Pastoral Letter & Church Meetings I have always had a bit of a regret that the word “not” is used in the Ten Commandments! Let me quickly put the record straight before someone misinterprets what I am writing! I’m not suggesting that we should all rush out and steal, murder, and commit adultery. My concern is the way Christianity is all too often interpreted as a “no” or a “don’t” religion. Be assured, I’m fully signed up for the Ten Commandments but I am concerned that too many folk associate Christianity with negatives rather than the incredibly positive life to be found in Christ. It’s not without significance that one of the greatest thorns in Jesus’ side were the Pharisees. They were the religious experts of their time who seemed to occupy themselves rebuking others for their failure in observing the highly complex religious regulations of their time. One would have assumed that the “religious” folk of that time would be Jesus’ natural allies. This was not the case. Jesus regularly clashed with these groups of people. He cautioned against being

judgemental, encouraging folk to consider the beam in their own eye before hastily pointing to the “speck” in others (Matt 7:1-4). In practice, it’s often much easier to be critical and negative than it is to demonstrate the positive. Indeed, negative talk towards another can be a wonderful diversionary tactic to distract folk from looking too closely at oneself! Christianity is not a negative faith. Jesus doesn’t preoccupy His ministry by telling people off. He invites people to walk His way: “I am the way. I am the truth and I am life.” (John 14:6). He speaks of the precious relationship between Himself and us: "I am the vine; you are the branches." (John 15:5). We are all precious to God that "even the very hairs on [our heads] are numbered." (Luke 12:7).The message of Jesus is clear: you matter. You’re not just an entry on a computer or in a directory. You are special. Perhaps Christians need to work harder at getting across the positive message of our faith. We need to celebrate the very special gifts and

insights which each person has received and how God deliberately distributes the talents around so that we all need each other. We need to ensure that our Christian communities truly demonstate Christ; that they are communities of welcome, support and pastoral care. Our churches don't exist to be communities in isolation but communities that engage for Christ with all the issues that challenge day to day living. The focus of the Gospel is not on the word “NO” but on “YES” as it is an invitation to embrace a positive life in Christ. After all, the Cross was followed by an empty tomb and a risen Lord who is alive today and has plans for each of us NOW.

BADENOCH AND STRATHSPEY POLICING REPORT Sgt Scott Dawson stated there was nothing further to add other that which had been included in the previously circulated the Badenoch and Strathspey Policing Report, other than that of the post of Traffic Warden was again to be re-advertised. He did ask AVCC whether they had any issued they were aware off, to which Willie McKenna advised that since the introduction of car parking charges by Forestry Commission, there was an issue with cars being park on the road verges in Glenmore. This issue was discussed and John Grierson asked Northern Constabulary to look at this road hazard issue. The issue of children and bike safety was also raised and it was agreed that Northern Constabulary would ask Aviemore Primary School to raise awareness of bike and road safety and it was remitted to John Grierson to write to Rona Smith at Aviemore Primary School with regards to this issue. BUSINESS a) MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MEETINGS i) Forestry Commission Car Parking Charges – John Grierson reported he had received a reply from Jack Mackay basically stating that although parking meters were new, parking charges have in place in the Glenmore area for a considerable time. This issue was again discussed and it was remitted to JG to reply detailing the concerns of road hazards and safety since parking charges implemented. ii) Scottish Water – John Grierson stated he has wrote to Scottish Water and he informed the AVCC that official opening of the new water treatment centre had been postponed. iii) Road Maintenance – John Grierson advised that he had passed the list to Richard Evans to which he had replied that they would be looking at this list and putting it into the budget for next year. John Grierson also advised that he had received

a reply from BEAR with regards to the road marking as the Granish junction and that these were in the budget for this year and that they would try and accelerate the marking. iv) Dog Fouling – No reply as yet received. v) Allt Dunie Windfarm – John Grierson advised members that he had attended the last meeting of the Kincraig Community Council where there was a presentation from Jennifer Gascoigne of RWE npower outlining the state of the application. The application is going to a public enquiry. b) NEW BUSINESS i) Community Council Election – John Grierson stated that since Bill Lobban’s election as a Councillor to Highland Council there was now a vacancy on AVCC and with only 4-elected members AVCC was below now below the required number. He advised that he has spoken with Sue Palmer, HC Ward Manager who will put in place the required notifications for election of further Community Councillors. ii) Community Council Planning Implementation Committee – John Grierson advised that the CNPA were looking how the Park could work better with Community Councils with regards to planning issues. The first meeting of this Committee was set for Wednesday 30th May at the Lecht Ski Centre. John Grierson stated he would be unable to attend however any future meetings would likely be set for evening time. - John iii) Planning Achantoul Pond Grierson reported that he had received a request from CNPA for an extension of the time allowed for hearing a planning application. Apparently a statutory consultee had not yet replied. After a brief discussion it was agreed unanimously that the request for an extension of time be agreed to. Remitted to JG to reply. iv) A9 Advertising - John Grierson advised that the signage at High Burnside had lost its appeal and that the offending sign was to be removed.

