Our latest in a long line of elections and referenda has now taken place and they tell us that we now have “certainty” (debatable perhaps) but I wonder actually how much in life really is ever certain and if it was wouldn’t it all get a bit tedious? Stability, maybe, but sometimes the unexpected can be fun and add a worthwhile challenge to life. I suppose, a good balance is probably what we are after. The ability to know most of what is round the corner but also have the opportunity to be surprised from time to time. As they say “Variety is the Spice of Life” - Anon!-

‘Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!’ This sentiment opens Psalm 107 and ends it 43 verses later. The author recalls Israel’s wanderings and troubles, and seeks to show the reader the end purpose of troubles, which is to give praise to God. Five times their troubles are mentioned, followed by, ‘Then they cried to the Lord.’ Are you in trouble today my friend? Do you feel under pressure? Join the crowd! God allows pressure to bring us to a position where we appreciate His grace. Paul reflected on the pressure he was once under (2 Cor. 1:8~10). He says that the pressure was so great, it was beyond his ability to sort it, that there was no way out of it and going on with life appeared meaningless. Then, he found the answer in Jesus. Are you getting more pressure than you can stand? Join the crowd, but remember … the pressure you are under, the need you have, is all calculated and planned to bring you to your knees before the Lord. He is not a sadistic God delighting in human suffering, but a loving, heavenly Father who wants to bring you to a place of blessing. ‘Then they cried to the Lord.’ We are all candidates for mercy. If we
got what we deserved, we would be in hell already. Everything outside of hell that we experience, is pure grace! There is a lonsomeness of the soul until we rest in God through Jesus. You can be surrounded by crowds of people all day long, yet be so lonely amidst them all. You know that, don’t you? Israel wandered physically in the desert, but wandering is a very typical human expression. What do you want most in life? ‘To win the lottery,’ you say. And what then? ‘To set out in a new and different direction for my life.’ And what then? ‘To retire and do everything I always had no time to do.’ And what then? ‘I suppose I will die.’ And what then? … …….. silence! Friend, it doesn’t have to be like that. You don’t have to be a wanderer ~ God can direct you. There is an indescribable loneliness to life without Christ, even in a crowd. You know the feeling? Nobody cares … right? But Jesus knows and Jesus cares. Pressure is intended to bring us to an end of our self-reliance and lead us to prayer. The Lord Jesus never yet turned anyone away who prayed to Him, confessing their sins, their unworthiness and their needs and … He never will!

People may condemn you for a variety of reasons, but there is no longer any condemnation against you from God (Romans 8:1), not if you are trusting in Jesus Christ. Because He is alive I can get to Him and, better still, He can get to me. When you give your heart to Jesus, the Holy Spirit of God comes to live within you and when you yield yourself to Him, He then sets you aside in a very special manner for God’s special use, within the parameters of that eternal plan that was set out for you. One plan for one person. Pressure leads to prayer ~ that is its purpose. Prayer leads to praise ~ that is its purpose. Praise of thanksgiving for God’s mercy to us, in and through Jesus. Praise for His steadfast and enduring love. ‘Whoever offers praise glorifies Me’ (Ps.50:23). Are you under pressure today friend? Then, cry to the Lord.

Words by the Wayside “...that your faith and hope might be in God.” (1st Peter 1:21)
Christian, the Lord Jesus, must be all to you and have all of you. He is not on the cross now, He is a risen, personal Saviour and you must look to Him in all things. He would have us always depend on Him, even when we don’t know how things will turn out. Do not doubt the love of God that is found alone and known alone in Jesus Christ. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering. He is faithful that promised.

