NASA has announced the bold objective of returning humans to the Moon by 2023. The Gateway will be an outpost orbiting the Moon which provides vital support for a sustainable, long-term human return to the lunar surface, as well as a staging point for deep space exploration.

Gateway is a mini-space station NASA plans to place in an elliptical orbit around the moon which swings as close as 1,000 miles from the lunar surface about once per week. The Gateway project will act as a stopover and safe haven for astronauts heading for the moon’s surface in NASA’s Artemis lunar program.

The Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) is the first element of Gateway to be launched and will generate all the power and propulsion required over its 15year service life. To achieve these goals, high-power solar arrays and solar electric propulsion systems have been developed.

Gateway will feature a crew of 4 to 6 people in a module which provides living space for long duration missions of 30 to 60 days. All power will provided by a Solar Array and Battery System: 24+ KW continuously for habitation and 39 kW for propulsion.

The electrical power system (EPS) of Gateway feature lightweight Roll Out Solar Arrays (ROSA) with state-of-the-art Z4J solar cells and a central hinge - these will be sized for an end-of-life (EOL) power management and distribution capability of over 55 kilowatts (kW).

The solar array circuits are modular with a scalability and extensibility to support a 300 kW-class mission. NASA Glenn Research Center is managing the PPE contract. Maxar Technologies, Inc. is responsible for fabricating the spacecraft.

In an emergency, Gateway’s PPE can revert to backup batteries which can be used for limited periods when the solar arrays are not generating power.

PPE is an essential piece of the early Artemis puzzle as it will be the only power generating element for the Gateway in Phase 1 and will incorporate a highpower, 50kW-class solar array and electric propulsion (EP) technology and demonstrate integrated SEP end-to-end system performance in space environments, reports NASA.

AKSA Power Generation moved its Turkey production facility to Çerkezköy, Tekirdağ, Turkey, in the last quarter of 2021. The new production facility with a closed area of 40.000 m² will triple the current production capacity in Turkey and has been designed in accordance with industry 4.0 standards, reports the company.

AKSA says it plans to keep on developing custom-made solutions for various industries such as data centres, mining operations, the healthcare sector, the construction industry and telecommunications sites.

The new AKSA manufacturing plant has been equipped with state-of-the-art technology offering increased high tech applications suited to different steps of the production line.

AKSA’s new production facility is not only designed to bring production level to the highest standarts but also to transform the production methods into a truly sustainable model. For example, the painting line in the powder coating process is now more insulated, generating less waste and reducing unnecessary powder coating consumption by applying powder paint more effectively.

Instead of carrying and lifting equipments powered by fossil fuels, new electrically powered carriers have been deployed. Thus, the consumption of unsustainable fuels has been reduced dramatically and the amount of hazardous waste generated due to the maintenance and repair activities minimised.

Today, more than 60% of the electricity consumed in the production process is provided from the renewable energy thanks to solar panels installed in the factory roof.

Founded as an electrical motor factory by Ali Metin Kazanci in 1968, AKSA manufactured its first generator in 1984 and became an expert in machinery and hardware for electrical energy supply in a short amount of time. In 1994, the AKSA community became corporate under the name Kazanci Holding and reorganized, achieving its current structure.

JAPAN PURCHASES SEVEN C65 MICROTURBINE SYSTEMS FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY Capstone Green Energy Corp. has confirmed that its distributor in Japan, Kanamoto, will commission seven C65 microturbine systems by July 2022 at the premises of a Japanese firm operating in the chemical industry.

There are 44 Capstone units currently in operation at the Japanese site and the new systems will replace seven units which have reached the 80,000 hours mark for continuous service. The units were previously covered by a 10-year Factory Protection Plan (FPP) which ended in December 2021.

The C65 is part of the Capstone range of clean and green turbines, which are scalable from 30kW to 30MW and have been designed to operate on a variety of gaseous or liquid fuels. Capstone turbines are said to be ‘the ideal solution for today’s distributed generation needs’.

The new systems will be fuelled by high-pressure natural gas (HPNG) and have been specially designed to provide combined heat and power (CHP) to providing maximum efficiency for the production process. Simultaneously, the waste heat produced by the microturbines will be captured and used for drying processes required by the chemical plant, a site which has been in operation since 2002.

Once shipped, the new systems are expected to be fully-commissioned by July 2022.

This is the only installation in Japan where 44 units have been installed in one single location. Kanamoto’s manager, Atsushi Isono, explains: “The Capstone Green Energy microturbine’s lightweight and compact footprint met the customer’s site requirements while using the clean exhaust gas directly in the drying furnace. This perfectly matches the customer’s thermal requirements. Despite the harsh environment in which this continuous-duty application operates, the customer feels confident in the long-term viability of the system due to the FPP contract in place. The 80,000 hours of operation and FPP contract is what allowed us to win a second end-of life replacement contract.” www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

IN BRIEF NEW GENERATING SOLUTION PROVIDED FOR KEY ENERGY CENTRE

A key project from G&M Tex Generating Solutions has involved the supply of a modular genset plant room to a private biofuel client. This comprised six 400kWe Scania-powered generating sets producing a combined output of 2.4MW. Electricity is generated at low voltage (400v) and is stepped up to high voltage (11KV) aligning with the onsite HV network. The priming fuel used is Red Diesel with Used Cooking Oil (UCO) conforming to EN14214 employed as the main fuel. Due to the strict environmental acoustic requirements, the plantroom noise level was engineered so it does not exceed 65dBA at 1 metre with five gensets running. The G&M Tex scope of supply also included the Switchgear container and high level exhaust stack, while the power generation engines from Scania are based on a robust design.

COVID RESEARCH LABS IN FLORIDA INSTALL SEVEN NEW BACKUP POWER GENSETS IGSA Power has provided Covid Research Laboratories in Orlando, Florida, USA, with 7 X 100 kW @208V EPA Tier 3 diesel gensets for backup power applications.

