Two 1,000 kVA diesel generators with Cummins KTA38-G14 engine and STAMFORD alternator have been provided to a clinic site in the UK by VISA SPA. Manufactured by Visa SpA the two 1000 kVA generating sets each are open versions, designed to provide emergency power 24/7 to a clinical site facility.

The KTA38 G14 engine is recognized for performance, reliability and durability worldwide. With its very high derating threshold for temperatures, altitudes and humidity, the KTA38 G14 engine ranks among the top performers in the harshest operating environments.

BRITISH COMPANY SUPPLIES TEMPORARY ENERGY FOR THE 44TH RYDER CUP UK-based Aggreko was the official temporary energy supplier for the 44th Ryder Cup at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, Rome (29th September - 1 October, 2023).

Aggreko provided power and HVAC across the event from all hospitality to both the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Ryder Cup is one of the most iconic tournaments in golf and attracts tens-of-thousands of fans from all over the globe.

This was the company’s fifth time supporting the European leg of the competition having previously supplied energy to the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 editions.

ADDITIONAL 59MWP OF RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY CAPACITY FROM LARGEST SOLAR ARRAY IN ESSEX

PowerEx Live 2023 at London’s Park Plaza Hotel, will be held on Thursday 7th December, 2023.

Global resource management company, Veolia, is now providing an additional 59MWp of renewable electricity capacity following the start of operations at the UK’s largest solar array on a restored landfill area.

Capable of generating electricity equivalent to the demand of over 15,000 homes, the site at Ockendon, in Essex, has been developed with technology provider REG Power Management, using the latest PV modules.

This additional renewable capacity adds to Veolia’s existing solar energy facilities Ling Hall, Warwickshire, and Netley in Hampshire, and other solar power installations covering hospitals, offices, water treatment works and recycling centres.

To enable optimum generation and give a valuable use to this previously landfilled area, the Ockendon site is using around 107,000 bi-facial solar modules, each rated at either 540Wp or 545Wp. These modules absorb light on both sides to maximise the power density and are linked to inverters that convert DC to AC electricity.

This is then fed to the grid via an on-site 132,000 Volt transformer that is connected to the nearby Warley substation. It also provides the potential added benefit of embedded power use on site.

The “Powering Up Britain: Energy Security Plan”, published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in March 2023, commits to a five-fold increase of solar capacity in the UK from 14GW to 70GW by 2035. This implies a project on the scale of Ockendon being installed roughly every five days from now until the end of 2035.

Veolia already generates 800GWh of electricity using a combination of solar, biomass, biogas, and Energy Recovery facilities (ERF), that qualify under the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme, and supplies a secure baseload equivalent to powering 240,000 homes.

Commenting on the project, Donald Macphail, Chief Operating Officer - Treatment said: This latest renewable energy development is a further step towards achieving a net zero carbon future for the UK, and a demonstration of how we can transform this restored landfill to give it a new life. Through harnessing the power of the sun to deliver renewable electricity we are advancing our aim to achieve ecological transformation, and countering climate change. The project also has greater significance as the solar arrays have minimal ground level impact, so the wildlife that has repopulated the restored land can continue to coexist with the technology.

NEWS ZOO EMBRACES RENEWABLE ENERGY

L

eading energy and solutions provider E.ON has begun the installation of a new solar panel array at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Edinburgh Zoo as part of the wildlife conservation charity’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 60% by 2030 and be net zero by 2040.

The animals of Edinburgh Zoo have been introduced to the new solar panels being installed and have apparently given their ‘seal of approval’. Popular zoo residents including meerkats, giraffes, armadillos and penguins all looked on as construction of the new solar meadow gets underway.

Edinburgh Zoo’s solar meadow will feature more than 1,500 bifacial solar photovoltaic (PV) panels which can potentially generate up to 880,000 kWh of power a year. The solar meadow is expected to generate around 25% of Edinburgh Zoo’s electricity consumption, with the 1,548 solar panels being installed on the site by the end of 2023.

David Field, RZSS Chief Executive, said: “It’s vital that we inspire people to protect, value and love nature, and that starts with ensuring we’re reducing our own carbon paw-print on site at our zoos.

Nature and nature-based solutions must be prioritised, and our new solar installation with E.ON is a huge step in setting RZSS as a global exemplar for biodiversity and sustainability. The meadow is projected to generate up to 880,000 kWh a year, which represents a saving of 194 tonnes of CO2e, or 8% of our carbon annually.

“Our charity plans to reduce its carbon footprint by 60% by 2030 and develop a strategy to be net zero by 2040. When the solar meadow is complete, we’ll become the number one zoo in the UK for green energy generation, and number three in Europe.”

Chris Lovatt, Chief Operating Officer of UK Solutions at E.ON, said: “There’s no greater positive link between energy and our environment than generating sustainable power and using it for wildlife conservation, and this agreement with RZSS delivers both an economic and environmental win. This project contributes to the great work of RZSS and is just one of the ways we’re working with customers at home, in business and across whole communities, taking climate action to help the UK meet its net zero targets and combat the climate crisis.”

It currently uses recycled waste wood sourced from within the UK to generate 30MW of electrical energy and up to 25MW of thermal energy, to power up to 69,000¹ homes and businesses in the South Yorkshire region.

It also reduces carbon emissions by up to 65% when compared to natural gas.

A spokesman commented: “Historically the Blackburn Meadows site was a coal-fired power plant and we regenerated it into a renewable energy generator, as a biomass fuelled CHP plant nearly 10 years ago. The heat we generate, supplies local businesses through our own district heating network, including IKEA, Ice Sheffield, Sheffield Arena and Forgemasters’ Steel Works.”

Connecting Forgemasters’ to the Blackburn Meadows biomass plant has also meant a reduction in carbon emissions of over 700 tonnes of CO2, to support the environment whilst helping decarbonise Sheffield.

SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION WITH NOxMASTER™ SCR September 6th, 2023: Agriemach installation teams have been working on multiple sites and have assembled the first of 20 skid mounted NOxMASTER™ SCR Systems for FINNING. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR FC STADIUM’S ELECTRICAL SWITCHGEAR INSTALLATIONS ARE PROTECTED WITH KEY TECHNOLOGY

Tottenham Hotspur F.C. Stadium is a £850M development in north London, and home to premiership football club, Tottenham Hotspur.

