AJ Power, Chairman and Managing Director, Ashley Pigott, was honoured with an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the King’s 2024 New Year Honours List for his outstanding contributions to UK Export and Manufacturing.

Ashley has devoted over five decades to the development, innovation and growth of UK industry, with a special focus on the diesel generators market.

Founded in 2003, AJ Power is a global power solutions company which designs, manufacturers and tests diesel generating sets and associated equipment at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom.

NEWS £11.5M TO BE INVESTED IN EAST SUSSEX POWER GRID SAYS UKPN

K Power Networks is investing £11.5 million in the electricity grid near Heathfield, in East Sussex, to future-proof the power network for thousands of residents.

The company, which delivers electricity supplies to 8.5 million households and businesses across the South East, London and East of England, is constructing a new grid substation next to the existing substation in Broad Oak while protecting native dormice.

As part of the project, two new 60-megawatt, 60-tonne transformers have been delivered to the site.

Once energised, these will receive power at 132,000-volts and step it down to 33,000-volts to distribute to substations and eventually local homes and businesses. The investment will more than double the capacity of the site to 78-megawatts, to maintain reliable electricity supplies into the future, including as more low carbon technologies connect to the electricity network.

A new 33,000-volt switchboard is also under construction, with new circuit breakers to enable control, protection and disconnection of the equipment, keeping power supplies safe and resilient. The new switchboard in Broad Oak will use environmentally-friendly technology as part of the company’s commitment to reducing use of the greenhouse gas sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).

Before work started at the substation, which serves 22,800 properties, ecology surveys were carried out to check for all protected species, which identified that dormice were present. This led to creation of an enriched dormice habitat on surrounding land, which included planting native trees, shrubs and installing nest boxes for dormice.

Stephen Mortimer, project manager at UK Power Networks, said: “The new electricity equipment at Broad Oak will increase the resilience of electricity supplies, and deliver long-term network reliability and capacity benefits for thousands of homes and businesses across a wide area.

“We’ve taken care at this site to carry out environmental surveys and follow our expert’s recommendations to ensure we protect the dormice habitat in this area, while investing to increase the resilience of power supplies for homes and businesses across our networks.”

Emma Mundy, from environmental consultancy ADAS, said: “The works have been undertaken under a Natural England licence for hazel dormice, with supervision provided at all key stages of the works and UK Power Networks worked closely with us to support this process. Nest boxes and planting have been undertaken to enhance the woodland for dormice, with monitoring surveys also being carried out to check on the local population of dormice.”

Work to install and connect the new electrical equipment will continue throughout this year. UK Power Networks is investing £600 million this year to maintain safe and reliable power supplies for homes and businesses across the South East, London and East of England. The company’s network of cables, substations and power lines distribute power supplies to a population of about 20 million people.

NEWS £51.49M LOSTOCK MANCHESTER WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANT

lack & Veatch was selected as the engineering, procurement and construction management contractor to oversee the delivery of a Manchester plant, which is now expected to be operational by 2025.

The Lostock waste-to-energy plant is being built on the site of a decommissioned coal-fired power plant and is scheduled to begin commercial operation in late 2025.

Babcock & Wilcox is currently working on a contract signed with Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant to support delivery of a power train for a waste-to-energy plant near Manchester in the UK. The contract, valued at approximately £51.49 million, will see the B&W Environmental and B&W Renewable arms of B&W provide engineering services and advanced technologies for the plant, including flue gas treatment technologies, air-cooled condensers and boiler cleaning equipment.

The Lostock plant will use residual waste to generate 60MW+ of energy for residents and businesses. Additionally, the waste-to-energy plant will process around 600,000 tonnes of waste annually.

B&W Chief Operating Officer Jimmy Morgan said : “Waste-to-energy is a powerful solution for eliminating emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane from landfills, using waste that would otherwise decompose and create methane to produce clean, renewable power.”.

The Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant (LSEP) is an Energy from Waste facility which is currently under construction at the Lostock Works site near Northwich in Cheshire.

The facility will export 69.9MW of electricity to the grid using residual waste, the waste material remaining once materials that can be recycled have been removed, as a fuel. LSEP Ltd is a joint venture between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and FCC Environment.

Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant Ltd is also currently working with Black & Veatch on an Energy from Waste facility at the Lostock Works site near Northwich where another power train is on order.

This will form the heart of the energy generation and environmental performance of the plant. With the required site enabling works to build the LSEP facility now complete, Black & Veatch will oversee the delivery of the £480m plant, which is expected to be operational by 2025 when it will generate enough sustainable energy to power around 125,000 homes.

A spokesperson from LSEP Ltd said:“This is a really positive step forward for the LSEP facility, which will support in levelling up the local economy by creating up to 600 jobs during the construction period and around 50 high quality full-time operational jobs with training opportunities to support career progression.

“Appointing Black and Veatch and Babcock and Wilcox Renewable as the lead contracting partners is a key milestone on our journey to manage the delivery of the LSEP plant, and provides the certainty that will help us to unlock the significant investment, job creation and energy security benefits of the project.”

CHP PLANT PROVIDES HEAT AND STEAM FOR THE MACALLAN DISTILLERY A Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant near Craigellachie, Moray currently provides heat in the form of steam for the nearby Macallan whisky distillery and electricity to the national grid.

Generating up to 15MWe of electricity the plant produces enough renewable energy to power 20,000 homes and when the 10MWth of heat supplied to the distillery, and the natural gas this displaces is taken into account, it represents a carbon saving equivalent to 42,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum equivalent to taking 18,000 cars off the road.

The plant is fuelled with sustainable low-grade wood harvested from regional forestry operations.

This has a number of local benefits including providing an additional market for low-grade wood, helping local forestry growers by supporting the production of higher-grade wood which in turn makes local forestry and woodland management more economic as well as supporting jobs in the supply chain.

The life of the plant is 25–40 years.

Construction was managed by StandardKessel Gmbh on contract to Speyside Renewable Energy Partnership Ltd. and the plant is operated and maintained by BWSC. Funding was provided by Speyside Renewable Energy Partnership’s shareholders as well £48m in bonds guaranteed by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority, part of HM Treasury.

Local scale biomass plants like this one are good sources of low carbon energy with benefits extending well beyond the local sphere.

They can help tackle climate change by reducing CO2 emissions.

By using locally sourced and sustainable wood fuel they reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels and create a more secure energy supply.

£92 BILLION BOOST FOR UK ECONOMY THROUGH WIND Developing the UK’s supply chain for offshore wind represents a £92 billion opportunity to boost the UK’s economy by 2040, says a report by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) and the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP).

The report, entitled ‘Supply Chain Capability Analysis’ outlines key measures that industry and government can take to strengthen the UK’s offshore wind supply chain, and in doing so maximise the socioeconomic benefits that offshore wind growth can bring to the UK. The UK has the second largest installed offshore wind capacity in the world, with a government target to more than treble this capacity by 2030 to 50 GW, including 5GW floating offshore wind.

This expansion represents a significant increase in demand for

equipment and services required to develop, construct, and operate offshore wind farms. Meanwhile, the expansion of offshore wind in other countries provides an opportunity for the UK to export its equipment, services, and expertise abroad.

The analysis indicates that targeted intervention in the UK supply chain has the potential to bring £92 billion worth of ‘gross value added’ into the economy. But the report confirms that more could be done to keep the UK’s supply chain resilient – with UK suppliers competing with those of other nations for vital contracts.

