective catalytic reduction), they achieve nitrogen-oxide values below 50 mg/Nm3 during operation.

This means that they fall far below the current limit value specifications of the 44th Federal Emmission Control Ordinance (BImSchV). These low values are made possible by the Lambda-1 technology, which is at the heart of the engine development at 2G. λ = 1 is the fuel ratio at which exactly the amount of air is present

that is theoretically required to completely burn the fuel.

The 408 module is based on a 4-stroke V engine with 8 cylinders, the module 412 on a V12 engine.

Both modules have a total efficiency of over 94% with a thermal Products and Applications efficiency of around 56%. With limited module complexity due to a single-stage charge air cooler, the combustion air is weakly charged using a turbocharger.

Since no SCR catalyst is used, the lifecycle costs of all aura modules are reduced by eliminating the need to inject a urea solution.

For Frank Grewe, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the fundamental motivation for the new development stemmed from the requirements of international markets: Originally, conurbations such as Tokyo, London or California, with their high demands on low nitrogen oxide limit values, provided the impetus for our development work at 2G. In light of the extremely low NOX emissions of the aura modules, any potential tightening of the limit values in Germany to 100 mg/ Nm3 for all engine concepts are generally not a problem for our customers. We are

thus creating security for the future for our domestic customers.”

Back when the aura series was introduced in 2017, in addition to the reduction in emissions, the increase in power was also an important aspect in the development goal.

Grewe summarises: “Regarding the power output, we can offer a 15% specific increase in performance with the aura 404 and 406 with the same engine displacement compared with the competition.

“And the aura 404 module, for example, achieves a total efficiency of 102% with regard to the heating value. This is the result of an electrical efficiency of 37% and a thermal efficiency of 65%, which is made possible by a fuel value exhaust gas heat exchanger.”

In addition to reducing nitrogen oxide emissions while improving power output, reducing the total cost of ownership was also at the top of the agenda when developing the new modules. Grewe also highlights that the aura 408 with 8 cylinders offers a much lower consumption than common 12-cylinder power units through better efficiency values for thermal and electrical power. www.2-g.com

T

he Regenerative Energies department of Gebrüder Nooren GbR has purchased eight containerized MWM biogas cogeneration power plants, doubling the installed electrical output of its existing biogas plants..

Gebrüder Nooren GbR is a medium-sized agricultural business in Germany’s federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. Apart from crop farming and animal husbandry, the company’s business fields also include the production of biogas.

Biogas plants are run to utilise animal waste in a climate-friendly way.

From late 2018 to April 2020, eight locations were furnished with new containerised MWM cogeneration power plants.

“Upgrading our cogeneration power plant locations with MWM TCG 3016 V12 and V16 containers was quite a huge project. Within about two years, we more than doubled our installed electrical output from 5.2 MW to 10.8 MW,”, says Tobias Jäsch, Project Manager Biogas at Nooren Bioenergie Verwaltungs GmbH, the company responsible for the rollout and coordination of the extension.

The new MWM TCG 3016 gensets in the ready-to-use containerised cogeneration power plants are designed to facilitate the buffering of peak loads by flex operation.

The existing cogeneration power plants, most of which are powered by MWM engines of the last generation, serve the generation of the base load.

“In view of the good experiences we had gained with MWM engines, we did not hesitate to decide in favor of the MWM TCG 3016 gensets with their high availability,” says Jäsch “As with every entirely new system, a number of minor glitches were encountered at the first location, but were resolved speedily”, he reports.

“Starting from the second location and engine, everything worked out smoothly, and this has not changed so

far. To date, we have not experienced any serious outages or malfunctions of any of the new containerised cogeneration power plants, and we are still impressed by the reliability and high availability of the TCG 3016 gensets.”

Following an in-depth examination, the Nooren Group opted for the MWM biogas containers.

The advantage of these systems is that all components are fine-tuned to the requirements of biogas operation.

Besides the standard MWM container with its genset, peripherals, and control panel, the package includes a special gas treatment system.

“For us, the solution with the MWM biogas containers was the most efficient way to double the output of our existing cogeneration power plants and equip them for flex operation,” Jäsch points out.

