Work has started at the firm’s specialist factory in the Czech Republic and is expected to complete in December 2020.

The custom-built winches and control system will be shipped from Rotterdam to Leith. At the same time the 250kW demonstrator’s lattice tower is being fabricated by Leicester engineering specialists Kelvin Power.

The full 16-metre high rig will then be assembled at a grid-connected site at the port of Leith for testing to begin in spring 2021.

The Scottish energy innovators have recently raised over £1.5 million for their technology development through a crowdfunding campaign and have also received a £640,000 grant from Innovate UK, the UK Government’s innovation agency.

Commenting on the project, Gravitricity Lead Engineer Miles Franklin said: “Our demonstrator will use two 25-tonnes weights suspended by steel cables. In one test we’ll drop the

Local energy network innovation needed on journey to net zero emissions Local energy network operators must play a significant role in balancing consumer demand for energy with available capacity if the UK is to achieve its net zero carbon emissions goal.

Symon Gray, Head of Networks at Energy Assets Networks, says that the move toward greater electrification and the decision to outlaw new petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles by 2035, will require independent distribution network owners (IDNOs) to bring greater innovation to local network design and load management.

He said: “The government’s decision to phase out new fossil fuelled vehicles – including part electrified hybrids – earlier than anticipated means that we need to accelerate plans to create smart local networks capable of managing load more effectively than ever before.

“We need to be ready for the electric vehicle revolution through more innovative network design and load management while integrating renewables generation and battery storage into network design. In this way, we can be a key contributor to a lower carbon future.”

Energy Assets Networks (IDNO) and Energy Assets Pipelines (IGT), its gas transporter equivalent, have grown fast since being launched two years ago – capturing an impressive 5% market share of planned new residential development network adoptions in Britain.

Wind farms to power every home by 2030

All-Energy 2020 4th-5th November SEC Glasgow Offshore wind farms will generate enough electricity to power every home in the UK within a decade, Boris Johnson announced at the Conservative party conference on October 6th, 2020.

The PM added that the government would be providing £160m to upgrade ports and factories by building turbines to help the country "build back greener”.. The plan aims to create 2,000 jobs in construction and support 60,000 more.

PM Johnson believes the UK could become "the world leader in clean wind energy".

He explains: "Your kettle, your washing machine, your cooker, your heating, your plug-in electric vehicle - the whole lot of them will get their juice cleanly and without guilt from the breezes that blow around these islands." .

The new scheme will see the money invested into manufacturing in Teesside and Humber in northern England, as well as sites in Scotland and Wales.

PM Johnson said the government was raising its target for offshore wind power capacity by 2030 from 30 gigawatts to 40 gigawatts.

These new commitments are the first stage of a 10-point plan for a "green industrial revolution" from the government, with No 10 promising the rest of the details later this year to "accelerate our progress towards net zero emissions by 2050".

The net zero target means greenhouse gas emissions would be dramatically slashed and any remaining emissions offset, neutralising environmental impacts and slowing climate change.

The UK is currently the world leader in offshore wind, with more installed capacity than any other country. Already, offshore wind powers the equivalent of 4.5 million homes annually and will generate over 10% of UK electricity by 2020.

The cost of new offshore wind has fallen by 50% since 2015 and it is now one of the lowest cost options for new power in the UK – cheaper than new gas and nuclear power.

Between 2016 and 2021 nearly £19bn is being invested in offshore wind in the UK both publicly and privately. This investment supports thousands of jobs across the UK in manufacturing, project development, construction and operations.

The offshore wind sector has set out ambitious plans for a transformative sector deal which will generate tens of thousands of highly-productive, skilled jobs across the UK and make offshore wind the backbone of a clean, reliable and affordable energy system.

Small and medium sized wind turbines are empowering businesses, communities and families, including in rural areas, to switch to clean energy and manage their energy costs.

The UK has been manufacturing and exporting smaller-sized wind turbines for over 40 years and is a leader in the technology with a number of UK manufacturers of turbines suited to home, business and community scale generation.

Decentralised low carbon generation will be at the heart of a smart energy system, which can enable cost savings across locak and national energy systems, including by making greater use of local generation and flexibility to meet local demand spikes.

A spokesman for Reed comments: “Because of the postponement of COP26, the UN’s Climate Change Summit, which was due to take place in the first half of November, we were offered November dates by the SEC. We consulted with the vast majority of our exhibitors and key stakeholders who overwhelming agreed that the best option would be to reschedule the show in November.

He continues: “Obviously, the health and safety of our exhibitors, speakers, visitors and staff remains our number one priority and we will continue to monitor the situation and continue to consult with all key stakeholders throughout the coming months.

“We believe that postponing the show to November will enable us to deliver the true value of this event later in the year, and would like to thank our exhibitors, speakers, partners and suppliers.”

NEWS GOAL ACHIEVED! WEMBLEY SUCCESS FOR HELEC

Cummins gas generator installations power the equivalent of 52,000 homes Since its launch in March 2019, Cummins Inc.’s HSK78G gas generator installations have achieved an installation capacity of more than 80MW equivalent to powering around 52,000 homes.

With increased demand for low-carbon power generation, organisations across all industries are seeking alternative sources of energy to reduce their carbon footprint whilst providing a reliable and robust performance. To meet this need, Cummins invested heavily in expanding its gas range, launching the HSK78G gas generator range in March 2019.

With a power density of up to 2MW, Cummins lean-burn gas generators are designed to provide reliable power for a diverse set of industries from mining and manufacturing, to shopping malls and hospitals. With fuel flexibility across the range, HSK78G generators use natural, low-cost, low-BTU, free fuel sources that would otherwise be considered waste products.

“We’re seeing increased interest from a diverse range of industries, all of which are considering the switch to low-carbon alternatives for power generation. With marketleading thermal efficiency at 47.1% and 2110 kW of thermal output for heating, cooling and steam generation, the generator series provides significant environmental benefits.

They can also run in parallel with combined heat and power (CHP) systems, which can convert 70-90% of the energy of the fuel that is burned into useful electricity or heat, further increasing sustainable credentials,” said Ann-Kristin deVerdier, Cummins Energy Management Executive Director.

The HSK78G has been successfully installed across a wide range of applications, from horticultural, logistics and manufacturing operations, through to providing gas power for power stations and backup power to the National Grid.

“We’ve worked hard to develop a solution that meets market expectations of performance, uptime and running costs, while also meeting the need to reduce emissions. The HSK78G generator series provides reliable power no matter how extreme the fuel source or operating conditions for both prime and peaking power applications,” added deVerdier.

The generator has proven itself in a number of prime power applications, most notably for combined heat and power (CHP) application recently accomplished for Varegro, a Belgian horticultural company. With a total return greater than 100%, the company was able to meet all its energy needs, including lighting, CO2 recuperation and hot water requirements, all whilst producing sufficient excess power to sell it back to the national grid.

The HSK78G offers reliable power no matter the existence of a grid infrastructure.

For Walker & Son (Hauliers) Ltd., a transportation and storage company based in the U.K., the benefits are huge, providing both facilities with robust and cost-effective off-grid power generation capabilities, coupled with a high electrical efficiency of up to 44.2%.

Peaking power and grid parallel applications Suited to peaking power applications, gas generators can be used as back-up power systems, supporting the grid during times of high demand, as well as offsetting the fluctuations of renewable power sources such as wind and solar energy. Working with TMS Grid Ltd., an engineering and consultancy company based in the U.K., 10 HSK78G units will provide a total of 20MW of uninterruptible backup power. Alongside the product’s high efficiency, the generators’ Grid Code Compliance (GCC) certification enabled TMS Grid Ltd. to demonstrate compliance to the G99 U.K. requirements. Additionally, the HSK78G units meet the latest emissions limits set by the new medium combustion plant directive (MCPD) removing the need for exhaust aftertreatment systems, which in turn offers a lower total cost of ownership.

