Has COVID-19 really had a profound impact on our grid systems? Broadly - yes. That’s a the thrust of a new report published by the Wärtsilä Energy Transition Lab. The Lab’s analysis suggests that coal-based power generation has fallen by over a quarter (25.5%) across the European Union (EU) and within the UK in the first three months of 2020, compared to 2019, as a result of the response to Covid-19, with renewable energy reaching a 43% share.

The impact has been even more significant in the last month, with coal generation collapsing by almost one third (29%) between 10th March and 10th April compared to the same period in 2019, making up only 12% of total EU and UK generation.

The result has been an unprecedented fall in carbon emissions from the power sector, with emission intensity falling by almost 20% (19.5%) compared to the same 10th March to 10th April period last year.

The analysis comes from the Wärtsilä Energy Transition Lab, a new free-touse data platform developed by the company to help the industry, policy makers and the public understand the impact of Covid-19 on European electricity markets and analyse what this means for the future design and operation of its energy systems. The goal is to help accelerate the transition to 100% renewables, reports the WETL. Björn Ullbro, Vice President for Europe & Africa at Wärtsilä Energy Business, said: “The impact of the Covid-19 crisis on European energy systems is extraordinary. We are seeing levels of renewable electricity that some people believed would cause systems to collapse, yet they haven’t – in fact they are coping well. The question is, what does this mean for the future?

The loadbanks are being used to simulate a load, and test every part of the system, from the switchgear to voltage regulators, alternators to electrical cabling and fuel systems.

IN BRIEF DEVELOPMENT FOR COAL-FIRED POWER PLANT IN NEW MEXICO A mielange of large-scale battery storage units, new natural gas plants and solar arrays and battery could be ratifiied by state regulators to replace the San Juan Generating Station near Farmington in the US. A coal-fired power plant destined to close n 2022, the San Juan plant, the future of the site is mired in controversy. The local authorities believe the economic effects of new construction and operations with a replacement plant would likely benefit San Juan County as well as McKinley and Rio Arriba counties.

The utility estimates that the cost of the larger hybrid facility in McKinley County will certainly total around $360 million.

UK ENERGY USE UP BY 30% DURING THE DAY, REVEALS NEW ANALYSIS BY POWER COMPANIES Home energy use is up by up to 30% during the middle of the day, new analysis by energy firms reveals. Much of the population is working from home and schools have closed, meaning home computers and televisions are busier than ever.

The highest peak is at lunchtimes, when cooking is added to the power consumption of working from home. ut overall, the country is actually using less energy because of businesses being closed.

The National Grid reports that morning and afternoon electricity demand is down by nearly 20%. But most of that is due to lower demand from large, industrial users like factories.

“Households are consuming 21% less electricity than usual at 07:30, as fewer people commute to work, and are taking back the time to sleep later instead,” a spokeswoman for Bulb Energy said, based on data from more than 2,000 smart meters. Ovo Energy is seeing similar results from a sample of 230,000 customers.

“Morning routines are less structured and therefore the peak has reduced by up to 20%, as many people are working from home or not working at all,” a spokeswoman said.

“We are seeing big changes in the way people consume energy during the lockdown period.”

Cummins is using labour and equipment typically used for producing diesel engine filters for gensets to manufacture high efficiency particulate filters for use in 3M’s Powered Air Purifying Respirators.

The additional filters are needed as 3M has ramped up production of PAPRs to meet a surge in demand for personal protective equipment due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

3M’s powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs) are an important piece of personal protective equipment for front-line healthcare workers.

PAPRs use a battery-powered blower which sends filtered air into a hood or head top which covers the head or face, and can provide increased levels of respiratory protection, especially for critical healthcare situations such as aerosol generating procedures. PAPRs may also be more comfortable to wear for those who need respiratory protection for long periods of time.

Guided by a 3M design, employees in Cummins’ facility in Neillsville, Wisconsin, will use existing equipment typically used for producing diesel engine filters to make the PAPR ones. After assembly and testing, the filters will be sent to 3M’s plant located in Valley, Nebraska, where the company’s PAPRs are manufactured.

ENGIE UK IS BEHIND THE ELECTRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE EXCEL/NHS NIGHTINGALE HOSPITAL

ENGIE UK’s energy centre team has been working 24/7 at ExCeL in London Docklands to put extra resilience in place to ensure critical power, heating & cooling systems remain operational for the new NHS Nightingale coronavirus treatment facility, which will provide up to 4,000 crucial beds.

BDP has described the ‘unprecedented’ challenge of helping convert the ExCeL Exhibition Centre in London’s Docklands into a vast temporary hospital for the coronavirus crisis.

The UK’s second-biggest practice has been working under main contractor CFES to convert the 115,000m² conference centre into a field hospital.

The centre has previously been used as an Olympic venue and to host a G20 summit.

It is now fully reconfigured to accommodate two hospital wards with ‘minimum building intervention’.

BDP architect director Paul Johnson said that the NHS Nightingale is the first of a number of crisis centres planned around the UK, designed to deal with a surge of patients suffering from coronavirus.

BDP said it had been approached by other NHS trusts around the country to work on other field hospitals. The ExCeL Centre’s existing electrical infrastructure has been modified to increase the resilience, UPS and temporary generators.

The temporary electrics used for exhibitions has been used to feed 3m sections of bedhead dado trunking which have been prefabricated by electricians on site.

