Shortly before the US elections which confirmed President Biden’s ascendance to power, several US companies signed agreements with Vietnamese partners to develop LNG-to-power projects in the Southeast Asian country, as part of Washington’s strategy to bolster regional ties and pave the way for more US LNG exports, US equipment supply, and financial backing for energy infrastructure.

Providing a more environmentally-friendly alternative to the currently proposed coal projects in Vietnam’s energy strategy is really at the core of the LNG-fuelled power projects.

ExxonMobil has already expressed an interest in the construction of an LNG terminal and LNG-fired power plants of up to 4,000 MW in Hai Phong,and work is pextected to begin in 2025-30.

General Electric and VinaCapital are already negotiating for the development of the Long An LNG-to-power project in the southern province of Long An. Under the MOU, GE will supply gas turbines and other equipment. VinaCapital is in partnership with the Long An provincial government to develop the project that will have a power generation capacity of 3,000 MW, intended to replace a proposed coal-fired power project cancelled due to environmental concerns. The U.S. Agency for International Development is already backing the launch of the Vietnam Low Emission Energy Program II — a five-year US$36 million program intended to accelerate Vietnam’s clean energy transition.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ (KHI) new type KG-18-T gas engine, equipped with German air management specialist, PBST’s two-stageturbocharging ‘ECOCHARGE’ system, has recorded the world’s highest class power generation efficiency with Japanese standard city gas. Designed for power applications, the KG-18-T’s ECOCHARGE solution consists of a PBST TCX23 and a PBST TCA66 turbocharger which has improved its power-generation efficiency by 1.5% compared to the previous generation of the engine, delivering a world-best class 51.0% in its output class.

DOOSAN WINS CONTRACTS FOR GIMPO CHP PLANT Doosan has signed dual contracts with Korea Western Power Co. for the power block installation and plant construction work required at the Gimpo CHP plant. Doosan won these contracts following the gas turbine supplier agreement that it signed with Korea Western Power Co. in December of last year. The power block contract is valued at about 230 billion won and involves Doosan supplying and installing the steam turbine, generator and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG).

The contract for the plant construction work, which includes installing the transmission lines and industrial water treatment systems.

IN BRIEF HARBIN ELECTRIC & GE CONTRACTED TO BOOST CHINA’S GREATER BAY AREA TRANSITION GE has received an order from Chinese state-owned power utility Guangdong Energy Group for three 9HA.02 gas turbines.

They will go to the Dongguan Ningzhou combined cycle power plant in Guangdong province, in the Greater Bay Area of China. GBA is an agglomeration of cities put forward

by China to strengthen international co-operation and promote lowercarbon, inclusive, co-ordinated and sustainable development.

The project is the first H-class gas turbine planned by local government after policy reform in the Greater Bay Area, focused on the coal-to-gas energy transition.

KEPPEL AND MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES TO JOINTLY EXPLORE HYDROGEN POWERED TRI-GENERATION PLANT Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. and Keppel Data Centres Holding Pte Ltd (Keppel Data Centres) have agreed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly explore the implementation of the hydrogen powered tri-generation plant concept for data centres in Singapore.

Both companies will jointly research how a hydrogen powered tri-generation plantsupported data centre can meet the expanding needs of the digital economy in a safe, reliable and environmentally friendly manner. Mitsubishi believes the use of hydrogen as an energy source can potentially be more environmentally-friendly as the combustion of hydrogen does not produce greenhouse gas emissions. As a tri-generation plant produces heat, power and cooling, a tri-generation plant-supported data centre can be directly powered from the plant itself, reducing its reliance on the national grid, as well as using the chilled water also produced by the plant to cool the data centre’s systems and facilities. Keppel Data Centres and MHI-AP have announced they will be examining the production of hydrogen fuel for the tri-generation plant through the steam methane reforming (SMR) process. By incorporating carbon capture and storage capabilities, both parties are keen to ensure that the process is carbon neutral.

NEDSTACK & CHINA-RICHEM INVOLVED IN PEM FUEL CELL POWER PLANT TECH

NEW ENERGY STORAGE HUB LAUNCHED BY SAFT IN CHINA Saft has opened a new manufacturing hub for energy storage solutions in Zhuhai, China.

The new plant will enable Saft to provide an integrated approach to energy storage worldwide.

This includes every step from initial concept and sizing to system engineering, delivery and grid connection.

As a result, says Saft, operators will be able to keep their total cost of ownership (TCO) to a minimum, while maximising performance.

