Earlier this month NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter recharged the batteries in its power system and sent a status report, just one one week into its near seven-month journey to Mars with the Perseverance rover. This marks the first time the helicopter has been powered up and its batteries have been charged in an off-Earth environment.

The performance of the rotorcraft’s six lithium-ion batteries was analyzed during the eight-hour operation as the team brought the charge level up to 35%. The project found a low charge state is optimal for battery health during the mission to Mars.

Tim Canham, the operations leader for Mars Helicopter at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in SIX LITHIUM-ION Southern California, commented: “This was a big milestone, as it was BATTERIES WERE our first opportunity to turn on Ingenuity and give its electronics a ‘test drive’ since we launched on July RECHARGED INFLIGHT.” 30th. Since everything went by the book, we’ll perform the same activity about every two weeks to maintain an acceptable state of charge.”

The two-kilo helicopter - a combination of specially-designed components and off-the-shelf parts - is currently stowed on Perseverance’s belly and receives its charge from the rover’s power supply. Once Ingenuity is deployed on Mars’ surface after Perseverance touches down, its batteries will be charged solely by the helicopter’s own solar panel. If Ingenuity survives the cold Martian nights during its preflight checkout, the team will proceed with testing and eventually flight missions..

There should be enough charge in the six lithium-ion batteries to allow the helicopter a 30-Martian-day (31-Earth-day) experimental flight-test window.

If it succeeds, Ingenuity will prove that powered, controlled flight by an aircraft can be achieved at Mars, enabling future Mars missions to potentially add an aerial dimension to their explorations with secondgeneration rotorcraft. The same lithium-ion battery technology provides reliable, lightweight and compact energy storage for our Earth-based UPS systems. Modified versions of NASA’s own switchgear collect all information about each battery cell and will controls battery module management systems used in data centres around the world calculating state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) - so it’s easy to appreciate how the power industry has contributed to space exploration.

The output capacity is sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under a long-term supply agreement. Camfil won the bid to supply a 1,248 pieces of its 30/30 G4 pre-filters for two of their gas turbines.

To test the generator to its limit in a real-world setting, Cummins installed a C25G inside a test cell at its Power Systems Manston engineering and logistics facility and took the 10,000 sq. mt. site ‘off-grid’.

The Russian MWM distributor MKS Group of Companies has successfully commissioned the new energy center for the Russian industrial enterprise in Kartalinsky district of Chelyabinsk region. The new power plant will supply Russia’s largest natural stone production and processing company with power and heat. An MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas engine with an output of 2,000 kWel and an electrical efficiency of 44 percent forms the core of the energy centre.

IN BRIEF LTO BATTERIES FOR COPENHAGEN’S ZERO-EMISSIONS FERRIES Echandia Marine, a Swedish supplier of batteries and fuel cell systems for marine and rail systems, has announced the delivery of its DNV-GL certified lithium-titanium oxide (LTO) battery systems for five zero-emission passenger ferries in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Appointed by Movia, the country’s public transport provider, Damen Shipyards is supplying the vessels and selected Echandia Marine to provide the energy systems for the project.

Daman worked with several suppliers, including Eekels, Heliox and Staubli, to develop an auto-mooring system designed to ensure a secure connection between the vessel and charging infrastructure.

2019 LITHIUM BATTERY STORAGE FIRE DISASTER On 7th April 2019 one of the most significant battery storage fires in US history occurred in the the town of Surprise, Arizona. Around 16 months later Utility Arizona Public Service (APS) has released an in-depth investigation. WIP presents the essential conclusions of the report.

The report was prepared in partnership with utility and energy giant DNV GL, after an investigation by APS, the manufacturers involved, and third-party engineering and safety experts, has been filed with regulators the Arizona Corporation Commission.

Since the incident there have been several new safety requirements to prevent future failures and fires at battery installations.

Cause: The fire began when a rack of lithium-ion batteries supplied by LG Chem ignited and the fire suppressant deployed to douse the fire proved ineffective, leading to a buildup of explosive gases which ignited when firefighters opened a door, injuring four of them.

The batteries were part of a system operated and maintained by energy storage company Fluence. The conclusions reached in the investigation are as follows: * The suspected fire was actually an extensive cascading thermal runaway event, initiated by an internal cell failure within one battery cell in the BESS: cell pair 7, module 2, rack 15 (battery 7-2). * It’s believed this internal failure was caused by an internal cell defect, specifically abnormal Lithium metal deposition and dendritic growth within the cell. * The total flooding clean agent fire suppression system installed in the BESS operated early in the incident and in accordance with its design. Such systems are not capable of preventing or stopping cascading thermal runaway in a BESS. * As a result, thermal runaway cascaded and propagated from cell 7-2 through every cell and module in Rack 15, via heat transfer. This propagation was facilitated by the absence of adequate thermal barrier protections between battery cells, which may have stopped or slowed the propagation of thermal runaway.

PG&E AND TESLA BEGIN BUILDING 730MWH BATTERY SYSTEM Utility-scale battery storage took a major jump forward this month as Pacific Gas & Electric and Tesla began construction on a 182.5-MW lithium ion system in Monterey County, California, USA. PG&E will own the facility at its substation in Moss Landing, but the design, construction and maintenance operations will be joint effort both by the San Francisco-based utility and the battery and EV manufacturing giant. Once completed, the partners say, Moss Landing will be the largest utility-owned, li-ion battery energy storage system in the world.

“Battery energy storage plays an integral role in enhancing overall electric grid efficiency and reliability, integrating renewable resources while reducing reliance on fossil fuel generation. It can serve as an alternative to more expensive, traditional wires solutions, resulting in lower overall costs for our customers,” said Fong Wan, senior vice president, Energy Policy and Procurement, PG&E. “The scale, purpose and flexibility of the Moss Landing Megapack system make it a landmark in the development and deployment of utility-scale batteries.”

The new project includes the installation of 256 Tesla Megapack battery units on 33 concrete slabs. The Megapack, which was launched by the company last year and is being made at the Tesla Gigafactory1 in Nevada can store up to 3 MWh of electricity per unit.

SUNGROW TO SUPPLY INVERTER SOLUTIONS TO OMAN’S PV PLANT Sungrow, the global leading inverter solution supplier for renewables, will supply 1500V SG250HX inverter solutions to the 500 MWac IBRI II project in Oman, which is one of the largest utility-scale PV plants in the Sultanate.

The development reflects the company’s ambitions to support Oman’s ambition of lifting the renewable energy mix by 10 per cent. The delivery of inverter solutions will commencenext month.