The NHS Nightingale Hospital was a ‘monumental team effort’ between a number of clinicians, consultants, contractors, the ExCeL FM team and personnel from the British Army.

Constant power supplies are required for the Ward areas, and for the HVAC systems.

A key treatment strategy includes the use of ventilators for Covid-19 patient care.

Other areas with high power demands are the Autopsy Rooms and Morgues.

FUJAIRAH F3 IPP PROJECT FOR ABU DHABI The Marubeni Corporation and Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) have agreed a deal to develop the Fujairah F3 independent power producer (IPP) project. When completed this will be the biggest independent thermal power plant in the UAE. The Fujairah F3 IPP project includes the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant, together with associated infrastructure.

The development site is based in the Fujairah water and electricity complex, between the existing Fujairah F1 and Fujairah F2 water and electricity plants, the Fujairah F3 IPP project will have a contracted power capacity of 2.4GW,

IN BRIEF AEG POWER SOLUTIONS TO SUPPLY UPS SYSTEMS FOR OMAN’S DUQM REFINERY AEG Power Solutions announced that it has been selected to provide UPS systems to secure power supply for the Duqm major refinery plant in Oman.

The project involves the development of facilities for storage and export of refined products and dry bulk products. Duqm refinery is planned to process 230,000 barrels per day (BPSD) of crude oil and is located on the east coast of Oman in the Al Wusta region, around 600km south of Muscat city and 560km north-east of Salalah.

The main engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for this offsite facilities project in Oman is a joint venture between Saipem SpA and CB&I Europe BV.

A QUARTER OF ENERGY STORAGE COMPANIES WILL CUT WORKFORCE Around 25% quarter of energy storage companies based in the US expect to reduce their workforces due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic - while more than half are anticipating a loss in revenues.

The figures are from a new survey from the U.S. Energy Storage Association.

The ESA study approached 101 representatives from the sector. Most of the companies want to retain their employees while waiting out the virus which has killed more than 22,000 Americans so far this year, but they also confirm that the resulting work stoppage will cut into revenues and projects.

MIGRANT WORKERS IN INDIA RECIEVE PROTECTIVE FACEMASKS SUPPLIED BY TATA POWER To highlight its committment to a national movement to copy with the Covid-19 pandemic Tata Power has jsupplied more than 120,000 facemasks for migrant workers. The Dhaaga initiative aims to tackle a shortage of protective masks across India, especially for community members and migrant workforces in the area.

Shalini Singh, Chief-Corporate Communications & Sustainability, told the media: “The supply of these facemasks by our Dhaaga members has been critical and timely in meeting the demand from a very vulnerable section of the local population in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Odisha, particularly the migrant population who were returning to the safety of their homes.

“We appreciate their efforts of supporting the community and wish that these skilled women entrepreneurs of Dhaaga will continue to do their bit during these challenging times.”

Tata Power prides itself on a strong portfolio of 1388 MW of solar generation capacity.

It has recently commissioned a 100 MW solar plant at Anantapur Solar Park, Andhra Pradesh. It has also commissioned 150 MW in Pavagada, Karnataka, 30 MW at Palaswadi in Maharashtra and 25 MW in Charanka, Gujarat in 2017.

The Company set up its first solar power plant of 110 kW, in 1996 at Walwhan in Lonavla.

DECARBONISING POWER GENERATION - A NEW DEAL BETWEEN SIEMENS AND UNIPER Uniper and Siemens Gas and Power have signed a cooperation agreement to develop projects on the decarbonisation of power generation and promoting sector coupling.

One focus of the planned co-operation is the production and use of green hydrogen - hydrogen obtained from renewable energy sources.

The scope of the cooperation agreement includes the evaluation of the potential of Uniper’s existing gas turbines and gas storage facilities for the use of hydrogen.

The aim is to define what role hydrogen can play in the future evolution of Uniper’s coal power plants.

Uniper has announced that it would close or convert its coal-fired power plants in Europe by 2025 at the latest, which is instrumental to make the company achieve its objective of becoming carbon neutral in

Europe by 2035.

Siemens Gas and Power is helping its customers achieve their decarbonisation goals. ‘Brownfield transformation’ projects are designed to decarbonise coal-fired power plants and significantly reduce CO2 emissions from gas-fired power plants, including the integration of storage solutions and the use of “green gas.” Siemens provides its core technologies for a long-term CO2-free energy supply – from power and heat generation by renewable energies or gas-fired power plants, to power transmission and distribution, to efficient electrolysis for hydrogen production.

Uniper CEO Andreas Schierenbeck comments: “After the coal phase-out and the switch to a secure gas-based energy supply, the use of climate-friendly gas will be a major step towards successful energy system transformation.”

This supply agreement secures competitive pricing for Powin and substantial supply with a Tier 1 vendor through 2022.

IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY WITH NEWLY-DEVELOPED ABB IE5 SYNRM MOTORS FROM ABB

To meet the growing global demand for improved energy efficiency, ABB’s synchronous reluctance (SynRM) motors is set to meet the IE5 ultra-premium energy efficiency class defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The IE5 ultra-premium SynRM motors are said to offer up to 50% lower energy losses and lower energy consumption than the commonly used IE2 induction motors. ABB first introduced SynRM technology in 2011 and case studies in industrial installations have demonstrated energy savings of up to 25%, depending on the application.

