Large subsidies for biomass in recent years have led Japan to import considerable amounts of wood pellets from Vietnam and Canada for biomass energy plants. Two pellet giants, Drax and Enviva, are now looking at market growth opportunities in Japan..

South Korea imports most of its biomass pellets from Vietnamese acacia plantations, which environmentalists fear may eventually pressure natural forests. South Korea wants to grow its native production sixfold, including logging areas with high conservation value.

Vietnam may soon follow Japan and South Korea’s path as it phases out coal, and experts fear all this could ut pressure on Southeast Asian forests which are already among the most endangered in the world.

Both nations import palm kernel shells, a byproduct of palm oil production. A smaller percentage of both countries’ biomass fuel, including wood chips, is sourced domestically.

Wood pellet demand in Japan and South Korea is expected to match that of the UK and European Union by 2027. The EU currently supplies 60% of its supposedly ‘renewable energy’ through biomass.

Although Asian woody biomass sourcing is just one production demand being made on the world’s forestry industry (wood for pulp, paper and construction are others), experts warn that a surge in biomass-for-energy production could lead to increased deforestation. All this for a fuel which, no matter what the carbon accounting rules say, emits higher levels of CO2 at the smokestack than even coal and large amounts of particulate air pollution. In 2021, Japan also sourced 4.3 million metric tons of oil palm shells from Malaysia and Indonesia. Oil palm plantations have also been blamed for massive deforestation across Southeast Asia. And so the cycle continues.

CARBON EMISSIONS IN CHINA WILL HIT A RECORD HIGH FOR 2023 REPORTS WESTERN ENERGY THINK-TANK Experts predict that China’s carbon emissions will hit a new record in 2023 as a reflection of an economic rebound. A rapid expansion in green energy, however, will enable its emissions to peak soon, a global energy think tank has said.

China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gas, saw its carbon dioxide emissions rise 4% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2022, reaching more than 3 billion tonnes, according to a new report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) for Carbon Brief. This is the highest first-quarter number on record.

The increase was driven by an economic rebound after the end of China’s zero-Covid policy, economic stimulus measures and weak hydro generation due to an ongoing drought.

“Looking at the rest of the year, the government’s focus on economic growth means that China’s emissions are likely to reach an all-time high in 2023, topping the previous peak in 2021,” comments Lauri Myllyvirta and Qi Qin, analysts at CREA. However, the emissions could peak soon, as China has accelerated its clean energy push and installed record amounts of solar and wind power capacity.

THAILAND JOINS ASEAN BATTERY INITIATIVE TO BOOST ECONOMY Thailand has partnered with five technology and EV organisations in Asean to jointly study and develop EV battery technology in a fresh move to strengthen the growing industry in the region.

The partnership would also support Asean’s economy under its sustainable development concept, said Pimpa Limthongkul, president of the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (Testa).

Malaysia will lift a ban on exports of renewable energy as part of efforts to develop its clean power industry and boost generation from non-fossil fuel sources, said its economy minister this month.

The South-east Asian country, which currently generates just over one per cent of its electricity annually from renewable sources, banned its exports in Oct 2021 in the hope of developing the local industry.

Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said reversing the ban will help firms build renewable power generation capacity on a larger scale and take advantage of high demand from neighbouring Singapore.

“The creation of an electricity

market system to implement cross-border renewable energy trade will put Malaysia ahead as a regional renewable energy hub,” Minister Ramil said in a statement.

Malaysia has pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions dramatically by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

The International Renewable Energy Agency has said that Malaysia will need to double its investments in renewable power capacity, infrastructure and energy efficiency to at least US$375 billion in order to achieve that ambitious target.

The Minister said the government aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy supply to 70 per cent of its total capacity by 2050.

VIETNAM WARNS OF HEAT WAVE Vietnam’s state electricity company has warned that the national power system will come under strain in June/ July due to anticipated heatwaves, days after the country recorded its highest ever temperature.

The temperatures surpassed 44 degrees Celsius (111 degrees Fahrenheit) in central Vietnam over the weekend, according to national forecasters, breaking a previous high set in 2019.