The generator model chosen for the specification is the IGSA GSJD30100S-UL with a JOHN DEERE 4045HF285 engine and STAMFORD alternator UCI274E & generator controller 7310 DSE. The 4045HF285 4.5L Generator Drive Engine features PowerTech ™ E (Standby: 147 kW (197 hp) @ 1800 rpm & Prime: 134 kW (180 hp) @ 1800 rpm). PowerTech E engines offer electronically controlled fuel systems with improved cold-start performance, precise engine speed control, torque curve shaping and more.

The DSE 7310 MKII unit used in the gensets is a powerful, new generation auto start genset control module with a highly sophisticated level of new features and functions, presented in a DSE user-friendly format.

It is regarded as being suitable for a wide variety of single, diesel or gas genset applications.

PURCHASE OF FILTER SPECIALIST COMPANY COULD HAVE BENEFITS FOR THE EUROPEAN ENGINE SECTOR Heinzmann Holding has bought IFT, an Austrian company based in Uderns which specialises in the development of filters for internal combustion engines.

Founded in 2011, IFT primarily produces oil mist separators and blow-by filters for use in mobile and stationary engines across various sectors, including plant off-highway machinery, power generation and marine.

Products manufactured by IFT use a variety of patented technology developed using bench and field testing. The filters are said to reduce oil consumption and maintenance requirements, together with related system costs.

IFT products also comply with current regulatory requirements.

Markus Gromer, CEO of the Heinzmann Group commented: “Due to the increasing tightening of emission regulations and focused efforts towards increased efficiency, these innovative technologies will be in greater demand worldwide in the future.The products of IFT places great value on maximum environmental protection and resource conservation,” he added.

In 2020 Heinzmann launched an innovatory data logger for the monitoring of exhaust gas emissions, together with CPK Automotive, both members of the Heinzmann Group.

The unit known technically as the the NOx Control Box, monitors emissions according to the requirements of the German Federal ordinance 44th BImSchV for medium-sized combustion plants and internal combustion engines.

THREE 250 KVA DIESEL GENSETS FOR THE WALES AMBULANCE SERVICE, UK

GENESAL ENERGY has supplied three 250 kVA generator sets (GEN275FI) to guarantee the continuous supply of electricity to three UK emergency call centres.

The call centres belong to the Wales Ambulance Service. Every year the personnel take 679,000 calls for over 450,000 incidents in at the three Clinical Contact Centres in Wales. The facilities operate 24-hours-aday, 365-days-a-year.

Avoiding any potential shutdown in the event of a power failure with such an important service is obviously key.

A spokesman commented: “The gensets are there to provide power in situations of mains failure, ensuring the operation of the different

computer equipment of the call centre, which will allow continuous health care.”

Each genset has a 2000-litre base frame integrated fuel tank, including a collection tray, with capacity for 110% of the capacity of the actual fuel tank.

The gensets were designed especially to be adapted to the client’s requirements, which included potential free contacts for the activation of external motorized louvres, and an earthing system comprised of 3 earth points, one on the inside of the canopy and two external points installed on the gensets’ baseframes.

Each 275 kVA unit features an oversized 2,000-litre fuel tank in its baseframe with a leakage tray situated underneath.

610 KVA DIESEL GENSET BOUGHT BY TRACTOR MANUFACTURER IN AFRICA JCB has supplied a 1 x 610 kVA diesel generator (G660QX) with Scania engine to Burkina Faso in West Africa.

The JCB G660QX generator has already been installed and commissioned in an agricultural tractor factory for TROPIC AGROCHEM in Burkina Faso. The JCB Generator is built to the highest specification to deliver outstanding reliability, high performance and increased efficiency, making it the perfect onsite power solution, reports the company. A spokesman commented: “JCB’s 275-720 kVA power range uses the superior Scania engine to provide both fuel optimised and Stage IIIA models.”

HYBRID POWER ADDED TO EXISTING LINE OF GENSETS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR Atlas Copco has introduced the new QAS+ hybrid energy system for the Zenergize range of gensets.

The QAS+ system will feature on the ZBP and ZBC model ranges.

Featuring both diesel generators and li-ion battery packs, the new QAS+ systems can cover peak power and low loads. This is said to extend the working lifetime by 15% and reducing maintenance requirements by 50%.

The system also improves on ROI times, reports the company.

About 70% lighter and more compact than alternatives, gen sets with the QAS+ systems offer users 40,000 hours of uninterrupted operation, with an overload capacity of 150%. They can run autonomously for up to 12 hours, while recharge can be completed in 1.5 hours. Li-ion batteries can operate at temperatures between -20°C and 50°C. Operating in island mode, the units produce no CO2 or noise. In hybrid mode, they optimise noise levels and fuel consumption. Due to this, the units are particularly suited to applications in urban environments with noise level restrictions, events, telecoms and rental applications.

These variants are Stage 5 compliant and the company’s most efficient generators. Compared to a 650 kVA unit, a ZBC250-57 with QAS+ 325 in hybrid mode can reduce fuel consumption by up to 80%. This equates to about 200 tons of CO2 over a working lifetime.

Tony Calippe, marketing manager, Generators Stage V and Tier4f, at Atlas Copco’s Power and Flow division, said: “Our QAS+ generators are fullycompatible with HVO, which almost reaches carbon neutral operation. It is the perfect choice to work in hybrid mode with Atlas Copco’s lithium-ion ESS.”

GENERADORA GATÚN POWER PLANT IN PANAMA BUYS IN GAS TURBINES

NEW SERIES OF STANDBY GASEOUS INDUSTRIAL POWER GENERATORS

GE will deliver power generation equipment capable of generating an expected 670 MW for Generadora Gatún power plant in Panama - it will supply two 7F.05 gas turbines with their A63 generators, two triple pressure reheat Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), and one STF-D600 steam turbine with a A63 steam generator.

