Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Overcoming the world of hatred The state of the world in which we live must be a cause of concern for all of us – whether we intentionally think of it or not. There are many different issues that cause concern. Among them is the hatred towards communities that are by faith or ideology different from one’s own. What we have been seeing in the past few decades as attacks in places of worship and communal spaces are extreme manifestations of seemingly growing hatred against specific communities. The Global community is often left in complete loss unable to even to respond to such situations in any meaningful way. Of course, there are intelligence reviews and increased armed personnel presence, raids and encounters. But then, time goes on, and we hear of further attacks in other places. Some responses, however, are different. They do not come down from power houses nor do they claim to wage wars against terrorism. And yet, their messages are moving and powerful. The world is still reeling from the aftermath of the shootings in Sri

Lanka on Easter Sunday, which targeted the Christian community in the country. The following Sunday, when churches were closed for worship for fear of further attacks, a photo went viral on social media where Muslims stood in front of their Mosque with a banner saying, “Our Mosque is open to hold your Mass here. We will protect you as you worship”. There are other instances too. You will recall the man who stood outside the Mosque in Manchester with a message of friendship following the attack in New Zealand. Jews and Christians stand guard while Muslims pray inside a California Mosque following shootings. These responses acknowledge the basis of common humanity, appreciate common human need for worship and devotion to God, recognise common human vulnerability and hunger for the protection of life. They are humane responses in the face of inhumane acts of evil. Rays of hope for the world is seen in such life affirming acts in the face of a world that is spreading hatred, and as a result, violence and destruction. While they may appear feeble representations of goodwill,

they are incredibly powerful testimonies of those who, at their hearts, believe that the world of hatred, violence and destruction must be and will be overcome. Apostle John in his letter affirms: ‘whatever is born of God conquers the world’ (1 John 5: 4). Jesus proclaimed life for all – and life in abundance (John 10: 10) and he also said, ‘In the world there is persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world’ (John 16: 33). Affirming life and overcoming the evil world is central to Christian faith. Thoughts and actions that are born of God point to life and stand up against forces of destruction. May we be inspired by the signs of hope we see amidst the dark struggles of life. Let our affirmations of life be part of our everyday living that hatred and destruction are rooted out and there is life for all in abundance. Rev Hamilton Inbadas St John’s Episcopal Church Forres

Parliament Blog & Tide Times Many people will be turning their thoughts to summer holidays and for Moray families, relying on their car for their getaway, the price of fuel will be a factor. However, a mechanism to help keep the cost fair might not be far away. As Chair of the AllParty Parliamentary Group on Fair Fuel for UK Motorists and Hauliers, we are negotiating with the UK Government to introduce a voluntary PumpWatch scheme for motorists impacted by the cost of fuel. Moray is a rural area so the cost of fuel matters to drivers. A voluntary pump price monitoring code will allow fair competition, protect smaller independent garages and give full transparency so that bikers, motorists, van drivers and truckers are clear about when and how pump prices rise and fall as the price of oil changes. Hopefully, motorists will be encouraged by this initial step and we can now progress this matter for drivers in Moray and across the country. As usual I can be contacted on 01309 679253 or douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk

On a recent visit to the Scottish Borders, I saw the impressive Leaderfoot Railway Viaduct which carried passengers until 1948 and freight until 1965, on the iconic Waverley Line, south from Edinburgh Against the odds, spirited campaigning saved the Kyle and Far North lines from Dr Beeching’s brutal rail closures in the 1960s. Imagine if other routes had been spared, what an iconic array of railway lines we could have had across the North; from Oban to Ballachulish to Forres to Aviemore. Now, even the modest reinstatement of some double track near Kirkhill would make a great difference to travel north of Inverness. The hugely successful Border Rail Line shows what can be done by reopening lines. Let’s hope there’s more re-openings to come.

As I write this blog, firefighters and other emergency services are working round the clock to tackle the most recent wildfire in the local area, which took hold at

Knockando. I want to pay tribute to the emergency services who have done a marvellous job tackling the fire and keeping local residents safe. The fire, which reached six miles long at some points, is incredibly serious and I was contacted by a number of constituents expressing concerns about the impact of the wildfire. It’s clear that a large area of the natural environment and wildlife habitats have been damaged, as well as some of our local forestry. We’ve seen an increasing number of wildfires taking hold in Moray which is a real concern and I’ve sought a report on the causes from the Fire Service. I’ve also contacted colleagues in the Scottish Government to find out to what extent the authorities are aware of the causes of wildfires and to measure the impact they have on our precious natural environment and habitats.