The new stadium is one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the world with a capacity of 62,303, and unique as there are two pitches, one for football and one to host NFL American Football.

Protection for stadium back up power is vital and FirePro provided it.

Four new substations deliver power to the stadium and provide a high level of resilience, which is backed by two CAT diesel generators that are required to operate on each and every match occasion.

The stadium power switchgear comprises of over 55 sub distribution boards and over 680 distribution boards. Demands for power include for a data centre, ticketing, boilers,

chillers, pitch automation, DALI lighting system, also 2,300 special lights that enable the grass to grow whilst the football pitch is retracted under the stadium.

Knox Fire was employed to provide the automatic fire detection and fire suppression system, and were able to make the case for the numerous unique advantages for the FirePro fire suppression product.

During the stadium design phase, Knox was requested to provide competitive proposals for a suitable fire suppression system solution to protect the two diesel generator rooms. FirePro was the first choice, and after demonstrating fitness for purpose to the consultants Buro Happold, and professional team, received the order to design, supply, install, commission & hand over two new FirePro suppression systems.

NEWS 3MW COGENERATION SYSTEM FOR A UK-BASED LOGISTICS PARK

P

artners from Peel NRE, Vital Energi, and Ener-Vate, have come together to mark the start of the ground works at the land off Great Howard Street., Mersey.

The new energy centre will be home to one of the UK’s largest two stage water source heat pumps, taking heat from the water in the nearby Leeds/Liverpool Canal where it is fed into the 3MW heat pump and used to heat the surrounding homes and businesses via a 6 km (3km flow/3km return) district heating network, before being released out into Trafalgar Docks.

In addition to the new energy centre, Vital Energi will be extending the district heating system throughout the area. Phase 1 saw Vital Energi install 2km of highly insulated district heating pipework which included a technically challenging section 5.5m below Liverpool’s Great Howard street.

The new expansion will add an extra 1.2 km of district heating pipework which will run throughout Trafalgar & Central Docks and bring low-carbon heating and hot water to more residents and businesses.

The district heating network will provide low carbon heat and hot water for up to 6,700 homes and 1.3 million square feet of commercial space at Peel’s Liverpool Waters development as well as wider domestic and commercial buildings across Liverpool.

This initial phase of the project could supply 20GWh of heat every year, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and saving 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year, with planning permission in place to expand the project to supply around 45GWh. Andrew Wightman, Pre-Construction, Vital Energi, commented: “Projects like Liverpool Waters, which fully embrace renewable energy, will be fundamental to Liverpool, and the UK in general, meeting their net zero targets. Peel NRE have established sustainability at the heart of this development, and we are delighted to be delivering the low-carbon infrastructure. The Energy Centre has been designed to expand alongside the Liverpool Waters development, so will play a pivotal part in the long-term green future of Liverpool’s dockside.”

Myles Kitcher, Managing Director, Peel NRE said: “Emissions from heat are the single biggest contributor to UK carbon emissions, accounting for around a third of the nation’s carbon footprint.

Finding alternative low-carbon sources of heat will be vital if we’re to stay on track to achieve net zero by 2050. This ambitious project has the potential to provide enough low carbon heat for over a fifth of the homes in Liverpool, cementing the city at the heart of the region’s decarbonisation journey.”

Chris Capes, Director for Development at Liverpool Waters said: “Liverpool Waters strives for excellence in terms of sustainability and climate resilience. Part of our approach involves a focus on building efficiency and the implementation of ambitious site-wide strategies. This new energy centre, part of the wider Mersey Heat network, will help to bring low-carbon heating and hot water to residents and commercial customers across Liverpool Waters. This is a critical step on our journey to delivering the sustainable regeneration of Liverpool’s northern docklands.”

Rolls-Royce mtu has supplied a 3MW Cogeneration system for a UK-based logistics park.

The cogeneration installations currently produce 3 MW of power to supply the site. In addition to two emergency generators, two battery storage systems and a PV system have been integrated to form a microgrid with intelligent energy supply control.

Rolls-Royce is further developing its mtu gas engine portfolio for power generation and cogeneration to run on hydrogen as a fuel and thus enable a climate-neutral energy supply.

Gensets powered by mtu Series 500 and Series 4000 gas engines can be operated with a gas blending of 10 percent hydrogen.

continuously market new mtu Series 500 and Series 4000 gas engines beginning in 2023 for use with up to 100 percent hydrogen, and on a design to order basis conversion kits to allow already installed gas engines in the field to run on 100% hydrogen,” said Perry Kuiper, President Sustainable Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

“The decarbonisation of power generation requires reliable, flexible, but also climate-neutral, power plants to supplement the fluctuating generation from wind and sun. We assume that natural gas will initially be the primary fuel in the development of the hydrogen ecosystem, but we see hydrogen as technically and economically possible. That is why we continue to develop our gas engines for use with green hydrogen - whether as a 10 or 25 percent admixture or for 100 percent,” explains Andreas Görtz, Vice President Power Generation at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

In addition, fuel cells powered by 100% green hydrogen can play an important role in future energy supply in combination with renewable energies.

Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division has installed a 250-kilowatt fuel cell demonstrator, which will be used to test and present future CO2free energy systems to customers.

NEWS £92 BILLION POTENTIAL FOR UK SUPPLY CHAIN FOR OFFSHORE WIND

A

new report - ‘Supply Chain Capability Analysis’ - by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) and the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP) suggests that growing the UK’s supply chain for offshore wind could create a £92 billion opportunity for Britain’s economy. The report identifies key measures which industry and government could take to strengthen the UK’s offshore wind supply chain.

The UK has the second largest installed offshore wind capacity in the world, with a government target to more than treble this capacity by 2030 to 50 GW, including 5GW floating offshore wind.

This expansion represents a significant increase in demand for equipment and services required to develop, construct, and operate offshore wind farms. Meanwhile, the expansion of offshore wind in other countries provides an opportunity for the UK to export its equipment, services, and expertise abroad.

Targeted intervention in the UK supply chain has the potential to bring £92 billion worth of ‘gross value added’ into the economy, says the report. and even more could be done to keep the UK’s supply chain resilient – with UK suppliers competing with those of other countries for vital contracts, and the jobs and opportunities they bring.

