New smart battery OEM announces plans to establish a gigafactory and HQ in Hilliard, Ohio: “There are tremendous opportunities to grow on our target market segments,” says Christophe Gurtner, CEO

Foresee Power, a key provider of smart battery systems, announced its plans to establish its North American headquarters and gigafactory in Hilliard, Ohio, in the Columbus Region.

The company is establishing an industrial base in the US to target the growing commercial vehicle market and associated products.

The move will optimize costs and the supply chain. It is required for certain key markets such as the city market, which requires a local presence to comply with the FAST Act’s Buy America provision (70% of value must be produced locally in public procurement).

The 138000-sq.-ft. scalable Hilliard site will host corporate office, manufacturing operations and R&D capabilities. It is strategically located to attract operators and engineers in a fast-growing neighborhood.

“We found Columbus to have the right ecosystem of

potential supply chain partners, academic partners and the right fit for workforce as we are looking at hiring production operators, R&D engineers and a full leadership team to run our North American activities,” explained Christophe Gurtner, Chairman & CEO of Forsee Power.

RNG microgrid for Microsoft to be built by Enchanted Rock

Microsoft has approached Texas,-based Enchanted Rock, a provider of electrical resiliency-as-a-service, to develop California’s largest microgrid, making it fully supported by renewable natural gas (RNG).

The microgrid will provide Microsoft’s San Jose, California, data center with backup power to ensure continuous operations.

“Today’s digital world relies on the uptime and continuity of data center operations,” said Thomas McAndrew, CEO of Enchanted Rock.

“This continuity does not need to come at the expense of companies’ carbon emission reduction goals or local air quality.

Microsoft’s decision to pursue a renewable microgrid marks another milestone in the industry as businesses continue to move away from conventional, less carbon-friendly methods.

“We expect this project will demonstrate that large-scale, reliable, and cost-effective backup generation with net-zero carbon can become the new standard.”

With ambitious goals of becoming carbon negative by 2030, Microsoft chose Enchanted Rock for its ability to develop a reliable microgrid with net-zero emissions. The project will outperform current California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions requirements for distributed generation, the most stringent in the world, with hourly local emissions 80%-96% lower than Tier-4 diesel standards while delivering higher reliability, the company said.

The facility will incorporate Enchanted Rock’s 0.45 kw module, enhanced to achieve CARB DG emissions levels, clustered to replace the typical large diesel units. The first phase of the project will include developing 140 units.

“This project helps Microsoft take a step towards our goal of eliminating dependence on petroleum-based diesel, while increasing the resilience of our data center and providing a much-needed capacity resource to the local grid,” comments Brian Janous, General Manager – DC Energy & Sustainability at Microsoft.

Power for the microgrid will be supplied by net-zero carbon RNG, injected upstream into the gas pipeline to offset the use of fossil gas.

Enchanted Rock sources RNG captured from facilities that emit methane such as food waste and agricultural operations, making it part of the circular economy with neutral or negative carbon intensity.

“California needs practical alternatives to diesel backup generation in order to protect public health and prevent catastrophic climate change,” said Bill Magavern, policy director for the Coalition for Clean Air, a statewide organization that advocates for clean air policies.

“This means deploying flexible, dispatchable solutions which can tackle the intermittent nature of renewables, while reducing the environmental and public health impacts of diesel-fueled generators.”

Cummins Inc. has introduced the first units in a new range of generator sets targeting standby and prime power duties in mission critical, commercial and industrial applications. The new Centum Series generators are engineered to meet customers’ precise power needs with high-efficiency engines that fit in a smaller footprint, reports the manufacturer.

The first Centum units are the C1250D6E and C1500D6E gen-sets. Rated 1250 and 1500 kW standby and 1136 kW and 1364 kW prime/data center continuous, all at 60 Hz, both gen-sets are powered by the Cummins QSK38 engine, a 12-cylinder vee-configuration diesel with bore and stroke dimensions of 159 x 159 mm for an overall displacement of 37.8 L. “Centum Series generators represent a significant shift in the Cummins approach to power system design, offering next-level flexibility, efficiency and sustainability,” comments Kunj Sheth, Global Marketing Director - Mission Critical, Cummins.

Sheth concludes: “It’s a higher efficiency engine, engineered to ensure you get the exact performance you need without having to pay more to install and maintain a larger generator set.”

The engines feature brushless, four-pole single bearing Stamford S Series alternators with Class H Insulation and PMG (permanent magnet generator) excitation.

“Temperature rise offerings range from 80º to 150º C, providing robust solutions for applications requiring enhanced motor starting requirements or significant amounts of non-linear loads,” he says.