A further 11 units have recently been installed in a hybrid power station based in Western Australia, offering a total of 22MW installed capacity. With a mix of solar, wind and battery technology, the HSK78G generator models will be used to stabilise the power supply, providing fewer voltage and frequency disturbances and faster recovery times.

NEWS Pinnacle Power will now operate and maintain the Bridgwater Energy-from-Waste Project in Somerset

P

innacle Power has successfully been appointed as Operations and Maintenance contractor on a 20- year contract for a 7.75MW Resource Recovery facility in Bridgwater, Somerset.

The appointment follows Equitix, a leading UK infrastructure investor, and Iona Capital, the specialist environmental investment and fund management firm, announcing the acquisition of the £72 million Energy from Waste (EfW) facility.

Pinnacle Power will directly employ up to 25 full-time operational staff and process approximately 100,000 tonnes of commercial and municipal refuse derived fuel per annum, which would otherwise have been destined for landfill. Construction will commence in 2019 and the facility will begin commercial operation in 2021.

Moving into EfW is a natural progression for Pinnacle Power to expand the current energy and district heating business. EfW is a vital part of the low carbon embedded energy business which is key to the medium to long-term delivery of low carbon heat to district heating networks.

The design and build will be delivered by STC Power SRL, a specialist in the supply of small-scale thermal energy plants, and Geminor UK Limited, a leading exporter and supply of Refuse Derived Fuel, will supply the waste.

NEWS Genesal Energy supplies emergency power to one of the most luxurious business centres in Manchester

enesal Energy has supplied a GEN2250HC genset for one of the UK’s most luxurious business centres, located in Manchester. The generator is designed to provide power in the event of a mains failure at a key business centre,containing high-class offices, meeting rooms and training centres.

These are the facilities which make it one of the most renowned complexes in the north of England.

A company spokesman commented: “Having listened to our client’s needs and after analyzing the high capacity training centre, we manufactured and supplied a 2250 kVA generator set prepared to operate in parallel with the mains. The genset was designed made-to-measure, and had to also comply with low sound emissions.”

Warwick-based sustainable energy consultancy secures MEIF investment

Warwick-based energy consultancy Utility Stream has obtained a significant investment from the Midlands Engine Investment Fund (MEIF) Equity Finance Fund, managed by Birmingham venture capital firm Midven.

Utility Stream provides companies with simplified and sustainable energy solutions. The new funds will allow the firm to create a number of roles for business consultants and account managers in Warwickshire and nationally.

The firm was founded in 2018, with managing directors Naveed Qayyum and Mark Edwards sharing over 20

years of experience in the energy sector. In the short period of time that Utility Stream has been operating, it has developed a unique offering which provides businesses with a full end-to-end consultancy service which includes bespoke energy solutions - helping businesses save money and reduce their carbon footprint.

Mark Edwards, Director at Utility Stream, says: "Primarily, the investment will enable us to continue to develop our business across a range of markets and sectors. “

RWE completes installation of foundations and export cables at Triton Knoll RWE has taken a huge step towards first power generation in 2021 at Triton Knoll by completing the installation of all 90 turbine foundations.

It has also installed two 50-kilometre long export cables connecting offshore and onshore electrical systems. The successful installation was achieved during one of the project’s most challenging times due to the impact of Covid-19, and has been completed within the planned summer delivery window.

With a commercial operation date expected in the first quarter 2022, Triton Knoll wind farm will have an installed capacity of 857megawatts

(RWE’s pro rata share: 509 MW), capable of supplying green electricity equivalent to the annual demand of over 800,000 UK homes.

Triton Knoll offshore wind farm is located over 32 kilometres off the Lincolnshire coast.

It is jointly owned by RWE (59%), J-Power (25%) and Kansai Electric Power (16%), with RWE leading the wind farm’s construction and long-term operation and maintenance works, on behalf of the project partners. Total planned investment volume amounts to approximately £2 billion.

NEWS OPITO marks strategic shift with launch of new product suite for the renewable energy workforce

PITO, the global skills organisation for the energy industry, has made its first move into the renewable energy industry, with the launch of a new suite of safety and technical training standards, and qualifications, designed to address the skills requirements of a net zero economy.

The launch marks OPITO’s first step into renewables, with focused products that build on its strong heritage in oil and gas, while recognising the need for a flexible workforce equipped to support an integrated, low-carbon energy system.

The initial offering is tailored to the offshore wind sector which, together with solar power, is set to dominate the growth of renewables as a primary energy source over the next 30 years1. Offshore wind is expected to lead to the creation of 27,000 highly skilled roles, in the UK alone, by 2032, with the number of jobs in the sector globally forecast to rise to one million by 2053.

OPITO’s new standards give learners the opportunity to choose from a range of products, designed to equip them with the critical skills needed to work across the various aspects of the sector – including scoping and development, construction, operations and maintenance activities.

The Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) for Renewable Energy standard has been created for those seeking to enter or transition to roles in the renewable energy industry. There are also refresher courses available for personnel already working in the offshore wind sector. This basic survival standard offers a more flexible approach to individual training needs, with the option to choose from limited or full-access courses. The new product range also features crisis management and helideck standards.

Those starting out in their careers have been catered for too, with two SCQFaccredited training qualifications – an introduction to mechanical and electrical engineering, and renewable energy foundation training. These courses can be used by employers that wish to develop their workforce, and are equivalent to learners at apprentice level looking to achieve SQA Level 3 certification.

The launch of these new products supports the strong commitments made by the UK and Scottish Governments to this growing market, while addressing the triple challenge of climate change, energy security and affordability of supply; and encouraging the development of a multi-skilled energy workforce.

All centres providing these products will be subject to OPITO’s established and globally recognised quality assurance process. A further advantage is the integration of certification with Vantage, the oil and gas industry’s central registration system.

This allows operators to track the training and assessment status of their personnel across the oil and gas, and renewable energy industries. The free OPITO TRAIN-R app provides learners with the same status of their certifications.

To support the launch, OPITO has worked with the following training providers: Vulcan Training & Consultancy, Poland; Maersk Training UK Ltd.; Humberside Offshore Training Association (HOTA), Hull; Petrofac, Montrose; Petans, Norwich and FMTC, Netherlands. Actemium Oil and Gas Training, has already received the first approval for delivery of the global renewable energy qualifications.

Estover Power and the 27MWe Kent biomass CHP plant located near Sandwich

The 27MWe Kent biomass CHP plant near Sandwich currently supplies heat and electricity to Discovery Park, one of Europe's leading science and technology parks.

The plant now sources its fuel predominantly from traditionally managed coppiced woodlands, stimulating the local forestry industry and improving traditionally managed forests. The project was financed in August 2016 by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and BWSC with over £160m of finance.

Since 2018, the plants Estover has developed have bought about 700,000 tonnes of virgin wood fuel about 25% of the virgin wood fuel

- about 25% of the virgin wood fuel grown in the UK. Estover’s fuel managers source this from a variety of suppliers, including growers, forestry managers, aggregators and the Forestry Commission.

Biomass plant construction took between 24-36 months, and this typically involves 300-400 people onsite at any one time.

On each project, Estover’s team manages the construction contractors on behalf of the equity owners, helping the project meet delivery and performance targets.

Since being founded in 2010 Estover has financed over £375m of power projects like this one.

Eurosite Power provides CHP for the Ability Group & Hilton Hotels

Att four of its hotels in the UK the Ability Group was keen to install combined heat and power (CHP) technology. It turned to Eurosite Power to make this a reality.

