Forres Mechanics F.C. The stadium, Mosset Park, is next to the A96, north of Forres. Football offers opportunities for girls and boys to keep fit through Forres Under 7s, and there are a number of football pitches within the area.

The Moray Firth has some of the greatest freshwater and sea angling in the world. Best of all is the fact that it can be found almost anywhere along the Moray Firth coast and, if you are happy to fish for different species, you can 'fish the Firth' twelve months of the year! The Firth provides the estuaries for 18 of Scotland's most important salmon rivers, including the Nairn, Findhorn, Spey and Lossie. All of these rivers have angling clubs or associations which offer fishing, although membership numbers are limited and there may be a waiting list in a few cases. Stocked fisheries provide good sport, easy access including many opportunties for less able anglers, and tuition facilities. Except in severe weather, these fisheries can be accessed all year round. The Angling Centre in Elgin, Forres Tackle Shop and Pat Fraser in Nairn are good places to start for all your fishing needs.

Lossiemouth F.C. A senior football club from Lossiemouth. Founded in 1945, they were admitted to the Highland League in the following year and have played in that league ever since. The club play their football at Grant Park in Lossiemouth.

Elgin City F.C. Part-time senior professional football club based in Elgin, Moray. They currently compete in the Scottish Professional Football League, Scottish League 2. Elgin City have played at Borough Briggs since 1921 when it replaced Cooper Park. The ground currently has a capacity of 4,520 (478 seated).

Moray is home to many golf courses. Locations include Buckie, Dufftown, Elgin, Forres, Kinloss, Garmouth and Kingston, Grantown on Spey, Hopeman, Lossiemouth, Spey Bay, and Nairn in the Highlands. Forres has a beautiful 18 hole golf course, with many beautiful views of Findhorn Bay, Califer Hill and Rafford, Dava etc. Nairn has long been famed for its two championship golf courses, Nairn Golf Club and Nairn Dunbar Golf Club and its position as a top Highland golfing centre has been further reinforced with the world renowned

Nairn County F.C. A senior football club who currently play in the Highland Football League, were founded in 1914 and play at Station Park, Nairn. As a senior team they can play in the Scottish Cup. The team colours are yellow and black and go by the nickname of the Wee County. Station Park, Balblair Road Nairn, Nairnshire Scotland, IV12 5LT Email: info@nairncountyfc.co.uk Tel: 01667 454298

Curtis Cup and the European Tour coming to the area.

Hill Walking Ben Macdui is the highest summit in Moray, this being on the boundary between Moray and Aberdeenshire. Most of Moray offers gentler scenery as it gradually descends from the Grampian Mountains to the shores of the Moray Firth. Ben Rinnes and Carn Daimh have good paths and fine views to the Grampian Mountains to the south, and over the Moray Firth to Caithness in the north. The Cromdale Hills offer ridge walking along Strath Spey but the going can be rough with fewer well defined paths.

Horse Riding With many beautiful routes around Moray you’ll be spoiled for choice Explore the forests of Culbin, Roseisle and Lossiemouth. The Dava Way is also accessible to horses. An excellent leaflet produced by the Moray Equestrian Access Group can be obtained from the Tourist Information Office in the Falconer Museum in Forres. There are a number of organisations offering riding lessons including Burgie Equine Centre, Equus Equestrian Centre, Moray Group Riding For The Disabled, Tomintoul Riding Centre, Garmouth Riding Centre, Rashcrook Equestrian, Logie Farm Riding Centre, and Mundole Equestrian Centre.

Mountain Bike Trails Local volunteers, working with Forest Enterprise, have created some fantastic mountain bike challenges

through the forested hills on the east of the River Spey. The Moray Monster Trails provide 30km of riding at three linked locations, Whiteash, Ordiequish and Ben Aigan. Local coaches take bicyles at no charge. The Moray Mountain Bike Club aims to get people out and enjoy the countryside XC loops in Sanquhar Woods, Forres includes pump section (not the pump track), small drops, car park etc.

