TRANSFORMER WINDINGS SPECIALIST BOUGHT BY BRUSH UK energy engineering solutions provider, BRUSH Group, has acquired renowned European transformer windings specialist Co.Bo.T srl for an undisclosed sum.

The deal allows BRUSH to secure a vital link in its supply chain and creates extra production capacity to support the expansion of the UK electricity grid for years to come. With increasing demand for power transformers, driven by the transition to net zero, acquiring Co.Bo.T also has the potential to optimise lead-times for BRUSH customers keen to connect to the grid.

Based near Vicenza in Northern Italy, Co.Bo.T supplies major transformer manufacturers across Western Europe – including BRUSH – and has built a strong reputation as a winding specialist in the 33kV-132kV bracket. Last year the firm invested in a major upgrade to its production line and has proven capacity to handle the entire sub-assembly manufacturing process.

And following a commitment to a multi-million-pound investment in its state-ofthe-art testing facilities in Loughborough, Leicestershire, BRUSH is increasing its own in-house capabilities within final assembly and testing, ensuring its transformers continue to meet the highest standards and specifications.

Construction begins on Peel’s Mersey Heat Energy Centre Renewable energy company Vital Energi is building an energy facility to supply low carbon heat and hot water for up to 6,700 homes and 1.3m sq ft of commercial space.

Construction has started to deliver the Mersey Heat Energy Centre at Peel Waters’ Liverpool Waters site off Great Howard Street. Peel NRE is behind the scheme.

The centre will provide heat and power to the wider Liverpool Waters development, as well as surrounding areas. Liverpool Waters is a large-scale £5.5bn project, which benefits from planning permission to build a mixed-use city district across 148 acres at Princes Dock.

Led by district heat network specialist Ener-Vate, the Mersey Heat Energy Centre will feature two 3MW water source heat pumps that would work on an ‘open loop’ system to take heat from water from the Leeds-Liverpool canal. This heat would be used to warm surrounding homes and businesses within six kilometres.

The initial first phase of Peel NRE’s Mersey Heat network project could supply 20GWh of heat every year, with planning permission secured to expand to supply around 45GWh – the equivalent of supplying heating and hot water to 17,000 homes.

Andrew Wightman, pre-construction director at Vital Energi, says: “Projects like Liverpool Waters, which fully embrace renewable energy, will be fundamental to Liverpool, and the UK in general, meeting their net zero targets.

“The energy centre has been designed to expand alongside the Liverpool Waters development, so will play a pivotal part in the long-term green future of Liverpool’s dockside.”

Chris Capes, director for development at Liverpool Waters, comments: “Part of our approach involves a focus on building efficiency and the implementation of ambitious site-wide strategies.

“This new energy centre, part of the wider Mersey Heat network, will help to bring low-carbon heating and hot water to residents and commercial customers across Liverpool Waters.”

Reducing the reliance on fossil fuels, the scheme will save 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. This reduction in emissions will have the same impact as taking 1,000 cars off the roads.

Myles Kitcher, managing director of Peel NRE, said: “Finding alternative low-carbon sources of heat will be vital if we’re to stay on track to achieve net zero by 2050.

“This ambitious project has the potential to provide enough low carbon heat for over a fifth of the homes in Liverpool, cementing the city at the heart of the region’s decarbonisation journey.”

Planning permission was granted for the project in February 2021.

Work is expected to complete in September 2024.

NEWS WHARFEDALE HOSPITAL SOLAR SCHEME 8MW CONNECTION TO COWLEY BUS STATION FOR WILL SAVE TRUST £75,000 AREA ELECTRIFICATION

W

harfedale Hospital’s solar panel car park canopy will save its trust £75,000. This is thanks to more than 600 solar panels which have been installed on a new car park canopy at a West Yorkshire hospital.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) said the £1.1m project at Otley’s Wharfedale Hospital could save up to £75,000 each year as well as cutting carbon emissions.

According to the trust, the panels will reduce its demand for power from the National Grid by about 15%. It said the scheme would help towards NHS plans to reach net zero by 2040.

Craige Richardson, Director of Estates and Facilities at LTHT, said: “The solar canopy at the Wharfedale site exemplifies the trust’s dedication to both environmental sustainability and the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve.”

He added that with the increased energy demands associated with a proposed £15m elective care hub at the site the car park canopy was a “real positive”.

Funding for the solar panels came from the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the trust said.

The investment is part of the Trust’s long-term plans to develop services at Wharfedale Hospital, which also includes a proposed £15 m Elective Care Hub, incorporating two new theatres, a recovery area, and an admissions and discharge area, alongside making an existing ward operational overnight.

The Trust claims to have been at the forefront of investing in energy-efficient projects, with a commitment of over £22 million. These projects – including the canopy – have been made possible through successful Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme bids. The range of initiatives implemented to date includes the installation of heat pumps and LED lighting, building fabric upgrades, and connections to Leeds PIPES, a low-carbon district heating network.

Reid Cunningham, Business Development director – Energy, at BAM, said: “BAM has provided facilities management services at Wharfedale Hospital since 2004, and we’re delighted to have delivered this innovative solar canopy installation that will reduce the hospital’s carbon emissions by 43.7 tonnes per year. Installing the solar canopies above the hospital car park is a fantastic way of harnessing the untapped potential of this space, so that it not only provides a place for staff and patients to park, but also provides clean, renewable energy for the building.”

Mila Lopez Simon, Managing Director, UK&I at Invesis, added: “We are proud to have supported the Trust in delivering the solar photovoltaic canopy. EDF Renewables UK and Oxford Bus Company, part of The GoAhead Group, have signed an agreement for the provision of an 8MW connection to Cowley bus depot, enabling the introduction of an electric fleet of buses for Oxford.

The deal is the latest stage of the ambitious urban decarbonisation project, Energy Superhub Oxford.

The four-year project has seen innovations such as the creation of a first-of-a-kind battery storage system, a high-power private wire charging network and an electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at Redbridge Park & Ride.

With co-funding from Go Ahead, Oxfordshire County Council and the Department for Transport’s Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme, Oxford Bus Company has ordered 104 new electric buses to begin arriving on Oxford’s streets from late 2023.

To enable the buses to charge

overnight, depot charging infrastructure will be powered by the EDF Renewables UK substation at Oxford Bus Company’s Watlington Road depot. The substation was installed and connected in spring 2022 by EDF Renewables UK in anticipation of the agreement reached this month.

Luke Marion, Oxford Bus Company Managing Director, said: “Go-Ahead Group and Oxford Bus Company’s ambition to transition to a zeroemission fleet has been in planning for several years already. This agreement with EDF Renewables UK takes us one step closer to having more electric buses in Oxford, and is a key milestone.”

CONTRACT WIN FOR POWER PLANT DEVELOPMENT

Jacobs was awarded a new Project Management Resources (PMR) framework contract with EDF Nuclear Operations, licensee of eight power stations which account for approximately 16% of the U.K.’s electricity output.

Under an existing PMR framework, Jacobs supports operations at four Advanced Gascooled Reactor (AGR) stations; the transition from generation to defueling at another three AGR stations; and the operation and life extension program for the Sizewell B pressurized water reactor.