Carers Week 10-17 June Not being able to talk to friends about caring leaves 1 in 3 carers (32%) socially isolated (The world shrinks: Carer loneliness research report by Carers UK as part of the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission, 2017). A further 32% say they feel socially isolated at work because of their caring responsibilities (IBID). Despite the huge contribution of unpaid carers to society, an overwhelming majority (74%) (research report for Carers Week 2016) feel their caring role isn't understood or valued by their community. An unwillingness to talk about caring has for many carers created a barrier to their inclusion at work, home and in public life. For lots of people, looking after a loved one is 'just something you do' meaning many do not recognise their caring role straight away. Nine in 10 carers (91%) (research report for Carers Week 2016) VD\ WKH\ KDYH PLVVHG RXW RQ ijQDQFLDO or practical support – or both – because they didn't identify themselves as a carer. Three quarters (78%) reported suffering from stress and anxiety as a result of missing out on support. Carers Week 2019 is about Getting carers connected to important support services, advice and information, and family and friends. Everyone has a part to play in connecting carers and helping them to get the support they need to care without putting off their own health needs or losing important relationships with others. This could include an employer creating carer-friendly policies by listening to the experiences of their workforce, a GP practice offering an annual health check or alternative appointment times to carers struggling to attend due to their caring responsibilities or a leisure centre offering special deals for carers.

Connected to friends and family Lack of time, and understanding from others, can cause loneliness and isolation DPRQJVW FDUHUV 7KH GLIijFXOW\ RI WDNLQJ time away from our caring role also adds to these feelings. Greater understanding from friends, colleagues, and the public, as well as more opportunities for breaks and social activities are all needed to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. Connected to others, including carers Sometimes a few words from someone who understands your situation can be D OLIHOLQH %HLQJ D FDUHU FDQ EH GLIijFXOW and isolating, so speaking to someone who knows what you are going through can make a big difference. Carers Week is an opportunity for you to get connected to others, including fellow carers, in your community and build new friendships. Here in Moray, Quarriers Carer Support Service is hosting an event on Thursday 13 June at Elgin Town Hall, where carers from all over Moray can come together WR FDWFK XS ZLWK ROG IULHQGV DQG ijQG others not met yet, while sharing information and enjoying activities with like-minded people. To book your place, email moraycarers@quarriers.org.uk, or phone 01343 556031 Connected to services The Carers Service can help you complete an Adult Carer Support Plan, identifying the services and support you need to manage your caring role. Access to regular breaks is vital, so our Creative Breaks programme offers the opportunity for funding to do something you enjoy, while taking valuable time to yourself, to recharge your batteries and refresh your mind and body. This Carers Week, get connected. Start by getting in touch – we look forward to meeting you.

Unique to the Forres Games is the Message Bike Race where spectators can turn participant and race the field on an old traditional message bike in hope of lifting the winner’s trophy!

From caber tossing to the hammer throw, long jump, high jump and more, the Forres Highland Games will provide you with a traditional Scottish experience. Games Day commences with a Pipe Band Procession through the centre of the Moray town before the Games’ flag is raised above the arena.

The Chieftain Opening this year’s event is Chieftain John Channon. John is no stranger to the Forres Highland Games and was once pitted against Scotland’s high jump champion and took part in many sprint events over the years.

SATURDAY 6TH JULY 2019 GRANT PARK, FORRES 12.30pm START Under U.K.A S.A.L & S.C.U rules

He said he was honoured to have been chosen for the Forres Highland Games which will take place in Grant Park on July 6, but admitted he will miss playing with the band on the day which last year won the trophy for deportment and dress. John who lives in Dyke said: “I couldn’t believe it when I got the letter. I kept it to myself for a while and when I eventually did tell the band, they of course all already knew. The worst kept secret. John added: “I really do consider this a great honour and I am really looking forward to the day and being able to meet the stallholders, visitors, those involved in organising the Games, the judges and adjudicators and of course the competitors. It’s a great day out and I am thrilled to be this year’s Chieftain.