The analysis outlines some key areas of advantage for the UK supply chain, as well as areas for potential improvement. The report’s key recommendations take a systemic view of the supply chain, prioritising long-term economic value creation in areas where the UK could build globally competitive industrial capacity.

Sophie Banham, vice-chair of the Offshore Wind Industry Council,concludes: “The UK has some world-class factories and organisations involved in renewables, and now we are in a global race for cleaner energy; we need to keep our foot firmly on the accelerator to avoid slipping behind and losing the advantages that we have gained.”

GOVERNMENT RENEWABLES AUCTION BENEFITS TIDAL STREAM COMPANIES Last month seven tidal stream projects won contracts in the UK government’s latest renewables auction, AR5. Around 53 MW of tidal stream capacity has been contracted in all, building on the 40 MW secured in the previous round.

Project which have won approval include SAE Renewables, securing 21.94 MW of capacity for its project in Pentland Firth, MeyGen, Scotland, Orbital Marine Power which was awarded 7.2 MW, and Magallanes which was awarded 1.5 MW. The latter sites are both based at EMEC, the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney.

Four projects in Wales totalling over 22 MW of tidal stream capacity have been contracted. The four are Hydrowing (10 MW), Verdant (4.9 MW), MOR Energy (4.5 MW) and Magallanes (3 MW). All four projects will be installed at the Morlais Tidal Demonstration Zone at the island of Anglesey. Run by social enterprise Menter Mon, the consented 35 sq km area of seabed allows for the installation and commercial demonstration of multiple tidal energy devices.

Tidal stream technology has already delivered over 70 GWh of electricity to the grid. The auction, which saw developers able to bid on a range of renewable technologies including solar PV, onshore and offshore wind and hydropower, failed to procure any offshore wind capacity.

The assessment, which featured 2D modelling and 3D inversions, enables Angus Energy to make informed and cost-effective decisions regarding future development phases.

DOGGER BANK CONNECTED TO UK NATIONAL GRID Dogger Bank, the world’s largest offshore wind farm has finally connected to the UK’s National Grid electricity transmission network following the extension of its Creyke Beck 400 kV substation in Yorkshire.

While not yet fully operational, Dogger Bank has has produced its first electricity, marking a major milestone in the development of the UK’s offshore wind industry and the transition to a cleaner, more secure energy system.

The wind farm is being constructed in the North Sea in three 1.2 GW phases known as Dogger Bank A, B and C, and is due for completion in 2026. Phase A has been connected to Creyke Beck, phase B is to be

connected at the same substation, and phase C is planned to plug into National Grid’s Lackenby substation.

The Dogger Bank connection to the mainland was made using Hitachi Energy’s high-voltage direct current system, the first time it has been used within the UK grid.

NEWS GENERATING ENERGY FROM WASTE - WHETHER POWER OR HEAT – IS A LOGICAL PART OF THE MOVE TOWARDS CIRCULAR THINKING

E

nergy from Waste plants in the UK currently emit around 11 Mte CO2 per year, with proposed and under-construction energy facilities potentially adding another 9 Mte CO2 per year. Reducing these emissions would have a material impact on the UK’s low carbon energy transition.

Preliminary analysis of the potential of fitting Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) equipment to the growing number of Energy from Waste (EfW) plants in the UK as a means of CO2 reduction has therefore been undertaken.

The key conclusion from this analysis is that the cost of EfW-CCUS technology as a means of emissions abatement is competitive with other industrial abatement options.

Due to the biogenic content in waste, adding CCUS to EfW actually reduces net carbon in the system, which may be more effective than other disposal options e.g. Moving tonnes of waste to landfill.

However there is conceptual tension between waste combustion with energy recovery facilities and increased recycling as options, which although carefully managed in current policy would need further consideration if EfW with CCUS is to be incentivised, requiring policies reflecting this ability to generate “negative emissions” as a consequence of using the biogenic content of part of the carbon in waste.

Technical conclusions from the report include: -Many EfW plants are geographically well located for CCUS, being in industrial clusters near to accessible CO2 storage locations -A significant proportion of the UK’s EfW fleet is relatively new compared to other industrial facilities, and they therefore have a long life ahead of them in which to benefit from a CCUS retrofit investment -CCUS significantly improves the sustainability of Energy from Waste facilities and can therefore mitigate many of the system level environmental issues that threaten the long-term sustainability of EfW in the UK - On a lowest system transition cost basis, fitting CCUS to EfW plants could lead to 20% of all captured CO2 in the UK being derived from EfW plants by 2050, with a corresponding 20% overall increase in CO2 being captured in the same timeframe compared with the case without EfW-CCUS being available.

Energy from Waste Regulations UK: Policy Recommendations -EfW with CCUS should be included in the options the Government assesses when it considers an investment in the decarbonisation of industrial clusters. Lessons learned from experiences with Japanese, Dutch and Norwegian projects should be examined.

- Policy should be developed which reflects the system value of the “negative emissions” that EfW with CCUS can provide. A more detailed option and techno-economic analysis should be carried out which focuses on the technical options available for decarbonising EfW plants, the economic sensitivities to changes in residual waste quality/price, and which reviews the relative strengths of modern waste management and treatment options from a lifecycle analysis and cost perspective.

In the UK Generating energy from waste plants (incinerators) has helped the move away from landfill and makes sense when the alternative is power from fossil fuels. But the UK could save £6.2 billion by 2050 and avoid the need to build 20 new incinerators by achieving higher recycling rates, it is argued.

There are number of ways of generating energy from waste. These include combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion and landfill gas recovery.

- Combustion is where heat produced by burning waste produces heat, driving a turbine to generate electricity. This indirect approach to generation currently has an efficiency of around 15-27%, albeit with a lot of potential for improvements..

DECENTRALISED GRID BOOSTER HAS POSITIVE IMPLICATIONS FOR THE UK ENERGY TO WASTE SECTOR

The transmission system operator Amprion will soon connect the world’s first decentralised grid booster in E.ON’s distribution grid.

The modular battery storage systems stabilise the electricity grid, reduce interventions and thus save costs for grid customers.

The first system will be implemented in the area of LEW Verteilnetz (LVN), a regional grid operator of the E.ON Group.

Amprion and E.ON developed the concept as part of their co-operation, which has been in place since the end of 2020.