Rock Climbing There are a number of places where you can do rock climbing. Covesea in Lossiemouth, Cummingston, Logie Head and inland at Huntly’s Cave are worthwhile to look at. The Moray Mountaineering Club have members who are rock climbing enthusiasts who meet on a Wednesday evenings, usually at Cummingston sea cliffs.

Rugby Clubs in the area include Moray RFC & Moray Titans RLFC, Buckie Scorpians and Lossiemouth RFC.

Sailing Around the coasts, suitable locations for sailing include Lossiemouth, Portsoy and the Findhorn Bay. The Royal Yacht Club in Findhorn and The Moray Firth Sailing Club offer sailing classes.

The Dava Way - between Forres and Grantown-onSpey Easy route suitable for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. It links Forres and Grantown-onSpey and almost all of the route follows the old

The Forest By The Firth Trail in Lossiemouth A five mile walk which starts at the East Beach wooden footbridge, there is a map carved in stone to guide you on your way. The route heads east along the beach eventually leading to the sheltered paths of Lossie Forest. The track heads west towards the River Lossie then leads you back to Lossiemouth along the sands. High tide may prevent access to parts of the walk.

Hopeman to Lossiemouth An excellent one-way coastal walk with a fine clifftop section, coves and sea-stacks, finishing with a long walk across a huge sandy beach. If starting from Elgin you can catch a bus out to Hopeman and another bus back from Lossiemouth. Alternatively, if you have the time and energy you can reverse your walk back to the start.

Nairn One of the most popular walks starts from the harbour and heads west long the promenade for about 3km before turning inland to Delnies Wood and then looping back to the shore. Covering a total of 10km over fairly easy terrain, this walk includes some stunning views including an overview the town. The harbour is also the starting point for a walk along the River Nairn to Cawdor. The beautiful stretch of riverside is home to a variety of birds and wildlife and is a restful experience surrounded by trees and the sound of the water. At Cawdor there's a choice of five different waymarked nature trails within woods surrounding the historic castle. Quarrel Wood, Elgin Woodland walks through beeches, oaks and pines. Quarrel Wood commands a hilltop position overlooking Elgin, the Moray Firth and surrounding countryside. Randolph's Leap from Logie Steading A popular scenic river walk to Randolph's Leap where the River Findhorn flows through narrow rocks. Starts from Logie Steading where there are toilets, farm shop, children's play area, heritage centre, and an excellent cafe. There are clear paths with some steep edges over the river, a short section on a minor road, no pavement. Roseisle Forest and Dunes This exploration of the pine-clad dunes at Roseisle takes in the best bits of the woods, visits a bird hide, and takes in views of the sea, but also leaves plenty of time to enjoy the beach. There are clear, waymarked paths and tracks.

The Speyside Way The Speyside Way is one of Scotland's four Long Distance Routes (LDRs). It runs for over 60 miles between Buckie, on the Moray Firth, and Aviemore at the heart of Strathspey, following the valley of the River Spey for much of the way. The route passes through some of Scotland's most beautiful landscapes; by rivers and mountains, over moorland and along forest paths. Torrieston Forest, by Pluscarden Abbey There are three waymarked forest walks through Monaughty Forest from Torrieston, a short distance along the glen from Pluscarden Abbey; the route as described makes a longer outing by taking in most of all three. There are waymarked forestry paths with a fair amount of ascent and descent. Winding Walks, near Fochabers This circular walk heads up the side of the Small Burn with the option of taking one of the winding paths through the trees. It then visits the wooden gazebo at Peep's Viewpoint overlooking Fochabers. Forest tracks and paths with an optional path with steps.