Fully funded by Eurosite Power's Onsite Utility Solution over an extended 30 year contract – the work is now delivering economic, operational and environmental benefits at all four sites.

This arrangement guarantees direct energy cost savings by generating a substantial portion of the required electricity and heat at each of the sites.

Crucially, the CHP systems are owned, operated and maintained by EuroSite Power – thus resulting in zero capital & resource outlay for The Ability Group.

“We liked EuroSite Power’s approach because it required no capital investment and guaranteed us a saving, whatever happens to energy prices in the future,” commented a spokesman at the Ability Group. The technical figures are certainly impressive: forecast electricity generated: 4,359,489 KWH Elec; forecast heat generation: 7.053,156 KWH heat.

NEWS District heating pipework delivered by Brugg to a Royal Castle as part of a Veolia contract

I

n June 2020 Brugg delivered two 40m long sections of flexible preinsulated pipe – the Flexwell FHK200/310 DN150 heating cable - to the district heating network construction site near the Royal Castle in Warsaw, near Kubicki Arcades. The order was part of a key contract placed by Veolia.

Brugg technology was required for part of the district heating line DN150. This had to be a continuous, connection-free line running partly horizontally and then up the steep 60-degree slope of the hill of the Royal Castle, matching the existing heating channel. There was an additional difficulty posed for the district heating engineers they had to change the pipeline direction not only vertically but also horizontally at the same point.

The new section of pipeline was laid with the heating cable ends on top of the castle hill, entering the existing concrete chamber where further heat distribution takes place.

The Flexwell cable was delivered in required lengths 2 x 40.5m on an oversize drum of 4.5m diameter. The product was provided by special delivery, arranged and by the forwarding company Transport Piwiński. The additional difficulty was a necessity of precise maneuvering of a long-base vehicles in the historical area of the Old Town of Warsaw.

The main contractor, PHU Instaleks from Żyrardów moved both sections of the Flexwell cable with the help of a mechanical lift. The Brugg service engineers then installed welded couplings on the cable ends.

Thanks to use of the Flexwell system in a difficult situation the network owner Veolia - was assured of trouble -free pipeline operations for the future. .FLEXWELL district heating cable (DHC) from Brugg is a double-walled, flexible steel casing pipe system. The DHC is a flexible, self-compensating steel casing pipe system. It is continuous and has a monitoring option for use in networks with high temperatures and operating pressures. Honda launches Bluetooth App for generators

Honda Power Equipment has launched a new app designed to make its portable generators easier and more convenient to use.

The Honda My Generator Bluetooth App allows a user to start (electric start models only), stop, and monitor critical operations of a portable Honda generator remotely from a compatible Apple device or Android smartphone through a Bluetooth interface.

Honda Power Equipment said it is launching the new app at this time of the year when many consumers are facing adverse weather conditions.

The app operates within a 75 ft. line of sight, allowing the user to start and stop the generator, monitor a range of information - such as output power, engine operating hours, oil life, estimated run times based on power usage- as well as receive warnings and routine maintenance reminders.

The Honda My Generator Bluetooth

App also allows the user to control multiple, compatible Honda generators from a single mobile device.

On Honda generators which feature electric start - the EM5000, EM6500 and EU7000iS - the app allows for remote starting, stopping and monitoring.

Honda pull start models, such as the EU2200i, require manual startup, but the new app allows for remote stopping and monitoring of the genset.

JS Power provides gensets for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency JS Power has supplied gensets which play a key role in a brandnew, state-of-the-art search and rescue installation commissioned by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

The installation, which is located in Hampshire’s Solent Airport Daedalus, comprises six Medium Earth Orbit Local User Terminal (MEOLUT) domes.

The Installation itself is one of only seven in the world and will provide the Maritime & Coastguard Agency with near-instantaneous detection of distress beacons, as well as rapidly resolved location of the beacons using ‘single burst’ processing.

JS Power provided the necessary equipment fbased on a design brief supplied by the client. The list

includes two generators configured as an N+1, and also DEFRAcompliant bunded fuel tanks.

The new system has been designed to provide unparalleled precision and timing, which will enable the Maritime & Coastguard Agency to respond promptly to any emergency situations.

NEWS Collett delivers blades to Crossdykes wind farm - the first ever Delta 4000 turbines ever delivered to the UK

D

elivery of most components to Muirhall’s 48MW Crossdykes project in Scotland has been completed.The project will feature ten Nordex N133 4.8MW machines 11km north-west of Langholm.

Collett transported components to the Dumfries and Galloway site throughout September and early October, including the 65-metre blades, believed to be the largest ever to be transported on land in the UK, earlier this month.

NORDEX Group was contracted for the installation of ten N133/4.8 turbines at the Muirhall Energy-operated Crossdykes windfarm near Lockerbie.

The construction of the turbines will begin before the end of the year, with Germanheadquartered Nordex providing maintenance and servicing for a 20-year period.

With a rotor sweep of 13,935 square meters and a nominal output of 4.8 megawatts, the N133/4.8 achieves an increase of up to 39 percent in yield compared with the N100/3300. Accordingly, it sets new standards in the cost of energy (COE) at sites characterised by strong winds.

Chris Walker, MD of Muirhall Energy said, “We are delighted to be starting construction on what will be one of the first subsidy-free developments to come online in the UK. That is testament to the work we have done as a company, but also the flexibility shown by all of our partners, such as the Nordex Group, as we finalised our plans for the project.”

Patxi Landa, CSO of the Nordex Group, added: “The wind farm will be operated without financial support from the government. This shows that the production of electricity from wind power using the latest technology at very good sites can compete with conventional sources of energy.”

Upon completion in 2020, it is believed that Crossdykes will be able to supply 45,000 households with clean electricity.

Precision Industries chooses Perkins engines for gensets Precision Industries (PI), a leading manufacturer of diesel generator sets, is a key supplier of power equipment to ADNOC. As part of a recent modernisation programme ADNOC asked PI to play an important role in upgrading the process control systems and power system at its refinery and process plant.

A vital element of the upgrade involved developing a standby power solution to keep the plant operating during a blackout event. This is when the main supply shuts down and an onsite power system is required to restore operations.

ADNOC’s operational team needed a solution to meet local emission standards and operate at extreme temperatures of up to 58°C.

PI explained that to meet the specific needs of the installation, the generator set had to be highly customised; built to a very high-end specification, meet international standards such as Shell DEP and deliver world-class quality.

To maximise the quality of the final installation, PI selected UKbased Perkins as its engine provider. A selling point was Perkins’ application and installation (A&I) support-where Perkins collaborates closely with OEMs to ensure seamless engine integration.

NEWS Power density - some key considerations for hospitals

W

hether it is a storm, a flood or a general blackout, hospitals must be able to sustain power. To futureproof their standby power needs, hospitals often upgrade their standby generator systems. Here Jason Harryman, UK Sales and Business Development Manager for Electric Power at Finning UK & Ireland, exclusive distributor of Cat® generators in the UK and Ireland, explains why a generator’s power density matters to the NHS. During a diesel generator upgrade, as part of a hospital refurbishment or expansion, it can be tough to meet the requirements of the space, particularly if the engine room is small or difficult to access. To achieve a good balance between power output and available space, hospital management teams can opt for generators with a high power density.

Although the generator must be able to cover 100% of hospital power in the case of an outage, futureproofing isn’t as simple as just buying bigger generators to meet extra capacity.

If hospital teams oversize their system by choosing a generator with a higher rating than needed, the units will take up more space and have a higher maintenance and servicing requirement. Larger units also lead to increased capital costs, something which is increasingly hard to justify. At the same time, smaller units may not provide enough power, leaving hospital procurement teams with a tough decision.