The IE5 level of efficiency is made possible by the SynRM design which combines the performance advantages of permanent magnet technology with the simplicity and service-friendliness of an induction platform. To ensure an environmentally friendly design, the permanent magnets do not feature rare earth materials.

CHINA’S SGCC IS BUILDING 800KV TRANSMISSION LINE According to Enerdata, the Chinese power transmission network operator - State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) = has resumed construction on the 800kV, 800MW ultra-high voltage (UHV) direct current (DC) power transmission project between Yulin, Shaanxi province and Wuhan, Hubei province.

Construction work had been suspended in the Hubei province, the epicentre of the global coronavirus pandemic. The new line is expected to start operations in 2021.

The $2.6b project will include nearly 3,000 km of UHVDC power lines, with a total transmission capacity of 14GW. This will allow SGCC to deliver 40 TWh/year of electricity from Shaanxi its coal reserves are estimated at 270 Gt (12% of the national reserves).

The USA’s power industry has said it is essentialfor its workers to be designated as ‘first responders’ during the current coronavirus pandemic.

This is according to the heads of the American Public Power Association (APPA), the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and the industry group for investor-owned utilities, the Edison Electric Institute (EEI).

Leaders of the three groups discussed the need for better access to personal protection equipment (PPE), cleaning materials and tests for the coronavirus.

“The nationwide shortage of PPE and tests “ertainly puts more risk on our system than we’d like to bear,” reports APPA CEO Joy Ditto.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Safety Agency designated several kinds of utility workers as ‘essential ‘ in March 2020, but achieving a status similar to that of healthcare workers would allow them more access to protective and sanitizing equipment.

The groups are currently working with the Electricity Subsector Coordinating Council to address supply chain issues for PPE, testing and for essential cleaning materials.

IN BRIEF CAPSTONE WINS REPEAT ORDER FOR FIVE C200S MICROTURBINES DV Energy, Capstone’s distributor in the Far Eastern Federal District in Russia, secured the 1.0MW order in late 2019.

The natural gas-fuelled C200S microturbines will act as the primary power source for the Aldan Railway Station and provide heating for the main building, reducing its operational costs and eliminating the uncertainty of grid fluctuations. The microturbine will operate in grid connect mode, which enables the customer to operate with the utility in a load sharing capacity.

70MW BIOMASS COGENERATION PLANT IN CHINA TO BE FUNDED BY THE SUNPOWER GROUP Sunpower Group plans to invest in a biomass cogeneration project in Tongshan District, Xuzhou City of Jiangsu Province, The Tongshan project will be constructed in phases and have a total capacity of 2 × 130 tons/hour (t/h) steam boilers and 2 × 35 megawatt (MW) electricity generators. The estimated investment for Phase 1 of the Tongshan Project is approximately $59.71 million.

It will be developed under a joint venture in which Sunpower will own a 85% stake. Once completed, the biomass cogeneration plant will supply civil heating to homes in Tongshan District as well as supply electricity to the State Grid.

The Tongshan project has been granted an exclusive concession right to supply heating by the Tongshan District Government.

Biomass conversion technologies transform a variety of wastes into heat, electricity and biofuels by employing a host of strategies. Conversion routes are generally thermochemical or biochemical, but may also include chemical and physical.

The simplest way is to burn the biomass in a furnace, exploiting the heat generated to produce steam in a boiler, which is then used to drive a steam turbine. Advanced biomass conversion technologies include biomass integrated gasification combined cycle (BIGCC) systems, cofiring (with coal or gas), pyrolysis and second generation biofuels.

A typical biomass cogeneration (or biomass cogen) system provides: distributed generation of electrical and/or mechanical power, waste-heat recovery for heating, cooling, or process applications. Such plants usually include seamless system integration for a variety of technologies, thermal applications, and fuel types into existing building infrastructure.

Biomass cogeneration systems consist of a number of individual components - prime mover (heat engine), generator, heat recovery, and electrical interconnection - configured into an integrated whole.

The type of equipment that drives the overall system (i.e., the prime mover) typically identifies the CHP unit. In China it is likely that the fuel tyes available will include wheat straw, corn stalks, and sugarcane bagasse. Forest residues and wood wastes represent a large potential resource for energy production and include forest residues, forest thinnings, and primary mill residues.

Few events in recent history have been as formative for our society as the COVID-19 Lockdown . The coronavirus has already tragically claimed thousands of lives and the livelihoods of millions, threatening to undo the longest period of sustained economic growth the globe has ever seen.

As time wears on its impact are only worsening. It’s difficult to provide any economic models or financial projections about markets as WIP usually does. But the job-intensive green energy sector could be set to flourish, particularly if policy-makers include some variant of a Green New Deal in their plans for secondary stimulus packages, a new analysis shows.

Daily power generation at coal power plants in most countries has been recorded at a four-year low compared with the same period for 2019, while steel production has sunk to a five-year low. According to a study published by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) in Finland, China’s carbon emissions have dropped by least 100 million metric tonnes over just a two week period. This represents nearly 6% of global emissions during the same period in 2019. * EMPLOYMENT LEVELS Post-pandemic, industry will face a world in which capital markets remain uncertain and still worried about climate change. According to Bloomberg, industry has increasingly lost “easy access to capital markets,” and oil and gas job numbers have been falling even before COVID-19 hit the U.S. and global economy.