Saf t reports that this investment marks its transition from being a supplier of batteries to providing complete energy solutions. The investment reinforces Saft’s existing

footprint in Zhuhai as one of three strategic manufacturing hubs – the other two being in Bordeaux, France and Jacksonville, US. The manufacturing capacity of the new 6,600 square metre plant will be around 200 containers per year, equivalent to 480 MWh. The plant is already producing Intensium Max 20 High Energy containers.

These units were launched in 2019 and offer 1.2 MW of power and 2.5 MWh of energy storage. Saft’s megawatt scale Li-ion containerised energy storage systems for grids and renewable energy sources smooth any intermittent generation and ramp rates inherent in renewable power sources.

Nedstack and CHINA-Richem have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Both companies have agreed to collaborate in the full industrialisation of the Nedstack PemGen® stationary fuel cell power system portfolio.

Their idea is to mass produce and deploy PEM fuel cell power plant technology at ‘economic cost levels’ as part of their new partnership.

Initially, the partnership will focus on the Chinese domestic market, however, both companies say they are open towards further expansion in order to maximise their combined impact.

Nedstack’s PemGen® portfolio of PEM Power Plants relies on industrial components to deliver fuel cell systems which can last as long as any conventional

power plant and to offer the best possible price per kilowatt-hour.

IN BRIEF NEW LISTER PETTER GENSET RANGE AVAILABLE Lister Petter has announced the release of a complete range of air- cooled and water-cooled generator sets.

A major factory upgrade means the company can now offer normal open or acoustic sets, plus variants specifically designed for a number of applications and environments.

All sets are assembled with MeccAlte alternators and DSE controls. Lister Petter’s Village Gensets are designed to offer a low-cost solution to provide power to submersible pumps in boreholes with 13.5l fuel tank integral to the engine, with an air-cooled engine and hand start option for minimum maintenance. Long-running gensets allow service intervals of up to 2000 hours, a perfect solution for remote telecom masts.

KOHLER LAUNCHES 150-, 180- AND 200-KW GAS-POWERED GENERATORS - NEW KG GENERATORS FEATURE KOHLER V-8 ENGINE IN A SMALLER, LIGHTER PACKAGE Kohler Co. has launched three new 60Hz and 50Hz gaseous-fuel generator sets providing emergency standby power for industrial, light commercial, and residential applications. The new 150-, 180- and 200-kW generators provide maximum performance in a compact package, a differentiating feature that is frequently requested by specifiers.

The KG150, KG180 and KG200 units are EPA-certified and powered by a newly designed 10.3 liter, V-8 KOHLER engine with the ability to run on natural gas, propane, and dual fuel.

Designed to be a much smaller and lighter engine package, upgrades to the engine include a KOHLER-designed intake manifold, exhaust system and oil thermostat assembly; front end accessory drive with a decoupled fan allowing for different speeds of the fan and water pump; and a one-piece flywheel.

“This project supports the strategic objective to have the same KOHLER-branded engines in all KOHLER generators to support a single platform making it easier for the customer and KOHLER in terms of common parts and efficiency,” said Amy Haese, associate product manager for KOHLER industrial generators. “We also designed a much smaller engine than previous models, as well as shortened the enclosure and skid to reduce overall size and weight for installation flexibility.”

These generators provide users with the flexibility to select the appropriate gas fuel source for a specific application including natural gas (primary) and LP (secondary), and feature a dual fuel option with a patent-pending fuel reset box. This dual fuel system enables the generator to switch automatically from natural gas to LP, and when sensing that LP is low it reverts back to natural gas.

ROLLS-ROYCE TO SUPPLY 15 BERGEN GAS ENGINES TO CONTRACT POWER GROUP FOR AUSTRALIAN MAGNETITE MINE Rolls-Royce and its agent Penske Australia have signed a contract with Contract Power for the delivery of 15 medium speed gas gensets from Rolls-Royce’s Bergen Engines brand to power the Iron Bridge Magnetite Project in Western Australia, an unincorporated joint venture between Fortescue Metals Group subsidiary FMG Iron Bridge and Formosa Steel IB. The gensets are based on the new Rolls-Royce Bergen 20-cylinder B36:45 gas engine, which was introduced to the global market at the end of 2018. The engine platform sets a new standard in power and efficiency with exceptionally low fuel consumption and emissions.