Engine and generator functions are monitored and operated through the Cummins PowerCommand 3.3, an integrated microprocessor-based control system that provides voltage regulation, engine and alternator protection and power management/paralleling functions in a single unit.

The system includes integral Cummins AmpSentry protection, which provides a full range of alternator protection functions matched to the specific alternator, such as overcurrent warning and shutdown, short circuit shutdown, single- and three-phase fault regulation, over and under voltage and frequency shutdown and field overload shutdown.

Data center company Corscale will use ZincFive nickel-zinc batteries at its planned Gainesville Crossing Data Campus in Northern Virginia.

Corscale is the recently-launched data center platform of real estate firm Patrinely Group and its capital partner, USAA Real Estate.

Corscale is key to the Gainesville project, which is expected to begin with a 72MW two-storey buildingwithin the next few weeks. The site, Corscale's first, hopes to grow to 300MW. The data centers will deploy ZincFive nickel-zinc (NiZn) batteries for its uninterruptible power systems (UPS) instead of traditional valve-regulated lead-acid batteries or lithium-ion technology. The batteries will be housed in ZincFive's BC Series UPS battery cabinets.

"For Corscale, circularity and sustainability are core to our development philosophy," said Nic Bustamante, SVP of data center development at Corscale.

"ZincFive's nickel-zinc battery energy storage solution provides us with a better form factor, minimizes our maintenance schedule, allows us to deploy pre-commissioned capacity faster, offers a lower total cost of ownership, eliminates thermal runway concerns, and is fully recyclable – something VRLA and lithium-ion cannot match."

He added: "When you look at the detrimental impact on the environment that lead, lithium, and cobalt pose end of life, you realize that nickel-zinc recyclability provides long-term benefits beyond the data center."

Earlier this year, Wyoming Hyperscale White Box said that it planned to deploy the ZincFive UPS system at its first data center deployment.

ZincFive launched its MegaWatt scale battery cabinets in 2020, and the systems have been in long-term tests at QTS.

Compass Datacenters partners with Foster Fuels to use biodiesel in its generators Compass Datacenters has entered into a partnership with Foster Fuels to use Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil-based biodiesel (HVO) to fuel its onsite generators.

Foster Fuels will become Compass' preferred bio-diesel provider. Synthesized from vegetable oils, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil is a type of biodiesel where hydrogen is added to the oil, creating fewer emissions than regular fuel.

"The Foster Fuels partnership is part of our overall strategy to reduce our Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions and will make our generators far more sustainable," said Adil Attlassy, Compass CTO. "Based on our results to date, using HVO blended fuels is reducing our generators' Scope 1 GHG emissions by approximately 85 percent versus traditional diesel. Additionally, we are significantly reducing particulates and sulfides as compared to fossil fuels, eliminating diesel's dirty smoke plume."

Watt R. Foster, Jr., Foster Fuels President & CEO, added: "The initial rollout involves Compass' facilities in Northern Virginia, Arizona, and Texas. Our ultimate goal is to make HVO renewable diesel fuel available throughout the US."

The new batteries were provided by Urban Electric Power (UEP) when the supercomputer outgrew the capacity of its diesel backup generator, which could not be expanded because of California's environmental regulations.

This left part of the supercomputer center relying on street power with no backup, so it has installed zinc manganese-dioxide cells from UEP. These use the same chemistry as household AA alkaline batteries, altered to make them rechargeable for 10 years or more.

The installed new batteries will assist existing UPS c overage, with a further installation planned to support systems relying on street power.

The SDSC is a leader in high performance computing (HPC) and AI research, using equipment such as Intel Habana chips in its Voyager system. It has petabytes of storage, and hosts projects for researchers on the local campus as well as other collaborators across the nation. However, its power system has been stretched of late.

“Our computing capacity outgrew the size of our generator and we couldn’t expand it further,” said Christine Kirkpatrick, division director of SDSC’s Research Data Services and secretary general of the International Science Council’s Committee on Data (CODATA).

“A big portion of our racks have only traditional lead-acid UPS coverage which in an outage would last 27 minutes.

Some portion of our data center is only on street power, and goes out immediately when the grid fails.

Describing the UEP system as a "game-changer", she

said: “We can now offer hours instead of minutes of power to our UPS customers, and with our next installation phase, expand battery backup to those on street power.”

The new batteries will allow SDSC to recycle 20,000 lb of toxic lead-acid batteries, and replace them with a more environmentally-friendly alternative, while at the same time doubling the available backup power.

