Faster pace for investments and innovation The 15th of January 2015 will be remembered as the day when the Swiss National Bank abandoned the CHF/ EUR exchange rate floor. The decision came as a surprise and also shocked us somewhat. Nonetheless, we were able to quickly implement cost-savings and efficiency-boosting measures in all of the Group’s companies. At the same time, we also accelerated our investment pace as well as our innovation and development efforts. Moreover, we forayed into new markets. It was not a headlong rush forward but focussed on concerted action to assure sustainable development and a successful future.

The economic scenario Real revenues in Switzerland’s processing industries are largely at prior-year levels. As regards exports, sales to the EU and especially to Germany have picked up momentum. Due to the economic chill in Europe, we are currently seeing a slight capacity underutilization. Additionally, we expect somewhat lower margins than in the past. The measures we undertook to reduce costs and enhance efficiency are producing the anticipated results. However, it is our assumption that raw material prices will continue to rise. Review of financial 2015/2016 For the year under review, we posted gains in sales despite declines in our traditional Swiss markets for Flexible Packaging and Envelopes & Stationery. Thanks to a higher export quota, new production and commercial sites in Thailand and Turkey, as well as acquisitions, consolidated sales expressed in Swiss francs increased

yet again, by 3% to CHF 158.6 million (PY: 3%, CHF 154.2 million). Currency-adjusted growth was 6% (PY: 6%). EBITDA and net profit generated by the Wipf Group rose compared with the previous year. We owe this reassuring outcome to improved r esults in our traditional Swiss business lines, despite goodwill amortization on new acquisitions. At CHF 16.8 million, cash flow from operations again made it possible to fully finance substantial and expedited investments in fixed assets with own funds amounting to nearly CHF 10 million. Due to investments in acquisitions with available liquidity, the year closed with a surplus in net financial assets. As at the end of June 2016, the equity ratio was a very sound 65%. Because of acquisitions, the number of employees rose to 553 (FTE), mainly strengthening Group-wide know-how in the domain of digital services. Outlook for financial 2016/2017 After a somewhat lacklustre start, the overseas investment in RC-Film Co. Ltd. (JV 50/50%) in Thailand should pay off in the coming year. The acquisition of Flyerline Schweiz AG effective 1.1.2016 adds a division to the Group that has made considerable progress in digital-era capabilities and can contribute this added value for the benefit of the individual Group companies. Flyerline remains independent with its proven management at the Altnau site. The start of the new financial year on 1.7.2016 was marked by the introduction of a new four-division Group structure and the launch of a totally redesigned Group website: www.wipfgroup.com.

Two global trends – the Internet as an important distribution channel and digitization – open up exciting opportunities for us with new business models and processes. These trends will compete against classic distribution channels and value chains in legacy industries. We have already taken on these challenges and will continue to do so by making our business fit for the future with new products, offerings, and – in particular – digital services. A glimpse of the future After a slight decline in the past months, we expect sales to increase again looking forward. Plannability of business volumes is fraught with difficulties as uncertainties in near-term projections prevail. However, we are convinced that our investments during the past twelve months will contribute to improved efficiencies. Developments that worry us include the possible consequences of “Brexit” – the withdrawal of the United

Kingdom from the European Union –, the unstable situation in some threshold countries, particularly Turkey and Thailand, the acceleration of structural changes in Switzerland, the proliferation of regulatory constraints, and the potentially negative consequences of the mass immigration initiative if and when it is ratified. While we can live with the current exchange rate situation, we can only hope that the Swiss franc will not continue to appreciate as “Brexit” begins to materialize. In brief: economic volatility and the strength of the franc are characteristics of the current business scenario and call for circumspect navigation.

“wow!” – We Optimize Wipf! We laid the cornerstone for our focus on kaizen (change for the better) in the autumn of 2012. Thanks to valuable input of our employees, we were able to achieve genuine progress. Interdepartmental procedures were optimized and total resource effectiveness boosted by 20%. We guarantee quality and safety by closely monitoring hygiene and cleanliness. On 11 March 2016, we celebrated the award presentation with our staff at a storied location: our former premises on Badenerstrasse in Zürich where beer is brewed today and the Turbinenhalle restaurant moved in. We cordially congratulate all teams on their successful certification. We are very proud to have finished third in Zürcher Kantonalbank’s 2016 SME Competition for sustainable companies. Alongside the award, we received a check for CHF 30 000. You probably suspect it already: We owe the prize money to our teams’ initiative! We invested it in the award ceremony!