Mega Project: Eight Biogas Plants Expanded in Less Than Two Years The power produced from biogas at the eight locations is fed into the public grid. The heat from the power production is used on site, e.g. to heat the pigsties, production buildings, offices, and recycling facilities. The substrate required for the production of biogas consists of liquid manure, corn, and other energy plants, most of which are supplied by the company’s own operations.

SPECIAL EMERGENCY STANDBY GENSETS FOR THE NEW J&T BANK

T

wo special emergency standby generators operating as independent sources of electric energy were recently supplied by Visa SpA through its official Distributor who has expertise in in special projects and complex application, supporting the systems of special emergency standby generators of the important J&T bank group in Karlín, an area which is experiencing rapid growth in Prague, Czech Republic.

The J&T bank group needed new generators for its offices in the new J&T Bank Building, an eight-storey structure which the company occupies exclusively.

J&T chose Onis Visa products to carry out the task, since it had the resources to offer a total engineering solution.

Visa SpA provided two P 600 GX generators, P.R.P power kVA 600, L.T.P. power kVA 660, each powered by Perkins engine 2806C-E18TAG1A, coupled with STAMFORD® model HCI5E alternators, suitable for supplying versatile, reliable power in primary and standby installations.

The two generating sets are equipped with an In-Sync automatic control panel which is used for the parallel management of the gensets. This supports the protocols which cover all the requirements of power supply in case the electric grid fails.

The baseframe acts as watertight basin in case of any leaking liquid from the machine. The baseframeintegrated fuel tanks of 950 Lt capacity give the gensets a long time operation.

The two gensets are from the Galaxy soundproof range and feature advanced technology in terms of compact design and a high level of noise reduction.

The Perkins® 2800 Series is a family of well-proven 6-cylinder, 18-litre inline diesel engines, designed to address uncompromising demands within the power generation industry, with particular applications in the standby market sector.

Developed from a proven heavyduty industrial base, the engine offers superior performance and reliability, says Perkins.

The 2806C-E18TAG1A is a turbocharged and air-to-air charge cooled diesel engine which has been designed to provide economic and durable operation, low gaseous emissions and advanced overall performance and reliability.

Although the Perkins 2800 range of diesel engines caters for both prime and standby generation, the engines are particularly popular with users seeking a relaible standby genset.

The engines can deliver 532-678 kWm engine power and a 591-750 kVA generator output.

This is thanks to mechanically operated unit fuel injectors, electronic control and carefully matched turbocharging technology.

The STAMFORD® model HCI5E alternators used in the genset meet the requirements of BS EN 60034 and the relevant section of other international standards such as BS5000, VDE 0530, NEMA MG1-32, IEC34, CSA C22.2-100, AS1359.

Thanks to the STAMFORD® AS440 AVR this self-excited system the main stator provides power via the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) to the exciter stator.

The high efficiency semiconductors of the AVR ensure positive build-up from initial low levels of residual voltage.

The exciter rotor output is fed to the main rotor through a three-phase full-wave bridge rectifier. The rectifier is protected by a surge suppressor against surges caused, for example, by short circuit or outof-phase paralleling.

The AS440 will support a range of electronic accessories, including a ‘droop’ Current Transformer (CT) to permit parallel operation with other ac generators.

The alternator also has an MX341 AVR, a sophisticated AVR incorporated into the PMG control system.

new chapter opens for ComAp’s single-genset controllers portfolio with the announcement of the new generation of InteliLite controllers – InteliLite 4.

This new platform builds on the success of its predecessors with the market-proven design and brings current trends to it: fully remote communication, high focus on cybersecurity, configurable U/I/R analogue inputs, drag and drop PLC or easier communication interfaces with RS485 onboard.

The InteliLite 4 controllers can communicate remotely via ComAp´s plug-in module system. The range is also compatible with the latest version of WebSupervisor that allows users to manage and monitor ComAp controllers (and third part devices) online.

WebSupervisor runs securely on Microsoft Azure network servers, and coupled with the security features of AirGate 2.0, ComAp users can rest assured their generators are safe.