as Clashach Cove on the OS maps, road signs refer to it as Cove Bay and many locals call it Primrose Bay. If you take coastal trail from

the Hopeman East Beach’s colourful beach huts around to the caves at Clashach Cove you will see the spectacular caves, yellow sandstone cliffs, colourful boulders and rocks which will delight all budding photographers, young and old alike. During the summer you may even find some wild strawberries to munch on along the way. Culbin Sands This RSPB coastal reserve in Morayshire, is full of wildlife to look out for. Culbin Sands boasts a beautiful sandy beach where you can spot sea ducks, oystercatchers and ringed plovers. Admire pretty dune plants and flowers as you stroll along the sands and take in the views. Facilities include nature trails, picnic areas and a car park at East Beach with public toilets. Nairn is the nearest town which is served by train and bus services. Cummingston Beach The descent to the beach is steep so be prepared, parking is available near the children’s play park, take your own refreshments as there aren’t any shops nearby. A hidden gem of a beach nestling between the villages of Burghead and Hopeman. Surrounded by cliffs and caves it’s a popular haunt for rock climbers.

East Beach, Lossiemouth A popular beach which gets very busy when the weather is good. Access is via a long wooden bridge over the River Lossie. A row of sand dunes separate the river and the sea, take care the river current can be very strong. On the sea side of the dunes there is a wide beach, great for sand castle building. There are also plenty of waves for leaping over. If you want to get away from the crowds you may have to go quite a way round the bay. West Beach, Lossiemouth Another popular beach, brilliant for a family day out. At high tide most of the sand is covered but as the sea recedes lots of rock pools are exposed. The sea is shallow for a long way out and on hot days is heated by the warm sand. There is plenty of parking on the esplanade which is right next to the beach. The sands curve round to Covesea Lighthouse which is now a visitor centre. Findhorn Beach One of the best known beaches in Moray, part of an estuary it’s a bird watchers favourite. The wide flat sands are great for dog walking and sand castle building. The sheltered waters of the estuary also offer excellent sailing and water sports opportunities. The heritage centre with its restored ice house is definitely worth a visit. After a busy day on the beach Findhorn Village offers a good selection of places to eat. Hopeman Beaches East Beach in Hopeman is made unique, in Moray, by its line of quirky beach huts - all individually decorated and a great photo opportunity. The beach is a

LOCAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE & PLACES OF INTEREST Ardclach- Bell Tower Ardclach Bell Tower is an architectural oddity. It is very small – about 4.3m2 overall – and has only two storeys. The ground floor may well have been a prison, judging by its small door and lack of windows. The floor above, reached by a narrow stone stair, has a fireplace in the north wall, with a square pistol hole on each side. Standing on its own on a hill overlooking a hidden part of the Findhorn Valley. 9mls South of Nairn. Signposted off the A939 to Grantown on Spey. The Chapter House is one, its octagonal ceiling is said to be one of the best in existence. The Chapter House can now used as wedding venue. Visitors can climb up the spiral staircase to the top of one of the towers, if you are either claustrophobic or afraid of heights, you may wish to think twice before

The library was rebuilt on the other side of the road and the foundations of the original house were excavated and are now the beautiful sunken gardens. In the park, there are picnic areas, a bowling club, the cricket pitch, woodlands walks, a children’s play area, public conveniences as well as the floral sculptures that Forres has become so famous for in the Scotland and Britain In Bloom competitions. Ladyhill Lady Hill, with its memorial dedicated to the Duke of Gordon, is situated at the West end of Elgin High Street opposite the postal sorting office. There are steps up to the top of the hill, a steep climb which is rewarded with an excellent view of Elgin and the surrounding area. A raised relief map helps visitors to identify places of interest. There are also some ruins of Elgin Castle in evidence. Lecht Mine, Tomintoul Set in the hills at the foot of the Lecht, the iron mine has a rich and interesting history. Originally opened