The plant, owned and operated by Consortium Group Energy Gas Panama which includes private companies InterEnergy Group and AES Panama, will be built in Telfers Island, near the port of Colón, next to the Panama Canal. The project has an estimated cost of US$1 billion.

GE said the plant is expected to play a crucial role for the diversification of Panama’s energy mix which currently relies heavily on hydroelectric power generation, and its operational flexibility will support additional renewable penetration which will be crucial for Panama’s goal to generate 70% of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, as laid out in the Panama’s National Energy Plan.

In Panama the grid infrastructure still requires highly-efficient and flexible gas turbine technology to support the variable nature of renewables and help us improve the reliability and stability of the country’s electrical system. Generadora Gatún chose two 7F.05 gas turbines with their A63 generators, two triple pressure reheat Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG), and one STF-D600 steam turbine [pictured below] with a A63 steam generator.

The standby gaseous industrial power generators line - the PRAMAC GGW series - is growing.

New models are now available powered by Generac’s spark-Ignited engines. The performances of these richburn engines match those of traditional diesels allowing the usage in most critical and demanding standby applications, says the manufacturer.

These new “GGW” models are available in Natural Gas, LPG, or even Dual-Fuel (NG+LPG). Once considered “alternative fuel”, gas is now becoming the preferred fuel choice in many commercial and industrial verticals.

These include healthcare, data centres, infrastructures, telecommunications and more.

The recent industry shift from diesel to Natural Gas, facilitated by an abundant and growing supply and a cleaner combustion which meets most strict emissions limits, has supported the choice of gas-fuelled generators for many

applications that were traditionally limited to diesel technology.

While providing the highest reliability for backup power, Natural Gas represent a valuable choice of fuel for all those applications that see a constraint with onsite fuel storage.

Using gas removes the risk of spillages and contaminating leaks of diesel, whilst often allowing an easier permitting in those areas that are more environmentally-sensitive.

GENSET POWERS THE ALLIANCE PALACE - GEORGIA’S TOP HOTEL COMPLEX Alliance Group signed an agreement with Teksan Generator to provide uninterrupted power for the Alliance Palace project being built on the Black Sea coast of Adjara in Batumi, Georgia. Alliance Palace, a multifaceted 150-room hotel complex, is said to be ‘the first of its kind in Georgia’. It incorporates the ‘Courtyard by Marriott’ international hotel brand along with 300 high-quality first-class Premium apartments. This is one of 15 such projects undertaken by Alliance Group which has an investment base of US$45 million.

A 1650 kW Teksan diesel generator was used as an alternative power source to secure the Alliance Palace’s alternative power supply during building operations.

Because the hotel was located in the middle of the city, noise from the generator exhaust was minimised using a specially-designed silencer in the exhaust line of the genset. The sound insulation in the genset enclosure was increased to the maximum level achieving a level of 70± 3dBA@7m, making the generator set highly-suitable for this project, says Teksan.

As well as luxurious rooms and apartments, guests at the Alliance Palace can enjoy an underground car park, swimming pool, spa and fitness centre, casino and cafe-restaurants. BIOGAS & NATURAL GAS ENGINES NOW AVAILABLE MAN Engines has released a new biogas and natural gas engine designed for stationary applications. Based on the MAN E3262 (25.8 L), the MAN E3872 is a 29.6 L 12-cylinder four-stroke engine with spark ignition.

The new engine produces 735 kW at 1,500 rpm. Length/width/height of the engine is 1760 x 1245 x 1410 mm and it has a dry weight of 2160 kg. While the new engine uses the same crankcase as the E3262 (in production since 2010), the bore has been increased to 138 mm (+6 mm) and the stroke has increased to 165 mm (+7 mm).

Some unique features have been incorporated in the engine to achieve this power output, says MAN.These include the single turbo concept, which is said to have had a significant impact on engine efficiency through fine-tuning the inlet and outlet guide units (diffuser and nozzle ring). This allows the turbo to operated at optimal efficiency. The engine also uses a new piston bowl design to help accelerate combustion and increase efficiency. The pre-chamber spark plugs, specifically adapted for the combustion chamber, help the mix to combust in several areas, which helps to reduce NOx output. A hydraulic valve lash adjuster makes checks and adjustments of the valve train unnecessary.

Other key modifications include control times based on the Atkinson cycle, which is unusual for a stationary engine.The natural gas and biogas variants of the E3872 engine respectively produce 250 mg and 500 mg NOx. An aftertreatment system (such as SCR) has the potential to reduce this to 100 mg.

MAN reports that the efficiency of this engine makes it ideal suitable for applications where ‘the focus is on the production of electricity and additional generation of heat’, such as in gensets and CHP systems.

A new 1300 kW Ultra-Low Emissions Package from Aggreko is said to reduce up to 99% of all controlled emissions from the average generator exhaust stream.

According to the company this innovation will fit any project situation: the Ultra-Low Emissions Package has been designed to meet strict U.S. federal air quality restrictions for faster deployment and long-term use while - at the same time - significantly reducing environmental impact.

The system’s emission levels are certified to be 90% lower than the best reciprocating engine and turbine available on the market, and 99% lower than the federal limits, the company said. Aggreko’s Ultra-Low Emissions Package has been designed to provide 1300 kW of continuous power output and is equipped with a selective catalyst reducer (SCR) and an oxidation catalyst which converts carbonmonoxide into carbon-dioxide in a highly-efficient combination.

Ltd., announced it has acquired a majority share in ELEO Technologies B.V., a battery technology company based in Helmond, the Netherlands. Yanmar acquired its stake in ELEO through its subsidiary Yanmar Europe B.V., by means of a series of related transactions including a full exit of early-stage investor Lumipol Group.

By integrating ELEO’s advanced, scalable, and modular battery technology, Yanmar said it will further its electrified powertrain capabilities with customized solutions for off-road applications.

“ELEO co-founder Bas Verkaik commented: “We are thrilled to partner with Yanmar. A Washington, D.C. university will install a microgrid on its campus in an effort to improve resilience, produce clean energy, and reduce its energy costs.

