Dear customers and partners, “The next big thing will be a lot of small things”: This was the bottom line of the 6th wipf day that took place at our headquarters. The current breakthrough in digital printing was clearly felt at Wipf’s customer convention. We are particularly proud of having achieved a further evolutionary step forward in digital printing. For the first time, flexible retortable packaging for food or pet food can be produced on digital presses. During the first half of the year, at various trade shows such as Interpack in Düsseldorf and the Aerosol and Dispensing Forum in Paris, we were yet again able to impress industry professionals with our broad range of packaging solutions for food, pet food, cosmetics, medical, and non-food products. Our biodegradable laminates attracted considerable attention. Wipf Bio Packaging is based on latest-generation high-performance films made with 100% organic raw materials. The environmentally friendly packaging had its debut at Interpack 2017. The internationally active, family-owned Wipf Group has made encouraging progress in the past years. Strategic acquisitions further strengthened several of its divisions and opened up new business segments. The addition of Christinger Partner AG in Schlieren creates new long-term opportunities within the entire group, making it possible to continuously evolve operations and to bolster the significance of Switzerland as a production site. Turn to page 7 for details. I wish you enjoyable reading. With kind regards,
Hansruedi Schafflützel CEO

On 10 May 2017, Interpack in Düsseldorf closed its doors after 7 successful show days. For the second time, Wipf AG presented its innovative packaging solutions in the separate SAVE FOOD exhibition at the Innovationparc Packaging. 170,000 visitors and 2700 exhibitors from about 60 countries – one thing is sure: there was plenty of action at Interpack 2017. The record-level attendance was also noticed at the Innovationparc Packaging. Numerous members of the SAVE FOOD initiative, including Wipf AG, presented their studies and their own inhouse approaches regarding food waste issues there. Yet again, Interpack 2017 was the show window of the global packaging industry.
Our stand was also visited by many national and international guests. In particular, our biodegradable laminates attracted considerable attention. Show highlights included digital printing, now available for retortable products as well, and the biocompostable W606E valve from the WICOVALVE® line. Additionally, a number of lectures and presentations offered visitors welcome insights into sustainable packaging concepts. VP Sales & Marketing Malte Jonsson presented the latest statistics of the SAVE FOOD mango project in Kenya. Wipf AG supported Azuri Health Ltd, a Kenyan enterprise, in the graphic design and production of packaging for dehydrated mango slices.
Customer expectations, competition, legislation, digitalization: Everything is spinning ever faster and confronts us with new challenges. New approaches and solutions are needed to keep us fit for the future. The new Wipf Blog gives you answers to topical questions. The focus is on the following themes: Saving space on the shelves and en route, the 10 steps from film to packaging, torn pouches, seal failures, packaging quality as a success factor, and much more. The Wipf Blog goes live in the autumn of 2017.

The Himmapan Lodge has an idyllic lakeside location and offers fantastic mountain views.
Encounter with elephants and giraffes After the official part of the event, we convened at the Asian-style Himmapan Lodge in Rapperswil. We experienced a memorable tour through the zoo with Franco Knie, the former director of the Swiss national circus, and Benjamin Sinniger, the director of the Knie Children’s Zoo. They acquainted the guests with the secrets of elephants. The feeding of the giraffes was an additional highlight. Then, the guests were pampered with Thai cuisine in the lakeside restaurant. The fantastic views of the Himmapan elephant park, the camel paddock, and the surrounding mountain landscape created moments of relaxation and enjoyment.
With great enthusiasm, Franco Knie (above) and Benjamin Sinniger toured the guests through the Knie Children’s Zoo in Rapperswil.

Environmentally friendly and sustainable
Suitable for pasteurizable and retortable films and pouches
Wipf AG is expanding its product range with biodegradable laminates. Wipf Bio Packaging is based on the latest generation of high-performance films made of 100% organic raw materials. This environmentally friendly packaging material was introduced at Interpack 2017.
On the occasion of the 6th wipf day, the digital printing pioneer and flexible packaging specialist introduced the next development step in digitally printed pasteurizable and retortable packaging.
Biofilms, whether cellophane or PLA (polylactide = lactic acids) can be printed in various colours without any negative impact on industrial composting. They are EN 13432 certified and can be supplied as roll stock or premade pouches just like traditional polyolefin packaging materials. Further applications of Wipf Bio Packaging include lidding films for sealing against deep-drawn PLA trays. The new biofilms are transparent and do not require any metallization. Like conventional packaging materials, they provide a reliable protection of the product (dried fruit, cereals, candies, teas and much more), with an optimal aroma protection and resistance against products with high fat contents.
The current breakthrough in digital printing was clearly felt at Wipf’s customer convention. The share of digital press jobs is growing continuously. Prominent FMCG companies are aware of the fact that digital solutions have gained significance in the packaging industry. The advantages are compelling: Short runs can be customized for targeted marketing campaigns. Packaging can be categorized and personalized on demand by region, season, campaign, or customer segment.
For Wipf AG, the biodegradable laminate materials are a perfect way to provide consumers with an extra benefit. Wipf Bio Packaging is a logical step in the implementation of Wipf AG’s sustainability concept.
For the first time, flexible retortable packaging for food or pet food can be produced on digital presses. Depending on the product, options allow the combination of various laminates to achieve good stability for sterilization and pasteurization. The special coating applied in a further manufacturing process involving HP Indigo ElectroInk fulfils the relevant provisions of Swiss and European legislation, subject to accurately defined deployment and printing regulations for this type of packaging.
