Dear customers and partners, The essence of every good packaging solution: advice and understanding of the requirements. Personal contacts with our customers assure that in the end, their product is perfectly packaged and complies with all expectations. Unique, functional, individualised and stable packaging is the result of a development process that often spans over several months. Precisely this is the topic to which Wipf’s Flash, our customer magazine, is devoted. This issue offers you exciting articles about new products and proven ones. The WICOVALVE® – an indispensable product – was originally developed for the coffee industry but today is used for any product that outgases. Are you familiar with Flatev, a young company in Switzerland that intends to conquer the world with a tortilla machine? Or with the success story of Les Cafés Esperanza, a traditional coffee roasting business whose focus is on quality, fair trade, and genuine craftsmanship as elements for winning over a highly competitive market? Both companies not only created a good cultural background but with digital printing took the opportunity to make the impossible possible. The limits of digital printing technology are far from being exhausted, however. We look forward to implementing further projects with you, to seizing new opportunities. Initially, they may be modest, but experience teaches us that good ideas often stand their ground. I wish you enjoyable reading. With kind regards,

WICOVALVE® - THE ONE-WAY VALVE

Small but impressive The vision of a one-way valve was born in the 1970s. After an extensive development phase, the first valves were finally introduced in 1982. Then as now, the WICOVALVE® is the coffee industry’s key to success. In the past years, valve technology was discovered for more and more new applications. Meanwhile, there are matching valves for every product that outgasses, such as sauerkraut, ready meals, cheese, dough, soy, and mushrooms. What makes the WICOVALVE® so unique? It is the only product worldwide that assures consistent quality with its functional integrity across a period of three years. This is made possible by high quality valve components and materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene or Ecovio® (a biodegradable material). During the life cycle of a package, the valve must open and reclose many times without allowing oxygen to diffuse back into the pack. This is why WICOVALVE® versions, depending on the application, have different material combinations, opening pressure levels, flow capacities and particle protection. Thanks to the interaction of these properties, the impeccable quality of the packaged product and its aroma are guaranteed over a lengthy period of time.

New WICOV ALVE® s hop o nline

The Wipf AG valve shop was recently redesigned. The shop stands out with many advantages and new features. In particular, easier navigation and the new payment process assure a seamless purchasing experience for customers. www.wicovalve.com

Wipf AG launches the new WICOVALVE® High Flow valve The W059 WICOVALVE® supersedes the W008, standing out with an improved and more stable quality. The new valve is suitable for large-volume packs that must rapidly evacuate air when stacked to prevent bursting. The target users for the new High Flow valve are the food, pet-food, non-food, and pharma industries.

The W059 High Flow valve is generally deployed for large pouches that need to be evacuated in a very short period of time. This prevents the packaging from bursting when it is stacked.

The properties of the W059 are similar to the predecessor model but features impressive improvements in quality and vacuum holding. The opening pressure was also modified and now ranges from 3.0 to 9.0 mbar. The W059 valve is made of high-quality components and materials (polyethylene) . This assures the perfect functionality of the valve at all times. The valve prevents the ingress of air into the packaging while degassing when stacked and later as well. The W059 High Flow valve is generally deployed for large pouches that need to be evacuated in a very short period of

time. This prevents the packaging from bursting when it is stacked. The use of this valve guarantees stable stacking in shipping and warehousing situations. Another advantage: The functionality of the W059 valve is consistent across at least three years, just like all other valves in the WICOVALVE® range.

LES CAFÉS ESPERANZA SÀRL

Behind the scenes of craft roasting For many people, coffee is considered to be very important and culturally significant. Coffee also symbolizes relaxation and enjoyable timeouts. No wonder the popular beverage has conquered many countries in the course of the years. Les Cafés Esperanza Sàrl, a coffee roaster, is well aware of this and therefore invests its entire know-how in creating excellent coffee.

The villagers are familiarized with the production rhythm of the Les Cafés Esperanza Sàrl roasting company. The streets of Vuadens are redolent with a fragrant scent every time roasting starts. The drums rotate at top speed all morning long. It takes 15 minutes to process 30 kg of coffee. The art of roasting Roasting craftsmanship is a conclusive test. It is the third phase after growing and fermentation. Roasting is an art in which many parameters must be just right. The process of roasting raw coffee is what gives the beans their inimitable flavour. Green coffee unfolds its aroma, its fragrance and characteristic colour in the roasting facility at temperatures of 220°C or higher. This takes many years of experience. The roaster mainly relies on his senses but of course must master the equipment and the measuring instruments. Philippe, the coffee roaster at Les Cafés Esperanza Sàrl constantly observes the colour of the beans and hears them crack in the heat. With the control system, he adjusts the speed and intensity of the process to achieve a uniformly homogeneous roast all the way into the

core of the beans. The nature, duration, and temperature of the roasting process influence the flavour and acidity. The longer the duration of roasting, the lower the acidity. 100% fair trade at Esperanza, too Since the 1970s, NGOs have been committed to equitable working conditions, fair trade, and environmentally friendly and regionally adapted growing methods. In the past 40 years, fair trade has evolved enormously: fair-trade coffee has become more and more popular. Today, certified coffee is available in nearly every grocery store. The share of ecologically cultivate coffee is also growing. This benefits farmers and the environment: coffee is grown exclusively in poorer developing countries. For nearly 20 years, Les Cafés Esperanza Sàrl has been procuring coffee beans from fair-trade sources. All Esperanza coffee varieties are labelled with the MaxHavelaar certification mark.

