Pastoral letter and Church Meetings Did you manage to get to bed at all last night? Maybe, given the time of year some might have to say ‘No!’ If not, I’m sure you did the night before! It’s hard to go very long without sleep after all! Did you manage something to eat yet today? Even a cup of tea or coffee? If not, I’m sure you managed something yesterday. It’s hard to go very long without food after all! The point is that, however busy our lives are, we make time for the priorities. You could be rushed off your feet all day long, but somewhere along the way there are things that just have to be done no matter how busy you are; whether it’s eating, sleeping, showering, going to the toilet – when you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go! At any given moment it’s a question of priorities, and we all learn to prioritise. I often bump into folk who tell me they haven’t got time to come to church. In their own mind they have a reasonable excuse. They’re so busy the rest of the week that Sunday is catch-up day. It’s the only chance for a long lie since they’ve got work or school or whatever all week. It’s the only chance to be with family or friends as they all have busy
lives too and there’s no other time to be together. I never disbelieve such stories – in fact, I’m sure there’s a great degree of truth in them all. But something about it all still niggles and doesn’t sit quite right with me. And, in the end, I think it just comes back to that question of priorities. The bottom line is that, if worshipping God is a priority in your life you will find the time to do it. I know, of course, that some folk simply can’t get out to church for reasons of health, infirmity, age, etc, but I’m not talking about such reasons here. I’m meaning now those who can but who don’t consider it a priority. It’s not a matter of finding the time, it’s a matter of making the time. I know too that some say, ‘I can worship God just as easily at home as in a church’ and I accept there is a certain truth there – God is not limited at all and he encourages us to approach him anywhere and at any time. I know churches are flawed, and full of flawed characters, but Jesus knew that better than anyone and he still made it his business to be at public worship on the Sabbath.

If we are serious about knowing God and wanting his blessing on our lives, and serious about wanting him to acknowledge us as one of his own on the day we finally meet him face-to-face, we will make sure that our priorities are in line with his own wise priorities. One of his apostles was inspired to write, ‘Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching’ (Hebrews 10:25). The way to be encouraged in your faith, he says, is to keep on meeting with God’s people – not ploughing on in splendid isolation. And every faithful churchgoer knows the discouragement of seeing only a few out in church when they know there could be and should be so many more. Put me first, says God, and the rest of your life will fall into place after that. What better time than New Year to get your own spiritual priorities right, and to encourage the cause of Christ at the same time?! Happy New Year! Murdo MacLeod (Nairn Free Church)

Community Council News ExTrACTS frOM THE DrAfT MINuTES Of THE MEETING Of 23rD Of NOvEMBEr 2011 Of NAIrN WEST COMMuNITY COuNCIL
Mrs Clark announced the results of the election and welcomed returning community councillors and new members. Apologies were given for Mr George Mackay and Councillor Graham Marsden. Copies of the constitution, relevant information on training, funding and advice available to community councils were distributed. Mrs Clark conducted the election of the Chairman of Nairn West Community Council. rosemary Young was nominated by BS and seconded by SA. Mrs Clark congratulated Ms Young on her election and wished all NWCC community councillors well in their four years as councillors. NWCC Chairman, rosemary Young was delighted that Nairn West residents returned 464 election ballot papers, 4 were spoiled, 460 actual returns giving a percentage of 49.84, amounting to an excellent result. rY felt it most gratifying to have that number of candidates standing, and felt that NWCC had highlighted some issues that needed to be addressed and looked forward to the coming four years. rY voiced the opinion of those present in thanking Mrs Clark for all her help and advice which had been invaluable to NWCC. Treasurer’s Report and Handover rY thanked Gv for excellent job as Treasurer. Graham vine initially resurrected NWCC, had been the main ‘backbone’ working tirelessly for NWCC, but sadly was not re-elected. rY expressed admiration for the grace in which Gv had accepted this decision and looked forward to hearing from Gv at future meetings. Gv wished his successor George Mackay all the best, and reported that the audited balance of 2010/2011 was £2,997.47 and that after expenditure of advertising, community centre rental, secretary honorarium, CC stationery expenses, the balance was £2,514.88. SA and rY remain as signatories, a new signatory to be appointed.