NEWS SHELL JOINS THE RENEWABLES FOR SUBSEA POWER PROJECT

E

nergy company Shell has joined the Renewables for Subsea Power (RSP) collaborative project which is currently powering subsea equipment off the coast of Orkney through a combination of wave power and subsea energy storage.

The $2.5 million demonstrator initiative, which is currently nearing 12 months in the water, has connected the Blue X wave energy converter—built by Edinburgh company Mocean Energy—with a Halo underwater battery storage system developed by Aberdeen intelligent energy management specialists Verlume.

The fully operational project, located 5 km east of Orkney Mainland, aims to show how green technologies can be combined to provide reliable low carbon power and communications to subsea equipment, offering a cost-effective alternative to umbilical cables, which are carbon intensive with long lead times to procure and install.

The new investment has come via the Shell Technology - Marine Renewable Program - a global R&D group pursuing the mission of finding, screening, testing, and developing marine renewable energy technologies to achieve more value with lower emissions and help build the critical energy infrastructure for the Blue Economy to grow and thrive.

They will now join project leads Mocean Energy and Verlume, alongside industry players Baker Hughes, Serica Energy, Harbour Energy, Transmark Subsea, PTTEP, TotalEnergies and the Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC).

Joining RSP offers Shell access to all data and results from the current test program, alongside a feasibility assessment of the use of RSP technology at a location of their choice.

“This new investment by Shell underscores the international interest in our pan-industry project and we look forward to working with them and exploring potential new applications for RSP’s combined technologies,” said Ian Crossland, Commercial Director at Mocean Energy.

DOGGER BANK CONNECTION ACHIEVED National Grid has connected Dogger Bank, the world’s largest offshore wind farm to its electricity transmission network following the extension of its Creyke Beck 400 kV substation in Yorkshire, UK. While not yet fully operational, Dogger Bank has has produced its first electricity, marking a major milestone in the development of the UK’s offshore wind industry and the transition to a cleaner, more secure energy system.

The wind farm is being constructed in the North Sea in three 1.2 GW phases known as Dogger Bank A, B and C, and is due for completion in 2026. Phase A has been connected to Creyke Beck, phase B is to be connected at the same substation, and phase C is planned to plug into National Grid’s Lackenby substation.

The Dogger Bank connection to the mainland was made using Hitachi Energy’s high-voltage direct current system, the first time it has been used within the UK grid.

Hitachi provided its HVDC Light system to connect the first phase of the wind farm, which is located 130 km off the northeast coast of England, to the grid, and despite disruption caused by Covid-19, the 1200 MW offshore platform project was successfully executed in a record time of 38 months, and with the highest safety and quality standards.

MTU SERIES 1600 NOW UPRATED BY 49% SAYS MANUFACTURER

The new generation of the Rolls-Royce 12-cylinder mtu Series 1600 Gx1 diesel engine is said by R-R to ‘set the standard in terms of performance, flexibility, life-cycle costs and lower carbon performance’.

“With this new generation of diesel engines in the power range up to nearly 1000 kW, we are continuing to invest in our mtu engine portfolio and offer our customers worldwide cutting-edge technology for reliable and sustainable stationary power generation in critical applications,” stated Dr Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce’s business unit Power Systems.

Rolls-Royce recently presented its new strategic framework. A key component is the focus on marketleading propulsion and energy solutions with higher performance that are largely developed and produced in-house.

The range is intended primarily for power generation in critical applications such as data centres, airports and hospitals, and as power plants in regions without a connection to the public grid, such as remote construction sites or mines. In combination with renewable energies and battery storage, its low-load capability is

said to make it a reliable and robust power generator in self-sufficient microgrids.

Rolls-Royce has increased engine performance by up to 49 % compared to the previous model.

As a result, the 12V1600 Gx1 is believed to offer the highest power density in its power class and outstanding load acceptance, as well as the customary robustness and reliability.

To achieve this, engine displacement been increased, a new turbocharger system has been employed, and the injection system has been renewed. The engines deliver full power even at high ambient temperatures, high humidity and under the most difficult environmental conditions.

All Series 1600 mtu engines are released for the use of synthetic diesel fuels in accordance with the EN15940 standard including renewable diesel fuel or HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil).

SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL FOR GEOTHERMAL IN SOUTHWEST Getech has completed a key geothermal study for Angus Energy, which demonstrates significant potential in a UK development of the geothermal energy sources.

Angus Energy is committed to leveraging its oil and gas drilling and engineering expertise to develop geothermal energy projects. To achieve this, the company enlisted Getech’s subsurface expertise to locate and assess promising areas for geothermal energy production in southwest England.

wo bespoke designed & built acoustic enclosures, each housing a 3000 kVA QSK78 diesel generator, switchgear, fuel pumps & other auxiliary equipment were provided for a data centre site alongside 20,000 litre Underbelly Fuel Tanks . The genset currently provide missioncritical backup power for a key UK data centre.

3 X 1,250 KVA GENSETS FOR A DATA CENTER PROJECT

Regency Power took just a short period of time to manufacture 3 x 1250kva gensets for a data centre backup power package. It successfully completed the stringent client Witness testing procedures prior to the delivery of the three 1,250 kVA diesel generators.

Regency Power Generation is a UK business assembling, customising, installing, servicing and supporting its standard and custom range of diesel generators.

The company recently fitted Pandaros controls. to two existing 1500KVA generators were already in place at a site belonging to John Lewis MP1 of Milton Keynes. Regency was appointed as the principal contractor onsite and designed and developed a new generator set control system (COMAP).

A company spokesman comments: “We designed the new mains/ generator G99 Synchronising panel (COMAP) onto 2 separate LV switch panels complete with new dual hot/ standby Siemens PLC load controls.”

2 X 2.5MW DIESEL GENSET FOR A NEW DATA CENTRE IN GLASGOW

In 2023 Dieselec Thistle Generators was appointed to provide an emergency power solution at Datavita’s new data centre in Glasgow.

The company supplied the data centre at 177 Bothwell Street, citycentre with two 2.5MVA generators complete with a control system designed to cover switching between both dual mains supplies and the backup synchronising generators.

The generators had to be located high in the city centre skyline on the building rooftop in bespoke acoustic enclosures. Each generator runs off its own day tank with an auto fuel fill system in place from ground floor bulk storage tanks.

Joe Skillin, Major Projects Manager at DTGen said: “Whilst we’ve delivered many power solutions for data centres throughout the UK, we were delighted to be working with Datavita again, right here in

Glasgow, following our successful delivery of the solution for Fortis data centre. We carried out out the installation in a live building, which had a number of challenges, but the generators were craned into position during a weekend.” , and now it’s hands on deck working t The new data centre is a highly resilient, purpose-built facility, and of tier III design, with 130 racks worth of space.

With excellent fibre connectivity and highly efficient cooling using green energy, the data centre offers an exceptional level of physical security as well as flexibility for customers.

Graeme Logie, Operations Director at Datavita, said: “We knew that DTGen had the experience and technical capabilities to safely and competently manage the city centre installation of the emergency power solution at our new data centre.”

N+2 CRITICAL POWER SYSTEM FAILURE CAUSED PROBLEMS When a global cloud and streaming provider suffered a catastrophic failure of its N+2 Critical Power System during testing with its chosen maintenance provider the company was left with a machine suffering main stator failure.