Engine manufacturers have been working to decrease the size of their units, while maintaining the same power resilience. This results in generators with higher power density — a measurement for the amount of power a piece of equipment produces for its size. While a standard hospital generator used to offer 2.5MVA standby, convention now is usually above 3.0MVA. One example is the Cat® 3516, which was originally rated at 1650 kVA, but can now achieve over 3,000 kVA, all from a very similar footprint.

Aside from power density, using compact generators means hospitals also benefit from the need for less ancillary equipment and generators that are cheaper to transport, install and maintain.

As an example, Finning has provided Guy’s Hospital in London with three Cat® C175-20 generator sets with an output of 3200ekW, the highest output available from a single high-speed generator set in the UK. The system will go on to provide a combined 9600ekW of reliable, mission critical standby power.

Talking about the project, David Porter, Head of Compliance at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said: “Due to the spatial constraints, we considered three different sizes of engines and appointed Finning, which offered the C175-20, because of its compact size and high power output. The small footprint of the C17520 means that the new units can be housed within the existing generator rooms without any major building modifications.”

To reduce the risk of the power going out, hospitals may think that a more power dense generator means fewer units are required, and therefore fewer points of failure. However, demand for standby power has increased so significantly over the years, numbers have actually increased.

The conclusion? The key to achieving a low cost of ownership is to optimise the generator to match the required needs.

Centrax technology is behind the world's very first industrial scale power-to-X-to-power1 H2 demonstrator turbine

With the HYFLEXPOWER project, a consortium made up of UK-based Centrax, ENGIE Solutions, Siemens Gas and Power, Arttic, DLR and four European universities are implementing a project directly funded by the European Commission.

This has been formed under the Horizon 2020 Framework Program for Research and Innovation (Grant Agreement 884229).

Thanks to Centrax technology the world's very first industrial-scale power-to-X-to-power1 demonstrator with an advanced hydrogen turbine, will be launched at Smurfit Kappa PRF’s site - a company specialised in manufacturing recycled paper - in Saillat-sur-Vienne, France.

The purpose of this project is to prove that hydrogen can be produced and stored from renewable electricity and then added with up to 100%

to the natural gas currently used with combined heat and power plants. For this, an existing Siemens SGT-400 industrial gas turbine will be upgraded to convert stored hydrogen into electricity and thermal energy.

NEWS 149-mile-long undersea electricity cable powers 1m homes with clean energy

I

FA2 is the latest addition to the National Grid’s portfolio of interconnectors.

These giant undersea cables allow the UK to share clean energy with its European neighbours. Interconnexion France-Angleterre 2 (IFA2) is Britain’s latest interconnector, running for 149 miles under the sea and connecting Fareham in Hampshire and Normandy in France. Interconnectors are highvoltage electricity cables which allow nations to share surplus clean energy.

This new interconnector is expected to deliver 1.2% of Britain’s electricity needs – enough to power a million homes with zero carbon energy. By the end of its first year in operation, this interconnector will have helped to prevent 1.2 million tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions – that’s equivalent to planting 50 million trees.

IFA2 is National Grid’s second link to France, following in the footsteps of IFA, which runs from Kent to Calais and was the UK’s first ever interconnector, launched in 1986.

The new 1,000MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable is the result of a shared £700m investment with French partners, RTE. Despite being completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has remained on time and in budget.

By adding to existing interconnectors, IFA2 will play a part in helping the UK to transition to clean energy resources; and collectively they will enable the UK to benefit from clean nuclear power, hydropower and wind power. This means that when the wind doesn’t blow, or the sun doesn’t shine in the UK, the country can import zero-carbon energy from its neighbours.

The UK is committed to reaching net zero by 2050 and decarbonising the energy system will play a key part in helping the nation reach that target. There’s already been significant progress – since 1990, emissions reductions in the power sector have accounted for around half of the UK’s total emissions reduction. Notably, 2019 was the first year which saw zero carbon power outstrip fossil fuels for a full 12 months since the Industrial Revolution.

But, to reach net zero, more needs to be done and interconnectors play a critical role in helping to cut carbon emissions. The three existing interconnectors – IFA, Nemo Link and BritNed – already power the equivalent of 5 million homes with energy and this will increase to 8 million by 2024, when the National Grid plans to have six interconnectors in operation.

A spokesman for National Grid commented: “We anticipate that importing cleaner energy via our interconnectors will help the UK avoid 100 million tonnes of CO2 emissions entering the atmosphere between now and 2030, which is equivalent to taking 2 million cars off the road.

Jenbacher N Oil 40 has been developed to meet the evolving needs of natural gas engine lubrication, providing increased engine uptime and enhanced engine reliability, leading to more power generation and revenue potential. Benefits of the new technology include extended and unique condemning limits for longer drain intervals without compromising protection of critical engine parts and

components. INNIO’s myPlant Asset Performance Management solution can be used to monitor oil consumption, exhaust gas temperature and oil change intervals.

NEWS Biggest offshore wind plant to be built in Scottish Highlands, says Global Energy Group

A

s part of a new £100m programme, the Global Energy Group (GEG) has plans to build what what it describes as the UK’s largest offshore wind fabrication facility in the Scottish Highlands.

Inverness-based GEG has announced plans to developa factory at its Port of Nigg facility located at the entrance to the Cromarty Firth. The project will employ more than 300 people in the area’s supply chain and will take advantage of the 17+ new offshore windfarms likely to be developed Steel towers, jackets and foundations for wind turbines will be produced at the site at Nigg. As well as a training facility, the project will involve building a 376,000 cubic foot steel-rolling hall, capable of producing 90-100 towers a year. Also onsite will be a blast and paint shop and advanced robotics for welding and fabrication processes.

The factory design will integrate cutting-edge technology to maximise operational efficiency, and regional staff historically employed in the oil and gas industry will have the opportunity to be retrained and upskilled at the Nigg Skills Academy to allow them to operate the machinery required to roll these giant structures, reports the company.

Full development of the 1,476ft-long factory means a requirement for further quayside space at the Port of Nigg to accommodate increased shipping movements there.Earlier this year, the Global Energy Group reached agreement with Repsol Sinopec Resources UK Ltd and took over the long-term operation of the Nigg Oil Terminal jetty under a new lease with Crown Estates Scotland which came into effect on the 28th February 2020.

Under the agreed deal, the jetty will be operated as an extension to the Port of Nigg which has already established itself as a leading deep-water port servicing oil and gas, offshore renewables and the wider energy markets.

The additional ultra-deep water berth extends the capability of the port and provides additional flexibility in berthing options during what promises to be a very period of high activity at the port.

Commenting on the deal, Roy MacGregor OBE, Global Energy Group’s Chairman, said: “I am delighted that we have finally concluded the deal and are now in possession of a key asset within the Cromarty Firth which may otherwise have been decommissioned.

“The Nigg Jetty is a valuable addition to our facilities and increases our deep-water quayside capacity.”

Approval for 105.6MW Lethans wind farm in Scotland reports Banks Renewables

Approval has been given for the 105.6MW Lethans Wind Farm located in East Ayrshire in Scotland, reports Banks Renewables.

The deal follows a revision to company proposals which will now feature 22 turbines with tip heights of 220m built at the site, east of New Cumnock.

Although its original plan was first approved in 2018, Banks Renewables chose to redesign the project in order to boost efficiency and cut down the count of turbines from 26 to 22 and alter the layout of the farm.