Bloomberg further reports that, while fossil-fuel employment—“including extraction, transportation, processing, and power generation”—reached almost 1.7 million in 2019, the green electricity sector “isn’t far behind, at almost 1.6 million.” Both will be affected.

POWER PLANT SOLUTION FOR NLMK URAL IN RUSSIA

n November 2019, the MWM distributor MKS Group of companies, together with the MWM specialists, successfully completed the commissioning of the generating equipment at the power plant for NLMK Ural (NLMK Group), one of Russia’s largest enterprises, at its production site in Nizhniye Sergi, Sverdlovsk region.

Design, equipment supply, construction, installation and commissioning of the power plant were completed by the MKS Group of Companies within twelve months from laying the foundation to commissioning.

The power plant functions in cogeneration mode with simultaneous power and heat production. The energy complex houses an MWM TCG 2032B V16 unit and three gas fired hot-water boilers of 7 MW (megawatts) each.

With 4.5 MW general electrical power and 25.5 MW thermal power the power plant became the most powerful gas engine power plant in the Nizhneserginsky district of the Sverdlovsk region.

The total efficiency of the installation amounts to 86.5 percent. The power plant completely covers the demand of the production site’s heat consumption

as well as 50 percent of the electricity consumption.

The environmentally-friendly power plant will also decrease the greenhouse emissions of the NLMK Ural enterprise by 4,000 tons per year.

Reduced Production Costs and a Short Payback Period The inauguration of the power plant took place on November 14th, 2019.

During the ceremony the power plant was set into operation from the control centre.

“The cheap electrical output and thermal power produced by the MWM TCG 2032B V16 engine allows us to significantly reduce the production costs”, says Roman Panteleev, Chief power engineer of NLMK Ural.

“The work was well-organised and co-ordinated, the generating equipment was constructed in a short time”. According to calculations, the payback period of the energy centre will be three years.”

400 MW+ POWER PLANT CAPACITY INSTALLED IN BANGLADESH

M

AN Energy Solutions is supplying generation technology for a newly-built power plant in Chandpur, Bangladesh, and has successfully handed over another three power plants in the cities of Bogra and Chittagong.

MAN Energy Solutions is supplying its customer Chandpur Power Generation with a combination of four 18V51/60TS and two 20V45/60 engines for the new plant in Chandpur, which will feed a total of 125 MW into the national grid.

The world’s most powerful four-stroke engine – the MAN 20V45/60 being installed in Chandpur has an output of around 26 MW per engine, Not only is the 20V45/60 especially powerful it also achieves outstanding efficiency values with a fuel utilisation of over 50 percent.

The customer in Chandpur is also relying on another special feature: four 18V51/60TS engines are combined for the first time with two-stage turbocharging – a premiere for this engine type.

Such units come with a low-pressure compressor and a high-pressure compressor, which work connected in series and therefore achieve improved power density and efficiency.

“The Chandpur power plant operators have chosen a particularly innovative engine setup. The combination of powerful 20V45/60 engines and the 18V51/60TS engines with two-stage turbocharging guarantees maximum fuel efficiency while also allowing for a more compact plant design thanks to a higher power density,” explains Waldemar Wiesner, Head of Region MEA (Middle-East Africa), Power Plant Sales, at MAN Energy Solutions.

The three power plants constructed in Bogra and Chittagong have now been successfully handed over to the customer, The power plants use fifteen 18V48/60 units in total. The two plants in Bogra will generate 113 MW each to supply base-load electricity to the city, while the third power plant in Chittagong will feed 56 MW into the grid of the port of Bangladesh’s secondlargest city.

“We are proud that we were able to successfully complete another three power plant projects in Bangladesh. As soon as all ongoing projects are finished, MAN will provide a capacity of around 2 GW nationwide. This corresponds to around 10 percent

economic growth, the importance of our contribution to meeting the rising demand for energy in the country will continue to increase,” states Wiesner.

The 18V48/60TS is said to open a new dimension in engine performance and operational flexibility. Offering a wide load range and low fuel consumption, it sets a new benchmark for four-stroke diesel engines, reports MAN Energy Solutions.

Thanks to two-stage turbocharging the charge air pressure can be increased substantially. The result is optionally higher power density and, in conjunction with Miller engine cycle, reduced exhaust emissions and lower fuel consumption.

With the TCX series MAN Energy Solutions has developed a turbocharger especially suited for two-stage turbocharging of two- and four-stroke engines.

With two turbochargers upstream of the engine, the engine receives twice the charge air pressure while the turbocharger efficiency is increased significantly.

The 18V48/60TS can be operated continuously at electrical genset power outputs from 18,654 kW to 21,319 kW.

MUSC COVID-19 TREATMENT HOSPITAL DEPENDS ON CAT C175-16 DIESEL GENSETS

First opened in 1824, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), is one of the oldest continually-operating schools of medicine in the USA. It has expanded from a small private college for training physicians to a state university with a medical centre and six colleges that educate a broad range of health professionals, biomedical scientists, and other health-related personnel. It also operates as a centre for research and has a public hospital.

It is playing a key role in the treatment of victims of the COVID-19 virus. Today, its standby power depends on four CAT C175-16 diesel generator sets supplied through Cat® Dealer Blanchard Power Systems.

T

he Medical University Hospital handles 709 admissions and over 730,000 outpatients annually. It is the only Level I trauma centre in the South Carolina low country. Much of the coastal region of South Carolina is commonly known by locals as the ‘low country’;, an area rich in southern architecture, history and tourism.