A main focus with InteliLite 4 is security. It was designed with respect to ISA62443. The security on the InteliLite’s communications cards has been improved with connection via the new AirGate 2.0 connection protocol.

Locally, the controller features multi-user password-protected accounts, as well as extensive history and change logs to ensure accurate reporting and employee access logging.

Administrators can allocate levels of access to users, with varying levels of password-protected access available for different users on the same controller.

There are two InteliLite 4 ranges available: Standard and Advanced. Both lines feature both Auto Mains Failure, (AMF) and Manual or Remote Start/Stop (MRS) modes, but the advanced models include features that high-level users will appreciate including USB host and RS 485, support for more extension plug-in cards, additional inputs and outputs and extra CAN extension modules.

Configuration of the InteliLite 4 controllers is even easier and more flexible now too – they are compatible with the latest version of InteliConfig software which allows remote control, monitoring and online adjustment of parameters. The InteliLite 4 range is set for launch from April 1st, 2021.

ComAp’s new product line, the InteliDrive 400, comes with two controllers InteliDrive 430 for simple applications and InteliDrive 480 for more complex applications.

They were specifically developed for the engine control market and in close collaboration with key customers to meet the features and benefits they most needed. One of its key features is customisability.

The controllers have been designed to be easily modified to suit any customer application; whether it be water pumping, hydraulic control, air, or gas compression.

Because an innovative new type of fascia was used on the controller, the front layout is completely customisable for the customer. If they require fewer buttons, more buttons, a different colour, their own branding, and more – it is all possible with the new range of InteliDrive controllers.

The 4.3 inch full colour display is also fully customisable with different gauges, instruments and graphs available to best suit the customer’s application.

The controllers have both vertical and horizontal mounting options available, to maximize flexibility in the field.

As well as the front being customisable, the hardware itself is customisable too, including an extensive ECU list and multi-language support. Connection to the InteliDrive controllers is available via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, USB, 4G/LTE or even 5G. The controller is also fully compatible with ComAp’s WebSupervisor and AirGate, so customers can monitor and maintain their equipment online or using our smartphone application. Importantly, a PC is no longer needed to program it – the InteliDrive 430 and 480 are both fully programable via the display and buttons; with the ability to import and

export the configuration via USB. The InteliDrive 430 and 480 will be available for sale from May 2021.

InteliSCADA replaces InteliMonitor for monitoring and management of ComAp controllers and accessories. It is PC software with a modern look and feel that has been developed with current web technologies, so the interface and overall user experience are much more intuitive. SCADA systems can be very complicated. They require a lot of programming knowledge and can take a lot of time to master even the basics. InteliSCADA makes this easy. It comes with pre-configured templates for different ComAp devices – users can just add devices/controllers and one-click is needed to get InteliSCADA programmed and started monitoring the site.

Users can add different monitoring instruments including start/ stop buttons, gauges, alarm lists, and even a video feed from a webconnected camera. Then, InteliSCADA automatically connects the particular instrument to a controller. Going through a long list of all possible options is not needed.

InteliSCADA brings security that meets industrial standards. What’s more, InteliSCADA has been tested extensively and went through a long validation process. So, it makes InteliSCADA is suitable for complex projects.

INSTALLING GENERATORS AT 22 BISHOPSGATE, LONDON

ells Power Solution, a company synonymous with delivering technical turnkey generator solutions within some of the UK’s most prestigious buildings, recently surpassed its own record by delivering a full generator solution - three FG Wilson 2500KVA 11KV generators to Level 43 at 110 Bishopsgate (formerly Heron Tower) and a further six FG Wilson 2250KVA 11KV generators to Level 57 of 22 Bishopsgate.

These are now the highest installed generators in the northern hemisphere.

Bells Power was contracted to the TClarke / Multiplex group who are responsible for constructing 22 Bishopsgate. This is now the tallest building in the City of London with the highest useable floor space in northern Europe.

The building is described as ‘a vertical village’ in the city of London - a state-of-the-art 62- storey skyscraper standing 288m tall.