BR personnel teamed up with renewable energy consultancy and service provider Natural Power for the project. Once fully operational, Lethans Wind Farm will take Banks’ operational wind farm portfolio in Scotland to 300MW and across the UK to 400MW.

Banks Renewables sustainability and external affairs manager Robin Winstanley commented: “This has taken many years of hard work, planning and close consultation with the local community and it is a major milestone to see it over the line.

“As well as being a meaningful advance in Scotland’s green energy agenda, approval for Lethans will also deliver real, deep and longlasting benefits to the local people, the environment and to the economy of East Ayrshire.”

He concludes: “We’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to the planning processes over recent years, particularly those members of the local community who have fully embraced the process. We’re excited to move this project forward and make the many benefits that it will deliver a reality.”

2021 start for new energy-fromwaste plant in Preston, Lancs A site located immediately off junction 31A of the M6 motorway on the Red Scar Industrial Estate, east of Preston, could see the development of a £200 million energy-from-waste facility at Longridge Road.

The energy recovery facility will have the capacity to process up to 395,000 tonnes of residual waste – the waste left over from households and businesses after recycling has taken place – every year and use it as a fuel to generate low carbon energy.

Development company Miller Turner say it will generate enough energy to power every home in Preston.

Miller Turner reports that LREC offers an alternative to landfill and will generate up to 500 jobs. At least 40 of these will be permanent posts at

the plant which is likely to be completed and operational in 2023.

Loadbank test power system for the UK’s Antarctic research base One of the UK’s most remote research stations is using a microturbine to power essential experiments involving the gathering of weather and climate data throughout the dark and freezing Antarctic winter months. Crestchic has supplied load banks to test the efficiency of this key microturbine.

T

he Halley VI Research Station, which is located on the Brunt Ice Shelf in the Antarctic and operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), was previously manned year-round. However, for the last three years, it has needed to be a summer-only station, due to uncertainty over the stability of nearby ice.

With power critical to maintaining observations remotely, BAS opted to install a microturbine specifical ly designed to power the station’s automated instrumentation.

The microturbine runs at 70,000 rpm, 24-hours-a day, generating a constant 9 kilowatts of power - enough to operate about 80% of Halley's normal experiment schedule without human intervention.

The Halley VI research station is located on the 150-metre-thick ice shelf with extreme temperatures which have been known to drop to -56° Celsius.

In such extreme conditions, and with no one onsite to maintain or repair equipment, ensuring that the microturbine is fully tested prior to deployment is an absolutely critical step in the process.

Power continuity and the role of load bank testing To meet this need, BAS chose Crestchic to supply a load bank - a device used to create an electrical load which imitates the operational or ‘real’ load which a mi croturbine would use in normal operational conditions.

The load bank is used to test the system to ensure it is fit for purpose and that it will operate as required.

Dr. Thomas Barningham, the project manager on the Halley Automation Project, explains: “Without doing load testing, we cannot be sure the microturbine and all of its periphery control systems are fit to be deployed in Antarctica.

“Providin g an unmanned power system is critical to maintaining our long term data sets, for example the Dobson photospectrometer, which we use to monitor the Ozone Layer, was forced offline in the winters of 2018 and 2017 because there was no-one present to mind it and no power system. It was the first time we’ve lost data since the 1950s.”

He explains: “ The installation of the microturbine enables us to continue our work

Dr. Barningham continues: “Making long term observations of the environment in the deep field of Antarctica is difficult.

“We are limited by the brief weather windows during the summer months and often have to leave simple low power systems which can collect useful but limited data over the winter months.

He comments: “Having high power automated systems which can run unattended for several months without intervention, such as this, opens up the opportunity for more data heavy, and hence more elucidating forms of instrumentation to be deployed in these remote locations.”

As well as using the load banks to test the efficiency of the microtu rbine, Crestchic has previously supplied Halley VI with a 200KW resistive-only load bank which was used to test and maintain generators at the station during the summer months.

By employing this technology, BAS can ensure that the station does not lose power.

With no connection to the grid, a team of people living on-site, freezing temperatures, and critical scientific data at stake, load banks are critic al to ensuring ongoing power to the station.

Factoring in the operational costs do the numbers add up?

There comes a tipping point where over the long-term, the cost to replace equipment becomes less than the cost to maintain and repair it, explains Aaron Oddy, Sales Engineer, CENTIEL UK. This calculation needs to take into account a number of variables, including the running cost to power an older, less efficient system plus replacement parts.

lients often ask for these evaluations and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculations to be made - and the results can be revealing. The information enables clients to make an informed decision if it is more cost effective to replace certain elements of the system such as batteries, capacitors, fans or to purchase a new solution.

CENTIEL UK recently quoted for multiple standalone UPS systems throughout a c omplex located in the heart of London’s banking district.

There was a mix of systems already in place and some of the legacy UPS were almost 20 years old. The client wanted a clear insight into the cost of replacement versus repair across various locations at the site to see how the numbers added up.

Aaron Oddy commented: “We spent some time drilling down into the details but here are the headlines. We worked on calculations for each individual legacy UPS, we even identified savings on the smaller 30Kva

systems, which I have used as an example in this article.

“We compared costs for both buying and running a brand new PremiumTower TM UPS or keeping the old system running over the next five years.

“The calculations included running costs, repair and maintenance plus cooling.The total cost of repair and running of the legacy 30kVA UPS with its low efficiency was circa £30k over five years.”

He explains: “The purchase of a brandnew standalone UPS, which had increased efficiency of 96.6%, lower running costs, lower anticipated repair and replacement costs over the whole period, turned out to be more than 10% cheaper than trying to keep the legacy system running.

“This is a 10% saving for replacing just one o f the UPS systems on site. So, over five years if all the UPS systems were replaced the overall reduction in costs would be compounded,” Oddy points out.

“Often clients just look at the initial purchase price of a UPS and d on’t factor in the cost savings due to the increased efficiency and lower running costs of new equipment. However, armed with this knowledge, we can support clients in making informed and intelligent decisions on when is best to repair or replace a UPS system,” Oddy explains.

Restoring power at Wellingborough landfill site

When vandals damaged the CHP control panels at EDL’s Wellingborough landfill site, rendering the engines unusable, the timing could not have been worse. One week before Easter 2020, the coronavirus pandemic was sweeping the UK and the country had just been placed into an unprecedented nationwide lockdown. Site managers anticipated a significant period of downtime but thanks to a swift response from gas engine support specialist Gen-C, the upgraded engines were back up and running within just two weeks and are now performing better than ever.

ased in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, the EDL landfill gas site generates 1.5 MW of power per hour, enough for 1,500 homes. It is a crucial power distribution site for the local area, so site engineers were dismayed to discover that vandals had broken in over the weekend before Easter and smashed the CHP control panels, placing the engines out of action.

Even in normal times, getting the two Jenbache r 320 1 MW engines back up and running would have been a challenge as the damaged control systems were no longer available on the market, so fixing or replacing them was not possible. However, the added factor of a global pandemic affecting the supply chain and resulting in millions of workers being furloughed made the situation even trickier.

Despite these concerns, Lee Heath, EDL’s Operations Manager, ca lled Gen-C’s Managing Director James Thompson at 10am on the day the damage was discovered to see whether there was anything he could do. “I had dealt with Gen-C

for a number of years and had always been impressed by their level of customer service,” states Lee. “However, the speed of their response on this occasion was astounding. Sean Kennedy, Gen-C’s Head of Sales, was on site by 1pm to assess the damage and had quoted to replace the panels by the end of the working day.”

James explains: “We could see the predicament that EDL were facing and knew how important it was to get their engines back up and running as quickly as possible.