But as a hospital complex positioned at the coastal edge of downtown Charleston, officials at the Medical University of South Carolina realised that floodwaters from a hurricane or tropical storm could put facilities at risk for a total power failure that not even standby generators could withstand.

“All of our major infrastructure equipment - all the generators, boilers, chillers, and related infrastructure equipment that runs the healthcare facility - all of it was in the flood plain,” recalled Tripp Player, a consulting engineer for GWA Inc. “And most of the equipment was 25 years old and was near the end of its useful life.”

Based on the catastrophic failures of medical facilities in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and also experience gained from Hurricane Hugo in 1989, a team of architects and engineers was hired five years ago to evaluate the potential threat and risk to the normal power, emergency power, steam, chilled water, medical gas, and other related infrastructure systems and equipment at the university, including the North Tower and the University and Children’s hospital facilities.

The study concluded that these hospitals could experience total, catastrophic loss of the infrastructure equipment and systems.

“If we’re in the path of a 100-year storm with the right characteristics, a wet storm on a high tide in Charleston, they project the entire first floor will be under water,” said Iggy Pla, an infrastructure project manager for the Medical University Hospital Authority (MUHA). “It will wipe out the first floor - we’re going to have fish swimming in the hallways.”

If a flood wipes out mechanical equipment, then air movement stops and mould sets in, which is what happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

“In the coastal region, mould is what gets you,” Pla said. “After Katrina, the experience for those affected facilities was you lose all your air handlers and you lose all your normal power. Then you can’t move air in a building on the coast during hurricane season, which is typically August and September.

“The number one thing that would kill the hospital is mould,” Pla continues. “As soon as you have your entire first floor full of mould, eventually you’d have mould on the tenth floor. It wouldn’t just be a first floor renovation project. Because mould is everywhere,

The Medical University of South Carolina’s modern campus in downtown Charleston dates from the early 1950s and has been subjected to varying degrees of planning expertise over the years, resulting in an electrical plant which was less than optimal.

The MUHA’s decision to mitigate potential failures from storm flooding presented a rare opportunity to bring outdated electrical systems into the 21st century. That effort required months of planning and countless meetings between engineers, facilities staff, and clinicians to ensure power remained on during new construction.

Creation of a vertical building expansion - with the lowest levels of the facility stationed above the storm surge levels and the relocation of infrastructure equipment and systems to these elevated areas - greatly reduces the risk of losing power due to flooding.

For David Dement, director of facilities and maintenance, culmination of the project represented the realisation of years of planning.

“You can build a generator plant anywhere,” Dement says. “But when you build a generator plant or a boiler plant or any kind of infrastructure for a hospital, you are connecting directly to the patient - and this is how we touch the patient.”

GWA was responsible for planning and engineering the modernisation of the hospitals’ electrical infrastructure to update and consolidate systems, improve reliability, reduce power costs, and withstand severe flooding. Existing high-voltage service equipment was relocated and reconfigured to permit the hospitals to operate independent of the public utility and to be powered by a new multi-unit diesel electrical power generator plant, thereby ensuring reliability of power.

Built in a former loading dock area between two buildings on MUSC’s dense urban campus, the $40 million Sabin Street Energy Plant was completed in December 2013. It houses air conditioning systems, switchgear, and four Cat® C175-16 generator sets - with each system placed on a separate floor in a five-storey building.

Should the main utility feed go down, the energy plant is designed to provide full power to the Children’s and University hospitals and the North Tower at the same 13,800 kV level.

“Before this project, we had a generator for the North Tower, we had two generators for the main hospital, and we had four generators for Children’s Hospital,” Player said.

“What this project enabled us to do is consolidate all these generators and have just one central energy plant. I can’t begin to explain the amount of co-ordination it took to integrate those separate buildings and bring the main distribution back to one location. That was the heart of the project.”

The four Cat C175-16 generator sets were provided by local Cat dealer Blanchard Power Systems.

Introduced by Caterpillar in 2008, the C175-16 has been in use across the globe in a variety of applications and has proven to be highly reliable and durable.

While the MUSC campus is packed with scores of various Cat generators, familiarity with the brand was not the number one consideration in the selection of generator sets.

“It’s the service,” Player says. “At some point, a man-made machine is going to break. When it breaks, you need to have a

man in a van who responds quickly and knows what he’s doing when he gets here. So when we select equipment, the product support, parts, and service are primary considerations.

“It’s just like a football team - if you start dropping the ball, we will find somebody to carry the ball,” he continues. “But Blanchard carries the ball for us, and they don’t fumble. We know we can count on them for an almost immediate response when an issue arises.”

The standby power CAT C175-16 diesel generator set meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards and offers reliable performance proven in thousands of applications worldwide. his year the French brand Moteurs Baudouin. released its first engine range powered by natural gas. Alongside the company’s diesel engine range will also feature dedicated engine models for segments like telecom and data centres for clients around the world.

Using gas - a clean, cost-effective and readily available fuel - the new PowerKit Gas series is available across a range of engine models. All are electronically controlled and CHP ready, with power outputs available between 63-1750 kVA 50Hz and 63-1400 kVA 60Hz. The average efficiency of the gas engines is also impressive, up to 38% for the low kVA range and between 40-45% for the HHP 16M33 and 12M55 engines.

