Dear customers and partners, A new face? Yes and no. Yes, because as Wipf AG’s new CEO and author of the preface, I have the pleasure of inviting you for the first time to spend a few minutes reading our customer magazine.

No, because my career with Wipf AG meanwhile spans over 20 years; previously, as COO, I managed the plant. I very much look forward to meeting you personally in the near future!

Did you attend the 7th wipf day in 2019? If not, you really missed something! It was an informative event with a focus on sustainability and an exciting lecture by Dr. Daniele Ganser entitled “The global struggle for oil and natural gas” in which we discussed energy logistics.

We would be delighted to partner with you in the development of resource-lean solutions systematically tailored to your product and requirements in compliance with the sustainable “cradle to grave” principle that spans the entire value chain.

In this issue, I can warmly recommend the success stories of several customers who packaged both traditional and innovative products in stylish and contemporary ways: Be it Black & Blaze with coffee from a small, exclusive roaster on the outskirts of Zürich which creates specialities right in the neighbourhood. Or “Laurie’s Tummy Loving Foods” which got London hooked on its sauerkraut and cool packaging concept. For Smoothie Bowls, a trend product, packaging is produced on digital presses in short runs based on monomaterials. This new packaging type opens up totally new marketing opportunities. Together with Simply V, we were on the mark. The attractive standup pouch with high-quality gravure printing features a see-through window that promises purely vegetal-based pasta enjoyment. Give it a try.

More space at headquarters

Effective 1 July 2019, Wipf AG restaffed its leadership positions. Oliver Fankhauser succeeds Hansruedi Schafflützel who has been appointed head of the Flexible Packaging Division at Wipf AG, RC-Film, and Michel AG.

In his new position, Oliver Fankhauser will be the acting CEO of Wipf AG. He is wellknown within the company. Previously, he had held various management positions, among others as head of production and most recently as COO. Stefan Sigrist is his designated successor. Yvonne Zuberbühler is now responsible for all prepress operations and will serve as the deputy of the new COO.

In addition to the expansions, the main building was also modernised. The project spanned about 8 months. The new facilities were festively inaugurated in midJuly 2019. The first major event (wipf day) already took place there on 27 June 2019.

Guests and the entire Wipf team were enthusiastic about the new settings.

At its headquarters in Volketswil, Wipf AG expanded the office wing by adding another floor. Today, the building accommodates four floors with offices and a number of meeting rooms.

SUSTAINABILITY AS AN INNOVATION DRIVER

Review of 7th wipf day 2019 Sustainability as an innovation driver – this was the motto of the 7th wipf day in Volketswil on 27 June 2019. Some 100 attendees accepted our invitation to convene at our in-house premises. An interesting tour of the production facilities and informative lectures met with a receptive audience at the event. Miriam Rickli, a popular TV and event moderator, escorted participants through the day with charm and wit.

The wipf day took place in Volketswil for the seventh time. This year, our new facilities served as the venue for the event. The spacious auditorium is perfectly suitable for events of this kind.

An unusually large number of customers and partners accepted our invitation to come to Volketswil this year. The programme was both diversified and exciting. A hands-on production tour, interesting panel discussions, and informative lectures offered many touchpoints for interaction among the attendees.

One of the highlights of the day was the very interesting onehour presentation by peace researcher Daniele Ganser that provided compelling statements concerning the global struggle for oil. He showed that it is possible to fully rely on renewable energy sources without causing conflicts or violence. Daniele Ganser’s focus was on the unabated growth of oil consumption. Currently, 90 million barrels of oil are being consumed on a daily basis around the world.

Schlattgut - a great place to enjoy The evening gradually came to an end at a particularly idyllic location. Amid panoramic views surrounded by greenery, we spent several hours in a relaxing atmosphere. Musical entertainment was provided by Dominik Liechti, Tom Lee, Lucky WĂźthrich and their BearBeat Soundmobil.

Black & Blaze only hires people who like rock music. Loud rock is the acoustic backdrop for those who enter the former garage that is now a small roasting facility. The highly praised Swiss coffee comes from Ebmatingen, a small town near Zürich.