EDF estimates the value of the new two-year contract, which starts on Jan. 1, 2024, at more than US$53 million.

“Our commitment to supporting the U.K.’s nuclear power fleet helps communities to access sustainable,

emission-free energy generation,” said Jacobs Senior Vice President Karen Wiemelt.

“We will assist EDF to maximize generation from these vital national assets for the remainder of their operating lives and to support energy security and the target of achieving net-zero carbon by 2050.

“Simultaneously, we will assist the transition toward defueling and decommissioning at the stations which have ceased generating.”

Now in its ninth year, the existing PMR contract supports work for more than 200 project management, project engineering specialists and site team supervisors. The new framework is being contracted single source in recognition of performance over previous years. Jacobs is now recruiting for locations across the UK and welcomes applicants.

NEWS Sixteen companies win a share of £750,000

M

ore than £750,000 has been awarded to sixteen companies by Scottish Enterprise to strengthen Scotland’s green heat supply chain.

Recipients are developing new products or processes which will support the transition to low carbon heat or improve the thermal performance of buildings.

They include Aberdeenshire-based engineers Geothermal Energy Ltd, Hawick-headquartered manufacturers Turnbull & Scott and industrial heat pump developer and manufacturer Star Renewable Energy, located in Glasgow.

The funding is being distributed via the competitive CAN DO Innovation Green Heat Feasibility Call in the form of grants ranging from £30,000 to £50,000.

The call was funded by the Scottish Government through its Green Heat Innovation Support Programme, which aims to grow Scotland’s green heat market by stimulating innovation and investment.

Patrick Harvie, Minister for Zero Carbon Buildings, Active Travel and Tenants’ Rights said: “Through this programme the Scottish Government is helping to create an environment where our businesses are encouraged to develop new technologies that support our transition to net zero.

“I am pleased to see such a diverse range of projects being supported by our funding and I look forward to seeing the progress that will be made to further develop these solutions.”

Suzanne Sosna, director of economic opportunities at Scottish Enterprise, said: “Decarbonising heat will play a crucial role in meeting global net zero targets, creating opportunities for Scottish businesses in supply chain areas such as manufacturing, assembly, design, and consultancy and installation.

“This funding will help businesses that stand to benefit from the growth of green heat conduct detailed assessments of the feasibility of their solutions with a view to future commercial development.”

19 NEW BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE PROJECTS WILL PLUG INTO NATIONAL GRID National Grid is accelerating the connection of up to 20GW of clean energy projects to its electricity transmission and distribution networks in England and Wales as part of ongoing collaborative work across industry.

On its transmission network, 19 battery energy storage projects worth around 10GW will be offered dates to plug in averaging four years earlier than their current agreement, based on a new approach which removes the need for non-essential engineering works prior to connecting storage.

The new policy is part of National Grid’s connections reform initiative targeting transmission capacity, spearheaded by the ESO – which owns the contractual relationship with connecting projects – and actioned jointly with National Grid Electricity Transmission (ET), the part of the business which designs and builds the transmission infrastructure needed in England and Wales to plug projects in.

On its distribution network in the Midlands, South West of England and South Wales, the additional 10GW of unlocked capacity

announced recently is set to accelerate the connection of scores of low carbon technology projects, bringing forward some ‘shovel ready’ schemes by up to five years.

National Grid has already been in contact with more than 200 projects interested in fast tracking their distribution connection dates in the first wave of the capacity release, with 16 expressing an interest in connecting in the next 12 months and another 180 looking to connect within two to five years.

The accelerated 20GW equates to the capacity of six Hinkley Point C nuclear power stations and follows months of work and engagement with industry, Ofgem and government to find innovative solutions that will make plugging in clean energy projects faster and more flexible.

That includes collaborative action between Britain’s transmission and distribution networks – part of the Energy Networks Association (ENA)’s three-step plan for connections – to manage their technical interface more effectively to unlock gigawatts of capacity.

The new approach to transmission storage connections – a flagship policy in the ESO’s five-point plan to speed up connections – comes as National Grid ET undertakes an extensive review of projects in the connections pipeline in England and Wales to identify which can come forward based on new planning assumptions agreed with the ESO..

GHOST PROJECT IDENTIFIES TIDAL ENERGY SITES Nova Innovation, a leading tidal energy developer, is heading up a consortium to look at the potential of producing green hydrogen and oxygen from their tidal energy projects in Shetland.

The Scottish Government’s Emerging Energy Technologies Fund – Hydrogen Innovation Scheme will fund their GHOST Project (Green Hydrogen and Oxygen Supply from Tidal Energy).

The study will explore the use of hydrogen and oxygen for transport, domestic heating and industry in Shetland including the SaxaVord Space Centre.

The contract will see Nova and partners (The University of Strathclyde, Shetland Islands Council and Ricardo Energy), investigate potential markets for both the hydrogen and oxygen produced from electrolysis using Nova’s

tidal energy projects in Shetland.

Oxygen, an oft discarded by-product of green hydrogen production, is already used in aquaculture on Shetland and has the potential to be used by the SaxaVord Space Centre, creating a 100% renewable rocket fuel.

Unlike conventional hydrogen production methods that rely on fossil fuels, green hydrogen generated from renewable power, is a clean and sustainable alternative that has the potential to revolutionise the energy industry.

NEWS TWO 3,000 KVA DIESEL GENSET FOR A UK DATA CENTRE

T

wo 3,000 kVA diesel generators with QSK78 engines have been supplied toa UK data centre to provide backup power. Two bespoke designed & built acoustic enclosures each house a 3000 kVA Cummins QSK78 diesel generator, Fuel Tank, Switchgear and other ancillary equipment.

Built alongside the QSK60 in the UK , the QSK78 consists of a one-piece, cast-iron block with a bore of 6.69 inches, a stroke of 7.48 inches, and a displacement of 4,735 ci (77.6L). The block also utilizes wide cylinder spacing, which allows for multiple, full-life engine overhauls and improved coolant flow.

This Cummins® Power Generation commercial generator set is a fully integrated power generation system, providing optimum performance, reliability, and versatility for stationary standby, prime power, and continuous duty applications. FUNDING FOR COMMUNAL HEATING Switch2 Energy, the leading end-to-end provider of heat networks, has secured government funding from the second round of the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) to improve the efficiency and performance of its communal heating schemes across the UK. The £32 million government scheme is designed to support improvements in the performance of existing district and communal heating projects, with a focus on efficiency, improving customer experiences and preparing the sector for regulation.

After previously receiving significant funding in 2022, Switch2 has been awarded a share of £640,000 from the scheme in revenue grants, intended to conduct performance and efficiency reviews of its clients’ heat networks. These reviews will directly benefit over 1,100 residents over the Budenberg, Altrincham, and Park Hill heat networks, as well as the Fulham Reach heat network.

In addition, Switch2 has facilitated the allocation of a grant worth over £2.2 million to Leeds City Council. This capital grant, allocated in the first round of funding, will cover 50% of the total cost of improvement works and will significantly enhance the efficiency of heat networks serving 837 residents throughout the borough.