The IBRI II PV project is an Independent Power Project (IPP) to be developed on a build, own, operate (BOO) basis. The US$400mn project was funded on a debt to equity ratio of 70:30 and a consortium consisting of ACWA Power, Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) and the Alternative Energy Projects Company (AEPC) has achieved the financial closure of it recently.

The project is expected to come online in the summer of 2021, barring aside any potential COVID-19 related considerations. It will supply clean power to state-owned utility Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) under a 15-year contract. The plant can generate roughly 1,300 GWh annually, enough to power 33,000 homes.

IN BRIEF NIGERIA’S GRID IS DUE FOR A MAJOR UPGRADE TO OFFSET OUTAGES Siemens’ pre-engineering contract to expand Nigeria’s grid capacity to 25,000MW has been approved.

This pre-engineering contract to expand the country’s grid capacity forms the first step in the Presidential Power Initiative, formerly Nigeria’s Electrification Roadmap, outlined in July 2019 by the Federal Government of Nigeria and Siemens.

Siemens will begin pre-engineering work on the transmission, distribution and meter data management systems infrastructure. Comprehensive studies and power systems analysis software for the Nigerian utilities are included in the work package. The PPI is meant to upgrade the Nigerian electricity network to achieve 25,000MW of operation capacity.

POWERING IRAQ DURING COVID-19: GE CARRIES OUT OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE WORKS AT BESMAYA POWER PLANT, SECURING 3GW FOR SUMMER DEMAND GE Gas Power has successfully completed services on four 9F.03 gas turbines, two steam turbines and six generators at Iraq’s Besmaya Power Plant safely and on time, while continuing to execute wider operations and maintenance (O&M) works at the site despite the many challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These service activities reduced the risk of unplanned downtime of power generation equipment at the site, enabling the plant to reliably supply up to 3 gigawatts (GW) of electricity to the national grid to help meet the peak summer demand for power.

Owned by Mass Group Holding (MGH), Besmaya is Iraq’s largest power plant. Phases 1 and 2 of the project can generate up to 3 GW and Phase 3, which is currently under construction, is expected to add up to another 1.5 GW. The facility is the first one in the country outside the Kurdistan region to be developed by an independent power producer on a build-own-operate basis for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity. GE has supplied eight gas turbines, four steam turbines and 12 generators that are covered by a 20-year service agreement and is also responsible for O&M services for Phases 1 and 2 of the project to ensure smooth operations at the site. Additionally, GE won a contract to supply four 9F.04 gas turbines and four generators for Phase 3. Much of the electricity generated at Besmaya is fed to the capital Baghdad and surrounding areas and its uninterrupted operations are critical to power local healthcare facilities, homes, businesses and more.

“At MGH, we are committed to strengthening Iraq’s power sector further,” stated Ahmad Ismail, Chairman of MGH. “The logistical and mobility constraints resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak led to several unexpected difficulties in carrying out the required service works at Besmaya. These included delays in the arrivals of parts and challenges in access to technical experts.”

GAS ENGINE INSTALLED & OPERATIONAL AT ROMANIAN SEWAGE PLANT

DEIF SUPPLIES CONTROLLER TO ADVANCED POWER SOLUTIONS

Clarke Energy’s service team in Romania are continuing to safely to support customers operations during difficult times.

Installation of a third Jenbacher engine and alternator has been completed for a customer at their sewage station near Bucharest. Works on the mechanical and electrical elements of the project are currently in progress.

Company service technicians are working to install the auxiliary equipment ready for August, when the third INNIO Jenbacher J616 engine will be commissioned and put into operation The new Jenbacher engine has been supplied to an existing customer who had previously installed two J616 engines in 2011. The additional engine will increase the plant’s power output capacity to 6.28MW. INNIO’s Jenbacher Type 6 gas engines are regarded as an advanced and reliable addition to the product line. The 1,500-rpm engine speed results in a high-power density with low installation costs, and its pre-combustion chamber achieves high efficiency with low emissions.

Other key features of the engine include: * A centrally-located purged pre-combustion chamber helps provide optimal ignition conditions. * The spark plug ignition energy is amplified in the pre-combustion chamber, facilitating stable and reliable combustion. * Miller valve timing creates reduced compression temperature and increased safety margin to knocking limits, providing improved ignition timing and high efficiency.

DEIF has supplied an AGC-4 controller to SAI Advanced Power Solutions based near O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, USA. SAI Advanced Power Solutions is a nationwide industry leader in switchgear due largely to its ability to specialise in custom solutions for customers.

To secure its long-term success in customised switchgear solutions, SAI engineers needed a reliable, go-to controller which did not need specialised programming when it wasn’t required. They also needed to avoid creating a steep learning curve every time a controller was installed.

At this point DEIF became involved.

Bell explains that by choosing DEIF, it allowed for “tremendous cost savings and avoids the lengthy start-up process” which typically comes from designing a controller.

Bell says proudly that SAI and DEIF have worked together for nearly a decade, but the choice of DEIF came only after extensive research and testing of other control systems.

IN BRIEF 443MW TURBINES BOUGHT FOR SHETLAND DEVELOPMENT SSE Renewables has ordered 443MW of capacity from wind turbine maker Vestas for the Viking Wind Farm in Shetland, UK. According to Vestas the deal will be its largest stand-alone wind park order in Europe. It will supply 103 V117-4.2MW turbines, optimised to work at 4.3MW. The turbine has been designed to withstand extreme wind conditions, and is efficient enough to lower the levelised cost of electricity.

The Shetlands location is projected to provide the highest energy yields in the world, based on the high average capacity factor of nearby pre-existing turbines.

$219BN BATTERY PLANT FOR AUSTRALIA The Government of Queensland approved plans for a $2.18 billion lithium-ion battery factory in the Australian state.

Charge CCCV, Boston Energy and Innovation and Magnis Resources are co-owners of the Imperium 3 consortium, which has been promoting its Townsville factory project since 2019.

The plans cover a 357ha (882-acre) site 40km south of Townsville. A factory built on the site would develop cylindrical Li-ion 32700 form factor cells for a variety of energy storage purposes. The consortium will develop the 18GWh battery factory over three stages, each manufacturing 6GWhs. Regional government has given a grant of $2.25m for the project. The consortium promises a 21% return on investments, with a net present value of $1.63 billion.

IN BRIEF AZELIO AND ALEC ENERGY TO BUILD RENEWABLE ENERGY STORAGE SITE IN MASDAR CITY Azeliohas signed an agreement with ALEC Energy to set up renewable energy storage site in Masdar City.