Through the Pilbara Generation Project, the Rolls-Royce Bergen gas gensets will be integrated with a 150 MW solar PV farm and battery storage. The hybrid energy system will be connected to the new transmission network Fortescue is building in the Pilbara, ensuring that the right amount of electricity is supplied in a reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly manner.

Jon Erik Røv, Managing Director of Bergen Engines said: “The new Rolls-Royce Bergen gas engines are designed for different operating modes and can be used to generate base-load, peak power or operate in combined cycles.

The engines are well suited for remote locations and have excellent capability to meet quick and frequent load changes.”

1400 MW GTCC PP TO BE BUILT IN THAILAND BY MITSUBISHI Mitsubishi Power, Ltd., a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has signed a full turnkey contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of a 1400 MW power plant with Hin Kong Power Company Ltd, an independent power producer (IPP) in Thailand.

Mitsubishi Power will provide two M701JAC gas turbines for the natural gasfired turbine combined cycle (GTCC) facility. The contract includes a 25-year Long Term Service Agreement (LTSA) for the project. Under this agreement, Mitsubishi Power will provide maintenance on the power plant’s gas turbines to help ensure reliable operations. Commercial operations will begin in March 2024 and January 2025.

The GTCC facility will be built approximately 100 km west of Bangkok. The owner, Hin Kong Power Company, is a special purpose company (SPC) jointly established

by RATCH Group Public Company Lted and Gulf Energy Development Public

Company Ltd, two major IPPs in Thailand. Power generated from the plant will be sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand.

GTCC power plant is generally regarded as the cleanest and highest efficiency power generation alternative among systems that use fossil fuels.

Compared to conventional coal-fired thermal power plants, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 70%, providing an annual reduction of 7 million tonnes from 1400 MW of generating capacity.

In january 2020 M701JAC gas turbines were supplied to two Thai gas-fired 2650MW combined cycle IPP stations under development on the outskirts of Bangkok.

IN BRIEF A NEW 150MW SIMPLE CYCLE POWER PLANT FOR RANGPUR, BANGLADESH Siemens Energy has won the contract to supply components for a new 150MW simple cycle power plant to be built in Rangpur, in northern Bangladesh.

The components package includes one SGT5-2000E gas turbine, one SGen5-100A-2P generator and a long-term service agreement. This new plant is intended to shape a significant part of the country’s utility expansion in power generation, and towards a more visible higher efficiency and improved fuel usage.

JAPAN WILL BUILD 22 COAL POWER PLANTS DESPITE OPPOSITION Japan now plans to build as many as 22 new coal-burning power plants - one of the dirtiest sources of electricity - at 17 different sites in the next five years, just at a time when the world needs to slash carbon-dioxide emissions to fight global warming.

Together the 22 power plants would emit almost as much carbon-dioxide annually as all the passenger cars sold each year in the US. Japan relies on coal for more than a third of its power generation needs.

While older coal plants will start retiring, eventually reducing overall coal dependency, the country still expects to meet more than a quarter of its electricity needs from coal in 2030. ““The era of coal is ending, but for Japan, it’s proving very difficult to give up an energy source that it has relied on for so long,” comments Yukari Takamura, an expert in climate policy.

NEW 16MW GAS PLANT NEARS COMPLETION IN MYANMAR Cummins Inc. has installed Cummins QSV91G lean-burn gas generators at a new 16MW power plant to provide continuous, reliable power to the city and region of Dawei in Myanmar.

After the growing trade hub and tourism destination in the south of the country was increasingly challenged by inadequate grid infrastructure, the Myanmar government awarded energy provider, Petro & Trans Co, the project to install a 16MW gas-powered power plant. To make the project a reality, Petro & Trans Co selected Cummins DKSH Myanmar (CDM), a Cummins local distributor partner, to support it with the development and execution of the project.

Despite the tight project schedules, CDM supplied eight Cummins 2000kW QSV91G lean burn gas generators, as well as providing ongoing support throughout the duration of the project - from the equipment deployment right up to the installation phase in Myamar.

To complete the generators’ installation, standard controls were embedded within each generator model to support with monitoring the generators’ performance.

Additionally, CDM provided support for the design, installation and commissioning of all Balance of Plant (BoP) items, such as radiators, gas trains and exhaust silencers, to ensure the gas generators maintain a reliable performance no matter the site’s weather conditions.

The 16MW power plant was built in two phases with the plant build and installation phase starting in January 2020 and the first 8MW being installed within five months. The additional 8MW are scheduled for commissioning in 2020.

