Packaging for food challenges our ingenuity. Foods are highly sensitive products that challenge our commitment to optimized packaging day after day, always in an ongoing dialogue with our customers.

Changing lifestyles and greater mobility have prompted retailers to market more and more convenience products. In the past years, the demand for convenience products has grown significantly, both in the commercial and household environments; consumers expect extended shelf lives without any loss of ­flavour and quality. To cover the growing demand for products of this type, we deploy ten pouching machines to produce up to 700 million sidesealed, stand-up, five-seam, or gusset bags per year.

In the food segment, a distinction is made between wet-product and dry-product packaging. Wet goods such as sauerkraut, soups, sauces or hash browns require extremely high durability to withstand hot filling with subsequent pasteurization or retorting. Good laminate adhesion, odourlessness, and strict

hygiene standards are key factors in the food sector, but the development of optimized packaging must also focus on presentation as well as protection during handling and storage.

According to the motto “as much as necessary, as perfect as possible” Every day, the specialists in our development department are at work to find new and better packaging solutions precisely tailored to the packaging content and consumer expectations. To assure that our solutions interact seamlessly with all processes to which they are exposed, we tailor them to the product and to the stress profile, for instance on the customer’s filling and/or pouch sealing line.

We accompany each new packaging solution until it is integrated in our customers’ production environments and thoroughly test the usually complex composites on their machines. It is on the machine that application technology factors such as sliding properties or sealability are crucial.

Quality assurance Our laboratories regularly test new materials to determine their suitability for our composites and conversion products.

Our test equipment: ■ Tensile testing units for determining interlayer adhesion and sliding properties.

■ O2D units for determining oxygen permeability.

■ Infrared spectrophotometer for identifying substances.

■ Microscopes for determining layer structures.

■ Gas chromatograph (GC) for determining residual solvent concentrations.

■ And much more.