Drawing from recommendations provided by optimisation studies funded by the HNES during the demonstrator phase of the scheme, the Cottingley Heights & Towers, Ebor Gardens, and Saxton Gardens networks will utilise HNES capital funding to enhance their heat networks’ efficiency. As operator of the networks, Switch2 will be undertaking the necessary remedial works and improvements, which include upgrading insulation levels.

UK POWER NETWORKS - AWARDS FOR COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS

Collaborative projects by UK Power Networks employees have been recognised for their outstanding impact on the energy sector.

Valuable contributions were celebrated at the company’s annual Living Our Values staff awards, held in London and attended by over 300 people.

The night was capped off by a musical rendition led by Electric Harmony, the company’s in-house choir.

The ‘Tremendous Team’ award was granted for all involved in planning for the 2023-2028 regulatory funding process, where UK Power Networks submitted its Business Plan to Ofgem.

This team spanned departments from finance, strategy and regulation to network operations.

Paul Measday, regulatory compliance and reporting manager based in Crawley, was part of the award-winning team. “To be part of a team award is fantastic – the trophy came from leftfield, and it is great that UK Power Networks recognises its staff for the hard work they put in,” Paul said.

“The people in these departments and the wider company make it a great place to work and to see them

H2 SUPPLIES FOR NORTH WALES INFRASTRUCTURE? Wales & West Utilities (WWU) has announced plans to assess the capability of its existing North Wales infrastructure for transporting hydrogen as part of its future network planning strategy.

The plans could be implemented in the early 2030s to support UK and Welsh Government ambitions for industrial decarbonisation.

The feasibility study – delivered in partnership with Apollo Engineering – will provide a detailed assessment of the infrastructure needed to advance opportunities for hydrogen in Wrexham and Deeside. This will include links with HyNet – which is developing core hydrogen and carbon dioxide pipeline infrastructure for the North West

industrial cluster, with links in to North Wales.

WWU’s project will explore supply and demand scenarios, with the aim of understanding how much of the existing hydrogen rollout to industrial customers before 2030 and domestic customers after 2030.

NEWS MODULAR HEAT PUMP CONCEPT GARNERS NEARLY £1M in DESIGN, TEST & DEVELOPMENT FUNDS

etScientific Plc, the deep tech and life sciences VC investment group, has announced that its portfolio company Ventive has successfully closed a c.£900,000 investment. to support the completion of the design and test phase and factory build for Ventive’s modular heat pumps, further enhancements to its passive air ventilation product range, and build-up of its marketing and sales capacity to drive sales of its existing product range. The Ventive balance sheet is also streamlined following the conversion of the convertible loans.

Following completion of the Investment, the total equity holding of the NetScientific group in Ventive is 11.0% on a fully diluted basis, which includes the partial settlement of its corporate finance fees relating to the Investment.

Ventive designs and manufactures intelligent heating and ventilation solutions to make buildings healthy, comfortable, efficient, and affordable. Its products address two high priority markets segments: air quality and sustainable heating.

Ventive’s passive air ventilation system has been delivered to over 30 schools and five leisure centres, achieving excellent air quality results. Its novel heat pump product, which is in advanced stages of development, is a comprehensive solution for residential applications, with a unique modular design and a novel thermal store. CONTRACT MEANS POWERPACKS FOR TANKS TO BE DELIVERED BETWEEN NOW AND 20230

Rolls-Royce Power Systems has signed contracts with WFEL and Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) to deliver 523 mtu Series 199 engines for the Boxer Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme, between 2023 and 2030.

Rolls-Royce will deliver engine components to its subsidiary Rolls-Royce Solutions UK in East Grinstead where engine assembly, acceptance tests and painting will be carried out.

David Eaton, director – Governmental at Rolls-Royce Solutions UK, said: “We have been working energetically with our industry partners for a number of years to reach this point and are very much looking forward to delivering our engines to power these Britishbuilt infantry vehicles.”

For the fulfilment of the contract with WFEL, the Rolls Royce engines will be delivered to Huddersfieldbased David Brown Santasalo, a partner in WFEL’s Boxer programme, who will integrate the engines into the complete Boxer

Powerpack Assemblies, prior to delivery to WFEL. First delivery of the engines will take place later this year.

For RBSL, assembly and testing of the Boxer Powerpack (transmission, engine and cooling systems) will take place at its manufacturing site in Telford.

The engines will then be integrated into Boxer vehicles as part of RBSL and WFEL’s vehicle production plans at their respective UK facilities in Telford and Stockport.

Boxer MIV for the British Army will be the first version of the vehicle equipped with Rolls-Royce’s mtu 8V 199 TE21 engine, delivering 600KW, which is 70KW more than the mtu engines in previous versions of the vehicle. Increased power output allows for enhanced operational mobility and agility despite the vehicles’ higher weight due to improved protection. It also enables a higher electrical load.

The British Army will receive infantry carrier, specialist carrier, command post and ambulance variants of the vehicle.

A 2,750 kVA diesel genset with an MTU engine has been installed by the Shenton Group at a major UK hospital.

The HV 2750kVA MTU unit also features ancillary systems such as a bulk underground fuel tank, fuel transfer system, bespoke 70@1 attenuation and remote monitoring technology.

The 380V – 11 kV/50 Hz/ continuous power unit features economical fuel consumption with optimized 16V4000G34F/water charge air cooling.

GGUK Ltd with their Power Solution DDSL and in collaboration with its partners have designed, supplied and commissioned a 15 MW power plant at a South Atlantic remote island.

The power plant consists of two different locations. The main plant is comprised of five STX 6L27/38S medium speed engines coupled with AVK alternators at 11kV, control panel based on PLC microprocessor for each generator, HMI panel for supervision, oil centrifuge system, air starting system with redundancy compressor, exhaust gas heat exchange system, plate heat exchange, combustion air handling unit, fuel and oil tanks and Bruno patented remote cooling system .

The plant is designed to supply a constant 10 MW for 24/7 365 and represents the main source of power supply for the whole island, not only in terms of electricity, but also, thanks to the heat recovery system a complete and constant supply of hot water to the entire community .

The second plant is composed of three containerised generators equipped with Cummins QSK60G5 engines and LEROY SOMER alternators 400V connected with step up transformer 400V/11 kV . The plant is completed by PLC control panel, electric starting systems, fuel and oil tank and remote cooling systems.

This standby plant is designed to interface with the main plant and to supply the power in case of the unlikely event of failure of the main site. The interface between the two sites is managed by a complex system of PLC and redundant connections, designed by Bruno, bringing the security to the highest possible level..

According to Cummins each QSK60G5 engine is a state of the art lean burn engine which utilises Miller cycle combustion and full authority electronic engine management system that provides low emissions and high efficiency of up to 43.8%.

The PowerCommand 3.3 Generator set control is standard equipment, providing total generator set system integration including full paralleling capability in grid or load share mode, precise frequency and voltage regulation, alarm and status message display, AmpSentry™ protection, output metering, autoshutdown at fault detection and a user interface panel installed onto the generator set. Optional remote operator panels are also available.

The generator set is equipped with the capability to interface with a remote radiator or heat exchanger. Several alternator sizes offer selectable voltage and temperature rise with low reactance 2/3 pitch windings; low waveform distortion with non-linear loads, fault clearing short circuit capability, bearing and stator RTD’s, anticondensation heater, class F or H installation. It has been echanically strengthened for use on utility paralleling with unreliable grid. An excitation system offers enhanced motor starting and fault clearing short circuit capability.

