The Editor

As summer draws to a close, I often look forward to seeing the incredible panoply of colours brought to us by the autumn leaves. From reds to browns, yellows and greens it is a sight to behold. Americans talk of the Aspen woodlands but we have just as stunning autumn scenery along the Moray Firth Coastline. Try stopping alongside one of the many fast flowing rivers and sucking in the views. It cannot be beaten!

Skip the palavers There is always somebody who wants to go further. There is usually someone who wants what is real and lasting. In Jerusalem, there was a man who wanted what Jesus Christ could give. He had a thirst for spiritual reality. Might that be you? Are you in that situation? I’ve just been with two men who thought they had everything. Each made a million, and their families and friends appeared to make life all right, and they were fit and healthy and strong. One day, and quite independent of each other, they realised there was one dimension missing. Back in Jerusalem, Nicodemus had seen Jesus perform miracles. He realised all this was for real and he became spiritually hungry and thirsty. He was one of the top theologians, and he was supposed to have answers for everyone, but he still had a lot to learn and he humbly recognised that. He was in a prominent position and had everything all neatly worked out – then Jesus Christ came along! One night when it was dark and when

Pastoral letter and Church Meetings he thought no one would see him he came to see Jesus. At least he made the effort and had the courage to go and have a talk. They spent some time together and we overhear part of their conversation in John Chapter 3, in the New Testament. It is worth a serious read, especially if you like listening into other people’s conversations. Jesus shook and disturbed his cosy intellectual academic world. It is not nice when that happens, even though in the long run it can prove to be the best moment of our life. He wanted to get into what Jesus was in. He didn’t understand it all. That may not be all that important to begin with. It is better to be in what is right and not understand it all, than know what it is all about and not be inside! Jesus began to speak some of the most important truths in the world. Nicodemus, your world needs such a radical change, that you need to be born again. Nicodemus, unless you are born again, you will not even be able to see the Kingdom of God, never mind enter it. Nicodemus, at the moment, you are on

the outside, and you know that you are on the outside. Have you ever felt like that? Notice how Jesus skips all the palavers, and gets right to the point. Jesus could have spent time counselling and discussing and debating, but no. Jesus does not tease, nor does He mislead, nor does He waste time. It all began when Nicodemus saw and heard Jesus. Something was triggered, giving him a restless mind. An interest started to grow. Questions arose in his heart. These questions do not go away. They have got to be satisfied. This man had been around the church of the day for years and had never been satisfied. Imagine being in church circles for 5 or 25 or 45 years, and being unsure and uncertain about the most vital issue of life. Sandy Shaw Nairn C hristian Fellowship

SpotLight Council News

extracts from the Draft minutes of the meeting of 28th 0f June 2011 of nairn community council

Matters Arising From Previous Minute Not OtherwiseOn Agenda Sandown Lands: c. cllr. youngson reported we are still awaiting a response from thc for a meeting with local members and Planning & Development to discuss the “Park” element of sandown. A96 / Sandown Farm Lane/Altonburn Road; still awaiting a site meeting with thc roads regarding the ‘rat run’ via sandown farm lane / altonburn road. must be waiting for the roadworks to finish so there isn’t a problem! Role of C.C.’s : a fairly lengthy discus-

sion took place regarding the role of c.c.’s, everyone felt that too much emphasis was being placed on Planning, which took up most of our time to the detriment of other community needs. c.cllr. noble expressed concern about the continued expansion with developments at Delnies; south of nairn without consideration being given to health/housing/schools/ and infrastructure. c.cllr mackie agreed but pointed out that under the current Planning law the Planning committee could only base their determinations on the application in front of them. c.cllr. noble feels we need to get a grip of the situation before it gets worse.

“ Parliament Blog ” autumn brings with it the main party conferences - traditionally a chance for mps, party members and journalists to crowd into out-of-season British seaside resorts and recall their former glories. It's nice to be by the sea - although, even at this time of year, the coast of the moray Firth strikes me as a good deal more tempting than the english Channel. politicians themselves have been a bit wary of venturing on to the beach since Neil Kinnock famously had a very close encounter of a watery kind while posing for photographs with his wife in Brighton. this year's liberal democrat event formed part of a slight trend against the seaside theme by heading inland to Birmingham. the experience of a conference is hectic - with a continuous stream of events, speeches and meetings in close succession over four or five days, often on a very wide range of different topics. But it brings a different atmosphere to Westminster and a welcome opportunity to explore and debate new ideas more freely than the day-to-day business of government sometimes allows. Within Scotland, the big party conferences often seem to be held by famous rivers rather than the seaside. With that in mind, I am very pleased that the Scottish lib dems will be returning to eden Court on the banks of the Ness next Spring. the event will bring a boost to local business and the associated media coverage can only raise the profile of the facilities which eden Court and the city have to offer. So now that Birmingham is behind us, I am looking forward to welcoming my colleagues home to the Highlands! Danny Alexander MP