How the Alpha Course changed Maisie’s life Meet Maisie, who first attended the Alpha Course in September 2017, then last year she came along as a group helper. In February she was baptised by full inversion as a profession of her faith in Jesus. Maisie has kindly given her testimony for others to read and to be inspired by. “When I was very young I had a connection to a spiritual world, very naturally and without thinking, I was sure that my Nanny was in heaven and I would see her again. I would chat with God as I walked the fields at my childhood home. We would go to church when I was very young but I would I say my upbringing was best described as secular Christianity. Any possible faith was provided on weak foundations. It was there and we did go to church annually at Christmas Eve, but it wasn’t necessarily encouraged and talked about. I didn’t have friends at school who were Christian and so there was never a place for it. Alongside a secular schooling, God just didn’t have a place, in fact as I became a teenager I was certain he wasn’t there. I was absolutely sure that Christians, whilst some may be nice and ‘normal’, were wrong about a lot of things and weren’t worth too much time. Although I still went to church with school twice a year and with family to a

Christmas Eve service, church didn’t seem to have any relevance or importance. It was tolerated. I argued against their morals and discussed the existence of God with a teacher, supporting the reasoning against his existence – although the teachers words of supporting God would not leave my head. He said there is reason to believe. I grew to Christ through both researching for evidence against his truth and against God’s existence, listening to Christian music with my friend – purely because we liked the music, and through watching ‘YouTubers’ who happened to be Christian. These people were good people, who believed in a good God. Little did I know also, through researching evidence against God that I would find reason to believe. The Christian music was placing His word upon my heart. I began to believe in the possibility of God. This showed me that God meets us where we are at and knows us as who we are, he is

patient with our doubts and fumbling. Although for a while I would not call myself Christian, I believed in something and a mix of things. I kept reading about it, watching videos where people would talk about the nature of God, of Jesus and the things he did and the reasons to believe. I studied Religion at school and heard from a non-Christian teacher solid reasons to be a Christian, logical reasons that made more sense that the ones not to. I decided I did believe in God, but didn’t agree with Christianity at the time, I couldn’t say yes to the whole package. I also couldn’t doubt that my research said loud and clear that the Bible provides the truth. I was intensely interested in the world of orphan care and adoption, particularly international adoption at the time. Suddenly one evening I just felt an overwhelming feeling inside and prayed for the orphans. I knew I cared but I hadn’t prayed like this before, I believe this was a prayer that was not me alone. It felt like it had power. I started praying every night, and saw fruit for many of these prayers, the lessening of anxieties for example. One night at a time where I was praying regularly but still not considering pure Christianity I had a dream where I spoke to Jesus and just chatted to him, like a friend who really knew me and cared, he spoke about the love of God and said a verse which I wrote as best I could remember and found it almost lined up perfectly with a verse in Psalm, which I had no memory of reading previously. The following year I took part on an Alpha course during a time when we were moving to a new area and living between two areas, new and old homes. It was the first time I had met and spoke openly with real Christians, not just those in the media. It answered questions, some which I didn’t know I had. It led me closer to God in a way which I hadn’t previously, in fellowship. I was unable to attend church on Sunday for a long time due to living quite rurally. But I actually

Why not find out more just like Maisie at our next Alpha Course on Wednesday, 4th September from 7-9 pm at Forres Baptist Church, Clovenside. It is a 12 week course with meals and a chance to share your thoughts about Christianity and life. More details to follow in next months’ edition of Spotlight.

really wanted to. I finished that Alpha course with a greater relationship with Christ but still very much in the head faith. The following year I helped at the next Alpha. I realised I didn’t need the facts anymore although I knew they were there. My spiritual relationship and desire to pray and total acceptance of the truth of Jesus mattered more. I had always been very doubtful of the power of prayer. My mind which likes logic and tangible philosophy didn’t fully grasp the workings of prayer to fully commit to prayer. So God led me to Jonah, an orphan in China through a small American charity’s website. His face showed up stronger to me than the others, although the actual picture size did differ from the rest. His bio for some reason just had a very strong feeling for me. I couldn’t donate money, I couldn’t adopt him nor could my family due to China’s age limits. It was clear, God wanted me to pray. To trust in him more and so I now pray to Jesus for Jonah. When I have forgotten to pray, for humans are imperfect, He brings Jonah to my mind and leads a prayer. It was this greater respect for prayer which made me recognise that it was time to pray towards baptism. Before it had just been a thing that Christians do. If I had considered it, it wouldn’t be a strong feeling. But this time I felt excitement and peace, a similar feeling I had when I knew the spirit was leading my prayers. So I finally wanted to show my commitment to Jesus, through baptism. Now I try to find my strength in God and not myself or my own strength or that of other imperfect humans. If I’m struggling with something at work, I say a quick prayer, it may not be answered, but I think, what if it is? So I try to find my strength in God, to take worries and big decisions out of my head and into Jesus’ hands, I don’t always because I am not perfect - but Jesus is”.

SpotLIGHT Garden

Brought to you by:

Red Thread (Yellow Be Aware Warning) ! We often have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed. Clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year. I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society).