HYDROGEN EMPHASIS TO SHIFT TO NORTHERN IRELAND FOLLOWING TESTING Clean Power Hydrogen, the UK-based green hydrogen technology and manufacturing group recently developed the IP-protected ‘Membrane-Free Electrolyser’ (MFE).

Following an extensive testing and commissioning process it reports it has run the entire MFE110 system, successfully producing separated hydrogen and oxygen gases at its expected capacity, and witnessed by a third party customer.

NEWS FIVE SITES IN THE UK SHOW POTENTIAL FOR GEOTHERMAL ENERGY EXTRACTION

eothermal energy provides a unique opportunity to deliver a low-carbon energy source to many areas of the UK, specifically for heating. A recent White Paper highlights opportunities where deep geothermal energy could help the UK meet its net zero objectives, increase energy supply security, deliver economic benefits and create the green jobs of the future to improve our communities.

BGS, in collaboration with Arup, was commissioned by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership to develop this White Paper entitled ‘The case for deep geothermal energy - unlocking investment at scale in the UK’.

It provides an evidence-based assessment of the opportunities and makes recommendations for building the deep geothermal sector in the UK. The report was funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub. Dr Corinna Abesser, BGS Director of Policy is the lead author of the report.

Geothermal energy is energy produced and stored as heat in the subsurface. It can provide an ultralow-carbon source for heating, cooling and power generation.

The current high costs of drilling restrict the use of geothermal energy to areas with certain geological settings. As technologies improve and new extraction methods are developed, more areas should become economically viable for geothermal exploitation.

Most of the UK’s onshore deep geothermal potential is found in deeply buried (deeper than 500m) limestones and sandstones in sedimentary basins.

Groundwater within these rocks may reach temperatures of more than 100°C but more data from deep wells and from operational geothermal projects is needed to estimate the economically usable portion of the energy. In some areas, hot granites provide a potential source for geothermal power.

There are currently two deep geothermal projects in development or operation in Cornwall for provision of heat and power, including the Eden Geothermal project, and three other UK sites are also using geothermal water from springs or shallower wells for heat.

Deep geothermal energy already delivers environmental, economic and technical advantages in countries with similar geology to the UK, such as the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Advantages include greenhouse gas emission reductions and job generation. They have also shown that deep geothermal sources are viable to provide long-term or large-scale district heating and cooling.

Matt Watson, Red Team Expert at CovertSwarm, a leading global ethical hacking, and cyber security solution provider, believes that the UK energy network is especially vulnerable.

With an ever-increasing reliance upon technology within the energy sector, he writes, the risk of cyber-attacks is also increasing.

With this in mind, the energy industry needs to ensure steps are taken to boost its security.

Today, a nation-state may target the energy grid of a rival country to cause a blackout, which could be used to weaken the adversary’s economy or its military capabilities.

Hacktivists may direct their attacks against the energy sector to publicly display their opposition to the industry’s activities for environmental or ideological reasons and cybercriminals may be attracted to the energy sector purely for financial gain.

Primary methods of attack may involve cyber attackers gaining initial access is phishing or spearphishing. They may use a variety of lures to induce their victims to click on a link or download a file, for example, emails may be crafted around topics such as healthcare, job postings, holiday entitlements, or password policies.

If a user then clicks on a malicious link or downloads a malicious file, malware could then be injected into their system.

Another variation on this theme would be a phishing email asking the victim to confirm their identity by entering personal data; threat actors could then use this data to directly access corporate resources within the security context of the victim or to perform a password reset of the victim’s corporate account.

It’s also worth mentioning that the infrastructure utilised by companies within the energy sector is often complex, and geographically diverse, presenting a large attack surface area that can be difficult to secure.

Their networks also often contain a mixture of both cyber and physical infrastructure such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, which were not designed with internet connectivity in mind. Bear the risks in mind and ,make sure that your employees are adequately trained in these following five areas: 1.Security awareness training 2.Strong access controls 3.Regular security assessments 4.Business continuity and incident response planning 5.Security monitoring and alerting.

CHP POWERS A SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING SITE Dynex, a world-leading designer and manufacturer of high-power semiconductors and assemblies, is now benefitting from an Edina-installed and maintained Combined Heat and Power (CHP) solution as part of its sustainability measures.

E

dina, a distributed energy solutions provider, was contracted to design, engineer, install, commission, and maintain the 1.56MW electrical output Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant at Dynex Semiconductors’ Lincoln manufacturing facility.

The move to accelerate on-site generation CHP was driven by the volatile energy market and the need to manage rising energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and improve energy-efficiency measures at the site by replacing old inefficient gas boilers.

Dynex is one of the world’s leading manufacturers in the design, development and production of High-Power Semiconductor modules and Power Assemblies used within industrial, traction, renewable and power grid, electric vehicles, fusion energy, and hydrogen electrolysis applications.

The CHP plant, powered by a single MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas genset, produces the site’s electrical requirement, thus offsetting grid imported power.

The heat from the electrical generation process is captured and utilised on-site to provide 75% of the hot water demand for temperature and humidity control within the manufacturing areas.

In doing so, CHP provision reduces the boiler house demand for hot water generation and energy costs on-site.

Improving Energy Efficiency Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is the cogeneration of electricity and heat from a single fuel source.

CHP forms part of Dynex’s sustainability and low-carbon measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon and water

footprint. The CHP plant offers highefficiency energy utilisation of 95%.

Because electricity and heat are produced and used onsite, Dynex will avoid transmission and distribution losses – typically around 7.5% that occur in transporting electricity from the grid.

Further sustainability measures include 200kW roof-mounted solar PV, which generates an average of 42,952kWh/ year, site-wide LED lighting rollout, and improvements in waste recycling.

These are just some of the measures enacted as part of Dynex’s commitment to the UK Government’s Climate Change Agreement (CCA) which sets energy reduction targets for the semiconductor industry.

As principal contractor, Edina designed and engineered the CHP engine within an acoustically treated weatherproof enclosure for ease of installation and ongoing asset-care access.

Edina delivered, installed, and commissioned the Dynex CHP plant on time and within budget and is maintaining the plant over a 15-year life cycle.

According to the latest 2022 plant availability performance data, the Dynex CHP is averaging a strong hourly availability at over 98% set against a 92.5% industry standard benchmark.

As the authorised official distributor for MWM gas gensets, Dynex are benefitting from Edina’s in-market support leveraging its local field services engineers, 24/7 remote plant monitoring and conditioning, and access to genuine MWM parts to ensure the CHP plant remains operational and downtimes are at a minimum.

Working with Dynex and their incumbent mechanical team, Edina were challenged with dovetailing the programme for civil works, CHP installation and commissioning, with Dynex’s own extensive programme to overhaul the full heating and power networks within the site.

From civil works design and installation to lifting operations and final operational testing, both Dynex and Edina worked in synergy to ensure minimum impact to ongoing operations.

he Generator Company (TGC) was contacted by the customer’s Production Manager towards the end of 2016 to enquire if TGC would like to work with them to design, deliver and install a new standby power package for a new state-of-the-art NHS cancer treatment facility, currently one of only two to be built in the UK;the other based in Manchester.

