A BOAT beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily In an evening of July Children three that nestle near, Eager eye and willing ear, Pleased a simple tale to hear Long has paled that sunny sky: Echoes fade and memories die: Autumn frosts have slain July. Still she haunts me, phantomwise, Alice moving under skies Never seen by waking eyes. Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near. In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as the summers die: Ever drifting down the stream -Lingering in the golden dream Life, what is it but a dream? A poem by Lewis Carrol

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS How to have a good summer holiday Joyce Huggett writes - Relax! Laze on the beach! Curl up with a good book! Go sight-seeing or swimming, walking or whatever helps you to unwind. Holy days and holidays begin here. But be aware that you are not relaxing alone. Jesus is relaxing with you. He is the One who is inviting you to unwind, to let the pressures melt away, to rest: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 Jesus first gave this invitation to his disciples when they had returned from a busy, successful mission. They may well have been both excited by the way God had used them and exhausted as they had given themselves to be used in his service. The pace of life most people live is exhausting. The disciples were tired too. Jesus knew this. It is as though he were saying, "You've experienced the elation of being used by me, now come apart and be with me. Rest with me and in me. Let me relax in you!" In other words, he was teaching them the necessity of living the kind of balanced life that he himself lived: of establishing the rhythm which we also observe in nature. The sea ebbs and flows, the moon waxes and wanes, the

sun rises and sets. Growth in nature is followed by a fallow period. Jesus, similarly, punctuated times of intense activity by times of solitude and stillness. He encourages us to learn the value of such rhythm: to remember that, because we are human beings and not human doings, activity must be tempered by periods of "just being". Resting. As you rest, try to make sense of this unpunctuated sentence: Be aware that Jesus is with you wherever you are acknowledge his invitation come and rest respond to that invitation by recalling anything which threatens to prevent you from resting conscious that Jesus is with you hand these things over to him. Reflect for a few moments on the fact that life without pauses and stopping places can be as meaningless as a sentence without commas and full stops. So …. A Holiday Project - Punctuate the words you have just puzzled over and then re-read them - now that commas cause you to pause and full stops bring you to a halt. Then read on, responding to what you are reading: Be aware that Jesus is with you wherever you are. Acknowledge his invitation: "Come. . . and rest." Respond to that invitation by

recalling anything which threatens to prevent you from resting. Conscious that Jesus is with you, hand these things over to him. Do what Peter suggests: "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). As much as you are able, leave all that threatens your peace of mind in those hands which created the universe. You might like to picture the Creator's hands, to imagine they are being stretched out to you. Place into them the situations and people you are concerned about. When you have done that, your hands will be empty. Stretch them out to God, asking him to fill them with good things this holiday. Today. Now. A Prayer Just as a sentence makes far more sense when it is well punctuated, so our life makes far more sense when we give ourselves times of stillness. So for your prayer, simply become as still as you can. Then listen to Jesus' promise: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you." PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES It is just over a year since I became your MP and it has certainly been a busy year. Coincidentlly, this first year anniversary coincided with the opening of my new constituency office. It was heart-warming to see a full cross section of people from across the constituency coming to the official opening. People from all walks of life: businesses, councillors, agencies, schools and citizens joined my team and I. I felt it was important to be located in the heart of the city, but we’ve already shown that we’re committed to making sure that my team and I are available and active in all parts of the constituency. We’ll carry on the hard work of the past year by continuing to get out and about, to visit people, to hold regular surgeries, including mobile surgeries, throughout the length and breadth of Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey.

"Oh, and Mr Ewing when coming to meet the First Minister at Bute House - enter by the front door." That message from Nicola Sturgeon’s office let me understand that I might be in for some good news! And indeed I was delighted to be appointed as her Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Connectivity. After 9 years as a junior Minister it is a privilege to step up to a Cabinet post. Sorting out the CAP Payment IT problems is my first challenge but I hope to move on to how working together we can collectively grow the rural economy. I am therefore keen to hear from "Spotlight" readers who have a part to play and we must deliver superfast broadband by 2021 or else I should be banished to the back benches!! Fergus Ewing MSP

Nairnshire Farming Society Nairn Show 2016 Fun for all !the

The Nairnshire Farming Society is holding its 218th Annual Show on Saturday the 30th of July at Kinnudie Farm Auldearn.

Nairn Show will have something for everyone with an excellent food fair, quality trade stands, a full and varied programme of afternoon entertainment and an excellent display of livestock in the cattle, sheep and horse sections. This year’s show is shaping up to be a very attractive and fun-filled day for all the family and we are hoping for a good crowd. Car parking is to be free this year whilst admission charges are held at £10 per Adult, £5 per concession and secondary school child, £1 per primary child, and pre-school children having free admission. Our charges are set at a level to cover the substantial set up costs associated with the show and also to enable the society to make donations to local clubs and charities. Visitors will also be treated to a varied line up of trade stands both on the field and under canvas in the Food and Craft Fairs which will offer all kinds of merchandise including local produce and fancy goods as well as the very latest agricultural machinery. The Food Fair will again include cookery demonstrations throughout the day by various providers in a dedicated kitchen area.