“I spare no effort to make callers on the phone or visitors at the reception desk feel welcome and competently advised. Christina Voit Reception/Switchboard, Wipf AG

Christina Voit | Reception/Switchboard

Together with your colleague, you are Wipf’s first voice. How does it feel when you have the first contact with a caller? First impressions count. I am very well aware of that, so I spare no effort to welcome callers and visitors with a friendly and professional attitude. Which possibilities does a 60% job offer you in managing your life? It allows me to find a good family life/work balance. And it gives me and my husband, who works irregular hours, enough time to spend together. Which company values appeal to you most? I appreciate the opportunity to work for a family enterprise that upholds traditional values, is very solidly grounded, and innovative. The entrepreneurial decisions are thought through. For me, it is a very positive feeling to be appreciated and vested with genuine trust. Which factors characterize your work as   a receptionist? Visitors, staff members and managers alike confront me with a wide range of concerns and wishes; this makes my job very diversified and interesting. Also, I can make use of my foreign language skills, so there’s never a monotonous day in my schedule. You are often able to identify people by their voices and then suddenly, they show up in person at the reception desk. What happens then? Frequently, when I hear a voice on the phone, I try to picture that person’s face. But I’m always happy to meet the real person behind the voice. You’re always in good spirits. How do you do that? I can benefit from many of my strengths in my job, and that’s probably why I project confidence. When I go home in the evening, it’s always a good feeling to know that I’ve done a solid day’s work. Since I work part-time, I can also devote my attention to other things to achieve a sense of balance. What’s more important: friendship or love? Both are very important to me. Friendship is a different kind of relationship than partnership. I’m fortunate to have both.

Response to the strong Swiss franc Switzerland’s economy is highly dependent on exports and thus particularly vulnerable to the strong Swiss franc. In this respect, increased wages and salaries play a pivotal role. Many companies have reacted to this scenario. Wipf AG was one of them, given an export quota of nearly 80% (PY: 73%) and an extensive level of vertical integration in Switzerland. Offshoring production into the eurozone was never considered an option. Instead, we focused on sustainable streamlining programmes and systematically invested in Switzerland. Three years ago, we successfully launched “wow!”, a programme for boosting the efficiency of individual business processes. Despite the fact that more than 120 measures have already been implemented so far, we still see further savings potentials.

Additionally, CHF 8 million have been invested in new technologies for the pouchmaking unit, valve production, and lamination. Although the replaced equipment was not obsolete and even found willing buyers, we felt that the time had come to rely on latest-generation technology for greater efficiency and reliability in production. Sales development In the wake of strong growth during the prior year, we posted a modest decline in sales revenues (1.7%) for the year under review. It was attributable mainly to hesitation among our Swiss customers who are exposed to heavy pressure in the domestic market. We had to accept the fact that domestic growth in the food industry lacks direction and that success in exports can be

achieved almost exclusively with premium products. The sales quota in Switzerland closed at 22% (PY: 27%), in the EU/EEA at 65% (PY: 62%), and overseas at 13% (PY: 11%). Earnings trend Our efficiency enhancement efforts were reflected in the financial result. But also thanks to a better year-over-year euro exchange rate, we exceeded the budgeted goals and were even able to finance the ambitious investments with generated cash flow. Wipf Doypak in Istanbul In Turkey, we identified a growing demand for our retortable pouches and rolls. We can be proud of our solid position in one of the most competitive markets. RC-Film Thailand (JV 50/50%) A year after we started producing CPP films for the retort market, we still have a long way to go. The technical obstacles (installation, commissioning, and production start) were successfully mastered, the product is stable,

and the quality fulfils the expectations of our customers. Unfortunately, customer validations of the films (new supplier with new film) are taking much more time than originally expected. We want to meaningfully use the waiting period to intensively promote global distribution. Future outlook In the past years, together with our customers, we had the privilege of embarking on many exciting development projects for a broad spectrum of applications. In some of them, we are in the finalization phase. These are positive signals for the future. However, we are aware of the fact that our company cannot exist with niche and speciality products alone. Looking forward, long-term entrepreneurial success can be assured only with attractive, innovative deliverables and developments – at the moment, we are doing well in this regard.