The advanced 31,500sqm, 11 storey building consists of five storeys below ground and six above. The height of the building, including below ground is 58.5 metres, making it equivalent to London’s Tower Bridge.

Below ground level is a 16,000sqm five-level building extending 28.5 metres below ground built with 44,000 cubic metres of concrete reinforced with approximately 8,000 tonnes of steel, which comprises two mechanical and electrical plant levels, two floors for patient therapy care and a short stay surgical service, in addition to eight

surgical theatres.

Aboveground is a 15,500sqm, 30 metre sixstorey hospital incorporating Europe’s largest centre for the treatment of blood disorders.

Some additional interesting build facts include: • Earth excavated: 80,000m3, which is the equivalent of 640 double decker buses, or enough to make 39,000,000 bricks, • 3000 people involved in the construction overall, • 1,100,000 iPhones could be charged with the power needed for the Centre.

TGC’s Project Sales Team attended numerous post tender meetings with the client’s Projects Team to discuss the project in greater detail determining any site restrictions, together with the specific requirements of the end-client thus ensuring that TGC was mindful of strict deadlines and stringent stipulations of the project based on the proposed use and location of the building.

This allowed TGC to provide them with a bespoke power solution for this groundbreaking project. The first stage of the project required temporary standby power to support the site during the construction of the building

In line with the initial requirements of the end-client, TGC proposed 2 off 1500kVA generators sized on the load profile information available at the time for the new cancer treatment equipment, boilers, UPS system and other essential plant.

The proposal was modified on request of the end-client due to changing of suppliers during the tender process, with the generator resized to 1 off 2500kVA with an oversized alternator to meet the revised load profile, thus reducing the footprint area of the generator.

GENSETS [continues from page 23] Value Engineering was applied in order to overcome challenging obstacles regarding available rooftop space for the Generator and Acoustic Enclosure, the eyeline height restriction and the actual load profile.

Maintaining the design noise target of 70dBA@1m with limited space on the rooftop location was the greatest challenge.

Corresponding to the noise target, the package included a self-contained acoustic enclosure to minimise noise levels for private patient rooms on level 5, an exhaust silencer and a 4,000-litre day tank which were to be housed on the roof of the building with the generator.

A 40,000 litre bulk fuel tank was to be located in a dedicated 2-hour fire rated room in the basement area and sized to provide 72 hours of emergency backup at full running load.

With the equipment being located on the roof of the building in a prominent area of central London, TGC’s team needed to take into consideration and respect planning rules in regards to height restrictions.

This meant that the acoustic enclosure was required to be below 2500mm in height and the exhaust silencer had to be hung on the side of the enclosure in order not to obscure the London skyline.

The transportation and lifting of the equipment, using a 500 tonne crane had to be carefully planned as the location of the site was surrounded by very narrow roads on top of a network of underground tunnels.

Following further discussions and sign off of all the equipment by the customer one of TGC’s experienced Project Managers was appointed to work closely alongside the customer to ensure that the project ran smoothly and all necessary site surveys, drawings, risks assessments, method statements and other associated aspects of the project were managed in an appropriate and timely manner.

This included co-ordination of an offsite witness test along with traffic management and road closures for the multi-staged delivery onto the roof and into the basement area.

As the generator and fuel oil system was to interface with many other systems within the hospital, TGC’s project manager met with the hospital’s fire officer, local authority and design team to ensure that the hospital would not be put at risk at any time during the project.

On acceptance of the equipment by all parties and prior to delivery, a Factory Acceptance Test of the open generator set took place at the manufactures site, attended and witnessed by the customer to determine that the equipment

met all requirements.

Following this successful test the equipment was transported to the premises of TGC’s acoustic container specialists for the manufacture of the acoustic container.

It was then broken down into four movable parts to allow for it to be safely transported to site

by Hiab lorry.

The 40,000-litre bulk fuel tank was delivered early on in the construction of the building and installed at basement level 2 followed by the generator and ancillary equipment at a later date.

On the programmed days, TGC’s logistics team transported the rest of the equipment on 5 lorry loads over 5 days, with 2 escorted vehicles owing to the fact that the loads were over 4-metres wide, to the site to meet the crane team who expertly offloaded and positioned the generator, acoustic container, attenuators and exhaust silencer onto the roof.

The installation of M&E works was completed over 4 months with numerous co-ordination and design meetings required to finalise the routes for the fuel system pipework and control cables for the master control panels between the generator located at roof level and bulk fuel tank and master control panels at basement level 2.

All final connections were carried out over a 2- day period by TGC’s skilled project engineers followed by commissioning prechecks of the generator and a loadbank test utilising our own 2500kVA resistive/reactive loadbank.

The Generator Company submitted the final operation and maintenance documents onto the Edocuments/BIM system as instructed by the customer, to include systems description, equipment and material schedules, health and safety documentation, test certificates, maintenance schedules and drawings.

A HAMPSHIRE DATA CENTRE’S POWER SOLUTION Keysource , a global data centre & critical environment specialist, was engaged by a leading Hampshire Data Centre to provide pre-construction services for the first floor data centre construction at its site. A large part of this service was to design and deliver a backup power solution to meet the additional power load of the new-build project once complete. WB Power Services Ltd was able to help by consulting on the project and delivering a bespoke solution.

aving been engaged to provide pre-construction services for the first floor data centre construction, Keysource, a global data centre & critical environment specialist, approached WBPS to scope, design, install and commission a new back-up power solution to meet the additional power load of the new-build project once complete.

The first stage of the project involved the cranage installation of 2 x 2200kVA Kohler prime rated generating sets, installed alongside two incumbent generators.

Due to spacing restrictions within the plant room, a bespoke framing solution was also designed.

The generators were connected into the existing fuel tank arrangement, and new control systems were modified to ensure compatibility with the existing sync systems.

Following project scope, design and sign-off, the first milestone was to deliver and place the two T2200kVA Kohler generators. Utilising a third party cranage company, the two generating sets were craned into an adjacent position and then skated in.

Due to severe space limitations, the silencers built for the generator couldn’t be hung from the ceiling in a traditional style.

As an alternative solution, a bespoke silencer support frame was constructed. The generators

were installed complete with plant room acoustic equipment, alongside two incumbent Caterpillar generators. They were then connected into the existing 10,000 litre fuel tank arrangement.

The newly-installed ComAp synchronising controllers were then modified to ensure compatibility with existing synchronising systems.

All new infrastructure was delivered and installed by the WBPS Logistics and Project teams within predefined time frames and budgets.

BIODIESEL BLENDS NOW POWERING GENSETS 24-7

Volvo Penta has been working with a company which develops reliable solutions designed to maintain a customer’s access to electricity at times of peak consumption or supply disruption. Binatural recently acquired three BRG Slim 625 kVA gensets powered by Volvo Penta’s TAD-1641GE engines, reports UKPN.

evelopments in Brazil could offer ‘knock-on’ benefits for the UK. Larger commercial scale biodiesel and bioethanol production capacity in the UK has certainly expanded since the first plant opened in 2005. The total UK biofuel production capacity is in excess of 1,500 million litres per year, of which 60% is bioethanol and 40% biodiesel (with a small volume of biomethane). However, actual production has been significantly below capacity to date.