Next month Azelio will install a verification project in association with with Masdar and Khalifa University.

The purpose of the installation is to evaluate Azelio’s energy storage technology for inclusion in the Masdar product portfolio for current and future renewable energy projects.

The agreement with ALEC Energy to establish an installation site was stipulated in a recent MoU which details a partnership over 49MW of installed capacity from Azelio’s energy storage until 2025.

EXTENSIVE POWER UPGRADE FOR LONDON-BASED CENTRE’S UPS Future-tech reports that it has undertaken a contract involving a 5MW, former dot-com data centre which required refurbishment and a power upgrade.

The upgrade was to ensure that the data centre could continue to support its clients’ changing requirements and ‘remain at a market acceptable technical standard’.

According to the company, a London-based data centre operator engaged with Future-tech to design and plan the logistics and sequencing associated with the refurbishment and upgrade of its primary data centre solution.

All power and cooling equipment - from the transformers, generators and UPS through to the air handling units and BMS - had to be refurbished or replaced whilst the centre maintained live services to existing clients.

SEIZURE OF GENSETS WITH FAKE STAMFORD ALTERNATORS Previously, the company reports that Customs Officers at the port of Eilat in Israel seized 10 generating sets originating from United Arab Emirates and bound for the region. The generating sets all contained fake STAMFORD alternators which were decoupled from the sets and destroyed.

The illegal trade of fake alternators has been growing in recent years and affects all major alternator manufacturers. Cummins Generator Technologies say it ‘takes a zero tolerance approach to counterfeiting of any kind and tracks down illegal counterfeiters’.

The 10 fake STAMFORD HC5 alternators were discovered by Customs Officers who have been trained by Cummins to screen shipments passing through the seaport for possible counterfeits.

Originating from Future Power International in Sharjah, the alternators looked similar to genuine STAMFORD alternators on the outside, but in reality fake STAMFORD alternators have sub-standard built quality, come with no warranty and can potentially cause irreparable damage to the generator engine.

A company spokesman commented: “Authentic Cummins STAMFORD alternators are manufactured using premium materials, under controlled processes and by highly trained workforces. In addition, they undergo the most rigorous alternator testing in the industry. Time and again fake alternators fail to perform, leaving unsuspecting customers out of pocket and often without recourse.”

IN BRIEF JINKOSOLAR TO SUPPLY 1 GW OF MODULES FOR PHASE V OF DUBAI SOLAR COMPLEX JinkoSolar Holding Co Ltd has said it will supply around 1 GW of its highefficiency photovoltaic (PV) modules for Phase V of a solar mega-project implemented by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in the UAE. The solar panel maker said it has signed a contract with Shanghai Electric Group Co for the supply of modules. Shanghai Electric has recently been selected as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the fifth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar complex in Dubai, which isprojected to be producing 5GW of energy by 2030.

FIRST SOLAR POWER PLANT IN CHILE IS WORLD’S FIRST TO DELIVER GRID SERVICES IN ENERGY MILESTONE First Solar Inc has announced that its 141-megawatt (MW)AC Luz del Norte photovoltaic (PV) power plant is the world’s first known utility-scale solar facility licensed to deliver ancillary grid services commercially.

Chile’s independent system operator (ISO), Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional, recently added Luz del Norte to its portfolio of large-scale power generators that are approved to deliver a range of grid services, including automatic generation control (AGC).

The facility, located in Copiapó, Chile, is now being used by the ISO to manage the frequency of the country’s electricity system, helping ensure the grid’s reliability and stability, in addition to generating clean, renewable energy. This follows an extensive audit, jointly conducted by Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional, Laborelec Latam, and First Solar, to evaluate the plant’s capabilities. Until now, grid operators around the world had to rely exclusively on thermoelectric or hydroelectric power plants to respond to changes in load by balancing generation.

“We are very pleased with this achievement as this increases the spectrum of technologies capable of providing the services needed to maintain a safe and reliable operation of the electrical system,” said Carlos Barria, head of the Forecast and Regulatory Analysis, and Environment and Climate Change at Chile’s Ministry of Energy.”

Barria told WIP magazine: “These demonstrated capabilities are in line with our plans in integrating higher levels of renewable energy in our grid, which will enable us to achieve our goal to phase out coal-fired power plants by 2040 and to be carbon neutral by 2050.”

Utility-scale solar’s grid capabilities were previously proven as part of a 2016 demonstration project by the California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO), the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and First Solar.

RWE WILL INVEST $2.4BN INTO MAJOR RENEWABLE ENERGY EXPANSION The German utility RWE reports that it is planning to invest $2.4 billion to increase its share of the renewable energy market.

RWE CEO Rolf Martin Schmitz comments: “We are very pleased how well our offer was accepted and how our growth ambition in renewable energy is being supported by our investors.

“The additional financial flexibility enables us to enhance our project pipeline and to accelerate our continued growth in wind and solar power. At the same time, we underline RWE’s position as one of the global leading companies in renewable energy.”

The company recently completed the issue of 61.5 million new shares to the institutional investors in a private placement through an accelerated bookbuilding process which produced a 10% increase in its utility’s share capital.

As Germany’s biggest utility company, RWE is planning to invest €5bn by the end of 2022 and increase its renewables portfolio by more than 13GW. Part of the proceeds from the share issue will be used to buy 2.7 gigawatts (GW) worth of European wind and solar projects from turbine maker Nordex in a deal made public at the end of July 2020.

VISTRA NEGOTIATES PERMIT FOR 1.1GW BATTERY STORAGE IN THE USA Texas-based energy company Vistra Corp has been granted permission to expand an already under construction battery storage system alongside a gas-fired power plant to provide up to 1,500MW, or 6,000MWh of energy storage.

In May 2020 Vistra Corp revealed plans to expand the size of the battery energy storage system at its Moss Landing natural gas-fired power plant site in Moss Landing, California.

After entering into a 10-year resource adequacy agreement with Californian utility Pacific Gas and

Electric Company (PG&E) and, subject to approval by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Vistra Corp is keen to develop a second phase.

This would have seen the development of two Moss Landing energy storage projects – a 300MW/1,200MWh Phase 1 battery storage plant, and a 100MW/400MWh second phase.

Media reports suggest the company has received approval to develop an additional 1,200MW worth of battery storage across four 300MW battery blocks as part of a revised expansion initiative.

IN BRIEF NEW LOGISTICS CENTRE FOR DEUTZ A new 160,000 sq. ft. operation in Pendergrass, Ga, USA has been opened by the Deutz Corp.