CHINA’S STATE GRID TO INTEGRATE LARGE-SCALE RENEWABLES

The links will help in integrating hydro, wind and solar power generation, whilst reducing CO2 emissions.

World’s most powerful transmission links The transmission links will be among the world’s most powerful. Each link will transport up to 8,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity – individually enough power to meet the needs of around eight million people in China(1).

The 1,700-kilometrE Yazhong-Nanchang link is part of China’s West-East Electricity Transmission initiative. It helps the hydro-resource-rich Sichuan Province, Southwest China, to transmit green energy to the load centrE of Jiangxi Province in East China. Once complete, the project is expected to reduce approximately 16 million tons of coal consumption and 40 million tons of CO2 every year.

The 1,100-kilometre Shaanbei-Wuhan link marks an important step for SGCC in developing global UHVDC systems standards. And the 1,500-kilometre Qinghai-Henan project is a UHV channel specially designed for the transmission of clean energy, including solar and wind power.

TCG 2020 V16 GAS ENGINE PRODUCES POWER AND COOLING ENERGY FOR ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PRODUCERS

T

he Spanish food enterprise La Unión Corp. sells fruits and vegetables and is considered to be the world’s leading supplier of cucumbers. The company has 26 operating centres and about 1,500 employees.

Every year, La Unión Corp. supplies the markets with more than 400,000 t of fruit and vegetable products, about 70 percent of which are distributed to the European markets.

This year, the company’s trigeneration (power, heat, cold) plant was upgraded with a stronger MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas engine in order optimise the cooling processes for higher capacities and to cut energy costs.

Previous MWM TCG 2020 Gas Engine in Use Since 2012 Back in 2012, La Unión Corp. implemented an MWM trigeneration solution with an absorption chiller in order to cool the stored products effectively.

The MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas engine installed for this purpose produced about 1,500 kW of power, and the ammonia absorption chiller generated 820 kW of cold at -3°C. The generated cold was transferred to the connected cooling chambers for cooling purposes. The absorption chiller, whose heat demand was covered by the heat generated by the engine exhaust gas, cooled a glycol/ water mixture to -3°C. In this way, the combined engine absorption chiller produced 820 kW of cold throughout most of the year.

Of the electrical energy generated by the MWM gas engine, about 12 GWh of power were exported to the public grid every year, an amount sufficient to cover the power consumption of about 12,000 people.

Even More Performance with New MWM TCG 2020 V16 Gas Engine In view of the significant energy savings already achieved with the MWM trigeneration system installed back in 2012, La Unión decided to modernise the plant with another MWM gas engine.

After some 70,000 operating hours, the old engine was replaced with a powerful MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas engine, has an electrical efficiency of 43.2 percent and supplies 1,543 kW of heat energy to the ammonia absorption chiller. The total efficiency of the gas engine is about 87.6 per cent. The new engine has optimised the temperature of the charge air cooling circuit, thereby improving the performance of the gas engine during the summer months and increasing the plant’s yearly electrical energy production.

CHP Plant Ready to Use in Only Two Weeks To minimise the downtime of the plant, the MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas engine was delivered and commissioned within only two weeks.

The trigeneration plant with its new engine went live on October 9, 2020, reliably supplying La Unión Corp. with power and cold for product cooling purposes.

Cogeneration and Trigeneration Enable Energy Savings Compared to the separate generation of electrical energy and heat, cogeneration and trigeneration plants make much better use of the primary energy.

The TWINGENS fuel system consists of a double wall metal fuel tank which serves both gensets.

Quick-release fuel couplings allow for the simple connection of an external fuel supply and a double leak detection systems offers a high degree of protection.

There is a command and control panel - a single automatic synchronising control panel to run one or

both gensets according to power demand.

The 30-foot High Cube is said to offer high structural resistance, ISO lifting hooks (CSC Safety Approval), double seal gaskets, a roof access ladder & roof security anchorage points and an internal canopy lighting system with manual switch for easy operation, even with low ambient light conditions.

The Twingen is equipped with a special lifting system. The special lifting system with hydraulic pistons guarantees ease and safety of transport with no need for a Hiab lorry or onsite crane to off load and position the unit, says Pramac.

Volvo manufactures the Model TWD1643GE water-cooled engine which also features 6 in-line cylinders (displacement 16120 cm³).