The aim of the co-operation is, among other things, the joint development of innovative operating resources for system stability.

The Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) has now given Amprion the green light to implement the new grid booster concept.

“We are delighted to have received confirmation from the BNetzA for this innovative technology. The decentralised grid booster will help Amprion and E.ON to keep the electricity grid stable and at the same time reduce the costs of grid interventions and thus the grid fees,” comments Amprion CEO Hans Jürgen Brick.

“I very much appreciate the close cooperation between E.ON and Amprion. The energy infrastructure of the transmission and distribution system operators is of outstanding importance for achieving the climate policy goals of the government.”

EMERGENCY POWER FOR ONE OF SCOTLAND’S MOST SUSTAINABLE RECYCLING PLANTS

GENESAL ENERGY has provided emergency power in the form of a GEN1500YC for one of Scotland’s most sustainable recycling plants.

A company spokesman from Genesal Energy explains: “We participated in the construction of one of the most modern and sustainable urban waste treatment plants in Scotland (transforming non-recyclable municipal waste into clean energy) through the manufacture, design and supply of a bespoke generator set, the GEN1500YC..

“The manufacturing process was carried out after carrying out a preliminary study of the work, analysing every technical aspect of the future plant until the appropriate solution was found to guarantee supply at all times and in all situations.”

The project was tailor-made.

Genesal designed Black Start medium-voltage equipment - its objective is to power a motor that rotates the main turbine, an element that is used to start the turbine after a scheduled stop of the turbine.

The generator also has to directly supply power in medium voltage (11000 V).

tlas Copco Power and Flow has launched five new models of its industry-leading lithium-ion Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The new units take modular energy storage to a new level, expanding the spectrum of suitable applications, and providing customers with increased options for power. The state-of-the-art systems, which have been designed with sustainability in mind, are suited to noise-sensitive environments, such as events, metropolitan construction sites, telecom, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas and rental applications, and enable operators to dramatically reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The additions to Atlas Copco’s portfolio include a larger ZBC 300-300 unit and a smaller line of battery-based storage systems, the ZPB 45-60, ZBP 45-75, ZBP 15-60 models, and the ZBP 2000 with two flexible solar panels. With a complete offer of ESS, users will now benefit from increased flexibility and versatility in their operations, with both stand-alone and hybrid solutions across their sites.

These cutting-edge energy storage systems are said to be ideal for applications with a high energy demand and variable load profiles, as they successfully cover both low loads and peaks. For example, they can properly size cranes and other electric motors, and successfully manage peaks in energy demand for noise-sensitive events and for electric vehicles (EV) recharging stations. Furthermore, operators can synchronise several models, which can become the heart of any microgrid, storing and delivering energy coming from several energy sources, including renewables.

Small ZBP units - the ZPB 45-60, ZBP 45-75 and ZBP 15-60 - present a new design, are modular, mobile, and up to 70% lighter in weight than other battery systems, and so can easily be moved around site to provide clean and quiet energy where required. They are ideal for applications such as events and telecom, and can work alone in island mode, or can be coupled with a diesel generator to provide a hybrid solution with significant energy savings. The ZBP models are easy to use and install and have lower maintenance needs than a standalone diesel generator, which translates into a reduced total cost of ownership (TCO). Featuring advanced high-density lithium-ion batteries, these energy storage systems provide excellent performance with over 12 hours of power from a single charge, and they can be fully charged in less than one hour (depending on the model).

ZBP 2000 is a fully sustainable portable solution as it comes with two foldable solar panels which could be used to recharge the unit in great weather conditions or to maintain a proper battery level during less efficient production days. It is suitable for small events and small construction sites, providing silent operation and zero emissions while working with solar energy. Up to five units can easily be joined in parallel to provide users with higher power levels of up to 10kW. Compact and lightweight, with a footprint of 1m3, this unit is robust enough to withstand conditions typically found on construction sites. The ZBP 2000 has IK09 impact resistance classification and an Ingress Protection rating of IP65, meaning it provides exceptional protection from dust and water, so users can be confident it provides excellent reliable performance in harsh environments.

RESCUED COMPANY TO SELL BATTERIES TO MILITARY The new owners of collapsed firm Britishvolt are planning to use the Northumberland site to supply batteries to the military.

Recharge Industries bought Britishvolt after it went into administration earlier this year.

Since then Recharge has been in negotiation with administrators EY to also secure use of the site near Blyth.

Securing use of the site is the crucial first step in Recharge’s plan to build batteries for military, heavy

“We can also install external transformers using medium voltage switchgear or supply special medium voltage switchgear, such as a generator neutral grounding or power output cell with circuit breaker for protection.

“This was the case in the group chosen for the recycling plant: we integrate these cells in the same container as the equipment in a separate room and with a cable outlet prepared for a very convenient connection by the customer.”

The spokesman concludes: “In the light of those circumstances, the generator set was designed to act as a starter for the gas turbine of the power plant. It also had to act as an essential emergency supply in the event of a power stoppage.”

NEWS PROVIDING A BACKUP POWER GENSET FOR A CREMATORIUM IN ANDOVER

THE MEDWORTH ENERGY FROM WASTE CHP FACILITY - WILL IT ULTIMATELY GET THE THUMBS-UP?

EMS received a call one weekend from a new crematorium in Andover which had an official opening the following week. The client invested £6.5m in a new purpose-built crematorium, office and client care facilities in Andover, Hampshire. The state-of-the-art building is nestled in a mature parkland setting to provide a sense of privacy and calm.

The client advised there was a delay with the completion of their mains connections as initially planned. Therefore there was a need for last-minute temporary power to ensure the crematorium could open. The client advised that they had planned cremations booked following the opening and these could not go ahead without power being sourced.

The upshot was that MEMS had to urgently supply a 200kVA temporary generator with a bulk fuel tank and associated cables to the crematorium. MEMS provided an immediate response to deliver all equipment, along with a team, to install and connect to a single point within the grounds. This then linked to several 63A points for each of the cremators, providing the primary source of power to the entire site. MEMS Connect was an essential addition to this client; the remote monitoring of the equipment and itsp erformance was crucial while the site was relying on the power provided by the generator.

Out of hours refuelling management was required due to the sensitive nature of the site and its visitors. This was fulfilled by the MEMS in-house team of fuel drivers using MEMS tankers.