The new Deutz Sequence Center is located near the company’s Xchange remanufactured engine production facility, also in Pendergrass. The facility is designed to support the reman production facility as well assembling a variety of engine packages.

“By centralising all logistics activities at the new Sequence Center site, we can now increase our output by using additional floor space for more remanufacturing and assembly work,” reports Bob Mann, president and CEO of Deutz Corp.

“With the Sequence Center, Deutz is concentrating all operations activities in the Pendergrass area,” said Christian Vorspel-Rueter, executive vice president and CFO.

OUT NOW - TWO UPGRADED VERSIONS OF NATURAL GAS ENGINES DESIGNED FOR EMERGENCY STANDBY APPLICATION BY POWER SOLUTIONS INTERNATIONAL (PSI) Power Solutions International (PSI) has released two upgraded versions of its natural gas engines. The high-output engines – a 14.6 L and 21.9 L – are designed for emergency standby applications in the energy industry.

The 14.6 L engine can reach 350 kW at 1800 rpm, which is above the maximum power rating of 300 kW for the standard version of the same engine. The 21.9-litre engine has a maximum power rating of 500 kW at 1800 rpm, above its standard maximum power rating of 450 kW. The standard versions of the 14.6 and 21.9 L engines remain available.

PSI achieved the higher outputs by making several improvements to each engine. The company hopes these high-output versions will benefit the energy industry by allowing customers to replace larger engines for the 350 kW and 500 kW nodes.

PSI’s engineering department made a number of improvements to each engine to boost their maximum power ratings and have been validated through rigorous reliability and durability testing.

These industry-leading, power-dense engines are widely considered to strengthen PSI’s overall product portfolio from 25kW to 1250kW in the international natural gas standby market.

IN BRIEF TUNISIA TO DEVELOP 30MW SIDI MANSOUR WIND FARM Climate Fund Managers (CFM) and UPC Renewables (UPC) will develop a 30MW Sidi Mansour wind farm in Tunisia.

The project will be one of the first wind independent power producers (IPP) in the country. UPC will lead the development of the project with its local team who will lead land security, permit-issuing, grid connection, wind resource assessment and engineering and procurement contracts.

Brian Caffyn, chairman of the UPC Group commented: “We can begin the construction of the Sidi Mansour wind farm in 2020, helping stimulate the Tunisian economy, create local jobs and a social plan for local communities while respecting international environmental protection guidelines.”

The Sidi Mansour Wind Project will assist Tunisia in meeting its renewable energy goals. “As potentially the first Wind IPP in Tunisia, this project will be a testament to how CI1’s full lifecycle financing solution can unlock investment in renewable energy in new markets,” reports Sebastian Surie, regional head of Africa for CFM. Over its lifespan, the Sidi Mansour Project is expected to lead to a reduction of 56,645 carbon tonnes.

THE LONGEST ELECTRICITY INTERCONNECTOR IN THE WORLD WILL BEGIN AT LINCOLNSHIRE & CONNECT THE UK WITH REVSING IN SOUTH JUTLAND, DENMARK Viking Link project is a joint venture between National Grid Ventures, part of National Grid, and the Danish electricity system owner and operator, Energinet.

The 1.4 GW high voltage electricity interconnector will be the longest in the world when completed, stretching 765km subsea and onshore connecting from Bicker Fen in Lincolnshire, UK and Revsing in South Jutland, Denmark to enable clean energy to be shared.

National Grid’s Viking Link infrastructure project marks a major milestone with Siemens Energy Ltd, as the construction of the world’s longest electricity interconnector begins, representing a significant step in the UK’s journey to net zero.

The construction phase of the Viking Link Interconnector project, a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link between the UK and Denmark, has commenced with Siemens Energy Ltd mobilizing to site to start the construction of the first stage of works, a 2.4km long access road for the Bicker Fen converter station site.

Siemens Energy was appointed to construct the UK and Denmark converter stations on both ends of the interconnector link. UK work started in July to build a new access road to the site.

The permanent road will take nine months to complete and will enable access for the major construction equipment to the Converter Station and for operational vehicles to access the site once the Converter station is completed in 2023.

Viking Link project is a joint venture between National Grid Ventures, part of National Grid, and the Danish electricity system owner and operator, Energinet.

MACE SHINES BRIGHTEST TO SECURE RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLAR PROJECT IN WEST BERKSHIRE, UK Mace, the international consultancy and construction company, has been chosen by the UK’s West Berkshire Council to provide project management services for an exciting solar energy scheme in the region.

Under the terms of the commission, Mace will manage the design, supply, installation and commissioning of rooftop PV/solar electricity generation systems at six locations across West Berkshire. The pilot project is expected to generate around 600,000kWh of energy and reduce carbon emissions by 270 tonnes a year, with the hope that it will serve as a catalyst for further opportunities across the district.

The scheme forms an integral part of the council’s wider plans to achieve carbon neutrality in the UK by 2030, and is the first of its kind in the UK, being delivered by the council as part of a Community Municipal Investment (CMI), which offers residents a unique way of investing directly into district’s green energy future.

Mace secured the project management role through the Crown Commercial Services Heat Networks and Electricity Generation Assets (HELGA) framework.

NEW DAWN SHINES ON RESURGENT EUROPEAN SOLAR MARKET - SOLAR IS RISING IN EUROPE

SOLAR POWER GENERATION IS RISING IN EUROPE, NEW DATA FROM ENERGY MARKET ANALYST ENAPPSYS HAS SHOWN In the first six months of this year, generation from this power source across Europe amounted to 68TWh – up from the 59TWh in the key corresponding period in 2019 and 70% higher than the 2015 figure of 40TWh. In the second quarter of 2020, solar output hit a record 47.6TWh – up 19% from the previous peak in Q2 2018.

The rise was attributed to the increase in solar capacity across Europe, as countries across the continent attempt to improve their environmental footprint by producing a greater proportion of electricity from renewable sources.

This rise in capacity slowed between 2017 and 2019, with solar generation totalling 38.3TWh, 40.1TWh and 39.1TWh in Q2 of 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively. But this year it has risen again significantly, raising

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN 2020 THAT WAS NOT HAPPENING BEFORE?” the question: what is happening in 2020 that was not happening over the previous three years?

Fifteen years ago, solar farms provided only a very minor contribution towards overall European power demand, with only a few GWs of solar projects across the entire continent. These provided only a nominal share of overall power production.

By 2011 solar was in the middle of a transformational phase and over a five-year period from 2009 to 2013, levels of solar capacity in Europe exploded from around 15GW at the start of 2009 to around six times that figure by the start of 2013.

