REAP, the Keith-based charity, are running a project funded by Comic Relief throughout Moray, helping people, especially older people, tackle their energy bills. REAP offers confidential and impartial advice on insulation, grants, the Green Deal and benefits, plus help setting up fuel clubs to bulk-buy domestic heating oil. “We are happy to give advice over the phone or face-to-face”, said Barrie Wink, REAP Project Worker. “We can also help people access other help, for example from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or their landlord. The 2014 Commonwealth Games baton left Buckingham Palace a few weeks ago and has now started a worldwide trek around many of the Commonwealth nations ending up in Glasgow next June. I was surprised recently to learn that there are currently 53 independent sovereign states that are members of the Commonwealth with a further 7 waiting for acceptance. Quite a structure!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Rescued from Misery This year has seen a number of events to mark the bicentenary of David Livingstone. Born in Blantyre 19 March 1813, David spent many years as a missionary in Africa, travelling thousands of miles on foot, ox or cart. In a letter home to his sisters he described how, on one of these journeys, “a little girl about eleven or twelve years of age came up and sat down under my wagon. She had lived with a sister whom she had lately lost by death. Another family took possession of her for the purpose of selling her. But not liking this, she determined to run away from them and come to some friends near Kuruman. I heard her sobbing violently, on looking round, I observed the cause. A man with a gun had been sent after her. She had been loaded with beads to render her more attractive, and fetch a higher price. These she stripped off and gave to the man, and desired him to go away. I afterward took measures for hiding her, and
though fifty men had come for her, they would not have got her." Like the family who had no love for this girl and only loaded her with beads for their own selfish purposes, sin holds you in its power, giving you plenty of attractions to keep you from God and ensuring you of a future of eternal misery. When David came to her village, the girl realised there was an alternative to her life of sadness, this man was going to the place where she knew she would be happy. Her decision was made; she turned from her life of misery to follow the missionary to the place of safety. In like manner for you and I, there is an alternative to sin and its misery for; “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” 1Timothy 1:15. Through His death on the cross Jesus Christ has provided the way in which you can have your sins forgiven and be reconciled to God, bringing eternal peace and joy. You must determine to turn from your sin and, by faith, put your trust in the Lord Jesus who

Everywhere I go in Moray people are asking about the Independence Referendum set to take place next year. Whether it is in the pub, in the supermarket or just walking down the street it is the subject many, many people want to ask me about. It is great to see people excited about the debate and asking questions about a decision that will for most be one of the biggest they make in their lifetime. I was out in Elgin’s newest pub, the Drouthy Cobbler, recently and, again, it was the subject that came up in almost every discussion. It is great to see people so engaged about the issue and really thinking about what they want for the future.

October saw the 100th anniversary of the National Farmers Union and I was absolutely delighted to join NFU members in Norah to celebrate what is a long and proud history of an important rural organisation. I regularly meet NFU representatives and members as I travel around Moray. it is great to join in the celebrations of this significant birthday and wish them continued success for many more years! Chef’s Confidential King Scallops, Pork Belly, Cabbage, Buerre Blanc INGREDIENTS
1/2 Bottle white wine
6 King scallops
150g Butter
1/ 2 kg Pork belly
1/2 Lime
1 White cabbage
2 Carrots
1 Savoy cabbage
1 Onion
1 Cauliflower
30g Rosemary
1 Curly kale
Peppercorns
2 Radish
1 ltr Water
METHOD Pork belly Fry the pork belly for 2 minutes with oil. Add water, rosemary, carrot, onion, and peppercorns. Bring to the boil. Turn down the heat and simmer gently for 4 hours. Then leave to cool. Remove from stock and slice into strips.
Scallops In a large very, hot frying pan add a touch of oil. Add seasoned scallops and pork belly slices. Cook until golden. Then turn over. Turn off the heat. Add a knob of butter and squeeze of lime.
Garnish Thinly slice the white cabbage and cauliflower. Cut the savoy into small, round pieces. Portion the kale. Blanch in boiling salted water. Refresh with cold water.
Plating Blanch the cabbage, cauliflower and kale with seasoned boiling water and drain. Place the vegetables around the plate, then the pork belly and scallops. Add a few thin slices of radish. Finally dress with the buerre blanc.
Buerre Blanc Dice cold butter into small cubes. Reduce the wine by 2/3. Whisk in the butter a few pieces at a time until creamy. Lightly season and keep warm.

A Dry Summer this Year - at Last and Now the Grass is Compacted ! The Beechgrove Garden and all the other gardening advice this last month has been about aerating the lawn now. All of these factors weaken the grass, it loses colour, growth slows right down and the lawn becomes prone to the invasion of moss and lichen over the Winter. Dunlop’s Motor Factors - a local business with national clout
Dunlops Motor Factorʼs and Autostore (owned and run by Andy Dunlop himself) is one of the best known one-stop car shops in Moray. Dunlopʼs is a family run business that puts the customer first. Established in Forres some 12 years ago it is constantly investing in expanding its ranges of stock by establishing trade contacts throughout the UK. This enables them to offer an unrivalled combination of choice and quality at prices that are hard to beat.
The last 18 months or so have been a particular trial for Andy and his team. Improvements to the A96 West of Forres and ongoing Flood Alleviation works have brought a pretty steady stream of large building and construction work traffic together with the associated noise and dust. But, through it all, Dunlops have continued to offer the value for money alternative to its customers and fortunately there now seems to be “light at the end of the tunnel” (although in this case itʼs a road!). All works are due to be completed in early 2015 although there are murmurings that the project may be ahead of schedule. Once finished Dunlops will have a significantly improved direct access to the A96 and be more convenient for all concerned. Till then the team soldier on!