To complete the MEMS proactive servicing regime, arrangements were made with the client to complete out of hours servicing to ensure as little disruption as possible. Once MEMS temporary equipment was installed, this allowed for the crematorium to be opened and for the planned cremations to take place.

The hire continued for approximately five weeks until the mains connection was available and made.

At the end of the rental period, the MEMS Solutions Team worked closely with the crematorium to ensure the de-installation and collection of the equipment was carried out in a sensitive manner, and to ensure all works were completed outside of hours in order not to cause any disruption or dismay to their grieving visitors.

MVV Environment wants to build a new waste-to-energy incinerator in the UK - if permission is granted over the next few months it will be one of the biggest in Europe.

MVV believes that saving waste from landfill and burning would help generate energy for local industrial use. The incinerator is earmarked for the Algores Way Industrial Estate in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, close to the route of the A47.

The plan is to burn up to 625,600 tonnes of non-recyclable household, commercial and industrial waste each year.

This could generate more than 50 million watts of electricity and up to 30 million watts of steam heat to be used by nearby industrial companies at a “competitive” price, or the National Grid.

The company says some waste from the East of England is currently being exported to Europe where it is being used as fuel.

SOUTH HUMBER EFW PLANT OPERATIONAL BY 2027 Work on a £300m energy from waste power station near Stallingborough, between Immingham and Grimsby, in North East Lincolnshire is going well, according to reports.

Built next to the existing South Humber Bank power station and produce electricity for around 100,000 homes when it becomes operational in 2025.

The site will generate around 95MW from 750,000 tonnes of domestic waste per annum, say the planners.

Developer EP UK Investments is a subsidiary of Europe’s sixth largest power generator EPH. The Czech company acquired 2.2GW gas-fired power stations from

Combined Heat and Power Facility, based on the name of the council ward where it could be built.

MVV Environment reports that than £300 million will be spent, with the construction creating 700 jobs and then 40 full-time skilled jobs once it is up and running. Building the site will take three years, says the company.

The company also runs smaller waste incineration plants in Kent, Dundee and Plymouth.

It is owned by German-based company MVV Energie which operates a similar sized facility in Mannheim, Germany to the one proposed for Wisbech.

Five authorities - Wisbech Town Council, Fenland District Council, King’s Lynn Borough Council, Norfolk county and Cambridgeshire county councils - have opposed the incinerator scheme. as well as North East Cambridgeshire MP and Health Minister Steve Barclay who has also added his opposition.

If the plan gets the green light the site could be functional by 2027.

Centrica in 2017 and commissioned a 420MW biomass power station at Lynemouth. Aecom is acting as civil engineering consultant on the project.

A KEYNOTE SPEAKER Keynote speaker atthe Conference is THE RT. HON DR ALAN WHITEHEAD MP Dr. Alan Whitehead is a British politician who has served as Member of Parliament for Southampton Test since 1997.

A member of the Labour Party, he has been Shadow Minister for Energy Security, previously Green New Deal and Energy, since 2015.

He served as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions from 2001 to 2002.

Dr Whitehead has lobbied for the increased use of sustainable energy sources, particularly microgeneration.

He criticised the results of the Energy Review, and was the co-author of EDM 2204 which states ‘the case for nuclear has not yet been made’ and urges the government to ‘recognise the enormous potential for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by energy efficiency and conservation, greater use of combined heat and power, and rapid investment in the full range of renewable technologies, including microgeneration.

As leader of Southampton City Council in 1986, Whitehead proposed that the city council take measures to become a ‘self sustaining city’ with regard to energy generation.

One such measure was the conversion of Southampton Civic Centre to being heated by local reservoirs of geothermal energy.

Dr Whitehead sits as a non-executive director of a non-profit making company, SSEL Ltd, formed to deliver a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) project, which was partially funded by the Government as part of the regeneration of outer Shirley.

The CHP system recycles the by-product ‘low grade heat’ made during the electricity generation process and uses the byproduct to heat water.

Combermere Abbey, Whitchurch, is a wellknown wedding venue in Cheshire. The site recently acquired a CPS Alpha Series Scaniapowered 365 KVA prime rated generator for an emergency backup power application.

The genset features a Scania DC13 072A 02-11 engine, coupled with a Mecc Alte alternator housed in a soundproof canopy for noise reduction. This project was time-critical as the site needed the generator in place for March - the start of the Wedding season.

After site visits and constant communication between the client CPS ensured that the generator specification matched the customers’ needs and the demands of the venue.

The customer wanted an option to run the generator for a full day during the wedding season so a 1,200 litre fuel tank was fitted.

The clients also required reduced sound levels to prevent the issue of any noise potentially affecting wedding celebrations.

Stephen Lucas, Technical Sales Manager for CPS, commented: “We were able to increase sound attenuation to reduce DBA to 65 at 1 metre. CPS built, installed and commissioned the generator onsite. WHITE PAPER DISCUSSES STAGE VI & EURO 7 TECHNOLOGIES EMINOX explains that the forthcoming Stage VI emissions standards will be a critical element in the ongoing quest for improving air quality, and how essential it is to understand the impact it will have on the technology required.

critical element in the ongoing quest for improving air quality will be the forthcoming Stage VI emissions standards. It is essential to understand the impact it will have on the technologies required to comply.

The Stage VI regulation, like the current Stage V legislation, is expected to focus on reducing emissions harmful to health such as hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

However, anticipated alignment with the recent Euro 7 directive means Stage VI is unlikely to directly address carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Over the last few years significant effort and refinement has gone into the development of Euro 7 regulation resulting in well-defined emissions targets and an introduction date of July 2025 for light duty, and July 2027 for heavy duty applications.

Now the content of the Euro 7 regulation is established, the definition of Stage VI regulations is expected to be, in comparison, a shorter and less controversial process, the company points out.

The Euro 7 regulation is likely to significantly influence Stage VI, which should drive a similar level of technology development to meet either standard. The introduction date for Stage VI is likely to trail Euro 7 by approximately two years, leading to a probable introduction timeline of 2029-2030.

However, there is more to the future of

emissions reduction than Euro 7 and Stage VI, reports EMINOX. Perhaps the most significant consideration for the future is how alternative fuels will enable the net zero transmission and how the technologies that support this are developed.