This transformation was driven primarily by sharp rises in capacity particularly in Germany and Italy, but since the start of 2013 levels of increase have tailed off, with

growth within Britain and a steady trickle of new capacity in Germany providing much of the growth. As growth in these regions have tailed off, more recently it has predominantly been France and Spain that have driven forwards the growth of solar production.

Other countries such as Bulgaria, Greece and Portugal have also been seeing growth in solar output recently, but these growth levels are smaller in terms of the overall size of the increments.

Germany has one of the largest levels of solar capacity (more than 50 GW) in the world, behind China, the US and Japan.

Rob Lalor, director of EnAppSys, said: “The growth of solar capacity in Germany started in earnest in 2009 and was supported by generous subsidies, which led to a raft of rooftop solar installations.

“Near the peak in growth of solar capacity in Germany, a cap was introduced at 52GW, after which subsidy support would cease to become available or would become more tightly controlled via auctions.”

Lalor reports: “In 2019 this cap was removed as levels of solar installed started to close in on this upper limit, but levels of subsidy support have been declining in Germany and this has acted to slow the growth that still occurs.

“The use of auctions means that the price of renewable subsidies is no longer set by the government, but is instead market-driven, and the price of Feed in Tariffs (FITs) have been falling since this change in 2014 as a result.”

He explains: “In Italy the market was similarly able to benefit from government incentives to build out over a similar time range, with installations slowing after significant cuts were made in order to reduce the impact upon consumers’ electricity bills.”

“The UK also saw a similar, but slightly later boom-andbust-style build-out with developers rapidly taking subsidies as panel prices fell faster than subsidy values. The rate of build-out subsequently fell with the introduction of a new, more restrictive subsidy regime.”

He concludes: “After cuts in subsidy regimes occurred across European markets, growth in build-out has since slowed, partly due to lower incentives, and also influenced by reduced investor confidence in the reliability of existing schemes. Spain was another region where subsidy support was removed, having provided early support for renewables.”

CAMGT 4V-300 INSTALLED AT COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANTS

A

leading independent energy producer in Thailand operates gas turbine combined cycle power plants with an output of 1600MW each, with four M701F4 gas turbines, two steam turbines, and six generators. The output capacity is sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under a long-term supply agreement. However, noise complaints from neighboring communities prompted the plants to evaluate a noise-reducing filtration system for the facilities.

Plant A is located in the Ayutthaya Province and is located approximately 70km north of Bangkok, whereas Plant B is located 25km north of Plant A in the Saraburi Province. Both locations experience high humidity with an annual mean temperature of 36°C (97°F). Seasonal burning of rice straw by rice farmers to prepare for the next harvest season also adds to an unavoidable filtration challenge.

The original filtration solution was a two-stage configuration with a G4 efficiency prefilter and an H13 efficiency final filter. Due to the size of the gas turbines and proximity to the community nearby, the local government requested an Environmental

Assessment (EIA) by a third party on noise generation of the original MHI-recommended air intake system.

The system passed the noise requirements, however, both plants eventually replaced their final filters with a local competitor‘s H13 filters. After replacement, the noise level increase became noticeable and disturbed the surrounding community and operators working nearby. As a result, the client needed a new H13 filter but with acoustical testing as a requirement before purchase.

In 2016, Plant A had issues with short prefilter life. Camfil won the bid to supply a 1,248 pieces of its 30/30 G4 pre-filters for two of their gas turbines.

The filter life lasted for more than 8 months, outlasting the original filter life by a factor of two. This resulted in higher profitability due to fewer filter purchases and labour requirements for filter replacement. Subsequent to the success of the pre-filter stage at Plant A, Camfil was asked to bid on H13 efficiency final filters to solve the noise issues.

Camfil’s acoustical engineering team performed an analysis to explain the sound insertion loss of Camfil’s CamGT 4V-300, H13 efficiency final filters (per

EN1822) at different frequencies when compared to the existing competitor H13 filters. Research shows that the CamGT 4V-300 has a higher sound insertion loss throughout each frequency. Further, the CamGT reduces noise by 4dBA in excess of the local competitor filter. An increase of 3dBA means double the noise. A 4dBA improvement means that the CamGT filter has over twice the noise reduction in apparent sound as compared to the competitor filter.

Camfil was awarded the contract due to proven product quality and performance, the efforts of the sales team, and the measures taken to provide the optimal solution through analysis, testing, and reporting.

The CamGT 4V-300 filter performed well on the noise test due to its four solid v-banks. The structural mass helps to improve acoustical properties by reducing noise from passing through the filter. Since the competitor filter is constructed with only a deep pleated media pack, the sound attenuation is limited.

As this competitor media has very little mass it stops very little sound, unlike the CamGT 4V-300 which does it well. www.camfil.com

NEW STEAM TURBINES FOR ADVANCED THERMAL-FIRED POWER PLANT -THE VITAL PALU 3 PROJECT IN INDONESIA

T

he Pilsen steam turbine manufacturer will supply two 50MW steam turbines, including other parts of additional technology and equipment, for one of the most modern power generating plant in Indonesia.

The project site is located in a seismically-active area and during the execution Doosan Škoda Power used its rich experience from similar projects it had previously installed in Indonesia, Chile and Saudi Arabia.

Deliveries to the construction site will take place in mid-2021 and will be followed by assembly work under expert supervision of Doosan Škoda Power.

The first steam is expected to be invited to the turbines in 2023.

The Palu 3 power plant will be one of the most advanced technology in Indonesia. Circulating fluidized bed boilers have been chosen as the source of steam.

They have been designed to achieve maximum fossil fuel combustion efficiency and thus will significantly contribute to reducing nitrogen oxide and sulphur emissions.

The new boilers will be installed in a block with two 50MW DST-G20 steam turbines with accessories.

In addition to supplying the steam turbines, Doosan Škoda Power is providing a synchronous generator, oil system, control system and other equipment, including a design for the turbine pedestal and coordination of the applicable part of the project.

“Construction and design work has been underway since February 2020. The steam turbine design includes a reserve by which the power output can be raised to 64.5MW, which could increase the utility value of the technology in future,” says Markéta Leitlová, Project Manager at Doosan Škoda Power.

The Pilsen company is working with the parent company Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd., on the project.

The end user of the new plant will be the Indonesian government-owned power company,

SUCCESSFUL TEST: OPERATION OF THE C25G AT THE MANSTON FACILITY COMES TO AN END Cummins Inc. has announced the successful long-term field test of its latest natural gas-powered generator, the C25G, which has been operational at the Cummins Power Systems Manston site in Kent, England, since September 2019.