High-quality sauerkraut and cool packaging: that’s how the success story of “Laurie’s Tummy Loving Foods” started in 2012. Retailers throughout London were thrilled. In 2018 Laurie Foods connected with Wipf in order to upgrade the spec of the pouches.

Oatsome founders Tim and Philipp want to communicate the health aspect of their Smoothie Bowls trend product but at the same time make a clear statement as regards packaging.

That is why they opted for monomaterial packaging.

If you are looking for an extraordinary, high-end, and fairly traded coffee, Black & Blaze is where you need to go. Former advertising photographer Claude Stahel is the master of good taste. Now 52, he founded the company in 2010 and serves restaurants as well as delicatessen shops in greater Zürich. Claude Stahel even created an exclusive coffee line for Andreas Caminada, the celebrated Gault & Millau star chef.

The Black & Blaze coffee varieties are superbly packaged. Wipf AG produced several pouches in different sizes. The gravure-printed packaging is endowed with consumer-friendly opening and resealing features. The aroma of the coffee beans remains consistent thanks to the integrated WICOVALVE®.

The pouch features laser perforation and starter notches that prevent the film from tearing. A zipper assures convenient resealing of the packaging. But that’s not all. Apart from Laurie Food’s eye-catching design implemented on a digital press, the packaging has an integrated WICOVALVE® aroma-protection and pressurerelief valve as well as a see-through window. The window is a practical design element for optimised exposure of the packaging at the POS. The Original Sauerkraut, Beetkraut, and Kimchi Kraut varieties are available at select stores in Great Britain.

For the first time, the five delectably fruity varieties are being presented in flexible monomaterial packaging. The three-ply OPPmatt/OPPalox/CCP laminate is suitable for such types of foods. Each of the five varieties was printed on a digital press. Initially, it seemed to be a problem but then, it turned out to be an ideal printing method for monomaterial laminates.

The two young entrepreneurs have been developing and producing the vitaminrich Smoothie Bowls since 2016. Developed in collaboration with nutrition experts, the recipes are 100% natural and loaded with fruit, cereals, and superfoods. In turn, they contain neither additives nor refined sugar. Prepared in less than 60 seconds, they assure an energetic start into the day with merely 200 calories.

A success story from the Allgäu For meanwhile four years now, a company in the Allgäu has been totally dedicated to producing quality foods on a purely vegetal basis. Under the Simply V brand, E.V.A. GmbH develops, produces, and markets vegan specialities for discerning consumers. Not only is the content vegan, the packaging also contains no animal constituents whatsoever. Wipf AG produced several different stand-up pouches for the innovative Simply V brand.

In 2015, E.V.A. GmbH introduced a purely plant-based alternative to fresh cheese. It was a successful launch: meanwhile, the Simply V brand ranks among the most successful cheese alternatives in vegan nutrition.

All products are made with coconut oil and almonds; they reflect the high quality ambitions that E.V.A. GmbH upholds. The products are developed by a team in which each member has many years of experience in traditional cheesemaking.

This pioneering achievement is highly esteemed by consumers and retailers alike.

They appreciate the flavour and the preparation options of Simply V. In the past years, numerous awards have shown that E.V.A. GmbH was able to build an excellent track record in product development and production processes for plantbased luxury consumables.

Simply V enriches every menu and tastes good not only on bread. Whether as a spread, in slices, or grated – every Simply V product is a great match for warm meals as well.

The vegan stand-up pouch with guaranteed resealability What doesn’t immediately meet the eye is the fact that apart from the purely plantbased product itself, the packaging also contains absolutely no animal-sourced components. In collaboration with E.V.A. GmbH, we succeeded in producing a stand-up pouch that is 100% vegan. This special pouch does not differ from conventional pouches in any way. It is just as easy to open and reseal as a normal pouch, also in combination with a vegan zipper. In our opinion, this pouch is a superb way to be even more successful at the POS.