The service provider was unwilling to help and quotes to completely remove the power system from site for repair looked too high.

The problem with the location of this generator meant it required a 400+ Ton crane for removal and installation, therefore, causing a massive issue uneconomical repair disaster.

Pleavin Power was recommended to the client and was contacted to survey, assess and offer a cost

effective repair solution. With the site supported with onsite backup generation, the Pleavin Power inhouse team offered the client the option to dismantle, remove the fuel tank and remove the unit on site with the use of an additional piece of equipment - the telehandler.

The telehandler allowed safe removal and re-installation of the main alternator removing the need for crane hire and total removal of the generator from site.

The generator was taken away, re-wound and overhauled to within OEM specification before being reinstalled, commissioned and handed over to the client within two weeks. The full turnkey solution and most cost effective solution was delivered, reports Pleavin Power.

NEWS OVERCOMING POWER CONSTRAINTS AND DRIVING ENERGY EFFICIENCIES IN DATA CENTRES

T

he need for data centres has accelerated rapidly in line with new demands, but providing power for them isn’t always easy. Despite the rollout of the UK government’s support package, there are still challenges for data centre operators looking to make changes to cut costs and improve energy efficiency, explains Steve Wright, Chief Operating Officer at 4D Data Centres, part of Redcentric plc Data centres need electricity to run their infrastructure and keep their environment at optimally cooled temperatures. In 2010, data centres used 1% of the world’s energy and sites are still using around this amount with minimal increase today. The expectations for data centres are increasing and with growing pressure on the power grid, it’s getting harder to deliver efficiencies.

The high rise of data capacity is becoming a global issue due to a hunger for instant-data processing as data centres are kept running 24/7. The world’s population is becoming more IT literate, which has led to households consuming huge amounts of data. Online streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify require the support of a data centre, so the demand for additional facilities to combat this growth is unsurprising.

To keep up with market trends, there’s an increased demand in finding new sites to build and operate data centres, but also to make better use of space for existing facilities. They are important to the digitalisation of society and establishment of a smart energy system, yet have implications for energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. Research shown to the National Grid reveals that the UK has the largest data centre capacity in Europe, with London being the continent’s data centre hub. This is largely due to the size of the city’s financial centre and its size and reach of its fibre capacity. But more recently, London has started to see data centre developments running into physical limitations.

EU countries such as Ireland and the Netherlands have now begun to review their energy consumption in response to an increase in power shortages and grid constraints. One example is the EirGrid group, which manages and operates the transmission grid of electricity across Ireland. It has halted a proposed plan for 30 new data centres last year, after restrictions to build such facilities were put in place until 2028.

Amazon and Microsoft have reportedly scrapped their own plans to build data centres in Ireland due to the risk of overwhelming the national power grid. Google and Equinix have showcased their awareness of the implications of emissions, by pledging to make their data centres carbon neutral via the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact.

Operators and trade associations in the EU who have signed this pact have committed to make Europe carbon neutral by 2050. Actions include meeting a high standard of energy efficiency and water conservation, matching their electricity supply through the purchase of clean energy and the reuse, repair and recycle of servers and electrical equipment.

The UK has also enhanced its Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) with increased expectations on qualifying organisations. The mandatory legislative requirement is for all large organisations operating in the country and ensures major energy users are documenting and reporting on a clear list of opportunities available to reduce their energy usage. Administered by the Environment Agency, it requires businesses to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of energy usage across buildings, transport and industrial operations.

Data centre operators want to have a facility with a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), but currently there is no one silver bullet. Well-established technology developments such as adiabatic, evaporative and liquid cooling are a number of techniques used to reduce energy consumption.

Switching from traditional methods to rack-level, direct to chip cooling also delivers significant advantages such as reduced energy, space and downtime, as well as increased processing capacity.

It is believed liquid’s heat-carrying capacity can be up to 3,500 times greater than traditional air cooling methods. While it’s regarded as almost impossible to achieve a 1.0 PUE rating, the average ratio for a data centre in 2020 was around 1.58. By adopting and implementing tactics like those mentioned above, it will ensure operators are doing their part in boosting their own sustainability credentials.

Data centres consume a staggering amount of energy to maintain their operations on a 24/7 basis.

In some cases, the world’s biggest facilities use more energy than an entire country. Operators are having to adapt their business decisions and think more critically about how sites can stay energy efficient and still comply with ongoing regulations. The fact Amazon and Microsoft are not planning to invest further in Ireland shows that even the world’s biggest companies are constantly analysing their decisions. National Grid believes the future landscape for data centres in the UK will still be one of growth. With energy demand increasing significantly, this makes it difficult to predict what the rise will be. But initiatives such as ESOS and the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact are an important step for operators to agree and meet key objectives to help drive energy efficiencies in the decades to come.

PORTSMOUTH DATA CENTRE ORDERS 4.4MVA DIESEL GENERATOR INSTALLATION

To complete its pre-construction aims involving a first floor data centre project, a leading Hampshire data centre engaged Keysource.

Keysource is a global data centre & critical environment specialist, providing a range of services to support the full data centre and critical environment lifecycle from initial consultation, through to implementation and ongoing operational management.

A large part of this service involved the design and delivery of a backup power solution to meet the additional power load of the new-build project once complete.

WB Power was involved in the consultation process and the subsequent delivery of the power solution.

The original genset was removed

by WB Power and also purchased, saving the client removal hassle and the utilisation of an existing plant room with restricted space.

Having been engaged to provide pre-construction services for the first floor data centre construction.

Keysource approached WBPS to scope, design, install and commission a new back-up power solution to meet the additional power load of the new-build project once complete.

The first stage of the project involved the cranage installation of 2 x 2200kVA KOHLER prime rated generating sets, installed alongside two incumbent generators.

Due to spacing restrictions within the plant room, a bespoke framing solution was also designed. The generators were connected into the existing fuel tank arrangement, and new control systems were modified to ensure compatibility with the existing sync systems.

Following project scope, design and sign-off, the first milestone was to deliver and place the two T2200kVA KOHLER generators.

Using a third party cranage company, the two generating sets were craned into an adjacent position and then skated in. Due to severe space limitations, the silencers built for the generator couldn’t be hung from the ceiling in a traditional style. As an alternative solution, a bespoke silencer support frame was constructed.

The generators were installed complete with plant room acoustic equipment, alongside two incumbent Caterpillar generators.

They were then connected into the existing 10,000 litre fuel tank arrangement.

The newly-installed ComAp synchronising controllers were then modified to ensure compatibility with existing synchronising systems.

The all new infrastructure was delivered and installed by the WBPS Logistics and Project teams within predefined time frames and budgets.

This was one of the team’s more challenging and demanding diesel generator installation projects, says the company.

ata Processing Centres (DPC) or Data Centres house complex and modern computer equipment and network systems. Any electrical failure can be catastrophic as the large amount of information they handle would be at risk. These high-tech facilities must always be as secure as important the data they store are. Guaranteeing power supply under any circumstance is vital.

For some years now, Genesal Energy has been enhancing its commitment to the Data Centre sector. Its R&D department designs and manufactures generators perfectly adapted to applications where nothing can be left to improvisation. Maximising protection measures for the amount of information stored.