Scale Microgrid Solutions and Urban Ingenuity will develop the project for Gallaudet University, a leading institution for deaf and hard of hearing students.

The project will feature 2.5 MW of solar PV panels on campus rooftops and parking garages, a 1.2 MW/2.5MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system from Tesla, and a 4.5 MW combined cooling, heat, and power system.

The project is expected to go online by autumn 2023.

The microgrid is intended to provide nearly all of Gallaudet’s electricity needs during an outage, the parties said in a press release.

Solar arrays within the microgrid will allow around 1,500 small businesses and households to take advantage of the benefits of clean energy through D.C.’s community solar program.

Potomac Electric Power Co. will track electricity produced by the microgrid’s solar arrays.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY GETS NEW CHP PLANT IN WEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA, USA Following its recent installation a 16 MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant is now fully operational on the southern edge of Purdue University’s flagship campus in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The gas-powered plant was built and is owned and operated by Duke Energy. It produces electricity for the company’s Indiana customers and provides thermal energy in the form of steam for Purdue’s heating and hot water needs.

Through an approved agreement, Duke Energy will sell to Purdue the steam the plant produces. The plant can produce up to 150,000 pounds of steam per hour, according to the utility.

By using steam from the new CHP plant, the university will have more operational flexibility. In the event of an electric grid disruption, the new plant could provide emergency power to help keep the campus running. In combined heat and power, or cogeneration plants, heat that would otherwise be wasted in the production of electricity is captured and used. Because of this, CHP plants require less fuel to produce the same amount of total energy, resulting in reduced environmental emissions.

Duke Energy reports that the new plant is projected to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by approximately 50,000 metric tons.

Purdue University is a world-renowned, public research university which advances discoveries in science, technology, engineering and maths.

NIGERIA POWERPLANT GETS UPGRADE Ansaldo Energia has won a contract to handle a major overhaul of the 435 MW Geregu Power power plant based in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, Nigeria.

The three-year contract with Geregu Power Plc is valued at €32 million and includes the supply of spare parts which will be entirely manufactured by Ansaldo Energia in Italy, and the maintenance services, which will be performed by its subsidiary Ansaldo Energia Nigeria based in Lagos. Activities will start in early 2023.

The Geregu Power Plant was built by the federal government of Nigeria and commissioned into service in February 2007. The power plant consists of three simple cycle natural gas fired Siemens STG5-2000E gas turbine generator units with a 435MW installed capacity. The Turbine units are GT11, GT12, and GT13 and each is designed to produce 145 MW at 15.75 kV, stepped up to 330 kV via a 173.6MVA power transformer and provides on average 10% of the total electricity generated in Nigeria.

The SGT5-2000E gas turbine is a proven, robust engine for the 50 Hz market, used in simple cycle or combined cycle processes, with or without combined heat and power. It is widely regarded as being suitable for all load ranges, including peak load, and offers outstanding fuel flexibility: You can use low-calorific gases, gases containing CO2, H2S and N2 or crude oil and other liquid fuels with high viscosity. In addition, it provides low NO2 emissions, even in the part load range.

All maintenance services will provided by Ansaldo Energia with co-operation between the two companies.

$100 MILLION FOR ZEROEMISSIONS PROJECTS $100 million investment from SK Group has been awarded to 8 Rivers Capital to focus on decarbonization and zero-emissions projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

North Carolina-based 8 Rivers develops zero-carbon technologies such as hydrogen, carbon capture and biomass carbon removal. It jointly owns NET Power, whose systems burn natural gas to fuel a supercritical CO2 cycle which generates electricity.

The technology reuses most of the carbon dioxide produced and captures the rest, meaning it emits virtually nothing into the atmosphere. NET Power has said its plants should cost no more to build and operate than a traditional natural gas plant.

SWEDEN’S ZERO-EMISSION HYDROGEN TURBINE CENTRE PRODUCES RESULTS First begun in 2018, the Zero Emission Hydrogen Turbine Centre, a Swedish hydrogen power plant project, is integrating gas turbines, renewables, energy storage and electrolysis in a flexible energy system of the future.

Siemens Energy’s Åsa Lyckström explains: “Sometimes you get to see the future happening right in front of your eyes – and it’s even better if you can actively help shape it. At Siemens Energy in Finspång, Sweden, we’ve been working at the Zero Emission Hydrogen Turbine Center (ZEHTC) since 2018.

“It’s a partially EU-funded demonstration plant designed to explore how green hydrogen can be produced and used for power generation and storage for industry and municipalities. The concept is simple: using solar power and excess energy from testing mid-size industrial turbines, batteries are charged and hydrogen is produced.”

Lyckström says the batteries help with operational flexibility and the hydrogen is then compressed and stored. When needed, it is used to power the gas turbine tests again. This creates a closed loop plant of the future, integrating major building blocks of Europe’s energy future.

“The ZEHTC shows how Siemens Energy is driving innovation to support the development of a sustainable and flexible energy system,” explains Lyckström.

WEG has just announced its plans to build a new electric motor factory in Santo Tirso, Portugal.

The company intends to invest 23.5 million euros to build 22,600 m² of manufacturing facilities in the same area where WEG already has a 16,300 m² low voltage industrial motor factory.

WEG´s plan with the new unit is to expand the production of large electric motors and transfer its factory located in Maia to Santo Tirso, centralizing all operations in a single manufacturing site.

D

ata centres play a fundamental role in the functioning of businesses in today’s connected world. Servers and devices for storing, processing and distributing large amounts of data are housed here, and users of this data must be able to access it remotely and in real time at any time.

It is understandable that a stable power supply as well as reliable cooling of the servers are two of the major challenges that must be carefully considered during construction and operation.

One of the world’s largest mobile communications providers, China United Network Communications Group Co, or China Unicom for short, has taken a new path. Among other things, the company operates a cloud data center in Deqing, in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. Located around 200 kilometres southwest of the Shanghai metropolis, it is the first data centre of a communications operator in China to rely on natural gas-based combined cooling, heating and power supply systems.