Another approach to biodiesel blends Binatural’s biodiesel facility currently operates with three Volvo Penta-powered BRG gensets.

This local trial-adoption of biodiesel blends is aimed at optimizing costs and channeling excess energy back to the local community, while gathering knowledge of how the genset segment can bridge energy gaps sustainably.

As a long-time Volvo Penta customer, having served the Brazilian market for over 20 years, BRG Brasil Geradores has accumulated vast experience in developing reliable solutions that maintain a customer’s access to electricity at times of peak consumption or supply disruption.

ACTIVE MANAGEMENT WITH UPS TECH Energy costs remain high. Data centres need to consider efficient running strategies like never before.

The positive news is that most modern uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) already offer high levels of efficiency. For example: two modular UPS solutions, CumulusPower and StratusPower, have on-line efficiencies of over 97%. So, what else can facilities do to minimise the use of energy and reduce their carbon footprint at the same time? asks Louis McGarry, Sales & Marketing Director Centiel UK

W

hen it comes to UPS tech organisations should take a long-term view. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculations need to be made over ten, fifteen and ideally 30 years – the whole life cycle of the data centre - to make informed and active management choices about facility design and the right choice of UPS and associated equipment.

Right sizing is important because oversized UPS are inefficient. Modular UPS are flexible and can be installed with the ability to add modules using a “pay as you grow” approach.

Only the relatively inexpensive infrastructure around the UPS (e.g. cable size, modular UPS cabinet) needs to be ready for future growth, so the facility should be designed with flexibility for the future in mind. Then, rightsizing the UPS from day one by installing only the required number of UPS modules, minimises the overall capital expenditure (CAPEX), running costs and maintenance costs (OPEX).

Variable Load Management can help too. In a situation where the load can vary, UPS modules can be put into a “sleep mode”. While not switching power, their monitoring circuitry is fully operational, so they are instantaneously ready to switch power if needed.

Because it is the switching of power that causes the greatest energy losses, system efficiency is significantly increased.

Peak Shaving, also known as Peak Lopping Load Shaving or Peak Load Shaving is becoming more commonly used. This is a way that facilities can actively use their own energy storage to save costs during peak times of demand on the National Grid.

Peak Shaving can help customers avoid paying higher electricity prices or fees that are applied when going above their maximum peak load.

Peak shaving can be achieved by either reducing usage levels by switching off nonessential equipment or by utilizing other energy sources such as battery storage or UPS Systems. With UPS, Peak Shaving is achieved with reduced energy taken from the grid while batteries simultaneously discharge during high rate demand.

One real life example is a distillery in Scotland which plans to work off-grid completely. A CHP generator, running off gas, will provide power.

However, in times of peak demand the factory can peak shave using the energy stored in its UPS batteries rather than purchasing electricity

With energy demand continuing to rise, grid operators are keen on finding ways to achieve a “shaved curve”; and so, end users will usually be granted a rebate on their energy bills if they implement a Peak Shaving program.

For Peak Shaving to work successfully, the necessary technology must be included in the UPS so product selection from the outset needs to be considered carefully. The type of UPS battery used is also critical.

Li-ion batteries, unlike traditional VRLA batteries, are capable of thousands of cycles but they have legitimate safety concerns. They release oxygen, which is combustible and if they do catch fire, the fire is not easily put out.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, however, are oxygen free and are as safe as VRLA batteries. They share the advantages of cycling but with significantly less risk.

They also tolerate higher ambient temperatures, reducing or removing the need for cooling, and their typical useful working life of fifteen to twenty years means they only need to be replaced once in a 30-year design life UPS’s lifetime.

Using LiFePO4 batteries, it is possible to reduce costs by taking some energy from the batteries instead of the National Grid during peak times in the day, for example, and recharging batteries at times of lower demand when electricity costs are less, such as at night.

It would not make sense to discharge batteries completely or quickly, so to preserve battery life, small amounts of battery energy are taken simultaneously with grid sharing to shave pence off the bill which over time adds up to significant savings.

51-TONNE GENERATOR LIFTED USING CUBE JACKS

As part of a UK power generation infrastructure project, Denby Transport’s Special Projects division completed the installation of a 51-ton generator using Enerpac SCJ-50 cube jacks. UKPN has the story.

Yealrier this year a 5m-long generator was transported to a generator building on a flatbed trailer.

This was a KEY part of a UK power generation infrastructure project handled by Denby Transport’s Special Projects division. This same divison later completed the installation of a 51-ton generator using Enerpac SCJ-50 cube jacks.

Arriving at the generator building and resting on header beams, the generator was raised off the trailer using four SCJ-50 cube jacks and lowered onto static load holders.

The cube jacks were then repositioned on 0.5m-high static load holders to complete the lift to 2.35m, allowing the generator to be skidded into its final resting position.

Denby Transport director of special projects, George Elliott, said that due to their small

footprint, the company’s new SCJ-50 cube jacks are ideal for confined spaces.

“They’re also easy to use, to provide a stable lift and to allow two-man lifts where previously we’d have needed three or four people using conventional jacks, which would have taken a lot longer.”

An Enerpac SCJ-50 Cube Jack can lift 50 tons up to a height of 2m. It uses a base lifting frame and self-aligning, lightweight steel cribbing blocks to provide high-capacity and stabilised lifting.

Here’s how it work. The incremental system mechanically locks the load as each cribbing block is manually added or removed, instead of being held by hydraulic pressure.

Once the mechanical lock engages, the lift cylinder retracts, and another cribbing block can be added or removed.

Denby Transport said that replacing traditional wooden cribbing with the cube jacks allowed a quicker and safer generator installation.

As a company, Enerpac says it is more than familiar with providing equipment for the challenges of industry.

A key role for Enerpac Enerpac hydraulic cylinders are set to have a key role in the final construction of the ITER fusion tokamak reactor in 2024.

On completion of assembly of the tokamak’s vacuum vessel sectors, nine cylinders now pre-installed at the bottom of the machine will lift a 11m diameter, 320t, circular poloidal magnet (PF6) into position at the base of the tokamak.

The ITER tokamak hosts the fusion reaction in which plasma particles collide and release energy at temperatures up to 150M° C. To prevent the plasma touching any of the tokamak walls and disrupting the reaction, magnetic confinement is used with a combination of large circular toroidal and poloidal magnets.

Six ring-shaped poloidal field coils are positioned around the vessel to shape the plasma and contribute to its stability by “pinching” it away from the walls.

A PF6 magnet is situated at the bottom of vessel on temporary supports while the ITER tokamak is constructed above it, after which it will be completely enclosed and unreachable by crane.

The poloidal magnet ring will be raised in stages while resting on nine temporary supports each equipped with an Enerpac 100 ton capacity, customised HCL1008 hydraulic cylinder connected to the EVO synchronised lifting system.

Nine hydraulic cylinders are connected to a standard EVO Synchronous Lifting Pump operated using a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), enabling each of the nine lifting points to be monitored and controlled by a single operator.

he revolutionary £5 million Predict4Resilience project will use AI technology to predict where faults could occur up-to seven days in advance, allowing the electricity network operator to mobilise engineers and equipment to shorten the time power supplies could be disrupted.