Genesal Energy generating sets have popular in the UK & Irish market for some time now. Recently, a key UK telecommunications companies bought a Genesal Energy genset to reinforce the emergency power supply in one of its main buildings.

Some of the specific features of the unit developed for project included an oversized fuel tank providing 24-hours of autonomy, a liquid collection tray - integrated into the tank itself - and an easy-toconnect cabinet for the unit’s power cables.

Genesal Energy holds a strong position in the international market. Its list of projects includes, for example, the one carried out for a data centre on Reunion Island. Here, Genesal Energy supplied two generators to feed the servers, switches and routers of a large data centre.

The two generator sets were built into 5500mm soundproof canopies, with an additional 2200mm sheet metal module (for the tailor-made 4,000-litre fuel tank) which was assembled on site. Once joined together, each canopy and the additional module formed a single unit of 7700mm.

These two generating sets were manufactured in compliance with the criteria required by the NF-E-37-312 standard, which in practice involved a number of extra requirements, namely: * Duplicating the starter and battery system, with the space this takes up inside the cabin and without having available mounts. * Creating a two-way fuel transfer system which allows either of the two groups to use the other’s fuel supply indistinctly.

Genesal Energy supplies a number of projects developed for data processing centres (or DPCs). In Madrid, for instance, the company has just supplied two generator sets with a comprehensive service (management of bureaucratic procedures, municipal permits to carry out the transfer, loading and unloading work, installation of a provisional set).

Apart from the very particular technical requirements that DPC generators must fulfil, when the project require a high degree of specialisation, this turnkey service is provided.

A Genesal Energy spokesman comments: “When we talk about DPCs, we have to bear in mind that there are a series of rules that any manufacturer has to strictly comply with. The first is to comply with the requirements set by the Uptime Institute. This international organisation certifies and determines the characteristics that Data Centres must meet and classifies the generator sets in different levels.

Namely: Tier 1, 2, 3 and 4. Tier 1 being used by small companies and Tier 4 by large corporations and multinationals. According to this classification, DPCs generators must be sized according to a certain power rating and comply with specific regulations.”

There are also two standards for that sizing: COP power, which allows the genset to work at 100% of its rated load in an unlimited way. Sizing the gensets based on this rating means selecting larger engines and making them work outside their most efficient performance point.

The other standard is the DCC power rating. Here, the genset operates powering the DPC at 100% of its rated load unlimitedly. This rating is based on diesel engine start-up statistics and allows the size of the gensets to be reduced with respect to the COP rating.

NEWS SUSTAINABILITY IS AN IMPORTANT CONCEPT TO APPLY TO GENSETS

DATA CENTRES RELY ON AN UNINTERRUPTED POWER SUPPLY

N

ew legislation, more taxes and tougher regulation are likely to make diesel steadily less attractive; for example the UK has prohibited the use of low tax ‘red diesel’ in data centre generators. Singapore has gone even further, imposing a moratorium on new data centres in 2019 partly due to environmental concerns, which was only recently lifted, explains Pierre Adrien Bel, Product Manager at KOHLER, - Large Diesel Generators & Clean Energies, EMEA. Microsoft estimates that diesel contributes less than 1% of its overall emissions, but it is still pushing to end its use of diesel gensets for emergency power by 2030. It is exploring options including biogas, natural gas, and hydrogen, but it’s not yet clear if it has any solutions that can scale sufficiently to replace diesel. Another option, followed by Facebook and other large players, is to locate data centres where the local power grid is proven to be robust, so there will be fewer outages to cover.

Diesel technology is constantly evolving. Genset vendors have invested massively in reducing emissions, and made substantial improvements. They are also working towards digitalisation, using the Internet of Things (IoT) and remote monitoring for improved diagnostics.

In-cylinder technologies reduce the pollutants emitted by the diesel engine. For example, shifting from mechanical fuel systems to electronic fuel injection can significantly reduce the creation of pollutants. Computer-aided engineering tools and computational fluid dynamics have also enabled the modelling of engine behaviour to become more sophisticated. Together, these and other in-cylinder developments, such as exhaust gas recirculation, have allowed optimisation of the system to improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

Another major area of improvement has been the reduction in ‘wet stacking’. This is when unburned fuel builds up in the engine’s exhaust system, leading to excessive wear and damage. This is usually addressed by burning off unused fuel every month by running generators at 30% of their rated capacity for at least 30 minutes – but this is an expensive waste of diesel and results in higher emissions, particularly for large data centres with multiple generators.

KOHLER has addressed wet stacking with highly optimised engine design, enabling operators to run their monthly generator tests with no load, only running a load test annually. This has a big impact, and can reduce overall generator emissions by up to 85%.

As well as the engine itself, after-treatment systems are used to reduce emissions. These systems include diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particle filters and selective catalytic reduction, to capture the different gases and particulates present in the engine’s output. New after-treatment technologies are continually improving the performance of these systems.

An attractive option is Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), also known as renewable diesel. This is produced from waste and residual fat from the food industry, as well as from non-food grade vegetable oils. HVO overcomes some of the problems typically associated with biofuels, such as instability and ageing when stored over long periods of time.

HVO can be used as a direct replacement for regular diesel without engine modifications, reducing carbon emissions by up to 90%, and can also be mixed with diesel in any proportion. Looking further ahead, lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells are two new technologies that are being widely considered for data centres, with many operators running trials. Fuel cells run on hydrogen, with water as the only waste product. If the hydrogen is made using renewable power, so-called ‘green hydrogen’, then they provide a zero-emission emergency power solution.

However, compared to diesel generators, batteries and fuel cells have disadvantages in terms of scalability and cost. For example, batteries that are big enough to use for back-up power are very expensive, and can have a significant environmental impact in their production and disposal.

Fuel cells would require substantial investment in infrastructure to transport and store enough hydrogen; for instance, 100 tons of hydrogen would be required to power 30MW of IT equipment for 48 hours. In the long-term these technologies hold great promise, but widespread deployment is likely to be at least 10 years in the future.

With the climate crisis becoming a major challenge for us all, genset manufacturers have a responsibility to improve environmental performance. This includes optimising their existing diesel technology, and developing new solutions that can bridge the gap to fully renewable power. Diesel gensets are going to be around for many years, and there is a lot we can do in that time to reduce their environmental impact.

UPS & GENSET CONTRACT FOR TELECOMS DATA HOSTING CENTRE A major UK telecoms company sought to expand its data centre operation and turned to Shenton Group to provide additional generators.

These were installed alongside the company’s existing 19 generators and in conjunction with an Uninterruptible Power Supply system support, all within and around the construction of a new, bespoke Energy Centre.

Shenton Group’s Sales and Marketing Director, Curtis Meek explained the magnitude of the project and some of the factors which Shenton Group needed to consider in order to achieve a timely, problem-free delivery: “Considering the existing 19

generators, two new generators needed configuring in conjunction with an Uninterruptible Power Supply System.

A key point to operations was the project needed to be orchestrated around the customer’s new Energy Centre building design work.

Shenton Group’s installation work had to be undertaken out of hours and also whilst the building was still being constructed”. The company now features a very capable and very reliable Uninterruptible Power Supply System.

The new generators, together with the company’s existing 19 generators on site now provides a total of 27,900mVA of standby power.

perating sustainably is at the top of the agenda for data centre leaders as they aim to become climate-neutral by 2030. James Giblette, Director of Digital Infrastructure – UK & Ireland at Legrand Data Center Solutions, discusses some of the ways organisations can reduce energy wastage in the data centre and meet sustainability initiatives.