as an iron ore mine in 1730 the mine saw substantial losses and closed only seven years later. The mine was re-opened in 1841 by the Duke of Richmond as a Manganese Mine, and at its peak of activity over 60 men and boys worked the mine and it was, and still is, the largest manganese mine every worked in Scotland. Sadly competition from imported ore caused the mine to close for a final time after just 5 years of trading. Only the crushing mill building remains, this being very solidly built to carry the water wheel, but spoil heaps and foundations of other buildings can be seen across the burn. The mine can be reached by a short walk from the Well of the Lecht car park. It was, apparently first erected in 1402 AD and marked the limits of the Cathedral Sanctuary. In its present form it consists of a tall column set on a flight of steps and capped by a sundial dated 1733, during which year the Cross was probably re-built but the copestone with carved figures is from some much earlier structure. The sundial and top of the column are now in the Museum having been replaced in facsimile in 1941. The Mercat Cross, Forres Stands in the centre of the High Street in front of the Tolbooth. It is in the Gothic style of architecture and stands forty feet high. The Cross is a miniature version of Sir Walter Scott's Monument in Edinburgh. The present market cross of Forres stands on the site of the former. It was built in 1844. The base of the former cross was left in position and, the new cross was built over it. Nothing of the old cross can now be seen. Pluscarden Abbey Pluscarden Abbey is the home of a community of Benedictine Monks. It is the only medieval monastery in Britain still inhabited by monks and being used for its original purpose. Situated six miles southwest of Elgin in Moray, the monastery enjoys the peace and stillness of a secluded glen, but is easily reached by road from the town. The atmosphere of quiet reflection and of work dedicated to the glory of God is the same now as it was in the thirteenth century, when a community of monks first came to this part of Moray. If you visit the Abbey today, you can enjoy not only the beauty of its architecture and its setting but also something of the restful atmosphere of devotion that has so deeply permeated this little corner of Scotland.Pluscarden, Elgin, Morayshire IV30 8UA T: 01343 890257 Rait Castle Located 2.5 miles south of Nairn. Over the centuries, the building was owned by several different families. Around 1404 or 1405 Sir Alexander Gervaise de Rait is said to have killed the 4th

Thane of Cawdor whose son was subsequently given the castle. Less than 40 years later it appeared to have reverted to the Mackintoshes who were also previous owners. It is well worth a visit since, although now in ruins, it is generally in good condition and an excellent example of a 13th century hallhouse. Rothes Castle, Rothes Only one wall remains but great views from Castle Hills. Built to protect the vital trade routes to Elgin the site of Rothes Castle is recognised as one of the most ancient strongholds in Moray. It is estimated that the castle was four storeys high and was protected by a portcullis and drawbridge. Scalan Seminary, Glenlivet For most of the 18th century the Seminary of Scalan in the Braes was the only place in Scotland where young men were trained for the Catholic priesthood. From 1717 to 1799 over 100 priests were trained at this secluded site, despite repeated attacks by Hanovarian soldiers, and the College played a vital role in keeping the traditional Catholic faith alive in northern Scotland. Spynie Palace Set in beautiful countryside two miles North of Elgin off the A941. For five centuries Spynie Palace was home to the Bishops of Moray, in the late 15th century Bishop David commissioned the building of a massive tower house standing over 22m high. The tower is still standing today and is one of the largest tower houses ever built in Scotland. Spynie Palace is now under the care of Historic Scotland. Further information can be found

St Laurence’s Church, Forres A church has been on this site since medieval times having been commissioned by Alexander III of Scotland. The original building was famously burned down by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390. The impressive building that dominates the town today was opened in 1904. It is a fine example of gothic architecture and whilst the exterior is impressive, the interior has been described as unmissable - well worth a visit. UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

The year ahead! Our small team of 4 based here in the Moray Firth, will no doubt have a busy year ahead.as usual. I should also give a mention to Susie, the springer spaniel, who I don’t think has been properly introduced. Many of you will have met her though, as she goes everywhere with us – mad as a box of frogs !

Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish ! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). Lets hope we get away without a repeat of last summer’s wash out. Autumn Months

Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include: Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, can cause devastation.

Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines. For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Weedkill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Recently, spring has been very late.