PILOT PROJECT FOR STATIONARY FUEL CELLS

echnology group Rolls-Royce and Lab1886 have taken the first step in co-operation on the use of fuel cells for stationary power generation.

Lab1886, the innovation unit of Mercedes-Benz within Mercedes-Benz AG, are supporting Rolls-Royce Power Systems in a pilot project for stationary fuel cell systems.

On the basis of automotive fuel cells, a holistic concept for future sustainable and independent (emergency) power supply is to be developed in the coming months.

Over the coming months, Rolls-Royce will develop an integrated MTU solution for sustainable off-grid generation of continuous and emergency power using vehicle fuel cells, focused on safety-critical applications such as data centres.

MTU generator sets from Rolls-Royce are already in service at numerous data centers worldwide, providing emergency power when needed to safeguard global internet traffic. To date, these generator sets have been diesel-engine based, but fuel cells could be a valid alternative. The pilot project will begin early next year and will include the construction of an emergency power plant for Rolls-Royce’s data center in Friedrichshafen.

The plant will be based on fuel cell modules built by Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH. Mercedes-Benz has developed expertise in hydrogen-powered electric vehicles through its work on many generations of vehicle, while Rolls-Royce has long-standing experience of fuel cell systems using other technologies.

“

As a supplier of integrated solutions, the decarbonisation of our drive, propulsion and power generation systems is a key strategic aim. In pursuing it, we’re open to all technologies. Hence fuel cells are set to become a key technology for us,” explains Andreas Schell - CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

“The idea behind the fuel cell is as ingenious as it is simple and we’re all pretty familiar with it. But implementing it in practice can still be a difficult challenge. Now that fuel cells have reached series maturity, they’re ready for the commercial market,” explains Dr Martin Teigeler - R&D chief of Power Systems Alongside fuel cell technology, RollsRoyce is researching the manufacture of hydrogen and other synthetic fuels using renewable energy sources – also for use in fuel cells.

“Used in this combination, fuel cells promise to make an even bigger contribution to the energy turnaround,” said Teigeler.

“And we’re delighted to have Lab1886 as our partner, because their technological mindset fits ours perfectly. We’re confident that Mercedes-Benz fuel cell modules have the potential to open up new

application possibilities in stationary power generation as well, and that’s our market.”

LOADBANKS KEEP THE TURBINES MOVING IN IRAQ PetroChina recently commissioned five new GE turbines for the Halfaya oil and gas refinery, based in southern Iraq. These turbines needed to be fully tested before use - which is why the contractor, BHGE, turned to UK-based Crestchic Loadbanks.

T

his As a major global oil and gas producer and oilfield service provider, PetroChina has been present in Iraq for over 20 years, investing heavily in the country’s infrastructure in order to rebuild the oil and gas industry in the region.

As part of this investment, the company has recently commissioned five new GE turbines for the Halfaya oil and gas refinery, based in southern Iraq. Electricity shortages threaten economic development in Iraq, with supplies intermittent and unstable. In an oil and gas application, a loss of power and the resulting impact on production revenue can have a significant impact on a company’s bottom line.

To mitigate this risk, the newly commissioned turbines will be used to power the oilfield. They will provide the stable operating power required to reach its oil production targets, which are set to increase from 370,000 barrels per day to 470,000. The turbines will also produce enough electricity to power the nearby town of Halfaya.

As part of the commissioning phase for such a large-scale business-critical installation, it is vital that the turbines are fully tested prior to use. To fulfil this requirement, the contractor, BHGE, turned to Crestchic Loadbanks.

Naji El Assal, General Manager for Crestchic Middle East, explains: “The turbines selected for this particular installation are known for their ability to operate in extreme conditions and harsh environments, making them ideal for the temperatures they’ll face in Iraq.

“They will be used to provide the oil field with the base power it needs to operate off-grid, so must be fully tested to check that they will operate as they should.”

He points out: “By using a load bank to simulate a load, we can test every part of the system, from the switchgear to voltage regulators, alternators to electrical cabling and fuel systems, ensuring that they will operate safely and reliably when powered up.”

Using a load bank to test the system involves taking incremental steps to bring the newly commissioned turbines up to full load, testing all system components while also monitoring vibration, temperature and airflow to ensure peak efficiency.

At the same time, in applications such as this one, where power may fluctuate, using a load bank makes it possible to simulate the effect of peaks & troughs and also accurately measure the recovery interval (‘transient response’) until the engine speed returns to normal.

Naji concludes, “Oil revenue accounts for 99 percent of export earnings, 90 percent of government revenue and 60 percent of gross domestic product in Iraq, making it vital that the infrastructure that powers production is robust and ready to fulfil its purpose.”

DATA CENTRES: ENERGY MONITORING HAS NEVER MATTERED MORE

A

s the powerhouses of the world, data centres are providing life critical protection and support as we face unique challenges that not even the most robust continuity plan was ready for.

The safeguarding of our data centres is more critical than it has ever been – as they provide the backbone for our most vital healthcare, industrial and communications facilities for every nation, reports Socomec’s Phil Dunn.

As we start to grapple with a new normal, where IRL now looks suspiciously like our online life, we are dependent - now more than ever - on the infrastructure and services of which our data centres are the foundation.

Furthermore, with unprecedented volumes of online traffic and worldrecord beating levels of data throughput, the careful management and mastery of our digital infrastructure can provide organisations with critical visibility and reliability – protecting against the downtime that we simply cannot afford.