L

aunched at Middle East Energy in March 2020, the C25G gas generator series is the latest addition to the Cummins natural gas generator portfolio.

To test the generator to its limit in a real-world setting, Cummins installed a C25G inside a test cell at its Power Systems Manston engineering and logistics facility and took the 10,000 sq. mt. site ‘off-grid’. The generator ran for 60 days - 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday and for 12 hours a day Saturday to Sunday - fuelled by pipeline natural gas meeting Cummins Power Systems Manston facility’s electricity requirements.

Tejaskumar Amin, Global Chief Engineer for Cummins Power Systems, said: “We have a strict testing regime for our new products, however, we wanted to push the C25G to its limit in a real-world setting; and as the generator is ideal for factories, we decided to use it to power our own site. Such a field-test is unique in Cummins’ 100-year history and we learned a lot about the product which will enable us to serve our customers better.

“The test is yet another example of how Cummins is working hard in reducing its carbon footprint through not only producing its own power but also exporting the surplus power to the grid.

Amin adds: “This underlines Cummins’ commitment to its own Planet 2050 Strategy, which includes reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions from Cummins facilities and operations by 50%, as well as cutting absolute lifetime global greenhouse gas emissions from newly sold products by 25%.”

Over the course of the test, the C25G supplied a daily average of 300kWh of electricity to the site and exported around 200kWh of electricity to the national grid. With such an installation, Cummins gained huge financial savings and reduced the electricity consumption and reliance from the grid.

The C25G is engineered to deliver superior fuel efficiency with a power density of 500kW (50Hz) and 580kW (60Hz) from a 25L engine, while providing reduced maintenance costs per kWh. The C25G generator series offers a total package of gas generator capabilities for prime, peaking power and island mode applications, while being suitable for a diverse set of industries ranging from hospitals and manufacturing, to commercial building and greenhouses requiring reliable continuous operation.

CONVERT SC FLEX STORAGE CONVERTERS - BACKBONE OF THE HYBRID OFF-GRID POWER PLANT OF THE BAYERO UNIVERSITY KANO (BUK)

A

EG Power Solutions, a global provider of power supply systems and solutions for industrial, critical infrastructure environments and innovative power electronic applications, has announced that Convert SC Flex storage converters are running successfully as backbone of the hybrid off-grid power plant of the Bayero University Kano (BUK) in Nigeria.

Inaugurated in 2019, the hybrid micro-grid of BUK is Africa’s largest off-grid solar hybrid power plant. The remote micro-grid totals 7.1MW capacity, combining 3.5MWp of solar PV generation from 10,680 solar panels, 2.4MW of backup generators and 8.1MWh of battery energy storage.

The storage system provides grid-forming and balances load requirement with the different sources of supply.

The Convert SC Flex storage converters are key to the process, operating in voltage and frequency control mode. Together with the storage battery Convert SC Flex keep the voltage and the frequency of the microgrid in its target limits, balancing rapid variations of generator output or its connected loads like pumps or lighting.

The systems are also used to black-start the complete microgrid after any kind of interruption.

Funded by the Nigerian government, the phase 1 of the project is supplying electricity to 9 universities and a teaching hospital.

Two more phases are planned, to be funded respectively by the World Bank and the African Development Bank. In total over 55000 students, more than 3000 staff at universities will benefit of the program while 2850 streetlights can additionally be powered by the hybrid microgrid.

MODULAR POWER PLANT AT RUSSIA’S LARGEST STONE PRODUCTION & PROCESSING FACILITY

T

he Russian MWM distributor MKS Group of Companies has successfully commissioned the new energy center for the Russian industrial enterprise in Kartalinsky district of Chelyabinsk

region.

The new power plant will supply Russia’s largest natural stone production and processing company with power and heat. An MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas engine with an output of 2,000 kWel and an electrical efficiency of 44 percent constitutes the core of the new energy centre.

Stabilised Power Supply for a Stable Production Flow The new highly efficient energy centre stabilises the company’s power supply and thus the entire production and manufacturing process.

In 2019, the company opened a workshop with innovative equipment, which depends on uninterrupted power supply in 24-hour shift operation.

The plant’s main products are high-quality mineral marble fillers with a high white proportion from the Eleninsky and Polotsky deposits. Microframe fillers and marble chips are used for the production of dry construction mixtures, paint coatings, linoleum, leather substitute materials, cleaning agents, ceramic tiles, tableware, paper, and even food and pharmaceutical products (e.g. for dental whiteners).

The plant, which mainly processes marble from the Eleninsky and Polotsky deposits, runs 24-hours- a-day and depends on uninterrupted power supply.

To maximise the energy security for the sensitive production and processing of natural stone, MKS has established a modular power plant (MPP) close to the factory.

Thanks to their design, modular power plants can be set up anywhere in no time and can be used for distributed energy supply even in regions devoid of an infrastructure.

Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Decreases Energy Costs An MWM TCG 2020 gas engine forms the core of the power plant. The energy centre employs combined heat and power (CHP) generation and produces power and heat energy directly where it is needed.

Optionally, excess heat can be fed into a local or district heating network or be used for generating steam.

Following the go-live of the power plant, this efficient form of energy generation reduced the company’s power costs to a third of the former

expenses. Thus, the power plant’s payback period is only about three years.

OPEN-CYCLE POWER PLANT WITH 300MW OF INSTALLED POWER TO OPEN IN MARBACH, BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG, GERMANY

A

nsaldo Energia has been awarded contracts for the design, supply, installation and servicing of an open-cycle power plant with installed power of 300 MW in Marbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The Marbach 4 plant will be equipped with an AE94.3A gas turbine, the related generator and the auxiliary systems. The plant will be operational by October 2022.

The total value of the EPC and LTSA contracts amounts to over €100 million and the customer is EnBW – Energie Baden-Württemberg AG based in Karlsruhe.

The contract is part of the German TSO project “besondere netztechnische Betriebsmittel – bnBm” (network reserve project), with tenders issued in four areas of Southern Germany.

Ansaldo Energia, which has already been awarded an EPC contract for the Irsching power plant in Southern Bavaria as part of this project, confirms its presence in Germany with these new orders and is proud to support EnBW AG in its efforts to provide reliable electricity and a stable grid in the framework of massive and constantly growing use of renewable energy.

The open cycle gas turbine operates on the principle of drawing the fresh atmospheric air at ambient conditions into the compressor where the air is compressed by a centrifugal or an axial flow compressor.

