Page 11 On July 1st, 2020, NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Robert Behnken began a 7-hour spacewalk outside of the International Space Station to replace lithium ion batteries for one of the station's power channels. Since the initial delivery in December 2016, GS Yuasa has supplied 24 of its stateof-the-art Li-ion cells to the spacecraft, replacing the older nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells previously used. Due to the high energy density for their mass, just 24 of the Li-ion cells are needed to replace 48 of the NiMH batteries previously used. The new batteries will be replaced by astronauts during space walks outside the space station over the coming months. The battery replacements, which will have a 20-year lifetime, will put the station in a much better configuration for the long term, said Kenneth Todd, deputy International Space Station program manager, during a NASA press conference. Astronaut Robert Behnken commented: "When the space station is in the sun, it's collecting energy and it needs to store this for when it's in the dark," he said. All energy on board the ISS is produced by solar panels and stored in the space craft’s batteries. This stored energy is then used to power onboard systems during nocturnal periods – of which there are 16 every 24 hours due to the ISS’s orbit around the earth. GS Yuasa also supplies a range of other satellites with cells and recently became the first manufacturer to exceed four million Watt-hours of energy storage in orbit..