Much work is being done to increase the global understanding of this, not least research projects that Eminox is involved in with UK based universities, and its own independent research too.

What is clear however, is that there is still a place for the internal combustion engine (ICE), albeit powered by net zero fuels. These fuels will include hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, e-diesel, biodiesel, and fugitive methane.

Many of these fuels are reliant on one common element, hydrogen. Without an abundance of hydrogen from low carbon sources it is not possible to synthesise low carbon ammonia, methanol, or e-diesel.

Whilst net zero fuels may solve some of the global challenges being faced, it will not remove the need for emissions technologies and different exhaust aftertreatment system architecture.

However, it’s important to recognise that the types of exhaust aftertreatment systems will vary for each different fuel type.

To that end, Eminox is making considerable investment to develop these systems which support the net zero drive and the switch to alternative fuels, which is far more complex than most would have envisaged.

Looking at the exhaust aftertreatment system Eminox’s focus is still very much on continuous improvement of its exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) technologies to ensure diesel and gas engines operating in on-road, marine, construction, rail and power generation industries comply with the latest emissions regulations. Eminox is also dedicated to exploring powertrains of the future and the impact of their requirements for next generation emissions reduction technologies.

Perhaps more consideration needs to be given to a statement in the EU Green Deal which sets a goal for the EU ‘to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050’ which will require ‘ambitious changes in transport’.

Whether these changes are occurring in a cohesive manner for the power generation industry is yet to be demonstrated.

Currently, it appears private industry is leading the development of pioneering technologies to further lower emissions beyond the limits set in regulations and to explore the full potential of alternative and net zero fuels to make the necessary ‘ambitious changes in transport’.

Finding the balance of driving forward emissions regulations and best utilising the solutions already available must be a primary consideration. This is where developments in emissions reduction technologies can transform key sectors in industry and pioneer emissions reduction to make a significant impact on public health, whilst improving air quality.

CHESTERFIELD ROYAL HOSPITAL’S BACKUP POWER WB Power Services was awarded the opportunity to specify, design and install a standby power solution for Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust hospital. The role of the gensets was providing vital backup power for the facility in case of a power failure.

The design brief involved the replacement of two key substations, backed by standby generation complete with mains generator changeover, load bank connection point and output LV switchgear.

hesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides general acute services for a population of over 400,000 to people living throughout North Derbyshire and beyond.

To provide some measure of its capacity, Chesterfield has 15 wards and over 500 beds, in the year to the end of March 2023 it looked after more than 32,000 people following planned operations. The staff saw nearly 300,000 people in outpatient clinics, and treated more than 100,000 people in the A&E unit, all delivered by over 5,000 staff and volunteers.

WB Power Services was involved in the project design, providing optimised transformer and switchgear solutions, customised Kohler generating sets and associated control systems and provided WB’s Principal Contractor package which includes all electrical installation and civil works.

The early design brief issued by the client sought for the replacement of two key substations, backed by standby generation complete with mains generator changeover, load bank connection point and output LV switchgear. Additionally, the generators were

to be configured such that either generator could feed the other package and hence building. The package there included: • Two package substation (one for each building) • Provision of N+1 standby generation • LV Switchgear • Electrical Installation • Development of control system philosophy and associated system software development • Civil works • Full design and project management of the site and associated works.

With power densities continuing to increase the client wished to minimise the overall footprint of each substation and generator package.

WB Power Services identified that a 1000kVA 800kWe prime (PRP) rated generating set offered the optimum capacity and flexibility to meet the client’s current and foreseeable needs. WB matched this requirement to Kohler’s KD1100.

12-cylinder, 27-litre KD27V12-5DES engine can comfortably deliver the full power required.

The sets were provided with a dual battery, dual battery charger and dual starter motor arrangement for enhance starting reliability and a 200-hour lube oil make up tank to ensure safe long term continuous running of the sets.

The two generating sets were housed in their own custom-made acoustic containers rated to achieve a noise level of 65dBA @1m FFC (both sets running).

These came complete with fire detection, fuel shut off valve and all internal lighting and ventilation.

To minimise the footprint of the entire package the container housing the generator was designed to accommodate a penthouse-style inlet and horizontal discharge arrangement.

The dual roof mounted exhaust gas silencers were arranged for high level vertical discharge.

The key adaptation for these sets was the addition of a dual output circuit breaker package which was designed to facilitate the traditional load breaker and local LV load bank testing for each individual set.

The generating sets were deployed in an N configuration with typically one generating set dedicated to feed its own building within the site.

The client expressed a preference for the use of a ComAp control system on both the generating sets and switchgear.

The generating sets were fitted with the ComAp Intelligen system configured for soft mains return.

The ComAp control system also offers a comprehensive range of remote monitoring & status interface options which include RS485 and Modbus etc which are available via volt free connections, ethernet or fibre optic connections. In this application the generating sets are connected to the onsite BMS system.

To reduce the overall footprint of each package it was decided to move away from the more conventional day tank, bulk tank and fuel distribution system.

A “structural belly tank” solution was developed that would sit under each generating set. The tanks were sized at 5,000l (24-hours full load running) usable capacity to meet the client’s operational requirements can came complete with a fuel fill point and fuel polishing system.

NEW FULLY INTEGRATED BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM BEING BUILT IN SOUTH WALES Field has broken ground at its Newport battery storage site in South Wales.

The renewable energy infrastructure company has signed contracts with two key partners to build the 40 MWh site, reports UKPN.

ield has signed contracts with two key partners to construct the 40 MWh site in South Wales, which will contribute to the UK’s efforts to decarbonise energy supply.

Field has has appointed Clarke Energy to handle construction, installation and supply of balance of plant while Trina Storage will provide a fully integrated battery storage system for the site.

The news follows Field’s recent £200m funding round led by DIF Capital Partners. With contracts signed, the Newport site is expected to be up and running in the latter part of 2024.

Founded in 2021, Field is dedicated to building the renewable energy infrastructure needed to

reach net zero, starting with battery storage.

Field’s first battery storage site, in Oldham (20 MWh), commenced operations in 2022.

A further four sites across the UK totalling 210 MWh are either in or preparing for construction, including Field Newport.

Field also recently announced its expansion into Italy, with the aim of building a multi-gigawatt portfolio in strategic locations across the country.