Nairnshire Partnership BS reported on the Nairnshire Partnership meeting which met on 21 November. It is a multi-bodied partnership between the voluntary and private sectors and public agencies, and was hosted by William Gilfillan from Highland Council. representatives of the varying groups came together to think, talk and identify priorities to focus on. This workshop raised as many questions as answers, main topic being the evolution of town and role of Nairnshire Partnership in aiding the delivery of outcomes. BS commented that no surprise, that the Town centre was top of the Agenda at the Nairnshire Partnership meeting, the old ways of doing things is no longer possible and that funding and schemes are available even in this current economic climate. BS was concerned about the management of the Common Good fund and how assets of the Town are run and hoped that engaging with communities more actively would bear fruit. Town Centre and NICE NICE had public meeting and had support of all three Community Councils discussing their contribution to planning process of Nairn Town Centre. NICE is moving forward to the future role of reconstituting development trust. NICE, an influential channel for Nairn residents views and Community Councils, would continue to link with NICE membership. Current Local Planning Matters Bus Station rY commented that although Bus Station development not strictly in ‘our patch’ that all planning has impact for NWCC residents, NWCC was in agreement with Suburban and had written to planning indicating possible changes to present plans. GH Johnston (builders for development) had promised updated plans. However NWCC still have not received them. Graham Kerr questioned what was rush to build, though development was improve-

ment on current structure, objected to four stories high as not in keeping with surrounding structures. rY recalled that roger Milton of Auldearn CC had funds in place and was working towards converting bus station into indoor sports arena for youth, and was disappointed that this application was then put forward, scrapping this idea which could have linked into the current sports club close by. BS mentioned that residents could debate size, colour of rendering and height, or future planning framework be a joined up plan that included the co-op site, council site and bus station. BS commented that Highland Council planners appeared to accept town centre as part of Inner Moray firth and the updated Nairn Local plan, and was surprised that this application stood alone Streetscape and Lighting There followed a discussion regarding Sainsbury's money and how it was being spent, comments on the streetscape which now included upgrading of the lighting system, including CCTv which Ian Bain commented was of prime importance and should be upgraded. Louise Clark commented that CCTv would extend off the High Street into the vennels, and that with the introduction of 'shopfront scheme' businesses were encouraged to apply for up to £2,500 for painting, new doors, restoration, guttering, disabled access and awnings. There have been 20 applications so far. rY felt there should be a by-law to keep properties in good condition. However the Nairn fund had tried in the past but was unsuccessful in this endeavour. Any Other Business Street Lighting experiments Louise Clark commented that the proposed street lighting cutbacks in Broadhill had since been cancelled. There had been dimming of lights in Manse road, Seafield Gardens and after midnight and that this had been without comment and produced a saving.

Parliament Blog & Tides “ Parliament Blog â€? For the young ones, Christmas is a time of joy and innocence and maybe for adults a time when we can see the world through their young eyes and minds. I have been hugely impressed by the quality of young people that I have met when visiting various businesses, schools and universities, and all of us want and need to do more to help them achieve their potential. The news that the Beechwood campus at Inverness has received funding of up to ÂŁ51 million is great news for the North, so many more young people here will be able to pursue their education to that level locally. Building also on apprenticeships and training is a continuing area where we are doing much more, but need to do more still. 2011 was an exciting and eventful year, and 2012 promises to be no less so. I think it is time for us all to focus on what we can do for the better, especially those of us in Government. So, I will try over the remainder of the winter period to listen to the Ink Spots (remember them?) “eliminate the negativeâ€? and focus on the positive for the year ahead. Let me wish all the readers of “Spotlightâ€? a good new year.

Inverness gave a great welcome to the Highlanders, 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, at the start of December as they marched through the city centre to mark their return from a 6 month tour of duty in Afghanistan. I was pleased to be able to represent the UK Government the following day at RAF Kinloss to see '4 SCOTS' receive their new colours from the Duke of Edinburgh. Both occasions gave local people and service families a chance to recognise the professionalism of our troops, to celebrate their return and to thank them for the difficult and dangerous work they have been doing. The happiness of the occasion was mixed with sadness at the loss of Corporal Michael Pike and Highlander Scott McLaren, both of whom served with great distinction. A complex but important mission to bring lasting security to the people of Afghanistan is not yet at its end - so, as we welcome the Highlanders home, we also think of members of '3 SCOTS', the Black Watch, who relieved them in Helmand, and their families. Those who serve in our armed forces make an extraordinary sacrifice - and being apart from their families at this time of year is only a small part of it. I know that having the support of our community during a difficult time means a lot to them. I hope Spotlight readers have had a good Christmas – and wish you a very peaceful and happy New Year.