State utility EVN said in a statement that demand for electricity in the next three months, as temperatures peak in northern Vietnam, could outstrip supply.

It also warned of low water levels that could have a severe impact on the country’s hydroelectric dams.

CAMBODIA TAKES STEPS TO IMPROVE POWER SUPPLY TO THE NATIONAL GRID AND REDUCE CO2 EMISSIONS The government of Cambodia has approved five renewable power projects totalling 520 MW, as part of an initiative to increase power supply to the Cambodian national grid and reduce CO2 emissions.

One of the five projects is a combination of the 70 MW Stung Russey Chrum Kandal hydropower project and the 100 MW Stung Veay Thmar Kambot hydropower project in the Koh Kong province (south-western Cambodia).

The other four projects are solar parks, comprising a 150 MW project in Pursat province (east), an 80 MW project in the Prey Veng province (southwest), a 60 MW project in the Kampong Chhnang province (centre) and a 60 MW project in the Svay Rieng province (south-west).

Through its “Power Development Plan 2022-2040” (PDP), In December 2022 Cambodia, announced that the country is seeking to achieve 3,155 MW of solar capacity and 3,000 MW of hydropower capacity by 2040.

This represents nearly an eightfold increase in solar capacity and more than a twofold increase for hydro capacity. The PDP also sets goals for 2030, with solar capacity increasing from 357 MW at the end of 2021 (around 12% of the country’s capacity in 2021 and about 430 MW in 2022) to 1,000 MW and hydropower capacity rising from 1,330 MW in late 2021 (44% of the capacity) to 1,560 MW in 2030. The PDP also reiterated that Cambodia will be carbon neutral by 2050.

SIX FLOATING SOLAR CONTRACTS HAVE JUST BEEN AWARDED BY THE PDOE

The Philippines’ Department of Energy has issued six solar energy operating contracts to Suna Asia Energy and its partner Blueleaf Energy to develop a total of 610.5MW of large-scale floating solar projects.

The department said the solar facilities will be located on the water surface of the Laguna Lake which covers the cities of Calamba, Sta. Rosa and Cabuya and the towns of Bay and Victoria.

The contacts have a 25-year operating period each and the DOE has so far awarded a total of 237 solar energy contracts with an installed capacity of 1,282MW and a potential capacity of 21,452MW. “Floating solar is a rather new [renewable energy] option, but it has huge potential globally,” says Thomas Reindl, deputy chief executive of the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore (Seris).

Covering just 10% of all man-made reservoirs in the world with floating solar would result in an installed capacity of 20 Terawatts (TW) – 20 times more than the global solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity today, according to an analysis by Seris.

The rise of floating solar technology is among the latest trends in the revolutionary expansion of solar PV electricity in recent years. Globally, solar PV capacity has increased almost 12-fold in the past decade, from 72GW in 2011 to 843GW in 2021.

$18BN HYDROELECTRIC SCHEME TO BREAK GROUND IN BORNEO

Indonesian power company Kayan Hydro Energy (KHE) has begun work on a 9GW hydroelectric complex in Borneo.

The company has partnered with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation to help develop the $17.8bn programme.

KHE is a joint venture between Malaysian stateowned utility Sarawak Energy and Kayan Patria Pratama Group.

The aim is to build five dams ranging from 90 to 160m

high, each with up to six turbines, on a remote site on the Kayan River in North Kalimantan Province.

Current projections indicate that a 900MW plant will be in full commercial operation operation by 2026. The last dam is due to be completed by 2035.

The work will be carried out by the Power Construction Corp of China, a subsidiary of PowerChina.

BATTERY STORAGE FOR RENEWABLES WILL AID JAPAN’S NATIONAL GRID Opening up Japan’s power grids to energy storage systems operated by other companies will be key to broader adoption of renewable energy, says Japan’s government.

The government has already taken steps to subsidize up to half the cost of battery storage systems, drawing from a 13 billion yen (US$114 million) in funding, to make them competitive with other types of energy storage.