With the control system, Philippe adjusts the speed and intensity of the process.

Wipf AG produced the 15 different Esperanza varieties on the HP Indigo 20000 digital press. The downstream processes were handled by the pouchmaking department. The coffee is packaged in a high-grade POLIALUVEL® laminate. A WICOVALVE® integrated in the packaging assures optimized aroma protection.

Individuality and short turnaround times define the purchasing behaviour of consumers. Conversely, a highly active market with a variety of products and services trying to attract customers attention. Therefore, customized top-selling packaging solutions should be attractive, individualized, consumer-friendly, as well as convenient and durable. Let us show you three examples that couldn’t be more different.

Status quo digital printing: Pouches and rollstock

Apéro cheese snack – convenient and tasty

The popular package among travellers

Digital presses mark an important milestone in the development of modern printing methods. We were directly involved in this trend as well. In the future, digital printing will continue to build momentum due to “Big Data”.

About two-thirds of all consumers don’t decide on which cheese to buy until they are at the point of sale. Intercheese AG has defined new trends with its packaging. The single-portion pack reflects the zeitgeist.

Milka and Oreo are arguably among Mondelēz’ most popular brands. The Travel Edition packaging with the handle is convenient for travellers and appealingly designed.

It is becoming more and more important for packaging to reach the consumer at the right time, at the right place, and with the right message. It must be tailored to their needs. The more data companies collect about their customers, the more accurately they can personalize their offers and produce them on digital presses. Whether ready-made pouches or rollstock, digital printing does both. Cover films are particularly trendy. Various contemporary motifs can be printed in one pass, particularly an advantage when many varieties are involved. But more and more retortable and pasteurizable products are being packaged in digitally printed materials as well. The trend toward individualization in flexible packaging is obvious.

The new Sbrinz AOP Apéro Snacks are packaged in a handy, resealable cup. Its cover film is a two-ply POLIVEL® laminate. The two motifs were printed in short runs on our HP Indigo 20000 digital press. The cups are available at select Migros points of sale throughout Switzerland. Further designs will be added in the near future. Did you know that Sbrinz is a hard and very hard cheese that comes from Central Switzerland? It ranks among Europe’s oldest cheese varieties and is traditionally crafted by hand mainly in the cantons of Luzern, Obwalden, and Nidwalden.

The chocolate maker sells the newly formatted Milka Biscuit Collection and the Oreo cookies in duty-free shops around the world. The designs stand out with a special gloss effect which is produced with gravure printing, by the way. The aluminium-free POLIVEL® MET is the laminate used by Wipf AG. A good bond and tear-resistance make this material an ideal choice for packaging of this type. Tear notches, a double laser perforation, and the convenient handle provide enhanced user friendliness. Mondelēz plans to broaden its product portfolio in the Travel Edition segment. This category apparently sells four times faster in comparison with conventional sales outlets.

FL AT E V - I N N OVAT I V E, YO U N G, SW I S S

The capsule business for flatbread Insert a capsule filled with dough in the machine. Seconds later, it dispenses a freshly baked flatbread serving. That’s how easy the fully automatic tortilla machine works. Six years ago, native Mexican Carlos Ruiz teamed up with Jonas Mßller and master of engineering management Louis Frachon to incorporate the Flatev (flatbread evolution) start-up. Wipf AG produced the cover films for the individual tortilla capsules.

Mexican flatbread is gaining popularity in Europe as well. Here, though, genuine freshness is usually hard to get. People who have bought flatbread at the supermarket know this well. While using a coffee capsule machine, Carlos Ruiz asked himself whether the same principle might be adaptable to a machine that bakes flatbread. The idea was born! The development work was demanding. The tortilla capsule machine is scheduled for its market launch next year. First, the focus will be on the USA. But global market potential exists, including Switzerland. Restaurants hardly serve fresh, homemade tortilla and at home, they are rarely prepared because of the lack of time or know-how. Initially, the tortilla machine will be marketed to restaurants and hotels. The coming years will show whether the invention really makes a breakthrough. Functional diversity is a big asset of the tortilla machine. The system can bake flatbreads such as naan, piadina, pita, ruti, etc. Moreover, each flatbread variety comes in a range of flavours. The dough requires no chemical additives whatsoever. Wipf AG produced the cover films for the capsules of all flavour varieties.