The compressor will raise the temperature and pressure of the atmospheric air to the levels specified by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

The compressed air at the higher pressure is fed into a combustion chamber, where the fuel will be burned at an essentially constant pressure.

The high-pressure hot gases drive the turbine and developed power owing to the rotation of the turbine shaft can be used for a number of applications such as power generation and prime movers for industrial devices.

The exhaust gases which leave the turbine are released into the atmosphere.The cycle is classified as an open cycle system since the exhaust gases are not recirculated but released into the atmosphere.

Most gas turbines use the simple or open gas turbine cycle. It consists of the following thermodynamic processes: Compression; Combustion; Expansion; and Heat rejection.

The compression is carried out using axial and centrifugal compressors, while the expansion is usually carried out using axial turbines but some small gas turbines use radial turbines. The combustion process

is normally achieved by burning hydrocarbon fuels in a combustion chamber, and various stages or zones are required to achieve satisfactory combustion.

At least two stages are required, corresponding to the primary zone, where the fuel is burnt and heat is released, and a dilution zone, where the temperature of the products of combustion is reduced to meet the required operating temperature of the turbine. The compressor and the turbine are mechanically linked by a shaft and are a schematic representation of a single-shaft gas turbine.

An ideal gas turbine cycle, which is known as the Joules cycle or Brayton cycle.

A major difference from a classical open gas turbine cycle is the partial or full recirculation of flue gas to the inlet of the compressor. Limited amounts of recirculation will increase

the CO2 and decrease the oxygen content of the gas entering the compressor. Above a certain recirculation rate (40– 60%) there is not enough oxygen present to sustain stable combustion and to burn the fuel completely.

When oxygen is supplied, e.g. by an ASU, the recirculation rate can be effectively increased to 100%. At this limit of oxy-fuel combustion, no atmospheric air is used within the cycle. Since CO2 and water have to be continuously removed from the system, the full recirculation case is more correctly labelled a semi-closed cycle. Since the exhaust temperature behind the heat recovery steam generator of a bottoming steam cycle is usually in the order of 80–120 °C, a cooler is required both for the CO2 scrubber and for the compressor inlet. www.ansaldoenergia.com

COMMON REASONS FOR GENERATOR FAILURE (AND HOW TO AVOID THEM)

ith society increasingly reliant on electricity, interruptions in power supplies have the potential to cause chaos, impacting everything from our home lives to travel, business productivity to data integrity and, in more extreme cases, loss of life and damage to infrastructure. To mitigate this risk, having a backup power source is crucial. Here, Paul Brickman from Crestchic Loadbanks explores some of the common reasons for generator failure.

Battery failures One of the most common causes of generator problems is battery failure.

In short, a failed battery won’t supply the current the generator needs to start. Battery problems can be caused by sulfation build up, which occurs when the lead sulfates in the electrolyte begin to coat the battery’s lead plates.

As the sulfation builds on the plates, it inhibits the electrical conversion, preventing the battery from providing the current needed to start the generator.

Dirty and loose connections are the culprit for a host of battery problems, from a build-up of lead debris in the sedimentary trays to open cells caused by overcurrent or insufficient battery capacity.

Preventative maintenance is key to overcoming these issues and overcoming potential failure before it occurs.

However, while checking the system and keeping an eye out for puddles of coolant is important, overheating can also be caused by a buildup of dirt and debris, a broken fan or fan belt, clogged injectors or air filters, or low oil levels.

The only way to accurately test a cooling system and ensure that the thermostats are fully open is to test the generator under load. Weekly running, while vital to the overall

health of the system, simply won’t cause the thermostat to open enough to test the system - making loadbank testing the best way to mitigate any issues.

Leaks or “wet stacking” Very often, problems that are perceived to be oil leaks are actually caused by “wet stacking”, where thick, dark liquid drips from the engine’s exhaust and turbo chargers. Wet stacking usually happens when engines operate significantly below their rated output level (recommended levels vary between manufacturers). This kind of excessive no-load run time causes a buildup of unburned fuel deposits around the combustion chamber, injector nozzles, piston rings, turbo charger and exhaust. This, combined with condensed water results in carbon particles and moisture gathering around the exhaust system. The potential impact of wet-stacking includes reduced power, increased emissions and increased operational costs. When this happens, the engine can be cleaned up by running it at full load to burn off excess fuel, using a loadbank to place a load on the system. If the generator is used below the rated output level on a regular or consistent basis, consider pairing it with a load bank more permanently to keep it running at 70-80% of rated capacity and prevent a “wet stacking” from occurring. A load tracking loadbank is ideal for this application.

Emissions Issues With emissions controls becoming increasingly stringent, the use of exhaust aftertreatment systems is becoming more commonplace. These tend to require the engine to be running at an optimum load / temperature. If the generator does not have sufficient load the performance of the aftertreatment could be compromised, in this instance a

Fuel issues The increased level of bio content in fuel can exacerbate stagnating fuel issues causing microbial build-up in the fuel. Ultimately, this build-up could result in the generator being unable to run when called upon. Polishing / cleaning the fuel removes harmful sediment such as water, sludge and microbial contamination through filtration and circulation Some generators are equipped with an auto shutdown mechanism when the fuel reaches critical levels. Running out of fuel, or problems caused by fuel stagnating in the system, can be avoided by maintaining the fuel tanks and checking them for water and contaminants which can damage the system. By the same token, high fuel level alarms can be activated by natural thermal expansion of the fuel on a hot day.

Human error Naturally, there are times when simple human error can cause the generator not to start up when needed. The most common issues relate to switches being left in the wrong position when weekly checks are made. These must be checked and reset to prevent non-start situations, ideally by a trained and experienced technician.

Alternator integrity The alternator is the part of the generator which converts the mechanical energy of the engine into electrical energy, making it vital to the effective performance of the system. Alternator housing, windings, bearings, controls and cooling system should all be included in your maintenance. A resistive-reactive loadbank test will help to identify any problems and test the alternator’s capability to provide the required voltage and pinpoint any work that needs to be done to prevent the failure of the generator.

The role of loadbank testing The reality is often that those in charge of maintaining backup power have no regular testing schedule, making an assumption that occasionally powering the generator up, testing for a minimal period, or a visual inspection, will overcome any potential issues. By not testing the system adequately, the generator is put at risk of failure with the fuel, exhaust and cooling system untested, along with the potential for embedded moisture, putting the system in the very high-risk category.