Located within this glazed behemoth Bells Power is finalising the installation of FG Wilson generating sets on Level 57 of the tower some 260m above street level.

Since 2014, Bells Power/FG Wilson has been engaged with the senior design team of the project, working closely with WSP to develop the design from concept to the installed solution that it is today.

After entering into contract with T Clarke in 2015 the Bells Solution team has spent the last four years readying themselves for the day that the generators and associated equipment would be delivered to site.

The generators had to be lifted just under 300m above street level and dropped via the outlet attenuator penetration in the Level 58/59 slab onto the Level 57 generator room floor.

With over a hundred lifts of various shapes and sizes, the Bells Power Solution team positioned the equipment during a 6-week period across July and August 2019.

By using the complex Multiplex crane strategy for the site, Bells Power was able to the lift the generators in complete sections, meaning 16,000kgs being lifted from a lorry kerbside to the site up to the Generator room not once but six times.

The FG Wilson P2250-1E emission-optimised engines were selected specially for the project, to produce high quality power with low emission

output. The radiator package for the generator was also specially selected to ensure the lowest coupled airflow requirement for cooling as louvre space was limited.

When synchronised the generators collectively can deliver 13.5MVA of power at 11KV - which is enough power to supply a small town.

Located within the Basement at Level B3 Bells Power has installed 120,000 litres of bulk fuel storage; duplex pumps set rated for over 25 bar delivery have been installed to transfer the fuel up to a Level 41 Break Tank.

Another set of pumps delivers fuel to six of the 1,600 litre dura-steel encased day tanks to supply each set with three hours’ of run-time.

Over 300m of fill and dump line has been installed for the fuel system from basement B3 to level 57. Bells Power Solution installation team put this in using Brugg FSR/Secon-X pipework in continuous runs within the building this negated the need for hot works and welding throughout the site.

On level 57 Bells Power Solution team installed a number of inlet attenuators throughout the floor to supply the six generators with over 200m³/s of cooling airflow, whilst limiting the noise breakout to the external to 65 db(A) @ 1m. via a vertical discharge plenum the

generator exhaust flue.

Discharge attenuators were installed passing through Level 58/59 to roof termination, these again were sized to achieve 65 dB(A) @ 1m and for good measure the exhaust gases can be quickly dispersed and diluted into atmosphere via the discharge air path.

High deflection anti-vibration mounts were used to provide a vertical undamped natural frequency of each generator to 1.71Hz, whilst providing vertical isolation efficiency of 99.5%.

All six generators synchronise together on a common HV switchboard.

Installation was completed Q4 2019, this was followed by an intense period of testing and commissioning including HV loadbank testing allowing full synchronising and integrated system testing ready for handover for Q4 2020.

Working together, the parties will be able to close a gap in the market by developing an engine that provides customers additional and exceptional value upon initial purchase while retaining the reliability, versatility, and performance they’ve come to expect from John Deere and DEUTZ engines.

BOOSTING POWER AT A REFINERY IN ITALY - 1 MW OF ADDITIONAL ENERGY

T

he Eni S.p.A. refinery in Venice, Italy is currently enjoying the benefits of MeeFog technology which offers the site a number of technical advantages.

Summer temperatures in Italy can soar. As hot air has a lower mass than colder air, this reduces the mass flow through the turbine and thus inhibits performance by as much as 10%.

By bringing inlet temperatures down by 10°C, a MeeFog system provided almost 1 MW of additional power to the turbine, while improving heat rate and lowering emissions.

Eni S.p.A. is an Italian multinational oil and gas company headquartered in Rome. It has operations in 79 countries, and is currently Italy’s largest industrial concern. Through its Refining & Marketing Division, ENI operates five refineries in Italy – Sannazzaro, Livorno, Venice, Taranto and Gela. Overall, ENI has a refining capacity of approximately 39.3 mmtonnes (equal to 787 kbbl/d).

The Venice site is considered the company’s model ‘Green Refinery’ which has been fully converted into a biorefinery using recycling and sustainability processes. This facility is located on the Adriatic coast just a few miles from the centre of Venice.