What is Voyager?

Voyager is the experimental compute resource newly installed at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).

Sanctioned for production by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the highperformance supercomputer located at UC San Diego is moving into its operational testbed phase.

Envisioned as a system to facilitate exploration of new architectures in support of artificial intelligence (AI) in research and engineering, Voyager is a major departure from former NSF systems which have been focused on delivering computing resource in support of traditional applications and programming models.

Instead, Voyager emphasizes deep engagement with the AI research community and features specialized hardware and software, close collaboration with app teams and the opportunity to share these experiences directly within the community, says researcher Amit Majumdar.

New CHP plant for indiana is operational A 16 MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant is now operating on the southern edge of Purdue University’s West Lafayette, Indiana campus.

The gas-powered plant was built and is owned and operated by Duke Energy. It produces electricity for the company’s Indiana customers and provides thermal energy in the form of steam for Purdue’s heating and hot water needs.

Through an approved agreement, Duke Energy will sell to Purdue the steam the plant produces. The plant can produce up to 150,000 pounds of steam per hour, according to the utility.

The utility also has a CHP plant at Clemson University in South Carolina. Duke Energy and Clemson, along with Siemens Energy, teamed up to study the use of hydrogen for energy storage and as a low-carbon fuel source at the Clemson CHP plant. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded a $200,000 grant for the pilot research initiative.

The pilot, called H2-Orange – a nod to hydrogen gas and the collaboration with Clemson University – began in March 2021 and would include studies on hydrogen production, storage and co-firing with natural gas.

The 15 megawatt (MW) Combined Heat and Power plant owned and operated by Duke Energy first went online on Clemson’s campus in 2019.

Today this CHP system provides South Carolina’s Clemson University with steam while also allowing the university to island from the grid to keep critical loads operational when the grid goes down.

Heat energy produced by the generation of electricity that would otherwise be wasted in a traditional process, is recovered by the CHP system – requiring less fuel to produce the same amount of energy.

Tony Putnam, a Director of Clemson University’s Utility Services department, explained that Clemson was already planning an ambitious project to the campus to provide back-up electricity during outages and reduce or eliminate restoration time.

“When the grid goes down, we can run most of the university through that CHP plant,” Putnam noted, highlighting the capability of CHP to provide resilient power and heat.

By reducing greenhouse gas emissions the CHP facility also helps Clemson meet its environmental and energy efficiency goals as it works towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Duke Energy owns the facility on its side of the meter, sending electricity produced by the plant to the grid while selling steam to the university. Revenues from this transaction are credited back to the South Carolina electric customers of Duke Energy in the amount of approximately $1.9 million per year.

“By locating generation sources near load centers with a high thermal demand, this results in one of the most efficient units in the Duke Energy fleet,” said Zachary Kuznar, Managing Director of Regulated Renewables at Duke Energy.

By increasing the number of solar panels it deploys by 50% Pittsburgh International Airport energy experts are hoping it will be enough to get more from its new microgrid.

The PIA microgridis currently powered by more than 9,000 solar panels and five natural gas generators.

The 23 MW project features five 4 MW Jenbacher natural gas engines and gensets, linked to thousands of solar panels installed on eight acres of a former landfill. IMG Energy Solutions owns the solar array.

The power generated at the site is the primary supply for the entire airport, including the terminals, airfield, Hyatt Hotel and Sunoco.

The airport can operate independently of the grid, but remains connected in case of emergency or backup power.

The airport says that its carbon-dioxide emissions have been cut by about 8.2 million pounds per year,

reports Tom Woodrow of PIT’s SVP Engineering and Infrastructure Intelligence.

“We’ve lowered our energy costs, we’ve lowered our carbon output and we have guaranteed ourselves resiliency and redundancy.

That’s really important to an airport,” explains CEO Christina Cassotis.

In 2019 the Allegheny County Airport Authority Board of Directors awarded Peoples Natural Gas a 20year contract to build, maintain and operate the microgrid at no cost to the airport.

Crews started construction in July 2020 and completed the project on schedule even as the Covid-19 pandemic stalled the aviation industry lin 2021.

The five 4-MW Jenbacher natural gas engines and gensets provide the site with energy independence. “We can totally disconnect from the grid and operate this in island mode,” explains Woodrow.

Note many airports have their own gas supply ‘down the road’, but Pittsburgh is situated in the centre of the gas-rich Marcellus Shale and has an ample supply not so far from the runway.

Allegheny County has one of the few airports with a natural gas well on-site.

“There is no shortage of natural gas in Pennsylvania,” Woodrow told the media.