Using a loadbank overcomes this risk, by applying a load to the generator which imitates the operational or ‘real’ load that a generator would use in normal operational conditions. Properly planned and implemented, loadbanks can be used as part of a preventative maintenance strategy, minimising the likelihood of unscheduled breakdowns and outages and effectively negating the potential risk of downtime.

THE WALSALL COUNCIL DATA CENTRE POWER UPGRADE

PS Systems plc was involved in a contract to upgrade the obsolete UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) System within the Walsall Council data centre. It provided a new standby generator which has not only reinstated reliability, but dramatically improved the efficiency of the whole system, reports the company.

Walsall is situated in the West Midlands. It has excellent communication links to the rest of the country, lying close to the heart of national road and rail networks. The Borough combines urban, suburban and rural communities. Walsall’s population is over 250,000 and increasing. The Council works with its partners to deliver The Walsall Health and Wellbeing Strategy as well as its own Corporate Plan.

The Council’s contract The Council published a tender to engage with a single Contractor who could design, supply, install, test and commission a new standby generator and UPS system for the ICT equipment.

The contract included: • Isolation and removal of their existing UPS System • Supply and installation of a new generator set • Supply and Installation of a UPS system • Supply and installation of new Air Conditioning change over switch to the existing generator set • All associated wiring and control systems • All Associated works After weeks of negotiating and ensuring the correct solution was in place for the council, UPS Systems plc was able to finalise the installation locations for the suitably selected equipment.

During the tender process, the AKSA generator was located at the top of a multi-storey car park ramp. There were issues with the amount of space which would remain for vehicles to turn in if the proposed location was used.

This location caused safety concerns as well as complications with the sound attenuation and exhaust of the new standby generator.

A new site was selected and permission was acquired from the police within the council to relocate their bicycle racks.

Once the location had been agreed, the challenge then was delivering the AKSA generator into its final position. The existing ramp within the car park has a

has a full height of 1.9m. This disparity was overcome by temporarily removing the sound attenuating canopy and stripping the generator down to deliverable component sizes.

To ensure UPS Systems plc was able to meet the demands of the council, the sound attenuating canopy was reconstructed whilst in the final position as the car parking space had a final clearance of 2.1m.

Once the canopy was successfully rebuilt, the company engineers were then able to establish the exhaust system along the concrete ceiling to its final safe location for the extraction of the fumes.

To further protect the installation from vehicle damage, armoured coving was installed around the exposed side of the AKSA generator.

To provide new essential protection to the facility, a generator was provided which is powered by a Doosan engine combined with a Mecc Alte alternator.

The generator is managed by the industry leading DeepSea 7320 controller which was fitted with a remote connection facility for monitoring the generator over the GSM network. The AKSA generator was supplied with an integral 600 litre base tank

which will provide 20 hours continuous running at 50% load in the event of a mains failure.

To facilitate the change over between utility mains and standby AKSA generator, a 400A rated change over panel was installed. The changeover panel is fully configurable and operates totally autonomously.

The replacement UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) had to be located in the data centre itself with the 120 new UPS batteries being installed in the roof plant space.

To provide the new critical protection to the Walsall Data Centre, a Riello UPS MST160 UPS system was selected.

The Multi Sentry UPS systems from Riello UPS are industry leading from the perspective of their reliability, efficiency and footprint.

In the event of a mains failure, the new UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and UPS Battery system will provide 30 minutes of battery back up when operating at the full load of 160kW and 74 minutes if the UPS is running at 50% load. The UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) was also installed with a new fully-rated external bypass switch for complete isolation. www.upssystems.co.uk

A NEW GENSET OFFERING RELIABLE POWER TO DATA CENTRES & BANKS

A

new genset from US-based Taylor Power Systems features a Perkins 2806C-E18TTAG7 diesel engine rated 1101 hp mechanical/755 kWe. Rated 750 kW, the TD750 unit effectively bridges the gap between Taylor’s current 600 kW model and its 800 kW genset. In one stroke, Taylor has expanded its standby diesel range to 26 models with ratings from 9 kW to 2000 kW. Designed and built with bore and stroke dimensions of 145x183mm, this inline 6-cylinder diesel offers a displacement of 18.1L. It also includes air-to-air charge cooling and parallel turbocharging. Compact, power dense engines like these have proved much easier for OEMs to package, reducing complexity and simplifying transportation all of which generate cost savings in the highly competitive EP market place.

End users ultimately get the benefit of reduced fuel consumption along with the same levels of reliability, performance and dependability they have come to expect from Perkins engines, all in a more compact, space-saving product. That is a huge advantage in critical applications in urban areas where space is at a premium and a physically smaller generator set can fit in more places while reducing installation, maintenance and running costs.

The TD750’s cooling package - like the engine - comes from Perkins and includes a 1610.34mm x 1651mm (63.4-inch wide x 65-inch) high radiator and belt-driven fan, with critical and hospital grade silencers available as an option.

Other components include a STAMFORD S6 four-pole alternator which delivers rated power at standard 60Hz voltages.

ADE & UKPN ZONING FOR HEAT AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY On Wednesday 5th August, 2020, the ADE hosted a webinar to launch its new paper “Zoning for Heat and Energy Efficiency” in partnership with UK Power Networks, which simultaneously launched its own complementary “Heat Street” Project.

Approaching the decarbonisation of our energy system through “zoning” for heat and energy efficiency would help bring together the fragmented mix of decisions, innovations and demonstrations that are currently commonplace across the UK, and empower local actors to introduce low carbon energy solutions that work for their area.

The event discussed how the principle of zoning could help to lay out a framework for a net zero energy system and featured speakers from across the sector, each with their own take on how zoning could help to empower local authorities and consumers.

The webinar was chaired by Sheryl French, Project Director - Mobilising Local Energy Investment for Cambridgeshire County Council, who opened by laying out some of the problems faced currently by local authorities when considering decarbonisation at a constituency and regional level.

Charlotte Owen, Policy Manager at the ADE, then presented the ADE’s work on zoning and launched the “Heat and Energy Efficiency Zoning: A framework for net zero for new and existing buildings” report. Charlotte discussed how zoning an area would bring with it a set of policies specifically designed to support particular solutions to come forward, through a mix of planning policies, building regulations and funding streams.

Following Charlotte, Zain Habib and Rona Mitchell of UK Power Networks presented a number of practical examples of zoning. This included UKPN’s new “Heat Street” project, which will see UKPN working with local authorities and consumers within its distribution area to identify potential areas for specific low carbon heat and energy efficiency technologies. ,The event was brought to a close by Amy Ritchie, External Affairs Officer at the ADE, who provided a wider context for how zoning fits into the ADE’s wider work.