In the current digital age, it is expected that data centres will continue to rise in both power consumption and complexity. In fact, it is predicted by IDC that the global datasphere will have expanded to 175 zettabytes by 2025. As the age of Big Data continues to grow, the challenge for data centre operators will be to discover how they support additional data while also meeting targets like those set out in the European Green Deal – an initiative to achieve climate-neutral, high-energy efficient and sustainable data centres by 2030.

So, what can organisations do to reduce energy wastage in the data centre and meet sustainability initiatives? Here we review some core areas for consideration.

1. Power monitoring and measurement It’s such a cliché, yet so true: you can’t manage what you don’t measure. The growth in data has resulted in an increased challenge for many in how to manage data centre power usage. Intelligent rack power distribution units (PDUs) can help address these challenges by allowing you to identify rack power consumption at the inlet, outlet and circuit breaker level. Inlet metering is crucial for determining overall server power usage and availability at the rack. Metering at the outlet can help you understand the power consumption of a specific device or server, and metering at the circuit breaker provides early warnings if a circuit becomes heavily loaded and runs the risk of tripping.

Intelligent PDUs offer granular remote power monitoring of current (amps), voltage, power (kVA, kW), power factor, and energy consumption (kWh) to +/– 1% accuracy, providing you with the most critical information to help your data centre remain stable and efficient.

2. Identifying underutilised or idle servers According to a recent survey by the Uptime Institute, approximately 30% of global data centre servers are either underutilised or completely idle. Idle servers are troublesome for the simple fact that they are inefficient and in large numbers can be highly expensive. Fortunately, intelligent PDUs with outlet level metering can help you to determine which servers are currently underutilised or inefficient and better understand how a specific server (or device) is consuming power. Through detailed power consumption metering, you can not only effectively monitor usage, but you can ultimately reduce your costs throughout the entire year.

Locating and correcting an idle server is made easier when you combine a DCIM solution with your intelligent rack PDUs, which will give you real-time insights into your data centre’s assets. From owners to location, application information to power utilisation trends, the DCIM software allows you to analyse all of your intelligent PDU data through a single pane of glass. By using the DCIM, you can easily identify where you have an idle server.

3. Deploy environmental sensors to your racks With the IT industry’s increased focus on remote operations, more rack PDU manufacturers have begun offering environmental sensors.

These include sensors to measure rack air temperature at the server inlets, as well as the humidity, airflow, vibration, smoke, water and air pressure. Some PDUs may have pre-installed sensors; while others provide for optional, plug-in external sensors.

4. Implement remote power control Test and other non-production servers can often be powered off to conserve power during non-peak hours. To begin a remote power cycling programme within your organisation, start by metering your current servers to determine the most common times during which they are not in use.

INTEGRATING STANDBY GENSETS INTO DATA CENTRES Robert Breadon, a Senior Project Engineer at FG Wilson, comments: Internet connectivity is growing exponentially and as the “internet of things” extends to more devices, usage is only going to grow faster.

Predictions for 2020 are as high as 75 billion connected devices.

And as we come to rely more on the internet in our daily lives, our tolerance of data outages is diminishing just as rapidly, with loss of connectivity resulting in damaged customer confidence, injury to brands and loss of customers.

There are many causes of data centre outages but loss of power doesn’t need to be one of them and a well-chosen generator set can take this concern away.

If you’re thinking of installing a standby generator into a data centre’s power system, there are several key decisions: * Data centre generator set selection *Data centre continuous ratings *Generator set package integration *Generator set control systems *Generator set project delivery.

The first and most important decision is choosing the right generator set rating to meet demands from the critical UPS / IT and cooling / chiller leads (also called the N demand). If the data centre is likely to expand, it’s important to consider that this demand may change over time.

The decision on whether the generator set will supply power at high or low voltage depends on the size and overall scale of the data centre, on the tier distribution topology and on the actual space available to accommodate the generator sets. Typically when the N load requirements are above 4 - 5 MW, high voltage is the best option.

The critical UPS / IT load can influence generator selection in several ways: * UPS battery recharge which can be 10-20% of UPS rating. This power may need to be covered by the generator. In some cases, an operator may opt not to recharge when running the generator set.

This will affect the design autonomy when transferred back to the mains and presents a risk which the data centre operator must weigh up. *Modern UPSs present quite low levels of harmonic current distortion

(THDi) to the generator set although in situations where the UPSs are in bypass mode, the high harmonic distorting IT / Server load needs to be supplied by the generator set which may require an over-sized alternator to ensure the quality of voltage waveform is not affected. *Most modern IT loads present a leading power factor by nature. This does not create an issue for UPSs in normal mode, but again if the UPS is in bypass mode, the leading power factor load must be supplied by the generator set directly and this may cause voltage instability issues which may require an over-sized alternator.

It’s important to note that the effect of UPSs in bypass mode will depend on the UPS kVA rating in proportion to the generator / generators rating.

A supplier, such as Power Electrics, will be able to provide detailed support on this and other aspects of generator set selection.

The running duty of the generator set in a data centre application is very important, especially when we look at the requirements defined by the Uptime Institute.

FG Wilson in conjunction with its sister company Perkins has developed a Data Centre continuous rating which delivers unlimited hours of annual operation with no restriction on the average load factor up to 100% constant load.

This rating complies fully with Uptime Institute Tier III and IV continuous operation requirements and is currently available from the P400-1 through to P2500-1 models.

After determining the rating and number of generator sets required to meet site load demands, the physical integration of the units means consideration of ambient, noise, local planning regulation and fuel autonomy.

The outcome of these considerations will influence the generator set package installation in terms of noise attenuators, exhaust silencers, cooling systems, package footprint, height and fuel storage.

For example, if a very low noise level is required this will greatly increase the size of the attenuation, exhaust silencers and the overall package footprint, which of course will increase the package cost.

It’s vitally important that the criteria outlined are as accurate as possible at the concept stage of the project.

Conclusion Reducing carbon costs and energy consumption within the data centre is at the top of many organisations’ sustainability, CSR, and efficiency agendas, in order to achieve the European Green Deal’s goal of making data centres climate-neutral by 2030. Adopting one or more of these simple energy-saving initiatives in your data centre can be made quickly and economically and could see your IT energy wastage drastically improve.

MULTI SENTRY FOR DATA CENTRE IN A MILITARY BUNKER Kent - January 2024: The MST’s combination of performance and compact footprint make it the ideal choice for cloud hosting data centre housed in old underground bunker. oused in a former Ministry of Defence nuclear bunker in Kent a cloud hosting data centre (previously known as ‘The Bunker’) offers clients enough protection to literally withstand any army.

It looks impregnable too thanks to its unique underground design and ultrasecure location.

As an enterprise offering secure space where infrastructure can’t afford to fail, having a reliable and fully working UPS and supporting infrastructure in place is crucial.

This ensures Cyberfort and its customers continue to operate without disruption regardless of the situation.

However, until recently the data centre’s existing power protection setup comprising 6 x 80 kVA UPS was approaching its end of life, with the cost involved in maintaining and running these UPS systems becoming increasingly more expensive and unviable.

The decision was made to phase out the existing UPS and replace with newer more efficient technology.