Course Grasses in the Lawn ! I am prompted to mention this now as this spring saw an emergence of course grasses in many lawns, more so than usual. What are course grasses ? They are “wild” grasses, as opposed to “lawn” grasses, typically pale in colour, a thicker, course looking leaf, and often seem to grow in clumps in the lawn. They are seeded by other course grasses already in the lawn, or can be blown in from neighbouring land, or even deposited in bird droppings.
a spring rake prior to mowing, you will lift the long stems, which can then be mown off before they produce seed. There is a good factsheet provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. If you search for www.rhs/coursegrasses, it should take you straight there. They are not weeds, so a lawn weedkiller wont clear them. If there are just a few clumps, you can dig out a square of turf (like a carpet tile) and put it in the bin. You can replace with a patch of turf, or seed with lawn grass. If there is a major infestation, that’s not realistic, and you might just have to get used to it, unless you are prepared to replace the lawn with a new one. They were prevalent this spring as lawn grasses were slow to start growing, because April and May saw drought conditions. Course grasses tend to tolerate and keep growing in these conditions, whereas lawn grasses don’t, so the wild stuff seems to dominate, even if only for a short spell until the main grass gets going. You can help prevent them spreading by mowing regularly. Also, if you give the lawn a quick swish with

THE DROUTHY COBBLER
On the 2nd July, the 10ft Tall Theatre company bring a play by Oliver Emanuel to Elgin. Videotape is a story about a couple, one half of which has decided the time has come to leave. Set in Aberdeen and combining live action with video design, Videotape explores the lengths we go to for those we love. Music fans are in for a treat, with four excellent bands to look forward to. On the 7th, one of Scotland’s most popular folk bands, North Sea Gas, will be showcasing their talents. Having released 19 albums and toured all over the world, North Sea Gas are definitely not to be missed. The Routes Quartet will be performing on the 9th. Blending together the musical traditions of folk and classical, they manage to impart a new twist on traditional folk songs as well as writing their own original compositions. Featuring a blend of Scottish, Irish and English music, The Routes Quartet are ones to watch for the future. The 22nd has Martha Ffion performing her blend of folk, indie and pop. Now performing with a full band, Martha is now performing with a punchier edge but still wears her earlier influences on her sleeve including 60s icons like The Beatles, the Shangri-Las and Nancy Sinatra. Alistair McCulloch returns on the 23rd with ‘The Alistair McCulloch Trio’. Their annual Scottish tour has become a firm fixture on the folk calendar. Featuring Alistair on fiddle as well as Marc Duff (Capercaillie) and Aaron Jones (Old Blind Dogs), they have gained a reputation for dynamic concerts. As well as their usual Drouthy Cobbler Comedy Club on the 26th, they also have a sold out show by Scottish comedy legend Fred Macaulay on the 14th. Fred’s brand of humour mixes cheek, sarcasm and satire and and is the perfect remedy for a world filled with Trump, Brexit and Indyref 2. Tickets for all of these events are available at The Drouthy Cobbler and at www.thedrouthycobbler.co.uk Please be aware that while live comedy can often be hilarious, it is also highly subjective and some material might not be to your tastes!

Forres Highland Games 2017
Alan James - Chieftain 2017 Forres Highland Games, an annual celebration of traditional Scottish sport, music and entertainment, takes place on Saturday 8th July 2017 in Grant Park in Forres. Proceedings get under way at 12.30 pm with the Opening ceremony. The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain Mr Alan James, a local Forres man, and Managing Director of A J Engineering & Construction Services Ltd a well-known Forres based business. Alan who grew up in Rafford is Chairman of Forres Events Ltd and a long standing well respected supporter and sponsor of Forres Highland Games. The best of track and field athletes, the “heavies, highland dancers, pipers, grass track cyclists and pipe bands will compete and entertain the spectators in what is sure to be a colourful and enjoyable Scottish highland gathering. Local highland games have over many years been a nurturing ground for developing young athletes who have gone on to represent their country at international athletics meetings such as The Commonwealth Games. Grass track cycling races provide a dynamic thrilling spectacle. The Games host the North of Scotland Scottish Grass Track Championship. There is sure to be a good entry and keen competition for the title. The “message boy’s bike race, a unique crowd cheering fun cycling event will have local youngsters racing round the track for the Grant Dawson Trophy. Later spectators are invited to have a go in a visitor’s race. The Tug-o-War competition is another crowd pleaser with local teams competing for the Harry Troup Trophy. Competition Highland Dancing open to all age groups is a very popular and colourful event enjoyed by the overseas visitors, as are the Solo Piping competitions. The highlight of the afternoon is the Massed Pipe Bands marching around the arena to the skirl o the
pipes and swish o the kilts. A sight and sound not to be missed and one for the photo album. There are numerous displays and trade stands, as well as hot and cold food, ice cream and a licenced beer tent. Forres Highland Games are a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Reg Charity No : SC046639). The staging of the 89th Games is only achievable through the dedication of the unpaid hard working Games Committee, volunteer judges and local helpers, and the loyal support and generosity of local benefactors and businesses.