“As power supply specialists, we are classed as key workers, so we were able to get on site within hours to assess the situation. We recommended upgrading their vandalised pan els to the far superior Motortech open access control panels, which are based on the popular ComAp technology, along with Motortech ignition and knocking control systems.

“However, as this was an unplanned upgrade, it was especially important to keep costs down, so we made sure the new equipment could interface with the engines’

existing Jenbacher parts, including the mixer, throttle and auxiliary compone nts.”

Happy with Gen-C’s quote, and the speed of response, EDL instructed them to begin work as soon as possible. But with lockdown measures and social distancing guidelines now imposed, this was to be an installation unlike any other.

“In a week when most of our competitors were closing premises and furloughing staff, we were figuring out how to complete the project while minimising the chance of our empl oyees, and EDL’s, catching COVID-19,” says James.

“Firstly, with hotels being closed, I rented an oversized house in the local area for our engineers to stay in. It was big enough to zone off separate bedroom, living and bathroom areas for each person in order to minimise social interaction. I then assessed the site and identified clear working zones for each staff member, to reduce the risk of exposure.”

W ith the health and safety of personnel now assured, it was also important to ensure that the supply chain had not been affected by the pandemic.

“Fortunately, we have the capacity to store a lot of parts at our Sheffield headquarters and every item required for the EDL project was in stock. This meant we could begin work asap – in fact, we started the project just three days after I received the initial c all from Lee.” The installation took place without a hitch – the first engine upgrade was completed within two weeks, despite the Easter bank holiday weekend and restrictive COVID-19 working conditions, while the second took just eight days. Gen-C’s engineers removed the vandalised control panels and replaced them with Motortech’s advanced gas engine technology.

Gen-C also upgraded the engines’ ignition and knocking control systems with the latest Motortech technology.

“The difference in performance is like night and day,” confirms Paul Newman, of Newman Electrical Services, the main mechanical contractor for EDL Midlands.

He said: “The engines run much more smoothly and reliably, and the fact that we can monitor and restart them remotely has proved invaluable; especially as fewer personnel have been able to be on site in recent months.”

With both engines running well, Paul and Lee are full of praise for Gen-C’s support during a difficult and unprecedented time: “Gen-C’s speed of response was fantastic, but more than that, their professionalism and knowledge ensured a difficult situation had a positive outcome for us. Their ability to keep costs down was also impressive. 30% energy savings achieved for Exchange Plaza, Edinburgh Exchange Plaza is a prestigious landmark office building located on Lothian Road in the heart of Edinburgh’s financial district. This 100,000 sq ft modern six-storey building is home to large companies that include oil and gas explorer Cairn Energy, law firm Burness Paull, the All Bar One restaurant and bar group, and award-winning craft beer producer, BrewDog. In this building, two companies Greenville and Pump Action - were able to make optimised process control improvements which reduced energy consumption, reports UKPN.

CG, the company responsible for managing the Exchange Plaza building in Edinburgh, decided to look for ways to reduce the energy used by 16 pumps in the building’s HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems.

Having approached Pump Action to carry out the pump assessment, Pump Action contacted Greenville, a Premium Danfoss Drives Partner. Steven Brown, Business Development Manager at Greenvi lle, working in conjunction with Pump Action, assessed the condition of the existing pump systems and provided a report on their efficiency, as well as to suggest improvements.

“Working with Pump Action, we produced detailed energy saving calculations and concluded that the building and its inhabitants would be much better served by the installation of new pumps and new AC Drives”, said Steven. “The existin g installation had old, inefficient pumps with either DOL or

star/delta starters and so they could only run at full speed. Our proposal was to install new efficient pumps along with variable speed drives (VSDs) so that the pump speed could be regulated to match demand. ECG accepted our joint proposal, so we supplied the VSDs to pump specialist Pump Action, who installed them alongside new pumps.”

Colin Rams ay of Pump Action explained: “We were asked by ECG to look at upgrading the pump equipment which was 25 to 30 years old. We selected modern high efficiency pumps to complement the new Danfoss drives.

“The whole refurbishment process took two weeks to complete and there was no disruption to the tenants’ activities. We use Danfoss products a lot, and they are our go-to drives, not least because of the optimi sation feature which makes them easy to set up to give the best performance.”

The drives feature compact construction and are available with power ratings from 1.1kW up to 1.4MW. According to the company they offer an ‘excellent investment with a short payback time in upgrade and refurbishment applications, especially as a wide range of control, I/O and communication options are provided as standard ’.

The new drives at Exchange Plaza have been configured to suit each pump in the system using the AEO (Automatic Energy Optimiser) within the drive functions, which typically reduces running costs by 5% to 15% compared with drives that do not have AEO. Automatic Motor Adaption (AMA) was also performed on the drives at commissioning stage, ensuring the drives and motors are optimally matched. Among other things, AMA takes into account cable inductance and motor winding resistance to fine tune the drive for each individual motor, thereby maximising overall efficiency.

An independent energy report from consultants Hulley & Kirkwood, carried out after the installation of the new pumps and drives, found that energy consumption was reduced by £3,500.00 per annum, from a figure of £11,162.00 before the upgrade w ork was carried out. This is an impressive saving of 31.7%.

Andrew Wilson, the ECG manager who was involved in the project from the very beginning, said: “We look after the Exchange Plaza building and it is our job to keep costs down while ensuring that the tenants continue to enjoy maximum comfort.

Altitude simulation system for engines To fulfill demands for more efficient testing solutions, HORIBA, a global supplier of engineering and test systems, with offices also in Ann Arbor, Mich, USA, has developed an altitude simulation system designed to decrease development & testing timeframes for vehicle development, including engine manufacturers, OEMs and engineering companies, reports UKPN.

he MEDAS system is a compact altitude simulator that supplies the correct atmospheric conditions to reproduce a wide range of environmental scenarios. It is suited for a variety of testing applications, including calibration, durability, and rig-to-rig correlation testing, the company said.

Patented technology inside the MEDAS system is designed to allow accurate, dynamic changes to the simulated atmospher e, as those happening in real world. Additionally, its compact design enables it to move between test cells and it can be used for component, engine and vehicle level testing.

“MEDAS creates a test environment, typically for engine testing, but independent on the specimen under test – so it can also be used for a Genset application,” comments Dr. Javier Gómez, Global Product Manager Thermomanagement, HORIBA .

The MEDAS system increases flexibility by offering a modular design, which can be adjusted for a wide range of different test environments and possible applications.

It allows any worldwide atmospheric condition to be reproduced inside the test cell. For a complete real-life operations (such as emissions correlation), an integration with

The MEDAS system can test comp onents and engines in gensets – and other non-road mobile machinery with engine mass flows even above 5,000 kg/h and can simulate more than 5,000 metres of altitude.

Additional options include temperature and humidity modules for full temperature and humidity conditioning to reproduce real-world conditions, the company said.

T hrough an optional extension, the height simulation system offers a wider adjustable temperature range range from -45 to +50 degrees Celsius. As a result of the new features, users can specify a matching relative humidity of 5 to 95%. Thus, the extended simulation options provide a more detailed engineering environment for current combustion engine concepts as well as performance and emission requirements.

These tests can be carried out on all common test benches.

MEDAS allows users to perform dynamic and highly accurate testing and offers several simulation options for their test benches.

Since the tool can simulate almost any potential altitude condition, it enables the testing of a wide range of motor control parameters, geometries and designs. Large food manufacturer reduces costs with new CHP energy centre A major project to provide an onsite energy centre for one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of savoury food products was completed by BasePower earlier this year, reports UKPN.

T

he site typically employs over 900 people and produces fresh chilled foods ranging from rolls to pastry products for grocery retailers and suppliers.