Authorised Riello UPS reseller and service partner Specialist Power Systems is a long-standing supplier for Cyberfort, having looked after the UPS at both their sites in Kent and Newbury since 2008. They were asked to specify a replacement, but the unique installation environment threw up several significant challenges.

The data centre is housed in a bunker 5 metres underground with only a relatively small opening available to lower the replacement equipment into place, while each item couldn’t exceed a 1,000 kg lifting beam rating.

These factors limited the choice of solutions as some options simply wouldn’t fit or would exceed the maximum weight capacity of the hoisting system used to lower the equipment down into the server rooms.

Adam Baverstock, Sales Director of Specialist Power Systems and the project lead, commented: “I think this was a unique project that really tested our engineers and installation team due to the difficult surroundings of the site, so to bring this project in budget and ahead of schedule was a credit to the teamwork needed.”

Due to the complex nature of the project, the transfer of the critical load from the existing UPS to the new one was staggered over a 12-month period, with the existing infrastructure having to remain in situ throughout.

This required Specialist Power Systems and its approved sub-contractor Lewis Electrical to undertake a range of onsite electrical installation works, including 2 new 630A electrical supplies from A and B substations, as well as new switchboards and distribution boards in various data halls across the facility.

Work on the site involved running infrastructure more than 100 metres and trenching new low voltage cables as much as 85 metres.

GAS GENSETS

2 MW BIOGAS PLANT SUPPLIES 4,000 HOUSEHOLDS WITH ENERGY Gas gensets reliably produce electricity and heat on a decentralized basis and significantly contribute to power generation. Gensets of the medium MWM series, TCG 2020 and TCG 3020, are very popular, for example, in hospitals, data centers, shopping centers, biogas plants, or the food industry. With a power range between 1 and 2.3 MW, the gas gensets of this series are ideally suited for decentralized energy projects like those in the UK.

A

newly-built biogas plant in Lozovo (North Macedonia) reliably supplies electrical energy to around 4,000 households with its two TCG 2020 V12 gas gensets.

Construction of the plant began in December 2020, and power generation started precisely two years later.

The MWM gensets supplied for this project were of the high-efficiency 1 MW design. The engines, powered exclusively by renewable energy and organic waste, also provide 2.1 MW of thermal energy.

But that’s not all: approximately 30,000 tons of natural fertilizer are produced annually as a byproduct of biological processes and used in local agriculture.

The power plant, an investment of Bio Enterprise, was planned and realized by the engineers and technicians of Feroinvest and EMS (Energy Maintenance Solutions).

Feroinvest is known in North Macedonia and

beyond for its expertise in renewable energy.

Biogas is usually produced by the anaerobic digestion of organic waste in a so-called digester. Instead of allowing the waste to decompose uncontrollably and release gases into the atmosphere, it is stored in an oxygendeficient environment, such as a covered lagoon or stainless steel tank.

From there, methane is extracted and used as fuel to generate heat and electricity. This way, biogas plants can convert organic waste into energy and valuable by-products such as fertilizer. In addition, biogas plants can continuously generate electricity, which is particularly valuable given the current shift to renewable energy.

Wonderplant S.A, one of Greece’s largest tomato producers, also relies on cogeneration with MWM gas gensets Made in Germany. The Greek vegetable grower produces up to 15,000 tons of tomatoes annually.

“MWM Benelux B.V. 2021 has installed a new cogeneration plant, including flue gas cleaning for Wonderplant.

For the “Wonderplant 2” project and the associated expansion of the greenhouse area, MWM Benelux B.V. installed another cogeneration unit in 2021, powered by eight MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas generator sets.

In 2011, the first greenhouse of the vegetable grower Wonderplant S.A, with an area of 105,000 square meters, was built.

In 2013, the first cogeneration plant with four MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas gensets with a total capacity of eight MWel was installed by MWM Benelux B.V. to manage the greenhouse.

Since then, the MWM gensets have been in continuous operation and have completed over 70,000 operating hours.

In 2018, the greenhouse area was expanded by another 55,000 square metres.

To handle the increased demand for heat and electricity following the expansion of the greenhouse area, MWM Benelux B.V. 2021 has installed a new cogeneration plant, including flue gas cleaning for Wonderplant.

The CHP plant is powered by eight MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas gensets with a total output of 9.6 MWel and 10.4 MWth. Both CHP plants have a total capacity of up to 17.9 MWel. The greenhouses can be optimally heated thanks to the new CHP plant with the MWM gas gensets.

The cogeneration plant of “Wonderplant 2” has an annual electrical capacity of 76,800 MW and an annual heat generation of 83,200 MW. After the commissioning of the plant in 2021, the Greek MWM distributor A.EI.M.A S.A. has taken over the maintenance and service work for Wonderplant.

The CHP plant ensures that around 15,000 tons of tomatoes can be harvested annually under optimal growing conditions.

With an average per capita consumption in the European Union of 31 kilograms per year, the company produces enough tomatoes to supply a major city with around half a million inhabitants. This also includes the demand for tomatoes for ketchup or sauces. www.mwm.net

HELPING WITH BIOGAS CLEANUP IN HEAT & POWER OPERATIONS Camfil was was asked to provide protection to a facility’s gas engines they were being used to generate heat and electricity from biogas coming from the AD plant process in a facility near St. Albans. The biogas produced is heavily laden with H2S (hydrogen sulphide), a gas which can cause corrosion and pitting inside most kinds of gas engines. This was a problem which really had to be solved.

ollowing consultations Camfil recommended and subsequently provided a unit from the ProCarb range of industrial molecular filters.

Camfil’s HDB (Horizontal Deep Bed), which was sized to offer a long contact time for the Campure 32 molecular filtration media. This media is specific to Camfil, and made for the high efficiency removal of H2S. The client Clarke did not have concentration level data for the expected H2S at this location, so Camfil utilised its unique life determination program to offer an expected lifetime for a range of different concentration levels.

This allowed the client to understand the effect differing levels of H2S will have on the lifetime of the media, and therefore plan maintenance appropriately. Camfil provided 2 off units to run in a duty and standby arrangement so that one

unit can have media maintenance whilst the other unit continues to provide protection for the gas engines.

The gas engine is now protected against the H2S gas ensuring its longevity. The Camfil HDB gas filtration unit is recognised as playing a vital key role in the processing of biogas at anaerobic digestion sites, to offer a clean and efficient level of gas for the engine burn.

ProCarb HDB These are rectangular deep-bed gas scrubbers configurated for vertical airflow and single deep bed of ISO 10121 activated carbon and Camfil activated alumina media. They are said to ideal for removal of molecular contamination in exhaust air applications with limited air flows.

DATA CENTRE AT NEWPORT SOUTH WALES

To guarantee constant power supply to the data centre campus in Newport South Wales the site power backup is currently supported by 60 standby diesel generator sets (KOHLER type KD1650, 3MWth). These gensets operate on a very short-term basis during the year, typically for testing purposes only, or in the very rare event of a loss of power. Industrial and Marine Silencers Ltd was responsible for the IMSeco SCR System and exhaust silencers all mounted on a skid with safety rails and swing gate for roof access.

T

he data centre campus in Newport South Wales is one of the largest in both the UK and Europe, currently offering some 70MW of constructed capacity and rapidly expanding to over 200MW across the original building and two new adjacent plots.

Originally opened in 2009 the datacentre was acquired and expanded in 2020 with most of the capacity being taken up by hyperscale operators, however there are dedicated halls for “smaller clients” seeking use of the facility.