page 10 - October 2011

CC Committee Reports:Planning/Environment:- c. cllr. youngson gave a resume of the local Planning applications. the main one being the former convalescent home which had been changed, and we have restated our objections to these proposals as we feel they are trying to remove more trees which are under a tPo. Roads/Community; a96 traffic lights are due to be trialled soon. We will need to monitor the effect on traffic on other roads, and the effect on the a96.

the mood of the times can best be summed up in a short and plaintive poem, by richard armour, entitled “money talks.” “that money talks, I’ll not deny, I heard it once, It said goodbye.” that said, there are a huge number of positives and good developments taking place throughout the land – last week I attended the launch of 240 new jobs in the Oil sector, in subsea work. this week, I shall attend the Oil and Gas Conference in aberdeen, where there is continued success. Indeed, though 38 billion barrels of oil have been extracted from Scottish waters, estimates suggest there may be another 24 billion to come! One of the exciting developments in that sector is called “eOr.” this stands for enhanced oil extraction. Basically, using improved engineering solutions, a greater proportion of the oil in a given oil field can be extracted than before. a further, possible, positive development for Scotland is called Carbon capture and storage. this would sequester carbon emitted, in the North sea disused fields, and this technology may be combined with eOr – so that the injection of compressed carbon can in turn enable more oil to be extracted. the economics of this are being considered, and some of the leading experts in the world work in Scottish universities. Some say that from these policies some 13,000 jobs could be created. So there are hints of rays of sunshine amidst the clouded economic horizon, and though I am no eric morecambe, I hope that I can bring you that sunshine sometime before the end of this parliamentary session.

recipe

Chef’s Confidential As the nights draw in there is a sense that winter is on the way and without being alarmist I thought I would talk about whisky and food this month, in particular sharing with you my recipe for Whisky Christmas Cake. This is a real family favourite during the festive period and now is the best time to make it and let it mature over the coming weeks. Whilst I am not one for putting the best single malts into the cake it is worth using a really good blended whisky that is full of character and flavour. My favourite for this recipe is Chivas Regal 12 year old, it has a lovely fruity and toffee aroma and when steeping the fruit in it brings out the most amazing flavours. Any good blended whisky can be used.

Whisky Christmas Cake Preheat the oven to 170°C (150°C fan oven) Gas Mark 3 Dried Fruit

350g

Ready to eat prunes

150g

Grated lemon rind and juice

1 lemon

Chivas Regal

150ml

Whisky Liqueur

30ml

Softened butter

225g

Ground Almonds

50g

Muscovado Sugar

225g

Large eggs

3

Wholemeal Self raising flour

225g

Mixed Spice

1.5 tsp

Cinnamon

1 tsp

Method 1. Soak the dried fruit, prunes and grated lemon rind in a bowl with the whisky and whisky liqueur. Soak at least overnight but preferably longer. 2. Grease and line the base and sides of an 20.5com round cake tine, with a removeable base. Use a double thickness of baking parchment. Wrap a double thickness of brown parcel paper around the outside of the tin and secure with string. 3. Using an electric hand mixer beat together the soft butter and sugar. Add the eggs a little at a time and continue beating until smooth. Mix the flour and spices together and using a large metal spoon add gradually to the egg and butter mixture. Finally add the ground almonds. 4. Place half the soaked fruit into a food processor and pulse to a puree. Add this and the rest of the fruit to the rest of the mix and combine well. 5. Spoon into the cake tin and place in the oven on a centre shelf, for 2 .25 to 2.75 hours. 6. Remove from the oven after the minimum cooking time and test using a skewer to see if cooked. The skewer should come out clean. If it doesn't place back in the oven and check after a further 15-20mins. If the cake starts to look quite dark on the top, cover with brown paper with a whole cut in the middle to prevent it getting too discoloured. 7. When cooked, allow the cake to cool in the tin before removing the lining paper. If storing for Christmas then leave the lining paper on, cover with foil and finally cling film and store in a cool dry cupboard until you are ready to decorate.