Family

There will also be a display of vintage tractors and machinery, a range of catering facilities, including the return of a public catering marquee and a licensed bar. As ever the marquee competitions will be highy competitive and no doubt will produce a wonderful display of horticulture, wine, honey, baking, produce and handicrafts. Main Ring entertainment will include visits by Ringside Lurchers and Nairn and District Pipe Band. It will also feature a Vintage Tractor Parade, Horse and Carriage Display, The Penguin’s Tuxedo Street Band, Livestock Parades and Children’s races. Scotty’s Circus Workshop will be in attendance providing entertainment for our younger visitors. Horse Show Jumping will also take place in a separate arena and also in the main ring later in the day. The Nairn Show website, www.nairnshow.org.uk, will be updated regularly between now and show day to give the most up to date information regarding the show. The day will be rounded off with a Marquee Dance in the Showfield from 9pm to 1am with dancing to music by BIRO. Admission is open to persons aged 16 and over with a wristband scheme and requirement for ID in place.

HOPEMAN GALA 2016 July 15th – 23rd Dear Friends, Neighbours and Visitors, We would like to cordially invite you to Hopeman Gala 2016, our 42nd year of running this special 8-day event. As usual, it marks the culmination of months of planning and fundraising by an extremely dedicated team of volunteers who form the Gala Committee. It could not happen, though, were it not for the huge amount of community spirit in the Village. We are so thankful to the churches, shops, pubs and businesses that continuously support us. We are also extremely grateful to all the people who dedicate their time to help during the week, whether it be serving teas, baking cakes, setting quiz questions, playing songs or even tent sitting. Your help is very much appreciated: thank you. Community spirit very much underpins the theme of the Gala this year, particularly as we try to link generations across the Village. Our showcase event this year is the ABBA Tribute Night on 16th July. Tickets are available now at shops in the Village for ÂŁ10 per person: it promises to be a fun night for all. Tickets for Soup and Sweet, Variety Show, Tombola and Craft Sessions will be on sale at the Memorial Hall on 2nd and 9th July - 10am to 12:30pm We hope that Gala 16 will have something to offer DOO DJH JURXSV DQG IDPLOLHV ,I \RX¡UH LQ D SRVLWLRQ where your own family has already flown the nest, WKHQ SOHDVH IHHO IUHH WR ÂśFRPH DZD LQ ¡ KDYH D EOHWKHU and adopt a family for the hour. Forres Highland Games 2016

Tom Logie - Chieftain 2016 Forres Highland Games, an annual celebration of traditional Scottish sport, music and entertainment, takes place on Saturday 9th July 2016 in Grant Park in Forres. Proceedings get under way at 12.30 pm with the Opening Ceremony.

Bands marching around the arena to the skirl o the pipes and swish o’ the kilts. A sight and sound not to be missed and one for the photo album.

The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain, Mr Tom Logie, a retired local businessman, Forres Heritage Trust leading light and Burgess of the Royal Burgh of Forres. Tom has supported the Games over more than two decades.

Staging the 88th annual Forres Highland Games is only possible through the dedication of the unpaid Games Committee, volunteer judges and local helpers, and the loyal support and generosity of local benefactors and businesses.

The best of track and field athletes, the “heavies, highland dancers, pipers, grass track cyclists and pipe bands will compete and entertain the spectators in what is sure to be a colourful and enjoyable Scottish highland gathering.

A classical summer celebration of Scottish culture.

There are numerous displays and trade stands, as well as hot and cold food, ice cream and a licenced beer tent.

“An exquisite dining experience!” The Drouthy Cobbler have added another string to their already impressive bow - a pop-up restaurant upstairs on Saturday nights only! For those of you looking for a refined culinary experience, look no further. On arrival the bar area buzzed with excited energy and was comfortably full of relaxed, happy faces and then we were taken upstairs where the dramatic difference in decor and atmosphere was stunningly breathtaking. In contrast to the earthy, cave-like feel of the bar downstairs, the restaurant was all black with white linen, shiny cutlery, crystal clear glasses and a stylish bar. The soft music and low lighting made you feel like you were stepping into another world. Once seated we were offered water for the table and a selection of delicious breads. The staff cannot be faulted - upstairs or down - they present a friendly and upbeat attitude, communicate specials, make menu recommendations and listen well to customer orders. They are always happy to help and nothing is too much effort. Happy staff will always go the extra mile. There is a set, 3 course menu with the option of having only 2 courses and is different every time. Our selection that night was sublime. I started with Beef tartare, slow cooked egg yolk, toasted brioche and brie fondue and it was truly remarkable, perfect actually! I could've had seconds which is more a reflection on the otherworldly taste than the portion size. My husband had Spiced Orkney crab cakes, tomato & sweetcorn salsa with baby herb salad and he was equally as delighted with his taste sensation. For the main course, I decided to go with Seared tuna loin, olives, fine beans, sun dried tomatoes, jersey royals & sauce gribiche - a delightful feast for the eyes and equally as exquisite on the tastebuds! My other half was spoiled with Slow cooked Clash farm pork belly, crispy polenta, chickpea cassoulet, spinach & Stornoway black pudding - all the things that ring his bells! Dessert seemed too much to tackle alone as we were both sated, but it would've been rude not to - right? We decided to share and were recommended the Chocolate blondie with peanut butter sauce - it was served with vanilla ice cream and we were glad we 'made space' The dishes were executed perfectly both to look at and taste. I know I sound like I'm gushing, but with good cause. I'm competent in the kitchen so when I go out I love to eat something I couldn't or wouldn't make myself and this was truly a gastronomic sensation! Oh, I forgot to mention the expansive array of drinks - but we'll leave that for another time! A review by Jeff & Tamsyn - June 16