The Nairnshire Farming Society is holding its 219th Annual Show on Saturday the 29th of July at Kinnudie Farm Auldearn. Nairn Show will have something for everyone with an excellent food fair, quality trade stands, a full and varied programme of afternoon entertainment and an excellent display of livestock in the cattle, sheep and horse sections. This year’s show is shaping up to be a very attractive and fun-filled day for all the family and we are hoping for a good crowd. Car parking is to be free this year whilst admission charges are set at £10 per Adult, £5 per concession (Age 65+), £5 per school child (5-18) and pre-school children will have free admission. Our charges are set at a level to cover the substantial set up costs associated with the show and also to enable the society to make donations to local clubs and charities. Visitors will also be treated to a varied line up of trade stands both on the field and under canvas in the Food and Craft Fairs which will offer all kinds of merchandise including local produce and fancy goods as well as the very latest agricultural machinery. The Food Fair will again include cookery demonstrations throughout the day by various providers in a dedicated kitchen area. There will also be display of vintage tractors and

Coffee & walnut swiss roll (gluten free) A real indulgence this month - one of my all time favourites an “anytime snack” with a cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy!! Ingredients: A little icing sugar 100g caster sugar ¼ tsp salt 4 eggs-separated seeds of 1 vanilla pod 100g very finely grated (& peeled) sweet potato 50g rice flour 20g finely ground walnuts 1tsp baking powder Method: Preheat the oven to 180, line a swiss roll tin with baking paper and dust with icing sugar to help prevent the swiss roll sticking. Whisk the egg whites with 2 tbsps of the measured caster sugar until stiff. Whisk the egg yolks, vanilla and remaining sugar until very pale and leaves a trail when the whisk is removed. Add the sweet potato and mix well. Using a spatula add about a third of the egg whites to the egg yolk mixture and beat. In stages, add the remaining egg white mixture into the egg yolk mixture, being very careful not to knock any of the air out. The best technique is a figure of 8 motion being sure to get the sides and bottom of the mixing bowl. Add the rice flour, baking powder and ground almonds and fold in until incorporated. Pour this mixture into the prepared tin and bake for about 15 minutes, then onto a new piece of baking parchment sprinkle some caster sugar and upturn the sponge onto this. gently peel the baking parchment off the sponge, and carefully start to loosely roll up the sponge and allow it to cool. 175g soft butter 350g icing sugar sifted 2tbsp instant coffee dissolved in a little hot water While the sponge is cooling, beat together the above 3 ingredients, unroll and fill the sponge, re-roll and put the kettle on to enjoy properly!!

Words by the Wayside “...for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.” (Acts 27:25)
Reader, all religions in the world say “work your way to Heaven”. But the Lord Jesus says “I am the way”. God’s Word says that all have sinned, all have need of salvation; and all can only have salvation through Jesus Christ and His death on the Cross at Calvary for them. But You must receive Him as Your Saviour. God’s Word says it is as many as receive Him, to them gives He the power to be sons of God and enter God’s Family. Those who do not believe are condemned already.