Installation Challenges As part of ENI’s commitment to reducing fuel consumption and emissions, the company adopted a 25MW GE MS5001 gas turbine for onsite power generation, thereby reducing dependency on Italy’s grid.

By selecting a gas-fired turbine, it avoided the high emissions levels associated with coal-fired generation.

In addition, ENI adopted a MeeFog system as well as a steam injection system for the gas turbine. Together, these approaches help to lower fuel consumption and curtail emissions.

The climate in Venice is regarded as subtropical. July and August

temperatures can sometimes reach close to 40°C and are frequently above 30°C for at least part of the day.

During these extremes gas turbine output can drop significantly. ENI, therefore, decided to use MeeFog for power augmentation at its Venice refinery.

How the system works The fogging system operates at 2000 psi and produces tiny fog droplets with an average size of 10 microns.

Each of the 210 fog nozzles provide a flow rate of 0.045 gpm. A stainless steel piping infrastructure feeds demineralized water to the fog system at a total flow rate of 9 gpm.

“We use demineralised water which is produced by our own demineralisation equipment and shared between our fog system and other areas of the refinery such as our boilers,” said Massimiliano Bettin, Downstream and Industrial Operations Manager at ENI’s Venice Refinery.

Seven stages of cooling provide the potential for up to 12°C of cooling.

This equates to 1.7°C of cooling per stage. This amount of cooling is only needed for short periods of the day.

“We keep the fog system in operation from May to October and shut it down the rest of the year,” said Bettin.

“We are reaching up to 9°C of cooling during dry summer days on average by using our MeeFog system.”

But the climate in Venice can get hot and sticky during some parts of the summer. So how does the MeeFog system cope with periods of high humidity?

“When Venice becomes very humid, we still achieve up to 5°C of cooling on average,” said Bettin. “The turbine benefits from MeeFog cooling up to 100 KW per degree Celsius.”

With the success of the Venice installation, ENI has since added a MeeFog system to its Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi Refinery in Northern Italy near Milan. www.meefog.com

NEW DIESEL ENGINE MODELS – THE 3TN86CHT AND THE 4TN86CHT

anmar has developed two new industrial engine models – the 3TN86CHT and the 4TN86CHT – which comply with EU Stage V and with U.S. EPA/CARB Tier 4 emission regulations.

The 3TN86CHT, is a three-cylinder 1.57 L model with a bore and stroke of 86 x 90 mm and rated output of 40.1 kW at 2600 rpm and a maximum torque of 197 Nm at 1690 r/min. It has a dry weight of 200 kg.

The 4TN86CHT is a four-cylinder 2.09 L engine with a bore and stroke of 86 x 90 and rated output of 55.4 kW at 2600 rpm. Maximum torque is 263 Nm at 1690 at 1690 rpm. Dry weight is 247kg.

Yanmar reports that to increase power output, a new turbocharger matching design has been implemented, along with higher strength in various engine parts. As a result, the company said, the 3TN86CHT and 4TN86CHT have 20% and 14% more power output, respectively, than the TNV models of the same displacement.

It added that the compact outline of the engine makes it easier for customers to install it in their work equipment. In addition, increasing the output of the exhaust gas after-treatment system without making it larger contributes to improved operator visibility and comfort.

The new engines are equipped with Yanmar’s proprietary Diesel Particulate Filter system for capturing particulate matter.

This system allows operation at high altitudes and at low temperatures and under all work conditions from light to heavy loads. In addition, the DPF cleaning has a 6,000-hour interval service.

The engines utilise a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to reduce Particulate Matter (PM) and a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce harmful emissions.

These technologies, which have been refined from Yanmar’s experience developing smaller engines, allow the new engines to comply with EU Stage V regulations.

Main advantages 1. High power density To increase power output, a new turbocharger matching design has been implemented, along with higher strength in various engine parts.

As a result, 3TN86CHT and 4TN86CHT have 20% and 14% more power output,

respectively, than TNV models of the same displacement with intercooled turbo in the current line-up.

2. Compact engine configuration The compact outline of the engine was designed in consideration of engine bay dimensions, making it easier for customers to install it on their work equipment.