“One of the goals was to support the local natural gas industry.”

Why power independence is important The presence of the Pittsburgh Airport microgrid means that problems associated with past power outages at airports - which have included Los Angeles International, Washington Reagan International and Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta - can be mitigated.

The microgrid also saves money on electrical costs.

The airport’s microgrid remains its primary power source.

However, it remains connected to the traditional electrical grid as an option for emergency or backup power, if required.

“Part of our mission is to be a world leader in aviation innovation and this project is about powering airports into the future,” commented Pittsburgh International Airport CEO Christina Cassotis.

“Our project brings power resiliency and redundancy to enhance safety and ensure continued operations for the traveling public.”

Fire in Chandler, Arizona, involved 4MW of AES lithium batteries A new report reveals details behind a week-long fire at grid-scale lithium battery facility in Chandler Arizona, close to to an Intel campus in April 2022.

The 10MW Dorman grid storage facility smoldered from 18th April until 21st April, 2022, while hazardous gas leaks forced the firefighters to evacuate nearby residents, and use a robot to open the building's door before it could be safely brought under control, says a report.

During the course of a fire an internal sprinkler system sprayed water on the batteries.

The facility was opened in 2018, and intended to balance the grid, allowing solar energy to be used by residents and local businesses round the clock.

The Dorman facility is owned by energy company AES, and provides electricity to the Salt River Project, Chandler's local electricity and water facility. The 600 sq ft building, on S 54th Street and West Pecos Road, contains more than 3,000 batteries supplied by Fluence. It can deliver 10MW of power for up to four hours, about enough for 2,500 homes.

Lithium-ion batteries are vulnerable to thermal runaway: In late July 2021, a fire broke out in a 300MW Tesla battery site in Australia, and burned for several days. Other recent battery fires include a fire in an Australian hospital.

Batteries are considered to be a possible cause of the unexplained fire which destroyed OVHcloud's SBG2 facility in Strasbourg in 2021.

In 2019, a battery facility in Surprise, Arizona, exploded, injuring four firefighters - in part, because a door was opened two hours after firefighters arrived at the scene.

The batteries exploded two minutes later.

In 2012, an AES facility in Flagstaff also caught fire.

NEWS San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) involved in new microgrid investment projects

Natural gas-powered fuel cell installed at corporate data center A small fuel cell at the Atmos Energy data center in Dallas, Texas. The 460-kilowatt natural gas-powered fuel cell was installed at a corporate data center in order to provide power independence, says a spokesman.

Atmos Energy is providing natural gas to run the fuel cell made from methane arising from gas wells, cattle farm slurry and even waste landfill sites.

Jennifer Ries, Atmos Energy vice president of pipeline safety, comments: “Natural gas once again proves it plays a pivotal role in lowering greenhouse gas emissions while increasing reliability to our critical facilities.

“We are excited to have this innovative technology operational and will continue to explore additional pathways to achieve increased reliability and a low carbon energy future.”

The company maintains that the natural gas-powered fuel cell offsets approximately more carbon-dioxide (CO₂) than either solar or wind and uses less land area.

A fuel cell converts the chemical energy from the methane in natural gas into electricity through a chemical reaction with oxygen.Not only are fuel cells quiet and reliable, with no moving parts and a durability of up to 20 years, but they convert natural gas directly into electricity with heat and a total system efficiency which can be much higher than other generation sources.

Instead of the carbon dioxide byproduct from generating electricity with water, biomass and fossil fuels, the only byproduct of fuel cells is using hydrogen as a fuel to produce electricity with water and heat as the only byproducts.

San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) has announced that four microgrids equipped with energy storage will be added to the San Diego region to help the state meet high energy demand, particularly on hot summer days and in the peak evening hours after solar power dissipates.

Microgrids can operate independent of, or parallel to, the larger regional grid. These four will be installed at critical community facilities so that they can remain powered during unexpected outages.

The utility received approval on June 23rd, 2022, from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to build these projects, which in terms of electricity will add a total of approximately 39 MW / 180 MWh of storage capacity at four company substations.

In 2013, SDG&E installed America’s first utility-scale microgrid to provide community resiliency to the remote desert town of Borrego Springs, which is connected to the larger grid by a single transmission line.

The facility served as a testbed to demonstrate the viability of a microgrid to manage high amounts (sometimes up to 100%) of renewable, intermittent energy resources to meet the community load that can be replicated by others while leveraging (post-project) off-the-shelf software. A spokesman later commented: “Borrego Springs represents the successful implementation of the largest microgrid in North America at that time and proved that a community-scale, highly renewable microgrid can be implemented with economic benefits.”