The granularity concept as i ntroduced by Chapter 8 of EN 506002-2 is one that should be designed-in when implementing power monitoring devices throughout a facility.

Granular power monitoring is a must as not only does it account for all consumption but it breaks that consumption down according to key criteria – making it easy to uncover, analyse and correct problems early on.

Simply relying on general data is not enough to support informed decision making or activity. By using devices that can harvest more than just the very basic energy readings, valuable preventive and corrective action can be taken that is rooted in robust information.

For instance, by measuring harmonics and imbalance, weak points can be identified preventing the constant deterioration of equipment and optimising maintenance operations.

Furthermore, the monitoring of each individual protective device (on / off / trip) allows the user to perform a rapid reset in the event of a trip, minimising downtime and the direct and indirect cost associated with any loss of uptime. Whether associated with productivity losses, revenue losses, longer term customer attrition, system recovery costs or the long term impact of reputational damage, the total cost of downtime can be financially crippling and life limiting – and is simply not an option in the operating context of today’s hard

– and is simply not an option in the operating context of today’s hard working electrical infrastructures.

To be clear, implementing a power monitoring system within a facility enables every Data Centre Manager to achieve a real grasp on both how much energy is entering via the mains as well as how much energy is being consumed - with that consumption broken down by each piece of equipment.

The wider impact of mastering energy monitoring means that because consumption can be broken down, it’s possible to identify tangible cost saving opportunities that will result in a reduction in monthly utility billing – delivering straight to the bottom line from day one.

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) – the industry-accepted energy efficiency metric as defined by ISO / IEC 30134-2:2016 (standard information technology – data) – enables the energy efficiency of a Data Centre to be tracked and measured.

As a key performance indicator, PUE considers the ratio of the Data Centre’s total power consumption to the power consumption of IT. The closer to 1 that the PUE is, the more efficient the facility, indicating that most of the power consumed is supporting IT servers.

In the evolution of PUE, it’s important to correlate with power quality and environmental factors; for example, a lower PUE in winter is considered to be normal as a result of the season’s low temperatures. For the most accurate results, the measurement of PUE by area or application must be conducted as close to the final IT loads as possible in order to help best understand where changes need to be made as well as where to prioritise resource.

The reliability, quality and maintainability of the power supply are key success factors in guaranteeing service. The incoming supply must be continuously monitored in order to detect deviations or abnormal events and to support well-informed decisions about which corrective action to pursue. A preventative measure when it comes to the premature aging of the electrical installation or equipment, this also optimise costs and avoid data losses.

Power Quality Meters (PQM) - with the implementation of real time alerts - enable the health of the electrical distribution to be monitored and to detect drifts in measurements, optimising power availability, guaranteeing continuity and protecting critical assets.

In terms of efficiency, by managing IT and cooling equipment more effectively it is possible to reduce energy consumption and adapt the power demand to actual requirements – significantly when it’s considered that cooling can represent up to 40% of the total energy used to operate a data centre. Furthermore, by installing power monitoring systems across multiple data halls, staff are able to benchmark usage and efficiency to drive improvements.

It has been a challenging time for engine manufacturers in meeting the technical demands of the new emission standards and although the step from Tier 4 Final to Stage 5 is not as large as previous changes, the challenges have kept everyone busy.

The onus is now on the OEM’s to ensure their engine choice is integrated completely into their genset package, and to have it ready for the multiple power applications that they feed into.

riffiss Utility Services of Rome, New York, USA,, was formed to service the Griffiss Business and Technology Park - it was also tasked with providing power for 60 companies.

Aware of rising oil and natural gas prices, GUSC decided to look for a way to provide the park with clean, reliable, and lower-cost power.

Its key challenge was to develop a flexible energy power plant which met new environmental guidelines and still provides reliable, low-cost energy to endusers.

Ultimately, the Elliott Group of Pennsylvania provided a 900 kWe backpressure steam turbine generator which uses the steam generated from a biomass boiler. The technology applied was the SVSS Steam Turbine with Induction Generator (900kWe).

ummins has two new products: its 500 kilowatt (kW) mobile generator set is the newest addition to the Tier 4 Final mobile generator product line.

The C500D6RE offers a 500 kW power rating as per ISO 8528, and is powered by a U.S Tier 4 Final certified QSX15 Cummins engine. The QSX15 engine meets the stringent EPA standards without the need of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) offering ease of serviceability, lower emissions and greater performance.

The 500 kW model is fitted with the proven and well-established Cummins Stamford alternator, as well as the Cummins PowerCommand 3.3 controller with Masterless Load Demand (MLD) technology; which allows for units of different sizes to parallel together and adjust the required power output to respond to variable load demands, reaching maximum efficiency.

With a power density of 500 kW from a 15-litre engine, the C500D6RE mobile generator is designed to provide reliable power, regardless of the climate or altitudes.

This new series offers a total package of gas generator capabilities for combined heat and power (CHP/CCHP), demand side management and alternative fuel applications, while being suitable for a diverse set of industries ranging from hospitals and manufacturing to commercial building and utilities requiring continuous operation whether it is grid parallel or island mode.

White smoke often occurs when there is either too much fuel being injected into the combustion chamber, or not enough heat to burn the fuel. Unburned fuel travels through the exhaust system & exits out the exhaust which will produce a scent of rich, un-burnt diesel, this can be caused by worn/leaking injectors.