The core generating facilities of the project are seven MWM TCG 2032 V16 gas-fired generator sets. This is the largest genset manufactured in Germany under the MWM brand and provides stable power and heat supply in projects worldwide.

The project is designed based on the principle of “determining power generation based on cold capacity”, and uses natural gas to fuel the MWM gasfired generator sets to generate electricity for the grid.

The high-temperature flue gas and cylinder liner water discharged from the generator sets enters a lithium bromide absorption unit to produce chilled water for air-conditioning purposes.

Meanwhile, a chilled water storage tank operates online in real time as a redundant configuration of the chilled water system to ensure the refrigeration unit operates as normal. The system can provide a highly reliable and continuous power supply, and also provides effective cooling for the data centre.

The seven generator sets generate 225 million kWh of electricity and provide 228 million kWh of cooling power per year, saving a significant amount of energy and substantially reducing emissions.

the TEM (Total Electronic Management). The new, upgraded wastegate in particular ensures a more efficient operation with changing conditions.

This is also the case when the gas composition is fluctuating – thanks to fast response times due to the temperature monitoring for each cylinder. TEM not only controls the engine, but the entire system, including heat extraction.

The high-pressure turbocharger A140 with an improved wastegate allows operation with a broader air intake temperature range and up to higher altitudes.

The energy needs of the data centre (DC) industry continue to grow at a brisk pace. In the past, preferred DC locations were near inexpensive, reliable power sources.

Today, such locations are more difficult to come by, and pressure is mounting to find alternate solutions that will be less demanding on the grid, particularly when electrical demand is high. Critical facilities have more choices than ever for ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH A KEY GLOBAL GENSET COMPANY

A

n Italian national, Giorgio Paris, trained as a mechanical engineer and began his career in 1979 as a salesman with Fiat Powertrain Technologies.

Three years later, he moved to Mercedes Benz, where he became an area manager within the trucks, special vehicles and components division. In 1984, he began working for the Same Lamborghini Group as a manager of domestic market sales and, later on, of the entire sales function, including exports.

In January 1997, Giorgio was appointed industrial sales manager at Volvo Penta Italy, subsequently taking on responsibility for sales in Southern Europe in 2000.

In 2004, he became the industrial segment head of Region Europe, and in 2006 he was appointed president of Region International.

Last year, he became President of Industrial. This followed a re-organisation where the company moved from a regional to a segmented structure, dedicated to the industrial and marine businesses.

Giorgio’s focus is primarily on sales, strategy implementation and business development. Here, Giorgio offers some unique insights into the market sector: Q: How significant are the new developments to the new D13 power node, the TAD1346GE 500 kVA and the D8 - do you expect these to have a major impact within the industry amongst buyers, specifiers and users?

A: The D8 offers industry-leading power density and a compact size, combined with low fuel consumption and noise levels. It has been designed for quick, easy and economical installation as well as ease of operation and

maintenance. The new D13 brings similar advantages to the D8, it’s reliable, compact and fuel efficient.

We worked hard to make a product that supports our customers to become more competitive and this has been very well received.

At Volvo Penta, all our engines comply with a minimum of Stage II/ Tier 2 emissions regulations and above, so both the D8 and the D13 meet these standards without compromising on performance and efficiency. Both engines were also developed with new, improved cooling packages, high AOT to meet demands in hot climates and an optional visco fan for even better fuel efficiency.

Q: It is often said that Volvo primarily targets the spectrum of top displacement engines (e.g 16-litres) where Europe benefits from high power engines. Do you agree?

A: As part of the Volvo Group, we have a strong knowledge of complex and challenging installations and thereby a mindset to always develop engines with ease of installation in mind. This is a mindset we have across all our engine platforms, not just the D16.

Q: Can you confirm that it is Volvo’s policy not to directly compete with customers as genset manufacturers?

A: Yes, for power generation applications Volvo Penta is an independent engine supplier, meaning we don’t supply complete gensets.

This means that Volvo Penta does not compete with its customers – we partner with them. The strength of Volvo Penta lies with its highperformance engines, powertrain/ propulsion systems and all the surrounding equipment. Our

customers are experts within the genset business, by focussing on our own core competences we can make something incredible together.

In Southern Europe there are lots of genset manufacturers, so naturally this area is an important region for Volvo Penta and will continue to be so.

Other areas where we have a strong presence in the market include the US, South America and China. Asia and the Middle East are growing markets and are important for our future growth. Generally speaking, the demand for energy and electricity is increasing everywhere so Volvo Penta products can contribute and will be of great importance in all markets.

Q: The 16-litre range is very important for Volvo Penta. Is this still true?

A: The D16 is very important for Volvo Penta, as are our other engines in the range. The robust D16 is industry-leading when it comes to power density and it delivers excellent fuel efficiency.

Q: Can you outline Volvo Penta’s current and future plans collaboration ideas and and pilot projects?

A: Volvo Penta will continue to improve and stay competitive with todays’ technology – diesel

As part of the Volvo Group, Volvo Penta is working with multiple tracks and scenarios with the aim of becoming 100% fossil-free by 2050 in line with the Science Based Target commitment.

Q: How committed is Volvo Penta to hydrogen?

A: Cellcentric is a part of an industry-first commitment to accelerate the development and use of hydrogen-based fuel cells for heavy-duty commercial vehicles and non-automotive applications. It’s a 50:50 joint venture between Volvo Group and Daimler Truck AG, with the ambition of becoming leading global manufacturers of fuel cell systems, enabling the world to take a major step towards climate-neutral and sustainable transportation. This is promising technology for Volvo Penta industrial customers, and we are seeing an iincreased interest in the market and amongst customers.

The pace of introducing this green hydrogen technology is very much dependent on the availability of carbon neutral hydrogen in the world and we see different strategies are being taken by governments right now.