Field selected Clarke Energy for Field Newport based on the company’s extensive track record in delivering complex energy solutions and its project management expertise. Clarke Energy has implemented over £3bn worth of projects around the world, with more than 8 GWe

ohammed Alzamli, Paralleling Switchgear Product Manager for ABB, explores the inherently complex challenge of managing microgrids and the role of intelligent paralleling switchgear in helping tie a microgrid’s multiple energy assets together with the grid to costeffectively produce energy and maintain grid stability.

Mohammed Alzamli’s report is as follows: The energy crisis is driving a desire for energy self-sufficiency among businesses.

For many, the answer to relying less on the grid lies in the adoption of renewable technologies, brought together as a distributed energy resource ecosystem – or microgrid.

In fact, ABB’s recent global Energy Insights Survey confirmed that 83 percent of business leaders are concerned about the security of their business energy supply and are looking at ways to mitigate this.

The same survey showed that 40 percent of respondents were looking to install onsite renewable energy generation measures to become less dependent on the grid, and microgrids were cited as one of the more popular solutions.

At the same time, the market value of microgrids is anticipated to increase from US$26.3B in 2021 to US$85.7B by 2030.

This will be driven by renewable energy integration in the Americas and Europe and increasing demand for off-grid electricity and

government-funded programs in the Asia Pacific, Middle East, and African regions.

Improving the resiliency of distribution networks A microgrid comprises a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources with clearly defined electrical boundaries. It acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid and can connect and disconnect from the grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected or island modes – IEEE 2030.7 It is a localised and miniature version of the broader power grid network that is self-sufficient and an autonomous energy system, incorporating generation (gas/steam generators, solar, wind combined heat and power), battery storage and demand within a bounded and controlled power network.

This will help to protect the facility’s power network, in the case of increasing utility outages due to aging equipment, weather-related events, or human operator errors.

Decarbonization As businesses focus on decarbonisation and meeting their sustainability targets by specific dates, microgrids will provide the infrastructure to reach these goals by integrating renewable energy sources in the absence of non-renewable sources. Integrating renewable sources, such as wind turbines, solar panels, hydropower, or gas &

Reducing energy costs for end users or providing revenue In most cases, microgrids lower the cost of energy for the end users by using a clean energy source or onsite generators during the more expensive peak time from the grid power.

In other cases, it can produce revenue by exporting power to the grid.

A smart microgrid can utilise the fluctuation of the grid energy pricing throughout the day and allow the onsite connected resources to supply power to the load to reduce the cost of energy bought from the grid.

The challenge of protecting and controlling multiple energy sources Improving the performance of microgrid technology at the load level is a key area of investment for manufacturers, looking to overcome the complexity of protecting and controlling multiple interconnected distributed energy sources.

The latest microgrid systems provide an integrated platform for micro-resourcebased distributed generators of power, storage solutions, loads and voltage course converters - all within a compact footprint.

Power imbalance, voltage and frequency fluctuations, and grid stability are all key areas of interest for operators looking to optimise the performance of microgrids.

Fault clearing and protection co-ordination between the grid and the distributed energy resources are other considerations for microgrid operators.

Power imbalance and grid fluctuations can happen when switching a microgrid system from a grid-tied to a standalone mode.

Power stability issues within microgrid setups can occur because of decreased system inertia, lower voltage stability as a result of reduced energy distribution, and lower frequencies’ oscillations due to a shift in the power-sharing ratio.

Optimising microgrid performance to ensure power availability also requires technology that can carefully monitor and manage multiple power sources in parallel. This is the role of paralleling switchgear (PSG).

As the ‘brain’ of the switchgear control and operation, PSG is the technology that makes sense of what is happening within a microgrid set-up. When used correctly, it can optimize how renewable energy generated from multiple sources is fed into, stored, and consumed by the microgrid end user.

GET ON THE SMART BUS WITH UPS SYSTEMS Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) were originally developed to improve mains power reliability. They then evolved to become more efficient because of the “environmentally friendly” movement of the 1990s and more “available” when business and society became increasingly more reliant on technology in the 2000s. Nowadays, the evolutionary imperative is sustainability, but not at the expense of availability, writes David Bond, Chairman, Centiel UK.

A

vailability has increased over time to the 99.9999999% (9-nines) we see today with the likes of true modular UPS: CumulusPowerTM and StratusPowerTM. This has been achieved by simultaneously reducing repair times and increasing reliability by removing single points, but how?

The very highest availability UPS systems can have no single points of failure and must have redundancy which, in a UPS system, this means paralleled UPS modules with multiple, independent connections between modules and separate, intelligent decision-making logic or ‘brain’ in each individual module.

The simplest paralleled UPS system comprises two UPS communicating with each other usually in a Master/Slave configuration.

A communication “bus” is used to transport the required data between the two UPS. If a red London Bus breaks down or there are road works blocking the route, delivery of passengers from points A to B is not possible.

Similarly, if the cable connection between the two UPS modules breaks, control data cannot be

transmitted from the Master’s ‘brain’ to the slave module and the system fails.

Clearly, a single cable between two UPS is a potential single point of failure.

To overcome this, and to increase system resilience, parallel UPS typically use a ring bus (like the electrical ring circuit at home). With two routes to the same point, if one route is broken, the data takes the other route.

To increase system resilience even further, Centiel developed a Triple-Mode Bus with three independent and separate communication paths, or ring circuits, between each UPS. To continue with the London Bus analogy: if something goes wrong with one bus there are always another two buses to get on.

If there are road works, there is always another route. If a driver becomes ill there are always other drivers. The chances of all three buses being simultaneously unavailable is immeasurably small.

To achieve the ultimate level of availability, the challenges associated with the Master/ Slave relationship also needed to be resolved.

“The simplest paralleled UPS system comprises two UPS communicating with each other usually in a Master/Slave configuration.

A communication “bus” is used to transport the required data between the two UPS.”

A slave module relies on data supplied from the Master, so if the Master fails so does the slave.

A hierarchy of multi-masters, where if the Master-in-charge fails, a former slave immediately becomes the Master incharge and so on helps.

However, the system’s decision-making logic still rests with the Master in-charge and, much like dictators in history, the Master does not always take decisions in the best interest of the whole.