Chef’s Confidential Chocolate and Berry Roulade Ingredients 150g Caster Sugar 6 large eggs 50g Cocoa Powder 500g mixed frozen fruit (thawed) 50ml Sloe Gin 250ml Double Cream 1 tablespoon Caster Sugar 1 heaped teaspoon of Ground Arrowroot Icing sugar for dusting 1 x 27cm x 22cm baking tin / swiss roll tin 2cm deep baking parchment 1.Lightly grease the baking tin and line with the baking parchment 2.Using two bowls separate the eggs with the whites in one bowl and the yolks in another. Whisk the egg yolks with an electric whisk until they start to thicken. Add the caster sugar and beat until fully mixed. Stir in the cocoa powder. Wash and dry thoroughly the electric beaters. 3.In the separate bowl beat the egg whites until they stand in soft peaks. Fold gently in to the chocolate mixture. 4.Pour in to the lined baking tin and bake in the centre of a preheated oven at 180°C for 20 minutes until it has risen and springy to touch. Remove from the oven and leave in the tin until completely cooled. 5.Place the thawed frozen fruit into a sieve and strain the juice in to a bowl. Place the fruit and one tablespoon of the juices in to a pan with the Sloe Gin and one tablespoon of caster sugar, and heat to simmering point. Mix the Ground Arrowroot with a little of the reserved fruit juice to a paste before stirring in to the fruit mixture to thicken. Allow to cool completely. 6.Place a sheet of greaseproof or baking parchment on to a clean dry service and dust with icing sugar. Turn out the chocolate roulade on to this, and carefully peel off the baking parchment. 7.Spoon the fruit mixture on to the chocolate roulade in a thin layer. Whip the cream to form soft peaks and spoon over the fruit mixture. 8.Roll up the roulade as tightly as you can and place on a serving dish. Chill until you are ready to serve. Don't worry if it cracks as this adds to character of the dish. For a really decadent finish, drizzle melted chocolate over the roulade! Penny Ellis, Owner Knockomie Hotel, Forres tel: 01309 673146

Great Tit
One of the beauties of birdwatching is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home, especially at this time of year when the temperatures drop and snow covers the ground. Any bird seed that is put out will be a magnet for any birds in the area. Two of the most common species to visit your bird table and feeders are the Blue and Great Tit. The Blue tit is the smaller of the two and very dapper with its bright blue crown black eye stripe and white cheeks. Its breast and belly are yellow whilst the back and tails are lovely blue/green. The male and female plumage is slightly different with the males wings being a deeper ultramarine blue compared to the females lighter medium blue, but this difference can be very slight and unless you have birds together to compare can be very subjective!
Blue Tit
The Great tit is a sleek powerful looking bird; it too has white cheeks and a blue/grey back and tail. However the pure white cheek is surrounded by a jet black head, neck and throat and when seen in good light these black feathers have a beautiful glossy blue sheen to them. The male and female are easier to tell apart with the male having a broad black band extending unbroken from the black throat down the breast before spreading out to a large black patch between the legs, and the female having a less well defined black band and patch between the legs. Both birds are a colourful visitor to your garden and can be viewed to quite close range. Study them closely and you soon see their different characteristics, the Blue Tits being the Cheeky Chappies of the bird table, plus by providing a regular supply of food you will helping them survive the harsh weather. Next month we will be sticking to the basics looking at Greenfinch and Siskin. So until then Good birding!