Within the UK this is one of only two wholesale focussed campuses away from London and the M25, so offers diversity at scale, as well as servicing the needs of the smaller local market from south Wales or the Bristol/south-west England region.

The new data centre facility which is located to the southeast of the existing data centre was recently given the go ahead by the local authority area of Newport City Council to be constructed.

To guarantee constant power supply to the data centre, even in the event of a catastrophic power outage, the site power backup is supported by 60 standby diesel generator sets (Kohler type

KD1650, 3MWth,).

These gensets operate on a very short-term basis during the year, typically for testing purposes only, or in the very rare event of a loss of power.

However, the operator was required to obtain an industrial permit from Natural Resources Wales, due to the total thermal capacity of the proposed standby generators exceeding the Part A (1) criterion of 50 MWth of the Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD) that stipulates a maximum NOx limit.

This limit is 190mg/Nm3@15%O2 for the generators.

Newport City Council in its “Air Quality Supplementary Planning Guidance (2018)” suggest that the principal pollutants associated with combustion engine emissions (standby generators, vehicles, construction plant) are oxides of nitrogen, which forms nitrogen-dioxide in the atmosphere.

This meant that the engines needed to be retrofitted with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) which was supplied by IMS (Industrial and Marine silencers) to reduce NOx levels by up to -90/95%.

“The system is supplied with a Bunded AdBlue Tank which is fitted with a KUS Type Level Sensor (Pump and In-line Filter) that draws the AdBlue from within the tank and delivers it to a pressure rail where it gets pressurised for injection into the exhaust. The amount of adblue is determined by the exhaust flowrate and other information from engines.”

The 60 x Kohler KD1650 gensets are fitted with KD45V20 (45Ltr/1200kw) Engines which are all housed within an acoustic enclosure with Air Inlet/Air Extract Attenuators (as shown below) and the roof mounted SCR system and twin silencers from IMS that not only reduces NOx levels far below the allowable MCPD Limit of 190mg/NM3@15%O2 but also reduces noise levels below 65DB(A)@1m.

IMS engineers installed an IMS Primary Silencer followed by the SCR System - plus a secondary silencer. These were mounted on a skid with safety rails and swing gate for roof access along with our Electronic Control Panel with a prewired loom that feeds all sensors/injectors on the SCR system.

That means once lowered into position on the roof of each enclosure all that was required to be done was to connect the power to IMS cabinets along with a CanBus Signal and the adblue tank sited above the Slab Fuel Tank and commissioning could commence.

The IMSeco SCR System provided is a “Closed Loop” controlled Dosing and Monitoring Package with NOx, Temperature and Back Pressure Sensors, Airless Injectors and an ECU housed within a Control Panel that not only guarantees to meet the MCPD Emission Levels but because of its configurable AdBlue Dosing Strategy can be set to provide the most economical adblue consumption.

On completion of the commissioning a report was generated to demonstrate MCPD compliance.

In this case rather than just meeting the 190mg/m3@15%O2 NOx limits set by the MCPD Directive, IMS in fact reduced the Raw NOx from 1729mg/ Nm3@15%O2 to 85mg/ Nm3@15%O2 which is a NOx reduction of approximately -95%, less than half of the MCPD allowable limit of 190mg/ Nm3@15%O2.

MAINTAINING CRITICAL AIRFLOW & TEMPERATURES IN A UK DATA CENTRE Data centres generate huge amounts of heat, so effective cooling is just as paramount as a reliable source of power, reports Aggreko. In this Case Study from the UK a data centre specialist reported multiple self-contained unit chiller failures. This would eventually lead to data being compromised – which was simply not an option.

C

hiller failures can give rise to serious problems in data centre environments. A company spokesman commented on the issues behind the problem affecting this site: “Our customer used dozens of small air conditioning / split units to provide critical cooling, but this was not enough to maintain the correct airflow, or the optimum temperature for the facility.

“They reacted by moving some data to another hall, but this was not a solution to the problem.

They needed cooling quickly, reliably and above all, it needed to provide the right air and conditions for the racks.”

Essential facts about what was eventually required are as follows: *2.5MW was required for cooling duty *2X 1250 kVA generators were installed *Time from call-to-install was 48 hours *Amount of cabling eventually required: 4.5km.

The spokesman continued: “We provided

2.5MW of cooling duty put in place as an emergency solution to support the hall in a complete outage.

“We designed a resilient and bespoke package with multiple power supplies, N+1 redundancy, chillers and air handling units (AHU’s). The package incorporated: 3 x 800 kW chillers, 2 x 1250 kVA generators, 4 x 300 kW air handlers and 4.5km of cabling.”

He explains: “This solution was able to be deployed and went live within 48 hours of the initial call - the customer contacted Aggreko on Saturday, we arranged a site survey the next day and began the install that evening, the package went live on the Monday.”

“Once we had established the initial emergency cooling duty, we then were able to work on a more long-term solution. This included off-hiring the generators and running 4.5km of cable into 2 x distribution boards within the data centre to utilise site power. This solution was installed

The entire package worked effectively and the customer ultimately asked to extend the hire for a further six months.

HYDROGEN-READY SYSTEM NOW INSTALLED FOR STERLING PHARMA Sterling Pharma Solutions is a global pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO).

As part of its sustainability strategy, Sterling partnered with Clarke Energy to act as principal contractors, to design, construct and maintain a bespoke hydrogen-ready, gas fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

W

ith on-site energy generation at the Sterling Pharma Solutions facility in Northumberland is estimated to be 40% more efficient than off-site generation.

The site now provides a more sustainable solution to buying electricity, as well as providing steam and hot water to the facility.

Sterling’s manufacturing process is heat and power intensive. Their refrigeration needs require temperatures ranging from -20 °C to -90 °C, along with heavy machinery running 24/7.

Clarke Energy worked in partnership with Sterling to not only provide the most efficient energy solution, but managed the design and construction of the CHP plant, reports the company.

Clarke Energy assessed the site’s half hourly data and installed a 3.4MW Jenbacher 620 gas engine, two gas fired and one composite boiler, to replace two existing boilers.

The boilers are synchronised to respond to site steam load and prioritise waste heat contribution

(lead source) from the engine to combination boiler.

A new building was constructed onsite, with Clarke Energy managing the scheme from assisted planning, groundworks, steel fabrication to completion.

Now commissioned, the CHP plant provides 98% of the site’s electricity and heat and will reduce emissions by 400 tonnes (compared to the 2019 baseline year).

There was an option to oversize the CHP, but careful consideration was given to creating available space for future engine upgrades and potential future hydrogen equipment.

Sterling’s ultimate goal is to become entirely carbon neutral, the first step is to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2025.

By installing a CHP plant the site has drastically decarbonised its heat supply and the plan is to upgrade to a blend of hydrogen, once available.

CHP forms part of the facility’s net-zero plans with future renewable hybrids in planning stages.

Looking at the Jenbacher 620 gas engine The J620 is Type 6 family’s “workhorse”, a V20-cylinder efficient power generation solution, with power output of up to 3,360 kW and electrical efficiency up to 45.9%. This features: *Electrical Output - 3,041 - 3,360 kW *Thermal Output - 2,769 - 3,560 kW *Voltage - 6.3kV, 10.5kV *Electrical Efficiency - up to 45.9 %*Thermal Efficiency - up to 47.5 % Type 6 engines have been designed with features which enhance heat recovery, assure stable combustion, reduce emissions, and increase efficiency - taking the Jenbacher line to new levels of performance, says the manufacturer.