Large-scale battery storage is essential for stabilizing the fluctuating supply of electricity from such renewable sources as solar and wind, and more independent players are expected to enter the field as demand rises. Japan already requires grid operators to allow other companies to connect power generation equipment to their transmission networks. The lack of a similar provision for batteries had raised concern among companies considering forays into the business that utilities would block their plans.

Japan wants to lower the cost of installing grid batteries to 23,000 yen ($200) per kilowatt-hour -- on a par with pumped hydroelectric storage, which involves moving water between reservoirs at different elevations to store and release energy.

Tesla Japan already cut the price of its storage systems to around $440 per kilowatt-hour, including construction expenses. Covering half of this through subsidies would bring the final cost close to Japan’s target.

IN BRIEF PNG SEEKS TO BRING POWER TO 70% OF ITS HOUSEHOLDS

JOINT VENTURE ENERGY PROJECT WILL FOCUS ON DEVELOPING WIND FARMS IN SOUTH KOREA USING KYUSHU ISLAND AS ITS MODEL Japanese renewable energy developer Shizen International has formed a joint venture (JV) to develop offshore windfarms and other green energy projects in South Korea. Shizen International, part of Shizen Energy Group, formed the JV with Inmark Asset Management and Dohwa Engineering Co Ltd. The JV will be called Inmark Jayeon Energy Co Ltd. Jayeon means ‘natural’ in Korean. The new JV will focus on renewable energy projects including energy storage, onshore renewables and offshore wind. Shizen is already developing offshore wind projects in Japan, including around Kyushu island.

The joint venture has identified 2.0 GW of renewable energy generation project opportunities and plans to make its first investment in a project of approximately 100 MW by the end of this year.

Kyushu Offshore Wind Farm is a key 1,000MW offshore wind power project. It is planned in Sea of Japan (East Sea), Japan. According to GlobalData, who tracks and profiles over 170,000 power plants worldwide, the project is currently at the announced stage. It will be developed in a single phase.

Tests are underway or scheduled at sites in Fukuoka and Nagasaki, and estimates place the potential for wind power generation in Kyushu, where offshore winds are favorable, at 17 times the current output of Kyushu Electric Power. The Ministry of the Environment will begin one test off the coast of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki, where it has installed 22-metre floating wind turbine that can produce up to 100 kW of power. Kyushu University is conducting another trial in Hakata Bay. It plans to expand a floating platform it equipped with solar panels and its originally-developed wind-lens turbines in late 2011 in an effort to develop a floating energy farm. Given the depth of Japan’s surrounding waters, the development of offshore wind power technologies could be the key to dramatically expanding the use of renewable energy in Japan. www.wipmagazines.com www.powermediagroup.co.uk

Papua New Guinea has set a target for 70% of its households with access to electricity by 2030 and the new ‘Small Power Systems’ programme sets the foundation to achieving this target.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) calls for “affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” by 2030.

UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Dirk Wagener said: “Cheaper, cleaner energy for more people improves livelihoods and protects vulnerable communities and fragile ecosystems from the impacts of global warming and climate change. We take this opportunity to thank NEA for continuing the support that was initially provided by the Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) in the development of the Papua New Guinea Regulation for Small Power Systems. A first of its kind for the country.”

The Regulation was developed under the UNDP-managed ‘Facilitating Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Applications for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Project’.

The Regulation provides for private and public investments in energy service products including power systems of less than one megawatt (< 1 MW). It allows for the involvement of communities irrespective of the business models to be used.

US$32BN ENERGY SPEND BY TAIWAN Taiwan is planning a massive clean energy spending spree through 2030 to redouble climate efforts after government officials said they will likely miss 2025 targets.

For Taiwan, which imports 98% of its energy, offshore wind is one way to demonstrate its clean energy committments. Wind turbines are also crucial to strengthening national energy security.