By using AI, historic weather and fault data along with network asset and landscape information are used to develop machine learning models.

Combined with real-time weather forecasting, Predict4Resilience will inform SP Energy Networks’ control room about where the weather will hit and what damage it’s expected with much more accurately than ever before.

This will enable the control room to mobilise teams and send them out ahead of time, ready to restore power should a fault occur.

The innovative technology adds to SP Energy Networks’ storm response and will ultimately allow the network provider to respond more quickly to power cuts and more efficiently target resources ahead of storms.

These include The University of Glasgow which is developing the AI methods which underpin this new forecasting capability; Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Distribution, which will use the findings to test a different regulatory area, resulting in a wider scale area being tested, and Sia Partners, a global consultancy who bring the technical capabilities to build the software and its supporting infrastructure, as well as its business expertise to ensure this technology can be rolled-out across all network operators.

The project secured £4.5million funding from the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) from energy regulator Ofgem and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), which supports ambitious and innovative projects to accelerate the transition to net zero emissions.

SUPPORTING THE FIRST LOWCARBON HEATING & COOLING NETWORK A new innovative low carbon energy network, developed by SmartParc supported by Veolia, is set to cut carbon emissions for food manufacturing by 30,000 tonnes per year at the flagship SmartParc site near Derby. It is home to the UK’s first ever low-carbon food manufacturing community, covering 186,000 m2 (2 million square feet).

M

ost food manufacturers have a requirement for both heating and cooling to support their storage, processing, space heating, and hygiene activities.

SmartParc’s energy sharing infrastructure aims to utilise wind and solar initially, combined with central services, to deliver sustainable food production.

To support both these aims the new scheme incorporates industrial ammonia chillers and heat pumps, and the resultant energy will be supplied through a 9.8km district cooling infrastructure.

This is designed to deliver a diversified cold glycol cooling duty of 11MW at -6°C and, by capturing the waste heat from the refrigeration plant, will provide hot water capability of up to 10MW at 72°C across the park.

The cooling system is anticipated to provide an annual CO2e saving of around 27,000 tonnes between 2024 and 2030.

By capturing process heat, the heating network will deliver a further CO2e saving of 3,500 tonnes per year, with potential to double this, when compared to gas boilers.

use of ammonia refrigerant in the network, which has a zero global warming potential compared to equivalent synthetic hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant systems.

Veolia designed the pipe network, and will operate the entire heating, cooling and high voltage distribution across the 155-acre site on behalf of SmartParc, including managing metering and billing, and provide 24/7 year-round engineering support.

WORLD-FIRST ELECTRIC TOURING CAR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP Atlas Copco will power the world’s first national fully electric touring car championship. Until now, touring car racing has taken place with petrol-engine cars. But in 2024, that’s about to change, as the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC) will become the first national racing series in the world to compete with electric touring cars. Key to enabling this transformation are Atlas Copco ZBC battery-based energy storage systems, which will be used to recharge the electric cars.

candinavia is well known for its efforts to combat climate change and countries in the region have set strict regulations to reduce emissions, particularly in city centres. STCC’s move to use fully electric cars will enable the racing to become more sustainable as well as allow the competition to take part in cities, which is an exciting prospect for the sport and its spectators.

“There is a huge energy transition going on globally and a shift towards using electric power rather than fossil fuels, and the motorsport industry is no different,” says Micke Bern, CEO at STCC. “However, racing electric touring cars is very different to driving electric consumer cars.

A major challenge we faced in electrifying STCC was that there was no concept. We needed new cars and new ways to power them, and to find trusted partners that could help us to achieve our dreams.”

Atlas Copco has a long history in efficient and reliable power supply and is renowned globally for its expertise in advanced energy solutions.

STCC was aware of the company’s innovative energy storage systems and turned to Atlas Copco for support. The ambitious project consisted of developing mobile energy units to recharge the new racing cars, eliminating fuel consumption in the process and reducing the environmental impact.

Going electric A vital part of racing electric cars is being able to supply them with energy and recharge the batteries quickly and efficiently while meeting emission regulations.

“We wanted the transition to be as sustainable as possible, and to use battery-based units rather than diesel generators,” explains Micke. “The chosen energy system needed to be able to manage energy coming from different sources, like renewables, and deliver it as required to ensure the touring cars had enough power for the races.”

in terms of capacity and mobility,” comments Torbjörn Håkansson, Owner and CEO of SMT Sweden, Atlas Copco’s distributor in the region.

Touring car racing uses a high level of energy, so the power banks needed to be able to handle a lot of energy coming into the system for storage as well as energy going out to the charger for the cars.

“Capacity was vital for us,” comments Micke. “The cars have 45 kWh and 800V batteries, and each session uses about 360 kWh. There are typically two sessions per day and four sessions in a regular race weekend. For city events, with head-to-head racing, the format is slightly different, and less energy is used.

However, in metropolitan areas, it is particularly crucial to avoid greenhouse gas emissions during the events.”

The storage systems also needed to be able to be easily moved between each of the races and be ready to start on arrival.

“We worked closely with STCC to fully understand their requirements, and recommended the ZBC 250-575 model, which has a rated power of 250kVA, storage capacity of 575kWh, and they are easy to use and install. We designed a mobile energy station, putting two units on a trailer and matching the specifics of the racing cars’ recharging process,” Fredrik Alund, Business Line Manager at Atlas Copco.

The ZBC energy storage systems deliver high performance for applications that require a significant flow of electrical energy.

These units incorporate innovative high-density lithium-ion batteries. They can provide over 12 hours of power from a single charge and can be fully charged in just three hours, depending on the application.

Additionally, the inclusion of advanced battery technology means they are more compact and lightweight compared with traditional alternatives, and are therefore highly mobile. They can be easily transported between races.

Furthermore, when working in island mode, these energy storage systems offer emission-free operations (critical for city centre applications), providing resilient and sustainable energy on demand and significant savings.

During 2023, there have been various demonstration shows where STCC has presented the new electric cars and proven the technology. Guest Speaker: Andy Green ‘Fastest Man on Earth’ Green is the current holder of the world land speed record, and the first person to break the sound barrier on land. On 25 September 1997 in ThrustSSC he beat the previous record in Black Rock Desert, US, reaching a speed of 714.144 miles per hour (1,149.303 km/h). On 15 October 1997, 50 years and 1 day after the sound barrier was broken in aerial flight by Chuck Yeager, Green reached 763.035 miles per hour (1,227.986 km/h), the first supersonic record (Mach 1.016). His call sign was “Dead Dog”. As the vehicle crossed the speed of sound it created a sonic boom.

He is now working on a new record attempt to break the 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/h) mark with Bloodhound LSR. His next land speed attempt was intended to be for MG in a specially modified MG F called the MG EX255; however, due to the time required for modifications, the project did not finish on time and that attempt never happened.

Andy Green’s most recent challenge Andy Green’s most recent challenge was the driving of the JCB Dieselmax car, attempting to take the Diesel Land Speed Record over 300 mph (480 km/h). Having tested the vehicle on his own RAF base, Wittering, on 22 August 2006, he broke the previous record of 236 miles per hour (380 km/h) (set in August 1973), after attaining an average speed of 328.767 miles per hour (529.099 km/h) during two runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. Twenty four hours later, Green broke his own record, achieving a speed of 350.092 miles per hour (563.418 km/h) on 23 August 2006.