This year, Elco AG was awarded the Aargau Entrepreneurs Prize in the category “Best Industrial and Production Enterprise”. The year 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the competition which is organized jointly by the Aargau Trades Association and the Aargau Kantonalbank. Award eligibility criteria include entrepreneurial success, future outlooks, and corporate culture. After a multi-month selection process, the jury picked the winners. Compiling the application documents was complex – but also revealing. Next: the acid test. 15 minutes for the presentation. The jury members paid a one-day visit to the top 3 companies, after which they prepared the ranking list. We are proud of the award and of our staff members! The prize is an incentive to remain aware and committed. We will invest the prize money in a festive party for all employees.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge, because knowledge is limited. Francesco Ballato Graphic artist, Elco AG

Francesco Ballato | Graphic artist

What motivated you to become a graphic artist? I always knew that my profession would have to involve creativity; I was already very attracted to arts and crafts as a child. In the course of time, graphic arts became a natural calling for me. How multi-faceted is your daily work? It is highly diversified day after day, and that’s what I appreciate in this company. Whether it’s designing websites or creating hand drawings: the spectrum is boundless. I can contribute my talents across the board. Nowadays, in my profession, that is a very rare situation. For me, this diversity and variety is marvelous. What else interests you? My interests are broadly based. I like painting, and graffiti inspires me. Then, there’s playing and producing music. I enjoy skateboarding and snowboarding, movies, nature, animals, and mini-farming. What’s absolute happiness for you? For many people, absolute happiness is a material concept, like an expensive car or the pursuit of money or more money. For me personally, it’s mainly good health, a loving partner, leisure time, cats, family, and friends. If all these facets harmonise and fit together, then that is happiness. The more people appreciate what they already have, the happier they will be. Which product would you like to have designed? That’s a difficult question, because as a graphic artist, I want to present a product in an appealing way, for instance in advertisements or on covers, etc. From this perspective, I have been able to contribute my skills to quite a few products. This reminds me of a redesign project that occupied me for over two years. I was very proud of the result. I’m eager to get involved in a large-format project, like a product illustration or graffiti. It would then be showcased on a large wall or the side of one of our trucks. What’s your favourite soft spot? Even though my girlfriend and I changed our nutrition plan four years ago, we still order pizza once a week. So pizza is my favourite soft spot.

Sustainable development fortified Volatility in the markets The volume trend exhibited considerable fluctuations after the EUR/CHF exchange rate floor was abandoned. Metrics from the past allow only conditional projections of future volumes because they hardly provide dependable data that could be used for forecasting. After a lacklustre start, volumes picked up noticeably around the end of the year, but meanwhile, the individual months have become very volatile. The difference between one month with low capacity utilization and another month with brisk orders can amount to between 70 and 80% or more.

Challenging resource management Significant fluctuations in demand call for exceptionally high flexibility and tenacity on the part of the management and staff members. The annual work quota introduced several years ago is a proven instrument for cushioning such fluctuations and meeting delivery deadlines. Continuous increase in productivity In Europe, envelope segment volumes have been on the decline for years. In Switzerland, they are comparatively stable. Nonetheless, prices are under pressure because consumers are very price-aware shoppers. This forces us to further boost productivity even though it is becoming more and more difficult to identify savings potentials. Still, during the year under review, we were able to hold operating margin roughly at the prior-year level.

Investments in automation For years, the focus in investments has been on advancing automation in production and creating competencies in the digital world. Therefore, we are systematically updating our manufacturing resources with latest- generation automation components. Thus, with our machines, we are currently able to produce about 1 million envelopes within 24 hours. The degree of automation in our company is generally very advanced. Once a machine has been set up, it will process a raw material infeed and then deliver a palletized superior-quality product at the end of the production line. Solid financials assure stability The production of our products remains very capital-intensive. However, we were again able to reduce outside capital during the past year. As a financially sound enterprise, we are a dependable partner for our customers. Additionally, we have the necessary financial latitude to continue investing in the future. Digitization as an opportunity We consider digitization to be an opportunity rather than a threat. Digital communication with our customers is already a fact and will continue to broaden in scope. Our

intention is to further deepen the degree of digital automation and boost process efficiency even more. We see development potential especially in the domains of “Organizing and Writing” as well as in the launch of new products, particularly within the “Prestige Line”. Innovation as a motor We are successfully underway with the myelco.ch card portal and also see considerable growth potential in this segment. The ELCO-Notes App is unique and very innovative as well. With the use of a special ELCO notepad, handwritten notes can be easily digitized with a smartphone and swiftly converted into a multi-page PDF document. But innovation means more than developing new products. It also involves seeking trailblazing solutions in customer relations, be it with individualized customer shops or with digitized communication. We are convinced that our spirit of innovation and our systematic customer focus will allow us to continue on a path of profitable growth and to master the challenges of the future.