Operating in the highly-competitive food industry, the client wanted to control energy costs, and improve energy security and sustainability by generating its own energy.

BasePower provided a full turnkey package and, working in conjunction with the client’s engineering team, developed a tri-generation Combined Heat and Power (CHP) energy centre.

By fully understanding the client’s energy requirements BasePower was able to design the system to integrate seamlessly with the site’s existing infrastructure and provide the maximum benefit.

Planning and permitting consents were obtained in the grid constrained rural area. As part of the package, BasePower procured the gas engine, exhaust gas heat recovery

steam boiler, electrical switchgear and transformer and absorption chiller, as well as the complete mechanical and electrical installation to interface with the site’s existing services.

Following switch-on, G99 certification was achieved on 9th December 2019. The waste heat steam boiler and hot water was fully commissioned shortly afterwards.

The 2.7MW CHP is ho used in a noise reducing enclosure to remove the impact on any sensitive nearby receptors.

The client was soon realising significant savings from the electricity and heat being reused throughout the factory. In addition, the heat from the CHP reduces the load on existing steam and hot water boilers, increasing the resilience of the plant.

The second part of the project consisted of adding an absorption c hiller which was commissioned in the second half of 2020.

“BasePower provided a full turnkey package and, working in conjunction with the cl ient’s engineering team, developed a tri-generation CHP energy centre.

BasePower was able to design the system to integrate seamlessly with the site’s existing infrastructure

efficiency; the chilled load increases during the summer months as the hot water load reduces.

The client’s engineering teams can log onto an online monitoring system to view engine load and boiler performance on a real time basis, tracking the energy use of the plant. The BasePower team continue to proactively optimise the system remotely which was beneficial during the travel restrictions of the Covid-19 lockdown.

System benefits include: • A supply of electricity, steam, hot water and chill to the factory • Significantly reduced energy costs, contributing to the client’s bottom line • A more sustainable use of energy; as the same fuel is used to produce bot h electricity and heat • Carbon emissions are reduced by approximately 1,000 tonnes per year due to improved efficiencies (using 2020 marginal emissions factor for electricity).

• Improvement to the client’s long-term energy infrastructure and resilience.

The customer opted to finance the project themselves and BasePower engineered, procured and constructed the scheme on as an EPC contract. BasePower operat es a number of other energy centres in the food and automotive sector on a zero-capex basis, where the customer only pays reduced rates for the heat and power provided.

The Taylor Power crew also didn’t hesitate to invite Perkins factory engineers to the table when they decided they needed to craft a 750-kilowat t standby-power generator to address a massive gap in their offerings.

To help bring the Taylor designers’ vision to life, Perkins expanded the capabilities of the 18L, Perkins® 2806, with increased power density, to now support up to 750kWe output, while also improving the air filtration system to allow service from either side.

This brand new TD750 generator also has a smaller footprint and is competit ive on price. Final reviews are still being done on the new addition to the Taylor Power family, but once it’s officially market-ready, it’ll be capable of powering large office complexes, data centres, hotels, municipalities and medical facilities.

“We’re really excited about this,” Thomas said. “The sales department’s energised, and we have people on the shop floor that don’t normally work in R&D that ar e asking to work on this project. There’s a lot of buzz in the building about it.”

Agriculture is another significant market for Taylor Power, which means there are a whole lot of poultry farms across the country that have generators equipped with Perkins engines.

And a typical chicken farm holds between 36,000-50,000 birds, so if the power fails in the summer and the Taylor Power generator didn’t kick in, the loss could be catastrophic.

“The generators in the agriculture market are protecting the livelihood of farmers,” Thomas pointed out. “In some instances, poultry farmers don’t want anything else. They insist on a Perkins engine.”

Taylor Power is indeed powering people’s lives day after day. One might even say they’re as integral to America as the Statue of Liberty - which just happens to have a Perkins-p owered Taylor Power generator on its grounds at Ellis Island.

Genset for listed building located at Finsbury Circus A listed building in London, 20 Finsbury Circus, has posed many challenges for the owners & occupiers.

Originally being positioned on the roof, the design had changed due to structural issues and a generator was relocated into the basement of the building.This, however, proved no problem for Regency Power who were contracted to provide a genset for backup power.

A

t 20 Finsbury Circus the plant room solution was designed and provided

by Regency Power. The building’s infrastructure currently incorporates an exhaust system solution, including an inbuilt catalytic convertor in the silencers enabling to exhaust fumes to be discharged safely.

The silencer performs the same function for the generator engine as the muffler does for engines in automotive and construction ap plications. Both reduce noise and exhaust emissions produced during combustion.

Current Tier 0 regulations for non-mobile, standby generator applications in the UK sometimes require the use of a catalytic converter, particularly in high density populated areas such as London City.

There are a number of ways to treat the exhaust emissions for safe use in these applications.

For example, a catalytic convert er is an exhaust emission control device which reduces toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction.

Catalytic converters are usually used with internal combustion engines fuelled by either gasoline or diesel - including lean-burn engines. The catalytic convertor is built into the gas silencer making this a very comp act and easy solution to install.

Generally, a basic converter is constructed of a honeycomb grid design which is placed in the exhaust system directly after the exhaust manifold.

This location allows the exhaust gas to be at the maximum temperature needed for proper operation, to achieve the operating temperature as quickly as possible.

converter design with the s ilencer. There are also particulate matter filters which can be used to reduce the soot content of the exhaust.

The interior of the filter is constructed of ceramic material. Exhaust gas passes over the material and soot is collected. Lean burn engines can also employ an additive to further reduce harmful emissions, such as selective catalytic reductions systems (SCR).

The 20 Finsbury Circus site is a clas sic 1920s retained-façade building based near Liverpool Street Station in the centre of London. It is currently in the throes of a full shell & core and CAT ‘A’ refurbishment with supplementary retail at ground floor.

The premises are located in a key London spot; access and egress of materials is a particular difficulty for contractors and a crane is normally required to distribute materials. A hoist was installed throughout the duration of the plant room project, f or examplet.

In mid-2019 a leading international data centre operator was looking to refresh the existing diesel storage and transfer system at one of its flagship facilities in the South of England.

The existing system, consisting of six

generator day-tanks, transfer pipework, pump set an d leak detection infrastructure, was ageing.

The single skin welded steel pipework system showing signs of corrosion and decay. The site’s location close to the coast meant that corrosion resistance of the external components was a key concern, as was environmental safety and system reliability.

technical drawings - PFS Fueltec’s technical sales team visited the site several times to meet face-to-face with the client to understand their exact requirements.

According to PFS Fueltec: “The client benefitted from our vast experience of fuel systems, gained through the work we do across multiple industries. Using a consultative approach we proposed several innovative solutions and products which had not been on the table before our involvement.”

With zero join ts or elbows required and zero leak paths the pipework comes with up to 30 years' warranty. * Stainless steel pipe manifolds for both the day-tank feed and gravity return, with integrated isolation and pressure relief valves * A Class 1 leak detection system which constantly monitors the entire pipe-in-pipe system for leaks and alarms back to the BMS. * Bespoke sized Day Tanks with integrated bulk tank and generator feed and return pipework, actuated control valves and high and low fuel level electronic switches * Fuel Polishing: CC Jensen fuel polishing units to dewater and remove particulates in the diesel day-tanks, ensuring clean fuel to the generators and therefore improving fuel economy and ensuring engines run cleanly and reliably.

Sustainable energy for today: gas engines and ecofriendly power Mallorca's environmental technology park is using an MWM TBG 620 V12K gas engine with an output of 940 kW. Gas from waste fuels the engine to provide a proportion of the energy for the grid. An additional MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas engine was integrated in July 2019 to help modernise the facilities.

allorca's environmental technology park processes more than 730,000 t of waste a year. Apart the infrastructure, the additional waste caused by tourism also represents a challenge for the island with regard to the waste disposal and processing.