v)Badaguish Outdoor Centre (Wigwams) – After a brief discussion it was unanimously agreed not to object to the application to amend a condition of the original planning permission. Remitted to JG to reply. vi)Glenmore Notice Board – John Grierson updated the Community Council with regards to the planned notice board and that he had received a letter from Jack Mackay of Forestry Commission saying that the Forestry Commission are reviewing their signage at Glenmore and are intending putting up new interpretive signs. There will be an opportunity on the signs for community use. Jack MacKay suggested that the Community cold utilise the “information” section on the new signs. Remitted to JG to reply. vii) Allt Duine Wind Farm – John Grierson advised that Bill Lobban and Ian Malcolm had been attending the meetings to represent AVCC with regards to this proposal. As Bill Lobban would no longer be able to do this, another representative was needed. It was agreed that John Grierson would attend any future meetings. viii) Aviemore Brownies - John Grierson informed the Community Council that Aviemore Brownies had requested some financial assistance for a planned overnight trip to Edinburgh. It was unanimously agreed to support this with a contribution of £100. “ Parliament Blog ” In June, the Highlands welcomed his Holiness Dalai Lama to Inverness. The event was one of several public talks across the country to promote the view that personal and global transformation comes from the individual. I was extremely proud to see so many folk turning out for the event at Eden Court. In addition to the Dalai Lama’s visit this month, both houses of the UK parliament were very fortunate to welcome the leader of the Opposition in Burma, and recipient of the Nobel Peace prize, Aung San Suu Kyi to the UK.

Danny Alexander MP

It was the First Minister that pointed out that, technically at least, I was skiving. But then, so was he! Last Wednesday, he and I were not at Holyrood. We were in a meeting. He was in California and I was in Inverness. The meeting was a video conference, and the Inverness end of the conference, at which I was present, was held in Lifescan’s offices whilst Alex was north of San Francisco, at the offices of Johnson and Johnson, the owners of Lifescan. The occasion was the announcement of the decision of Johnson and Johnson to locate their global HQ for research and development in Inverness. Lifescan, as SpotLight readers will know, makes products to help those with diabetes manage their condition themselves. The company are constantly seeking further to enhance their products and this key crucial work will now be done in Fergus Ewing MSP Inverness.

venue

‘...worth a visit just to see its unusual architecture...’

The Universal Hall is one of the finest and most unusual venues in the north of Scotland. Set in the heart of the internationally famous ecovillage at Findhorn, the Hall also serves as a major public venue for touring theatre and music, comedy, dance and film. There are always family shows and events for children in its season of public events. Coming in Autumn 2012 are internationally renowned Scottish artists like Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham and the MacFalls Chamber Orchestra; theatre from Horse and Bamboo and the People’s Theatre (both offering great show for kids); modern dance from the David Hughes Dance Company; classical music from the Masayuki Kino and much, much more. See www.universalhall.co.uk or adverts and listings here in Spotlight for more details of upcoming public shows. The Hall has a charming café with outdoor terrace, The Blue Angel, open to the public seven days a week, and the building is well worth a visit just to see its unusual architecture the hand-carved stone fascia, the geodesic roof with alpine sedum providing a growing cover and glass lantern at the apex, and the imposing stain glass foyer at the front, Inside, have a look at the pentagonal auditorium where the supporting frame is made mostly of wood - unusual in this size of building - but

creating excellent acoustics for music and performance. (The Hall receives a double page listing in the Theatre’s Trust booklet “Scotland’s Theatre Architecture”) The Hall’s web pages provide information about the very latest events - events like films are added on a short notice. Besides print ads, there is also a twice-yearly brochure “The Good Gig Guide” which is available from the building, the café and various outlets like the Phoenix Stores and the Community Centre in Forres. Drop by for a coffee, for a look at the building or to book in for a show. Tickets are usually available for most things (except films which are pay on the door) from the Phoenix Stores (tel 01309 690110) near the entrance to the ecovillage site, or online at www.wegottickets.com/UniversalHall. There is a dance studio and a fully-functioning recording studio in the building - the dance studio is used for weekly classes in such things as yoga, street dance and children’s ballet. In addition, the main auditorium has been rented many times over the years for private events - weddings and celebrations of all kinds. For more information about events, or how to rent the Hall spaces, phone 01309 691170.