The availability of CO2-friendly hydrogen is a determining factor of when this can be a viable option.

But there are a huge number of initiatives for this around the globe already so there is definitely potential in this area.

Q: How close are we to seeing Volvo Penta Biofuel and hybrid engines for power generation?

“

A: Powered by alternative fuels such as sustainable biofuels and hydrogen, the combustion engine will continue to play a significant role for our customers’ ability in reducing carbon emissions (CO2). We have high expectations for the use of renewable fuels derived from vegetable or organic origin in regions where a sustainable supply can be provided. Since 2016, all our combustion engines can be run on HVO and this is something we see happening a lot in the Nordic countries particularly. Our engines can currently use up to 30% biofuel, depending on what emission classification the engine is.

Q: What changes have you overseen in driving a transition to more sustainable genset products?

A: I would say that the biggest change relates to more stringent emission requirements. Emissions legislation has helped to drive development and guide us on our journey to reduce the environmental footprint of our products and operations. Thanks to a greater global awareness of climate change and sustainability there has been an acceleration when it comes to transformation and new technologies over the last few years and, with the Volvo Group and Volvo Penta’s adoption of Science

Based Targets last year, I see this transformation intensifying.

Our aim is to become 100% fossil-free by 2050 and we hope to reach net-zero value chain emissions by 2040. This will be our biggest transformation.

Q: Will there always be a need for power generation in Europe - and do you feel profits for the industry soon be on the rise again?

A: In general, the business climate is positive despite the wider global issues.

Global demand for energy is running at a high pace – and it will continue to do so in the coming years.

The need for a stable electricity supply is becoming more important as demand increases – so we will see an even greater need for secure and robust systems with increased capabilities.

Looking ahead I’m optimistic, demand is good and I think it will continue in this direction.

In the more developed markets demand will be driven by new technology, and in the rest of the world it will simply be driven by the demand for energy.

The walk-in PODS have generous spacing with a 4m width and height for the base module.

The enclosures offer optimal access to different elements of the diesel genset allowing personnel to perform all operations and maintenance tasks with ease.

Single swing doors with locks and anti-panic bars facilitate daily access into the enclosure.

A push-button located near the access doors controls the interior lighting system.

Adherence to noise standards was a critical design consideration, with 85 dB(A) sound reduction at 1m, with 75 and 65 dB(A) configurations also available.

Soundproofing panels are made of mineral wool with an M1-class fire rating covered by glass fibre and metal sheet.

VIENNA EXPANDS ITS UNDERGROUND POWER CAPABILITIES WITH A SERIES 956 GENERATOR SET

F

ive mtu-powered generator sets are successfully in service in subterranean Vienna. A sixth is now to be added, reports the company.

In the world’s major cities, underground railways are fundamental to green mobility. As such, they are being expanded in many places, including Vienna, where a new line – the U5 – is being built.

With further subterranean stops, the city’s inhabitants gain more points of access to the service. And to ensure that the lights never go out in the underground and that people can exit safely in the rare case of a power outage, five emergency gensets are in service there, soon to become six.

An mtu Series 956 unit is an imposing sight. Stand next to it and its sheer proportions – 3 m high, 5 m long, 2 m wide and 21.5 tons in weight – make you feel like you’re looking up at a giant.

“Sure, it’s a huge engine, but in terms of the output it’s capable of it’s pretty compact,” points out Giovanni Coiro, Sales Manager Power Generation at Rolls-Royce Power Systems. That output is 5,000 kW, which, spread over 16 cylinders, means the 956 engine boasts an incredible power-to-weight ratio.

“This is exactly the reason we want such engines in our emergency generator sets,” said Gerald Leutgeb, head of the Electrical Plant division of Wiener Linien, Vienna’s public transport operator.

Five mtu engines are in service in the engine rooms deep in the belly of the Viennese underground. A sixth is scheduled for next year.

This unit has already left the Rolls-Royce factory in Friedrichshafen and is currently on the site of mtu sales partner K&W Drive Systems, who is working with Austrian electric power generation expert ELIN to integrate it into the plant as a whole. The new emergency generator set is to be ready for service towards the end of the year.

Together, the generator sets will be capable of delivering 30,000 kW of power to keep lighting installations, escalators, control and signaling systems and information systems fed with energy should the public power grid fail.

Lifts, for example, will move to a predefined level and open their doors automatically to allow passengers to exit while the station lights remain fully on.

All this ensures that people are safely evacuated from the underground, after which the metro stations can be closed.

To supply enough electrical power to each underground station, up to 2 MW is required per service line. If this is not enough to operate the trains themselves, these come to a standstill in the event of

an outage, with only certain units staying operative to bring passengers to the next station for their safe evacuation.

Most engines installed in emergency gensets hardly ever need to go onstream. But when the situation does arise, they have to be able to step in immediately.

In Vienna, the mtu engines can ramp up to maximum power output in less than ten seconds. To check that they’re always operational, test runs are performed on a monthly basis, giving the engines the opportunity for a few hours to show their capabilities.

“We’ve been lucky enough never to have suffered a serious power outage,” reports Gerald Leutgeb.

“But if it does happen, I have 100% faith in the engines.” And if there does happen to be a hitch at one of the gensets, the others can switch in, since all six are connected. In other words, if one generator set fails or is being serviced, the others can come on stream.

All of which means that the Vienna metro’s many passengers can relax in the knowledge that they will always be able to exit the underground safely should the mains power be disrupted.

In total the Vienna subway or metro system covers five metro lines: the U1, U2, U3, U4, and U6, with more than 100 stations. Vienna itself is Austria’s most populous city, with about 2 million inhabitants (2.6

million within the metropolitan area or nearly one third of the country’s population. It is the 6th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union.

