WILL WE HAVE “NORMAL” TIMES AGAIN? Dear customers and partners, Reading the daily news doesn’t give us the impression that we are living in a predictable world.

Notions such as migrant flows, the blocked Balkans route, aggressive money supply expansion or helicopter money can and are intended to disconcert us. On the other hand, when you read these lines, terms like “Panama Papers” are likely to have disappeared again.

How should we – as individuals, entrepreneurs, members of the workforce – respond to such factors? Should we be more cautious, circumspect, reserved? Should we postpone necessary investments because the future outlook is gloomy? Should we wait with the implementation of ideas because innovation is always also a risk? When is the right time to believe in a new technology?

If it has already proven itself, it is no longer new or useful for differentiation purposes. But as long as the technology is new, it also means higher risk.

In the past years, Wipf AG has repeatedly chosen a fast-track path, as regards both investments (see the article on capacity expansion) and technologies (digital printing). Our confidence in our underlying values and the traditional long-term perspective of the Wipf family have given us opportunities with respect to investments and process optimization to commit to a large and certainly also courageous step. All these efforts define our pursuit of an important objective: We want to enable you to harness your market potentials and remain successful in the long term with interesting and innovative packaging solutions.

New representative in Italy Wipf AG has regrouped in Italy since the beginning of the year. As a competent engineering partner, Landopack s.a.s. will locally distribute our products, especially our WICOVALVE® range.

Landopack s.a.s. has successfully established itself as a dealer for various packaging machinery manufacturers.

Our goal is to jointly strengthen our presence in the Italian market. We are convinced that Landopack s.a.s. is a highly competent representative and look forward to new business. Our ­in-house sales manager Gianfranco Gaffuri remains the contact person for the Italian market and will energetically support the new representative.

WOW – We Optimize Wipf The launch of the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) project in September 2012 pointed the way toward optimizing and standardizing our production processes.

Staff members were acquainted with methods to identify and systematically eliminate losses. Thanks to intensive teamwork, we were successful in different domains and in some areas boosted plant efficiency by as much as 20 percent. The production teams, for instance, carefully analyzed set up times and procedures to optimize key parameters with auxiliary means or process adjustments. Our logistics team accurately pinpointed the locations of materials and ancillaries and then optimized their positions, taking time, space, and distances into account. The procurement and planning team systematically identified and eliminated losses while ­simplifying and standardizing processes. After the successful certification of all TPM teams, a party for the entire staff took place in March.

Review: Tea & Coffee World Cup Poland At the Tea & Coffee World Cup, an international exhibition that took place in Krakow from 10 to 12 May 2016, Wipf AG presented the WICOVALVE® line alongside a number of interesting product innovations.

The Wipf highlight at the show was the biocompostable valve for coffee packaging.

At the stand, numerous visitors also informed themselves about innovations in production, such as digital printing tech-

nologies for flexible packaging. With short makeready times and defined-quantity film printing runs, they offer a host of personalization functions and give customers access to an extensive range of options. The highly interesting conversations with visitors were very delightful and inspiring.

Overall, the event was a positive experience and we look forward with excitement to new projects.

CAPACITY EXPANSION

Wipf AG adds manufacturing resources With the renewal of its machinery and the extension of the production hall, Wipf AG has decisively increased its capacity. The objective is to quickly respond to market requirements with a perceptibly greater degree of flexibility. Some 7 million Swiss francs were invested in a triplex lamination machine, a pouchmaking line, and a latest-generation automatic valve assembly line. The investment represents a further milestone for the company.

Apart from the significant capacity expansion achieved with the new generation of machines, manufacturing quality improvements based on modern production technologies are decisive advantages as well. The new high-speed pouchmaking line for standard 100-gram pet food packaging produces about 30,000 pouches per hour more than its predecessor model. With a web width of up to 1,300 mm, the triplex lamination machine is used for the production of ­triplex laminates. Thanks to its modular design, the new automatic valve assem-

bly offers advantages in processing 0 and 100 series WICOVALVEÂŽ. With the new line, the company can optimally handle the increased demand for valves, especially for coffee and dough applications.