An alternative is Distributed Active Redundant Architecture or DARA. The ‘Active’ component of DARA means the control logic of each UPS module is fully independent with its own self isolating intelligence or ‘brain’ which, when working together with other modules, enables majority decision making to happen.

For example, if one UPS module has a problem and wants to bypass but none of the others do, the “good” modules will out-vote the problem module which will instantaneously disconnect itself from the system so the whole system can continue to operate normally.

So, the key to achieving the ultimate level of UPS availability hinges on both the democratic decision-making process of DARA and the ‘belt and braces’ way the modules communicate with each other using the Triple-Mode Bus. As manufacturers, Centiel’s team has historically led the way in the UPS industry.

1150KWE LANDFILL GAS GENSET REFURBISHED & REINSTALLED As part of a technical contract YELLOW POWER took a 1150kWe Landfill Gas package, comprehensively refurbished and upgraded it and then reinstalled it at a landfill site. The company replaced the instrumentation wiring and upgrading the fuel system to a Woodward 110 Tecjet and EGS02 system, reports UKPN.

ellow Power’s refurbishment contract involved refurbishing a gas genset on a landfill site in the UK. Specifically, its engineering team worked on a G3516LE Containerised Landfill Package and replaced the instrumentation wiring and upgraded the set’s fuel system to a Woodward 110 Tecjet and EGS02 system - this was to cope with fluctuations in both fuel pressure, and CH4 content of the landfill gas which fuelled the engine.

A specially-designed acoustic container was manufactured to house the generator,

incorporating a separate control room at one end and being acoustically treated to give a performance of 75d(B)A at 1m.

Time was taken at this stage to consult with the client’s operations team to ensure that not only did the Yellow Power team iron out any issues with similar packages, but also include features to ease the client’s regular maintenance tasks.

The resulting package incorporated a roofmounted horizontal dry cooler, internal ventilation fans to satisfy combustion and cooling air requirements, and a lagged stainless steel exhaust silencer system.

“ The operator of a G3516LE Landfill gas generator unit required it to be repackaged into a fully selfcontained unit, giving them a far more flexible power generation asset and ease of relocation if needed.”

This was then connected on site to a twin wall flue that discharged resultant exhaust gases to atmosphere at high level.

Control of the generator is now handled by a bespoke panel with touch screen interface, Motor Control Centre (MCC) and synchronising breaker section.

This was designed and manufactured to fit neatly in one end of the package. All site electrical interfaces and connections were made through the floor at this end, whilst essential fluid connections to site services were through suitably sized bulkhead pipework connections above ground level.

Once on site, due to the modular design, installation, assembly and commissioning was completed by Yellow Power engineers in a matter of days, with the generator ready for testing ahead of schedule.

Careful planning and programming of this project ensured that removal of the generator, packaging, testing, installation through to successfully passing its G59 mains protection test was completed in a period of just 13 weeks.

• We have supported and attended a Webinar on 11th September organised by our Academic Partner in India, the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, when our President Ian Macafee gave an introductory talk. It was the Inaugural Programme for the IPowerE SRM Student Chapter. This included a lecture on Grid solutions and Energy Transition also a lecture on Nuclear Power. There were circa 180 attendees.

• Continuing with our 100 Year tradition of the original WCR in 1923 we have issued the August 2023 Operational Report providing the analysis of power generation operational data for conventional technologies, renewable power including Wind, Hydro, Solar and Energy Storage. This is a “must read”report.

• We have issued the September 2023 edition of Power Engineer with latest industry reports, articles and technical papers. IPowerE Policy Post COP26 - A Brief Statement The UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) has highlighted that an unprecedented shift in progress will be needed to enable governments worldwide achieve Net Zero Strategies by 2050.

ADE EVIDENCE ON THE FUTURE OF THE FLEXIBLE GRID HAS BEEN PUBLISHED

BY COMMITTEE The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee has published written evidence submitted by the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE), answering its inquiry regarding a flexible grid for the future.

Sarah Honan, Flexibility Policy Manager at the ADE, said: “It is great to see our evidence published by the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee in their latest inquiry into delivering a flexible grid for the future - this is essential to ensuring electricity supply and demand can be balanced as more renewables come onto the grid.”

She explains: “Prioritising flexibility will not only save millions of pounds for the taxpayer by avoiding unnecessary grid infrastructure but will also directly create a more modern and reliable energy system that empowers households and businesses to maximise the value they can gain from their energy use.

We hope that our written evidence will ensure that the government recognises the true value of low carbon forms of flexibility, which are key to making

75% of decentralised energy businesses say PM has damaged confidence An overwhelming 75% of decentralised energy sector professionals and businesses have voiced a significant erosion of confidence in the wake of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement which diluted crucial net zero policies.

This marks a shift in a sector that is making meaningful headway in modernising and strengthening the UK’s energy system.

ADVANCED UPS SYSTEM INSTALLED ON GUERNSEY, Leading Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) supplier CENTIEL has completed a project to deploy its award-winning 4th generation, three-phase, modular UPS system CumulusPowerTM in three of Sure’s Tier III data centres on Guernsey.

UTILITY GRADE BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE IS MOBILE & MODULAR

The TerraCharge platform consists of two separate trailermobile modules, the Mobile Battery Trailer and the Power Conversion System (PCS) Trailer.

By separating the battery energy storage module from the power conversion unit, the energy storage system provides customers with a modular solution, along with the flexibility to scale to the specific energy storage capacity requirements of their application.

Many of the challenges associated with modern grid operations are not static and are best served by mobile storage solutions. TerraCharge is designed to meet the mobile energy storage needs of utilities, industrial customers, and power producers.

TerraCharge’s unique modular approach segregates the BESS into separate trailer-mobile battery storage and power conversion units. This modular approach offers a high level of flexibility and scalability to customers.

Multiple battery storage units can be paired with a single PCS unit to scale as needed to meet the power requirements of the application. Additional PCS units can be added to projects that require even more energy capacity.

The PCS trailer contains all of the infrastructure (such as inverters, transformers, and switchgear) needed to interface the mobile battery trailer with grid following (peak shaving, renewable storage) or grid forming (mobile EV charging, backup power) applications.

The PCS unit supports a wide range of voltage classes, including 120/208 V, 277/480 V, 4k V, 13k V, 27k V, and 33k V.