Dreaming of... ...Vietnam and Cambodia
In these days where people are looking for more exotic destinations, Vietnam and Cambodia are among the next popular countries to travel to. Vietnam offers a fantastic range of places to see and visit, whether you are looking for sightseeing, beaches or a touring holiday. In the city locations an organised tour is a good way to help you become orientated. If you want to explore independently there are a whole array of taxis and 'cyclos' which like a modern day rickshaw offer a novel and fun way to get around. World events have inevitably cast their shadow across this country, which was for so many years the subject of news bulletins rather than travel brochures. In the last 20 years this charming nation of people has opened its doors to visitors. Not only does Vietnam have a variety of places to see, but it also enjoys a vast and beautiful coastline, mist shrouded mountains, mighty rivers and cascading waterfalls. Whether your passion is for history, scenery, food or culture the delicate tapestry of this nation will offer you all of this and much more besides. Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam, and one of the hidden gems of South East Asia. It retains an elegance and charm not often found in this part of the world. Enjoy in particular the city's French influence, seen in fine old colonial buildings and tree lined boulevards. The vibrant and dynamic Ho Chi Minh city, formerly Saigon, is the largest and most energetic city in Vietnam, and the cultural heart of the nation. Hoi An is a well preserved trading port dating back to the 15th century, and the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels (once home to 10,000 people) are well worth visiting. Cambodia was for many years off limits for travellers but now welcomes them with open arms. This magical land boasts ancient temples, dense forests, glorious beaches and a captivating culture and history. The most famous of the country's ancient sites is Angkor. This awe inspiring construction is quite rightly named as one of the 'Seven wonders of the world'. By travelling further afield you can enjoy lazy sun kissed beaches in Sihanoukville, sleepy towns and spectacular national parks. The evocatively named Phnom Penh is a beautiful city full to the brim with charmingly dilapidated colonial heritage. There is also a vibrant riverside promenade and a whole selection of cafes and restaurants. It is important to remember that with developing countries the tourism infrastructure is not as refined as in other places in the region. Hotel standards vary enormously and can be subject to delays and changes. Vietnam and Cambodia are two fantastic countries waiting to be discovered – we should all go before they become tourist traps and become spoilt.

nature The Lek With it's shiny black body, distinctive red wattles over the eye and white under tail feathers which it displays when lekking, the black grouse (Tetrao Tetrix) is one of our most spectacular birds. Once a common sight in woodlands, black grouse numbers have declined alarmingly from an estimated 25,000 in the 1970's to around Black Grouse 5,000 in 2005. This is largely due to the loss of suitable habitat and overgrazing. Consequently, the species is now on the conservation red list and efforts are being made by various bodies such as RSPB and the Forestry Commission to restore habitats and increase numbers.
The best way to see the lek is to join an organised trip – the RSPB normally run early morning trips in April to the lek at the Corrimony reserve in Glen Urquart. Go to http://www.rspb.org.uk and follow the links to Corrimony through the Reserves button at the top of the page. Keep an eye on the site as no dates have yet been published for 2012! Black grouse feed on the buds and shoots of trees and shrubs, plus berries and seeds. The chicks, which normally hatch in mid June feed on insects. They leave the nest in days and can fly within a month of hatching. The males are often referred to as black cock and the drabber coloured females as grey hens. The males take nothing to do with the rearing of the chicks which is left entirely to the grey hens. On rare occasions, a black grouse will mate with the capercaillie, a much larger member of the grouse family. The resulting hybrid is known as a rakelhan and whilst sterile, can cause havoc at his local lek, muscling in on the competition. I hope you’ve found something interesting in this article and do let me have your own wildlife photos and stories. You can e-mail me at ian@wildwestsafari.co.uk

January
The black grouse lek is another of our great Scottish wildlife spectacles. Whilst most of the activity takes place in April or May, black grouse can be found on lek sites most of the year. Birds will continue to use the same lek site for many years with records showing some sites have been used for 60 years. Activity starts around dawn, going on for about 2 hours as the males perform their mating dance with their heads low to the ground, wings spread and displaying their spectacular, white tail under feathers. The red wattles swell to around 4 times their normal size, engorged by blood. They also make a distinctive bubbling, cooing sound as they attempt to attract a mate.

Have you made up your own "God"? God is Holy and He demands something from us. He wants us to put our faith in His Son for salvation. Many people today think that they will be in Heaven as long as they don’t commit any heinous crimes. But the Bible teaches that "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). We have all – you & me, everyone - fallen short of God’s moral standards. We have all broken His laws, and our sin makes us unfit for heaven. Only by personally accepting Christ as our own Lord and Saviour – believing that he died for OUR sins and was raised for OUR justification, and forsaking our sins to live in subjection to Him – can we approach this Holy God. The Bible says "He that believeth on the "You turn things upside down, as if the potter were Son (Jesus Christ) hath everlasting life: and he that thought to be like the clay." Isaiah 29:16 believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”(John 3:35-36) Some have turned God into a loving Santa Claus What have you done then with Jesus which is called who showers us with good things when we are nice. They think that in the You may not like thinking about this, but the Bible states end He will forgive everyone…except the Hitlers and that God has appointed a day in which He will judge you the Stalins. by that man (Jesus Christ) whom He has appointed.