Aspiration is turbocharged; there is an electric fan and an electronic Speed governor. Lube oil consumption @ PRP (max) is at 0.1%. Coolant capacity is 60L and the electric circuit is 24V. The engine and block features an optimised cast iron cylinder block with optimum distribution of forces and wet, replaceable cylinder liners. The design offers crankshaft induction hardened bearing surfaces and fillets with seven bearings for moderate load on main and high-end bearings.

Keystone top compression rings provide long service life, as do the replaceable valve guides and valve seats and tapered connecting rods for an increased piston lifetime. There is an overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder, hot parts protection with metal grids and heavy-duty air filters.

The fuel system offers electronic unit injectors and a fuel prefilter with water separator and watering-fuel indicator / alarm, a fine fuel filter with manual feed pump and fuel pressure switch, plus a lubrication system.

The design provides a full flow oil cooler, a full flow disposable spin-on oil filter, for extra high filtration, and a gear type lubricating oil pump, gear driven by the transmission. The integrated cooling system provides efficient cooling with accurate coolant control through a water distribution duct in the cylinder block. POWER BLOCK INSTALLATION AND PLANT CONSTRUCTION WORK AT THE GIMPO CHP PLANT, SOUTH KOREA

D

oosan has signed dual contracts with Korea Western Power Co. for the power block installation and plant construction work required at the Gimpo CHP plant.

Doosan won these contracts following the gas turbine supplier agreement that it signed with Korea Western Power Co. in December 2019.

The power block contract is valued at about 230 billion won and involves Doosan supplying and installing the steam turbine, generator and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The contract for the plant construction work, which includes installing the transmission lines and industrial water treatment systems for the power plant, is valued at approximately 130 billion won. The Gimpo CHP plant, which is located in the Gyeonggi province, is scheduled to be built by the first half of 2023.

The 500 MW LNG-based plant will be supplying district heat and electricity in the region.

Doosan will be deploying Korea’s first locally manufactured gas turbine, which it started developing in 2013 as a government-backed project and for which final assembly was completed last September.

“According to the recently released 9th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply & Demand, … Korea’s natural gas market will grow explosively from the current market size of 41.3 GW in 2020 to 60.6 GW by 2034” commented Hongook Park, CEO of Doosan Heavy’s Power Service Business Group.

He added, “Given that a huge market growth is expected, we aim to further promote our company’s growth by leveraging our industryacademia-research alliances to effectively develop a Korean standard gas-fired combined cycle power plant model.”

The Gimpo CHP Plant has a plan to use gas turbines to initially produce electricity and then the waste heat will be used to activate the steam turbine to once more produce and supply electricity and thermal energy.

The power block at Gimpo refers to the electricity generating section and is comprised of the power plant’s main components, such as the turbine and generator. The power block contract that Doosan won is valued at about 230 billion won and involves Doosan supplying and installing the components which form a power block, such as the steam turbine, generator and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The contract for the plant construction work, which involves installing components like the transmission lines and industrial water treatment systems for the power plant, is valued at approximately 130 billion won.

The 500MW LNG-based power plant will be supplying heat and electricity to the nearby regions.

Doosan is a member of the “Task Force for Development of Korean Standard Gas-Fired Combined Cycle Power Plant,” which was launched by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in February 2020.

The task force is composed of players from both the private and public sectors, including companies from Korea’s gas turbine industry, such as Sung-il Turbine P&S and Korea LostWax, Korea’s high-ranking universities, such as Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Inha University, five companies from the power generation sector, as well as the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP).

As the task force aims at innovating the LNG-based power generation sector, the task force is working on developing a standard LNG-fired combined cycle power plant, devising plans to ensure the supply of such power facilities and seeking to promote the growth of Korea’s gas turbine industry. www.doosan.com

awasaki Heavy Industries’ (KHI) new type KG-18-T gas engine, equipped with German air management specialist, PBST’s two-stage-turbocharging ‘ECOCHARGE’ system, has recorded the world’s highest class power generation efficiency with Japanese standard city gas.

Designed for power generation applications, the KG-18-T’s ECOCHARGE solution consists of 1 × PBST TCX23 and 1 × PBST TCA66 turbochargers. According to the manufacturer the technology has improved ipower-generation efficiency by 1.5% compared to the previous generation of the engine, delivering a world-best class 51.0% in its output class.

KHI notes that the engine and turbochargers have passed a durability test and are now ready for serial production. The turbochargers themselves were inspected after the durability test with KHI reporting their condition as very good.