Chef’s Confidential Cinnamon Toasted Brioche, Local Berries & Ice Cream Serves 4 100g each Strawberries, Raspberries & Blackberries 4 Slices Brioche Bread 1tsp Ground Cinnamon 4 tbsp Caster Sugar mixed together with cinnamon Stock Syrup – For The Fruits 250g Caster Sugar 275ml Water 1 Vanilla Pod, split 1. Make stock syrup by bringing all ingredients to the boil and simmering for 7 minutes. Cool to room temperature. 2. Hull the strawberries and cut in half, cut blackberries sideways and leave the raspberries whole. 3. Fold fruit gently into stock syrup and chill for at least 2 hrs. 4. When ready to serve, dust both sides of the brioche with cinnamon sugar and grill on both sides until golden. 5. Place each slice of toast on serving plates and spoon over marinated fruits. 6. Serve with ice cream. Chef’s Note: We like to sprinkle some finely sliced mint and some black pepper over the fruit toasts, bringing a note of freshness and spice to the sweet local fruits. Enjoy!

Dreaming of... Jersey & Guernsey

Jersey is the largest and most southerly of the Channel Islands, yet it is only nine miles by five miles. With the best sunshine in the British Isles and direct flights departing Inverness and Aberdeen from June to September, what could be easier? Jersey has some of the best sandy beaches and bays in Britain. St Clements Bay offers beautiful stretches of fine sandy beaches and runs into Jersey’s capital, St Helier. The beach at St Ouen’s Bay stretches for five miles and is rarely crowded, and during the summer months this beach offers an array of water sports. St. Aubin’s Bay, is a stretch of beach from St Helier to the fishing port of St. Aubin. To its east stands Elizabeth Castle, a great historical site which is accessible either by foot at low tide or by the Castle ferry. The Castle has watched over Jersey’s seaway for over 300 years. One of the more popular beaches boasted by the island is St. Brelade’s Bay situated in a sheltered position on the south west of the island making it much warmer than some of the other bays. Nestling off the Normandy coast and only a short ferry crossing from Jersey’s St Helier port is Guernsey, the second largest of the Channel Islands. St Peter Port, the island’s capital, is a bustling harbour full of restaurants and boutiques. Guernsey is situated 30 miles from the French Coast, and it benefits from a much milder climate than we do in the UK. It is a rambler’s paradise with an abundance of wild flowers growing in the mild climate, coastal paths, sweeping sandy bays and wide open beaches. Don’t forget day trips are easily arranged to Jersey’s other neighbouring IslandsHerm, Sark & Alderney! With both islands easily reached with direct flights from your local airport visiting Jersey and Guernsey has never been easier.

music mania Elgin BID - Music Mania Saturday 25th August 2012, 10.30am – 5.00pm

Elgin BID is delighted to be hosting the 3rd Music Mania Event at Elgin Plainstones and around the City centre area, offering a fun filled day of music and entertainment for all the family. We are also proud that the event will support MFR Cash for Kids and hope to have a live MFR outside broadcast happening on the day (TBC).

adults with learning disabilities – who have been knitting the largest scarf that Elgin has ever seen, which will be on display on the day. We are also looking at securing the talents of local artists for the painting of a mural on the day on the frontage of one of the vacant premises in South Street.. ‘don’t miss seeing artists at work.’

Celebrating local talent we are delighted to have secured some fantastic bands including Be Like Pablo, Fortunate Sun, Max MacPherson Trio, Fat King George and Blair MacLeod.

As well as the day’s music and entertainment, there is the chance for 3 lucky winners to scoop prizes, which they can spend in one of the city centre retailers, if they successfully complete our musical treasure hunt.

Elgin BID Manager Jacqui Taylor said “This is set to be a really exciting day for all the family. We have some fantastic acts ready to entertain visitors to the town centre and the surrounding area.”