A new machine generation has gone online with the CMC Evolution 400. It introduces fundamental changes in the production of mailings. The commissioning of the CMC Evolution 400 represents a major investment in state-of-the-art technology and a challenge for our employees. In a single step, the CMC handles jobs that previously required several machines. Accordingly, our staff members had to rethink procedures, not just in production but also as regards leveraging the machine’s capabilities and restructuring handling processes. They were very receptive to and keenly interested in the new technology. The operators assigned to the machine underwent in-depth training during a week at the CMC plant near Florence. The familiarization phase at our premises in Brugg was accompanied by the manufacturer’s technicians. Thanks to the commitment of everyone involved, swift adjustment, and the determination to learn new techniques, the team succeeded in quickly acquiring specialized knowledge.

“Treat people the way you would like to be treated yourself.” Thomas Wenger PrePress, Swiss Direct Marketing AG

Thomas Wenger | PrePress

How would your life change without a   mobile phone? It wouldn’t be a serious problem for me, but having a mobile phone is certainly convenient in some situations. I would miss it for the things that it simplifies. You’re accessible for your children’s teachers, for your wife, for the company. It would be difficult to communicate with my parents, because they are hard of hearing; a mobile phone makes conversations easier. I would need to use the computer more often. That would complicate matters. What character trait would ou like to have? I am the way I am and that’s all right. If you were an animal, what would you like to   be and why? Oh, difficult question. It would be cool to be a gorilla (laughs), muscular by nature yet vegan nonetheless. Animals wouldn’t have to die for me to cover my protein requirements. Or a cat. Cats do what they want but are still loved and caressed, and get fed on top of that. What makes you proud more than anything else? My family, my wife, and my children. What do you like most about your job? The diversity, ongoing change, and new situations. I’m also happy that I can structure my day as long as I stay on schedule. Working with such a great team is a pleasure. I have found my place in the working world. Additionally, it’s always rewarding to hold the finished product in my hands after the workday has ended. Do you have to betray your ideals to live well? Treat people the way you would like to be treated yourself. To be a good Muslim and to take care of the weak and the poor. I try to treat everyone equally and always in a friendly way. And that’s what I get back from the people around me. To not want everything, or not always want more than one needs. To treat oneself to something once in a while. To be a good father and a good role model without being too strict. What makes you laugh? When one of my children does a good deed, such as when one of my sons helps an elderly lady and gets a smile in return, and a grateful thank-you. There are many things I can laugh about. In our team, we always have a good time and share jokes that make us all laugh – it’s great fun.

Well established profile in a challenging environment The perfect personal approach For four years now, Swiss Direct Marketing AG has been active in multichannel marketing with the claim “creating response”. The interaction of classic direct marketing and online media empowers innovative and cost-effective communication solutions that generate above-average response. It took years to develop the know-how behind this expertise. The programming and prepress teams leverage professional methods that make successful campaigns realistic in the first place. Swiss Direct Marketing is well positioned in the market and its successful projects have had a positive impact on target group awareness.

Investments and innovations Funds were invested in a new processing line last year. The number of process steps was reduced with the upstream trimming and merging equipment. Together with the digital web press installed two years ago, we now have the ability to cost-effectively produce extremely complex advertising media. The upstream software that controls multichannel campaigns was updated as well. Our specialists are able to physically and digitally implement and customize all approach techniques without requiring the customer to build elaborate IT solutions.

Data quality label guarantees safety for the customer Direct marketing projects rely on sensitive personal data. A functioning data protection management system is essential for security in handling recipient data profiles and effectively fulfilling legal privacy and contractual provisions while safeguarding an appropriate level of information integrity. We have been officially certified with the GoodPriv@cy® label since August 2015. This is an important statement for our customers because they want to be assured that we handle their data with priority on safety. Process automation with SAP ERP Internal processes were further optimized as well. They were redefined and mapped in SAP during a project that lasted about 2 years. Now, the entire order management process is IT-based. Thanks to this structured process, we can further increase security in the order handling domain.

Large diversity of direct marketing services and products Today, IT is indispensable for customer relationship management and also for direct marketing. But the degree of complexity remains formidable. To master the challenges, Swiss Direct Marketing has the in-depth know-how, optimized services, and matching products. Greater momentum in Western Switzerland PP Mailing House SA in Givisiez is an affiliated company with the same profile and deliverables as Swiss Direct Marketing AG. It is evolving briskly and posted slight growth last year. Production capabilities were further broadened as regards both personalization and filling processes. The personalization software has also been updated to the same status at both locations. Consequently, both companies can provide the entire range of products and services. This allows customers to benefit from efficient, forward-looking multichannel campaigns in Western Switzerland as well.

Sound financials The company achieved its operational goals. We are also moving forward in our plan to reduce borrowed capital. Thus, since it was founded four years ago, the company is poised to accomplish its future investment and growth objectives.