DTE Energy starts operations at 1,150MW Blue Water Energy Centre Blue Water is a 1,150MW combined-cycle natural gas-fired power plant, expected to provide clean, reliable, affordable power for 850,000 homes in the southeast Michigan region. The owner, large-scale electric utility company DTE Energy has announced the start of commercial operations at the Blue Water Energy Centre.

Blue Water is a 1,150MW combined-cycle natural gas-fired power plant, built on the company’s existing property in East China Township, Michigan, US. The power facility will provide adequate clean, reliable and affordable power to 850,000 customer households in southeast Michigan, said DTE Energy.

DTE Energy chairman and chief executive officer Jerry Norcia commented: “This is a significant step in transforming the way we produce power in a way that is cleaner, while also ensuring we’re generating reliable and affordable electricity for our customers 24/7.

“Natural gas significantly reduces carbon, sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions; utilises an affordable, easily transported and abundant domestic supply; and is the perfect enabler of renewables as it can start-up and shutdown very quickly.”

Construction at the project, which entailed an investment of around US$1bn, was officially commenced in 2018 and created over 700 construction jobs in Michigan.

It was completed within the time and budget limits, and supports its efforts to achieve the net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050, comments DTE Energy.

New 200 MW/200 MWh standalone battery storage facility is now operational in in Crane County, Texas

Transformation in Illinois – from coal burning plant to energy storage facility Five Illinois coal plants previously shut down or in the process of ending their coal operations are expected to begin operating energy storage facilities in 2025.

The state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) is enthusiastic and the repurposing of the facilities and has announced a US$280.5 million in funding over ten years for the five plant sites.

The payments will be part of the ‘Coal-to-Solar Energy Storage Grant Program’ designed to encourage companies to install energy storage equipment at the sites of former coal plants.

NRG Energy says it will receive a combined US$158.4 million to build energy storage projects, each 72 MW in size, at the Waukegan and Will County coal-fired plant sites.

NRG is expected to retire both Waukegan Units 7 and 8, totaling more than 600 MWs¬, and the 599 MW Will County Unit 4 in 2022. The units represent the last of the coal-fired capacity at those respective plants, as other units were retired years ago.

There are three other coal plants owned by Vistra subsidiaries. Each will receive a combined $122.1 million to build energy storage projects, each 37 MW in size, at the Edwards, Joppa and Havana coal plant sites.

The Joppa coal-fired plant was retired in the latter part of 2022, as part of a revised agreement to settle a complaint brought by the Sierra Club in 2018. The complaint to the Illinois Pollution Control Board alleged environmental violations prior to Vistra’s ownership.

Joppa’s first unit entered into operation in 1953 and a second unit two years later, according to reports. It is a 1,000-MW subcritical coal-fired facility.

The Edwards plant is also expected to be retired by the end of the year. Edwards has been in operation since 1960. Unit 1 was retired in December 2015. Unit 2 and 3 were brought online in 1968 and 1972, respectively.

The 434-MW Havana plant was retired in late-2019.

Illinois Governor, JB Pritzker, commented: "When it comes to Illinois' clean energy future, this initiative will help deliver on the progress our residents deserve."

The grant program is part of Illinois’ Climate & Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) passed in 2021 and aimed at moving the state toward 100% clean energy by 2050.

The first payments would be issued in 2025 when the energy storage sites are expected to be commercially operational. In order to qualify for grant money, the plants must have burned coal, have a generating capacity of at least 150 MW and commit to hiring a diverse workforce.

DCEO is overseeing the energy storage component of the grant program, while the Illinois Power Agency (IPA) will oversee a program to incentivize the production of solar energy and co-located energy storage. DCEO is also implementing several workforce training programs.

With the commercial opening of Jupiter Power’s 200 MW/200 MWh standalone battery storage facility Crossett Power Management, located in Crane County, Texas, now becomes one of the largest battery storage projects in ERCOT, the grid operator representing 90% of the state's electricity load.

Crossett is Jupiter's second transmission-connected project to begin operations, joining Flower Valley II, a 100MW/200MWh storage facility in Reeves County, Texas.

Additionally, the Austin, Texas-based company is commissioning a 100MW/200MWh project in West Texas that is expected to reach the market in late Summer 2022.

Jupiter’s total dispatchable energy storage capacity is now over 450 MWh, and the company has another 500MWh of projects in late stages of development.

Jupiter’s fleet of assets in operation or construction includes the largest energy storage project in Texas, among others, and one of the largest development pipelines in the country – sixty projects totaling over 12,000 megawatts (Source: Jupiter Power).