Taiwan’s wind turbine projects are expected to generate about US$32.6 billion in investments by 2025, Lee Chun-li, deputy director-general of Taiwan’s Bureau of Energy,

INDONESIA PLEDGES TO GIVE UP FOSSIL FUELS - BUT THE TOTAL COST IS PUT AT US$2.4 TRILLION Indonesia has agreed to five schemes with international stakeholders designed to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

While the deals aim to turn one of the largest coal-producing countries toward its vast greener energy sources, experts warn that financial, policy, infrastructure and other challenges need to be overcome too.

Indonesia’s energy transition is “very unique” because of high economic growth, geography, population centers and clean energy potential, said David Elzinga, a principal energy specialist at the Asian Development Bank.

Despite Indonesia’s energy potential from solar, hydropower, geothermal, wind and other sources, only some 12% of them are tapped, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. Nearly all energy demand is met by fossil fuels, with 60% coming from highly-polluting coal.

In 2021, Indonesia’s energy sector emissions were around 600 million tons of carbon dioxide, the world’s ninth highest, according to the International Energy Agency. And population and economic growth are expected to triple the country’s energy consumption by 2050.

Indonesian officials have signalled they’ve started the shift: They have announced new regulations around solar, set a goal to raise the market share of electric vehicles in Indonesia to 25% of total vehicle sales by 2030 and have deployed charging stations. But experts warn Indonesia is lagging behind its Southeast Asian peers.

Indonesia aims to reach net zero emissions from the power sector by 2050, bringing forward its target by a decade, and reach a peak in those emissions by 2030. It is increasing its target for renewable energy to make up over a third of all power generation by 2030, which would mean doubling the pace of current deployment.

Financing, however, remains an obstacle, comments Elrika Hamdi, an Indonesia-based energy finance analyst at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. By one estimate, Indonesia will need up to $2.4 trillion in cumulative investment across the energy system by 2050.

MYAMAR FACES CRIPPLING BLACKOUTS AS SUMMER TEMPERATURES RISE Power blackouts have expanded across Myamar, affecting even the commercial hubs of Yangon and Mandalay, leaving the population suffering in the record temperatures.

Myanmar has the lowest electrification rate in Southeast Asia with only 50 percent of households connected to the public grid, according to the World Bank.

According to a report by the NLD government in January 2021, 40 percent of Myanmar’s electricity is generated by hydropower, 14 percent by solar power plants, 34 percent from domestic natural gas, and 11 percent from LNG (natural gas).

Up until 2021, the country generated about 3,700 MW daily and Yangon consumed about half of that amount. However, daily power generation declined from 3,711 MW in October 2021 to 2,665 MW in March 2022.

Since the last military coup LNG power plants producing about 750 MW have been suspended, with rising gas prices cited as the reason.

The power plants were supplied by an LNG ship owned by Hong Kongbased CNTIC V Power, which left Myanmar permanently in March 2023.

The state-owned Yangon Electrical Supply Corporation (YESC) said in April that production capacity of large hydropower plants in the national power system has fallen in line with dry, summer conditions, resulting in widespread electricity shortages across the country.

ASEAN MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO FORM A JOINT SUPERGRID

The success of a recent project through which Singapore imports renewable energy from Laos through Thailand and Malaysia, demonstrates that multilateral power trading in the region works.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has this month called on ASEAN to continue working towards a joint power grid.

A regional power grid will strengthen energy security and resilience in member states, and advance regional decarbonisation, Mr Lee

argues.

The Lao PDR-ThailandMalaysia-Singapore project shows that “multilateral power trading in the region is feasible”, said Mr Lee during his intervention at the plenary session of the 42nd ASEAN summit in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia.

Singapore has been accessing renewable energy from Laos through Thailand and Malaysia since June 2022.

More than 170,000 megawatt hours of electricity have already been imported to Singapore from Lao PDR.

CELEBRATING 1,000 MW INVOLVING THE INSTALLATION OF 15 TCG 2032 V16 GAS GENSETS

o honour the work and installed total output in Bangladesh by MWM distributor Kaltimex Energy Bangladesh (Pvt.) Ltd., Caterpillar Energy Solutions invited the representatives of Kaltimex Energy to Mannheim.