The new equipment is operated in three shifts.

Given the continually growing demand for Wipf products, the long-established Swiss company has transitioned to modern manufacturing technologies by installing cutting-edge production resources while simultaneously demonstrating fresh momentum in the domain of innovation.

All exhaust air ducts and the edge trim extraction facility had to be repositioned prior to the start of construction.

Following the completion of the construction work, the installation of the new Triplex lamination system began in April 2016.

Convenience on the go with handle packs

Delicious soft-serve ice cream ranks among the best-liked treats in the summer. Originally, soft-serve was ­invented in the USA. Zuzwil-based P. + P. Brunschwiler Confiseriefabrikation manufactures soft-­serve powder. The individual varieties are packaged with our POLIALUVEL® laminate.

Chocolate maker Goldkenn is committed to its Swiss roots and labels its products with the Swiss Made attribute: it stands for know-how and the origin of all of its creations. As a Swiss packaging producer, we are proud to have been chosen to package the newly launched Goldkenn Mini’s Assorted.

Mondelēz International, a globally active food group, is now distributing its delicious Milka Lu and Mini Chips Ahoy in stand-up pouches at duty-free shops around the world. Wipf AG ­manufactures the packaging with various convenience features that make it easier and more practical to use.

P. + P. Brunschwiler Confiseriefabrikation is specialized in the production of softserve powder. Experienced food technicians developed two semi-finished products that can be processed into a velvety ice cream and a fruity sherbet. The result is convincing. Soft-serve is popular among consumers in every age group.

Thanks to its ­mobile “Soft Ice” outlets, the company has established itself as a welcome sponsor at sports tournaments and other spectator events throughout Switzerland.

The new delicious Pistacchio, Mocca, and Chocolate varieties are packaged in a POLIALUVEL® laminate. This high-quality laminate preserves the flavour of the product while reliably protecting it against UV and light. The packaging for the various varieties was printed in eight colours on a flexographic press.

Goldkenn is a pioneer in the duty-free market. At countless airports around the world, the praline-filled gold bars have been bestselling ambassadors of the Goldkenn brand for over 30 years. Wipf created a new stand-up pouch for Mini’s Assorted, a product debut in the G-Collection.

A three-ply POLIVEL® laminate was chosen to assure the best possible product protection level. This film optimally protects the chocolate against aroma loss, dehydration, and extrinsic odours.

A special facet of the aluminium-free packaging is the high-quality print result achieved with a 10-colour gravure press and using a special mat lacquer. It ­ensures the golden gloss effect. Downstream of the press, the film was converted on our ­latest-generation pouchmaking machine and enhanced with two starter notches as well as a double-track laser perforation.

It relies on our proprietary aluminium-free POLIVEL® MET film. The very good laminate bond and tear resistance assure the integrity of the stand-up pouch.

The eye-catching designs were printed in high resolution on a gravure press.

Thanks to a special gloss effect, the vivid motifs attract a lot of attention.

The starter notches and double laser perforation tracks make it very quick and easy to open without scissors or other implements. A handle makes the standup pouch easier and more convenient to carry.

Multichannel marketing campaigns for packaging Often, the packaging is the first aspect of a product that is seen and perceived by the customer. Promising marketing campaigns thanks to digital printing Marketing campaigns for flexible packaging are printed on digital presses. Because of its personalization flexibility, digital printing technology offers a broad spectrum of possibilities. Thanks to a contiguous digital workflow, the specific data of every single packing unit can be transmitted to the press. Individual packaging versions can be printed in specific quantities at the required time in one

production run (on demand). Since all press settings (such as colour profiles) are stored, setting up a job involves little effort. Digital presses require no plates, which eliminates the associated work and costs.