A centrally-located purged precombustion chamber in the 620 helps provide optimal ignition conditions.

The spark plug ignition energy is amplified in the pre-combustion chamber, facilitating stable and reliable combustion.

Miller valve timing creates reduced compression temperature and an increased safety margin to knocking limits, providing improved ignition timing and high efficiency.

Combined Heat and Power Module (CHP Module) solutions allow customers to generate power and heat simultaneously at a very high total efficiencies, reaching 90% and even more.

CHP Modules can be installed inside a building or inside a container.

The usual scope of supply involves the engine and alternator installed on the frame, control panel, gas train, heat exchangers including exhaust gas heat exchanger.

These CHP Modules can generate hot water or steam at various parameters and can be integrated with your existing heat infrastructure.

PROVIDING A VITAL BACKUP POWER SYSTEM FOR A LONDON HOSPITAL WB Power Services (WBPS) was tasked designing and installing a power solution for a London Hospital which is one of the largest community health service providers in the UK. WBPS’s power solutions had to provide a vital backup power source for the facilities in case of a power failure.

T

his London Hospital is one of the largest community health service providers in the UK. It is a major acute hospital that offers very specialist care for the most complex of injuries and illnesses, with over 6,000 staff and around 1,000 beds. Today it serves a population of 1.3 million across London.

The project had four main aims: *GENERATOR INSTALLATION involving 2 x 1000kVA generating sets installed onsite; * FUEL MANAGEMENT SOLUTION involving a common 5,000 litre fuel tank installed in the inlet premium; *EQUIPMENT REMOVAL - the WBPS team was responsible for the removal of the previous generator set and the additional installation of ancillary equipment; *PLANT ROOM INSTALLATION The generating sets had to be installed in an existing plant room with limited space.

Other requirements onsite included sound restrictions, control systems and electrical installation works.

A spokesman commednted: “this was an

incredibly diverse and bespoke project for the WB Power team, the installed solution comprised of incumbent equipment removal, civil works and the installation of 2 x 1000 kVA generating sets in an existing plant room.

“The generating set was installed along with accompanying ancillary equipment such as common 5000 litre fuel tank, plant room attenuation equipment, exhaust flue, new switchboard and electrical installation/migration works.”

When carrying initial site survey to gain a thorough understanding of client requirements, it became apparent that there was an extensive civil works requirement. The proposed switch room was not long enough for the installation of the new switchboard.

Following discussions, it was agreed that the end wall of the switch room would be removed.

In addition to this, there was also a requirement to remove additional walls, the construction of a concrete base for the new generating set, aperture ceiling repairs and finally, the installation of two new single access doors.

“ The generating sets were configured to be fed fuel from a common 5,000-litre tank installed in the inlet plenum.

The tank was provided with a fuel polishing system to ensure the fuel wasn’t contaminated with water, microbial growth and solid particulates.”

WB Power Services’ team also had to contend with the removal and ‘disposal’ of the sites incumbent generating set and accompanying ancillary equipment.

Following a detailed analysis of the hospitals power requirements, the WB Power engineers proposed the installation of 2 x 1000kVA prime rated generating sets.

The generating sets were configured to be fed fuel from a common 5000 litre tank installed in the inlet plenum. The tank was provided with a fuel polishing system to ensure the fuel wasn’t contaminated with water, microbial growth and solid particulates.

A secondary fill system was also installed; comprising both duty & standby transfer pumps, which was located adjacent to an existing set of pumps in the boiler room. Finally, WB Power installed new fuel pipework between the pumps and the fuel tank, but capped the pump inlet pipework, which would be connected at a later date.

Due to the environment, there were strict sound levels that the newly-installed generating sets had to achieve. To accomplish this, WB Power proposed the supply and installation of exhaust gas silencers, which would achieve a sound level of 65 dBA @ 1m.

The flues had to be extended to roof level and follow the existing flue route.

Particulate filters were then installed on the roof of the building to ensure exhuast soot was captured and stored, greatly reducing emissions.

Switchboard & electrical works As part of the installation, WB Power installed a new LV switchboard, which included ComAp control modules. In addition, WB Power also provided two remote panels, which were installed to control the synchronising at two remote switchboards. Included within this was design services, FAT attendance, manuals and commissioning assistance.

Following completion of the installation, the sets were commissioned utilising a resistive load bank test.

This was conducted by WB Power’s in-house commissioning team, with one of their Commissioning Engineers onsite conducting the tests over a 10-day period. Whilst onsite the engineer was also able to deliver formal training to the Hospital Engineers. www.wbpsltd.co.uk 33

Guest Speaker: Andy Green ‘Fastest Man on Earth’ Green is the current holder of the world land speed record, and the first person to break the sound barrier on land. On 25 September 1997 in ThrustSSC he beat the previous record in Black Rock Desert, US, reaching a speed of 714.144 miles per hour (1,149.303 km/h). On 15 October 1997, 50 years and 1 day after the sound barrier was broken in aerial flight by Chuck Yeager, Green reached 763.035 miles per hour (1,227.986 km/h), the first supersonic record (Mach 1.016). His call sign was “Dead Dog”. As the vehicle crossed the speed of sound it created a sonic boom.

He is now working on a new record attempt to break the 1,000 miles per hour (1,600 km/h) mark with Bloodhound LSR. His next land speed attempt was intended to be for MG in a specially modified MG F called the MG EX255; however, due to the time required for modifications, the project did not finish on time and that attempt never happened.

Andy Green’s most recent challenge Andy Green’s most recent challenge was the driving of the JCB Dieselmax car, attempting to take the Diesel Land Speed Record over 300 mph (480 km/h). Having tested the vehicle on his own RAF base, Wittering, on 22 August 2006, he broke the previous record of 236 miles per hour (380 km/h) (set in August 1973), after attaining an average speed of 328.767 miles per hour (529.099 km/h) during two runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah. Twenty four hours later, Green broke his own record, achieving a speed of 350.092 miles per hour (563.418 km/h) on 23 August 2006.

He qualified as a fighter pilot on F-4 Phantom and Tornado F3 aircraft. In 2003 Green was promoted to Wing Commander. He later became Officer Commanding Operations Wing at RAF Wittering near Peterborough. Green was the captain of the RAF team at the Cresta Run, where he used an experimental French toboggan. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1998 New Year Honours and was awarded the Segrave Trophy by the Royal Automobile Club in 1997.

In 2006 he was awarded the John Cobb Trophy by the British Racing Drivers’ Club for “a success of outstanding character” and an Honorary degree from Staffordshire University in July 2008.

FOURTH CARBON BUDGET IN EASY REACH - BIGGEST CHALLENGE IS YET TO COME New statistics released by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) have confirmed that UK emissions have been halved from 1990 to 2022.

Official statistics released by the Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero confirm the UK to be the first major economy to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% between 1990 and 2022, while growing its economy by 79%. The UK plans to cut emissions by 68% by 2030.

The Association for Decentralised Energy’s (ADE) Senior Policy Manager, Chris Friedler, comments: “These figures are a major good news story for our nation and the world, and the UK can be proud of its role in leading the charge in the fight against climate change.