He qualified as a fighter pilot on F-4 Phantom and Tornado F3 aircraft. In 2003 Green was promoted to Wing Commander. He later became Officer Commanding Operations Wing at RAF Wittering near Peterborough. Green was the captain of the RAF team at the Cresta Run, where he used an experimental French toboggan. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1998 New Year Honours and was awarded the Segrave Trophy by the Royal Automobile Club in 1997.

In 2006 he was awarded the John Cobb Trophy by the British Racing Drivers’ Club for “a success of outstanding character” and an Honorary degree from Staffordshire University in July 2008.

FLEXIBLE ENERGY DEMAND IS CRITICAL, BOTH FOR THIS WINTER AND FOR NET ZERO Managing energy demand flexibly is absolutely critical, both for this winter and for net zero, says the Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE).

Ofgem has approved the return of the Demand Flexibility Service (DFS), an essential tool that helped ensure security of supply last winter and saw over 1.6 million homes and businesses rewarded for adjusting their non-essential energy demand.

The DFS is expected to launch in late October/early November and works by paying members for turning down their electricity use during times of peak demand on the electricity system.

It was first launched last winter in response to fears over gas shortages and has been reintroduced to help National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) manage the energy system in a safe and secure fashion.

There will be several test events so that customers can be sure they will have a chance to participate and earn rewards of up to £3 per kilowatt hour, depending on provider offerings.

Sarah Honan, Flexibility Policy Manager at the ADE, said: “Demand flexibility is not merely an additional support for our energy system in times of stress, it is the only way we can reach net zero in a timely and cost-effective manner.

The DFS is a major step towards that future, where wind and solar generation are not turned off in favour of carbon-intensive gas power, but instead, demand from households and businesses is used flexibly to meet the peaks and troughs of renewable generation.

The Centre for Net Zero found that 81% of surveyed Octopus Energy customers who participated last year would be interested in increasing their demand, or ‘turning up’ electricity use to avoid renewable curtailment.

“The ADE has been closely involved in the development of the DFS since its inception and we hope this year can build on the success of last winter, when participants delivered enough energy to power 10 million+ homes across the UK. We especially hope to see increased participation from UK companies.

Furthermore, recent announcements regarding net zero have introduced uncertainty, leaving us eagerly awaiting further details to inform an approach moving forward.”

The Trade Bill, Automated Vehicles Bill, and the Rail Reform Bill also represent opportunities for ACE members to actively engage in.

NEW MEASURING AND PROTECTION DEVICES FOR EV CHARGING TVR Instruments, a specialist technical distributor of low voltage instrumentation and power management products, are introducing a range of measuring and protection devices for use in domestic and industrial EV charging installations at the forthcoming London EV Show on 28th to 30th November at the London ExCel exhibition centre.

FRER Srl, has enhanced its range of earth leakage relays with continued expansion of Type B Earth Leakage Relays for use in installations and sites equipped for electric vehicle charging. A range of three products are suitable for domestic and industrial charge points, roadside EV charging stations or at larger public installations.

The domestic charge point market is serviced with the XTDB019 - a residual direct current monitoring module. The XTDB019 is electrically coupled to a protection unit or switching unit and performs the function of the residual direct current monitoring device, in full compliance with the requirements of IEC 62955.

As an option, the module can also integrate residual alternate current monitoring, in compliance with the threshold and timing requirements for residual direct current - protection devices (RDC-PD). The module is suitable for use in AC charging stations permanently connected to the mains. The XTDB019 module features a 19mm wide cable passage and is available with optional UART communication. www.tvri.co.uk

ECO-FRIENDLY 4-STROKE ENGINE FUELLED BY AMMONIA NOW AVAILABLE A four-stroke engine-based using ammonia fuel was recently released by Wärtsilä - this is now commercially available. The project is said to be the first commercially available four-stroke enginebased solution for ammonia fuel.

This ammonia-fuelled product is part of the Wärtsilä 25 engine platform. The Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia solution can immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 70% compared to a similar-sized diesel solution, the company noted, meeting current EU targets until 2050 and even exceeding the IMO target for 2040, says the company.

Because ammonia is still a relatively new fuel, especially on four-stroke engines, the full solution includes an AmmoniaPac, a fuel gas supply system for storing and managing ammonia fuel. The Wärtsilä Ammonia Release Mitigation System (WARMS); and the Wärtsilä NOx Reducer (NOR) for optimal exhaust aftertreatment are provided with the engine.

The ammonia-fuelled engine uses the same base engine as the Wärtsilä 25, with only a limited number of differing components. This means existing engines will be convertible to ammonia use with minor modifications.

MAJOR TUNNEL PROJECT GETS NEW GENSETS

CGM, the genset manufacturer, has supplied 7.3-MVA of continuous power to one of Europe’s largest construction projects, the Fehmarn Belt tunnel.

This is an immersed tunnel, which will connect the Danish island of Lolland with the German island of Fehmarn, crossing the 18-kilometre-wide (11 mi) Fehmarn Belt in the Baltic Sea. It will utlimately provide a direct link between northern Germany and Lolland, and from there to the Danish island of Zealand and Copenhagen, becoming the world’s longest road and rail tunnel.

The tunnel will be a major connection between central Europe and Scandinavia.. Twenty gensets has been provided for the spreader pontoons used to precisely distribute sediment for land reclamation, and for the protection layer pontoon, which is used to install sheet metal on the seabed.

The new gensets powering the construction operations are based on 100-kVA FPT Industrial engines certified for EU Stage 5 emissions regulations.

The sets feature Mecc Alte alternators with special coatings and there are 12 Inteligen1000 controllers and also Intelivision 5.2 controllers provided by ComAp. InteliGen 1000 is regarded as the most advanced ComAp genset controller for multiple gensets with paralleling operations, with or without connection to the mains or other source. Intended primarily for switchgear applications, this high-end controller helps users control and monitor demanding projects with critical infrastructures such as datacentres, hospitals, banks and construction sites.

The manufacturer calls InteliVision 5.2 an ‘easy-to-use remote colour display for ComAp controllers, for monitoring and control of single gen-set for various applications’. This intuitive plug & play solution provides comprehensive visual overview of all engine data, monitoring information and trend history.

ABB has supplied steel electrical cabinets and 18-in. touch control panels. Built into four 40-ft. High Cube containers, the units deliver a total of 2 MVA (1.6 MW).

CGM reports that it is also supplying eight gensets housed in two 20-ft. DNV-certified containers for the two immersion layer pontoons used to position the tunnel sections underwater.

The eight gen-sets deliver 660 kVA each, in parallel - a total of 2,640-kVA prime power per submerged pontoon and 5.3 MVA in total (4.2 MW).

These units are powered with Volvo engines certified for IMO Tier 3, using STAMFORD alternators with special coatings and type IG1000 controllers by ComAp. In total, CGM gensets will supply 7.3-MVA (5.8 MW) continuous power for this major construction project. www.cgmitalia.it