More than 200 deaths and widespread blackouts occurred following a 2021 February storm and this subsequently led to the Texas’ power grid being put under a public spotlight.

Mike Geier, Chief Technology Officer for Jupiter Power, commented: "We have witnessed the strain that the Texas climate can put on the grid during unseasonably warm days. Jupiter Power's projects like Crossett and Flower Valley II are optimally sited where the grid needs support to enhance resiliency both cost-effectively and reliably."

State regulators have asked Texans to reduce their power consumption during extreme heat in May 2022 after six power plants unexpectedly broke down. At that time ERCOT forecast an all-time peak summer demand of 77.3 GW. Despite this, regulators remained confident the lights will stay on in July, with more reserve power available to the grid than in previous years.

Nanogrid concept can be set up by one person and will generate power within 15 minutes A novel mobile nanogrid concept that can be set up and generate electricity within 15 minutes reports its developer, Sesame Solar.

Current models range in size from 3 to 12m with solar power production between 3-20kW and total battery storage of 15-150kWh. The units are easy to transport whether by road, sea or air and are easily adjustable onsite.

Designed and tested for extreme weather conditions and is disater-response scenarios, they are said to be simple to operate, with set up achieved by just one person.

Sesame Solar CEO, Lauren Flanagan, reports: “Our nanogrids are changing the trajectory of the effects of climate change while providing communities in distress with the power they need to access critical resources.”

She points out: “While we can’t stop hurricanes or wildfires from happening, we can create solutions that help communities recover efficiently without causing further damage to the environment.”

Users of the nanogrids concept so far include the US Air Force, major telcos and emergency response organisations. Other potential uses include providing power for mobile medical clinics, energising communications, electricity for community services and water purification and even electric vehicle charging. Sesame Solar says it was called upon to support the island of Dominica in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and in 2021 worked with Comcast to support communication recovery after Hurricane Ida. VC backers of Sesame Solar include Morgan Stanley, VSC Ventures and PAX Angels.

It provides a good example for US industry to follow.

It is the market leader in forged aluminum wheels, based in Meinerzhagen in the west of the Sauerland region of Germany.

In the nearby Grünewald industrial zone, OTTO FUCHS has invested about €80 million in a new surface centre known as OTTO FUCHS Surface Technology GmbH & Co. KG. Here, the beautiful Fuchs wheels get their special finish. The state-of-the-art coating plant is connected to a high-bay warehouse and a shipping and logistics centre.

The building application for the new plant included the request for permission to set up a cogeneration power plant to generate electricity onsite. The power-controlled cog eneration power plant with an MWM TCG 2020 V12 genset and an output of 999 kW generates about 50 percent of the power required onsite.

For us, these were good reasons to opt for another MWM gas genset for the new cogeneration power plant.“ The power-controlled MWM gas genset runs in flex operation, adapted to the factory‘s shifts. ”In this way, we c an effectively control the power generation in accordance with the demand in the factory,“ says Vladimir Giebert, Project Engineer Supply, Factory Planning, and Maintenance at OTTO FUCHS. For the cogeneration power plant in the Grünewald factory, the planning and rollout of the energy supply was handled by the company itself.

“During the planning and rollout stages, the challenge was to seamlessly involve a dozen suppliers in the face of a relatively tight time schedule,“ says Giebert.

The go-live took place in spring 2020.

Vladimir Giebert underlines t he good co-operation between OTTO FUCHS and Caterpillar Energy Solutions: ”As expected, the collaboration was very pleasant and professional. Minor initial difficulties were quickly resolved in a competent manner by the MWM Service in collaboration with our maintenance personnel.

“Apart from the good collaboration with Caterpillar Energy Solutions, our team members also played their part in ensuring that the project was successfully completed within a short period of time.“ The cogeneration power plant is not the only heat generator at OTTO FUCHS Surface Technology in Grünewald. A natural gas boiler and the heat recovery system of the compressed-air supply are hydraulically connected to the cogeneration power plant.

These individual heat generators are controlled by a central control which the TEM control of the cogeneration power plant is also connected to.

One of the challenges encountered during the installation, was to ensure the efficient networking of these various components.

After some minor initial glitches, everything is now on track, and the annual usage amounts to more than 70 percent.

The MWM TCG 3020, successor model of the TCG 2020, generator set effectively balances efficiency and reliabilit y. The genset delivers up to 18 percent more output than its predecessor, though its dimensions are almost the same.