The ECOCHARGE principle optimally combines a low-pressure turbocharger – usually a TCT, TCA or TCR – with a high-pressure stage for which the newly-developed TCX series was designed.

PBST ECOCHARGE offers increased turbocharging efficiencies, in comparison to single-stage turbochargers.

This is mainly related to the intercooler – positioned between the low-pressure-stage and highpressure-stage turbochargers – which

significantly reduces the energy required to compress the intake air to high pressure.

The resulting, higher efficiencies have an instantaneous impact on the engine by advantageously increasing the air pressure over the cylinder during the scavenging process.

Additionally, greater charged pressure by two-stage turbochargers foster the reduction of NOx emissions through the Miller cycle, while the improved scavenging efficiencies provided by the ECOCHARGE system make the engine more fuel efficient.

The higher power-density generated by the ECOCHARGE technology presents the opportunity to choose between significantly boosting an engine’s power output or reducing engine size, all the while maintaining engine performance.

The ECOCHARGE system’s increased efficiencies and higher cylinder rating facilitate the use of a smaller engine with the same power output of a larger unit that employs traditional, single-stage turbocharging.

KHI’s senior manager four-stroke engine department and head of design department, Mr. Sakai, said: “The new KG-18-T gas engine raises high expectations. This engine is the latest and most-efficient addition to the ‘Kawasaki Green Gas Engine’ series.

T

he last twelve months have seen ports throughout Asia increase their already dominant share of the global market, with Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia likely to see an increase in trade resulting from a postCoronavirus move out of China.

However, with market uncertainty prevalent across many industries in the post-pandemic world, many ports are opting to meet fluctuating demand by employing stand-alone power generators as a temporary measure.

While this solution allows the port to increase crane capacity quickly, it comes with the downside of producing ‘regenerative power’. Paul Brickman from Crestchic Loadbanks explores the issue and how to avoid it.

The container shipping industry is a fast-paced and competitive, with the speed of throughput ultimately impacting productivity and profitability for both the port and those reliant on its services.

However, while ports throughout Asia are continuing to grow, power infrastructure can’t always increase in-line with requirements, and access to the grid is not always possible, making diesel generators a viable solution.

A crucial piece of equipment in any busy port, cranes are used to load, haul and move heavy containers around the site. The constant movement and huge power requirements of these giant pieces of equipment mean that they produce

rapidly changing load profiles on the local power supply network, from high demand, through low demand and often the unwelcome regenerative return-load effect.

What is regenerative power?

Generally, in crane applications, a variable frequency drive controls the motor by supplying it with energy, which then powers the crane to lift its load. When the crane lowers the load, the energy flow can reverse, going back through the motor and into the drive. In most grid-connected situations, this regenerative/reverse power will be absorbed by the grid without too many issues. However, when connected a stand-alone power source such as a generator, this reverse power can have a catastrophic effect on the asset.

If this regenerative power is significant, the energy will return to the initial power source causing energy flow into the drive from the motor, motorising the alternator and making it turn in the opposite direction.

This reversal can twist the shaft and cause alignment problems, causing irreversible damage to the generator alternator and engine and resulting in immediate and costly downtime.

The reverse power can also make the voltage swell, resulting in an unstable system and potentially causing damage to other critical loads.

The most practical solution for dealing with high levels of regenerative power is to pair the generator with

a correctly rated resistive load bank, which can effectively absorb and dissipate any excess power and avoid damage to both the generator and the equipment it is powering.

The majority of load bank applications use a traditional electro-mechanical contactor - essentially a switching device that opens or closes a contact, allowing electricity to be switched fully on and fully off to meet the needs of the application.

Regenerative load applications often have a constant in/out load - where speed and repeatability are key to efficient operation.

Crestchic’s research and development team has developed a way to apply the technology in steps, providing faster switching times and a longer service life. As well as being less prone to wear, interference, “noise” or vibration from other devices this technology also offers improved voltage stability when the load is increased.

The benefits of employing load bank technology in these applications extend beyond the issue of reverse power. Load banks also play a crucial role in overcoming the issue of light loading. By their very nature, cranes create a short and intense power draw as they lift their load, rather than a continuous and stable demand. This type of operation is far from ideal for a generator, making regular testing even more important. As with any other type of engine, a robust and proactive approach to testing and maintenance of gensets is crucial to their effective operation. Using a load bank to test electrics, lubrication, cooling and fuel systems at full load can minimise the likelihood of unscheduled breakdowns and outages. www.crestchicloadbanks.com