Dreaming of... ...a Skiing Holiday

At this time of year our minds turn to that wonderful winter pastime – the skiing holiday. Europe has become closer and closer with dedicated flights from Scottish airports, mainly Edinburgh and Glasgow with some from Aberdeen. A good skiing holiday is a total change to your normal routines, but it is not a lazy option – skiing or snowboarding use muscles that we don't otherwise use every day, and although exhilarating it can be hard work to ski all day every day for a week or a fortnight. It is a great advantage to be able to test your interest in skiing at a Scottish resort – if you like it you can continue to use the local facilities at weekends but it is tempting to go to the greater snow fields of Europe, and then the ultimate treat is in North America and Canada. In Europe the popular countries are France, Switzerland and Austria. French resorts tend to be high such as Tignes (the highest in France) or Chamonix which is a small French industrial town surrounded by three clear skiing areas. Swiss resorts tend to be picturesque and Alpine-like, including Verbier and Zermatt – Verbier is high with good skiing, and is a mecca for the British if that is what you want, whereas Zermatt has retained its charm as a Swiss-style resort. Austria, although not the highest resorts, offers the most charming and stylised such as Kitzbuhel and St Anton. The west coast of Canada has wonderful skiing in Banff, Lake Louise and Whistler, where the winter Olympics were held in 2010. Whistler offers so much choice there are even 2 mountains to choose from, both offering guides to show you round. The ski lifts are generally larger and wider than European ones, as are the pistes, and the mountain restaurants are enormous and modern, but very efficient. The ski police keep you on your toes. The final but very important consideration is the cost of your skiing holiday. The key components are your flights, your accommodation, your food and drink bills, your equipment hire (skis or snowboard and boots), and your lift passes, but these can range enormously in price and there are always some very good deals around. Switzerland is likely to feel the most expensive this season for the British due to the current very strong Swiss Franc.

Since losing my funding for employing someone earlier this year, I now don’t have a specific paid driver to take me to performances, so it has been a case of relying on the goodwill of family and friends. When we arrive at the wedding venue I usually need help to set up my harp and Amplifier. During the ceremony I also need verbal prompts when it’s the right moment to play. It’s a nerve-wracking but enjoyable experience, being a part of a couples’ special day.

DON’T GET THE WRONG IDEA! Men have many strange, un-scriptural ideas about what it takes to be forgiven and be at peace with God. WHO TOLD YOU THAT...all you have to do is live a good life and God will then accept you? Does God say that your best is good enough for you to be acceptable to Him? God’s viewpoint is “There is none righteous, no, not one.” Romans 3:10. Why is this true? God states, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. God cannot accept you because you have already sinned. WHO TOLD YOU THAT... being a member of a church would get you into Heaven? To get into Heaven God must deal with your sin problem. Joining a church will not save you. You need forgiveness and cleansing so that God can associate with you. This change is a spiritual birth where God causes a brandnew spiritual nature to live in you. The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” II Corinthians 5:17. To be forgiven and associate with God you need to be born again. “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3.

WHO TOLD YOU THAT.... obeying God’s law will save you? It is too late. God’s Word states, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” James 2: 10. Every one of us has broken at least one of God’s laws. WHO TOLD YOU THAT... loving every one has anything to do with being saved? This is commendable, however we are separated from God because of our sin nature. Even a sinful person can be loving, however he is stiIl sinful until God removes the stain in Christ.

Men have many strange, un-scriptural ideas about what it takes to be forgiven and be at peace with God. That we can be forgiven and enter a peaceful relationship with God is a matter of scriptural record. Romans 5: I states, “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Have you

found forgiveness and peace with God, dear reader?

What must you do to be saved? Go to God in prayer and acknowledge that you are a sinner and need His help. Understand that Jesus Christ died on the Cross to pay God’s penalty for your sins. Ask WHO TOLD YOU THAT ... baptism will save God to accept this death on your behalf. Invite you? Bible baptism has nothing to do with Jesus Christ into your life as your Lord and Saviour, washing away sin, which is our problem before a to live and reign within you. I urge you to turn holy God. The Apostle Peter wrote that baptism to God now, that you may be saved. is, “Not the putting away of the filth of the flesh...” I Peter 3:21. Baptism with water is the vivid You can be saved today if you will come to God symbol of the changed life of one who has a and accept His sacrifice for you. conscience at peace with God through faith in Christ.