Additionally, the new model features long service intervals with up to 80,000 operating hours until the next general overhaul (if the gas quality is high) and a total efficiency of more than 87 percent (with natural gas).

Thanks to their high reliability and profitability, the TCG 3020 gener ator sets with an output of 1,380 to 2,300 kWel are ready for the challenges of Industry 4.0.

New microturbines for the Caribbean & for Mexico Capstone Green Energy Corp. has recently announced that E-Finity Distributed Generation, Capstone’s exclusive distributor for the Mid-Atlantic, Southeastern United States and the Caribbean, has secured an order for two Capstone C1000S microturbine systems for a government water authority in the Caribbean, reports APN.

he two Capstone C1000S microturbine systems will provide emergency standby power to several pumping stations on one of the Caribbean’s island communities. The 2 MW system is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2022.

“Delivering clean, reliable, low-cost power to the Caribbean is a fundamental priority for Capstone and our partner E-Finity right now,” comments Darren Jamison, Capstone’s president and CE O. “The high cost of power, low grid reliability, and the desire to be green, make the Caribbean a growing market for our innovative products and services.”

Fuelled by natural gas, the microturbines will operate in stand-alone mode, providing critical power to the pumping station. The station will have the ability to automatically switch between the utility grid and microturbines for power generation.

This will help the local authority run the microturbines during grid outages or weather events and also peak shave to save money on utility costs.

In June 2022 Capstone received another order for two signature series microturbines totalling 1.6 megawatts (MWs) for a leading bottling and packaging solutions provider in Mexico.

The C1000S and C600S microturbines will be installed in a combined heat and power (CHP ) application. DTC Solutions, Capstone's exclusive distributor for Mexico and Central America, secured the order, which is expected to be commissioned before the end of the year.

Heat exchanger sector will benefit from new investment A major investment by Wabtec will enhance the company’s penetration into the renewable energy sector, especially in Europe. The company is investing US$8 million to install two furnaces which will produce aluminum-based heat exchangers for areas which traditionally use copper-brass.

ichael Sprenger, director of sales, Engine Cooling for Wabtec, commented: “We know that this approach - producing aluminum-based heat exchangers for applications which traditionally use copper brass designs - is going to be a more costeffective solution for our customers.

“The copper brass is working. It’s very scalable, we can satisfy all the requirements worldwide, but we do know this (aluminum) is goi ng to be a lower cost point for our customers to make them more competitive,” he concludes.

The two furnaces will produce two types of heat exchangers for large engines which go into demanding applications, such as are found in renewable energy, oil & gas sectors.

One furnace is currently being installed at the company’s Northampton, UK, facility. This operation already designs and manufactures a variety of cooling systems and related components, including radiators and charge-air coolers.

The Northampton site is one of the largest producers of industrial radiators in the world, manufacturing over 35,000 radiators a year

for companies in the power generation, off-highway and construction industries worldwide.

At the company’s facility in Jackson, Tenn., USA, an additional bar and plate furnace will be install ed this year to enable the company to produce what it calls the largest singlepiece aluminum core in the market.

The product will be well suited for mining, oil & gas, rail and the marine auxiliary markets, explains the company.

The new Northampton, UK, tube and fin furnace will produce sectional heat exchangers – “think Lego blocks,” Sprenger says – which will be better suited for stationary markets suc h as gensets.

“With those two technologies, we’re trying to cover all of those market segments,” Sprenger explains. “They are two technologies, but with the both of them we feel we can cover the spectrum.”

Sprenger said the difference in the two types of heat exchangers has much to do with the geometry of the core.

“That’s part of the intellectual property, the secret sauce that we’ve been working on and developing internally to optimise the heat transfer surfaces to get the cooling we need in the applications we need,” Sprenger poi nts out.

In the early 1980s, copper brass made about 95% of the radiator market for passenger vehicles in the USA. Since then, mostly to satisfy European environmental considerations and to improve fuel efficiency through weight savings, aluminum has become the preferred material for radiators and other components, including heater cores, condensers and evaporators.

Major investment planned for North America’s power networks Prysmian Group is planning to invest an additional $100m over the next two years to increase its North American plant’s production capacity. The aim is to support expected growth in the power distribution and transmission markets, helping meet the need for infrastructure upgrades in the region and the growing demand from clean energy sources, reports APN.

n additional $100 million will be invested over the next two years by the Prysmian Group, says an announcement by the company.

The Prysmian Group says its plan is to ‘support expected growth in the power distribution and transmission markets and to develop infrastructure upgrades across the USA to meet the growing demand for clean energy sources’.