1,400 KVA DIESEL GENSETS POWERING THE ROVANIEMI LAPLAND HOSPITAL IN FINLAND

wo 1,400 kVA diesel generators with Baudouin engines have been supplied to the Rovaniemi Lapland Hospital in Finland by Voimalaite Services Oy. A spokesman for Baudouin commented: “Because hospitals are still under unprecedented pressure to provide care for patients across the world, it is Baudouin’s responsibility to support them with quality power systems.”

Baudouin designed and produced the PowerKit engines to power the Lapland Hospital in the City of Rovaniemi, one of the northernmost cities in the world.

The manufacturing stage involved a special design process to meet customers’ specific needs.

“Thanks to our local OEM Voimalaite Services Oy, we quickly provided: Two Baudouin 12M33G1400/5 PowerKit engines at1400 Kva + Control room + 2 transformers. These two twin PowerKit high horsepower engines have a very good step load acceptance performance making them a great solution for such a critical application. This paralleling application allows both engines to work together, or one to be the backup of the other. The synchronisation time is very short meeting our requirements,” commented the spokesman.

The Lapland Hospital District consists of a public healthcare network is currently responsible for the care of the 120,000 inhabitants of the Lapland region in Northern Finland.

DATA CENTRE IN CRAIOVA, ROMANIA, INVESTS IN HYDROGEN-READY GENSETS

nopf & Wallisch (K&W) has provided 20V 4000 L64 FNER gas engines for hydrogen-ready generator sets sold to a Romanian data centre provider.Cloud service provider.

ClusterPower is developing a US$43 million data centre campus near the southern city of Craiova and has specified backup power equipment.

The 273,000 sq. m campus will scale to a power output of 200 MW, once all five data centres being planned come onstream in 2025, said ClusterPower.

Rolls-Royce and its distributor partner Knopf & Wallisch (K&W) supplied three mtu customised and containerised combined cooling, heat and power plant (CCHP) trigeneration units.

The 20V 4000 L64 FNER gas engines have been designed for quick ramp-up and ramp-down and are said to offer a wide-range of load operations.

The gensets are ‘hydrogen-ready,’ with the capacity to use blends of 25% hydrogen along with natural gas and also be upgraded to pure hydrogen engines at a future date.

The first of the five data centres has opened already.

Here, the CCHP units supply electricity, heat and cooling for the building and the infrastructure.

Employing the gas gensets as prime power producing electricity while using the main grid as backup is said to be their ‘unique selling point’ (UPS). A highly efficient solution has been applied to capture most of the exhaust heat from the system with conversion chillers.

The new Series 4000 gas genset offers the highest power density in its class. Designed with cutting-edge technology, the new Series 4000 natural gas genset is optimized for maximum performance and low emissions to deliver an economical, reliable, and sustainable source of power.

The new hydrogen-ready gas genset at the Romanian data centre near Craiova offers the highest power density and the highest kilowatt-persquare-foot ratio in its class.

The genset achieves efficiencies of up to 44.4%, delivering a significant improvement in fuel/energy utilisation at high temperatures.

All the H2 gas genset components are fine-tuned to ensure long service lives and deliver maximum uptime.

Long service intervals and easy-to-maintain components mean low maintenance costs. Fast availability of spare parts and low engine oil consumption also help keep lifecycle costs lower overall, with cylinder head lifetimes

potentially equivalent to TBO. A significant reduction in nitrous oxide emissions makes the gas genset a perfect fit for independent power producers (IPP) and combined heat and power (CHP) applications.

With part-load performance down to 30% and a fast start option, its operational flexibility is also said to be ideal for demand response applications.

The genset offers low emissions - 250 mg/Nm³, 500mg/Nm³, (@5% O2)NOx – are achieved without external aftertreatment, even meeting the new expected German unburned THC emissions legislation (<1300mg@5% O2).

In the 20V 4000 L64 FNER gas engine the Ignition systems for individual cylinders allow for the most efficient level of operation for all cylinders, even with variable CH4 content. The ignition system gives information on the state of the spark plugs.

The Heat Recovery Unit uses a well-proven design which perfectly suits the genset and provides the basis for optimised auxiliary efficiencies. The unit is fully integrated in the automation concept and is both safe and certified (CE).

The system is equipped with a data logger providing access to digital solutions, including remote monitoring, fast and reliable service support and – coming soon – further features such as predictive failure prevention and operational optimisation.

All units have a Motor interface panel (MIP) with stand-alone Module Control (MMC). The MMC provides all the functions necessary for controlling the system. 5MW STANDBY GENSET DEVELOPED ESPECIALLY FOR MILAN COVID HOSPITAL, ITALY

S

an Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy, has bought a 5MW standby genset developed by Green Power and Perkins.

Perkins has provided the power-dense, economical and dependable 4012- 46TAG2A temperate engine the client needed.

For any hospital, a reliable power supply is nothing short of a lifesaver. If power drops out from the local grid, the problem needs to be resolved instantaneously with a seamless switch to standby. San Raffaele Hospital, in the Italian city of Milan, required this exact solution – a robust generator set capable of delivering the 5MW of back-up power necessary to cover all its critical loads during a power cut. The hospital also needed the unit to be compact enough to fit inside a 30 ft container.

ELECTRICITY MARKET REFORM MUST SUPPORT EXPANSION FO DECENTRALISED ENERGY

The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement that the Government will undertake a comprehensive Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA).

It is becoming increasingly clear that the UK’s current electricity markets cannot get the country to net zero.

They cannot support the vast expansion of renewable electricity generation that is needed and they can’t bring forward the necessary levels of flexibility to help balance the accounts and arrive at the most cost-effective, zero carbon system.

This review is a once in a generation opportunity to build a system that truly works for users and the planet.

Whilst there will be difficult compromises to be made going forward, it is crucial that users and their contribution to the system are placed at the heart of these reforms.

The UK should emerge from them with users, from households to industry, being able to provide flexibility to balance peaks and troughs in wind and solar generation, and be fairly remunerated for doing this.

More than that, the system should drive towards efficiency at all levels – whether it be individuals reducing their own consumption or businesses investing in primary energy.