Thus, the so-called "zero-waste" model is employed to handle the waste problem: in Mallorca's environmental technology park, all waste of the Balearic island is eit her used as raw material or transformed into energy in recovery plants.

Waste upgrade and recycling for an effective recycling economy The objective of the model is to upgrade all waste in such a way that it can be reused as

material or for energy generation purposes.

Any waste that cannot be utilised is to be eliminated in an eco-friendly manner.

Following a meticulous separation process, any waste th at cannot be recycled is used to generate energy whenever this is possible.

The environmental technology park's recovery plant thus generates enough energy to cover the consumption of about 53,000 households. In a methanisation plant, biogas is gained from the digestion of organic waste. This utilisation process also yields methane gas, which is used as fuel for the production of electrical energy. The dige state, i.e. the esidual material which is left over after the digestion process, is transferred to the composting plants.

MWM TCG 2020 V12 Gas Engine for even more efficient distributed energy generation The generated biogas serves as fuel for an MWM TBG 620 V12K gas engine with an output of 940 kW. Some of the power generated by the engine is fed into the power grid. In order to further expand this sustai nable cycle an additional MWM TCG 2020 V12 gas engine with an output of 1.2 MW and an overall efficiency of 83.9% was integrated at the plant in July 2019 for the purpose of modernising the facilities In addition to the gas engine, a biogas treatment system consisting of a biogas cooler, an active carbon filter, and a fan to achieve the biogas pressure required to fuel the gas engines was ialso installed.

The two MWM gas engines produce the heat required for the digester and more electrical energy than the entire system needs. The excess power is fed into the local power grid and contributes to the island's supply with clean, eco-friendly energy.

Economical energy generation from biogas Energy from biomass can make a significant contribution to sustainable energy supply.

Currently, biogas offers the highest user benefit and the best utilisation of the energy potential of biomass.

An ‘extremely difficult 12 months ahead’, explains AMPS Chairman, Paul Aitken Paul Aitken, Chairman, writes: “As we ease or way through the pandemic - restrictions which challenge our businesses daily the short-term outlook for the economy is not good.

“Additionally, our industry will have to meet with a myriad of demands as companies navigate their way to a greener future for all.”

He explains: “As Chairman I recognise that the next 12 months will be extremely difficult for members, their employees and everone connected with their individual businesses.

“That is why, at AMPS we took steps to protect our interests going forward. As soon as the lockdown started and the potential impact became apparent we made key decisions.”

AMPS has effectively: • Postponed all 2020 events to 2021 • Changed secretariats (£15k saving) • Reviewed all expenditure • Ensured priority work continued.

Right place, right stuff: Gov to put local areas in charge with zoning consultation on heat networks

T

he Association for Decentralised Energy welcomes the decision announced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to consult on a framework for heat network zoning. This comes after the publication of the ADE’s recent report “Heat and Energy Efficiency Zoning: A framework for net zero for new and existing buildings”, which laid out a vision and policy proposals for a wider zoning framework.

The announcement included the following: * BEIS will consult on heat network zoning starting in Spring 2021 * The consultation will explore how a zoning framework could encourage both new and existing developments to connect in designated heat network zones. * The consultation will then inform further policy developments to roll out heat network zones across the country, and explore the role local authorities and stakeholders will play * Heat networks will play a key role in a net zero energy system, and will need to be rolled out at scale if we are to meet our 2050 climate targets (CCC). To make this happen, we need policy that makes low carbon heat an attractive, long-term investment. Introducing zoning for heat networks not only attracts investors, but will help ensure consumers get the most cost-effective low carbon heat for their area.

Caroline Bragg, Head of Policy at the ADE, said: “Zoning is a hallmark policy for the ADE and the announcement to consult on zoning for heat networks aligns really well with our vision of a local, efficient energy system that works for the consumer.

“This framework, if implemented correctly, will go a step further towards streamlining policy for heat decarbonisation and acknowledging that different solutions will be best suited towards different areas. It will, when considered alongside broader policy, create a positive landscape for investment in the heat networks sector, resulting in the creation of green jobs and the bolstering of supply chains.”

The ADE is ready to work with Government to ensure that a framework that zones for heat networks can be broadened to deliver whole system benefits. It is vital that any low carbon heating solution installed, either in a new development or through retrofit, considers the associated potential for the installation of energy efficiency measures. Zoning for heat and energy efficiency provides a lens through which we can consider existing strengths and opportunities in different areas, and the most appropriate, cost effective pathway for them to decarbonise.

Charlotte Owen, Heat Policy Manager at the ADE, said: “We are delighted to see BEIS embrace the potential that zoning for heat networks offers. Heat networks will play a key role in a net zero energy system, providing up to 18% of the country’s heat demand by 2050.

“A clear zoning framework will help to enable local stakeholders to understand the most suitable pathway for decarbonising heat in their area and attract further investment into the sector through identifying area-specific opportunities. We look forward to working with BEIS and our members to shape the framework and ensure that wider opportunities for whole system optimisation such as energy efficiency and system flexibility are considered going forward.”

Related evidence commissioned by Vattenfall and Heat UK found that policy approaches which consider contextual differentiation, such as zoning, could reduce decarbonisation costs by up to £10bn.

The principle of zoning has also received buy-in from the Heat Network Industry Council Smart Liveable Cities lead.

Noah Nkonge, Head of Partnerships at Vattenfall Heat UK and Chair of the Smart Liveable Cities Heat Network Industry Council Working Group, said: “We are excited and wholeheartedly support BEIS’ decision to consult on a heat zoning framework. When implemented well, zoning can remove uncertainty and create confidence for investors, for service providers, for suppliers and for the most important people, the customers. Success or failure in decarbonising heat in the UK by 2050 will depend on the actions and direction we take in the next five years.”

CLC REPORT, SPEARHEADED BY ACE, ARGUES FOR A NEW GREENER REGENERATION INVESTMENT FUND The UK Government’s ambitions for levelling-up, improving social cohesion and accelerating the path to Net Zero could be shifted up a gear if alternative financing capability is made available to support local regeneration, according to construction industry leaders.

The Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has developed the Greener Regeneration Scheme, showing how the Government could empower local authorities, and their development partners, to take the lead in the postCOVID revitalisation of towns and cities.

This research demonstrates how a new approach could accelerate construction jobs for the next three years, stimulate a local-led economic recovery plan, whilst delivering longterm benefits for communities.

The proposal has been developed with the support of Local Authorities, LEPs and private sector developers, seeking to create the optimum environment for aligning public and private sector interests.

To illustrate the tangible outcomes a shift in approach would deliver, the CLC has described the opportunity with tangible case studies. In Stevenage, for example, the fund would deliver 1,860 homes three years earlier than currently planned, a new town centre four years earlier, and 1,250 additional homes delivered six years earlier.

Similarly, the shift in approach would support and enhance local regeneration programmes by bringing projects to market more rapidly, harnessing some of the longer term social outcomes needed in some of the most deprived areas.

Carlo Gavazzi and the WM15 Power Analyser for measurement and analysis Controls and Automation specialist, Carlo Gavazzi has extended its product offering with the WM15, a 96x96 panel mount power analyser for three phase systems (MID versions available) which can be installed into any switchboard to manage and control energy consumption, main electrical variables and harmonic distortion.

The WM15 is easy-to-install due to the intuitive setup and navigation whilst the wizard and wiring check on first startup provides a quick, guided and error free installation and commissioning via the free UCS software.