This expanded investment follows the Group’s recent anno uncement to invest $US85m in its North American telecom plants to consolidate its role as an enabler for the energy transition and digital transformation happening across North America.

“The decision to increase the production capacity of our plants reinforces the Group’s commitment to North American customers” commented Prysmian’s North America CEO Andrea Pirondini. “More specifically, these investments w ill further increase capacity to support breakthrough projects, reinforcing the Group’s position in building the USA’s clean energy grid.”

Following the SOO Green HVDC Link project announced in late June 2022, Prysmian Group is also taking steps to help the region’s decarbonisation effort.

“The adaptation of the production capacity of the plants in North America is an important part of our Group investmen t plan, which

SOO Green HVDC Link ProjectCo, LLC (SOO Green) is currently conducting an Open Solicitation to alloc ate up to 2,100 MW of transmission capacity rights on its proposed underground, inter-regional high voltage direct current transmission line.

The SOO Green HVDC Link will link the MISO and PJM energy markets, giving buyers in PJM access to new sources of large-scale renewable generation and creating a new path to market for renewable generation in MISO. SOO Green says it has plans to create long-term contr acting opportunities for capacity subscribers in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois with this project.

Features of the plan include a converter station, featuring state-of-the-art VSC technology which will convert alternating current (AC) power from MISO’s 345 kV transmission system into direct current (DC) output for transmission; There will also be a 350-mile, HVDC transmission line consisting of a pair of five inch, 525 kV rubber-based XLPE cables installed in trench two-and-a-half feet wide

and five-feet deep; plus an AC converter station (also utilizing VSC technology) which will convert the DC power into AC power for transmission on PJM’s 345 kV system and beyond.

Significantly, the SOO Green HVDC Link will be installed within Canadian Pacific Railway’s right-of-way. This innovative partnership vests SOO Gree n with the necessary right-of-way for nearly all of its 350-mile route.

Each year, the Prysmian Group manufactures thousands of miles of underground and submarine cables and systems for power transmission and distribution, as well as medium and low voltage cables for the construction and infrastructure sectors.

The Group also produces a comprehensive range of optical fibres, copper cables and connect ivity systems for voice, video and data transmission for the telecommunications sector.

It marks the first distributed energy solutions portfolio update for the company since it launched in October 2021, having launched previously under Hitachi ABB Power Grids.

itachi Energy has launched improved and new versions of its PowerStore battery energy storage system (BESS) products, alongside other new and updated products and services in its Grid Edge Solutions portfolio.

It marks the first distributed energy solutions portfolio update for the company since it launched in October 2021, having traded previously as Hitachi ABB Power Grids.

Hitachi Energy put in place ‘ collaborative operations centres’ earlier this year, a network of facilities around the world which can be used to remotely manage and automate power grids and grid interaction for utility and industrial customers.

The company’s Grid Edge Solutions portfolio of digital automation products and services, called e-mesh, is used to control, dispatch and optimise the use of distributed energy resources and inc ludes the PowerStore BESS. "The entire energy market is transforming, and the challenges are expanding in scope and urgency. It is no longer about one

transformation. It is about many changes happening at once, and is always built on more electrification,” explains Hitachi Energy’s head of Grid Edge Solutions, Maxine Ghavi.

Hitachi Energy's PowerStore product has been upgraded to be integrated or modular, d epending on customer needs. It comes with optimised interfaces to battery solutions available with different lithium-ion subchemistries.

It comes with ‘harmonised’ grid code availability - enabling it to be operated flexibly in different markets and regions with different grid codes - as well as safety features, a company spokesperson said.

Available from 50kW up to megawatt-scale configurations, the sy stem is also designed to meet the needs of much larger-scale projects that the market is demanding and has enhanced cybersecurity features.

Also included in the e-mesh portfolio update are a new energy management system (EMS), added options for cloudbased monitoring and performance adjustment, and new options for MicroSCADA automation and RTU-based control.

For the first time, e-mesh now includes technology ready for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) bi-directional electricity flows.

Hitachi Energy said the updates make e-mesh a good fit for the e lectric vehicle (EV) fleet charging market; the e-mesh suite enables the creation of microgrid-like infrastructure which will be needed to charge fleets of EVs, from integrated battery storage to managing and forecasting loads.

Principal engineer at customer Snohomish County Public Utility District (SnoPUD), USA, Scott Gibson said: “With exceptional reliability battery energy storage becomes the linchpi n for our future infrastructure” as demand for renewable energy and V2G readiness increases.

“The right control and automation technologies are also needed to synchronise assets in order to maximise and optimise microgrid system performance.”