Finally, as the nation decarbonises its heating, these reforms should ensure that households and businesses can make the right choice to electrify their heating, either through individual heat pumps or collective heat network systems.

Lily Frencham, CEO of the ADE, said: “It’s time to design an energy system fit for the future – the upcoming review of how the electricity market is run is the chance to make sure this happens.”

However, to help us on our Net Zero journey, we would have liked to have seen more to encourage the delivery of the cheapest forms of renewable energy, onshore wind and solar, as well as more on driving greater energy efficiency.

“We must not forget that it will take time for any new Strategy to deliver results – for energy security, our Net Zero targets, or on affordability.

Nevertheless, the Strategy outlines a positive and proactive intent.”

HE M Group Services company has signed a letter of intent to cut down its carbon emissions, supporting the Science Based Targets initiative.

Following the announcement of M Group Services’ leading ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) rating in February, we are pleased to report the Board has committed to join the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), supporting efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C and cut carbon emissions.

The SBTi targets provide a clearly defined pathway for businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero before 2050.

This commitment from M Group Services is one of many actions being taken to act on the results of its ESG rating and enhance the Group’s environmental sustainability. As part of this process, M Group Services will begin to develop and implement near-term science-based emissions reduction targets.

Following successful completion of a near-term target, M Group Services will establish a long-term SBTi net-zero target.

These targets will focus on a reduction across all three scopes of greenhouse gas emissions. Emission categories are represented by three scopes of greenhouse gas (GHG) sources, as defined by the internationally adopted standard on corporate reporting developed by the GHG Protocol. Scope 1 covers the Group’s direct emissions, for example emissions of company vehicles. Scope 2 includes all energy-related indirect emissions, such as purchased electricity. Scope 3 emissions are those generated from the Group’s value chain, for example when buying products from suppliers.

Andrew Hunt, Director of ESG & Innovation at M Group Services, said: “Carbon reduction is fundamental to the sustainability of both our business, and our shared natural environment. Setting clear and achievable science-based targets will provide a pathway to achieving this. We are pleased to announce our commitment to set clear science-based targets to reduce our carbon output and support our clients’ growing carbon reduction ambitions. We are confident these targets will leave positive, lasting effects on our environment, people and communities.

Andrew concludes: “Throughout this target setting process, our team of experts will be working with all M Group Services operating businesses to assess how the carbon output of all our operations can be minimised.

NEW BATTERY PACK DEVELOPMENT

THE DECS-450 DIGITAL EXCITATION CONTROL SYSTEM Basler Electric is marketing its next generation of Excitation System, the advanced DECS-450 Digital Excitation Control System.

The DECS-450 is said to offer numerous technological advancements for the control of excitation and monitoring of synchronous generators and motors.

Here are some of its many exciting features such as enhanced voltage regulation accuracy at 0.10%, five modes of excitation control, powerful industry leading BESTCOMSPlus® PC Software and Integrated programmable logic.

Other features include integrated auto synchroniser with voltage matching, Automatic PID selection via our Auto tuning function and enhanced communication capabilities. The design includes High-end generator and motor protection schemes, Configurable protection to allow for easy development of other protection elements and Load Sharing via Ethernet communications.

One of the advanced features is a pPower system stabiliser with phase plot compensation, backward compatibility for DECS-400 and DECS-300 systems and an automatic conversion of DECS-400 PID/Gain Settings to the DECS-450. The Analog and digital I/O is easily expanded via modular components. With its simplified style chart, which defines the features of a standard controller, it is easy to select a technology-leading excitation system, reports the manufacturer. www.basler.com NEW HEAT ENGINE IS VIEWED AS ‘GAME-CHANGER’ US-based MIT MIT and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have announced the design of a heat engine with zero moving parts which can convert heat to electricity with a greater than 40% efficiency.

Researchers say the solution outperforms traditional steam turbines and could form the basis for a fully decarbonised power grid.

On average, steam turbines reliably convert about 35% of a heat source into electricity, with about 60% representing the highest efficiency of any heat engine to date. However, the system’s moving parts are not able to withstand any temperatures higher than about 1982.2°C but this new development is said to be a ‘game-changer’.

The MIT and NREL heat engine is a thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cell, similar to a solar panel’s photovoltaic cells. The TPV cell passively captures high-energy photons from a white-hot heat source and converts them into electricity. The design can generate electricity from a heat source between roughly 1871°C to 2371°C. The researchers plan to incorporate the TPV cell into a grid-scale thermal battery system. The system would absorb excess energy from the sun and store that energy in heavily insulated banks of hot graphite. When the energy is needed, such as on overcast days, TPV cells would convert the heat into electricity, and send the energy to a power grid. www.nrel.gov 36

Flux Power designs and manufacturers lithium-ion battery packs in 24, 36, 48 and 80v configurations with various capacities depending on application, - the company recently developed high-voltage 400v battery pack for a customer who wished to use it in an autonomous capacity.

The company said the batteries can be fast-charged completely and handle ultra-fast charging up to 1C (a full charge in one hour). The battery packs maintain their performance levels under discharge rates as high as 3C continuous (full discharge in 1/3 an hour).

The company product range includes the M24 lithium-ion battery pack, designed to power end-and centre-riders used in warehouses and distribution centres.

It uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry to deliver 24v, 420 Ah (10 kWh) and rated for 3500 cycles. It is UL Listed and compatible with forklift OEM interface requirements, including CANbus, and is available with the company’s own SkyBMS telematics option.

The LiFT Pack S-Series of batteries has also helped it win new contracts with manufacturers. The LiFT Pack X48, for example, is rated for 630 Ah (30.2 kWh). Each battery pack gets an integrated UL Listed BMS (battery management system), designed and developed in-house to be fully optimised for each application. The company said its patented software ensures the battery always provides peak performance (even at low charge levels), which it said translates to longer run times between charges and a longer total battery lifespan.