The celebration of the successful cooperation was also accompanied by a renewal of the distributor agreement.

10-MW Project in Chittagong Laid Foundation for Partnership The foundation for the successful long-standing co-operation between Caterpillar Energy Solutions and Kaltimex Energy had been laid with a 10MW project in Chittagong back in 2000 which never materialized.

Seven years later, however, the installed total output of the MWM gas gensets sold by Kaltimex Energy in Bangladesh amounted to 100 MWM, and in 2014 to 500 MW. Gas gensets with a total output of 100 MW were sold and installed in 2018 and in 2021.

The project had been rolled out in 2009. Within three months, 15 MWM TCG 2032 V16 gas gensets were shipped to Precision Energy, where they were installed

by Kaltimex Energy.

The plant generates a constant output of 60 MWel, all of which is fed into public grids. In 2010, the MWM film “60 MW Around the World”, which had been produced for this project, won the intermedia-globe silver award for the best film in the documentation/point of sale category at the World Media Festival in Hamburg.

MWM TCG 2032 Gas Genset The MWM gas gensets of the TCG 2032 series are said to be perfectly geared to the challenges of a dynamic market environment.

Models in the output range of 3,000 – 4,500 kWel meet the high requirements of a broad range of applications and offer efficiency, reliability, flexibility and environmental sustainability, together with low lifecycle costs and high profitability.

The TCG 2032 series provides high efficiency and low lubricant consumption. With its lubricant consumption of only 0.2 g/kWh up to 30 percent lower lubricant consumption compared to competitor products thanks to optimised tappet

sealing, coke stripping rings and ring packages. It can also achieve high fuel utilisation and low operation costs thanks to an optimised chamber spark plug.

A new closed crankcase ventilation development enables utilisation of the blow-by gas which provides increased efficiency.

The gas genset also offers high availability through long maintenance intervals: first maintenance after 4,000 hours, major overhaul after 80,000 hours. Soot-free combustion also increases plant profitability.

MWM offers extended maintenance intervals for the exhaust gas heat exchanger.

SEVEN 1750 KW DIESEL ROTARY UPS SYSTEMS FOR A PETROCHEMICAL FACILITY IN MALAYSIA

A

USONIA S.r.l., has provided the equipment and systems integration for seven 1750 KW diesel-fuelled rotary UPS into a complete 12,25 MW back-up power solution with output@11,5kV for a petrochemical facility based in Malaysia.

Uninterruptible power supplies, with battery back-up, provide a few seconds to a few minutes, or up to a couple of hours, of backup power to immediately replace power from the main in case of failure.

While these short periods of time can give facilities time for an external generator to start and come online, or time for personnel to perform proper equipment shutdowns, UPS cannot support long duration power outages without transferring the load to a separate generator backup system.

Diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply devices (DRUPS) combine the functionality of a battery and a diesel generator for long term uninterrupted power without a transfer.

A DRUPS can have enough fuel to power the load for days or even weeks in the event of failure of the mains electricity supply.

All oil refineries and other petroleum processing facilities need utilities in order to function. The industry’s strict safety laws require emergency standby power systems to be installed and operational should a mains power disruption occur.

Control and automation of each of the seven generator sets for integration into the other systems of the plant has been designed so that a PLC panel can fully control any power emergency.

The Stamford S5L1D-H41 alternator used in the set is the largest alternator in the S5 range. All alternators in this range have been optimised for power density. One of the ways this has been done is through the new enhanced thermal management system which regulates the temperature of the alternator.

STAMFORD industrial alternators meet the requirements of the relevant parts of the IEC EN 60034 and the relevant section of other international standards such as BS5000, VDE 0530, NEMA MG1-32, IEC34, CSA C22.2-100 and AS1359. The powerful 32-bit microprocessor contained within the module allows for precision parameters measuring, fixed value adjustment, time setting and set value adjusting and etc..

Aside from their basic nutritional uses, starches manufactured here are used in brewing and as thickening agents in baked goods and confections.

Starch is used in paper manufacturing to increase the strength of paper and is also used in the surface sizing of paper.