Black smoke indicates excess fuel is being injected into the combustion chamber and/or not enough air is present. This can be caused by worn/ leaking injectors.

HOMES TO BE HEATED BY LOW COST, LOW CARBON HEAT NETWORKS An announcement made last month in the UK Budget 2020 (11th of March 2020) will boost the UK heat sector in combatting climate change, says the Association for Decentralised Energy (The ADE).

The Treasury has committed £270m to a Green Heat Network Fund. This fund will be accessible from 2022-2025, and will support the deployment of low carbon heat networks.

According to figures from the CCC, the ADE estimates that this announcement will support the sector to put 4.25m homes on heat networks by 2050.

The ADE has been calling for funding support beyond the end of the Heat Networks Investment Project (HNIP), and certainty from government about ongoing funding support since HNIP’s inception.

The ADE has also been calling for support from government to reduce the costs of low carbon generation on heat networks, and to support the use of waste heat.

In total, alongside the £320m government funded HNIP, this brings total government spend on heat networks up to well over half a billion pounds.

Heat networks deliver cost-effective, low carbon heat, in the form of hot water or steam, from a central point of generation to the end user through a network of insulated pipes.

There are already around 500,000 customers receiving heat through heat networks, equating to around 14,000 heat networks.

The CCC (Committee on Climate Change) has set a target to grow this to serve 1.5 million UK homes in 2030.

The ADE represents member companies across the entire heat network sector; from the pipe, heat pump and metering manufacturers, from local authorities to housing associations, and from heat generation to end-customer service providers.

Ian Calvert, Director of The ADE said: “This announcement recognises the considerable contribution that heat networks can make to decarbonising heat and reaching the net zero target.

This shows that Government believes in the industry’s intention to step up in our contribution to seriously tackling climate change.

government up to 1,300 small generator units pro-bono to support the set-up of COVID-19 testing sites across the UK. In response to growing demand for enhanced testing for COVID-19, temporary testing sites are being stationed across the country – in major retailer carparks through to unused theme park facilities. As the number of temporary testing sites increases, so too does the need for access to reliable, modular power, particularly as many of these sites will not have easy connections to mains electricity.

Aggreko, which is headquartered in Glasgow, Scotland, has offered the UK government the use of its available fleet of small canopy generators - up to 1,300 units - which provide flexible, modular power to temporary venues.

As with most of Aggreko’s products, these generators can be remotely monitored without the need for an engineer to be physically present.

This design feature is advantageous during this time of social distancing, as it will help limit the number of people physically present at designated testing sites.

Chris Rason, Managing Director at Aggreko Northern Europe, said: “Aggreko is ready to help the COVID-19 relief effort in any way that we can and we are already supporting the healthcare, pharmaceutical and food & beverage industries.

* JCB LENDS A HAND AS ROYAL STOKE HOSPITAL APPEALS FOR GLOVES JCB has answered a call from the University Hospitals of North Midlands for donations of vital supplies of personal protective equipment during the current Coronavirus crisis. More than 8,000 pairs of gloves and a large quantity of face masks have been gifted to the hospital as it gears up for an influx of patients in the coming weeks.

They were donated by the JCB World Parts Centre at Uttoxeter, which continues to provide service, technical and spare parts back up to customers including farmers maintaining the food supply chain, contractors providing JCB generators to NHS hospitals and hirers keeping crucial utility services intact.

ENERGY MONITORING USING LONG RANGE WIRELESS MONITORING Carlo Gavazzi has developed a long-range wireless solution for energy monitoring. Siemens Gas and Power was recently selected to provide three 33-megawatt (MW) SGT-700B industrial gas turbines for a Long-Term Program (LTP) with Ascend Performance Materials’ nylon intermediate and specialty chemicals facility in Decatur, Alabama.

This project will allow Ascend Performance Materials to retire assets that currently provide process steam for the facility. The LTP is scheduled for eight years. Under the terms, Siemens Gas and Power will perform all scheduled outages for the duration of the program.

The LTP also calls for Siemens Gas and Power to upgrade, at the time of the first inspection, the B-series generators to C-series models (35 MW rating) to operate in a cogeneration application.

The gas turbines will be manufactured in Siemens Gas and Power’s Finspång, Sweden plant in time for project commissioning, which is expected in Q4 2021.

The SGT-700 gas turbine, with a 6,500-rpm, two-stage uncooled free-power turbine that may operate at 50 to 105 percent of its nominal shaft speed, is designed for higher output and efficiency under a range of operating conditions. And with its high exhaust heat and ability to handle sudden load changes, the SGT-700 is ideal for simple cycle, combined cycle, cogeneration, and other heating applications.

NEW LIGHTWEIGHT MILITARY-GRADE TURBOGENERATOR LAUNCHED BY UAV TURBINES INC. UAV Turbines, Inc. (UAVT) has developed a new lightweight, military-grade microturbine generator platform for on-demand electrical power ranging from 3 to 40 kW. UAVT has extended the use of its micro propulsion technology family, the Monarch 1, by developing a portable Micro-Turbogenerator System (MTS) that fits in a small case that the company said can be carried by two people.

The company said that the MTS’s small size, fuel flexibility, ability to rapidly change configurations and ease of moving without the need for forklifts and flatbed trucks addresses the critically important needs of rescue teams and military units.