NEW CONTRACT FOR 630MW POWER PLANT IN MUGLA, TURKEY

A

BB has signed a contract with Yatagan Termik Santrali Enerji Uretim A.S., one of the biggest independent power producers in Turkey.

ABB will provide critical integrated control, cyber security and automation technology for Yatagan Power Plant located at Mugla site, which produces 630MW of power to homes and businesses in the south-western part of the country.

The plant will deploy ABB’s automation technology in order to generate significant improvements in efficiency, greater flexibility around energy output and an ability to decrease outputs when demand decreases.

The modernisation project, which has begun, will see the comprehensive implementation of a new distributed control system (DCS), ABB Ability™ System 800xA for plant and turbine control.

DAN MCGRAIL TO STEP DOWN AS HEATNIC CHAIR Dan McGrail is to step down as the chair of the Heat Networks Industry Council (HeatNIC) following his decision to leave Siemens.

He is leaving to take up the role of chief executive officer of Renewable UK at the end of May 2021. Dan has been instrumental in the creation of the Heat Networks Industry Council, which launched in June 2020.

The HeatNIC is comprised of key stakeholders from across the heat networks sector, including heat network developers and operators, who are working closely with government and the public sector to realise the full potential of heat networks in the UK. Prior to his current role at the HeatNIC, Dan served as both chair of the ADE and on the non-executive board.

Thanking Dan for his work at both the ADE and HeatNIC, the ADE’s chief executive officer Ian Calvert said: “As chair of this important initiative, Dan has been pivotal over the last two years as in driving forward the Heat Network Industry Council, and he will be working with us over the next two months to fill the considerable gap he will leave in HeatNIC.” Dan will continue as HeatNIC chair until a replacement has been appointed.

Citizens Advice, The ADE and Energy UK release joint ‘risk register’ for energy flexibility Citizens Advice, Energy UK and the ADE have developed a risk register for domestic demand side response.

Demand Side Response (DSR) incentivises people to change the way they use energy based on price signals.

The register is part of a new report called Demanding attention: Managing risks today, looks at: * potential consumer risks * where they are covered by existing legislation * what work is currently being undertaken to address these risks in the future * where there is likely to be a protection gap in the future Recognising the need for positive outcomes for consumers, Citizens Advice, Energy UK and ADE have set out a series of different approaches to energy services to identify any gaps in protections.

ACE OUTLINES VISION FOR PROJECT SPEED The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) has launched a series of briefings exploring how Project Speed can improve delivery of hospitals, schools, homes and rail.

The output from four industry roundtables hosted by ACE in partnership with construction firms Laing O’Rourke, Mace and Reds10, as well as Network Rail and housebuilder Thakeham, the briefings explore how the industry can meet aspirations to deliver “faster, better and greener”.

Taking inspiration from the rapid delivery of NHS Nightingale hospitals, the briefings explore practical steps that need to be taken to unlock delivery. Case studies shared from across the UK demonstrate the tangible measures that can already be taken to make Project Speed a reality.

Common themes which emerge from the four briefings on rail, homes, hospitals and schools include: - Strengthening the evidence base and use of data in project development and decision making.

- The digitising of previously paper-based process such as planning consultations, assurance and approvals processes.

- Focusing projects on a new approach to value-based decision making beyond the purely financial.

Hannah Vickers, chief executive of ACE said: “I have no doubt that we have the vision, creativity, and problem solving skills to meet the Project Speed challenge head-on, which is why we brought the industry together for our roundtables.”

WHAT DID YOU DO FOR NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK IN 2021?

National Apprenticeship Week 2021 took place from 8th to 14th February 2021. The annual weeklong celebration of apprenticeships was established to shine a light on the amazing work being done by employers and apprentices across the country. The Week also recognised how employers of all sizes have stepped up to the challenge during this unprecedented time. Here, AMPS take a look at one example of a young professional taken on by Crestchic.

F

ollowing National Apprenticeship Week we’d like to highlight one of our previous AMPS award winners (Apprentice of the Year).

