Bed in Summer

In winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle-light. In summer, quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see The birds still hopping on the tree, Or hear the grown-up people's feet Still going past me in the street. And does it not seem hard to you, When all the sky is clear and blue, And I should like so much to play, To have to go to bed by day? Robert Louis Stevenson

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings I remember years ago in boxing. I had 25 semi-professional fights all knock outs. Someone once asked me, why did you give it up? I said, I got fed up getting knocked out all the time. Seriously I did box, and I boxed a lot on many occasion where it did afford a tremendous amount of experience to reflect upon. What I did find out from the boxing was that there a serious side to life, and that you had to defend yourself at all times. That boxing wasn’t just about crash, bang and wallop, but it taught you discipline, it gave you courage, and above all else it gave you stamina, and a thing I call stickability. In those days there was no real secret to boxing except discipline and hard work, stamina and listening to your corner man, where experience was the most crucial if not the most vital thing that you could put into your game. In other words you needed to know or have experience. It was even greater when you found the likes of Dick McTaggart or Willie Burns, in your

corner, both Scottish and international champions, names of bygone days. Dick was always at your side, always showing you the ropes, and on many occasions talking you to death, where Willie never said a word, just listened and watched. It wasn’t so much the big things they taught, that were important, but the small things. A step here or there, how to twist your wrist, a hook, upper cut, an inch is just as big as a mile. If you’re going to miss, you’d be as well missing by a mile. St Paul knew his boxing, and in 1 Corinthians 15, he tells us to stand firm, and let nothing move us, and always give yourself fully to the work of the Lord, because you know your labour is not in vain ( 1 Cor 15. 58). Another great thing they taught was that experience doesn’t come by itself, nor does old age, nor does it come standing around doing nothing because it’s not something you would recommend to anyone standing in the ring getting their head knocked off. The thing they taught was all about

passing on the knowledge, and what made a good boxer was that you had to learn on your feet, and as Jesus said, (Matt 7.7) Ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened. St Paul was always on the move and in many ways and, in order to learn how to be successful, which he was, he first had to learn how to deal with failure. I can remember it still, we would often lose and it wasn’t because we were not taught properly, but it was because that when we got into the fight we would do our own thing and forget one important thing to ask, and to ask someone who had already been there before us and knew the ropes. For, it is the only way to learn. “Ask and it will be given unto you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened unto you.”

Parliament Blog & Tide Times On a recent visit to the Scottish Borders, I saw the impressive Leaderfoot Railway Viaduct which carried passengers until 1948 and freight until 1965, on the iconic Waverley Line, south from Edinburgh Against the odds, spirited campaigning saved the Kyle and Far North lines from Dr Beeching’s brutal rail closures in the 1960s. Imagine if other routes had been spared, what an iconic array of railway lines we could have had across the North; from Oban to Ballachulish to Forres to Aviemore. Now, even the modest reinstatement of some double track near Kirkhill would make a great difference to travel north of Inverness. The hugely successful Border Rail Line shows what can be done by reopening lines. Let’s hope there’s more reopenings to come.

John Finnie MSP

This government is clear that the people of Scotland should get the chance to decide their future. That is why the First Minister set out proposals to protect Scotland's interests against the impact of Brexit, but to set up a Citizens' Assembly to ensure that people get their say on what the future should be. But that does not mean we are ignoring the present. We are getting on every day with doing all that people expect us to and more. So, for farmers and crofters I have made sure that we provided CAP payments in advance through loan schemes for LFASS and basic payments and we are now making the actual payments, ahead of schedule. We have just completed the consultation on legislating to be a good food nation. We have committed to spending the remaining funds for maritime and fisheries projects on small harbour repairs, improving infrastructure and facilities that local communities will benefit from. Work continues to roll out more fibre broadband, and to dual the A9, to build more houses, and to deliver free early learning to all 3 and 4 year olds. It all stands in stark contrast to the paralysis enveloping Westminster as it fails to deliver Brexit and indeed, anything else.

‘Summer and, in particular, the summer holidays always reminds me of how lucky we are to live in the Highlands of Scotland. From the breath taking views that are on our door step, to the many local and independent businesses who thrive during our tourist season, it’s not hard to feel a real sense of gratitude for our little corner of the world. Whether it’s stopping off at James’ Coffee Shop in Nairn for an ice cream; picking up flowers for the garden from the Grassroots Garden Shop in Kingussie, camping at the Loch Ness Campsite in Foyers or simply taking a stroll through the Ness Islands, we’re never short of spectacular sights to enjoy and I look forward to enjoying these sights and more over the coming months’.

SpotLIGHT Events

Forres Highland Games 2019 A Great Day Out For All Also at the Forres Highland Games, visitors can enjoy craft and artisan food stalls, fairground attractions, a beer tent and food outlets. There is Highland dancing, solo piping and massed pipe bands and chanter competition.

A traditional Highland Games with fun for all the family.. Set in the stunning grounds of Forres’ Grant Park the Forres Highland Games offers a fun afternoon for all the family.

Unique to the Forres Games is the Message Bike Race where spectators can turn participant and race the field on an old traditional message bike in hope of lifting the winner’s trophy!

From caber tossing to the hammer throw, long jump, high jump and more, the Forres Highland Games will provide you with a traditional Scottish experience. Games Day commences with a Pipe Band Procession through the centre of the Moray town before the Games’ flag is raised above the arena.

www.forreshighlandgames.com or find us on Facebook and Twitter.

The Chieftain Opening this year’s event is Chieftain John Channon. John is no stranger to the Forres Highland Games and was once pitted against Scotland’s high jump champion and took part in many sprint events over the years.

SATURDAY 6TH JULY 2019 GRANT PARK, FORRES 12.30pm START Under U.K.A S.A.L & S.C.U rules

He said he was honoured to have been chosen for the Forres Highland Games which will take place in Grant Park on July 6, but admitted he will miss playing with the band on the day which last year won the trophy for deportment and dress. John who lives in Dyke said: “I couldn’t believe it when I got the letter. I kept it to myself for a while and when I eventually did tell the band, they of course all already knew. The worst kept secret. John added: “I really do consider this a great honour and I am really looking forward to the day and being able to meet the stallholders, visitors, those involved in organising the Games, the judges and adjudicators and of course the competitors. It’s a great day out and I am thrilled to be this year’s Chieftain.

SpotLIGHT Garden

Red Thread (Yellow Be Aware Warning) ! We often have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed. Clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year. I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society).

For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per month, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk.