We’ve been catching up with Torrie Lunn, an apprentice Electrical Engineer with Crestchic, who is still working hard, gaining qualifications and building up experience in spite of Covid.

She’s moved on from rewiring small standard units to working on larger 600 and 1000kW units and most of the DC loadbanks.

We asked Torrie if she has been able to gain any new qualifications and what’s her experience of the last year?

She explains: “This will probably be different to any other normal year due to COVID, so interesting in itself.

At the moment, I have gained Level 1&2 Qualifications in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. I should have qualified for Level 3 at the end of March, but with COVID this may be delayed until summer. I intend to take Level 4 next year.”

- Are you still working in the same area (wiring load banks) or have you moved into other areas, or gained experience with other facets of the industry?

“In my first couple of years I was working on small standard units – 100 and 300kW loadbanks. I now usually work on larger units, 600 and 1000kW Units which are more challenging,” she says.

“Also, I work on most of the DC loadbanks. The next challenge for me will be to work upon some star/delta units. I like to try and help people and have become a mentor to new staff – both tradesmen who haven’t seen a loadbank before, and also new apprentices.”

- What are your ambitions and hopes for the future?

She says: “I love working at Crestchic and hope to be here for a long time. Some of the engineers that I work with have been overseas to work on loadbanks in places like Brazil, Dubai and Singapore.

“It sounds glamorous, but they assure me that on the sites we go to its not! I would like to work in other countries and see different cultures.

“However, I may need to balance this aspiration with future family life so perhaps progress through the ranks as a supervisor and then maybe a manager would be best for me,” she points out.

“I have seen other people at Crestchic promoted so I know that this is possible if I want it enough.”

- What are your thoughts about the power industry – do you see your role changing?

She replies: “I don’t think that my role as an Electrical Engineer will change much in the near future, but the company will probably have to change a lot as we move from traditional power supplies and into more renewable energy.”

- How is life as a women engineer in the power industry – still one of a few?

“I sometimes look at my old school friends’ profiles on Facebook and lots of them went into what would seem

For the first time this year, part of the main Dakar bivouac is to be powered by an innovative mobile energy production and storage system. This technology supplied by Socomec, partner of the main contractor GCK-Energy, is a first step towards a greener rally-raid.

The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), the company organising the Dakar rally, has taken a decisive step towards its goal of running a zero-carbon emission event. At ASO’s request, the GCK-Energy company has deployed a new mobile energy storage solution to supply green energy to the NEOM bivouac. This power supply will limit the use of generators using running on fossil fuels.

The technical solution implemented by GCK- Energy was designed

by Socomec. This involves the “SUNSYS Mobile” innovation, a new ultra- mobile electricity storage solution equipped with lithium-ion batteries supplied by another partner in the project, the IBS company.

This zero-emission, all-terrain system has been designed to be a responsible alternative or complement to the use of noisy and polluting generators. In the NEOM bivouac, the press centre, the TV wall and the participants’ reception were powered by solar energy produced and stored on site during the 3 days of activity.

Socomec’s teams have been working on the subject of mobile energy storage for several years. Ivan Steyert, CEO of Socomec explains: “Mobile electricity storage is a major innovation that we have been working on for many years through our partnership with IBS. “Following the success of the E’Car pilot project in 2019, we are now able to offer our customers a unique, industrialised solution for supplying temporary loads without carbon emissions. Socomec is very proud to put its expertise at the service of GCK Energy, which is committed to providing green power solutions, particularly in the context of tomorrow’s motor sport.”

In addition to temporary infrastructures such as the Dakar bivouac, the technology designed by Socomec is also adapted to the constraints inherent in motor sport. The GCK e-Blast 1, an electric rally-cross vehicle, is recharged with solar energy in the middle of the desert thanks to the technological support of Socomec and IBS, the designer of the vehicle’s batteries. POWER ELECTRICS MEETS STAGE V Power Electrics has announced its Ultragen range – a generator designed to meet the ultra-low emissions targets of EU’s Stage V. Stage V is an exhaust emissions standard for the Non-Road Mobile Machinery legislation (NRMM).
